OW often we hear the remark, "well, you fellows at Stevens will never be able to enjoy a true college spirit because You are too near other amusements and haven't got the real Alma Mater love, that should exist.

Say, fellows, put Stevens first; it's worth the trouble; don't give it a second place. If you have two engagements for one date, and one belongs lo Stevens, keep your Stevens date. This means right now and it also means for the spring lacrosse and baseball season.

We realize that Stevens is a bit handicapped by the fellows who commute and when they get home you can't get them out again.

Stevens should be situated in some small and beautiful hamlet with a gorgeous lake etc., but it is not. Then let us make the best of what we have.

Love the old mill, love it so much that everything that is accomplished at the 'Stute and everything that is said about it, is of personal interest.

I t is sad enough when THESTUTEboard must call for literary contributions. Why don't you try something in this line?

You may think your article or drawing is rotten, but the rest of us will think it is good.

THESTUTEroom should be flooded so that a selection could be made of what should go into publication. This contributing constitutes part of that spirit for Stevens.

Your stay at Stevens is short and only lasts for four years.

I s this inspiration in us strong enough to carry us through life?

At the Alumni Dinner two elderly gentlemen were speaking I together. One said, George put your head on my shoulder. I want to see if it feels the same now, as it did 20 years ago when you sat beside me at the Old Mill."

A fellow might say, "well, what can I do to help along a allege spirit ? " I h a v e heard several songs about Stevens, comosed by Stevens men, but they are sung only by a few fellows. hey are dandy, too-catchy and full of spirit. Why don't you ring them out in some form, so all can sing them ?

And don't you think the fellows who come out for theteams have spirit? Well they have; they have a true love for Stevens, and for the athletic side of the 'Stute.

How about a "show" at Stevens? I don't know what kind of actors we have, but I warrant we would have a lively time at anything the fellows gave. Other colleges have them, so why not we.

Whatever you do, dosomething for Stevens and do it now.

You then have the real Stevens" spirit and the Alma Mater love.( I t is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved. at all. " I

Altho copy for the main body of the Link of 1908 has gone to the printer, for some time yet advertisements may be inserted. Prior to the final closing of the advertising forms on March 20, by which date all copy must be in the hands of the business manager, the Link Board will allow a commission of twenty per cent. to students on ads. solicited by them. The field has not been worked out by any means, and the opportunity for making a little easy money is a good one. For contract blanks or further particulars see J. W. S. Moss, business manager.

The Short Inspection Trip.

On Wednesday morning. February 12, Prof. b a n and eleven members of the Senior Class started on the short inspection trip. T h e party arrived in Trenton about half past nine and went first to the potteries. Next the DeLaval Steam Turbine Go's- Works were visited. This company makes turbines up to five hundred horse-power. The party learnt many points of interest concerning the turbine.

After luncheon we visited J. A . Roebling's Wire Works.

Our guide knew his business thoroly and before starting out gave us a general description of the piocess of wire manufacture.

We first went through the wire mills, then saw the process of galvanizing, then the process of making cables, which was of particular interest. From here we went down to Philadelphia, arriving at Greene's Hotel in time for dinner.

On Thursday the program was changed a little to suit unforeseen circun~stancesand the party went first to the Pencoyd Works of The American Bridge Co. Here we saw the process of casting the steel ingots and the rolling of the various structural shapes in the mills. I n the afternoon we went to Bilgram's and saw some very ingenious machinery for the cutting of all kinds of gear wheels, much of which Mr. Bilgram explained personally. From here the party went over to the League Island Navy Yard and saw the new battleship Mississippi which is just going into commission.

Friday morning saw us all at the plant of the New York Ship Building Co. I n the drawing room, the main point of interest was the marble slabs used in laying down the ship's lines. These were used to obviate shrinkage. The battleship New Hampshire was nearing completion, and near her there are two light-house tenders, a six hundred foot oil steamer and the battleship Michigan on the ways, so that altogether hard times were not very noticeable at this place. We went aboard the oil steamer and the Michigan. I n the afternoon we visited the mint and saw Uncle Sam's shekels being turned out, and later went to Baldwin's. This shop is now running only every other day.

After witnessing the manufacture of the various parts of locomotives we went into the erecting shops and saw locomotives in all stages of construction.

That evening we found Mr. W . D Forbes of Hoboken at the Hotel, as he had come down on business. I n honor of the occasion we celebrated by going to a vaudeville show. I t was amateur night and the aftermath was just as enjoyable as the show itself. 130th Prof. Furman and Mr. Forbes enjoyed it immensely.

