Generally for partial credit
Students with any level of language proficiency can study abroad. SAF partners exclusively with university campus language centers to offer language courses designed to improve proficiency.
Generally non-credit
Students aspiring toward a for-credit study abroad program who don’t yet meet language requirements can take a language pathway program before progressing to for-credit study in the following semester.
Generally non-credit, leading into a full credit semester
Enroll in a summer session at an SAF partner university. Tailored specifically for international students, summer programs often include pre-arranged extra-curricular activities.
Generally for full credit
Working in partnership with host university faculty, our students enjoy participation in a dedicated research effort during the academic session.
Generally for full credit
Working with a limited number of quality partners, SAF facilitates professional internship placements to enable students to apply their learning in the real world.
Generally for full credit
SAF facilitates student groups across IES Abroad locations and our university consortium for customized, faculty-led programs.
Generally non-credit
Working between your home and host universities, SAF works with you to enroll in undergraduate or graduate courses at your best-fit overseas program where you are assessed on the same basis as degree-seeking students.
With hundreds of Academic programs available, academically-minded students may enroll in a program best suited to their area of specialization or major.
Take a seat in the same tutorials, lectures, seminars, and webinars as local students, as you would at your home university. Earn credit back to your degree, with your home university’s approval.
Academic Programs are designed for students with a history of coursework completion at their home university and evidence of proficiency in the language of instruction of their host university.
Requirements
Enroll in a standard full-time coursework study load at your new host university for a single semester, quarter, or term, or extend with a longer enrollment period.
Join classes and lectures that work towards your major or your future discipline, enhance your understanding and enthusiasm, and give you a global perspective on your subject.
Students shy of normal language requirements for direct access to an Academic Program have options with a hybrid language and academic course enrollment through Concurrent Programs. Generally, these programs allow students to study a reduced credit load while also studying to improve their language proficiency through parallel enrollment at the university and language center.
While in your university courses, enjoy classes with local students as you would at your home university. While in your language units, you’ll meet new international friends from all over the world.
Take a parallel enrollment with a partial coursework study load and a partial language center study load. Earn partial credit towards your degree back home and improve your language proficiency.
Enjoy study abroad for just a single semester, quarter, or summer, or extend your time abroad by progressing from a Concurrent Program to an Academic Program the following term if you achieve the progression scores required.
Focused, activity-rich classes develop your language skills, elevating them to a confident academic level. And, in the same semester, you attend academic courses to further your understanding of your chosen major or discipline.
Students with any level of language proficiency can study abroad. SAF partners exclusively with university campus language centers to offer language courses designed to improve proficiency. Regardless of your current level of proficiency, you can improve through a full overseas immersion experience.
Most of our standalone language programs offer classes suitable for students at all levels - from Beginner to Advanced proficiency. At most centers, your language proficiency will be assessed through a placement test on your first day.
Most host university language centers do not grant credit for language training classes, meaning your prior academic experience is not assessed as part of the application process. However, your home university may still grant credits for your studies in language classes abroad - so check with SAF and your home university.
Most SAF Language programs include accommodation with a local homestay family, giving you the full immersion experience. Practice your newfound language skills in class and at home, while getting to know how it feels to really live like a local.
Enroll in for a single semester, quarter, or term, or extend with a multi-term enrollment and study for several terms for as long as it takes to achieve your language goals.
Students aspiring toward a for-credit study abroad program who don’t yet meet language requirements can take a language pathway program with SAF. Language Pathway programs are generally for one term of enrollment, and candidates will need to demonstrate their current level of proficiency and prior academic achievement before commencement. Students will need to achieve a minimum final score to advance to an Academic program in their second term.
If your existing language proficiency is very close to the level required for admission into the Academic program, and your GPA is also satisfactory, you can study this program for one term and progress to a second term Academic program if you achieve satisfactory progression.
Most SAF Language programs include accommodation with a local homestay family, giving you the full immersion experience. Practice your newfound language skills in class and at home, while getting to know how it feels to really live like a local.
Admission into a Language Pathway program requires evidence of sound academic achievement. Your GPA will be taken into consideration for admission into your second-term program.
Enrolling in a Language Pathway Program means you have a plan to progress to a second term of enrollment. You will receive an offer to study which requires you to meet minimum progression milestones throughout your study abroad program.
Enroll in a summer session at an SAF partner university. Tailored specifically for visiting students, summer programs generally run during June to August each year and often include a whole lot of extra-curricular activities.
Aside from being a fun way to spend your summer, studying extra credits over your regular vacation can put you ahead of your study plans. Earning extra credits may help your graduate earlier, or study additional courses you find interesting.
Summer study abroad programs cater to students from all over the world, and have the flexibility to focus on different topics that aren’t constrained to academic year modules.
Studying abroad in summer can take many different forms. Perhaps you enroll in the popular for-credit Academic option, or you use your time to study a Language Pathway program so you can progress into an Academic program in fall. The choice is yours!
By studying abroad in summer, you get the experience and you stay on top of studies in your home university. You can choose between long and short summer sessions from May to September, tailoring your program to your needs.
Working in partnership with host university faculty, participate in a dedicated research effort during an academic term. Generally, there is very limited availability in Research programs, and prospective applicants may need to be pre-assessed by the university prior to enrolling with SAF.
Research programs are renowned for their academic rigour. Applicants will generally need to have completed a minimum of four semesters, or two yeras, of undergraduate study within the designated specialization, and have intention to pursue a Masters or Ph.D.
Over 50% of Research program alumni have successfully gained admission into top 50 graduate programs in the United States.
Work in very small groups, or even oneon-one, with some of the world’s best faculty researchers, and gain valuable insights and referees for further graduate study.
Join world-class, industry-changing researchers at prestigious institutions. You dive deep into a project that focuses on a specific topic that could further humanity and will certainly further your understanding and appreciation of your discipline.
Working with a limited number of quality partners, SAF facilitates professional internship placements to enable students to apply their learning in the real world. Internships are a fantastic way to gain real-world experience in an overseas workplace. Get a Foot in the Door
Discover the ins and outs of your future career industry. Interning abroad helps you develop valuable job skills crucial to hireability, such as language proficiency, cultural understanding, tolerance for ambiguity, adaptability, and self-confidence.
There are many paths to working abroad, but an internship abroad creates a natural opportunity for you to go back in the future. Why not lay the groundwork for an international career now while you can earn credit and benefit from the support SAF offers throughout the process?
Your internship gives you hands-on professional work experience in an international arena, and it sets your career on an impressive trajectory that stands out.
Interning abroad enhances your resume by showcasing global awareness, language skills, and cultural competency, making you a standout candidate in a diverse job market.
Whatever your level of language proficiency, you can join a study tour to expand your global perspective by studying and traveling abroad. This unique learning experience combines classroom instruction with real-world experiences, such as visits to local businesses and cultural sites, sometimes travelling between cities for an immersive exploration of the study-tour theme.

