Southern Miss’s attack gets Golden Eagles a win

CHARLIE LUTTRELL SPORTS EDITOR outhern Miss (3-2) broke a two-game losing streak on the road by returning home to beat the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) 3-1 with its strongest attack of the season.

“Taking those two losses is kind of hard, but I think after practice, we knew what we had to do,” senior defender Caitlin Pierce said. “We came in here with a high tempo and we executed everything we were supposed to. Everything we worked on at practice we did today, and I think that’s what helped us keep the tempo up. Everyone had a high energy and that’s when we started putting goals in the back of the net.”

The Golden Eagles dominated the attack, taking 22 shots with 16 on goal. Southern Miss also allowed its fewest shots of the season to pass, as the Miners only got four shots off throughout the entire game.

“The key for us [coming into the game] was dictating the rhythm of the game and winning our individual battles and we did that today,”

Southern Miss Soccer (3-2) broke its two-game losing skid by returning home and beating UTEP 3-1. The Golden Eagles had 24 shots with 16 on goal and allowed the fewest shots (4) it has in a game this season.

Head Coach Mohammed El-Zare said.

From the start, Southern Miss dictated possession of the ball and got on the scoreboard with a goal from Pierce in minute nine.

“It was a corner, just like the one set piece we’ve worked on all week [with] me staying back and finishing the ball that came out,” Pierce said about her goal. “We practiced it a lot and the feeling was relieving because we finally made one. We were talking all week about the set pieces, so it was nice to score the goal.”

After the senior scored, Southern Miss stretched to a 2-0 lead with a goal from one of its freshmen.

Aubrey Olin scored her first career goal on a header assisted by senior JoAnnie Ramos in minute 42.

“I was really surprised,” Olin said.

“I have good headers every now and then, but it just felt so easy and after it happened, I was like[,] ‘whoa’. I was shocked.”

Olin is one of Southern Miss’s eight freshmen. El-Zare says the seniors have “led by example” for the newcomers.

“With our seniors, particularly

JoAnnie Ramos, Jenny Caracheo and Ariel Diaz, they don’t just talk the talk but also walk the walk,” El-Zare said. “Today, it showed that they make the people around them better and even though they’re not on the scoreboard, they were critical for our result today.”

El-Zare also gave credit to senior defender Macie Pennington for her defensive plays, creating chances for attack.

“Macie Pennington was a rock for us today in her individual battles but also just how aggressive she was creating chances for ourselves. [...] She really stepped up,” El-Zare said.

Redshirt senior Alice Campos gave Southern Miss its final goal in minute 73. El-Zare credited Olin for creating the opportunity to score, and applauded her work throughout the match.

“When she [Olin] got her chance, she was able to execute and not only score, but that third goal was all her work pushing the ball, beating a couple of players and creating the chance for us,” El-Zare said. “You don’t know when it’s going to click, and it clicked for her today and I

was really proud of her effort and what she’s done.”

UTEP responded four minutes later with its single score of the game with a goal from redshirt junior Vic Bohdan.

“We did a good job, we converted, and we got the result we wanted but we also needed to convert better,” El-Zare said. “But I’m really proud of the effort and the energy on the sideline.”

The victory marked the first time in the series history that Southern Miss has won consecutive games against UTEP. Pierce says that, as the season progresses, the team continues to learn its identity and each other better. She believes this means only better things are to come.

“I think as each game comes, we get closer figuring each other out one game at a time,” Pierce said.

“Even in practice, we’re still figuring each other out. We’re still super close to the beginning of the season[,] so we’re getting there.”

Southern Miss plays next on March 12 in an away game against the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

Southern Miss offers education majors Virtual Reality teaching experience BRIAN WINTERS EXECUTIVE EDITOR aculty in The University of Southern Mississippi School of Education have been teaching future educators for more than 100 years, but never before have they been afforded virtual reality technology to enhance learning and practicum experiences.

With support from the Governor’s Emergency Education Response (GEER) Fund program through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act Education Stabilization Fund, Southern Miss students are gaining valuable, hands-on teaching experiences in a virtual classroom for the first time.

“Having access to a virtual learning environment gives our teaching candidates an opportunity to work with the latest in simulation technology while providing them with a safe environment to practice skills which are needed in both traditional and online classrooms,” Noal Cochran Ph.D, interim director and teaching professor of educational administration in the School of Education and associate dean for educator preparation in the College of Education and Human Sciences, said “We look forward to this innovative partnership and the many opportunities it will offer our students.”

ucation awarded GEER funding to the nation’s governors to address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on students and parents across America. Mississippi received an allocation of $34.6 million for proposals designed to prevent, prepare for and respond to the novel coronavirus.

