A Proposition.

T o the Editor of The S u e : HAVE read with much interest E. N's. article in the last STUTE.I am in a position to fully appreciate what he says about fellow-students neglecting their duties towards student activities by saying "I can't, I have too much to do now," "I am too busy," etc.

If we had only the college requirements to work at, a n d . thought nothing of the college social or athletic obligations, what would college life be ? I t would be four of the most dreary years of a young man's life ; he would be mentally overbalanced.

The more events a t college, outside the roster, the more the" '. college spirit" grows. I do not say that the Stevens spirit" is dead; it is there somewhere, but needs considerable nagging at times to make it break out into wild enthusiasm, such as is seen in some of the larger colleges. Why is it that many of our men have to be begged as a personal favor to attend a cheer rehearsal or a meeting of the athletic association, or mass meeting or any other such meeting? I t is because they do not realize the necessity of participating in all these affairs, but say, "I've got a date now ; they won't miss me anyhow."

I have known it for a fact that notices have been put on the Bulletin Board in the main lobby for a week and some fellows never take enough interest in college events to look at them.

Some I found last fall, who, on a Friday before a football game, asked me whom we play the next day, even after the game had been posted in the lobby and in THE;STUTEcalendar.

Why is all this? I think it is because we haven't enough live enthusiasm. Instead of offering to help, or help after being asked, many of our fellows leave all the work to be done, to a few, most of whom are overburdened with work already.

I have long thought of various ways of fertilizing the Stevens spirit" and have come to the conclusion that we should sow the seed of enthusiasm at an early stage of a student's college life ; in fact, prepare him for his life here just prior to his entrance.

Having lived near Princeton for some years, I could not help noticing their great college spirit. Their spirit is due to a great

After looking concluded that if th6 Stevens freshmen could thus be introduced to the peculiar ways of "Stevens life," that it would increase our spirit and also the manner in which we take up new issues.

With this in mind, I took the trouble to outline a similar for our needs. (I enclose it on an extra sheet.) This ag from the one I read. 1 Stevens Graduates Give a Dinner. .

The graduating class of Stevens Institute, some seventy in number, had their farewell dinner last night at the Manhattan Hotel. The class went into executive session when the dinner began, the doors being closed to the outside world. All the class officers and most of the members made speeches. The class stood the test well, most of them being able to claim their hats and coats personally at the checking rack.-N. Y.Times.

Senior Dinner.

On the memorable evening of Thursday, March 12, over 70 members of the Class of 1908 gathered around the festive board at the Hotel Manhattan apd celebrated one of the pleasantest events yet enjoyed by the class.

Ridgway. who was chairman of the committee, acted as toast~aster. During the course of the dinner several congratulatory telegrams were received with much applause.

The m'enu was excellent and the menu cards were simple, yet displayed the good taste of the committee. The floral decorations of ferns and carnations made a handsome setting for the

gated. His auditors listened w i t h wonder to descriptions of themselves as "soaring meteors, " bad, bold men, " "boy politicians," etc. H e hit a great many nails on the head and his stories furnished lots of amusement.

Atwater followed with some very pertinent remarks on ' T h e Present."

H e seemed to have an infinite number of ready stories and jokes up his sleeve, which were enjoyed by all.

Lantry followed with his ideas about T h e Future." His predictions were based upon a dream and lie certainly saw some of us in sorry plights. H e was carrying us through the paths his visions had led him, to the discon~fitureof many, when his dream suddenly came to an end and relieved the nervous tension.

Phelps spoke about " ~ o b s . " H e alluded to the present dreary outlook in the job market, and warned the fellows about following in the footsteps of some of the graduates who had missed their vocations. H e proposed a plan whereby the students could mutually assist one another in locating after graduation and urged the fellows to adopt it.

A. E. Skinner tried to give some of his reminiscences of ' T h e Past." H e was not so successful in the reminiscent line, but kept us laughing with his 'asides." H e duly gave honor where honor was due, and lambasted where lambasts belonged.

Several of the seniors were called on to speak extemporaneously and many exchanges of compliments resulted. Mr. Buckley, who left us in the freshman year was there and gave a short talk when our graduate member" was called on.

Thruout the dinner many songs acconlpanied the music L L and yells were a-plenty. Several coon" songs, rendered by Inglee, Lane and Utz, three members of the quartet, received great applause.