Hundreds of years since its founding, the University of Oregon (UO) remains the largest in the state of Oregon, but its classes remain small, with a 17:1 student-teacher ratio. In this way, you may enjoy the perks of a large American campus (sporting events, social clubs), while benefitting from personalized instruction that is characteristic of smaller universities. Eugene’s official slogan, “A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors”, describes the lifestyle you could live there. Recreational activities such as cycling, running, rafting and kayaking are among the most popular things to do in the city Eugene. Don’t miss the Oregon Festival of Music in August and the Asian Celebration in February (which highlights the history and cultures of the countries that make up the continent), and the weekly Saturday Market, where you may shop crafts, souvenirs and more.

Safe, friendly, and beautiful are three words full-time students often use when describing the University of Victoria (UVic). With a maximum of 18 students in each class, you can expect to experience the personalized and welcoming community firsthand. What’s more, nature abounds on this park-like campus. Outdoor activities are common—it’s no surprise, as the campus reflects the city around it. Victoria is considered one of the best cycling communities in Canada. Activities occur throughout the year, as the city has some of the mildest weather in Canada. By taking a quick 15-minute bus ride, you can enjoy all the amenities and charm of downtown Victoria. Better yet, take a leisurely 20-minute stroll from campus to reach the ocean, a wonderful park, and shops and cafes selling everything from local produce to coffee.

Dating back to 1879, St. Anne’s College at the University of Oxford is part of one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the English-speaking world. Since its inception in 1096, Oxford has educated 28 British prime ministers, 55 Nobel Prize winners, and 120 Olympic medal winners. Sixty miles from London, Oxford is very much a student city with its 30-plus colleges creating a warm and welcoming environment to call home.
■ Sit down to grand formal meals from awardwinning chefs in your college dining hall
■ Join a welcoming community committed to learning and self-improvement
■ Follow Oxford’s unique tutorial system in 121 conversations with your personal tutor
■ A modern, forward-thinking college with an informal ethos but intense academic drive
The University of Oxford is the second oldest university in the world, an iconic congregation of colleges in the heart of vibrant Oxford, just 60 miles from London. With an intense reputation its exceptional standards of education and research, its 30-plus student colleges have a warm and welcoming environment to call home.
One of the first two women’s colleges at the University of Oxford, Lady Margaret Hall was founded in 1879 when just nine women – called bluestockings – gathered to study. They were not allowed to graduate, although they joined lectures and took examinations – it wasn’t until 1920 that women could matriculate and receive their degree.
In 1977, men first entered LMH as students and tutors. And, in 2016, LMH was the first Oxford College to welcome under-represented students on a foundation year. With its defining pioneer spirit, it has a welcoming, warm, academically rich community that leads where others follow.
The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge – known collectively as Oxbridge – are two of the best universities in the world. There is a fierce rivalry between them and has been since the 1209 when a number of Oxford scholars fled the town, some stories suggesting it was after a local woman died mysteriously and the locals hanged two scholars, without trial. The ex-Oxonians headed to Cambridge, about 100 miles away, to continue their studies. There, they established the first colleges that grew into the academic powerhouses we admire today.

