A Year's Progress.

N several respects the past year has been one of decided progress. A new course has been introduced, that of Structural Engineering. The Department of Phy5ics has been reorganized by Dr. Wendell, forn~erlyof Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and brought up to the maximum of efficiency under his able supervision. Many changes of minor importance have been made in the curriculum as well.

One noteworthy change is the severity with which conditioned students have been dealt with. The advanced requirements for both admission and advancement and the more seveie penalties for lateness and absence have all tended to raise the quality of scholarship, but often at the expense of the enrollmerit.

The greatest mark of progress has been the acquisition and use of the new athletic field. Probably no one thing has done more to raise Stevens*rank among the colleges.

The field house will long stand as a monument to the industry and generosity of the students themselves.

The student affairs have run along peacefully during the year, and even the rushes within the buildings have con~pletely ceased. This is probably because the field is so accessible when the boys want to blow off steam.

Some of the interclass bouts have not been entirely satisfactory, but rules for their better performance in the future have been adopted.

T h e various student activities have been recorded elsewhere in this issue, so i t can only be said that we have passed thru a most successful year and are about to introduce a wind-up" this week which cannot fail to reflect credit o n our Alma Mater.

The Students' Hall.

On Class Day. next Wednesday, the Class of 1908 will present a sum an~ountingto over $1300 to the Trustees of the Institute to be held i n trust until it has been increased by further contributions to the sum of $50,000, when an equal amount will be available.

So soon as this hall is a reality, just so soon will Stevens be converted from an Old Mill to a Hoboken Paradise. No longer then will we hear the inquiry, "Where does Stevens hide her spirit ? " Then the students will not have to gather at a "gin-mill" in order to enjoy a little social life. Our own club will bring the students together outside of the class-room and cultivate warmer friendships. T h e Students' Hall is the most pressing need at the present time. The sympathy of all should be enlisted in this project. Such being the case, 1908 must liberally help to swell this fund when the days of prosperity return. 1909 ought to help next year. T h e college publications could devote their surpluses to no better cause.

That 1910 Show ought to pay good dividends next year, and the question will come up how to invest them.

T h e Students' Hall is the best investment that has ever been presented to us. W h y not take advantage of it, and all work with one accord to build that Students' Hall as soon as possible?

The Handbook.

THESTUTE, having decided to devote its surplus to the publishing of a Stevens Handbook, has placed the preparation of the book in the hands of four juniors. T h e Institute authorities have been interested in the plan, and have lent their support. T h e Handbook, which is to be the size of a pocket diary, will be issued sometime during the summer, and, according to the present plan, will besent by mail to all prep. school men passing'a majority of the entrance examinations in June. T o all members of the classes of 1909, 1910 and 1911, it will be distributed free of charge the first week of college in September. The book will contain information about all student activities, giving the re-' quirements for the winning of athletic emblems, the making of college teams, membership in undergraduate organizations, and the like. I t will also contain the book of Information for Students, which has previously been published. separately. To Alumni and others than Stevens students, the book will be sold for fifty cents a volume, post paid, as long as the edition lasts.

Resume of the Lacrosse Season.

I t is seldom that a team has to start with such a handicap as this year's team experienced at the beginning-out of the twelve men who composed last year's 'Varsity only three were on hand when Coach Davis called the first scrub practice. The difficulty was reduced somewhat by the fact that during the fall practice under the supervision of the coach a large number of new men were broken in. During the entire season there was never any trouble in getting out a scrub team ; at times there were seventyfive lacrosse players on the field. Having had such a large number of men out learning the game will be a great advantage for next year's team and great results are expected.

111spite of this lack of experienced players a very creditable showing was made, winning four out of eight games and scoring exactly the same number of goals as our opponents. I t seems that Stevens can never pull out ahead in a game if they once get behind; it has been this way in both lacrosse and football for the past two years. I t was this hoodoo which prevented us from winning after we lost our first league game; the team suffered a slump from which it never recovered. Both Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore probably had better teams than Stevens, but it is to be regretted that we suffered defeat at the hands of Lehigh.

Lehigh was inferior in both team work and stick handling. The Stevens team displayed a little stage fright when the murmurings from the grand stand such as "put the wood to 'em" and ''knock him out" reached their ears.

