Demolition on campus makes way for big projects Carly Tynes Printz Writer Weeks ago, demolition began on Vann, Bond and Scott Halls, old dormitories on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi, in preparation of several new additions to the Hattiesburg campus.

According to reports from the Physical Plant, Vann Hall is completely down, with the east end of Bond Hall down as well.

In 2014, the USM campus will welcome in place of the demolished buildings a 954-bed residential complex called Century Park South. Century Park South will be an energy efficient, state of the art facility that will house the Luckyday Foundation office and the Student Health Clinic as well as residents.

Due to the Feb. 10, tornado, the demolition that was supposed to take Scott Hall completely to the ground has been put on hold.

The demolition to Scott Hall is the last major demolition scheduled to occur in the area where Century Park South residents will one day reside.

Michelle Shinall, Assistant Director of Marketing and Campus Relations for the university’s physical plant, said the focus has turned from the demolition on Scott Hall to the upcoming demolition on Elam Arms Hall, which was damaged in the tornado.

“We’ve made sure Scott Hall is empty and structurally sound, so whenever our focus shifts from Elam Arms, the building will be ready for demolition,” Shinall said. “Elam Arms seems like the biggest reminder of the tornado’s impact to campus, so we decided to shift our focus to taking it down.”

Shinall also said that crews are currently working to stabilize the abandoned Hardy Street building. Demolition of Elam Arms should begin shortly, according to the Physical Plant’s schedule.

“Elam Arms is another constant reminder of the tornado, and we feel as if taking the building down as soon as possible will

help with that.”

Elam Arms is expected to come down within 45 days once the building is stabilized for work crews. There are talks that the area where the building will have once stood will become

either a green space or a gravel parking lot for students.

SGA welcomes new officers

Mary Margaret Halford Executive Editor When they were seniors in high school, Ann Marie Chilcutt and Owen Terry met at Southern Miss during their priority previews. As freshmen, they joined Freshman Associates and got involved in various other capacities around campus. On Monday afternoon, the two stood before students, faculty, staff and alumni and accepted their roles as the newest president and vice president of the Student Government Association.

“I think both of us realized we share the same passion for students and for USM in general, and that’s how it came about,” Chilcutt said. “We saw that we’re both hard workers and want to give something back to the university we love a lot.”

In addition to Chilcutt and Terry, Allen Moore, Chris Brewer and Crystal Johnson

also officially accepted their roles as members of the SGA executive board.

“I believe we’re going to work incredibly well together,” said Moore, who will serve as election commissioner. “We have goals to uplift this university and really show students that their opinions matter.”

Brewer, who is the new attorney general, said the fact that most of the new officers had already known each other will be beneficial in them working together.

“We’re already comfortable collaborating,” Brewer said. “I think we’ll have a convenient time working well together for the future of the student body.”

For Johnson, who is the new treasurer, student government has always been a goal.

“Even in middle school when it was called student council I wanted to be involved,” Johnson said. “I felt like this position needed to be restored, and I’m excited to work with people who are interested in the phi-

lanthropy commission.”

But for Chilcutt, the most important thing is to listen to students.

“Rather than dictating my goals and ideas, I want to really give students a voice,” Chilcutt said. “I wake up everyday and I’m the same Ann Marie, I just now have a really cool outlet to help with what students want and need.”

“Our overarching goal is to put students back in student government,” Chilcutt said. “I want people to believe in SGA again and really recognize that we are doing this for the students.”

Downtown receives business boost

If I can hear clearly the words to the song, It is too loud.

Those are the words local business owner Jason Le Viere used to describe downtown Hattiesburg and the plans he and co-owner Adam Myrick just announced to revamp the area by opening a salon and fitness center on East Front Street.

“We’re creating a destination,” Le Viere said. “It’s really going to bring livability and value to this street.”

Le Viere and Myrick, who own Click Boutique & Gallery and Twelve Oaks Accessory Garden, said the two new businesses, Body Bar and Wig Bar, are scheduled to open in September on the first floor of the historic America Building, one of the two historic buildings being transformed into Hub City Lofts.

Le Viere said the purpose of the project is to draw people downtown, particularly the post-graduate crowd.

“I think it’s important to get students comfortable with downtown,” Le Viere said. “We want you to live here, to stay here and grow with us.

It goes back to that downtown lifestyle, and we definitely have ways you can grow with us as a young professional.”