Saturday morning found us at Nicetown at the works of the Link Belt Company. Here they use an elaborate system of shop management installed by Mr. Taylor, one of our graduates.

Everything is highly systematized and we were informed that while the cost was only increased ten per cent. the output was increased one hundred and ten per cent. We also saw some very ingenious slide rules for calculating the speeds for cutting tools and the time it should take for each piece of work. The work was so assigned to machinery that every lathe, drill, etc. was working at its best efficiency. For example, a job requiring 20 horse-power was given to a machine designed to work at 20 horsepower and not to a 30 horse-power machine. Mr. James M. Dodge, ex-president of the A. S. M. B., very kindly spent considerable time in explaining the system to the students.

Next we visited the University of Pennsylvania. We were taken thru the new engineering building, which is magnificent; saw the gymnasium and swimming pool and then the students' club. Prof. Marburg, head'of the Department of Engineering, devoted considerable time to giving interesting explanations to the~students. I n the afternoon some of the party went to the Bourse and to Independence Hall.

Altho the weather was not of the dryest, all those who went on the trip had an excellent time, and will not soon forget it, and all unite in thanking Prof. Furman for the trouble and pains he took in arranging it.

Meeting of I. C. A. A. A. A.

At the annual meeting of the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletics of America held Saturday, February 29, at the Fifth Avenue Hotel it was decided that the field and track meet should be held this year at Franklin Field, Philadelphia.'

This decision was made in spite of the recommendation of the executive committee, which stated that altho Harvard had the meet for the two previous years in succession, the meets were the most successful ever held both financially and athletically, and this would warrant another year at the Stadium.

The rulings in regard to cross-country running were amended and hereafter it will be required that only 7 men start and 5 qualify instead of 9 starting and 6 qualifying as previously. This change was only effected after considerable debate, in which Syracuse and Stevens took the leading parts.

I t was also decided to appropriate $1000 for the expenses of the American team at the Olympic Games to be held at London this year.

G. D. Thayer and W. von Voigtlander were the Stevens representatives at the meeting.

Athletic Association Meetings.

During two special meetings of the Athletic Association held February 27, and March 3, the following amendments to the constitution were effected : The division of the athletic dues, set aside for athletics, shall be as follows: Football Department-30%, Lacrosse Department-30%' Baseball Department-30%' and General Fund -lo%."

Of the man* set aside for the General Fund, Tennis is to Ireceive 20%. ' T h e Executive Board shall choose from the two assistant managers in each department of athletics, the managers of the respective 'Varsity teams. The manager of any 'Varsity team shall be chosen immediately after the season preceding the season in which he is to serve as manager." Heretofore the 'Varsity captain selected his own manager from the two assistants of the previous year.

"The S. A. A. shall be awarded"to all members playing in at least 60% of the football or lacrosse scrub games or in 40% of suchscrub games and one 'Varsity game.''

Football numerals shall be awarded only to sophomores and freshmen playing in 40% of the scrub games and in the interclass game. ' ' Lacrosse numerals shall be awarded only to sophomores and freshmen playing in 40% of the scrub games and 60% of the interclass games."

T h e insertion of the clause, "40% of the scrub games", is intended to bring out more men for the scrubs and to make it more difficult to obtain numerals and correspondingly increase the value of class insignia.

I n order to develop new material before the regular spring practice begins, it was decided to hold two of the interclass lacrosse games in the fall and the remaining three in the spring.

As tennis is now to receive part of the regular athletic fund, its control is to come under the Athletic Association and hereafter a manager will be elected by the Association.

STUTE has something up its sleeve in the way of a plan for spending this year's surplus. Keep your eyes peeled; there is a slow fuse burning, but it can't last forever. T h e bomb ought t o burst-if oar calculations are correct-within the next month.

A t the end of a term there is frequently much confusion respecting inexcused lateness and absences. All Students' this confusion might be avoided by each professor Forumposting periodically (say weekly) a list of students not excused. T h e matter could be straightened out while fresh in the memory of both professor and student.

Prof. Knapp has now evolved a new system which he is working on the two lower classes. All sketches must now be accepted in the drawing room, and must then be personally shown to him and again accepted. By this method students lose several hours on each sketch.

Is it necessary that each sketch should be accepted twice?

If assistants are competent'to accept drawings of the upper class; men, why should the same rule not apply to the lower classes?

How about an 'Institute Scrap Book' ? I would suggest that, say the Library, keep a scrap book on a large scale in which

can be found interesting clippings, copies of class menus, dance orders, concert programs, commencement announcements, etc.

