T

H E R E was only one thing to regret about our game with Harvard-it was too short-from the spectator's point of view. I t is not very often that one has the opportunity to witness a lacrosse game so replete with faultless passing, clever dodging and accurate shooting, as was the contest in which Stevens defeated Harvard 6 goals to 2. I t is work like that which will fill the grand stand, bring out every student in the Institute and place the championship with us.

The first two goals were scored five minutes after the ball was put in play. Roberts started the scoring. H e caged the ball on a long pass from Armstrong after the visitors' defense had been well drawn out to the side. A few minutes later Brewer scored the second goal. The next tally was the result of a pass to Smith after the ball had gone out of bounds. Cunningham then scored the fourth goal and it began to look as if our opponents were going to be blanked. Cobb, however, managed to roll the ball into the net three minutes before time was up.

The score stood 4 goals to 1 at the end of the first half.

The second period of play, while not so fast as the first, was just as exciting and full of good lacrosse. In this half the men in the middle of the field showed up well for both teams. The persistence and vigor with which Thayer went after the ball when it reached our territory met with great approval from the grand stand. No scoring was done in this half until near the end of the contest. Then Furber scored for Harvard with the help of good passing on the part of his team-mates. This stimulated our attack men and Cunningham scored his second goal shortly after. Just before the final whistle blew, good teamwork gave Roberts a chance to cage the ball for our sixth and last goal.

For the first time this season the lacrosse team met defeat but the defeat brings no discredit to our men. The better team won! the visitors excelling us most of the time in team work and Passing. Altho it lacked the dash and vigor which characterizec our contest with Harvard, the game put up by our team was good and deserves the future hearty support of every man in tht Institute. A large crowd was in attendance, the grand stand having every seat taken.

THE STUTE got the ball the team would carry it up the field only to lose it on a poor pass near our opponents goal.

When the whistle blew for the start of the second half, our line-up was considerably changed. Again Hopkins scored soon after the face-off and increased her lead to 5 goals on shots by Breyer, Frank and Armstrong. In this half we might have gained a few points with the help of a little luck, but our score remained blank. The game was marked by clever stops on the part of both Blank and Sturken, the latter aiding materially in keeping the score of Hopkins down. Monday afternoon, April 27, Rev. David B. Eddy of Bast Orange, spoke at the Institute under the auspices of the Y. M. C- A. The meeting was a good one and well attended. Mr. Eddy talked about "Things worth while", and he proved hirnself to be a forceful, interesting and attractive speaker. The meeting was one of the best of the year.

Last Thursday, Mr. Frank V. Slack spoke on ~ o r t h f i e l ~ , its importance to college men, and its advantages. We want three or four men who will go to Northfield-for the students' Conference, to represent Stevens. If you are interested, see Whitehead '08 or any other Y. M. C. A. man.

Faculty and Institute Notes.

William Kent, Stevens '76, Dean of the I,:C. Smith College of Applied Science, Syracuse University, has proved that at least he is one of the few'men who can retain the admiration and respect of a class of college men thruout a four year course. When notified recently that his services would no longer be required at Syracuse, the entire Senior Class adopted resolutions in his behalf and later went on strike in a body because of their belief in the unfairness of the charges brought against him.

Dean Kent's dismissal followed his criticism of the construction of the Lyman C. Smith College. H e declared it was a firetrap, and asked to have the defects remedied.

The School of Mines Quarterly of Columbia University for April contains an interesting review of Prof. Gunther's recently published book Integration by Trigonometric and Imaginary Substitution."

The new Prep. School catalogue has just come to o u t hands and is a very decided improvement over those of previous years.

The book contains many interesting cuts and has a very effective cover. Altogether it is a credit to the Prep. School. .

The Constitution and By-laws of the Athletic Association have been printed in small pamphlet form and distributed to all the students.

Field Day. On Tuesday afternoon, May 19, the regular college exercises will be omitted and the following track events will take place on Castle Point field : 100 yard dash; 220 yard dash; 440 yard dash; 120 yard high hurdle; % mile run; 1 mile run; broad jump; high jump; shot put; hammer throw; throwing the discus; pole vault; interclass relay.

The entry fee is 25 cents for each event. Names and fees should be handed to one of the following men as soon as possible: Ballou '08, Crosby '09, Mauger '10; Thomsen '11.

