Reminisce in spring threads Kathryn Miller Executive Editor

This season leaves me feeling nostalgic but completely rejuvenated. It reminds me of the days when I was young and I would play dress up with my childhood friends. My friends and I had no cares in the world and we were comfortable in our own skin before the body image issues stepped in a few years after. It was before the dreaded days of middle school when the same friends would begin to drift away. This spring brings me back to those shining moments of free spirit, wanderlust and young oblivion.

This spring will take you on a journey through your adolescence.

Go back and discover that young wonder and who you were before life began to blur away your imaginary tea parties and your treehouse sleepovers. Remember the style you envisioned as a young girl: was it funky, eclectic, prim and proper or classic? (Although we had some idea, many of us had not learned these vocabulary words in our English classes yet). The looks in this spread are a mix of hip and classic essentials that will fill your closet for years to come.

However, trends are not the main focus of this spring’s edition because trends are temporary and they do not help most of us define a true sense of style. Trends are an experiment every season, just like when you change your coffee order between fall and

spring (peppermint mocha v. iced caramel latte). The latest fads are not as essential like the first pair of sleek black Christian Louboutin pumps we finally marry on college graduation day (well, that is who I will be marrying anyway).

You will fall in love with slinky kimonos, easy cropped tops, bright scallop shorts and tribal accessories. A day could be as easy as slipping on a pair of flared lace pants along with a navy printed tee. The clothes you will wear in the next few months are effortless and chic.

Spring clothes are no longer a difficult decision, they are a mere afterthought. You can now view them as simple and versatile and ready-to-wear pieces that only require a colorful bandeau or a zipper enclosure. You now have the time to go ride a bike, shop at the farmer’s market or attend a cocktail party in fluent style, but without the strategic outfit planning.

So, let your personality shine through your clothes this season and take risks. Big risks. Dress only for yourself this season. Slip on your favorite vest and pair it with an unexpected blouse.

Unlock your youthful imagination and find inspiration with costume jewelry, gladiator wedges (at least now you can fill out your mother’s shoes), flirty maxi dresses and floral tops. Take the time to pinpoint your inner schoolgirl and have fun with your clothes.

Peek inside this spring edition just for you and your wardrobe.

Long and flowing dresses of robin egg blue, cream, mint and bright floral are ideal for any spring deck party. Make a long dress fancy by throwing on some pastel wedges and a textured clutch or go barefoot for a midnight beach stroll. Pastels are the epitome of spring but when doused in lean silhouettes, the look becomes romantic and sensual.

Hub City patrons flock to beer festival Kristy Shelley Printz Reporter

The Second Annual Hattiesburg Craft Beer Festival took place Saturday, April 12 at the Train Depot in downtown Hattiesburg.

More than 600 locals and 40 breweries attended the festival this year.

For $30, patrons were able to sample a wide variety of homebrew and craft beer from all over the United States.

According to the event’s website, the goal of this event is to support and expand the craft beer culture in Mississippi. The state has seen a great deal of change over the last few years when it comes to craft beer.

The changes they refer to are craft beer sections expanding in local groceries, new breweries opening and two bills passing in Mississippi – one allowing for a higher percentage of alcohol in beer and another legalizing homebrewing.

Ford McDonald, a festival attendant, said the event was a great way to learn more about different types of beer.

“I wanted to try the different types of beer and expand my horizons,” McDonald said. “I tried many different styles that I wouldn’t have tried before.

Usually I just go to the grocery

store and get Miller Lite, but this event really opened my eyes to a vast variety of beer.”

McDonald said that since the different laws have been passed in Mississippi, he has noticed a change.

“I know raising the alcohol level is a big thing they’ve done around here, and because of that, there is more of a selection,” McDonald said.

“The more they do events like this they’ll notice that it is a big deal for people in the state to have the craft beers and home brews that just aren’t available everywhere.”

Josh Sullivan, attendant, said he loves supporting the craft beer movement.

“I really want to support the craft beer culture in Mississippi, not only because it helps form a communal bond for everyone in the city, but because as a business industry, it really helps out the economy of the state,” Sullivan said. “Events like this really help establish a Hattiesburg community – both relationally and economically – and I’m really happy to take part in it.”

He said the two laws passed in Mississippi has really helped create a craft beer market.

“It brings in variety and that’s what defines a market.

Passing both of those laws allows for the craft beer market to blossom,” Sullivan said.