After watching upperclassmen education majors at Southern Miss struggle to complete their practicum experiences due to the pandemic, Audra Classen Ph.D,Hollie Filce Ph.D and Anne Sylvest Ph.D composed a grant proposal for the GEER Fund program. Their innovative educational solution was awarded $115,736 and will transform the practicum experiences of hundreds of undergraduate teacher candidates at USM in the spring and fall 2021 terms.

Through a partnership with the AVATAR Lab at Kennesaw State University (KSU), the Golden Eagles Teaching in Virtual Reality (GET-VR) program utilizes state-of-the-art technology to create an immersive, mixed-reality environment for students to practice and master their skills. Funds are being used to implement training scenarios and VR simulations focused on high-leverage teaching practices. Southern Miss students are among the first in the nation to participate in these simulations developed by KSU and the Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability and Reform (CEEDAR) Center at the University of Florida.

“During a typical year, I oversee practicum experiences and teacher candidacy for approximately 400 undergraduates at USM. In 2020, many of these students had dramatically less time in field placements for their practicum courses due to obstacles resulting from the coronavirus pandemic,” Sylvest, director of educational field experiences at Southern Miss, said.

“Concurrently, enrollment in practicum courses has increased, pushing the limits of what our faculty can reasonably manage. Our goal for GET-VR is to help offset the impact of COVID on our intermediate and senior block students’ practicum experiences by providing targeted training and practice in a virtual environment.”

The AVATAR Lab delivers customized training scenarios that present professional challenges graduates will encounter on the job. Simulations focus on collaborating with families to support student learning and secure needed services, using student assessment data to analyze instructional practices and make necessary adjustments that improve student outcomes, using explicit instruction and strategies to promote active student engagement, and establishing consistent, organized and respectful classroom environments. The avatars are programmed to interact as second grade through high school students with a range of abilities and personalities, including an advanced student, an introvert, a rule-follower and a class clown.

“While nothing can replace live inter-

actions with students in our local educational settings, the coronavirus has forced K-12 schools to dramatically change their operational procedures, severely limiting opportunities for our teacher candidates.

GET-VR will aid these students in gaining a deeper understanding of high-leverage practices critical to their ultimate success as teachers,” said Dr. Hollie Filce, professor and coordinator of special education programs. “This technology offers a safe space for our teacher candidates to practice teaching and receive feedback, so they learn from their mistakes and grow more confident managing their own classrooms in the future.”

Southern Miss students are excited about the possibilities this new technology offers, including special education major Amber Taylor from Ocean Springs, Miss.

“I’m extremely grateful that our professors at USM saw our need, developed a plan and secured the best technology available so our student body can excel,” Taylor said. “They say 10 minutes of virtual reality teaching is like 45 minutes of teaching in-person because so many experiences are strategically packed into each session. I feel very blessed to be in this program because we have everything we need to succeed.”

NEWS MARCH 10, 2021 Nannie Mac’s expands to include a coffee shop MORGAN LAWRENCE PRINTZ REPORTER ye and Nannie McMullan, owners of Nannie Mac Snowball’s, have just expanded their family business by putting coffee -- and a coffee shop -- on the menu.

Nannie Mac’s, located across from Strick’s Bar-B-Q and Catering a half mile off-campus, is made up of a coffee shop and snowball stand which share a parking lot. They recently opened the shop on Feb. 26 and hope to see business pick up soon.

The couple got access to the building, once used for CrossFit, on Jan. 1. They were hoping to get everything open by Feb. 1, but things ended up taking longer than planned. The McMullans and their crew worked from dusk to dawn three weeks prior to opening. They say they have been worn out from the work, but, despite the postponement, the McMullan family remain optimistic for what’s to come.

“That’s what it takes to keep it up and going,” said Kye. “I heard from a good mentor of mine, Kirk Strickland from Strickland’s BBQ , that when they were opening up their business that[,] for the first 25 years[,] it was a struggle to get where they are. But now they wouldn’t change a thing.”

Kye and Nannie have a three-year-old son named Blake and hope to grow their business both for themselves and for him.

When visiting the shop, it is likely that you will see Blake’s smiling face running around while his mom and dad work.

