The Publicity Bureau.

That Stevens Institute is inadequately represented in the public press is only too true. That the Institute and the student body have the remedy in their hands is also true. If the papers are supplied regularly with accounts of Stevens games and happenings, they will be only too glad to print them and soon, a demand for Stevens news having been created, they will come seeking the news.

Here is a field for work which at Stevens is untouched and in which there is an immediate and tangible reward. The Publicity Bureau needs workers-needs men who under its direction will help supply papers in New York, in Newark, in Jersey City, etc., with the news. Some of the dailies have a number of correspondents in a single college ; cannot a Publicity Bureau at Stevens find one man for a paper ?

STUTS stands ready to help foster the project. Won't every man with a question, or criticism, or offer of work communicate with this paper via the letter rack or speak to one of the editors ?

The Hoboken Concert.

On March 31st the Musical Clubs will give their ' Hoboken Concert " in the Institute Auditorium. After the concert there will be informal dancing in the Carnegie Laboratory, for which Muller will furnish the dance music, and everybody knows what that means.

Every arrangement has been made to make the whole affair a very enjoyable one. Come and see for yourself.

We want you in it and frankly I don't believe you will ever regret a minute of the time you spent at it. It's fun if you make it so. The cheer leaders will do all in their power to guarantee you a good time if you, in turn, will get into the spirit of the thing.

The first Song and Cheer Rehearsal is called to-day at 12-45 in the Auditorium. We're having it there even though the weather may (or may not) be fair, because we need the piano for the songs. So get in anyway. Get in on time and back the work from the start by your little contribution of "toasted atmosphere." New songs and old ones.

Newark Alumni.

The second meeting of the Newark Alumni took place on March 10. With Prof. Kroeh as Chairman pro-fern, the recommendations of the organization committee were discussed at some length. I t was decided to call the organization the "Stevens Club of Newark." Its object, briefly stated, is to aid its nlenlbers intellectually, socially and in their business relations, and to endeavor to sustain interest in their Alumni Association and in their Alma Mater.

Membership is not to be restricted to residents of Newark, as the name of the club might indicate. That city is merely regarded as a convenient meeting place for the Alumni residing in, the many small towns of Essex and adjacent counties. No sooner had the amount of dues been fixed than there resulted considerable rivalry as to who should have the honor of paying first, a fair indication of the enthusiasm displayed. Having outlined the scheme of organization the election of officers was taken up.

Mr. Frederick Fraentzel '83 was unanimously elected President, Mr. E. R. Douglass '93 was chosen Vic-President, and A. P . 1 Hagar '02, Secretary. Owing to lack of time and probably to speculations regarding the merits of a lunch to be enjoyed later in the evening, no committees were appointed. The meet- I ing, on the whole, was a success and was enjoyed by all. I t demonstrated the good effects of the spirit of " togetherness. ' ' At the next meeting Mr. Douglass will open a discussion of Motor Driven Tools " by presenting a paper on that subject.

Mr. Douglass is thoroughly familiar with the subject and well able to impart valuable information. t I

Lacrosse Notes.

On Saturday, March 11, the joint convention of the InterCollegiate and Inter-University Lacrosse Leagues was held at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New Yo&.

I t has long been desired to have a consolidation of the two leagues so that some uniformity of playing rules might be adopted. With this end in view, the convention was held, delegates being present from Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Swarthmore, Lehigh, Stevens; the first four colleges conlposing the Inter-University and the last four the Inter-Collegiate League.

The new league will be called the United States InterCollegiate Lacrosse League and will consist of the eight colleges mentioned.

It is evident that it is not a practical thing to form an eight team schedule and therefore the league was divided into two sections-northern and southern, the Inter-University forming the northern, and the Inter-Collegiate the southern section. It was suggested to have the winners of the two sections play together for the league championship, but this was not carried through and the matter is still undecided.

Nothing was accomplished in regard to changing the period . of play from two to four periods. cc The decision on the goal crease rule is as follows :- No attacking player shall be allowed within the crease unless the ball is within it, nor allowed to check the goal keeper unless the goal keeper is in possession of the ball. " The question of substituting new players during the game was left undecided.

The consolidation is a grand thing for the advancement of lacrosse, and ought to place lacrosse on a level with the other big sports in a short time. ,

Indoor winter practice has been carried on with great spirit.

This was made possible by securing part of one of the North w a n Lloyd Piers for practice. Practice is held three times a week, the interest that the men take in the work gives fcod cause for us to expect a strong team to be in the field this season so be sure t< We need the help of the Alumni to run our g~~rnes, help us out. Remember that two of the three league games art to be played in Hoboken.

The Target Competition will be held to-morrow morning at Bverybody is eligible to compete. All contestants start from scratch and all those who make the minimum score of 40 (for conditions of the contest see last number of &UTE) will receive a solid silver medal watch fob. Stillman is about ready to leave the press, the Second Edition having been exhausted last summer.

During' the short vacation Prof. Pond was engaged at Harrisburg in testing the "Eldred. Process" of making producer gas.

The common practice in gas generators is to blow steam tiar~ugh the fire with the air. I n the "Eldred process" part of the blast furnace gas is blown through with the air, thus doing away with the a'ttxilliary boiler. The process is spoken of very highly, Samuel Slingerland, who is known by everybody as am," has been transferred from the machine shop to Prof. Ganz's laboratory. He will be custodian of all the apparatus and his duty as such will be to keep everything in first-class conditioo.

Tennis.