Some vendors were from out of town, like Schlafly Beer from St. Louis, Mo., NOLA Brewing from New Orleans, La., and Straight to Ale from Huntsville, Ala. Drew Stanford, brewer for Straight to Ale, said they are happy to be at this year’s fest.

“We chose to come out to support and promote our brand because we’ve finally been able to reach out to South Mississippi,” Stanford said.

“When it comes to higher alcohol beers, it’s great that people have been able to change some legislation and bring better alcohol into the state.”

Stanford said the two new bills are vital to spreading awareness of the proud tradition and diversity of craft beers.

“It’s very important for people to understand that beer is not simply Bud, Miller or Coors,” Stanford said. “There are a lot of varieties out there available for the standard consumer and there is much more to explore.”

Granston Boxx, brand manager for Lazy Magnolia, said they loved it so much last year that they decided to come back.

“Events like this allow for people to come out and try a lot of beers that they’ve never had and they have a lot of beers that you can’t find at the local bars or local markets,” Boxx said. “It also allows breweries to try out

new products and see what kind of feedback they receive on them.”

Boxx also said passing the two laws has been tremendously important and helpful for the state.

“One of the things about the higher alcohol percentage law is it allows breweries now in Mississippi to produce a lot of the styles that other breweries outside of the state can,” Boxx said. “It restricted a lot of

different styles that were out there and on the table.”

“With home brewing, it’s going to produce a bigger following for craft beer, “ Boxx said. “It’s going to have people start brewing their own beer, and maybe even opening their own breweries, which is going to grow the craft beer movement in Mississippi.”

Undergraduates present at symposium Megan Fink Printz Reporter

The Undergraduate Research Symposium gave undergraduate students at The University of Southern Mississippi the opportunity to present their research projects Saturday, April 12 in an event that spanned the entire day and the entire campus.

“This is a conference for all of USM and I wanted everyone to participate to represent the whole university,” said Amy Chasteen Miller, chair of the planning committee. “Every college and

every dean was on board. Thanks to the generosity of Donald Drapeau, our donor, we are able to award more than $12,000 in prizes to our students.”

“We tend to think about research as a graduate thing, (but at this event) you get a real sense of the magnitude of what’s being done by our undergraduates,” Miller said.

The event has always featured presentations of research papers from a wide variety of disciplines, from polymer science to religion.

In 2014, performances from the Department of Dance and the Department of Theatre took center stage, and a jazz

performance by the newly formed Eagle Jazz Quintet entertained attendees during lunch.

Molly Howel, a junior dance education major, presented her choreographic project “Joy az Élet: Joy of Life” Friday night. The first part of the title is in Hungarian.

“My grandmother actually emigrated from AustriaHungary to the United States in 1926,” Howel said. “She died this past spring at 99 years old. So, because I was very influenced by her life and things that she experienced, I wanted to incorporate Hungarian folk dance into modern dance.”

The choreography was Howel’s junior project and her only opportunity to present a major choreographic work.

This year marks the first time that a poster presentation event was added, and 25 students presented their research to attendees. Joshua Bergeron, a senior marine science major, presented his research about ocean acidification in the poster event.

“If anything, posters are more terrifying than presenting a paper,” Bergeron said. “You get really good questions from out of your comfort zone, because people from other fields look at

(your work) a different way.”

As Kathleen Burns, an alumna of Honors College at USM, put it in her plenary lecture, “all research of all stripes in all fields is fundamentally a creative process. You’re generating new knowledge, and you need an intelligent, creative brain to do that.”

The students who participated in the Undergraduate Research Symposium Saturday certainly gained experience in what research entails, and they will use that knowledge to continue their studies.

Fraternity hosts football camp Mary Sergeant Printz Reporter

The men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity hosted their first-ever SAE Charity Bowl Mini Camp Sunday, April 13. The fraternity invited campers from the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp, a camp designed for adults and children with disabilities.

The event included stations and games on the intramural fields across from Fraternity Row. The children were able to practice football drills, toss the football to one another and of course, show off their tackling skills. The fraternity also offered hula-hoops and jump ropes for the children to play with.

Sorority women also came out to the intramural fields to lead games such as Red Rover and

Duck, Duck, Goose.

After the games, attendees were invited back to the SAE house to enjoy a cookout filled with more activities, such as face painting done by the ladies of Delta Delta Delta sorority.

The campers were also awarded medals by the fraternity men for their participation in the games.

In past years, SAE has hosted Charity Bowl, a fullcontact football game between fraternities. During halftime, they have a member of the civitan participate in an activity and be recognized. This year, they added the mini camp to encourage members to become more involved and invested in their philanthropy while also providing a fun-filled day for the campers.