As a rule, Stevens is on a par with all the other teams in stick work. The individual work of several of our players is seldom surpassed, but in endurance and systematic team work we cannot compare with Hopkins or Swarthmore. Lacrosse is a game for track men, for men that can run fast and keep it up, and perhaps our new field will assist in developing them. The effect of the new field seems to be shown already in the improved playing of the class teams. The teams are evenly matched and some fine work is shown on both sides.

The weather conditions thruout the season were discouraging; some games were played in cold, damp, weather and some in actual rain, in fact in only one game did the sun shine. Two games were cancelled on account of rain.

Stevens finished last in the race for the championship of the Southern Division of the Intercollegiate Lacrosse League ; Johns Hopkins, first; Swarthmore, second; and Lehigh, third, Stevens should be in the Northern Division of the League. Harvard, whom we defeated by a score of 6 to 2 is champion of the Northern Division, having defeated Cornell, Hobart and Columbia.

The season started with a rush-winning four games in succession. The three games with Columbia, C. C . N. Y. and Harvard were expected to be victories, but not so with the Crescent game. Stevens has not defeated the Crescents in thirteen 1

years, in fact, only once before has the Crescent team been defeated by a college aggregation. This victory was perhaps the most remarkable game of the season; never did a Stevens team put so much spirit and enthusiasm, in a game away from home, but only after getting one goal ahead. When the Crescent attack was trying to tie the score the 'Varsity defense played a s if their life depended upon the result.

After winning these games, hopes were raised in regard to the championship, but we were disillusioned in the first league game with Johns Hopkins. The other league games were also defeats, placing us in last place. The summary of the scores follows : Opponents. Stevens.

Baseball.

I t is a difficult tliiiig to review an unsuccessful season and especially difficult if tile sport be a new one with an insecure fooling at the college. T h a t the baseball season was unsuccessful, to say the lea>t, cannot be disputed ; the recoid of winning two games out of ten, and both victories over C. C. N. Y., cannot be described with words of comn~endation.

Many of the games were just poor exhibitions of baseball, numerous errors and displays of 'poor judgment were characteristic. I u one game the team played what might be called a splendid game-the New York University game at Hoboken. I n this game the result was very much in favor of the 'Varsity up to the very last inning, in which N. Y. U. won out by one point. To play such a game with a team like N. Y. U., a game that should have been a victory, clearly sliows that the team had ability. The cause of the poor record can only be attributed to an unaccountable slump., The coaching was the same as last year, and but few of last year's team are out of college; ill fact, some of last year's 'Varsity were unable to get a place. I t seems that a large part of the blame should be accorded to the student body. The cheering at the games-when there was any-and the general interest in the game cannot be spoken of too harshly. When most needed, after the first few defeats, the students ceased to attend the games and cheer. This condition of affairs is deplorable; at some of the larger colleges when a team falls behind, the support of the student body is increased.

Next year's team will be handicapped by the loss of both oitchers and a few olayers. and if the record of this year is to be redeemed the studentswillhave to give the team more eiicouragetnent. Schedule for 1908 :

Tennis.

Owing to a late start and bad weather it appears unlikely that the tennis tournament will be finished out. The tennis team also suffered and was able to play but one of the sclieduled matches, that with N. Y. U. I n this match, however, the team showed what could be expected of them, and won easily, 6 matches to 1. The new courts have been in constant use since their opening.

With the same interest displayed next year, an early start, and but few of this year's promising team lost thru graduation, the tennis season of 1909 should be a successful one.

Bowling.

The interest taken in bowling last year has not been so prominent this season, nor have the general scores been as good. .

111the only outside match, played in Brooklyn November 25, a team composed of Juniors and Seniors was defeated by Pratt.

The rest of the matches were confined to interclass games.

I n this series the Juniors defeated the Seniors the best two out three, giving the former the interclass championship. The Seniors defeated both the Sophomores and Freshmen. No class games were rolled between the Freshmen and Sophomores:

"The Link."

The Link of 1908 made its appearance about the middle of May and was received with general satisfaction.

The front cover is simple, yet very effective in its originality.

An advertisement disfigures the back cover, yet it is stated that there were very good business reasons for having it there.

