Looking Backwards.

T is always interesting to recall those events of the past which

bear on the present. F o r this reason we think it will be profitable to review t h e first number of The Stevens Indicator, which made its appearance as a n undergraduate monthly just twenty-four years ago.

T h e first board of editors met with many of the same difficulties that beset the originators of THE STUTE. As there was no unoccupied space in the college building available a s an editorial sanctum, the boarding houses of Hoboken were searched for a suitable room, and, that proving unsuccessful, one of the professors gave u p a portion of his office to the uses of the board.

T h e pages of this first editorial effort reflect a year of great student activity, especially in athletics. T h e close of the football season of '83 saw Michigan defeated by Stevens and Pennsylvania tied. We quote from an article regarding the season : 1' When it is taken into consideration that our total number is about one hundred and fifty, and that the team must be chosen from this small number, the record of the games won is something t o be proud of. W.e think that if the chosen men could have some place for indoor exercise on stormy days, the pleasing record of this season's work could be repeated next fall ; even although we lose four or five very good men next June."

How strange that this paper 24 years ago should con~plain in the following terms because two professors remainedin the room during a senior examination, and in substance should suggest what is, in effect, the honor system of to-day : "1t would appear, then, that Prof. Wood feared the class would use unfair means, and endeavor to cheat, and thought i t necessary to have a spy on hand t o detect any attempt to 'crib'. This might do for Freshmen or 'Preps', but, when one becomes a Senior, he is expected to have some respect for his professor, for himself, and

for his class. * * * * * I n order to make' perfect this system of preventing unfair help on examinations, there would have to be a deputy professor for each student, who shall keep close guard upon him, and watch his every movement, as a cat does a mouse. If this be so, why not try another plan, one which is at least practical, and which is honorable, and more in standing with a Senior Class; that is, rely on their rnanli. ness."

Ic The Library of to-day with its maximum efficiency" is strongly in contrast- with these caustic remarks : "In 'indicating' the library, it was found to give a very poor card, due almost entirely to its poor management, bad setting, and son. r&gulation. I t seems to 'cut-off' before the beginning of the stroke, indeed if it even makes a stroke.

"The back pressure in the form of a noisy location, want of a catalogue, and the number of books indefinitely i n professional hands, is very nearly equal to the effective pressure, thereby reducing the efficiency to a minimum. As it is impossible to make such a machine as a college library automatic, it should have good care and attendance. The engineer should be on hand at all times, and should be alive to his [or her] duties. * * * I t is feared the College Library will not bear comparison in any respect to the well managed private collections of any of the professors. " Several salient sentences under the heading 'Shall the Reputation of Stevens Increase or Diminish ? " bring to light some interesting bits of ancient history: "With the greatest sorrow, we notice in the addenda to the last catalogue this statement: The entering or freshmen class of next year will be limited to fifty students, who will be selected by the faculty after examinao n , from the entire number of applicants, on the ground of superior fitness and promise of development.' * * * * There is nothing incompatible whatever in having large numbers, and, at the same time, the very best quality and the highest requirements. Why is it necessary to cripple the growing influence of our Institution, which is clearly manifested by the appearance of large numbers of freshmen? The raising of the requirements was also intended to effect a reduction in numbers, but to the contrary it is always seen to effect an increase.

11 But 'where can these multitudes of new students, which ' The Institute is YOU advise, be p u t ? ' some one suggests. now filled to its utmost capacity.' * * * * 'where are the recitation rooms for these large classes, as they certainly will have to be divided, and there is not now room ? ' As we look at things we think there is, but it is occupied for purposes in no way connected with the college good. We refer to the High School, which occupies one entire wing of the building. The managers of this affair have recognized that it would be Poor policy to limit their classes to fifty, and to have requirements for admission, and consequently they have reaped a harvest of enorm-

ibers, which threatens to engulf the whole college. T h e i a v e turned out our respected janitor from his cozy andcomfortable quarters, and now they have encroached to the very heart of the Institute's domains. Preps' have the right to the occupancy of the lecture rooms of physics, languages, etc., and their childish needs are ministered to by the college professors ; they have also asserted the right of the entire campus, so that now it is almost impossible for the college students to use it a t all. ''What is all this leading t o ? I n a few years when the present students return as alumni, they will behold mere children, the 'Preps', enjoying all the advantages and doing all the honors af the institution ; they will then individually retire to the 'Elysian Fields' and straightway commit suicide from shame and mortification at having entrusted their education to such a dege erate Alma Mater.

