This is dedicated to you—for your commitment to developing the next generation of global leaders with the Study Abroad Foundation

WELCOME TO SAF

They say every great adventure begins with a single step.

As someone who studied abroad, I speak from experience: study abroad changed my life. It changed my wife’s life, and both our daughters’ lives. The study abroad experience opens countless opportunities to engage with the world, to learn from the world, and to see the world anew.

Study abroad IS A SUPERPOWER.

In 2025, we celebrate 75 years of changing lives through study abroad; more than 170,000 students’ lives, to be exact. We were founded in 1950 by college students setting out to broaden their perspectives and make the world a more peaceful place. While we have evolved over the decades, our mission and values have stayed grounded in providing transformative global learning experiences that allow students to become global citizens.

Onwards,

SHAPED IN SCHOLARLY TRADITION

Created over 20 years ago in the scholarly traditions of our preeminent university partners, SAF mentors students seeking the most professional, personalized, and prestigious study abroad opportunities in the world.

STUDYING WITH SAF

We partner with universities around the world to secure study abroad opportunities during semester, year-long, and vacation sessions. This means you have the opportunity to study overseas with flexible entry dates year-round, secure credit at your home university, and remain on-track to graduate on time. Using our programs, you can truly tailor your degree studies to suit your specific international career goals, enhance your employability and graduate admission opportunities.

SAF facilitates student mobility between our invitation-only university membership network. We provide you with access to the best universities across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, and Asia.

The Study Abroad Foundation ® (SAF) is a part of IES Global, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Chicago in the United States. SAF operates offices in China, Japan, and Korea. IES Global educates students to become global leaders through premier study abroad and internship programs, which offer students worldwide experiential learning opportunities that set the highest standards of academic quality.

COMPANY HISTORY

The Study Abroad Foundation, also known as SAF, originated in 2000 when a group of international educators came together to open the world of study abroad to students from Asia.

Established as a U.S. non-profit organization with an independent board of directors, the Study Abroad Foundation has held at its core a vision to provide high-quality study abroad opportunities and personal support for university students. These efforts have taken us across the globe, with students from Brunei, China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan benefiting from the experiences we develop.

The Study Abroad Foundation earned a reputation for excellence amongst universities in the United States, leading to partnership development, throughout the 2000s, in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Our ambitions to provide world-class international opportunities prompted in 2017 the Study Abroad Foundation’s merger with the leading study abroad provider in the United States, IES Abroad, ushering in a new era of pioneering and innovation.

Today, we lead the field of study abroad.

SAF & IES GLOBAL TOGETHER

The Study Abroad Foundation specializes in educational services, including the administration of study abroad programs, academic advising and assistance in choosing programs, assisting with arrangements for participation, and facilitating transcripts of overseas academic program credits.

■ In merging with SAF in 2017, IES Global identified a number of synergies between the organizations:

■ Two similarly mission-driven organizations focused on high quality academic and internship programming, and thoughtful preparation of our students for intercultural experiences.

For nearly 75 years, IES Global has been offering life-changing study abroad and internship experiences for college-aged students from around the globe. As a long-trusted and respected not-for-profit organization, our expertise has been forged through decades of commitment to education, inclusivity, and health & safety, and support. IES Global is comprised of a global collective of brands including IES Abroad, IES Internships, Customized & Faculty-Led Programs, and the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF). With more than 250 programs and more than 500 college and university partners around the world, IES Global champions meaningful academic and cultural education; represents and integrates a variety of perspectives, cultures, and ideas; prioritizes the health and safety of our students; and strives to better the world through our Global Good Commitment.

EXPAND ACCESS TO GLOBAL EDUCATION

In a rapidly changing globalized world, the demand for high quality international education continues to grow. As a leading study abroad program provider, IES Global offers universities the opportunity to access a broad range of diverse programs through a single partner.

SCALABILITY AND DIVERSITY

Partnering with IES Global allows universities to rapidly scale their international programs. With our extensive network and resources, institutions can offer a wider variety of destinations and study options to their students. This variety not only enriches the student experience but also enhances the institution’s appeal to a broader student base.

