OLLOWING the established custom, commencement week is to be one of many activities and gaieties. The program in general is about the same as that of last year.

T h e Baccalaureate Sermon will be preached by the Rev. J. Clayton Mitchell, S, T.B., on Sunday, June 9, in Trinity Protest.uit Episcopal Church. T h e graduating class will leave the Institute in a body for the church at 10.45, wearing caps and gowns.

As usual, Calculus Cremation will take place the Monday evening following, ending up with the huge bon-fire at the Cricket Grounds On Tuesday morning the seniors and their friends will enjoy the pleasures of Class Day on the Castle Point Grounds. On the afternoon of the same day President and Mrs. Humphreys will hold their reception in the Carnegie Laboratory. I n the eveiiing tliere will be the alumni class reunion banquets and the invitation concert and dance of the Stevens Musical Clubs.

The annual lacrosse game between the alumni and the 'varsity will be played on the Castle Point Campus on Wednesday afternoon. I11 the evening the Alumni Association will hold its meeting in the Auditorium.

Thursday will be a most vigorous day. At 10.30, the Thirty-fifth Annual Commencement will be held in the Auditorilim. The Hon. P a i l Morton, President of the Equitable Life Insurance Company and Ex-secretary of the Navy, will address the graduating class. At 3 o'clock, the faculty will play the seniors on the new campus. T h e faculty will start the game with the following line-up: Sturgis and Kelly, the battery; Sevenoak, I b. ; Denton, 2 b. ; Pond, s. s. ; Pryor, 3 b. ; Gunther, r. f . ; Halliday, 1. f . ; Hedden, c. f. THE YEAR'S ACTIVITIES. G

Lacrosse.

While Stevens has had poorer teams than the lacrosse team of 1907, she has never had a more disappointing one. A particularly strong team was not looked for, as seven men had been lost by graduation. But when the 'varsity began playing, it made last year's record look very small. The attack proved to be the fastest that Stevens had had in years, scoring- thirty-four goals in the first four games ; while the defense was much steadier than was expected, and improved with each game. After disposing of City College of New York and the New York Lacrosse Club in the usual manner, the team seemed to be in fine form and swamped Harvard and behigh by the scores of 9 to 1 and 12 to 2, respectively. Then the hopes and expectations of Stevens went sky-high-the championship was confidently looked for. But this elation was not to last long-the team n ~ e an t overwhelming defeat at Baltimore, on May 4, at the hands of Johns Hopkins and returned home completely crushed after being also badly beaten by Mount Washington. The play of the attack did not improve. A very sad exhibition of lacrosse was put up at the Columbia game, for altho the 'varsity won by a large score, this was only due to the decided weakness of the opponents. Swarthmore and Cornell both came to Hoboken with the intention of winning by rough play and weight-and they did it.

While the work of the 'varsity defense was creditable, the attack proved very weak in shooting goals. To start with a team that was considered the best Stevens has had for years and to break only one record-that of being defeated by Cornellwas mortifying. Not much satisfaction could be derived by defeating New York Lacrosse Club the second time at the end of the season, in a rough and well-played game, after the 'varsity had broken training.

Much blame must be laid upon the management. If Swarthmore had been played on April 27-the usual time-an easy victory would have probably resulted for Btevens. Then it can be seen from the schedule that five games were played in two weeks, with the result that only one was a victory for the 'varsity.

The amount of time Stevens men have for athletic development does not warrant such a heavy schedule. The result shows that it is too great a strain upon the men.

The lacrosse team and management can find no fault with the support the student body has given. Large crowds have viewed almost every game ; the men have not only been present themselves but have brought many of their friends to cheer t h e team to victory. And if cheering could have accomplished it, all our home games would have been victories.

Financially and socially the season has been s~ccessful. The team had a pleasant trip to Baltimore and Washington. Baseball.

With all but three of last year's team back, and with Mr. Saunders as coach, a very successful season was predicted.

After four weeks of indoor practice and a few days of ontdoor work, the team went to Brooklyn to open the season with Pratt. It was only after a hair-raising, ninth-inning finish, which netted four runs, that the game was won.

