Athletics.

A

T the beginning of each college year, there is always a great

deal of speculation as to the prospects of the Institute on the athletic field. This year we have more reason than usual to believe that a successful year lies before us. I n spite of the loss of a number of men from last year's 'Varsity squads, we still have an abundance of good material which only needs drilling into shape.

Out of the twelve men who earned their letter on last year's Football Team, we have lost four by graduation. W e must look to the incoming class to fill most of these holes. Every man who plays the game should make a try for the Team.

Lacrosse has been less fortunate, as seven members of the Class of 1906 played on that team. However, Coach Davis promises us great things for this year, and we are inclined to believe him when we recall the fact that there were sixty men enrolled on last year's squad, a noteworthy showing for a college of our size.

The Baseball Team will be remarkably strong this year.

This Team has made great progress in its one year of life, and bids fair to become a leading factor in the athletic fame of Stevens Institute.

A resume of the season's records of the different teams will show that the Institute does not suffer by comparison with its rivals. The Football Team scored ninety-one points to the opponents' twenty-two ; the Lacrosse Team ran up a total of thirtyfive against twenty-three ; the Baseball Team scored eighty-three runs to forty-eight tallies ; the Tennis Team won eight out of fifteen matches ; the Basketball Team won three out of six games ; and one of our men received a third place at the Intercollegiate Meet, the two points won thus securing us a high ranking anlong the colleges belonging to the Intercollegiate Association. With such a record behind us we must start the season with great hopes. Let each man do his share and great things will be accomplished.

The practice so far has been very encouraging. The fi practice was held Wednesday at which twelve men reported, against eight on the first day of last year. We were able to ha a line-up and see how the new rules worked. There has been litre-up every day since.

As to our schedule, it is by far the hardest we have had years. We Start with Princeton, Rutgem and Trinity, and order to be successful against these teams, we must put in immense amount of hard work.

On Saturday we expect to play a regular game of two fifte minute halves against the scrub, and the College to a m o q h t to come out and cheer the candidates in their work. Th certainly deserve all the encouragement possible.

The M a s s M e e t i n g .

Following the custom set by the Class of 1906 on the opening day last year, a student's mass meeting, under the auspices of the Senior Class, will be held in the Auditorium this morning at 11:20 A. M. The object of this meeting being to promote interest in student activities, there will be addresses by the following men : President Morris of the Athletic Association, Capt. Cowenhoven of the Football Team, Capt. Roberts of the Lacrosse Team, Capt. Henes of the Baseball Team, Capt. Grubb of the Basketball Team, President Woolley of the Tennis Club, and Manager Walker of the Musical Clubs.

New Athletic

Field.

All this summer there has been a gang of men working on the new athletic field, and it now looks as if it might be ready for use next spring. Extensive grading for the grand stand has been done on the east side, as well as some more filling-in on the west. If the grass is considered firm enough, there will probably be fall Lacrosse practice on it, provided the men wear rubber shoes. As yet there are no definite plans as to the arrangement of the field, beyond having- it laid out for the use of the three principal teams', with a running track and a grand stand-

Baseball.

Now that we are about to begin another year's work at the Institute we must not devote all our time to the mere thought of work, but we must also endeavor to uphold the Institute's fame upon the athletic field.

Much credit must be given to Ex-Captain Beckman and ExManager Gaffney for their successful efforts in having Baseball recognized as a Varsity sport in the Institute. They were well rewarded when the strong teams of St. Johns College and Rutgers went down to defeat. With all but two men from last year's tearnleft to don their suits again, the prospects are indeed very bright.

Fall practice will be arranged ; and every man who can play, no matter how little, should-respond when candidates are called for. Manager Lawrence has been working hard all summer to arrange a good schedule for the coming season, which will be announced as soon as completed.

Basketball.

The second year of Basketball at Stevens is about to begin.

The team last year, although organized very late in the season and working under many difficulties, made a very creditable record. The A. A., recognizing the quality of our work, awarded to the men the letters ' B. S. B. " This year is going to be far ahead of the 'last one, provided the men who have ever played Basketball will come out to the practice and give their support. A place to practice will be obtained as soon as possible. Then it will be up to the men to put out the strongest possible team to uphold the honor of Stevens in Basketball.

One word to the Freshmen ! Get together early for your class team ; get lots of practice; and, last but not least, come out for work with the college team. Every man stands a equal chance for a place on the team ; the best man will win. Be one c6 of the best men. The one cry of all the college teams is: a good scrub.') A snappy, strong scrub team will make a snappy, strong college team. Let us have both this year.

The other classes do not need a special message. But I would say to them, come out and try for the team ; at least help F. A. GRUBB,Captain. us out on the scrub team.

M u s i c a l Clubs.

The Stevens Musical Clubs have gained a reputation in the concerts equally as good as many of the clubs of past for the larger colleges. We must, therefore, live UP to this rePutation during the coming- year and, if possible, turn out the best clubs in the history of the Institute. This cannot be done unless the members of the several Clubs co-operate with their leaders and take a personal interest in the Clubs.

During the last year, there was much complaint made of the frequency of the rehearsals. The cause of this was the inability of the leaders to get all the members of their Clubs together at one time. As a result, they were obliged to call extra rehearsals, in hopes that those absent at the regular rehearsals would attend. During the coming season, if every one will make an extra effort to attend the regular rehearsals and, while rehearsi n g , will pay attention to their leader instead of doing some vaudeville act, I can promise that the rehearsals will be shorter and less frequent than in the past. Also, if the members work hard during the fall and learn their parts, there will be fewer calls for rehearsals after the holidays. Do not let yourself think that you know your part well enough and do not need the, practice; for, as a general rule, those who do know their parts are the ones who are the most regular in their attendance at the, rehearsals, and those who think they know their parts are thel ones who need the most practice and are absent the most. still1 another thing to consider is that the leaders have to spend muc more time in their part of the work than the members and i justice to them, they should not be obliged to call rehearsals account of absentees.

