If it is true that progress has marked in bright colors the onward path of Stcvens, then it is right that Stevens nieu, old and young, shall meet to celebrate and joy in the thing, and the new field will be the gayest and prettiest sight in the country on this the first great Alumni Day !

And then, too, the red letter day, June 9, 1908, will mark the beginning of greater things. Recognition by all the graduates of what is going on in Hoboken means upholding the hands of our President, the man who, too, is one of us.

And then again, gossip is rife that the '97 gate will soon be swinging on its hinges, and through its piers of stone an avenue shall be formed in which will follow much good fellowship and loyalty for Stevens and for the undergraduate ! This undergraduate some day may be your own boy-in any case the young men on the campus to day are the men who will have to uphold in the future all the old traditions and the name and fame of our old "Stute".

Shall we keep i n touch with their hopes and aspirations ? Then come !

Interclass Lacrosse.

The sophomores opened the inter-class lacrosse series, Wednesday, May 6 , by defeating the freshmen by a score of 6 goals to 1. After two minutes of play, Stillman caged the ball for the freshmen, making their only tally. During the remainder of the first half the ball was ineffectively carried up and down the field, except twice when Cunningham broke the n~onotonyby scoring for the sophomores.

During the second half the sophs had their own way, scoring our more goals, making final score 6 to 1.

There is one aspect of Graduates3 Reunion Day that may not have occurred to some of the undergraduates. AItho Tuesday, June 9, is the day on which many of the Graduates' Alumni will return to renew their youth, do we all Reunion Day.

We must all be on hand to receive the graduates, to cheer them and, in short, to act as their host.

The Alumni cannot take a keen interest in the students unless it is shown that, by their loyalty, they are worthy of that interest. Let every student, from freshman to senior, unite to give the Alumni the very warmest of receptions on June ninth.

To the Graduates and Undergraduates of Stevens Institute : GENTLEMEN :I take this opportunity to present, as nearly as possible, the attitude of the Senior Class towards the coming commencement.

T h e Class is furthering, to the end of its resources, every means of making commencement week a big success at Stevens.

Now that we have a magnificent athletic field, and stand before the country with a well defined policy of progression, the time for apologies is past. Extensive and far-sighted plans for the future have been developed and it now becomes imperative for the graduates and undergraduates to introduce customs and forms in keeping with these iniproven~ents.

Here we have formed the habit of apologizing. We s a j ell no. We do not do such and such a thing, like they do at this or that college because this is an engineering college and, and, and, etc."

There shall be no apologies to friends of the Senior Class this year.

T o carry out this fine resolution we require the co-operation of the Alumni and the lower classmen.

We greatly appreciate the encouragement already received from the graduates, and shall carry out, as nearly as possible, every suggestion made by the Alumni Committee for the Grad-

nates*Reunion Day.

T h e undergraduates feel that their position is stronger when the Alumni back their undertakings. We hope that the Alumni will encourage and help us during graduation week. We are trying to set standards for the future.

If the Alumni attend our commencement exercises with enthusiasm and in large numbers, no doubt 1909 will try to out-do 1908 when their turn comes. We desire that this should be so.

One Alumnus in attendance at an athletic game or a student function is worth two in an office. I t is also necessary that the lower classmen help us. We beseech large attendance at our affairs and feel confident that our fondest hopes will be realized.

Baseball.

Stevens 3-Ursinus

On May 9th the baseball team lost to Ursinus by a score of Paist, the opposing pitcher, struck out eleven men, made four assists, and three hits.

Up to the eighth inning the score was a tie, but in their half, the visitors scored 7 runs on 4 hits and 4 errors, giving them the game.

Faculty and Institute Notes.

Prof. Ganz has been appointed by the Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity of the Borough of Brooklyn as expert to conduct the acceptance tests of equipment at the reserve high pressure fire service station at Willoughby and St. Edward's Streets, Brooklyn. Prof. Pryor will be associated with Prof.

Ganz in these tests and will take charge of the hydraulic nieasurements, while Prof. Ganz will have charge of the electrical measurements.

Mr. Bauer, the senior member of Bauer & Co., the largest concern in the world engaged in the manufacture of medicinal chemicals, was a recent visitor to the Morton Laboratory. He was very much impressed with it, and said he believed there was no building of its class to compare with it, especially as regards ventilation, unless perhaps the new chemical laboratory of the University of Berlin.