QUALITY AND EXPERTISE

Our decades of experience in global education ensure that every program meets the highest standards of academic quality and safety. With fully staffed teams located around the globe, we bring expertise in logistics, program development, advising, and student support, allowing universities to focus on their core academic mission while we handle the complexities of study abroad programming.

CUSTOMIZED PROGRAMS

IES Global stands out in its ability to offer customized solutions that align with the unique goals and curriculum of each partner institution. From faculty-led programs to specialized internships, our offerings are designed to integrate seamlessly with your academic framework, providing added value to your existing curriculum.

GLOBAL NETWORK AND SUPPORT

Our global network is your asset. Partnering with IES Global means access to a vast array of international connections, including universities, organizations, communities, and internships partners, as well as our local on-the-ground Centers in more than 30 locations. IES Global Centers, each managed by a team of our dedicated staff, serve as hubs for students, faculty, and school partners alike, as well as a convergence for our local networks.

These networks are supported by our teams and staff located around the world, creating a safe, enriching, and authentic experience for every student. By choosing IES Global as your third-party study abroad provider, your institution gains a partner committed to expanding global education horizons. Together, we can create dynamic, diverse, and academically rich programs that prepare students for a global future.

IES GLOBAL STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

IES Global is comprised of four brands representing different types of programming and academic offerings around the world.

The Study Abroad Foundation (SAF) provides high-quality global experiences that align with the study abroad needs of students and universities outside the United States. SAF programs are offered across approximately 60 host colleges and universities in Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States, and give students the option to pursue traditional academic or language studies and/or complete an internship.

On an IES Abroad program, students can enroll in courses at one of our Centers abroad where they will take classes alongside students from all over world. Students also have the option to enroll in courses at a local university abroad, or personalize their academic schedule with courses at both. Our study abroad programs take learning outside of the classroom with optional internships, community-based learning placements, and course-related field trips.

Customized & Faculty-Led Programs works with college/university staff and faculty to build study abroad programs unique to that school. Students on a Customized Program get a hands-on learning experience while also fulfilling school-specific requirements. From large components such as location to the details of on-site orientation, Customized & Faculty-Led Programs and university staff/faculty turn your study abroad ideas into a reality.

IES Internships offers full-time summer and semester internships, both on-site and remotely. Alongside a guaranteed work placement, students will enroll in a for-credit internship seminar and optional foreign language course, where applicable. With locations around the world, students can gain the professional and cultural experience they need to get ahead while embarking on the adventure of a lifetime.

WHAT IS AN IES GLOBAL CENTER?

The majority of programming for IES Abroad, IES Internships, and Customized & Faculty-Led Programs are supported by IES Global Centers.

OUR GLOBAL CENTERS:

Are hubs of academic activity and community engagement with a network of local universities, leading academics and practitioners, and businesses and cultural institutions. Offer continuous learning opportunities through local staff and resources on the ground in each location.

Have physical teaching facilities, as well as spaces for students and faculty to gather. Are situated near public transit and easily accessible from partner universities, student housing, and experiential learning placements. Maintain connections to local healthcare providers and authorities, carefully vetted student housing placements, cultural and educational institutions, internship hosts, and more.

WHY DO INSTITUTIONS USE THIRD-PARTY PROVIDER AND CENTER-BASED PROGRAMMING TO SUPPORT THEIR STUDY ABROAD AND INTERNATIONALIZATION EFFORTS?

Our Center-based programming is one component of a range of study abroad programs that universities offer their students. Center-based programming plays an important role in helping institutions effectively scale the number of students that study abroad. Exchange programs inherently limit the number of students that can enroll in a given location; university-run programs abroad are important for institutional identity, but they do not give students access to a diverse range of locations. Many direct enrollment programs do not offer the range or depth of student health, academic, and day-to-day support demanded by today’s students. IES Global Centers are a solution to these limitations that allow institutions to scale the number of students that study abroad and are supported by a reliable partner.
