These criticisms were communicated by the president of the Phoenix Bridge Company to Mr. Szlapka and Mr. Cooper and were dismissed by them as unsubstantiated.

When the inspectors of the bridge found a bottom chord member bent-not merely kinked, but bent alike in every component part and on its entire length-who was it that perceived the seriousness of the situation? Not the scientifically trained engineering directors of the work. Birks laughed down all fears.

H e set his belief that the chord could not be crippling because, forsooth, it was not yet loaded to anything like what it was designed to carry.

I t need hardly be said that we do not draw attention to this matter as an argument against college training for engineers.

No man need be one whit less practical as an engineer for a fouryear course in an engineering school. The real lesson to be drawn is the lesson of humility. Let us never undervalue the experience of the man who actually handles and works the materials. Better yet, it is the duty of the engineer to be even more practical than the workman. The designer can learn things from the actual machine in the shop that he could never find out from the machine as laid out on the drawing board.

Theory is an absolute necessity ; but let us lose no opportunity to check the theories with the behavior of the material in the mill and the structure in the field.

Bowling.

Un ond day, April 8, the Senior Bowling Club ended its official undergraduate existence with a grand ' blow-out." I n the afternoon the senior team played the freshmen. The freshmen won the first game before 1908 was awake. After a strong rally with sufficient "kidding" thrown in to get the nerve of the freshmen the seniors easily won the following-two games.

At seven o'clock twelve seniors met at Meyer's Hotel and enjoyed an elaborate menu. Hot air was freely disbursed. Kirkman acted as toastmaster. Utz explained why a swift ball is best, while Lemcke showed with equal plausibility why a slow ball is best. Leahy then argued that they were both wrong, that a high ball is best. Cobb then expounded the intricacies of the curved ball. Dunbar vainly tried to teach Lemcke something about the theory of rivets. Klein proved that the expression of the face hart a great deal to do with the path of the ball. Mr. Buckley, a former member of '08 gave us a few points on holding down a job. Leisenring defended his character, maintaining that he was not so wicked as his association with Kirkman might indicate. Raabe, Leigh and Currier explained the disadvantages of being meal tickets. They thought Cobb and Lemcke could sympathize with them. Lantry, president of the bowling club, now made his last club speech. H e expressed his appreciation of the honor bestowed upon him and, in closing, invited the club to a box party at the Empire at his expense. After considerable debate the invitation was accepted. The fellows voted to maintain the club after graduation and then adjourned to the theatre. entry's box party was a great success.

Lacrosse.

Stevens 4-Crescent

A. C. 2.

The lacrosse team played its second game against the Crescent A. C. at Bay Ridge on Saturday, April 11. The game was played in a gale of wind which swept the field and made fast play impossible. The ball was faced off at 4.40 and four minutes later Roberts caged it on a long clean drive thru the defence.

Shortly afterwards Kennedy and O'Rourke scored for the Crescents, while Hamilton evened things up and the half ended with the score Stevens 2, Crescents 2. After ten minutes rest, the teams resumed play and then the better condition of the Stevens team began to tell. The Crescent squad had evidently not gone into training and running in the face of the strong wind soon had its effect, while for Stevens, Armstrong, Roberts, Hansell and Thayer kept the ball moving fast. This half was marked by the clever work of Roberts and Thayer in midfield and by the brilliant stops of many hard shots by Sturken at goal.

Cooley was substituted for Hansell, and Roberts and Armstrong went thru the Crescent defence for two more tallies. The Crescent attack could not get thru our defence which bunched closely around the goal, and failed to score again. Final score, Stevens 4, Crescents 2.

After the game, the visiting team was entertained at dinner by the Crescents and too much can not be said of the sportsmanlike and gentlemanly manner in which our team was treated by the whole Crescent squad and especially by their manager Mr. Bass. The line-up : STEVENS.

The Columbia University lacrosse team visited us last Saturday, and received their annual defeat-2 goals to nothing.

The score, however, does not represent the true merits of the teams ; our men excelled in both dodging and stickwork. The

shooting by the attack was wild and this combined with the excellent work of Trott, the Columbia goal keeper, prevented a larger score. I t started to rain soon after the face-off but this did not seriously interfere with-the playing.

Stevens obtained the ball on the face-off and kept it in Columbia's territory nearly 'all of the time. For sixty minutes our men sent shot after shot at the goal, all but two of which went wild or were stopped by the keeper.

After 22 minutes of play, Roberts received the ball in mid field and carried it thru the entire Columbia defense for the first tally. This was the only goal made in the first half. In this ' half Halm and Melitzer were ruled out for 3 minutes on account of rough playing.