'' Indicator."

Following long established precedent the Indicator has again upheld the adage "better late than never." The January nunlber has made its appearance, and has many articles of unusual general interest. Prof. Ganz's pet subject ' iElectrolysis" heads the list. The next article by E. H. Peabod y '90 describes a sin~pleformula devised by the author to supplant the Pfaundler formula for radiation correction employed with the bomb calorimeter.

Classification of Industrial Enterprises' ' by W. D. Ennis '97 is an exposition of some of the first principles, that every engineer employed in a managerial capacity should know. ' T h e Municipality and the Public Utilities" by H. S. Wynkoop '88 makes some very timely comparisons. "Car Lighting" by R. M. Dixon '81 was read with interest.

I t is an odd co-incidence that articles should appear in this issue by two members of the first STUTEBoard. F. W. Hausmann '05, who so successfully conducted the business interests of Volume I., has written an article about the work he is engaged in-iron mining in Alabama. A. H. Potbury '05, the enthusiastic associate editor of Volume I., bas contributed a most interesting account of the developments in San Francisco since the earth-quake .

The complete list of Alumni has been omitted from the January number, contrary to the usual custom, but will be included in the July number instead.

The Alumni notes are unusually complete, the 1907 notes probably being of greatest concern to the undergraduates, for the list of positions held by the recent graduates is read with interest by all their friends.

Some excellent suggestions are made regarding field dedication and commencement week which THESTUTEhopes to help push later on.

Mr. Voigtlander '09 recently resigned from the Indicator Board and he has been succeeded by Mr. Terwilliger of thesame class.

Any seniors who wish to subscribe to the January and April numbers only, prior to graduation, may do so at half the price per annum, by notifying their class representative. i 6

Junior Dinner.

The Junior Beefsteak Dinner was held at Reisenweber's on Monday, March 16. I t was felt by all the loyal 1909 men who attended that it was a great success.

The hall was very unique with its grotesque decorations, and it was just the place to have a jolly good time. Why shouldn't we enjoy the novelty, with half kegs to sit on and slab board tables to eat from ? After all had satisfied their appe-

tites, we had many a joke, some stories and some good speeches.

W. voii Voigtlander acted as toastmaster. Nyland, in a talk on "System" referred to Mr. Hedden's idea of a debating club and appealed to the fellows to get b u s y a n d organize one for the "Old Mill." Moss, on the topic of Spirit" gave some just knocks to those who didn't show college spirit enough to "come out" for something outside of regular college work.

But who will forget Blanchard's spirited address on class and college spirit? Not many. And don't forget our old friend Seth X. H e Was there all right !

After the regular speeches, several were called upon to cite experiences and many a laugh went round.

T o conclude the evening, all the college songs were heartily sung and many cheers given, after which the whole crowd marched down Broadway to 19th St., whistling for the amusement of the bystanders.

Wasn't it a jolly good time, fellows?

Chess.

On Saturday, March 14, a chess match between New York University and Stevens was played on four boards, in the Carnegie Laboratory Computation Room. Our team lost by the score of 1%to 2 % . All of the games were very interesting and considering the fact that the best of our men were unable to be pre-ent we did very well.

N. Y. U. displays a great interest in her team, as was shown by the fact that several of her students accompanied the team.

W e regret that we cannot arrange to play them a return game this season, but we hope that we will meet them next year. The score follows: BOARD.

I n issue No. 13 were printed a few suggestions, criticisms and the like, grouped together under the title which appears in the margin opposite this paragraph. These items had been handed to us by students from time to time and we Students' simply held them until there was a sufficient numForum. ber to make a respectable showing. What we want to know now is whether or not this method of spreading student ideas appeals to you; if so we shall be glad to print paragraph comniunications in each issue, as was done for the one time ; if not, this further attempt to branch out from the old rut will be abandoned. Sit down and write; the only gauge by which we can measure your enthusiasm is the bulk of our correspondence.

Recently a letter came to THESTUTO office from a graduate of the Class of 1906, in which the suggestion was made that Alumni interest in the paper would be increased by including a colun~nof items concerning the doings of men *lumni whom we knew while a t college. True, the Stevens Column.

Indicator contains such a column, but its pages are only fresh once i n tliree months. I n the editorial preceding this, we have asked for "ideas" from undergraduates; now we are going to ask for short news items from the Alumni.