Nothing evokes a sense of ancient history like Rome. The center of the Roman Empire for hundreds of years, Rome’s place in world history is fully cemented today, much like the iconic monuments that line its piazzas, like the Colosseum, the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. For thousands of years, Rome has been a major player in Europe’s development, including its role in WWII, and there’s much to be learned from the impressive influence of Italy’s storied capital throughout the ages. Today, Rome stands as one of the most recognizable and romantic cities in the world, with breathtaking art, mouthwatering cuisine, and the world’s smallest country Vatican City.

One of the oldest universities in western France, University Catholique de l’Ouest (UCO) lies at the heart of Angers, nestled between Paris and the Atlantic Ocean. As Angers abounds with waterways, museums and galleries, you’ll feel at home if you’re an outdoor or art enthusiast. You’ll study French at the UCO-CIDEF language center, recognized as one of the best by FLE Quality, the official French as a Foreign Language Quality label backed by the Ministry for Higher Education & Research, the Ministry of Culture & Communication, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. But your richest experience may well lie outside of the classroom. You’ll live with a French family, meet French students, and participate in program excursions that include local cultural events.

“I would like to encourage other students to take part in the program. The program will further enhance students’ interest towards biology, because students can isolate their own phages and do their own experiments to characterize its physical and chemical properties. Sttudy abroad provides students an opportunity to understand their culture in different perspectives as well as accept different perspectives from different cultures.” Former alumni