The conclusions of the Committee on Electrolysis of the American Gas Institute, to which Prof. Ganz was ConsultingElectrical Engineer, have been published in pamphlet form together with Prof. Ganz's paper on Theory of Electrolytic Corrosion", and a reprint of his lecture delivered before the American Gas Institute, entitled "Electrolysis".

Dr. Sevenoak has commenced his work with the juniors and is giving them practical work in bookkeeping etc. in connection with Pres. Humphreys' course in Business Engineering.

Up to this date the work has proved very interesting-, and it will enable the students to grasp the subject in a much more con~prehensivemanner than heretofore.

Senior Dance.

On Thursday, May 7, the seniors assembled for the annual dance in Carnegie laboratory. Many novelties were introduced in the way of decorations and arrangements, but space is lacking for a detailed description. T h e lecture room was transformed into a lawn, with a brook and pond in its centre and at the front a roomy veranda. Swings, cosy corners and canaries added to the reality of tlie scene. Supper was served in the Library of the main building shortly after midnight.

Altho the weather was not of the best, there was a good attendance and no one regretted having ventured out.

Alumni Notes.

Dr. Denton has recently received, from Mr. Keuchi Abe '99, spme interesting post cards, giving photographic views of the new turbine ships built by the Mitsu-Bishi Dock Yard & Engine Works at Nagasaki, Japan, with which Mr. Abe is actively associated. The last card shows the new (first) turbine warship for the Japanese Navy, which has the following dimensions : l e n g t h 300 ft. ; breadth, 31 ft. 6 ins. ; depth, 18 ft. ; displacement, 1350 tons ; speed 23 knots ; 3 Parsons turbines ; shaft horsepower, 8000. Twin ruddeis.

The Engineerins Record of May 9, 1908, contains an interesting article by A. 11. Potbury '05. The article is entitled "The Power Plant of the American Biscuit Co., San Francisco."

A most interesting part of the article is the description of heating the building by means of the utilization of the waste heat of the chimney.

G. A. Trube '90, is manager of the Traction and Motor Depnrtment of The British Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. CO. S. I,. G . Knox '91, vice-president of the Pucyrus Company, of South Milwaukee, was elected president of the Milwaukee

Metal Trades Association at its annual meeting on January 30.

Mr. Knox, the new president, is one of the younger figures in Milwaukee iron manufacturing circles, but his work in various directions, especially for the introduction of the Bucyrus steam shovel upon the Panama Canal, has attracted national attention.

G. E, Kirsten '00, was married to Miss Gertrude H. Lexow on March 10, 1908. T h e bride is a sister of Allan T.Lexow '05.

Carl F.Dietz '01, has been carrying on investigations in ore n~illingat London, preparatory to installing a new plant above the Arctic Circle in Norway. If this plant proves satisfactory, it will be in~mediatelyenlarged to a capacity of 500 tons of ore per day.

Class Notes.

I t has been moved by the officers of the Class of 1909, that all juniors co-operate with the seniors to keep the proceedings of "Farewell Day" as orderly as possible. T h e juniors will do this -by keeping order themselves and hope that the other two classes will follow their example.

A party of thirty-five men from the Sophomore Class spe a most interesting day with Dr. Pond, visiting the blast furna of the Wharton Steel Co., Wharton, N. J., on Saturday, Ma As two of the furnaces were undergoing repairs, an excel opportunity was afforded to thoroly inspect their construction.

It was possible to mount the shaft, where the charging apparatus could be closely examined and an excellent view of the entire plant obtained. At eleven o'clock, the slag was tapped from the one furnace in operation, and, while plugging up the hole, a gush of molten material suddenly burst forth, flying some fifty feet or more, and scattering the fellows, who were watching the operation. Luckily no more serious results occured than the destruction of the clothes of some of those nearest the furnaces.

G, Lunch was. obtained at Dover, two miles from Whartoii, .i$ and, when Dr. Pond was given a farewell cheer, everyone felt that it had indeed been a pleasant and most interesting trip.

Other Colleges.

Fifteen students of Swarthmore College have been suspe accused of being: implicated in placing a full-grown cow in the girls' rooms. T h e animal created consternation, and was brought down the stairs with great difficulty.

Ex. The Alumni of Purdue at the Isthmus of Panama have offered a prize to the members of the Purdue foot-ball squad who work up the best series of three plays intended to improve the Ex. game, one of which must bear on the forward pass.

A two million dollar estate has been offered to the trustees of the Western University of Pennsylvania for a little over half a million dollars. This property will be used for the site of the new University buildings.

Lacrosse.

Stevens 4-Lehigh 8.