“There’s a huge disconnect this city has with a young professional,” Myrick said. “When you look at any major market, they have a surplus of the 24 to 35-year-old age bracket, and that’s vital to their growing economies. We’ve become such a retirement area, we don’t have anyone creating newness, and that’s what we wanted to do with this project.”

Le Viere said both the gym and

salon will have student packages available, and he promised the experience at both businesses would be unlike any other in Hattiesburg.

“The salon will be about three or four chairs, nothing huge,” he said.

“The theme will be a ‘sip and snip’ with champagne and cappuccino.

The people at the salon will have a very city-like, urban experience.”

As for the gym, Le Viere said he plans to have top-of-the-line equipment, and the facilities will be open 24 hours a day.

“I think it’s really going to strengthen that community and culture downtown,” Le Viere said. “Hattiesburg is something to be proud of, and this will be something that adds to that sense of pride people have in the place they come from or where they went to school.”

For Myrick, getting students in-

volved in downtown not only adds to the community’s experience, but to the student experience as well.

“I think part of the holistic fouryear experience is getting to see multiple aspects of the world,” Myrick said. “Our arts and cultures experience in downtown Hattiesburg is something that’s unique to us and should absolutely be part of that four-year experience.”

Winter is here: ‘Thrones’ season premieres Arielle Edwards Printz Writer It’s finally back. Season three of “Game of Thrones” premiered Sunday, and the long awaited show did not disappoint. HBO’s smash hit went head-to-head with AMC’s zombie drama “The Walking Dead,” delivering a whopping 4.4 million viewers for its season premiere.

Season two of “Thrones” ended with a plate full of questions, which are on the way to being answered in season three. Although it lacked some “boom” that usually accompanies every episode, I had to remind myself that it was just the first episode of an entirely new season. The opening scene almost gave

me a heart attack as Sam Tarly came face to face with one of the terrifying White Walkers.

The show, based on George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series, has barely dipped into the heart of the book series. Only covering half of “A Storm of Swords,”

while plans of marriage were decided on between Margaery Tyrell and Joffrey, the stupid king.

Let’s not even get started on the bloody present left for Rob Stark in Harrenhal. Gross. Obviously, he has a few enemies, namely Gregore Clegane. Not to mention, you just want

his son, threatening to hang “the next whore” that lays in Tyrion’s bed.

My favorite focus of the series centers on Jon Snow, the drop-dead gorgeous bastard son of Ned Stark, who has now dedicated his life to work at the Wall. Season two left Jon behind the Wall, which is not good

(the third book in the seven-part series) season three will go into detail and tie up all the loose ends season two left behind. The battle between the Houses of Westeros continues

to cry for Tyrion Lannister. He’s by far one of the best characters in the series, but his father, Tyrrian, hates him. Tyrrian Lannister denounces Tyrion as heir to the throne and as

for him. He’s fast on his feet when he meets the King Beyond the Wall, Mance Rayder, as he says he wants to join their forces.

I’m disappointed that I didn’t see

or hear anything from Aria, but hopefully the next episode will fill us in on her whereabouts. I’m sure she’s tired of just “being a boy.” We did, however, get to see a short scene with Sansa; she’s still trying to escape from Joffrey’s backhand.

We see the most badass blonde anyone will ever hope to meet, Dany, surveying men for her army. (What’s with the guy getting his nipple cut off ? Another gross moment.) And we meet a new character, Selmy, who saved Dany from an assassin.

‘Walking Dead’ season finale disappoints Tyler Hill News Editor “The Walking Dead” season three finale aired Sunday, and it was an interesting way to end, compared to the other two actionpacked finales. I must admit that the dorkiest thing about me is that I read “The Walking Dead” comic books, so watching three seasons of this series on television has had some interesting twists, many of which I have enjoyed, but others not so much.

Season three revolves around Rick, the leader of a group of survivors, and his followers who find a prison, that for the most part, looks safe and secure, especially compared to other areas in the zombie-infested world. After making the prison a halfway decent home, trouble ensues as the leader of a local community called Woodbury causes troubles for Rick and the gang.

The Governor, played by actor Philip Blake, can sort of be compared to a career politician. When you first meet him, he seems like a

wonderful leader, only to find out that he’s a lying bastard. In the Governor’s case, however, he kills for fun, plays with his zombie daughter and stores decapitated heads in oversized Mason jars.