Roberts scored the second and last goal 2 minutes after play was resumed in the second half. From this time on the ball travelled up and down the field, neither side scoring. On our part the shooting continued to be wild, many shots going far across the track. Whenever the ball reached our territory the defense had little trouble breaking up attempts of scoring.

Higher Up. N THE New York American of Sunday, April 12, appears an article regarding a tower, invented by Prof. Ostrup, which it is stated is to be built on Manhattan Island some time in the near future. T h e structure will probably replace the "Seeing New York" wagons, for there will be a trolley car, which will run up a helical track to the dizzy height of 534 feet, affording a view of the cities of New York and Hoboken from all points of the compass.

The tower will be built on a base 200 feet square and 90 feet high and will in many respects rival the Eiffel tower. On the top of the tower will be an auditorium and above this a restaurant where such delicacies as ice cream, pink lemonade and peanuts may be purchased.

I t is stated that Prof, Ostrup expects favorable reports from several financiers and promoters who are considering the project.

No doubt the novel summer garden soon to be located in the skies will be a favorite resort for many lovers of Coney, and the trade from would-be suicides, who now select the Brooklyn Bridge for their bridge-jumping exploits, will be by no means inconsiderable.

THE STUTE is very enthusiastic over the project and, when the structure has passed from the dream state to a reality, it will establish the custom of holding its annual STUTKdinner in the sky parlor and trusts the Professor will use his influence to secure bottom rates for this function.

Library Notes.

The Library statistics for the first three months of the year give an aggregate of 5,355 readers and visitors, a daily average of 70. The number of books and magazines circulated was 424, a decided gain over last year's figures.

The president of the Senior Class has turned over to the Library the copy of " ~ o b e r t s 'Rules of Order" which President Humphreys recently gave to the class, Five periodicals have been added to the list this year, making 103 that are now received regularly. Do we appreciate how short is the time until another class will have ceased to be counted as "under grads" ?

We want to remind Alumni particularly that this year should see more class reunions, and thruout the entire Commencement Week it should be no uncommon sight for our buildings and grounds to be thronged with Stevens men. The 34th" will be the liveliest ever : are you coming?

In the January number of the Indicator, on pages 84 to 86, a tentative program is outlined for a Graduates' Reunion Day, to be held on Tuesday of Commencement Week.

I t is proposed to have a dedication of the field, Alumni la. crosse game, President HumphreysJ reception, class reunions and dinners, Glee Club concert and dance, together with other features which may be decided on later.

This "Graduates' Reunion Day" will, when properly carried out, strengthen more than anything else the work of the Faculty! and develop college spirit at the Institute. T h e Alumni cannot) therefore, be too strongly urged to make it a success.

I t is a pleasure to announce, therefore, that copy is being prepared Hand and that on opening day in the fall each student Book. will receive a pocket edition of abridged Stevens information as a nucleus for an unabridged "Stevens Spirit".

of The Stute : DEARSIR:-In a recent issue you touched editorially on the possibility of a Dramatic Society at Stevens. I, and I know others, have often thought of this scheme.

Most of the larger colleges have a Dramatic Society and the "College Show" is an annual occurrence. Why should it not be so at Stevens?

Doubtless the first answer to this question would be " w e have no time. We already have too much work to do, and the presenting of a creditable show would mean too much work."

Then, too, there would be the question of a coach.

I t is true, we have a great deal of work to do at Stevens, but if the idea is feasible at other colleges, we, too, should be able to do it. After the football season is over and during the winter months there is not much doing in college activities, except for the musical clubs ; and as for work, how about the Intermediate Term ? I t is true that we should lose the services of such seniors, who were away on theses work and any juniors who might be on a boiler test or the ice machine the night of the show, but even at that, there would be a goodly bunch to choose from, and certainly among four hundred and fifty students there ought to be some dramatic ability. Then, too, we have a stage right in the Institute. The show might be given the week of the Junior Prom. and the proceeds (let's hope there would be some) could go to the Athletic Association. Certainly with so many fellows living so near the Institute, they ought to be able to get a pretty full house. Then, too, the musical clubs could do their share of the entertainment.

I t is too late to do much in this line this year, but next year the plan should be tried. Of course, it would be better not to make the first attempt too elaborate, say two short comic plays, so that no one would have too long a part to learn. I n all probability these could be produced without the services of a coach.

Once tried, I believe the plan would be a fixture, as an amateur performance is great fun. Anyway, nothing ventured, nothing gained, K. W . LEMCKE,'08.

Student Forum.

Right here at the Institute we have a fine specimen of modern art-the finest of its kind, some say. What I refer to is a bronze bust of the late Dr. Leeds, which is gathering dust in the "library" of the Morton Laboratory.

