The New Athletic Field.

gives us great satisfaction to be able to report that tlie progress on the new athletic field is well advanced. Instead of boasting of the prospect of having one of the finest athletic grounds in the country, we can now almost boast of the actuality.

Thruout the summer about twenty-five men have been working on the various improvements ; the fence, the track, the grand stand, and the field house. Students from the different classes constituted the main working force; the field house was built entirely by six students directed by a carpenter.

Work on the track is not so far advanced as might be expected; the carting of ashes is slew work and ashes were at times even difficult to obtain. The track is completely laid out, and the 200 yd. straightaway course has been graded, but it cannot be hoped that the track will be finished until next spring.

The eight-foot iron fence which will eventually enclose the entire field is being constructed in the Institute shops. This year only that part of the fence extending from the Morton Laboratory to Eighth Street, aud from there to Hudson Street, will be erected. This much will surely be finished for the first home football game.

The grand stand is well under way and part, if not all, will be complete for the football season. The stand is to be 144 feet long, supported by concrete piers placed every 16 feet. There will be ten rows of benches and it is estimated that the capacity will be about one thousand people. The seats will be an improvement over those at the Cricket Grounds, being made of slats and resembling the ordinary park benches.

The field house (the frontispiece) is our greatest acquisition and one that has been wanting ever since the college was founded.

We need not feel embarassed now when we compare the facilities extended to visiting teams with those we receive when away from home. The field house, which is finished in bungalow style, is 60 x 25 feet with a ten foot porch. The sides, as well as the roof. are covered wit4 dark green shingles ; the trimmings are white ;

giving altogether a pleasing effect. The house is divided into five compartments; a large reception room, a general locker room containing about 200 lockers, a visiting team room, a home team room, and a toilet. There will be five slate lined shower baths, two of which will open into the visiting team room.

There will be long rubdown tables in the different locker rooms, and also a long lounging bench 011 the veranda. Certain building laws prohibit the installation of stoves, so this year at least we must do without heat.

It is expected that some time steam will be obtained from the boilerhouse for heating purposes. The building will be lighted by electricity. The house will be finished by the first game and it has already been used to some extent for the past week by the men out for football.

The cost of the house will range between three and four thousand dollars, eight hundred of which is the parting gift of the Class of 1907 ; the remainder is composed of two separate funds, which have been in disuse for some time. The home being built by students and designed by Ltidlow and Valentine, Architects-Mr. Ludlow is an Alumnus-deserves the distinction of being an example of home industry.

Football.

With twenty-four candidates answering the call for practice on Sept. 16, Stevens started what is expected to be an unusually successful season. This showing compared to other years, when never more than ten men have reported for the first practice, is a great advance and shows that at last we have been able to get a start as early in the season as other colleges. The freshmen had a good representation and judging from the work done by its men the new class pron~isesmuch. The sophomores have not as many candidates as they should. The class team getting the most men on the 'Varsity and scrub will have a great advantage in the class game, due to the better condition of its men.

Many men in the upper classes who have not played for a 1ear or two and who have never come out for the 'Varsity are out this year. All but three of the "S" men in college reported and it i-i expected all the letter men will be back before college opens.

Those who play football and liave not reported for practice, do so at once. Do not delay longer as it is late now.

We must show greater spirit than ever before, as alumni are coming to help in the coaching this season-a thing that lias never been done before. We must show them that we appreciate what they are doing, as many have to make a sacrifice to get time to be here.

Those who are not out for the team; can you not go up to the field and see what kind of a team is to represent Stevens this fall? The team will be well along i n its practice and you will be able to get a line on it. See what it can do and encourage it.

One more request;-when you come up to the field, if you are not practicing for some team, please go up to the stand. Keep off the field and do not hinder the practice. Baseball.

The outlook for this year's baseball team is indeed very promising. The material at hand includes all of last year's team with the exception of the second baseman. This position will be hard to fill, and fill in a manner that will maintain the high standard of last year. The freshman class possesses a number of good ball players, who will, no doubt, cause the old men to hustle some in order to keep the positions they held on the 1907 team.

