25 Years of Student Success The Study Abroad Foundation (SAF) was established in 2000 as a not for profit educational institution certified by the state of Indiana, USA, and works to promote credit-accredited study abroad for university students from Asia, mainly Japan, China, and Korea. SAF continues to strive on the belief that by gaining international experience and knowledge through study abroad, students will acquire intercultural understanding and problem-solving skills, and be able to play an active role in their own countries and the international community in the future.

SAF Scholars Agree Past scholars attest to the practical value and life-changing experiences of studying with SAF.

From in-depth classroom discussions to extracurricular material reading and thinking, studying abroad has not only cultivated my academic and professional capabilities but also exercised my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Studying abroad has given me unlimited possibilities and valuable experiences.

The summer at Berkeley was a wonderful chapter in my life. Through the credit program, I experienced the daily life of Berkeley students, made friends from around the world, and received guidance from leading academic experts.

The true meaning of studying abroad becomes even clearer through the experience itself. And that experience doesn’t just impact a moment in your life — it becomes something valuable you can carry with you for the rest of your journey. As long as you approach it with a clear goal, nothing you do will be wasted.

At Victoria University, I feel that the classes mainly focus on output—using the expressions we’ve learned to have conversations with classmates—rather than just listening to the teacher talk the whole time. So instead of a quiet classroom, there’s usually a lively atmosphere, which makes the classes more enjoyable for me compared to those at my university in Japan!

Even if it feels awkward, even if you lack confidence, even if you’re naturally shy or introverted—what truly matters is having the mindset to try anyway. I believe that taking that one step, despite everything, builds up over time and gradually shapes your attitude, your personality, and ultimately, has the power to change your life. Every one of those moments made me stronger. And I believe they will continue to nourish me with warmth as I move forward in life.

I attended a strategic management (consulting) conference at UC Berkeley, and the conference offered a range of internship possibilities at top-tier consulting, investment banking, and private equity firms. Whether or not you can take advantage of this chance is entirely up to you, but it is obvious that if you study via SAF as a visiting student, you will have access to a wide range of opportunities.

Career Advancement

Today’s employers are looking for adaptable, capable problem solvers, who can work across cultures. These are the exact skills study abroad develops. Graduates who study abroad enter the workforce with the confidence and competitiveness employers look out for.

It goes beyond soft skills, paying off in concrete benefits too. Students who study abroad are known to report faster job offers, more interview callbacks, and even higher starting salaries. Of course, international experience can often open doors to new worlds and career directions too.

One SAF student, following completion of the IES Abroad Rome Study Tour on Italian Food Culture and Sustainability turned a casual interest into a job offer at a company applying AI to agriculture. In Milan, the Career Readiness Study Tour sends students home with a revised résumé, thorough interview experience, and a polished LinkedIn profile ready to impress potential employers.

Study abroad is the whole package From the in-class academics and cultural immersion gained from the program to the alumni networks that deliver recruitment tips, career advice, and valuable connections years later —those few weeks or months abroad really do stay with you for the rest of your life.

When the Unexpected Happens:

Case Study of SAF Response to Changed Flights During the Spring 2026 IES Abroad Dublin Study Tour on Communications & Culture, international affairs led to an unforeseen cancellation of the group’s original return flights. As a result, participating students ended up having to stay abroad longer than planned. Several teams of dedicated staff at the IES Abroad Dublin Center and SAF all worked together masterfully: communicating all updates with students, parents and staff; quickly booking the next available flights for everyone; and even planning additional activities to take advantage of the extra time.

“Connecting what I had learned in advance with the actual experience left a deep impression. Although it was unexpected, I think it resulted in a very fulfilling time.”

Concurrent Programs

Students shy of normal language requirements for direct access to an Academic Program have options with a hybrid language and academic course enrollment through Concurrent Programs. Generally, these programs allow students to study a reduced credit load while also studying to improve their language proficiency through parallel enrollment at the university and language center.

Coursework With Locals & Language Classes With Visiting Students

Single Term or Multi-Term Enrollment Enjoy study abroad for just a single semester, quarter, or summer, or extend your time abroad by progressing from a Concurrent Program to an Academic Program the following term if you achieve the progression scores required.

While in your university courses, enjoy classes with local students as you would at your home university. While in your language units, you’ll meet new international friends from all over the world.

Sound Academic Requirement, Lower Language Requirement

Best of Both Worlds

Focused, activity-rich classes develop your language skills, elevating them to a confident academic level. And, in the same semester, you attend academic courses to further your understanding of your chosen major or discipline.

Take a parallel enrollment with a partial coursework study load and a partial language center study load. Earn partial credit towards your degree back home and improve your language proficiency.