“One thing about owning your own business is the freedom,” said Nannie, who is thankful for the opportunity that they have to spend so much time with Blake.

The McMullans hope to teach Blake about the value of owning a business and would like to leave the shop and stand to him one day, whether he decides to run it or not.

The shop now serves fresh coffee, tea lattes, Hershey’s ice cream and small handmade pastries daily. They offer milk substitutes like almond milk, soy milk and coconut milk. They also offer some sugar free syrup options and a vegan and lactose free ice cream. They are soon planning on adding other dietary options like oat milk, as well as other vegan and sugar free options.

At Nannie Mac’s, you can get the special Coast Roast coffee from Long Beach, Gulfport, which Kye calls “some of the smoothest coffee” in the South.

Since “frappuccinos” and “macchiatos” are trademarked drink items, they serve “frapps” and “upside-down lattes” on their menu.

One special item that they offer is an “affogato”, which is a scoop of ice cream with a shot of espresso over the top. Kye and Nannie also recommend that customers come in and try an upside-down latte with white chocolate and blueberry syrup, a “chocolate covered strawberry”

latte and the S’mores latte. Also, Kye says that, “if you are looking for a good pick-me-up”, customers should ask for the secret menu item called the “Frozen Mac”, which is a cold brew with a double shot of espresso.

College students are welcomed to Nannie Mac’s not only to get an enjoyable cup of joe, but also to sit down and study. They currently have about three outlets available for students to plug in their phones and computers and are trying to add more.

“We have free wifi,” said Nannie. “Students can come in, sit down and do their homework.” All while enjoying their sweet treats, of course.

In the future, the McMullans plan on

adding outdoor games in the back of the building where a couple of garage doors sit. They want people to enjoy a snowball or a coffee on a hot day and come play games together. They are also hoping to have this back space available to rent out for things like birthday parties and similar events around mid-April. As things are still early in the planning process, though, they are excited for what’s to come and hope to bring in more customers to make their dreams come true.

‘Nomadland’ is moving in more ways than one ZAIN HASHMAT PRINTZ REPORTER hloe Zhao’s ‘Nomadland’, released Feb. 19, is about moving. Moving from one town to the next, moving from past mistakes to a new future, and moving on from who we were to who we could be. A quiet, propulsive film that emulates the best of late-period Terence Malick, ‘Nomadland’ is a masterpiece about trying to find oneself on the road, and how the definition of “home” isn’t as grounded as we thought.

Zhao’s third film follows Fern, played by Frances McDormand, a 61-year-old nomad who has been traversing the Midwest for years. She initially lived in the small town of Empire, Nevada. But the town of Empire survived thanks to a US Gypsum plant, so when the plant shut down, the town disappeared.

Instead of finding a new job and house, Fern decides to live in her van and search for seasonal work around the deserts of the Midwest.

Early on, Fern makes something quite clear about her lifestyle: “I’m not homeless. I’m just houseless.” Fern is lucky in that she has a support system willing to help and give her a home. Yet, she keeps moving, refusing to look back to ponder the life that could be. For most, this might be a baffling choice of action. But for Fern, this is the only way forward. Moving is a form of survival. It allows her to work past the loss of Empire and her husband of many years. Because she married right out of high school, Fern never knew a life without her husband.

Now that he’s gone, it seems this is her way of trying to find one.

Zhao throws us right into Fern’s life with a sense of sensitive observation and a complete lack of judgement. Her daily chores are tedious and random. One day, she might have to worry about a flat tire. The next day, she’ll have to spend hours cleaning her car because of an ant infestation. She

obviously doesn’t have a shower or restroom at her constant disposal, and yet she feels completely content with her small home on wheels. So, why does Fern live like this? Why is she so content with her life? The answer to this question is where Zhao’s film best shines.

‘Nomadland’ showcases blazing sunsets, endless deserts, and sky-high redwoods that shrink McDormand’s figure to that of an ant. Natural lighting and real locations take center stage. Nothing feels false. Nature overpowers and dazzles ‘Nomadland’, and Zhao’s frame, with its large, scope-like 2.39 aspect ratio, gladly takes in the vast expanse of the American Midwest. The film’s cinematography is almost painterly as it revels in the ideal of the American west without ignoring its reality. Much like the characters in the film, Zhao’s camera roams and soars through every scene, restlessly moving as if searching for something that can’t possibly be found.