The new athletic field will give the national game a great boost here. The lacrosse and baseball fields will be laid out in such a manner that lacrosse and baseball practice can be carried on at the same time. That will allow a practice game every afternoon. Such an opportunity has never been given baseball as long as it has been at Stevens.

On reviewing the records of our past games, it will be noticed that the majority of the defeats were caused by the inability to hit the ball. This weakness was d u e to the lack of batting practice, and in order to obviate this fault, stick work will be taken up as soon as practice begins at the pier.

Mr. Saunders will be with us next spring to continue his good work as coach. He will be greatly aided this year in having had the opportunity of seeing the good and bad points of the players who remain from last year's team, and also the qualifications of many of those who will enter college this fall.

Lacrosse.

No one needs to be told how we are fixed for lacrosse.

Every man knows that out of the thirteen men getting their letter last year eight have left college. With all the defense gone there is a greater chance than ever before for new men to make the team. W e want big men who can use their bodies, stick handling does not need to be as good in the defense as in the attack, therefore a man can be taught to play defense quicker than attack..

Coach Davis has been secured for four weeks this fall to teach new men. Beginners, this is your chance. Not only do we need defense men but several attack positions have to be filled by new men.

With the new field should come increased spirit and a greater number ought to come out for the teams. No one is expected to drop football or baseball for lacrosse. During the fall your first duty is to football, but those who cannot play either that game or baseball should try to learn lacrosse.

The men who earned the S. A. A . for lacrosse last year were given jerseys. This will be done this year if we have the money. Let every man try to do something while in college.

John C. Ostrup, C. E., E. E.

The work which has in the past been carried on at the Institute by Prof. Webb is to be continued and somewhat elllarged by Prof. John C . Ostrtip under the title of Structural Engineering." The subjects to be taught in this department are theory and design of bridges, roofs, steel skeleton buildings, foundations, dams, re-enforced concrete constructions, etc. I n addition to the above Prof. Ostrup will have a general supervision of surveying.

Prof. Ostrup was born at Tislum, Denmark, in 1864. His early education was obtained at a Cadet School, and lie later followed military engineering for three years as a number of the Royal Engineering Corps. I n 1887 lie received the degree of C.E. from tile Polytechnic School at Copenhagen, mid in 1890 a post graduate degree of C . E. and E. E. from the Chicago Engineering School. Prof. Ostrup is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and is known to be fond of athletics.

A short summary of his professional career will show to a slight extent the breadth of Prof. Ostrup's training. He started as a draftsman and engineer with the Chicago Telephone Co., and at the same time became connected with the World's Columbian Exposition. Later he became an assistant engineer in the employ of the Chicago elevated railroad sj~stem,and at various times since then has been connected with electric traction work ill both Chicago and New England. I n 1897 he became assistant, engineer of the Illinois Steel Co., Bridge Dept, T h e years 1901 to 1905 were spent in both New York and Boston as a consulting engineer, during which time he was connected with many important undertakings. Since March 1905, he has been associated with the American Bridge Co., New York. The designs for twenty-eight bridges, seven power stations, eight industrial plants, several railroad stations, tern~inals,etc., exceeding in money value forty millions of dollars, were either wholly or in part the work of Prof. Ostrup.

George V. Wendell, S. B., Ph. D. Professor Wendell, who succeeds Dr. Geyer as Professor of Physics, was born at Plainfield, N. J. in 1871 and received his early training at that place. His later education was received at Cambridge, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the latter conferring on him the degree of S. B. in 1892.

H e became an assistant in Physics at that institution, and was promoted to the rank of instructor. This position he held until 1900, after which he served four years as Assistant Professor. I n 1904 he became an Associate Professor, and would have been advanced to the rank of full professor, had he refused the position offered him by Stevens.

From 1896 to 1898 he studied in h i p zig under the Savage Fellowship, and as an Honorary Fellow of the Massachusetts Institute studied in Berlin up to 1899.

I n addition to his other studies Dr. Wendell established the Department of Physics at Simmons College, Boston, and at the Boston University. H e was a lecturer on Physics for several years in the Lowell Institute School for Industrial Foremen.