The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held on Wedneday afternoon, March 15th, at which the following officers were elected : I,. A. Hazeltine, President ; J. J. Burling, VicePresident; J. N. Killgore, Secretary, and A. R. Vescelius, Treasurer, all of the Junior class. A challenge from the Hackensack High School was declined. The motion to send a challenge to N. Y. U. was carried.

The attendance of over forty at the meeting and the large increase in membership insure a successful season for tennis.

Many of the fellows at the Institute play lacrosse and quite a number expect to devote themselves to base-ball. These, however, do not compose the entire college. There are many others who for one reason or another, play neither lacrosse nor baseball. Why not try tennis?

During the year there will be either an open tournament at which medals will be awarded, or an inter-class tournament with a banner for the winning class. Two courts at the Cricket Grounds are available now and it is hoped that some more courts can be built on the Castle Point Grounds.

Another meeting of the club will be held on Monday, March 27th, at which the question of tournaments, outside matches, and other important matters will be discussed and decided. Let every member be present.

Under the guidance of Prof. Pryor, the Sophomore Class ? will spend the second hour of Wednesdays in a discussion of engineering topics. A committee was selected from the class, and it is the duty of this committee to call on eight men each week for a short talk on something connected with engineering.

The men will be allowed to pick their own subjects and will be I I given a week in which to work up their topics. A discussion by I the class will follow each paper presented.

I t is thought that these talks will interest the men in endneering investigation, and besides they will glean a lot of useful knowledge.

This training will no doubt prove of value to those members of the class who will join the "Engineering Society" next fall* as it will give them an insight into the work ahead, and will stimulate their interest.

Base-Ball.

The base-ball question is one which has greatly agitated the student body for some little time. It naturally came to the ears of the Faculty Advisory Board of the Athletic Association, and as a result a conference was held at which were present the above mentioned board composed of President Humphreys, Dr. Sevenoak and Dr. Pond, representatives of the Athletic Association and representatives of the Base-ball promoters. At this conference the question was thoroughly discussed and resulted in the agreement which is printed herewith : The Sievms Institute of Technology.

HOBOKEN, N. J., March 6 , 1905.

At a conference held this day in the President's o f f i c e present : President Humphreys, the Faculty Committee on Athletics (Dr. Sevenoak and Dr. Pond), the Executive Committee of the Athletic Association, represented by Erlenkotter, Cornstock, Norris, Pratt, Bedell and Hegeman ; and Davis, Captain of the Lacrosse Team ; and the following representing baseball interests : Beckman, Gaffney, Henes and Cowenhoven-it having developed during the discussion that the base-ball representatives were able to insure an addition to the membership of the Association to the estimated number of one hundred, contingent upon the satisfactory recognition of base-ball, and it having been stated by the President of the Athletic Association that this canvass had been conducted in a manner satisfactory to him, thc following points were agreed upon : 1.-That the base-ball team is to play on the field with some insignia, such as '' Stevens Base-ball Club, " but such insignia is not to be worn anywhere except on the diamond.

2.-That of the extra subscriptions canvassed by the base-ball men, plus President Humphrey's additional subscription and Dr. Sevenoak's subscription, fifty per cent. is to go to the base-ball club and the rest to the Athletic Association.

3.-If the showing of the base-ball club during the season of 1905 is considered good by President Humphreys and the Faculty Athletic Advisers, base-ball shall be recognized as a varsity sport by the Athletic Association and a revision of the Constitution shall be made on points touching the same.

4.-Base-ball not to be recognized in any way whatsoever during the season of 1905 except as mentioned above.

5.-The practice of the base-ball club to be at the " 'Castle Point " grounds. The practice of the Lacrosse team to be at the St. George Cricket Grounds. The games of the baseball club to be played only on such Wednesdays and Saturdays as the lacrosse team is away or not using the grounds, and the Wednesdays that the base-ball club is using the Cricket Grounds the Lacrosse team to be allowed to practice on the Castle Point " grounds.

On Wednesday afternoon, March 8th, the student body, under the auspices of the Engineering Society, listened to a -'father interesting lecture on The Principles and Design of the ' D e Lava1 Steam Turbine. Athletic Association Meeting.

A meeting of the S. I. T.Athletic Association was held at on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 21, in the lecture 4 Room of the Carnegie Laboratory. President Hegeman presided.

The thing is important when it's looked at from the right point of view. " Education ' ' comes from a latin word meaning to draw from." Did you come here for education; if so, you came to have "drawn from youH-developed within you-those things which make for personality. Personality-one might hesitate to define it, b u t - o f just one thing I am sure, personality is a something which comes to a man as a result of effort-his best effort; comes as a result of thought and action and it makes the difference between success and failure. Evolved from primeval deeds and thoughts of the primitive man, our ideals to-day stand preeminently superior. The evolution has been one of personality -the evolution of individuality resulting from effort.

A little dry? A bit philosophical? Yes; but after all the thought is this: Get out of life, wherever you may be, the whole of what there is in it for you. Get out of a college career what you came to get. Get education" in its broadest sense; that's the sense which makes a better man of you.

This and That.

A PANCINOTTI DYNAMO.* One of the interesting exhibits contained in our library is a model of one of the earliest forms of dynamo-machines, the Pacinotti Dynamo. I t is about 8 in. high and 1 2 in. long, consisting mainly of an armature on a vertical shaft and two upright field-magnets, surmounted by pole-pieces. This armature consists of an iron-ring upon which are wound the armature coils, the latter being separated by wooden wedges. Two brass rollers act as brushes and curiously enough, were placed 90' from their proper positions.

Subsequently the same type of armature was discovered by Gramme and has been called after him the Gramme RingJ'