Language Standalone Programs

Students with any level of language proficiency can study abroad. SAF partners exclusively with university campus language centers to offer language courses designed to improve proficiency. Regardless of your current level of proficiency, you can improve through a full overseas immersion experience.

For Beginner + Language Learners

Homestay Housing Included

Most of our standalone language programs offer classes suitable for students at all levels - from Beginner to Advanced proficiency. At most centers, your language proficiency will be assessed through a placement test on your first day.

Most SAF Language programs include accommodation with a local homestay family, giving you the full immersion experience. Practice your newfound language skills in class and at home, while getting to know how it feels to really live like a local.

Not Academically Assessed

Single or Multi-Term Enrollment

Most host university language centers do not grant credit for language training classes, meaning your prior academic experience is not assessed as part of the application process. However, your home university may still grant credits for your studies in language classes abroad - so check with SAF and your home university.

Enroll in for a single semester, quarter, or term, or extend with a multi-term enrollment and study for several terms for as long as it takes to achieve your language goals.

Students will need to achieve a minimum final score to advance to an Academic program in their second term.

For Intermediate + Language Learners

Internship Programs

Internships are temporary, real-world positions in businesses around the globe. While internships deliver practical experience, training, and skill development in your field, interning abroad develops language proficiency, cultural understanding, adaptability, and self-confidence—all valuable job skills crucial to your career success.

Gain industry experience

Summer or semester internships

An internship gives you a clear understanding of your industry and the work you can expect to do in your career. The practical experience and industry-specific skills you gain give you a competitive advantage as you grow your career—and your mentors and coworkers are the beginning of your professional network that could build your future.

Internship programs fit your timeline. Choose a full-time semester internship in London or Barcelona or fit a short summer internship around your academic schedule. Flexible options give you meaningful international work experience to suit your own career and study plans.

Develop global skills

Direct career impact

Interning abroad develops more than job-specific skills. As well as seeing how to apply classroom learning to the real world, you build language proficiency, cultural understanding, self-confidence, and tools to manage ambiguity. These are all valuable soft skills that set you apart with employers in a competitive global job market.

While academic programs offer cultural immersion and credits, internships have a more direct impact on your career. The practical work experience, professional connections, and industry insights you gain put you ahead of the game in your field.

Two- to three-week programs

Study tours unpack the most important aspects of your subject by taking you to the places that matter to your discipline. In authentic locations, with subject experts, you enhance your academic development and increase your enthusiasm for your subject.

Usually scheduled during semester breaks and vacation periods, study tours take you deep into your disciple in a very short period. Bringing classroom learning to life in an action-packed couple of weeks, study tours are transformative academic experiences.

Learning fits your schedule

Destinations around the world

Maybe you have a packed academic calendar or only a few weeks available for additional subject immersion. On a study, tour you enjoy an intensive, meaningful academic international experience without the commitment of a full semester abroad.

Choose a study tour in London for arts, fashion, artificial intelligence, and international medicine. Go to Italy for food culture and sustainability, or Spain for sustainable urban planning. Housing Options Finding your home away from home is part of the study abroad experience. Your SAF program includes accommodation for the duration of your enrollment abroad. Each program and each university differs in the accommodation included, so here’s a breakdown of the types of study abroad housing options you can expect. Housing availability is subject to change for all SAF Programs

Dormitory

Private apartment

Where?

Where?

On campus

Off campus

Perfect for the typical Western university experience, dormitories are on-campus buildings specifically for students of the university to live in.

Usually near or easy to get to from the university, private apartments are shared by students, usually from the same university. Some apartments are in the same building as non-student residents.

■ Most rooms are for 2 to 3 people. Some dorms have more-expensive single rooms

■ Dorms differ. Some have in-room bath and toilet, others have single-gender showers and toilets shared by all students living on a floor

■ To eat, you pay for a meal plan provided by the

university’s buffet cafeteria, restaurants, and cafes

■ Much like home, a private student apartment has shared common areas: kitchen, bathrooms, and living room

■ Bedrooms are either for one person in a private room or shared by 2 to 4 people, each in single beds depending on the price you pay

■ To eat, you cook your own meals in the apartment’s shared kitchen or explore the neighborhood’s restaurants

Share an apartment with other students attending the same university. This is a place to build enduring friendships with your study-abroad family.

To immerse fully in the culture, your host university or a homestay agent can place you with a homestay family. You live alongside the family, sharing life, meals, and conversation with them.