“We decided to add this mini camp to our charity bowl week because we wanted to not just donate our money, but donate our time,” Moquin said. “I think that spending time with the kids of the civitan camp is just as important as the money in which we donate. We get to put a smile on a kids face and that is what its all about.”

Terri Daniels, director of the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp, came to enjoy the two-hour mini camp and cookout.

“It’s great to see the volunteers at the end of the first week of camp,” Daniels said. “They aren’t afraid of what they don’t understand anymore and many go on to work with people with disabilities in the future.”

“We may be doing this camp and charity bowl to help out the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp, but the campers give us back much more,” Coco said.

The Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp was founded 53 years ago. The camp lasts for two

weeks during the summer and is for children of all ages.

Typically, the camp is host to 85 campers every summer.

The camp schedules daily activities such as arts and crafts, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and many more activities. In the fall, they offer a weekend-long camp for adults to participate in.

Phi Music Fest benefits Children’s Miracle Network Yolanda Cruz

Social Media/Web Editor Phi Mu held their fourth annual Phi Music Fest to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals April 11-12.

“Whether they suffer from common childhood afflictions like asthma and broken bones, or fight bigger challenges like birth defects or cancer, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals provide comfort, treatment and hope to millions of sick kids,” said Hannah Curtin, philanthropy chair for Phi Mu. “In fact, Children’s Miracle

Network Hospitals treat one in 10 children in North America each year,” Curtin said. “These kids aren’t in faraway countries or from opposite sides of the nations - they’re in your community. All of our proceeds from Phi Music Fest events will go directly to our local CMN hospital, Blair E. Batson in Jackson, Miss.”

This year’s Phi Music Fest consisted of a step show competition between the Greek organizations Friday night and a carnival Saturday afternoon.

“We tried to do things a little differently this year,” said Emily Radcliffe, president of Phi Mu.

“Greek organizations were paired in two’s or three’s and will be competing as a team throughout the two days of competition.”

“We really wanted to evoke the idea of organizations working together toward a cause, and we always try to embrace any opportunity we have to continue Greek unity on our campus,” Radcliffe said.

This is only the second year that Phi Mu has included a step show to the last of activities in the Phi Music Fest competition. Six teams competed, with the team of Delta Delta Delta and Pi Kappa Phi taking home first place.

Saturday was the big event.

Bands came out and played music from 12-3 p.m. at The District.

The teams decorated booths and played games such as corn hole and water pong. There was even a dunking booth. Food was served all throughout the event.

“They had a huge raffle with really great stuff like Vera Bradley bags, name brand sunglasses, quilts and Southern Miss apparel,” said Miranda Mixon, a student and member of the Greek Life community.

The most touching part of the day was when a cancer patient from Blair E. Batson Hospital shared her journey with everyone who attended Phi Music Fest.

Chi Omega won the overall competition, and over $28,000 was raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Music festival brings diversity to ‘Burg Kirstie Lowery Printz Reporter

Sunday, April 13 Hattiesburg residents gathered to hear local talent perform at South City Records’ annual SCR Music Festival.

The organization, an independent student-run record label at The University of Southern Mississippi, brought many Mississippians together by inviting a variety of musicians to perform at the event.

According to www. festivaltransfers.com, the festival previously took place at Benny’s Boom Boom Room and featured artists such as Cardinal Sun and Oh, Jeremiah.

In 2014, the record label and the Keg and Barrel came together to create an even more diverse show for local music fans.

The event took place around the backyard deck of the bar and drew in crowds from all around the state.

According to the newly elected South City Records President Hunter White, the SCR festival featured talented musical artists

including Chris Hartfield, The Squirms and Stellatone.

“We were able to cover a wide range of genres from hiphop to country to rock, so we’re really proud of it,” White said.

He discussed why the record company chose artists of different musical backgrounds and how he hopes the diversity in the festival will continue to attract bigger crowds.

The festival began with a short speech by former SCR President Drew Young. Young thanked everyone for coming out and those involved with the show.

Afterwards, performer Chris Hartfield graced the stage.

Hartfield began his act by playing the song “Always be Crazy,” before playing other tunes, such as “Convoluted, “City of Thorns” and “Mary’s Away,” a song about a girl who ran away from home. Hartfield then talked about what inspires him to write many of his songs.

“It can be anything from sappy movies to political events,” Hartfield said. “I mean, it just varies.”