In this sense, the timing of this film is remarkable. As we inch closer to the one year anniversary of COVID-19 -- one year of worldwide shutdowns and government mandated quarantines -- there is a growing, collective resentment over being stuck in one place. There’s a beauty to the open road that ‘Nomadland’ captures gorgeously, and in ways no other film seems to.

Most of the other characters showcased in ‘Nomadland’ are nonprofessional actors. They are real nomads that Zhao and her team found when exploring the Midwest. So it is surprising that these people are not young, adventure seeking 20-somethings. Rather, the people that surround Fern are well past their 60s. They are middle-America boomers and older blue-collar workers that lost their savings in the financial crash. They live in their cars because there were few other options available, and it was better to take to the road to search for work elsewhere. It is an important reminder that while some want to live like this, others have to.

Photo courtesty of Variety that Zhao highlights are Swankie, a seasoned nomad, and Bob Wells, a sort of Santa Claus-like figure in the nomadic community. Though Wells’ story is a little more joyful, Swankie’s reveals a side to the nomadic lifestyle that is devastatingly poignant.

Swankie reveals that she became a nomad because she found out she had cancer. She wants to see as much of America as she can before she passes, and it is a need many others can relate to.

Real people populate the film and color it with a much needed naturalism. McDormand, a major movie star in her own right, keeps any sense of celebrity at bay. Her chiseled cheeks and short mop of grey hair paints a picture of someone that’s seen more than one needs to in a lifetime. Low key and quiet, McDormand completely disappears into the

film. There’s no melodrama. She understands that, although she’s the star of the picture, this isn’t her film.

The same could be said for McDormand’s romantic lead David Strathairn, the only other recognizable face in the film. Their chemistry sparks and charms, and creates a push and pull between Fern’s need to settle down and her need to keep moving.

‘Nomadland’ revels in the lives of van dwellers, including all of their ups and downs. It refuses to pass judgement on these nomads and decides, instead, to simply watch. This isn’t a picture about people who live without a house. Rather, ‘Nomadland’ is a film about people trying to find something bigger than that. And really, isn’t that what we all want?

‘Moxie’ fails to dig beneath the surface of the system it critiques MARISSA HAAS DESIGN EDITOR my Poehler’s ‘Moxie’, released on March 3, looks to Riot Grrrl legends like Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna for a DIY approach to a feminist revolution. However, ‘Moxie’ fails to learn from Riot Grrrl’s mistakes and doesn’t consider its target audience, ultimately falling flat.

The Riot Grrrl movement, founded in the early 90s, was a response to the sexism and abuse women faced in the punk music scene. The band Bikini Kill was at the forefront of this movement, and ‘Moxie’ references the band multiple times throughout the film, looking to their DIY zines as a form of guidance.

These zines discussed issues beyond the surface of “women are treated unfairly”, instead talking about issues of racism, classism, abuse and how these played a role in negatively affecting the lives of women. ‘Moxie’, however, only ever focuses on the issue of “women are treated unfairly”.

‘Moxie’ focuses on Vivian (Hadley Robison), a high school girl struggling to write a perfect college application essay.

She isn’t sure what she is passionate about, which serves as a stark contrast to her mother, Lisa (Amy Poehler). Lisa was very involved in the Riot Grrrl movement when she was in school and would protest any and every injustice with her friends.

new girl at school, Lucy (Alycia Pascual-Peña), tells her about how a boy at school is harassing her. Vivian decides to create her own Riot Grrrl-esque zine called “Moxie” that discusses the injustice girls face at their high school.

“Moxie” then becomes a school club that gives girls a space to discuss the sexism they deal with.

The film critiques the male gaze, patriarchal standards and sexism in the classroom setting, yet it merely scratches

the surface of what it means to have a true feminist revolution. It mentions the need for intersectionality, yet is not intersectional. It’s as if the writers read one Riot Grrrl era zine and decided they knew enough to make a movie about it.

The film also fails to realize that its audience is already aware the world is unkind to women. Women have become increasingly outspoken about the abuse and sexism they face everyday, especially

after the #MeToo movement. Conversations about issues in ‘Moxie’ take place constantly nowadays. We’re far beyond the surface level of this topic, but that’s the only thing ‘Moxie’ seems to focus on. Sexism and misogyny is so much bigger than “women being treated unfairly”. The film isn’t groundbreaking by any means, and it has absolutely nothing new to contribute to the conversation.