When you do anything, or know of someone who has done something, write a few words on a postal and ship it on. Don't say it isn't interesting; let us be the judge. T h e success of this venture depends, too, not on us, but on you.

THESTUTEBoard spend its surplus in getting out such a book this year? Think it over ! Talk it over ! Before the next issue we want a whole cart-load of opinions on the subject, and many of these will be printed.

Anything which can increase "Stevens spirit" is worth talking about and working for. Talk !

The Handbook.

Regarding student self-government, much is heard both pro and con. I n theory, a t least, it sounds well. I n many cases it would work out all right ; in some it would not. Take a recent incident a t the Institute : A freshman (reason unFacing known) made a practice of appearing with a misthe Issue. matched pair of socks-one green, the other brown.

Judging from our knowledge of student nature this was a downright invitation for trouble. As was to be expected, some of his classmates divested him of his shoes and he was obliged to walk from one building to another in his stocking feet.

Unwilling to stand the joke at his expense, thefreshman brought the affair to the President, who suspended six offenders for a week on the charge of hazing.

Probably the President acted justly; in fact we think the sentence light, as the r u l e book reads.

What would the student self-government committee have done under t h e case? Maybe they would not have considered the offense hazing'. I n fact, they might have asked the offenders why they did not also remove the obnoxious socks. The students do not always take the same point of view as the Faculty.

Library Notes.

T h e Librarian notes with interest the suggestion made in the issue of March 13 regarding an "Institute Scrap Book."

Last June during Commencement a collection of memorabilia was made, including the Commencement number of THE STUTE, programs, order of the academic procession, etc. Since that time items of interest referring to the Institute, Faculty and Alumni have been saved and will form a nucleus for the Scrap Book. " Class secretaries will take notice that copies of class banquet menus, dance cards, and concert programs are solicited.

ACCURACY.

A contractor sent a green Irishman to measure the cap on a chimney. When he came back, the boss said : Well, Pat, how "will sor," was the reply, "it's the length of long was it ?" the rule, and the length of the hammer and two bricks." , 1

Dr. Humphreys has announced that Dr. Sevenoak will assist him in his work with the seniors and juniors in Business sngineering. Dr. Sevenoak will quiz the students on the President's lectures and help them over some of the knotty questions.

Tyson '08 has presented to THESTUTE the red and gray jacket worn by the duck at the Rutgers football game of last year. The jacket is at present adorning our clock.

Six members of the Freshman Class were recently suspended for one week on a technical charge of "hazing".

The offence, described in detail in another column, was inducing a classmate to walk shoe-less between two of the college buildings.

Dr. Wendell spent a few days in company, with Dr. Mac Laurin visiting the Harvard School of Applied Science and M. I. T. Dr. Maclyaurin, who was formerly of the Board of Directors of Technical Education in New Zealand, is now Professor of Mathematical Physics at Columbia.

The smoker was scheduled to take place last Wednesday at Odd Fellows' Hall. Particulars will appear in the next issue.

An addition will be built to the Stevens School during the coming summer, which will afford six new class rooms and increased basement area. Three of the rooms will be used by the Prep. School and three by the Institute. Altho the annex will be used jointly by the Institute and Prep. School, there will be a separate entrance for each.

The lockers in the Field House will be available for students' use on April 1. The rental of these lockers will be $1.00 per year (Senior Class, for balance of season, 50c.) The Field House is closed from December 1 to April 1, but the students may leave their belongings in the lockers during the winter if they so desire.

Keys may be obtained at Prof. Pryor's office, where a plan of the lockers may also be seen.

Work has been stopped, for the present at least, on the new board fence along the Hudson St. side of the field. The citizens of Hoboken objected to the appearance of the fence.

Other Colleges.

The Evening Sun advocates the awarding of letters to college presidents and faculty members who frown on athletics, and says 11 of the plan surely it would move President Butler to a more tender regard for sport in general were he allowed to sport a 'C' of baby blue upon a snow-white sweater as he goes to and from his office, and if President Elliot could be given a 'Varsity 'H' perchance he would look at athletics more from the standpoint of a Dr. Brown."

Seventy-three Princeton students were obliged to leave college on account of the recent examinations.

