S on the afternoon of Tuesday the 10th of September, 1861,

the Great Eastern, the largest ship then afloat, left Liverpool on her first voyage after her trial trip, one of the passengers, Mr. Hamilton Ela Towle, a young American civil engineer, remarked to a friend that he hoped they would have a storm as he would like to see how she would behave. His curiosity was fully gratified.

For the first two days the voyage proceeded uneventfully.

The "floating hotel," as they called her, going at a speed of from 12 to 14 knots an hour, was as steady aspossible. But on Thursday about noon a breeze sprang up which soon increased to a gale with tremendous seas. I t was an equinoctial storm, the worst the captain had ever experienced.

When it first commenced to blow, the tackle of one of the boats became unhooked leaving it suspended by one tackle and the Captain in trying to steady the ship, while this was being rectified, found to his surprise, that she would not answer to her helm. Altho not then known, the fact was that the rudder pin had been broken by the force of the sea and the wheel had no control over the rudder.

The top-sails were now run up in an endeavor to steady the ship, but they were immediately torn to ribbons and the Captain, seeing there was only one thing to be done, stopped the paddle-engine and ordered the boat to be cut away.

T h e ship was then once more started on her course. The passengers went down to dinner, and from that time on the rolling of the vessel was terrific and a series of breakages commenced which lasted without intermission for three days. Everything breakable was broken; furniture, fittings, services, glasses, piano -all were involved in a common wreck.

T h e paddle-wheels soon had to be stopped again as several large sheets of lead got lose in the engine room and were thrown from side to side with tremendous violence. When the engine was once more started it was found that one of the paddle-wheels had been bent and was grinding into the sides of the vessel,

threatening to tear a hole in her. Of course, this made it necessary to stop the paddles, leaving the ship with only her screw to depend upon. She now lay quite helpless at the mercy of the waves, rolling about like a log, her decks often making by actual measurement an angle of 4S0.

thought that the ship, being so large, would be perfectly steady.

Consequently, tables, chairs and mirrors were thrown from side to side of the ship. Water poured in thru the port holes and two oil tanks broke, filling the hold with two hundred gallons of fish oil. The passengers too were thrown violently about. No ( Continued on page 249. )

Lacrosse.

The lacrosse season opened Saturday, April 4, with the annual C. C. N. Y . game, and as is usual against these opponents, the 'Varsity was victorious. City College was no match for us, and since this game is considered more in the nature of practice with the object of trying- out all the available candidates, 24 men in all played on the Stevens line-up. Team work and systematic playing was prevented by a cold wind which swept the field, making the players think of a means of obtaining warmth rather than the ball. * Directly after the face off Robert got the ball, ran it down the field and made the first score of the season. During the first half five goals were made, and in the second two more were added, making the score 7 to 0.

The air breathed by the school children of Newark is to be tested by the consulting engineer of the Board of Education.

On Wednesday, March 2 5 , the annual Smoker was held at d Fellows' Hall. The usual smokes" and refreshments were served, and as in previous years the musical entertainment was supplied by the Stevens Clubs.

Wrestling was the feature of the affair, nine bouts being contested. Rickenbach easily won the championship of the Institute, defeating all of his opponents, even allowing from 20 to 30 pounds weight.

The results of the bouts follow : lightweight ; Rickenbach '08 defeated Voorhees '10 ; Rickenbach '08 defeated Keuffel '11.

A. Elections.

On Friday, April 3, the ballots for the annual election of officfi'rs of the Athletic Association were counted, and the followingtflgn were elected to serve until the spring of next year :W. von Voigtlander, president ; Drinkwater, vice-president ; Armstrong, treasurer; Meigs, secretary ; Haynes and Hamilton, sophomore representatives ; Mann, freshman representative.

Dunbar was elected manager of the tennis team ; Meigs and R. P. White were elected assistant football managers. About 250 votes were cast. While an improvement over last election, it still shows a sad neglect on the part of the student body. > +. .\ ^f, Baseball.

On Wednesday, April 1, the baseball team played its first game of the season, defeating C. C. N. Y. 8-7, after a very long and listless game. Poor hitting, the fault that has been prevalent with Stevens teams in recent years, prevented our winning by a larger score. Several substitutes were tried out, and they look promising. The features of the game were a beautiful running catch by Meigs in deep right field, and a home run with two men on base by Utz. The score by innings:

Flag Rushes.

T h e rules for flag rushes have been adopted by all classes.

As suggested, rules for the other meets are now being drawn up by the same Junior Class committee. They will appear in a following issue of this paper, and the committee again intends to have them acted on in a similar way to that employed before.

Faculty and Institute Notes.

By the first of May or earlier the freshmen will begin to give up their Saturday mornings to surveying. Much of the work will thus be accomplished before the supplementary term.