■ Homestays offer a thrilling cultural immersion in a variety family structures, nationalities, races, and religions. For a comfortable homestay experience, we match host families and visiting students as naturally as possible

■ You walk, cycle, or use public transport—bus,

tram, train, subway—to commute between your homestay and university campus

■ To eat, you cook for yourself and/or your host

family or your family shares their meals with you

Oxford Women One of the first two women’s colleges at the University of Oxford, Lady Margaret Hall was founded in 1879 when just nine women – called bluestockings – gathered to study. They were not allowed to graduate, although they joined lectures and took examinations – it wasn’t until 1920 that women could matriculate and receive their degree. In 1977, men first entered LMH as students and tutors. And, in 2016, LMH was the first Oxford College to welcome underrepresented students on a foundation year. With its defining pioneer spirit, it has a welcoming, warm, academically rich community that leads where others follow.

Language Examinations

108

TOEFL iBT

Pearson

TOEIC

Widely popular and accepted worldwide, TOEFL iBT stands out as an internet-based test (iBT) at a test center. The iBT, you can take from the comfort of home. Each version of TOEFL tests all four academic areas — reading, writing, speaking, and listening — readying you for success at any international university. Your scores are ready in a few days.

With a test score delivered typically within 48 hours, Pearson is a popular, hasslefree way to show your language proficiency on your study abroad application. It’s a single, two-hour digital exam, graded by computer, that you take in a test center. There is no face-to-face examination with a person, and many distinguished institutions take Pearson results into consideration.

Testing English language proficiency, TOEIC focuses on everyday English most likely to be useful in an international workplace. There are two tests: TOEIC Listening & Reading, a multiple-choice paper of 200 items, and TOIEC Speaking & Writing, which you can take together or separately. Each test’s scores range from 0 to 200 and are used to allocate your proficiency level from 1 to 8 (speaking) and 1 to 9 (writing).

CET 4&6

IELTS

Duolingo

Twice every year, the national Chinese English Test, CET, assesses Chinese undergraduates’ and postgraduates’ proficiency in reading, writing, and listening. A spoken test is optional and only available to students with high scores in the other components. A good CET score is very important if you want to graduate or have a good job. CET 4 shows your English is good enough to do a bachelor’s degree; CET 6 shows a post-graduate level of English as a non-native speaker.

The International English Language Testing System grades on a scale of 1 (absolute beginner) to 9 (expert user) your English listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency. Created by a collaboration of global partners, the test is assessed by real people and not a computer. An IELTS score is required by immigration authorities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK.

An affordable way to prove your English proficiency, Duolingo is an online test that takes an hour. You can take it at home and need no appointment. As part of the test, you record a speaking sample to share with institutions you’re applying to. With adaptive questions, it effectively evaluates your ability, and you receive your scores within 48 hours.

IELTS for UKVI

iTEP

UKVI is specifically designed for United Kingdom visa and immigration purposes. As a student, you take a test that assesses reading, writing, speaking, and listening, using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to grade your proficiency. There are approved test centers both in and outside the UK, and, currently, you can only take the test at an approved center.

You can choose to take your International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP) at home or an accredited test center. It has a corresponding preparation course, and you can take the 90-minute test once every three days until you’re happy with your result. For an Academic-Plus iTEP, the assessment covers grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Considerations & General Requirements

Application criteria ■ Required language skills are subject to change without notice

■ Some faculties and majors require higher language proficiency / GPA than the school’s standards

■ Each faculty and major

field sets TOEFL / IELTS requirements and may define specific scores for each section

■ Evidence of learning history

may be requested as well as language / GPA expectations

■ Contact SAF if you don’t meet the criteria

■ To apply for SAF study

abroad programs and undergraduate courses, you need a GPA of 2.0 to 3.7 or higher. Speak with your SAF representative for details of your chosen university’s GPA standards

■ You need a GPA 2.0 or

higher to apply for language enhancement programs, but there is scope to accommodate lower than 2.0, so talk to SAF

Faculty, department, and major lists ■ Faculty, department, and

majors lists may change from semester to semester

■ Some faculties and

departments restrict access based on academic history, grades, and English proficiency

■ Some majors and classes are extremely oversubscribed or only accept limited numbers of students

■ It’s safest to assume your

first-choice major or class will be unavailable, so consider alternate options to avoid disappointment

SAF Global Ambassador Program SAF Scholars have the opportunity to become SAF Global Ambassadors, an inspiring community of students who understand just how transformative studying abroad really is—and want to share that with others. With the confidence gained only by studying abroad, SAF Global Ambassadors share stories with students on campus, discuss experiences, and support the next generation of applicants as they consider taking the leap into a life-changing study abroad experience. They’ve been there; they’ve done it. They’ve developed personally and academically, making this a community built to support SAF applicants by answering questions, mulling ideas, and enlivening student curiosity.

The SAF Global Ambassador program coordinates these efforts, empowering Global Ambassadors to share experiences through various mediums including:

Online blog content Social media Pre-departure and Alumni events Each SAF Global Ambassador receives a “welcome” package that helps students identify them on social media and on-campus. SAF Global Ambassadors are also eligible to receive rewards on their contributions to the program as well.