Surely it is not the duty of a reputable college to furnis preparatory education. If the school desires to continue, there s certainly to be found in Hoboken some other building suitable for the purpose, but whether there is or not THE PREPS MUST GO. it

Where then is the money coming from to obtain these?' [i. e . more instructors and more roon~] 'Ask and ye shall receive.' Once make the need known throughout the country, in the scientific and technical press; beg hard, and something is bound to be received, for there is certainly as much wealth in the engineering profession as in any other of equal size, and there i s no reason why Stevens cannot draw it out as well as any other college. During the last summer the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by this means obtained a n endowment for a very large amount. W h y Stevens has not received donations before, has been due to the prevailing idea that it was so magnificently endowed as to go on forever, constantly living much within its income. Why not also apply to the State legislature for an appropriation? Other colleges of not half the importance of this one have done it, and as a result have secured large sums."

I n these days of large classes it is hard for the faculty at large to get very close to the individual student, and the appointing of class officersDeans. especially such men as now hold the positionsshould help considerably.

Consult your Dean frequently and often-he can't charge you "so much per." We believe this to be but a step in the organization of a new system )f government at Stevens, and-seriously-it deserves the cooperation of every student.

Of course all juniors will be glad to see in the Calendar the date o f t h e much anticipated " ~ r o m ". We regret Junior however, that this date has been so chosen as to Prom. coincide with senior inspection trips, and think it a trifle strange that such an arrangement should have been made.

Mr. T. B. Kirk, who was formerly lacrossecoach at Stev for about five years, died December 27, 1907. H e was buried from his home at Madoc, Out., Canada, on January 6.

T h e Fairbanks Co. have donated half the cost of a $165 cement testing machine .of 1,000 Ibs. capacity, and the balance be paid partly by four seniors who will use the machine in connection with their thesis and partly by the Institute.

Bills have been introduced into Congress for the return of the $45,000 collateral inheritance tax on the original Stevens bequest. I n this connection Pres. Humphreys has urged every member of the Alumni Association to do every thing in his power to further the passage of these bills, and it is hoped that by this concerted action on the part of the Alumni and Faculty that the hills will meet with favor.

On Wednesday, January 8, Dr. Pond supplenlented the work of the sophomores in Gas Manufacture by an instructive and well illustrated lecture on that subject. A short sketch of the history of gas manufacture was followed by a lucid explanation of the different methods now in vogue. Dr. Pond paid particular attention to the manufacture of water gas, and the different schemes for using all waste heat.

The following Saturday the sophomores, accompanied by Dr. Pond visited the gas plant of the Public Service Corporation in Newark. Here the complete process was shown and explained to the men, thereby giving them a much clearer conception of the manufacture than they had previously held. The trip was of much value to all who went, and the whole class is indebted to Dr. Pond for his efforts to give us a con~prehensivegrasp upon the subject.

n Tuesday evening, January 14, the chess club played at" the rooms of the Hoboken Chess and Checkers Club, the games resulting as follows : Jappe '09 won from Ditmar, Hoexter '09 lost to Clausen, and Skinner '11 lost to Girr. The Hoboken Club meets every Tuesday and Stevens men are always welcome either to play or to receive instruction in the game from the more experienced players. A game is being arranged to be played by one Hoboken man against five Stevens men simultaneously.

Prep. Notes.

The Senior Class has ordered its class pins from Dieges & Clust. The pin is of a plain design and very attractive.

The Senior dance will be held on Monday, February 17, in the Carnegie Laboratory of the Institute.

Mr. Scratchly, Professor of Senior Class A, has been confined to his home on account of illness and Mr. Stone, formerly a professor in the school, acted as substitute.

The School in the begining of the winter looked forward to having a hockey team but as there has been no ice, oar ambitions have been destroyed. Probably the other teams in the league feel the same way about it.