Recently a visitor, who came for the sole purpose of admiring our one piece of art? told me its history, and then added, "I hope that sometime they will wme to appreciate art, even in Hoboken. " Even in Hoboken-it looks lik-e a.-knock sa somebody. By the way, would not the Memorial Room be a inme appropriate place in which to keep this bust?

SEEBEE. A matter which I wish to bring before you is the establishment of a student employment bureau. Almost all of our undergraduates work during the summer month's, but those without a "pufl" often find it difficult to secure a position. The methods of establishing this department may be obtained from other colleges. The attention of our Alumni and Faculty could be called to our new department and certainly they could assist in securing summer positions for undergraduates and permanent E. '09. positions for the graduating seniors.

On Wednesday, April 22, occurred the marriage of Prof. F. The bride was Miss E. W. Young, daughter of Mr. David Young.

The Senior Class extends congratulations to the Dept. of Experimental Engineering in connection with recent domestic developments-and thanks for the resulting benefits accruing to the class. (This means the holiday).

Frederick Smithson, for many years in charge St. George Cricket Grounds, died on Sunday, April 12.

Mr. Howard E. White delivered an address on the Law of Contracts to the Senior Class on Friday, April 10. The tall was most interesting, and brought forth many valuable points it regard to law.

Prof. Ganz has been giving expert testimony in two in' fringement suits between the Weston Electrical Instrument Co.1 and the American Instrument co. . The fraternities here at Stevens have formed a baseball league, the championship games to be played during commencement week. On Saturday 18, the first game was played between Psi and Theta X i and the former won by a score of 11 to 10 &Linteresting and amusing game.

Class Notes.

The Senior Class have voted their deposits with the Institute, anlounting to over $1,200, to the starting of a fund which will eventually build the Students' Hall.

The Class Day committee has already begun work and is planning to make the function this year the best ever. Any good .suggestions will be welcomed. , The enterprising Senior Class is arranging to have lacrosse and baseball games between the two sections, and we will probably be favored again with an amusement similar to the Section A-Section B football game last fall.

The sophomores have decided to postpone the class theatricals until next year, on account of the lateness of the season.

Other Colleges.

At the opening of the next college year Harvard will establish a new department of Business Administration which will include both practical and theoretical work.

Johns Hopkins scored practically at will in the lacrosse game with Columbia on Saturday the l l t h , running up a score of 11 to 0.

Seizing forty freshmen who were trying to elude their vigilance and effect an entrance into the town armory, where the youngsters' annual banquet was held recently, the sophomores at Michigan painted their captives in brilliant hues, dressed them in outlandish garments and then hoisted them through windows into the hall where their fellows were making merry.

On their recent inspection trip to Chicago, students of Purdue University occupied an entire vestibuled railroad train.

Mrs. Russell Sage has given Princeton $250,000 for a new freshman dormitory building.

Trinity &-Stevens 6.

A rally by Trinity in the tenth inning defeated Stevens, 8 runs to 6, in the first game of 'Varsity baseball on the Castle Point Field, on Saturday, April 11. Woodle, Trinity's big freshman pitcher, established a strange record. H e struck out twelve men, but passed seventeen. His wildness allowed Stevens to tie the score in the ninth, but the visitors ended it in the following session by knocking in two runs. Stevens inability to find Woodle for hits at critical moments accounted for the defeat, the team having the bases filled and none out in one case without being able to tally. The score : R. H.

The game with C. C . N. Y. scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, was cancelled on account of rain.

Good Friday saw Stevens given its most decisive defeat since the inception of baseball as a 'Varsity sport at the State.

Wesleyan, with a mediocre pitcher but a superb fielding nine, turned the trick, and swamped the Red and Gray under an avalanche of 22 runs to 3. The team fielded listlessly, showed indiscretion in base running, and gave every evidence of being in the grasp of an early season slump. T h e fact that the Wesleyan men were at bat fifty-seven times in nine innings shows what sort of game it was. The score : R.

Paterson 5-Prep. 10.

On Friday, April 10, the Prep. team played a practice game with the one from Paterson High School. The day was rainy and the ball wet, making errors on both sides very frequent. The Preps, were a little wild in the first inning, but soon settled down and held their opponents. Many good hits were made, aod the fielding was good.

Erasmus 6-Preps.

The second game of the season was played with Erasmu$ High School on April 14. The Erasmus boys were a little too much for the preps. and succeeded i n rolling up a score of 6 to 2. But never mind-we hope to get another chance with them.

Columbia Freshmen 9-Preps.

On Saturday, April 17, we played our third game of the season. Again we were defeated, but only by one run.