T h e faculty of Lehigh has recommended to the athletic committee that the number of games for each season in each department of athletics be limited as follows : football, 8; basketball, 8; lacrosse, 6; baseball, 12; track, 4.

Cornell upper classmen have recently adopted a regulation ,which forbids freshmen to sit in a trolley car when by so doing an upper classman would be obliged to stand.

An eligibility rule for members of athletic teams has at last been passed by the authorities of Carlisle. I n future no professionals or four-year men will be allowed to play and this will put them on a better standing among the colleges than formerly because no restrictions of any kind have been placed on candiEx. dates for the teams of that institution. /

T h e senior class at Purdue have a celebration very similar to our " Burning of Calculus," only their victim is called ' McAnnix3' .

Due to a disagreement over the guarantee, the Rutgers football team will not play N. Y. U. next year. I t has been customary to play this game annually in New York on Election Day and it was always one of the great events of the year.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell are rivals for the distinction of having the first formal course of electrical engineering in this country; both colleges graduated their first electrical engineers in 1885.

T h e students of M. I. T. have submitted a formal petition to the faculty for a week's vacation in April next year.

Senior Dance.

May 7th has been set as the day for the Senior Dance. This is the last event given by the Class of 1908 -and the committee hopes to make it a fitting end to the record of the class for having had excellent and well attended affairs. I t is hoped that as many as possible of the class will be present with their fair partners and help to make this last social meeting a great success.

Class Notes.

At the class meeting held on Wednesday, March- 18, the rules for Student Self-Government, as proposed by the Faculty, were discussed. The Class Dean, Dr. Sevenoak, was present to give the desired information concerning these rules as they were brought up.

Each article of the preamble and the first four of the rules were taken up separately and fully discussed. Where the class could not agree with the presented rules, amendments were re commended which will be forwarded to the Faculty.

Another meeting of the class was called on Wednesday March 25, to complete the discussion on the remaining rules.

1910.

O n Wednesday, March 18, the Sophomores adopted the rules for the flag rushes as laid down by the Flag Rush Committee of the upper classes.

I t was also decided to give a Soph. show. The following committee was appointed for this purpose : Bristol, Crane, Ifeask, Messenger, Polhemus, Scully .

At a meeting on March 18, the class voted to accept the Flag Rush rules as published in THEfhTYI"l'of March 13.

Cooke was elected bowling manager. Mann was elected temporary baseball captain. All men trying for the freshman baseball team must come out for the 'Varsity.

Musical Clubs.

The first concert of the season 1907-8 for the Stevens Musical Clubs was held at the Commonwealth Club, Upper Montclair, N. J., March 13. As an initial performance it was a decided success, and credit is due the various leaders for the clubs they have turned out. As usual, the orchestra gave the opening number, followed in order by the Glee and Mandolin Clubs, Malei Quartet and String Quintet. The Quartet responded to a triple encore at each appearance. A large and generally appreciative audience was present, and everyone seemed satisfied that the evening had been well spent. Following the program the floor was cleared for dancing and many of the fellows caught the last train to Hoboken.

The second concert of the season was given by the Musical Clubs at East Orange, N. J,, on Friday evening, March 20. I t was held in The Brick Church Lecture Room. Had it not been for the very successful concert given at Montclair in the week preceding, the East Orange concert would have been considered a record one. The clubs were received with enthusiasm by a large audience and the usual number of encores were demanded.

The quartet went on with practically two new men: Mr. Beckwith '09, who took the place of the first bass, who was uflable to attend, and Fonda '09, who occupies the position held by Halsted '10 last season.

We can safely say that the Institute, to our knowledge, has never had a better Orchestra, or a better Glee Club. I n spite of the fact that the Mandolin Club is much in need of more men, it too is an improvement over the club of last year.

There is but one difficulty which invariably presents itself and that is starting the concert on time. The orchestra always gives the first number, and either the train leaves too early for the orchestra's leader or something else prevents his prompt appearance.

Lacrosse Exchanges.

The following clippings, the first from the Stute, of Stevens Institute, the others from the Harvard Crimson, show that some of our rivals are keeping wideawake to the lacrosse situation: The spring lacrosse practice will begin shortly. Last year the team lost but one game. The team this year will have to work to beat this record. -The Stute.

Notes have not been very plentiful. W h y leave all the work to one man ? Every Prep. who knows of anything worth printing should let us have it.