For fans watching season three in its entirety, we expected World War III between the Governor and Rick, but unfortunately it never happened. In the comics, there was a huge battle at the prison between the two groups. Major characters were killed, new characters were introduced and the Governor died.

The television finale wasn’t similar

in any fashion, which in the end is fine. It didn’t need to be like the comic because the Governor is the type of character that can stick around longer than one season.

Andrea’s death was pitiful. I understand they were trying to draw emotions, but let’s get real. Andrea is one of the strongest characters on the show. She’s a fighter. She’s knows how to shoot a gun. She’s, quite frankly, a bad ass.

You’re telling me she couldn’t fight off one little zombie? They walk less than one mile an hour. Instead, she fooled around for most of

the episode and allowed a zombie to suck on her neck until she died.

Usually “The Walking Dead” does a fantastic job with killing off main characters (i.e. Dale’s dramatic train wreck, Shane’s resurrection and Lori’s death brought on by her son, Carl), but they didn’t do justice for Andrea’s character.

Overall, the season three finale is definitely worth watching, and it by no means turns viewers away from watching season four. Just don’t expect the explosive, jaw dropping plots like seasons one and two.

Robbins leads Eagles to C-USA series win Barrett Negus Printz Writer

Game 1

The Golden Eagles took advantage of three Central Florida errors and an outstanding start from sophomore left-hander Jake Drehoff to take the opening game of the series 4-1 Thursday night in Orlando.

The win snapped a threegame losing streak for the Eagles, who tied the game at one in the fourth, with a two out unearned run off Knight starter Ben Lively. Blake Brown, reaching on a fielder’s choice, stole second before scoring on a Chase Fowler ground ball to second base was thrown wide of first.

Drehoff pitched eight solid innings of baseball, allowing only a single unearned run in the first inning. Drehoff struck out six hitters, walking three, allowing only four hits before giving way to Jay Myrick in the ninth inning.

Myrick came on to shut down the Knights in the ninth for his first save of the season.

With the game knotted 1-1 going into the eighth, the Eagles pushed across a run on back-to-back one-out hits from Isaac Rodriguez and Mason Robbins put runners at first and third. Rodriguez scored on a misplayed Tim Lynch ground ball back to the pitcher putting the Eagles ahead for good 2-1.

The Golden Eagles added two insurance runs in the ninth on two bases loaded walks to

Lynch and Robbins to provide the final runs. Robbins had two of the Eagle four hits on the day.

Game 2

The Golden Eagles allowed four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to blow a three run lead in game two of a three game series at Jay Bergman Field in Orlando.

The Eagles broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a Travis Creel RBI ground out before tacking on two more runs in the fifth on a run-scoring double from Mason Robbins and RBI single by Jared Bales.

Creel, Robbins and Bales notched two hits apiece to lead the Eagle attack.

Southern Miss starter Andrew Pierce tossed seven scoreless innings before a walk, hit batter, and double down the line closed the gap to one. Cody Livingston (0-4) came on to shoulder the loss, giving up one earned run on three hits in 1/3 innings pitched.

Fisk, who improved to 2-1 on the season, threw seven solid innings of baseball, allowing six hits and striking out a season-high seven batters without a walk.

The Eagles’ Travis Creel broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning with a tworun shot over the left-field wall after a Chase Fowler double, putting the Eagles up 2-0.

The Knights got one back in the bottom of the inning on a Cris Taladay RBI single up the middle to make it a 2-1 game.

This was short lived, as Blake Brown hit a two-run dinger in the top of the fifth, his third homer of the year, stretching the lead to 4-1.

Taladay and the Knights struck again in the bottom of the ninth, with a two-run shot of his own of Eagle reliever Bradley Roney, closing the gap to 4-3. Roney set down the last three hitters for the save, his third of the year.

Robbins, C-USA Hitter of the Week Mason Robbins had four multiple hit games last week on his way to a .688 batting average (11-for-16) to earn Conference USA Hitter of the Week honors.

This is Robbins’s first time winning the award in his two years at Southern Miss.

The 2011 Gatorade Mississippi Player of the Year has seen his average raise .62 points in only a week, while stabilizing the middle of the Golden Eagle order.

Robbins had a four-hit game against South Alabama, sandwiching a pair of two-hit games with a 3-for-3 performance in the rubber match against Central Florida on Saturday.