On Saturday, May 9, Stevens lost its second game in the championship series, at South Bethlehem, Pa., by a score of 8 to 4. Lehigh has been defeated by both Swarthmore and Johns Hopkins, so a victory to-morrow at Swarthmore, will save us from humiliation of the tail end position in the league.

The game was characterized by rough work thruout ; the total time of play was drawn out to over one and a half hours on account of time required for attending injuries. The Lehigh rooters in the grand stand took their usual attitude and displayed a very unsportsmanlike spirit, applauding and encouraging rough playing.

The ball was faced off at 3:10 and after a few minutes of play Harrower shot a goal for Lehigh ; Cunningham soon followed with a goal for Stevens and Osbourne with another forLehigh. The play was fast and both attacks tried many shots at goal, but the ball was in the Stevens defense most of the time.

Harrower, Osbourne and Norris scored for Lehigh ; Brewer and Armstrong got thru the defense and scored for Stevens. The first half ended in a shower of rain with the score 5 to 3 in favor of Lehigh.

During the second half there was more rain which made the field slippery and prevented fast and accurate playing. Lehigh caged the ball three times more while most of our shots went wide or were shot from too far out, the hard playing of the Lehigh defense preventing closer attack. Just before the close of the game Roberts scored the final goal for Stevens making the score 8 to 4. The line-up : STSVSVIS.

R u l e s for Cane-Sprees, Tug-of-war a n d Tie-up.

T h e rules hereby submitted are intended t o be passed upon by the committees appointed as requested. They shall then be presented to the respective classes for adoption.

Following old customs, the Cane-Sprees, the T u g - o f - w a r and the T i e - u p contests between Freshman and Sophomore Classes shall be held early in November. T h e committees appointed by the upper classes to conduct the F l a g Rush of the same college year, shall also be in charge of the above mentioned events. T h e committee shall be responsible for the following : ( a ) 1. Preliminary to the contest : T h shall select a strong (manila) rope, 1 inch in diam., 100 long; three cylindrical canes (2 in. diam., 3% ft. lo ash) carefully turned and smoothed ; thrice as many ropes (74 in. x 4 ft.) as there are members of the two lower classes. 2. They shall charge all expenses t o the Sophomore Class. 3. They shall mark out a square, inside of which the contests are to be held. ( b ) During the contest.

T H E CANE-SPREE.-The committee shall call the bouts ' the order of the weights, starting with the light-weight in They shall examine their clothing to see whether belts, buckles, shoes or other piece of clothing might be jurious to an opponent.

They shall note carefully during t h e actual coutes whether at any instant either man shall let go the cane wi both hands. T h e longest period during which both co testants shall be allowed to compete lying on the ground, shall be 6 minutes, at the end of which period the committee shall interfere and start both men on a second trial.

T h e cane shall be considered lost by one contestant has no hold on it with either hand.

T H E TUG-OF-WAR.-The rope provided shall be used.

Not more than 12 members of each class shall con No others than those considered necessary by the mittee shall be allowed within the boundaries set by committee. (See Article 3, Flag Rush Rules.)

T h e time of action, 5 minutes, shall be carefully not and the game declared won by the class which tugs the ro for % of its length into its territory, within time limits.

T H E TIE-UP.-Ropes having been distributed, the classe shall select temporary presidents, which presidents shall b presented to the opponent class. T h e president shall conn the same as 4 men if tied. T h e senior class committee shal record the freshmen, the junior class committee the sophomores which are tied, hand and foot, and brought to a place selected by the committee before the event commences.

Y. M. C. A. To-day there is in our colleges a movement which, thirty years ago, did not exist in any organized form. But due to the persistent efforts of the leaders, this movement has entered into the life of nearly every college in our country. Its object is to join in earnest, definite, Christian work those men who are interested in thisphase of life, and to bring every college man face to face with the more serious-the spiritual-hide of his life.

Three years ago a branch of the Young Men's Christian Association was organized at Stevens. This organization has grown steadily until at present there is a membership of fifty men.

T h e officers of the organization have decided to push this work tnore vigorously than ever next 5 ear, and have laid their plans accordingly. I n order to carry out these plans we hhall need at least one hundred dollars. Our present source of money will not provide us more than thirty per cent. of this amount.

We look to you for the remainder. The extent to which this work will be carried forward next year will, to a great extent, depend upon the support which you give us. If you support us heartily we are confident that the association will increase fifty per cent.

Now get behind this movement,-and push. Don't leave it to the other alumni, but do something yourself. I t -won't take many small checks to give us the necessary amount-so chip in, and send us a check to-day.