Rensselaer, C. C . N. Y., and St. John's proved easy victims for the Stevens team. The second Pratt game and the Rutgels game were won by sensational ninth-inning rallies. With Hallsted, Stewart, Ridgway, and Meigs out of the Lehigh and Trinity ames, the team was so badly crippled that a victory in either case could not have been expected. As a whole, the playing of the team was consistent thruout the season, the Colun~biagame being by far the poorest one played.

Next season's prospects are particularly bright, as no m n will be lost by graduation, and some very good material will enter from the Prep. Bowling'.

During the past year bowling has taken a sudden jump into popularity. Altho it was found inadvisable to enter the Intercollegiate Bowling League, a team composed of men from the senior and sophomore classes met some other college teams and on the whole did well against them.

On January 19 the team lost to Columbia, last year's champions of the league, altho three games were necessary to decide the match. The next college game was rolled against New York Law School, on March 13. New York won three straight games, two of them by one pin only.

I n a return match with New York Law, on March 18, Stevens won the odd game and, on April 3, Columbia was defeated by two games to one. I n this match high game of the year was rolled, Stevens getting an even 900 in the second.

An inter-class bowling tournament was started rather late the season, and, as a consequence, all the matches were n o t rolled. The senior team was victorious, winning the series from each of the other classes. ill

Tennis.

The tennis season started off well in the fall with a doubles tournament, which was won by Berrian '08 and Butler '08. There was no singles tournament tins spring, however, due to the bad condition of the courts.

Ill spite of the lack of home practice, the team made a good showing in the outside matches. The results were : Wesleyan 1 Stevens 2 Pratt 3 'Ă&#x201A; 2 The club is looking forward with nmch anticipation to next fall? when it is expected that the courts on the new field will be ready for use.

Football.

The M u s i c a l Clubs.

--

The Commencement of a year ago took from the'stevens musical clubs nearly half of the men, and their loss was as severely felt as the loss of veterans always is. The quartet was the greatest sufferer, losing three out of four men. The glee club, losing twelve out of twenty, was a close second. Half of the members of t h e mandolin club graduated with 1906, while the orchestra was deprived of a number of good men. The freshman class, how-

ever, responded nobly to the call made upon it, and the clubs during the past season have not been below the standard of preceding years.

The season of 1906-07 marked the introduction of organization into the affairsof the clubs, and it certainly was badly needed.

The association is now on a sound footing, especially as regards financial matters.

Concerts have been given at East Orange, the Stevens Club of Newark, Knickerbocker Field Club, Glen Ridge, Kearney, and two at Hoboken ; everywhere the reception was gratifying.

The Stevens branch of the Y. M. C. A,, organized but little over a year ago, now has on its membership list nearly ten per cent. of the college enrollment. Every effort has been made this winter to obtain permanent headquarters for the association, and it is now very comfortably located. Plans are under way for a strong opening in the fall. Every new application is a step toward the outgrowing of the present quarters and the securing of still more pleasant rooms, with greater privileges for the members.

Chess.

T h e end of the college year brings with it the close of the first chapter in the history of the chess club, and judging from what has been done in the short time the club has been active, there is a strong probability that Stevens will be represented in intercollegiate chess next year. Permanent organization was not effected until late in January, so that it was possible to arrange but one outside match. Stevens had no difficulty, however, in defeating Rutgers, altho that college boasted of having downed Princeton. The team consisted of Schueck '07, Inglee '08, Chandler '09, Landesmann '09, Peper '09, Upson '10, Wood '10.

Schueck '07 is the first winner of the Institute championship cup, which was presented to the club to be contested for annually.

With an early start and added interest on the part of the student body next year, the chess club bids fair to be one of the strong attractions during the winter mouths.

The Engineering Society.

Altho at first sight it would appear that the society has not enjoyed a year of unusual activity, still it has put itself in a position which makes future improvement possible.