Choosing your study abroad experience is about more than just the course and school’s rank. Find a location that resonates best with your personality and purpose. The words below appear in descriptions of each school and help you identify the study aboard destination perfect for you. You’re
place.
You demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting your standardized English language test score that meets a minimum requirement. Acceptable standardized English language test scores include:
■ IELTS
■ TOEFL internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)
■ TOEFL paper-based test (TEOFL pBT)
■ Other university-defined tests, such as DET and iTEP
* iTEP equivalencies to Internet-based TOEFL sourced from http://www.itepexam.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/2-iTEP-Academic-EquivalencyChart-08NOV16.pdf
** DET (Duolingo English Test) equivalencies to IELTS sourced from https://englishtest.duolingo.com/scores
Minimum English language test score requirements and equivalences provided by IES Abroad and are for reference only.
Widely popular and accepted worldwide, TOEFL iBT PBT stands out as both an internetbased test (iBT) and paperbased test (PBT) at a test center. The iBT, you can take from the comfort of home. Each version of TOEFL tests all four academic areas — reading, writing, speaking, and listening — readying you for success at any international university. Your scores are ready in a few days.
Twice every year, the national Chinese English Test, CET, assesses Chinese undergraduates’ and postgraduates’ proficiency in reading, writing, and listening. A spoken test is optional and only available to students with high scores in the other components. A good CET score is very important if you want to graduate or have a good job. CET 4 shows your English is good enough to do a bachelor’s degree; CET 6 shows a post-graduate level of English as a non-native speaker.
With a test score delivered typically within 48 hours, Pearson is a popular, hasslefree way to show your language proficiency on your study abroad application. It’s a single, two-hour digital exam, graded by computer, that you take in a test center. There is no face-to-face examination with a person, and many distinguished institutions take Pearson results into consideration.
The International English Language Testing System grades on a scale of 1 (absolute beginner) to 9 (expert user) your English listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency. Created by a collaboration of global partners, the test is assessed by real people and not a computer. An IELTS score is required by immigration authorities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK.
UKVI is specifically designed for United Kingdom visa and immigration purposes. As a student, you take a test that assesses reading, writing, speaking, and listening, using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to grade your proficiency. There are approved test centers both in and outside the UK, and, currently, you can only take the test at an approved center.
Testing English language proficiency, TOEIC focuses on everyday English most likely to be useful in an international workplace. There are two tests: TOEIC Listening & Reading, a multiple-choice paper of 200 items, and TOIEC Speaking & Writing, which you can take together or separately. Each test’s scores range from 0 to 200 and are used to allocate your proficiency level from 1 to 8 (speaking) and 1 to 9 (writing).
An affordable way to prove your English proficiency, Duolingo is an online test that takes an hour. You can take it at home and need no appointment. As part of the test, you record a speaking sample to share with institutions you’re applying to. With adaptive questions, it effectively evaluates your ability, and you receive your scores within 48 hours.
You can choose to take your International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP) at home or an accredited test center. It has a corresponding preparation course, and you can take the 90-minute test once every three days until you’re happy with your result. For an Academic-Plus iTEP, the assessment covers grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Program Specialists are your primary contact at SAF while you are on your program, and the main contact between SAF and your host university.
Student Counselors are ambassadors for the study abroad experience. Many of them have returned from their own international study and are keen to support the next cohort of scholars.
GEM (GEM stands for Global Enrollment Management) Specialists manage the admissions process at SAF. They review, process, and approve your applications. If you haven’t submitted the all the correct documents, you may hear from a GEM Specialist.
On standby for a crisis, the Crisis Management Team monitors global events, communicates with you or your family about potentially dangerous situations. They also support you with local response plans in the event of an emergency.
In some locations outside of the United States, there is an additional local SAF staff member, a Student Liaison Officer. They are available in an emergency to support or guide you personally when you’re unsure of protocols.
The Dean of Students is an SAF employee who works with students to address medical or disability concerns prior to their arrival, and to support on these issues during the program.
As a SAF Scholar, you travel with peace of mind, knowing you have constant support throughout your study abroad experience. SAF works alongside international partners to ensure you have a deeply successful once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Before you travel, we gather comprehensive emergency contact information, so you get the right assistance when you need it.
SAF is a committed team of advisors and specialists that guide you through your study abroad adventure, from beginning to end.
There are several stages you’ll go through: Thinking about studying abroad Applying Preparing to depart Your study abroad experience Returning 1 2 3 4 5
You like the idea of studying abroad, it’s never too early to start planning. So talk to a SAF Student Counselor for more information. SAF has a designated Student Counselor specifically for students like you. If you don’t know who your Student Counselor is, then visit the SAF website to connect with us today. We have some great hints, tips, and traveling stories we can send you to help you decide what you want to do and where—and just get you super excited about an incredible life-changing experience.
Our Student Counselors can answer as many questions as you have. Take time for a chat and indulge in some travel daydreams... daydreams that can come true.
Our Student Counselors help you on the first step on your amazing journey. They’re here to guide you through your application when you’re ready. The SAF application process will ask you to upload information about you, your qualifications, and the program you’d like to take.
When your SAF Application is ready and you’ve chosen your program and start date, a Program Specialist joins you on the next steps. Your Program Specialist checks you meet your chosen program’s language, academic, and GPA requirements.
You will receive an email with all your SAF Student Portal login information. The Student Portal has your application information and status, so you can watch your application as it moves through the process.
There is a handy Document Center with associated document deadlines for each stage of your study abroad experience (if you don’t meet the deadlines, you could lose your chance).
There are some important things you need to do by certain deadlines, including:
■ Read the Deposit and Refund Policies
■ Complete the required application forms
■ Pay the program deposit or the application fee, whichever is applicable to your application
■ Consider travel logistics: flights and visa applications
Next, our admissions team in the U.S. reviews and approves your documents on the Student Portal. They will contact you if there’s a mistake in the application or you need to send more information.
This is the big moment! When you’ve completed the documents that are required for your application, you get a message telling you your status in the Student Portal is now Application Complete.
Our admissions team has vetted your application and set you up for success! The team submits your application to your chosen university, and now you wait. Sometimes decisions arrive quickly and others take quite a while—this is a time for patience!
While you wait to hear about your acceptance, start thinking about your travel arrangements. Your Student Counselor can help with the details and offer you some ideas.
The SAF admissions team sends you an email about your acceptance as soon as we hear from your preferred host university.
Our admissions team uploads any documents you need, such as an acceptance letter, to the Student Portal. You have 10 days to accept your offer by submitting the Confirmation of Acceptance form. All other documents have their own deadlines. Most universities issue visa documents to accepted students—work with your Student Counselor at home for any visa questions or guidance.
Once you have confirmed your participation, you will start to hear from your Student Counselor. You start getting alerts, orientation details, and information about your tuition, housing, and insurance fees. Whenever SAF sends you an invoice for fees, you have 10 days to pay the balance due.
Your Program Specialist is arranging housing and arrival transportation. They are also monitoring emails from host universities to pass along pertinent details to students.
It’s really happening!