This would furnish a continuous record of social and other events at the college which might prove of considerable interest as the years pass by."

The endowment of a chair of Administrative Economics has been advised by Pres. Humphreys. I t is hoped that this endowment will not be raised entirely by re-examination fees in the present department of Business Engineering.

T h e committee of the Junior Class hereby requests the class presidents of the Freshman, Sophomore and Senior classes to have their appointed committees pass on these rules.

Rules for conducting the Flag Rush as adopted by the Junior Class Committee : 1. According to the constitution of the classes there shall be appointed a committee of three members of each of the two upper classes to conduct the rushes.

2. T h e committee shall be responsible for the following: (a) Preliminary to the contest: I t shall select a strong pole (circular, 6 inches diam. at least and 16 feet long, to be buried 4 ft., 1 2 ft. above ground) to be carefully smoothed and padded (first 6 ft. above ground level) to be provided with two cross trees (circular 2.5 inches in diam., 3.5 ft. long through center of pole at 10th and 11th ft. from ground), to be provided with a flag (oblong, 24x18 inches white canvass with red numerals 6 in. high, of Sophomore Class), furnished for the purpose by the Sophomore Class.

(6) During the contest: No one beside the members of the two lower classes, the committee in charge and those persons who shall be considered necessary shall be allowed within the boundaries set by the committee, on the field where the contest is to be held.

If the committee decides to have a man on the pole to defend the flag, the man shall be provided with rubber (tennis) shoes. The time of halves (15 minutes) shall be carefully noted by a member of each committee of three and furthermore the rush shall be discontinued at the request of any one committee member if seconded by another committee member of a different class than that to which the first member belongs.

3. The rush shall be considered to be won by the Freshman Class i f t h e f l a g is tornfrom the pole within time limits.

Southern Club Dinner.

A dinner of several of the Alumni residing near Washington, D. C., was held at the University Club of that city on Feb ruary 22. The dinner was so successful that it was decided to hold another dinner next May at the Baltimore Country Club.

Pres. Humphreys was the guest of honor. The others present at the dinner were : H. H. Adanis, J. H. Bates, W. J. Bray, Gordon Campbell, W. H. Chatard, J. E. Cromwell, J. A. Davis, William Darbee, R. Ex-Senator Septimus E. Niven, of lyundenberg, recommends the adoption of the following rules for autoists, to be observed while traveling through East Goshen, Pa. : 1.-In case a farmer's horse will not pass a machine, the autoist will take his machine to pieces and conceal the parts in the grass.

2. When approaching a curve or a road crossing, the autoist will take the horn and go ahead on foot, sounding the horn one minute and listening the next.

3. I n case of a breakdown, the autoist will remove his machine to the nearest ditch pending repairs and cover it with grass and brush, in order that no horse may take fright.-The Auto Era.

Other Colleges.

A'demonstration of a baseball pitching machine was held in the cage yesterday afternoon before Coach Piand several members of the baseball squad, *Ttes matteme consists of a breach-loading, compressed air gun, set about five and one-half feet from the ground. The barrel is five feet in length and the speed, direction and curves of the pitched balls are automatically controlled.

Whether or not the management will see fit to adopt this innovation is as yet undecided .-Harvard Crimson.

Columbia has started cage lacrosse practice with seven of last year's team as a nucleus.

T h e mooted Swarthmore bequest having been found to amount to only $300,000, instead of a cool million or more, the ethical problem involved in rejecting it because of its anti-athletic clause has become easier.

Lacrosse practice has been started at Harvard. There were twenty-nine candidates for first practice, nine of which played on last year's team.

Lafayette made a profit of $1,145 on her football season.

T h e baseball team cleared $1,140 last spring.

Ex. A California student who permitted the publication of an article about the California University girls smoking, was divested of his clothing and covered with fly paper.

Ex. Both Columbia and N. Y. U. have Student Boards. At N. Y. U. the board is called the Student Cabinet and its objects are, to supervise student activities, to act as an intermediary between the faculty and the students, and to act as a judicial body.

T h e following quotation from the constitution of the Columbia board explains its purpose : "The Board shall have authority and it shall be its duty to take into consideration on its own motion or on charges preferred, the conduct of any student or body of students which may seem detrimental to the interests of the University or its good name, and, having conducted an investigation, shall itself take or recommend to the appropriate authorities such action as it deems just and reasonable to the end that such detrimental conduct shall be properly reprehended and any repetition of it prevented."

T h e authorities of Lehigh University are now considering whether the- university campus should be used for sites for fraternity houses. T h e objection is made that they will be monuments of special classes of students and not representatives. Ex.