T h e course will occupy the same amount of time as in previous years, but it will be more comprehensive, giving the students practice on the work they might need after graduation. T h e plane table and compass will be omitted this year.

T h e surveying equipment has been increased by eight new transits, two new levels, and much minor apparatus. These new instruments have all the most modern attachments.

A Tagliabue viscosimeter for the determination of the viscosity of lubricating oils has been obtained as a present to the Morton Memorial Laboratory of Chemistry from Charles A. Tagliabue. Dr. Stillman wishes to acknowledge the services of Edmund C. Kemble, '95, manager of the manufactury of Mr. Tagliabue.

J, H. Longstreet, '79, of Bordentown, N. J., visited the Institute on Tuesday, March 31, for the first time in fifteen years. Mr. Longstreet was greatly impressed by the new buildings and equipment.

Rudolph Decker, '99, who has been doing engineering work . of importance in Brazil for the last six years, wasa recent visitor to the Institute, having come north on a short trip.

Nearly a hundred men have rented lockers in the field house on the athletic field. There are about fifty more available.

T h e Bristol Company of Waterbury, Conn., has come under the control of Prof. William H. Bristol, whose inventions this company has been manufacturing since it was first organized in 1889. Prof. Bristol assumed active charge of the management of the business on Friday, March 28, and now owns the majority interest.

Mr. Bristol has taken out a large number of patents during the last three years on new instruments. One of these which will be soon put on the market is the Long Distance Electric Thermometer, designed especially for indicating and recording refrigeration, atmospheric and drying temperatures. This instrument will fill a long felt want for use where it is desired to quickly indicate at some central station by means of switches the temperatures at several distant points.

Other Colleges.

Annapolis played its first game of lacrosse last Saturday and met with defeat at the hands of Johns Hopkins, by a score of 7 to 1.

At a recent meeting of the Swarthmore ~ t h l e t i cCouncil, it was decided that of the two branches of athletics-lacrosse and baseball-the latter should be left to take care of itself, while lacrosse should be fostered with the idea of making Swarthmore famous in that game.

Ex. Men students at California, clad in women's gym suits and long kid gloves, recently gave an exhibition of Rugby foot-ball as a lady's game.

Tau Beta Pi. \

Last Wednesday the following men from the Junior Class were initiated into Tau Beta Pi : Carniaux, Crosby, Fortmann, Harrison, Naef,' Nyland, Peper, W. von Voigtlander, W. P. Wright. After the initiation the Chapter adjourned to the Hotel Chelsea, where they were joined at a banquet by several memberÂfrom the Alumni and Faculty.

Interclass Bowling.

The juniors recently defeated the seniors in the third interclass game by a score of 736 to 623. This gave the Class of 1909 best two out of three for the match.

The'Sophomore-Senior match resulted in a victory for 1908.

The first game went to the sophs. 640-624 ; the remaining two to the seniors, 713-575 and 677-633. <r

A CRITERION FOR FRESHMEN. Improves Surveying Class.

Since Professor J. C. Ostrup has been in charge of the class in surveying at Stevens Institute, the students have taken greater interest in their studies.

Class Notes.

At a meeting on last Friday the class elected the following men to serve on the Commencement Committee : Leisenring (chairman), Ballou, Butler, Cone, Hamilton, Kelsey, Perkins, Roberts and Kirkman, ex officio.

A Class Day Committee was also elected and consists of Phelps (chairman), Cobb, Cone, Currier, Lantry, Lemcke, Sturken, Utz and Kirkman ex officio.

One hundred dollars of the surplus of the Link of 1907 was voted towards the Senior Dance with the understanding that as much a s possible of the amount would later be returned to the board when the class treasury is in better condition.

The class president was authorized to procure a copy of the class constitution to be placed on the new bulletin board.

T h e subject of action on the new plan of student self-government was brought up for discussion, but it was decided not to vote on the plan at all because the seniors would not be affected by the new system and it was thought best not to influence the under-classmen one way or the other.

T h e sophomores have elected their Calculus Cremation committee as follows : Murphy, Messenger, Meigs, Mauger, G. A. Pfeiffer, Polhemus, Wiske and Scully.

Chess.

On Saturday, March 28, a match was played on seven boards with N. Y. Law School. The players on the Law School team were a group of experienced players, including graduates of N. Y. U., Princeton and Yale. One of them was intercollegiate chess champion for two years while at Yale. One of our team drew with him. T h e match resulted in a win for Stevens by the score of 3% to 2%, one game being won by Stevens by forfeit.

I t is proposed to form a triangular chess league, in which Stevens Institute, N. Y. U. and Rutgers are to be the members.

Prep. Notes.

The baseball squad is now in fine condition. Owing to the ~xcellentwork of Mr. Saunders, a winning nine will represent he school and defend the championship against the other league earns. We have a team to be proud of and it only needs the upport of the entire school to cheer it on to victory. Many of year's team fill their respective positions, forming the nucleus of the team.