In general arrangement and quality of its cotitents the book compares very favorably with The Links of previotis years. The half-tone work is all well executed, which is pro noticeable improvement over last year's annual.

The individual write-ups of the juniors are all interesting but many are rather "tame".

However, the idea of the baby pictures was a genuine surprise which more than covered any other faults. The Board deserves great credit not only for its originality in regard to the baby pictures themselves, but also for the clever way in which the pictures were obtained without the secret leaking out.

The policy of expansion for which THESTUTEhas always stood, has been followed this year by bringing out an issue of twenty instead of fifteen numbers. Previous boards feared that news would be scarce during the Intern~ediateTerm when n1any of the seniors are away on inspection trips, but no difficulty was experienced this year, and the plan of twenty issues will probably be fallifred by next year's board. A feature of THESTVTS of the present volume has been the publication of cartoons on various interesting phases of college activity.

A strong effort was made to enlist the active co-operation of the student body by appeals for articles, and as astimulus severfl prize contests were held under THE STUTE'S auspices. Altho some interesting articles were obtained in this way the number received did not come up to expectations. However, the interest in THE STUTEhas been more apparent since the new mail box was placed in the main hall.' This has helped to advertise THE STUTE by serving as a daily reminder; and, as a result, during the latter half of the year copy has been received in such abundance that it was often a problem to take care of it.

In short, every effort has been made to improve on the past and to advance still further toward the ideal set by the founders

of THESTUTE,that of publishing a paper which should be bright, newsy and of general interest without being partisan.

Feeling that with a much increased alumni circulation, and a larger paper generally, the task of publishing THE STUTEwas too great a one to expect four men to bear, the present board have selected five juniors and one sophomore to compose the editorial board of VOL. 5. " T h e business manager will have an assistant, and there will be three itislead of two associate editors.

The " Indicator."

The Indicator has enjoyed a very successful year. Many valuable and interesting papers have been contributed ; and, since tlie Indicator has increased its staff of editors, the undergraduate notes have been more complete.

The advertising in the Indicator has not been greatly affected by the recent hard times," showing the esteem in which the Indicator is held as an advertising medium.

The Indicator has recently formed a sort of "community of interests" with THESTUTB,so that in future the Indicator will be devoted mainly to technical literature and reports of Alumni meetings, etc., whereas THE STUTBwill take care of current Alumni and Institute news. The Indicator has co-operated in many ways with THESTUTE,and thanks are due its editor for many of our Alumni notes.

1908 Song Book.

The Class of 1908 has done this year what the entire college should do next year. I t has published a song book. The book makes no pretensions at all, being but a class souvenir-but its publication shows the right spirit, the Stevens spirit !

What Stevens needs above all other things to give life to the College and Campus is a Stevens Song Book.

There are already enough songs to fill a fair sized book, and, if a few new ones were composed by students with talent and added to the present list, a book could be published of which we would be proud.

M. I. T. has her song book. Why not Stevens?

Editorial.

The Alumni will be pleased to learn that our campaign for Alumni subscribers has been most successful to date and a list of 600 or 700 Alumni in the fall would not surprise Alumni. us in the least.

To have a successful Alumni Department the graduates must co-operate by sending i n all interesting items.

With their help next year we can promise the Alumni what they have always needed-a paper to keep them in constant touch with the ' O l d Mill".

Although there were many minor faults while passing thru the experimental stage, the opinion was prevalent among both professors and students, up to and including last The Honor June, that the Honor System was a decided sueSystem. cess. During the past school year several jolts have occurred, which if continued, are bound to eventually cause dissatisfaction among- the students with the present system.

I n the first place, a few of the professors have lately made it a practice to give either much harsher or longer examinations than formerly.

When the students are doing their best to practice and enforce honest examinations, as we believe they are, harder examinations certainly are not encouraging.

Another point that has been criticised, is the attempt on the part of some professors to exercise certain powers that were supposed to be vested in the honor system committee.

I t is clearly evident that there ought to be a definite under-

standing between the Faculty and students on these and other points, expressed in rules for the conductance of examinations.

Another plan that would insure harmonious co-operation between Faculty andstudents would be to require the honor committee to appear before a Faculty committee after each set of examinations to make a verbal report.

I n this way any faults on either side could be discussed with the object of avoiding their continuance in the future.