Most of the business meetings were taken u p with discussions leading to better methods of management, and means for making the work more attractive. One of the new rooms under the old Chemical Laboratory has been secured for the use of the society. The lecturers during the year were, fortunately, men actively engaged. Two are worthy of special mention-Dr. Hallock, who spoke on "Artificial Mineral Waters," and Mr. I,. B. Marks, who took for his subject "Engineering of Illumination."

"The

Indicator."

The Indicator has enjoyed a successful year under the editorship of Prof. Shoudy, and has entered npon this year with Mr. J. H. Cuntz as managing editor. Under Prof. Shoudy many very valuable papers were contributed, and especially interestii'ig was the July, 1906 number, which contained a very complete illustrated article on the Morton Memorial Laboratory, including an account of the dedication exercises.

T h e October, 1906 issue contained a complete index of all the volumes, greatly increasing The Indicator's usefulness.

T h e January number of this year proved to be a most creditable first effort for Mr. Cuntz ; and we feel confident his future work will be above criticism, for Mr. Cuntz has had considerable experience in technical journalism.

The Indicator continues to experience delays in publication, but that seems to be a necessary evil. However, its great technical value never diminishes.

"The Link."

The Link of 1907 appeared in the latter part of May, somewhat behind schedule time. The delay was unavoidable, being due to illness of the former editor-in-chief, Mr. Leonhard, which necessitated his resignation, The cover of this year's annual is simple yet it is perhaps the most attractive of recent years. Indeed, the whole tone of the book is one of simplicity, and the effectis decidedly pleasing.

The usual space is given to the fraternities, class histories, clubs, athletic records and the like, which are up to the average as regards get-up ; but the half-tones are disappointing, to say the least. The editors have seen fit to continue a custom inaugurated last year-that of including in the annual a summary of the year's activities, and this adds greatly to its usefulness as a book of records.

The individual write-ups of the members of the junior class are one of the features of The Link. These are very cleverly gotten up and are a great improvement over the knocks" as arranged in former annuals. The photos are not up to par with the literary matter, however-a cause for complaint in the book in general.

The miscellaneous matter, consisting mainly of faculty c roasts," is very entertaining for those not roasted1' and great credit must be given to the board for the discrimination shown in editing this department ; for everything is good." Taken all in all, The Link of 1907 does not suffer in comparison with preceding year-books.

When the present board of editors assumed charge of THE STUTS,they made it their aim to improve the publication, and they have spared themselves no toil to accon~plishthis purpose.

How far the improvement has progressed, the critical can readily discern for themselves.

Financially THESTUTE has been very successful, this year's surplus being greater than that of the two previous boards combined, The business manager, Mr. Klein, has worked earnestly, and success has crowned his efforts.

Professor Ganz sails for Europe on professional business June 15. During the summer he will travel in England, Germany and France, and while abroad will visit a number of prominent technical schools.

Professor Ganz has just completed an extensive electrolysis survey of gas piping in Long Island City for the Consolidated Gas Company of New York.

The collegiate year just closed has shown a remarkable advance in more ways than one. First of all, there has been the ii~troductionof the honor system in exanlinations for all classessurely, a most gratifying step. Then a general reorganization has taken place in various activities, notably in the A Year-s n~usicalclubs and the Engineering Society, by means progressof which these interests have been put upon a more systematic and business-like basis, with a rest~ltant increase in effectiveness. Another encouraging sign is the agitation concerning a constitution for government of classes. I t is bound to be realized within a short time that the adoption of a

set of governing rules by each class is a wise and necessary move.

There has been a marked improvement shown in the manner of holding elections during the year. The system adopted by the athletic association is a notable iniprovement over the n~ethods formerly i11 vogue and will prove much more satisfactory. A similar scheme should be used in all elections whatsoever.

The Institute has shown a steady growth. While there has not been a decided increase in nun~ericalstrength, the standard, both of requiren~entsfor admission and for con~pletionof the course, has been raised, thus bringing about an in~provementin rather than in quantity.

R e v i e ~ sof student activities are given elsewhere in this issue, so that the5 will not be gone into here; but, suinming up, it may cox~fidentlybe said that the year passed was decidedly one quality of progress.

Walter H. Lange.