This is to notify all students and Alumni that they are expected to be in Hoboken during Commencement Week-June 8 to 11 inclusive-and particularly on " Graduates' Re-union Day." See the next issue for details of arrangements.

That Cruel Dean !-Right here, it might be stated that bridge whist is barred at the University of Cincinnati. The co-eds protested that the most they ever played for was toothpicks, but with the stern dean it made no difference.

The Insignia Committee of Yale has decided to award a Y for championship in golf.

Since the foundation of Chicago University, John D. Rockefeller has given to that institution the sun1 of $23,924,322.

Student Forum.

I n one college, at least, an institution is in voguethat we could well afford to copy. A book, known as the College Bible," is kept, wherein every committee makes a brief report.

The custon~of entering these records has become a tradition which is faithfully carried out. Thus, from year to year committees, by consulting the book, find that they can save much time and labor in regard to the details of execution. Such matters as 'attendance expected, estimated cost, program, quality of service rendered by caterers, printers, etc., and a multiplicity of other details would be at the disposal of new committees. This book could also include the scrap-book previously mentioned in %'HE S'JIJTB. Any club with a surplus of seven or eight dollars could profitably invest such an amount in a fine leather covered book A SENIOR. that would do service for years.

Concerts. '

The Musical Clubs continued their season on Friday, April 24, with a concert in the Parish House of Christ Church, Bronxville, N. Y. A few of the men were unable to make the trip, but those who came did first class work and all the numbers were well received. The usual program was varied slightly by the substitution of a baritone solo by Lane '08, in place of the string quintet.

After the program the floor was cleared for dancing, and those who stayed were certainly given a good time. The party coming home on the early train enjoyed a rough house at the expense of the freshmen.

The annual Hoboken concert of the clubs was held Friday evening, May 1. A fair sized audience failed to crowd the auditorium-but lack of quantity was made up by quality. T h e orchestra and quartet were the features of t h e evening, the former doing its best work in the selections from Martha."

Dancing in Carnegie Laboratory followed the concert, music being furnished by Muller, of Brooklyn.

We were glad to have at least one member of the faculty with us on this occasion.

Tennis.

The tennis season at the 'Stute has at last commenced and the new courts are in commission. T h e regular spring singles tournament will soon be under way and as usual a medal will be awarded to the winner.

One court is reserved for the team, leaving the other two for the rest of the students. As is the case with the rest of the field, the preps. have the use of the courts on Saturday morning and on other afternoons (except Wednesday) until 4 P. M. T h e team should be a good one this year as all last year's men are back and new candidates are plentiful. The lateness in starting practice ought to be more than counteracted by the vastly increased facilities now at our disposal. Three matches have been arranged and others are coming. The following matches will all be played in Hoboken : N. Y. U.-May 6 , 3 P. M. Adelphi -May 9, 9 A. M .

four runs. Utz pitched the remaining innings, but was not particularly steady and Columbia ran the total up to 14.

Stevens played particularly well in spots. Utz's one-hand catch of Zwickes hard drive to left field and running catches by Bruce and Hearsey were the features.

McCloskey was hit hard in the seventh, but good fielding

by Columbia kept the tally down to three in that inning.

Prep. Notes.

Owing to the increasing enrollment in the school, an addition is being erected. The new part will consist of six rooms, making the school considerably larger. The extensions are on the south and north sides of the building, necessitating a change in the lower entrance. The school will accommodate many more students next year.

Stuyvesant High School 3-Preps. 11.

On Tuesday, April 28, the Prep. team defeated the representatives from Stuyvesant High School by a score of 11 to 3.

The Preps. played fine ball and errors were rarely made. Boyleston, the Stuyvesant pitcher, didn't seem to take a very great

hand twist to second base, but no one was there, and the ball rolled out-field. Saunders put up a fine game and made many strike-outs. Linke has quite the knack of dropping the ball when a man starts for second. Never mind Linke, "squeeze on to it ! You've got the arm. Hendricks caused a little excitp- ! ment in making a home run on a two base hit.

On May 1, the team from East Orange was defeated by Stevens Preps. by a score of 4 to 3. I t looked like a Prep. vic- ,# tory to the end and, until the ninth inni-ng, the score was 3 to 1. k.:' In that inning the Orange team took a brace and succeeded in bringing in two runs, making the game very exciting. This is c the first league victory for the baseball team and is a fine start toward winning the pennant.