The line-up, as has been chosen up to this time, and which will probably represent the school, follows: Baker, Hendricks, 2nd base; Callahan, 3rd base; Cooke (Capt. 1, short stop; Schultze, pitcher; Wright, 1st base; Saunders, right field ; Suike, catcher; Pritchett, center field; Fallen, Landsdell, left field; subs, Runge.

The schedule arranged by Mr. Ryan is a very promising one and is a fine result of his efforts, there being only two open dates thruout the entire season. (.Continued from page 240.) one could keep on his feet. The cook had his leg broken in two places and in all twenty-five fractures occurred.

The captain and officers, having by this time discovered that the rudder-pin was broken, tried various plans to steer the ship, but without success and were beginning to despair.

In the mean time Mr. Towle, the engineer previously mentioned, thought he would go down between the decks and examine the arrangement of the rudder to see if he could devise any plan for again obtaining control of it. Working his way aft by the light of a candle, he found the remaining portion of the rudder post.

I The rudder weighed 30 tons and was supported by a collar resting upon friction rollers (see Fig. 3) the lower end being stepped in a shoe which extended backward from the bottom of the vessel, "H" being the rudder post of wrought iron 10 in. in diameter, and "K." the supporting collar. This collar was of cast iron and consisted of a central sleeve fitting upon the rudder post, a flat bottom plate with a groove for the rollers, and

six radiating flanges 2 inches in thickness. I t was 18 inches in height, of conical form, pretty closely resembling a church bell.

This collar was keyed to the rudder sleeve and secured by a massive nut C," which was screwed on the post above the collar. It was just above the nut that the rudder was broken, the fracture extending down into the nut.

Mr. Towle conceived the idea that a large cable might be wrapped around the collar and connected with pulleys and in this way the rudder might be controlled. The objection to this was the small size of the collar ( 2 ft. 9 in. in diameter at the base and 15 in. at the top) giving a very short lever to resist the tremendous power of the waves against the broad rudder. This difficulty Mr. Towle thought he could overcome by wrapping successive coils of cable around the collar until he had obtained a diameter sufficient to give him the leverage required. He ex6 i

amined the collar and fortunately found holes some 3 inches in diameter thru the bottom plate-a hole between each pair of radial flanges. The plan that he formed was to place each alternate link of heavy cable between each pair of the radial flanges and secure the link in place by lashing it with a smaller chain passed repeatedly thru the holes, around the flanges, and around and thru the link. H e measured the several parts and then went down into the hold and measured the largest cable. The tiller was 18 ft. long and the chain provided to operate it was 1-9 the size of the main cable, requiring a drum 4 f t . in diameter in order to give a length of lever proportioned to the strength of the cable. After making a complete drawing of his plan Mr. Towie carried it to the chief engineer and offered it to him, but was told in so many words to mind his own business.

On explaining his plan to some of the passengers he was strongly urged to present it to Captain Walker, but being a very young man and not desiring another rebuff, he declined. Later, however, when he found that the chief engineer was about to unscrew the nut with the design of securing the lower tiller to the middle post in its place he determined to speak to the captain, as he knew that if the nut were unscrewed the rudder would drop down into the sea and be lost.

Captain Walker after examining Mr. Towle's plan gave him complete authority to carry it out, and at five o'clock Saturday evening he began his work.

Meanwhile Captain Walker had succeeded in moving the massive cable back to the stern. A hole was cut in the upper deck, the cable passed down and then commenced the difficult labor of winding it upon the collar. Besides the rolling of the ship, the rudder was being constantly beaten by the waves, turning the collar back and forth and thrashing the massive cable about the iron deck with a noise like thunder. Just as they were about to start winding it, one end escaped and, slipping thru one of the scuppers, dragged the whole chain to the bottom of the sea. No one had dared to stop it. Not to be discouraged, another cable was found, and this time they succeeded in lashing the first turn around the collar. The second coil was lashed to to the first, and third to the second, until a mass of chain 4 feet in diameter was bound around the rudder. The ends of the cable were now carried around the two short posts or bits (bb fig. 1 and 2 1, which were provided for holding the stern cable in mooring the ship, and connected with tackles for taking up the slack, while smaller chains attached to the two parts of the cable leading from the rudder post were connected thru the tackle DD with the steering gear of the lower tiller. The labor was very dangerous, Mr. Towle nearly having his foot crushed.

At ' 4 A. M. Sunday he informed the engineer that all was ready, but this man, who had opposed him in every way from the start, said that his apparatus would not stand the strain, a was not until 5 o'clock in the afternoon that Captain 8

finally allowed Mr. Towle to give a few turns to the screw. Th order was given and the ship moved off again under perfect con trol and took up her course for Queenstown. As the paddle wheels were destroyed the vessel was propelled by her screv alone, but she moved steadily on her course and arrived at Queenstown, Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