The sad news of the death of Mr. Walter H. I,ange '06, which occurred on Thursday, May 30, 1907, came as a severe shock to his many friends among the faculty, graduates and student body. Mr, Lange was taken sick in March with typhoid fever, and after a long and severe illness seemed well on the road to recovery. A relapse set in, however, and owing to his weakened condition, 11e was not able to withstand an attack of peritonitis, which finally caused his death.

The deceased was born in Hoboken on April 9, 1881. After from the Hoboken High School, he took up practical electrical workt etltering the employ of the Western Blectric Co. A desire for a more advanced technical training led Mr. Lange to enter Stevens Institute, in Septen~ber,1902.

The showing made during the four years at this institution was highly creditable. Mr. Lange won the Macy Prize for superior work in clien~istryand was one of the honor nien of his class. H e served as president of Tau Beta Pi during.his senibr year and also very capably filled the position of Bditor-in-chief of THZSTUTE, After g r a d i ~ a t i o ~Mr. ~ , I,ange entered the en~ploy of the Tindel-Morris Co., at Eddystone, ,Pa. Here a rapid advance was shown until sickness forced him to give up work and return to Hoboken.

While in college, the deceased was well liked and admired by all with whom he came in contact. His upright character, gei~erosityand sincerity endeared bin1 to his classmates, while the faithful performance of all duties entrusted to him had placed him in high esteem with his employersT

The report has been delayed to this late day because of a clierished hope that the balance would be greatly swelled by receipts from delinquent subscribers. T H E STUTE prize to the all-around college champion may induce more students to participate in the events, cause greater effort on the part of the contestants and be an incentive to a much-needed increase in the interest of the student spectators. T o what extent these hopes will be realized remains to be seen.

[We take pleasure in presenting in this issue the following article, the facts of which were furnished by Mr. Hobart B. Upjohn, M. E., Stevens '99, so11 of the late Mr. Upjohn, architect of the main Institute building. We insert a cut of the building as originally designed with the towers. T h e building as it now is, was finished off with tlie tower base, but with provisions for its completion at some future time. T h e cut is taken from The Sfevrns Indicator, June, 1885. I n 1870, the executors of the will of Mr. Edwin A. Stevens, the course of carrying out his wishes, accepted the plans of Mr. Richard Upjohn for the new Institute building. The original desigii, was quite different from the present. T h e style adopted was Victorian Gothic-a style which was the outgrowth of the Gothic revival which took place in the first part of tlie century. T o complete the composition, a central spire was designed, which extended sixty-eight feet above the present tower.

I t was to be constructed of wood, the lower twenty-four feet developing from the square of the tower to an octagon eleven feet across the base. Above this rose a lantern ten feet high and terminating with an octagonal spire to the full height, The design also included two similar spires over the side entrances, rising thirty-one feet above the roof. The base of the building had a series of round cusped windows each with eight cusps.

These were a t the top of the terrace and tended to extend the length of the building. They have been recently replaced with larger windows so as to light the shop in the basement.

was provided with two reception rooms on either side of the main entrance. These rooms are now used for the offices of the President and Registrar. Where the old library and physical laborstory are, were large "general school roonls," 46 ft. x 67 ft. The west wing was provided with a model room and two recitation rooms, 15 ft. x 20 ft., and the east wing, which was built two years after the main part, had four recitation rooms. The old shop, now used as an auditorium, was originally planned for an auditorium with a stage, 28 ft. wide x 17 ft. deep, with two

rooms at either end. T h e auditoriun~itself was 74 ft. x 50 ft.

The second floor was arranged with two large rooms, which occupied all the space beyond the offices at present occupied by Drs. Denton and Geyer. These rooms were of the same size as the g e n e r a l school rooms' ' directly beneath, and were designated Philosophical Hall (to the west) and Library (at the eastend.)

The wings were divided into small recitation rooms, similar to those on the first floor.