Dr. Wendell has always had a keen interest in student affairs. H e was a charter member at M. I. T. of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and has always been an active fraternity man. He is a member of the Physical Society, and was for three years secretary of the Society of Arts.

Library Notes.

During the summer the author and subject catalogues on cards were begun, and the library in the Physics Department, which has received several additions, is now being catalogued.

The additions through the summer were constant; the whole number, including useful pamphlets, being 241. A gift of partial sets of "The Eccentric" and "The Link" received from the Delta Tau Delta fraternity merit special thanks.

That the reading room is used even in warm weather is shown by the record kept of visitors and readers. I n May the total number was 1685, while the combined figures of June and July show a total of 840.

Editorial.

With this issue THESTUTE begins its fourth year of life and activity at Stevens. Under the guidance of former editors its influence has, we believe, been felt-and that strongly.

Tha The present board will endeavor in every way possible Paper. to live up to the traditions of the past, and we bespeak the help of every man in college toward the end that THE STUTEmay this year cement more strongly than ever before that bond of fellowship which unites all sons of Stevens.

While the aim and object of THESTUTE remain unaltered, in the paper itself several changes have been decided upon. The whole volume this year will consist of twenty issues, instead of fifteen as in the past, tho in general it will remain a "biweekly." We believe this increase in size will not necessitate raising the price of yearly subscriptions, provided every man at Stevens will become a Sfevens man, sign his name to the subscription blank without a question, and at the proper time bring forth his dollar-also without a'question. Comn~encingwith this issue the pages of THESTUE will be numbered consecutively thruout the volume. This is done for the convenience of those who may later wish the twenty issues bound in one cover.

The office of THESTUTEis now located in the basen~entof the west wing. During the summer the room formerly devoted to JAnk was furnished by the editorial board of Vol. 111-a portion of its surplus being used for this purpose-and in the future should be left here instead of all communications for THESTUTE on the rack in the lobby.

I t is with a feeling of deep regret that we are compelled to note the absence from college of four members of the class of 1908.

When the honor system" for examinations was Honor adopted and put in use by the entire studentExaminations. body last year, it was expected that every undergraduate would develope-if he had not shown it before-sufficient backbone to make him resist temptation.

Tlie penalty is severe enough, we think, so that it should not be necessary to repeat often a lesson of this kind.

Financial reports of the Lacrosse and Baseball teams of last season, the Musical Clubs Association, Link of 1906 Reports. surplus, and THE STUTE surplus of Vols. I1 and 111, will be published as rapidly as space can be allotted them.

The Mass Meeting.

The idea of having a mass meeting of the entire studentbody on opening day originated in the mind of the late Walter H. Lange, editor of THKSTUTE,Vol. XI. During the summer of 1905 he corresponded with President Humphreys, received his has liearty approval and the plan was carried out. THESTUTE continued to keep up the idea with the firm belief that some good is accomplished.

If we wish to be successful in any line, enthusiasm must be aroused. We cannot do things well if we do them in an unspirited manner. T o have a successful football season the team mus tfirst have candidates and then become imbued with that form of enthusiasn~ which we call college spirit. The mass meeting was intended to accomplish this purpose.

When this paper reaches your hands you will have heard what the leaders of the different activities have to say. You will undoubtedly feel overwhelmed by the number of the appeals; you have been requested to play football, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, chess, and say violin. This would be a too extensive program for any man, and it is not the intention that you should try everything. Pick out a team or an activity that appeals to you and try for it. If you are in earnest and enthusiastic your efforts will surely be successful.

Musical Clubs.

The Stevens Musical Clubs of last year were not as well supported as they should have been. For a college having an enrollment as large as ours, the size of the clubs last year was not encouraging. There are two very prevalent traits of human character which tend to hinder the kind of competition we needdiffidence and pure old-fashioned laziness. I think the latter is probably the stronger in a great many cases ; I know it is in

some. If diffidence is troubling you, remember that it's not going to hurt you to try, and that the leaders will be glad to see you and give you every possible chance. If laziness is your trouble, you are truly a sad case; but try to wake yourself u p by realizing that the clubs need you-and need you badly. If you ever become captain of a team or leader of a club you will realize how impossible it is to work without support, so do your part toward helping the present leaders by coming out-early and often.