This plan could even be carried much further with benefit.

Students are prone to criticise some of their professors, and professors are equally prone to criticise some actions of the students.

Probably the Faculty think their criticisms are justified and the others are not. That is only human nature.

Criticism cannot be suppressed, so would it not be well to try to regulate it instead ? No good is to be derived from spreading the faults of the Institute broadcast, but much might be learned by the Faculty if they would listen to the impartialcriticism of the students. This object could best be accomplished by having periodical meetings between class deans (and possibly other members of the Faculty) and students.

A custom of having a meeting, say monthly, of representatives of the classes and Faculty, would at least make students feel that they never need suffer in silence".

The first logical step in the introduction of student self-government is the plan outlined above of having students and professors "get together" frequently. Kickers would then have no excuse for living.

Reviewing the past year at Stevens with particular attention to those phases of college life which refer more particularly to the social side, it is gratifying to note the support Student given by the students in general ; but one very Life. lamentable thins; is the fact that the Faculty do not show the same interest in the social affairs of the students, as was formerly the case. The blame for this state of affairs rests with the students. They must see that they select men with ability and tact to run off these affairs, men who can make the professors feel that the students really want them and that they are cordially welcome. Social contact with men of education and culture is one of the great advantages of-a college course, of which we should take advantage.

This issue ends the fourth year of THESTUTE'Slife of usefulness, as the present editorial board retires in favor of next year's board. I t is with regret that we relinquish our duties, for it has ever been a pleasure to know Finale. that our labors must in some slight degree help along student activities at the Old Mill". I t must be reluctantly admitted that our accomplishments have not kept pace with our ambitions to place the paper on a higher plane of usefulness.

W e wish to extend our most sincere thanks to our many friends who have so liberally helped THESTUTE. The members of the Faculty and Alumni who have furnished news from time to time and students, who have sacrificed their time to reporting games and collecting news, deserve special thanks. These men all have our thanks for lessening our own burden.

Baseball.

Stevens 3-Rutgers

On May 23, the baseball team lost to Rutgers thru poor fielding and inability to connect with the curves of Rolsind.

Nevertheless some brilliant plays developed during the game.

The first four Rutgers men up singled, but sharp fielding and a good throw by Ridgway prevented any scoring. Harris got a difficult foul fly. Hearsey tripped over the track in catching a long fly but held on to it. Amberg captured a high fly after a hard run to deep short. I n the eighth inning Ridgway made the longest hit of the season. The ball travelled past the centerfielder to the track, but the runner was caught at the plate on a quick relay. Utz relieved Sturgis in the fifth inning. A Louie run, a three bagger and three singles out of six times at the bat was the record made by Fisher, Rutgers' centerfielder.

Chess Season.

During the year matches were played with the Hoboken Chess Club, Rutgers, N. Y. U., and the New York Law School.

The Institute team was successful i n the last match-only. The match with Rutgers was played in New Brunswick and only three Stevens men put in an appearance. The Institute cham-

pionship was won by I,andesn~ann '09. A triangular chess meet between Rutgers, N. Y , U. and Stevens will likely be inaugurated next year. Considerable interest has been shown in chess this year and the prospects of a strong team for next year are good.

Musical Clubs* Success.

The past season of the Musical Clubs has in every respect been the most successful on record. Concerts were given in Upper Montclair, Orange, Bronxville, Glen Ridge, Hoboken, Passaic, and Cranford, and in every case the numbers were well received. Besides this, the Quartet and Quintet appeared at several places alone and helped to swell the net earnings of the >ear.

I n view of the fact that the Glee Club loses four men, the Orchestra five. and the Mandolin Club two, everything points towards a most successful season next year. Moreover, the surplus amounting to approximately $200 is to be entirely devoted' to providing an expert coach to drill the different clubs in the art of expression and playing in unison. This fact should induce many more men to try for positions than formerly, for the tests will be more competitive k character, and membership will bring a good deal of beneficial individual instruction.

The Engineering . Society.

The new officers of the Engineering- Society calJed its first meeting in Dr. Denton's room on May 20. I t was an invitation meeting, held for the purpose of laying out the plans for the coming year and for extending the membership to those who might be interested.