T h e third floor of the main building was $6 provided with four studios" with skylights, and a drawingroom, on the west, and five rooms, on the east, the largest being 27 ft. x 42 ft., and located at the extreme east end. This room was set apart for Music. T h e third floors of the east and west wings were, as in the floors below, provided with rooms for recitations, each wing having three rooms, 15 ft. x 18 ft., and one, 15 ft. x 28 ft., a t the end. There was no provision for access from the main building to the wings on account of t h e difference in floor level between the two buildings. The basement was not fully excavated until later.

Track Champion.

Louis J. Henes, the winner of the track championship for 1907, has always been prominent in athletics. Noted for his ability to sprint, a development along other lines brought him into prominence in his freshman year, when he was the individual winner of the field games. The results in the following spring showed a tie for first honors between Henes and two of his competitors, but again this year he pushed to the front and succeeded in winn i n g the handsome bronze cup offered by THESTUTE, Vol. 11.

I n the meet, on May 21, Henes secured first place in the 100yard dash, 220-yard dash and 120-yard high hurdles ; second in the broad jump and in the discus throw; and third in the shot pui-a total of twentytwo points.

T h e subject of this article has also shown marked ability in the baseball line, having been a member of the 'varsity team for three years.

This spring saw Henes captain of the baseball team, which position he filled very acceptably, as well as leading Ifis team-mates in battilig.

Football has also received its share of LOUIS J. HENES '08. attention. While a member of the 'varsity team, Henes performed creditably in the games, showing a "dash and go" which was very contagious.

Calculus Cremation.

With due respect to a prisoner of his rank and fame, Calct1lus will tried and cremated by the class of 1909 on June 10.

The ceremonies will start promptly a t 7.30 with the trial, wl1icll will be held on the lot adjacent to the Carnegie laboratory.

Witli the pronouncing of sentence, the classes will line up in the following order : seniors, sophomores, juniors, freshmen.

The line of march will be as follows : From the Carnegie laboratory to Fourth Street, to River, to Sixth, to Hudson, to Eighth, to Castle Point Terrace, to Eleventh, to Washington, to Fifth, to Bloon~field,to Thirteenth, to Garden, and down Ninth to the Cricket Grounds.

The ceremonies will be of the usual hilarious character, with none of the old features left out, and some novel ones added.

The committee has planned the parade complete to the last detail. The transparencies are especially amusing this year.

1 ' he unondaga Indian lacrosse team failed to appear on Saturday, May 25, but fortunately Manager Meeker was able to arrange a game with the New York lacrosse Club to fill the vacancy. The visitors came with the expectation of retrieving their early season defeat, but after playing twenty minutes of the second half and seeing that they could not win, the New Yorkers apparently took advantage of a fight, started by one of their own men, to call off the game.

Stevens played hard right from the start and immediately after the face-off the ball was carried down by the attack.

Several good shots were taken, but Briner stopped them all and prevented scoring. Finally, after several minutes play, the ball was carried down to Stevens" goal and a shot tried at close range, but Sturken proved himself Briner's equal by stopping it and sending it up to the attack. The attack now came down the field with a rush, which showed that they meant business, and for several minutes the shooting was rapid and hard. Drinkwater took a try at the goal, which everyone thought to be ~uccessful-the umpire even raising his hand ; but on taking- a second look the ball was found to be on the outside of the net. When play was resumed, Roberts succeeded in caging the sphere for the first tally. Three minutes later the first half ended.

The second half started at 5.20, and for fifteen minutes the ball see-sawed back and forth, the defense of each team doing such excellent work that neither attack seemed able to get in to shoot. At 5.35, Drinkwater made the second goal for Stevens, and seven minutes later he followed it up with another.

Soon after this, as the ball was again going down to our

attack, Mclntyre was body-checked and, thinking Starzenski had done it, he dropped his stick and rushed at him ; seeing Starzenski's danger, Doctor Traeger and Meeker interfered by seizing McIntyre and preventing a personal encounter. The referee ruled McIntyre off the field, but when he refused to also remove Starzenski, the New Yorkers declined to finish the ganie and withdrew from the field. I n the meantime, the ball had been passed on down to Armstrong who niade a fourth tally, which, however, was not counted, as the referee's whistle had previously blown. The line-up : STBVBNS. N. Y. The baseball team pulled itself together on Wednesday, May 22, and by opportune hitting defeated Rutgers at Hoboken.