‘Moxie’ also fails to realize that its side characters are far more interesting than Vivian. Lisa mentions at one point that her protesting days were far from perfect. Her feminism wasn’t intersectional, and she constantly fought with her friends instead of fighting injustice. This short scene shows Lisa as a far more interesting character than Vivian. She is still a feminist, but her feminism has changed a lot to accomadate different perspectives and issues.

The same can’t be said for Vivian.

The Moxie club included girls of other races than Vivian, and Moxie itself is published anonymously. However, Vivian acts as the sole voice of Moxie, as she is the only one who contributes to the zines. It doesn’t matter how many diverse girls you have in your group. If your only representative isa white girl, your group isn’t intersectional. It’s as if Moxie writes feminist lines in the script, but doesn’t actually believe in them.

‘Moxie’ maybe would have been a groundbreaking film ten years ago, but in today’s age, it is incredibly outdated.

It brings nothing new to the table, yet still acts as if it is revolutionary. Save your time and watch something that has something new to say.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed a rigged economic system in the United States. While millions lost their homes and jobs as they entered into extreme poverty, wealthy people added billions to their fortune. Over the last 30 years, the wealth share of the bottom 90 percent of households has also been dwindling, but the top 0.1% of families’ share of wealth has skyrocketed.

Some right-wing politicians and experts claim that Warren’s plan is unnecessary, as they are firm believers of “trickle-down economics”, which states money from the wealthy will eventually get reinvested into the economy as it would help them remain wealthy.. To stimulate the “trickle-down” effect, legislators will occasionally raise income taxes on rich households. This process carries a lot of loopholes, however, and its execution is not steady, as tax rates change with new administrations.

Thus, Warren’s plan of wrestling stagnated dollars from the ultra-rich and redistributing them to the poor could be a better alternative to the outdated and lousy system of trickle-down economics.

The Warren tax proposal will certainly help those who struggle to make ends meet, but will be even more useful for safeguarding American democracy in the future. Because of rising inequal-

Wealth Tax could be a new method of money redistribution

enator Elizabeth Warren has recently proposed a wealth tax on ‘Ultra Millionaires’, with several of her colleagues in Congress agreeing to endorse it. This proposal could, if enacted into law, level the extraordinary wealth gap between rich and poor Americans, and help reinvest the amount that is collected into useful social causes.

In this plan, Warren outlined what measures will need to be taken so that money from the rich U.S. households will actually enter into the tax system.

A new two percent tax will be levied on households that have trusts and net worths between 50 million and a billion dollars. Also, a new four percent annual Billionaire Surtax will be levied on households whose net worth crosses a billion dollars. The revenue through these taxes over a decade is speculated to total over 3.75 trillion dollars. Attempting to evade this tax by renouncing the citizenship of the U.S. will not be easy or cheap, either, since the “exit tax” will make it so someone would have to pay 40% of their entire net worth to leave.

ity, regular citizens are unable to utilize upward mobility in the socioeconomic ladder, educational opportunities and entrepreneurship opportunities to improve their lives. These opportunities that define, for many, freedom in American society will flourish if Warren’s proposal is implemented.

The one percent’s chokehold on the nation’s wealth has hindered the economic growth of America. Warren, with the majority of government on her side, could create a novel proce-

dure of redistributing wealth in the United States. The longevity of this plan is uncertain, however, as there are few countries that continue to tax the wealthy in these ways.

If this proposal does get made into law, it will stand the test of time. The U.S.’s economy, ruined by pandemic, will spark to life once again, and the wealth gap between the rich and poor will shrink, bringing better opportunities and living standards for the bottom 99% of people.

Pulling some Dr. Seuss books is a necessary evil JENNIFER SHIELDS PRINTZ REPORTER ancel culture has been on rise within the last few years.

Whenever a celebrity, a company or an otherwise infamous public figure is found to have committed a crime or scandalous act, many people come together to “cancel” that product or figure by no longer supporting their work or boycotting any future projects.

There has been a lot of controversy around cancel culture, though, especially the people it chooses to target. The most recent of these targets has been Theodor Seuss Geisel. Geisel, better known by his pseudonym Dr. Seuss, was an author and cartoonist best known for his children’s books. During his lifetime, he wrote and published over 60 books, including ‘Cat in the Hat’, ‘The Lorax’ and ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’.