Claud Nief.

I t will doubtless be a shock to those of the students who have not already heard of tlie tragedy, to learn of the death, on August 23, of Claud Nief of the Class of 1909.

He had been spending the summer as a machinist's helper, in the employ of the Tietjen and Lanp; Dry Dock Co. While repairing a donkey engine in the hold of one of the vessels, a terrific explosion of the boiler occurred, killing Mr. Nief and five other men. I t is thought that the accident was due to the carelessness of the engineer, who allowed the boiler to run dry.

Resolutions will be adopted by the class as soon as the members can be brought together.

The death of Mr. A. R. Williams, M. E., '95, occurred last August at Toronto, in which place he was temporarily residing.

Mr. Durand Woodman, B. S . , '80,Ph. D., '88, passed away on September 4 last. Mr. Woodman was an analytic and teclinical chemist, with offices in New York.

Faculty and Institute Notes.

Prof. Moore left the Institute during the summer to become professor of Electrical Engineering at the North Corolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, West Raleigh, N. C. Mr. Arthur Weston, A. B. U h i g h University, and A. M. Yale University, formerly instructor in English a t Lehigh, has been appointed instructor in English to succeed Mr. Stone, who has entered business in Detroit.

Prof. Ganz arrived home Sept. 14, after an extended three months tour of England, France and Germany. H e visited all the important government and private laboratories and gathered a great volume of data pertaining to electrical and physical

science. H e took particular interest in the methods of electrical and physical measurements. H e visited the new $4,000,000 Electrical Building of the Polytechnic Institute of Vienna, and thruout his travels was on the lookout for ideas for the projected electrical building at Stevens.

Prof. Ganz has been elected President of the New York Electrical Society. He has made arrangements for some interesting lectures and hopes that all the members of the upper classes will attend, Prof. Hoch has received the degree of Ph. D. from New York University.

The second volume of Prof. Martin's Mechanics, " which is devoted to ''Kinematics and Kinetics," has been published by John Wiley & Sons.

Prof. Fiirman has visited many large concerns during the summer in order to keep in touch with the progress that is being inride along the lines of his department. H e lias been engnged for some time in filing and indexing the trade catalogs of machine manufacturers. f i

T h e subject which Prof. Ostrup will teach is essentially Civil Engineering, but as he will devote himself mainly to the study of bridges, trusses, re-enforced concrete and construction in general, Structural Engineering was considered a more appropriate name for his department.

Mr. Furness left the Department of Physics last June.

Students will note that hereafter the Physics lecture room will be known as Prof. Wendell's room.

The deposit money of the Class of 1907 (about $800.) originally donated for a temporary dressing room, was with the consent and approval of the class officers included in the funds available for the permanentField House.

The enrollment of the Institute this year will be, approximately : Seniors, 96; Juniors, 98; Sophomores, 110; Freshmen, 150. This is a total of 454, nearly the same as last year.

A new cement entrance to the Hudson Street side of the Carnegie Laboratory together with a cement wall around the grass plot, greatly improve appearances and obviate the necessity of "Keep off the grass " signs.

The following additions have been made to the Carnegie Laboratory equipment: 50,000 pound testing machine of the Olsen t; pe, a two inch Venturi meter, 50 sq. f t . surface condenser and a 65 H . P. jet condenser.

cups have been replaced by new ones donated by the Nathan Manufacturing Co. This company has also equipped the boiler room with a new ii~jectorand Reflex water gauges.

Electric lights have been put in the library, Prof. Bristol's room and Prof. Webb's room.

Publicity Bureau.

To help in distributing to New York and suburban newspapers current news of the Institute, the Publicity Bureau needs men from each of the classes, especially those who have had previous experience in writing, or who can operate a typewriter.

The work as now organized is both interesting and profitable.