Rutgers gathered in two right off the reel, when Sturgis hit Baker and Bosterle flied to left. Nelson singled to right and Greene ambled. Segonie then sent an ugly bounder over Sturgis' head and two men scored. Hovey fanned and Hughes was an easy out.

Rutgers tallied another in the third on a gift by Sturgis, a steal and an error by Henes. Stevens also scored once. After Little fanned, Sturgis and Meigs walked and Ridgway was tickled by an inshoot, filling the corners. Henes then placed a beautiful one-timer to center, scoring Sturgis, but Meigs was nipped in an endeavor to tally.

Stevens dittoed in the fourth when Roberson got a life by Greene's low throw. He stole second, but in sliding to the bag, his knee came in such sharp contact with McNeil's face that the left cheek bone was fractured, necessitating surgical attention, After Utz and Steinmetz died, Little beat out a slow grounder to Durfee. Sturgis walked again, choking the pockets ; Meigs then tapped the leather over third, scoring Roberson. Kelsey tried hard, but hit only the air.

Stevens evened up matters in the fifth. Ridgway walked,

was advanced on Henes' sacrifice, and stole third. Roberson then belted one to left, tying the score, but was forced by Utz. Steinmetz fanned.

Rutgers broke away in the seventh, scoring on errors by Kelsey and Roberson. Stevens did the trick in the eighth. Utz popped to catcher, Steinmetz and Little walked, but Sturgis fanned. Stewart had a good eye and filled the stations. Kelsey then showed what he could do by knocking the cover off the ball with his tooth-pick and dispatching it to the right field fence for three quarters of the circuit, winning the game. Ridgway flied out. Rutgers could do nothing in the ninth.

Sliarp fielding by Roberson, Little, and Henes kept the Reds from scoring on several occasions during the game. The score : RUTGBRS.

At the Commencement Exercises on Thursday next the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering will be conferred upon Mr. John Fritz, the prominent iron and steel man.

Prep Notes.

At a recent meeting of the N. J . S. A . A., one of the delegates from a school i n Jersey, the name of which in delicacy we will withold, saw a championship banner of rather a rusty date hanging in the hall of our seat of learning. "Gee ! " said the '< aforementioned delegate, they ought to put that in alcoliol ! " We didn't say much then, but if we only could engage that youth in conversation now ! We'd tell him the story of our life.

We'd give him a full account of the standing of his school at present. Also we might be persuaded to tell him the recipe for

winning baseball games. However, he must have derived a lot of pleasure from his witticism.

Let all our fellows and all others take a look at the title acquired by the baseball learn this year-Baseball Champions of the New Jersey Interscliolastic League. Pretty flossy-looking, E h ? Well we earned it fairly. We played clean ball all the way thru and obviously, better ball than anyone we met. And the credit-the fact that among the players the credit cannot be given to one or even to a few is mainly responsible for our success.

We had a team tliat worked as a unit, and worked well.

Outside of the players and their efforts the credit should go to Mr. Saunders. Every game showed the results of his work, and his ideas of the game, carried out by the players, are responsible for our victories.

The last and perhaps the most uncertain league game took place at Morris Park on Friday, May 31. Considering the threatening weather, our representation was good; as good as Newark's, at all events. It was a good game all the way thru and at no time certain. At the end of our half of the ninth, the score was 4-0. Newark started right off as if she meant business and succeeded i n bringing in two runs before we could get them out. However, we won, not only the game, but the championship. The lacrosse team forn~allydisbanded last Friday night at an entertainment given the team by "Ton~mie'' Stilhnan. Pangburn '09 was elected next year's captain.

I t has been a remaikable season, the team having lost only once and then under conditions which were not a fair test. '1 he single defeat was received a t the hands of the C. C . N. Y. Freshmen ; the game was played i n the pouring rain and was really more of a hockey match than. a lacrosse game. C. C. N. Y. promised u s a return game to be played any day the week follow ing but altho their examinations were three weeks off, they found