Students react to Miss. religion law Patrizia Dwyer Printz Reporter

Thursday, April 3 Gov. Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2681, better known as the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This bill that claims to protect individuals’ religious beliefs is being opposed by many, but mainly by the LGBTQ community.

Biology major Tyler Moseley is truly disappointed by the passing of this bill.

“It saddens me that our legislature could pass a document so vague and ripe for misinterpretation,” Moseley said. “I believe in religious freedom, but discrimination is an ugly thing.”

So what does this bill say?

Section 1 of the bill says “state action shall not burden a person’s right to the exercise of religion.”

Here, “burden” is defined as any action that “constrains, inhibits, curtails or denies the exercise of religion by any person.”

The bill also states that the exercise of religion includes “the ability to act or the refusal to act in a manner that is substantially motivated by one’s sincerely held religious belief.”

Section 2 of the bill adds the phrase “In God We Trust” to the state seal.

During the month before the bill was passed, many politicians within the state were distancing themselves from the bill for economic reasons. In response, executive director of the Christian Action Commission, Jimmy Porter, wrote a letter to state Republican representatives threatening to make a public spectacle of every representative that failed to vote in favor of the bill.

“This bill is a perfect example of how a little lobbying and lazy legislators who don’t read the bills can sneak something so wrong into something as innocent as changing the state emblem,” Moseley said.

Based on the fact that LGBTQ individuals are not fundamentally protected by any legislature against discrimination the way that an individual is by race, many have understood this bill to essentially legalize discrimination against, and segregation of, members of the LGBTQ community.

But that brings to mind: even if someone could decide to change their sexual orientation, should they feel the need to do that so as not to live as a second-class citizen in Mississippi?

For a state in which being Christian is the norm, it seems backward that an act should be passed in order

to protect Christians from discrimination. After all, the Mississippi Constitution is one of only seven states that decrees “no person who denies the existence of a Supreme Being shall hold any office in this State.”

Taking into account both this section of the Mississippi Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, one must wonder: whatever happened to separation of church and state?

Despite all this, it is reassuring that individuals aren’t alone in this opposition. The teachers and administrators of Tougaloo College and Millsaps College issued a joint letter expressing their concerns about this bill.

Similarly, a joint statement was issued by The University of Mississippi’s Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies and the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation, warning of violent and hateful consequences.

Despite clamoring support from Southern Baptists and Old South legislators, both students and teachers all over Mississippi agree that SB 2681 is bad news.

USM tops UTSA in convincing fashion James Johnson Printz Reporter

Southern Miss men’s tennis team continued its winning ways Friday as they beat The University of Texas at San Antonio 4-2 behind strong performances from their doubles matches.

Senior Paulo Alvarado played a dominant role in USM’s victory. Alvarado won both his matches 6-4 and 7-5 over Yannick Junger. USM is now 11-9 as the season is coming to an end.

Numbers three and two is where the Golden Eagles took the first point of the match in doubles wins. At the numberthree spot Alex Doleac and teammate Grigory Trotsenho beat UTSA Roadrunners Diogo Casa and Fabian Brand 8-3, their best victory of the season.

USM secured another point when teammates Chao-Yu Huang and Vasco Valverde doubled up on Yannick Junger and Boburjon Kamilijanov with an 8-4 victory.

UTSA had a pair of teammates that were ranked No. 47 in

the nation in Tomas Stillman and Joel Rubio. Alvarado and teammate Juan Escobar had the nationally ranked duo rattled, as they were up 7-5 when the match was called. Southern Miss dominated in doubles and the success continued in singles.

Huang started off the single action against Kolby Kilgo and won posting scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Huang’s victories gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead overall. It would not take long for USM to get their third point of the day, as Valverde beat Rubio 6-2 and 6-4.

UTSA would bounce back and cut the lead to one when Casa ousted Escobar 6-4 and 6-0. Stillman defeated Doleac with 6-1 and 6-3 victories.

USM needed just one more point to reach game point.

It was down to two people to secure the victory, Alvarado and Trotsenko. It did not look like USM would reach the game point as Trotsenko lost his first set 6-3, but came back strong in the second set with a 7-6 win. Alvarado won his first set, but had to come from behind in his second set in order to

win the match.

Alvarado trailed 5-4 and knew he needed to come back for his team. He got refocused

and beat Junger 7-5 in true comeback fashion and gave USM the 4-2 victory.

Southern Miss will finish

their season against LouisianaLafayette with their three seniors getting honored before the match.