A comparatively large number attended the meeting and over. many signed the membership list before the gathering Some more invitations will be sent out by the secretary, who hereby requests "those chosen few" to let him know as early as possible their decision. The Engineering Society intends to include in its activities for next year the following features : 1. General Lectures by prominent men. Leaders in the engineericg world of to-day will be requested to speak before the student body. The subjeAs will be of general interest, so as to appeal to everyone, even after 4 o'clock.

2. Speeches before the Society. Members are hereby once more notified that subjects for speeches are to .be sent in to the secretary before September 2, preferably subjects of a literary cltaracter. Keep your eyes open during the summer, think of the Engineering Society once in a while, and remember that there are a lot of fellows interested in what you experienced in the summer vacation. Write up an article and give us the title of it before September 1 .

3. Some inspection trips have been arranged.

The new giant steamer "Rotterdam" of the dam line will be assailed by the members early in October, and the officers feel assured that the engine room will not be the only point of interest.

Others are being arranged not so far from the Institute, so as not to consume too much time.

4. As the need of an employment bureau has been suggested in these columns, the Engineering Society has taken it upon its shoulders to carry it on. Faculty Changes.

Changes in faculty and administration of much importan college were authorized at a meeting of the Board Trustees on Wednesday, Jane 3. The titles of several profess were advanced in degree, and new assignments of work wer made. As a result of the meeting, Acting Professors Pryor and Gunther are appointed full professors, and pi charge of their respective departments, while Professor berger retires from all work in the department of drawing, t give his entire attention to the office of registrar and treasurer and Assistant Professor Knapp is made full professor.

Perhaps the most important change made in the administra tion of the college work was the dividing of the old Departmen of Mechanical Drawing and Designing into two departments One of these, which is to have charge of the freshman and sop omore work, and over which Professor Knapp will be placed, to be called the Department of Descriptive Geometry and Me chanical Drawing. The. second, which will be known as Department of Kinematics and Machine Design, will have .as head Professor Ftirman.

Hereafter t l e shopwork will be under the direction of Kinsey, who has previously assisted Dr. Denton and been at th head of the Bureau of Printing. Mr. Kinsey will have of Instructing Director of Shopwork, or something sin1 new department called the Purchasing Department, wi charge of Professor Pryor, while Mr. Kinsey will be assistant I this department and also assistant Superintendent of Euildi and Grounds.

President Humphreys' work with the juniors and seniors will no longer be known as "Business Engineering", but as the Economics of Engineering". President Humphreys may have an assistant in the work next year, reserving for himself only a few lectures on practical points in connection with the course, but keeping closely in touch with the instruction.

The Board of Trustees took the first legal steps toward increasing the number on the board from 12 to 20, and the by-laws were correspondingly altered. A nominating committee was appointed to suggest suitable names to fill the newly created vacancies. The vote for an alumni trustee for the term of three years, resulted in the election of Henry Torrance, Jr., vice R. M. Anderson, whose term expired.

The election of officers of the board resulted as follows: President, Alexander C. Humphreys ; Vice-president, Andrew Carnegie ; Secretary, A. R. Wolff ; Treasurer, E. A. Stevens ; Assistant-Treasurer, A. Riesenberger. A second vice-president will be elected later.

F. A. Vanderlip and E. A. Stevens were appointed to serve on the Finance Committee, the former being chairman. The committee on buildings and grounds was announced as follows : A. R. Wolff, chairman ; Edward Weston and Kosea Webster.

Degree for Dr. Pritchett.

Dr. Henry S m i t h Pritchett, bead of the Caruegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching-, will be the principal speaker at the Commencement Exercises on Thursday. Dr. Pritchett will have the honorary degree of Doctor of Science conferred upon him by Steveiis at this time.

Addition to Prep.

Of the $25,000 needed for the building of the addition to the Stevens School, President Humphreys lias obtained $7,300 and lias a subscription of $10,000 more contingent on the raising of the first $15,000.

Decoration Day proved rather costly to the Athletic Association, guarantees aniounting to about 150 had to be paid to Hobart and Bucknell, even thongh no ganies were played on the field. Had the weather been fair the gate receipts would have been very large, but the expectations of the managers were not fulfilled. Instead of making a large profit, the games were a dead loss.