' T h e Link" is to be published this year under a system which is still in the experimental stage. Whether this system is to be a success depends not alone on the support given by the class issuing the book but on that of the whole student body.

Roughly speaking, about 90% of the men at the Institute subscribed for one or more copies of the "Link of 1906" the first to be produced under the new system. This is a remarkable statement especially when the proportion is compared with those of previous years. This year every man ought to consider it his duty to subscribe in advance for at least one copy, so that the percentage may be brought nearer the 100 mark.

The contributions received for the Link of 1906," excluding those furnished by the Junior Class, were hardly more numerous than in the past. The editors of this year's annual will stand in earnest need of material, as the size of the Board has been reduced and the work for each member correspondingly increased.

The fact that the book is scheduled to come out the week proceeding the Easter Vacation means there must be a lot of hustling on the part of those who are willing to help, as well as the Editors, themselves. An appeal is therefore made, especially to the Freshmen, for aid in making the "Link of 1907" the best C. G . MICHAUS, Stevens has ever had.

Engineering Society.

I t is our desire to make the Bngineering Society a great success this year,; but to make it so, some energy must be expended. First of all, we depend on every one of our present members to do their best in furthering its interests. It is also necessary that we secure the help of several Juniors who are interested in engineering work. Juniors who desire to become members should see the Membership Committee (Cook and Cole), or any officer, or member of the society Members are especially requested to be regular in their attendance at meetings. If you cannot do some practical work for the society, you can at least encourage us by your presence at the meetings. The regular business meetings of the society will be held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The first business meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 2, at 4 o'clock, in Prof. Denton's Room.

I t is the society's intention to arrange several good lectures this year. The lecture Committee is now working on a schedule, which will appear in print in a few days. They have already secured several prominent speakers, who will lecture on subjects of timely interest to engineering students. One lecture is to be given each month, the first being on Wednesday, October 10. A personal invitation is extended to every man in the Institute to attend these lectures.

Publicity Bureau.

The Publicity Bureau has now been in existence two years and during that time has done good work in letting the world at large know something about Stevens' doings. The work, however, has not been systematically carried out : men were not always on hand when it came time to distribute interesting news items, and sometimes only one or two papers had any notice at all of an important lacrosse or football game, etc. The fault lies entirely with ourselves. Papers will be glad to print articles if they are well written and regularly supplied.

I t is proposed, this year, to organize along new lines. It is up to the students if the Bureau is to be a success. The work is interesting ; and, if conducted rightly, there are financial returns which amply repay a man for his trouble. Those interested should see Mr. Smith, of the President's office, or one of the STUTEBoard.

BY reference to the financial report of Vol. 11, given in came thru its another column, it will be seen that THESTUTE second year with a balance on the right side of the ledger. The balance, or profit, was small, however, and would hardly warrant this year's Board in lowering the price of the paper. I t has also seemed best to retain the original plan of publication-that is, bi-weekly with fifteen issues during the year.

The attention of the readers of THESTUIE is called to the advertisements which appear in the various issues. Only thru the revenue derived from this source can a paper of this character exist, and only thru liberal returns will merchants continue to have faith in the paper as an advertising medium. Other things being equal, students should patronize those who advertise in preference to those who do not.

I t was hoped to publish in this issue the financial reports of the Lacrosse and Baseball Teams of last season. As it was impossible to complete them in time, they will appear in the next number.

An elaborate Alumni Directory in book form has been issuedby the Alumni Association, filling a long-felt want in this respect. T h e graduates are classified in three different w a y s - a s regards residence, their occupation, and alphabetically.

Since the last issue of THESTUTE,the announcement was made of the retirement of Professors Wall and MacCord, who have .been, made Emeritus Professors of English and I<ogic and of Mechanical Drawing and Designing, respectively.

The enrollment of the Institute this year will be, approximately : Seniors, 82 ; Juniors, 110 ; Sophomores, 120 ; and Freshmen, 140. This makes a total of 452 as compared with 422 last year. Owing to the increased number of students in the two upper classes, it has been decided to divide each class into two sections. T h e Sophomore Class will consist of three sections. and the Freshman, four.

As announced in the last issue of Vol. 2, Professor David S Jacobus has resigned as Professor of experimental Engineering. to accept an important position with the Babcock and Wilcox Boiler Company. master at the class dinner, and was a member of the Calculus Cremation Committee. H e was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity.

Large.

In the midst of the festivities of Calculus Cremation ~ i ~ h f came the sad news of the death of Walter S. Large, of the class of 1908, which occurred Friday, June 8th. T h e report is that death was caused by consumption (altho THESTUTB; has not been able to verify the fact.) Mr. Large was obliged t o leavesthe Institute several weeks before the close of the term on account of ill health.

Mr. Large was a member of the 7th regiment of New York; , and was prominent in athletics, winning third place in the High Jump in the Institute Field Day in his Freshman year. Altho quiet and undemonstrative, he was well liked and popular with his classmates.

As the word of Mr. Large's death came after the closing of College, it was impossible for his Class as a whole to take any action. A message of condolence was sent to the family, however, by Roberts, Pres. and Leonhard, Sec. of the class.