However, it was revealed last week that six of his works contained harmful stereotypes and racist imagery. One of those books was ‘And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street’, which was Seuss’ first published work.

When the news was released, many were under the impression that all Dr. Seuss books were being canceled.

However, that is not the case. Though mainly active throughout the 50s and 60s, a lot of Seuss books are considered to be ahead of their time regarding issues like environmentalism and war.

However, Seuss was not immune to all of his world’s biases, and many have criticized the unconscious racism present in his work.

The Seuss estate has also taken note of these issues and has reviewed these books within the last year. After some debate, the estate decided to stop production of some of Seuss’s books. These books include ‘And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street’, ‘McElligot’s Pool’, ‘The Cat’s Quizzer’, ‘On Beyond Zebra!’, ‘Scrambled Eggs Super’ and ‘If I Ran the Zoo’.

This decision was made after company members had talks about the impact Seuss had on the community at large.

Dr. Seuss is one of the world’s top children’s authors, and millions of his works have been sold globally. Thus, it is only natural to assume that readers will be heavily influenced by Seuss’s works.

By allowing these books that misrepresent minorities to see republication, the next generation could be influenced in harmful ways and make it so that racism is continually, if subtly, perpetuated.

By stopping production of these books, the Seuss Estate is taking responsibility for its founder’s actions and making

efforts to keep his legacy alive without being disrespectful to minorities.

So, why is this happening now? Simply put, discussions about racism and outdated stereotypes are being discussed and protested in a larger context than previously seen. This increased scrutiny is what made the Seuss Estate reevaluate these older books in the first place.

However, is stopping the production on these six books considered censorship? According to Oxford Languages, censorship is “the suppression or

prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security”.

Seuss’s works, by definition, are technically being censored. However, it is being censored due to the nature of the imagery depicted. Seuss is still widely loved as an author, but the more problematic parts of his writing are not being overlooked, either. Censorship is a necessary evil in this case because of the people it has and will potentially affect.

Southern Miss Volleyball splits series with UAB CHARLIE LUTTRELL SPORTS EDITOR outhern Miss avoided a series sweep by rebounding from its first loss against the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) with a 3-1 victory in the second game.

The win against the Blazers moved the Golden Eagles to a .500 winning percentage in conference play. Southern Miss has won three of its six conference games so far this season, after only winning one of 13 last season.

Southern Miss started the weekend with a 3-1 loss, which marked the third consecutive loss for the team.

“We were really timid, and we made a lot of errors in situations where we were given free balls,” Head Coach Stephanie Radecki said about the team’s performance in the first game.

Radecki also said the team made an adjustment in the second game to accommodate UAB’s outside attack with a better defensive performance.

“We made a big adjustment [in the second game] of taking advantage of more opportunities,” Radecki said.

“They’re outside heavy, they’ve had their pins a lot and we made some adjustments blocking.”

Radecki credited junior Addie Ashton’s defensive performance for helping them in the second game. This was her first start of the season, and Ashton recorded two blocks and four kills.

“I think Addie Ashton went in and did a great job on the right side,” Radecki said. “She hadn’t seen the court for a while, so it was nice to get that performance out of her. I think our team feels really confident when she’s blocking[, too,] so that was nice to see.”

Southern Miss claimed a contested first set that had nine ties and three lead changes, but dropped the second set by 11 points. However, the Golden Eagles recovered and took the last two sets with 25-20 victories to win the game.

Junior Duquesne Moratzka notched her eleventh double digit kill performance of the season with 12 kills. Fellow juniors Nyanuer Bidit and Kinsley Hanback also reached double digits, as Bidit recorded 12 kills while Hanback had 11.

In the midst of all of this, Southern Miss honored its seniors, Madison Lawler and Piper Matsumoto, after the first game.

“They’re both amazing people and amazing athletes. We care about them deeply. They made a lot of sacrifices for our program,” Radecki said.

In her four years playing, Lawler has recorded 1299 digs, which ranks eighth in school history.

“Madi is a player that I inherited[,] but has become my player,” Radecki said. “It’s been fun to watch her see the process, buy in and be so invested in our coaching staff.”

During her two years as a setter at Southern Miss, Matsumoto has recorded 1019 assists.

“She works hard all the time and she does anything you ask her to do. That’s really hard to find these days,” Radecki said about Matsumoto. “We love and care for both of them a lot.”

The Golden Eagles will next play in an away series at UTSA before returning home to close out the regular season with a series against North Texas.
