USM falls to BYU in heartbreaking loss Kyle Smith Sports Editor

BYU had four players in double figures as they eliminated Southern Miss from the NIT on Wednesday night, 79-62.

The Eagles got off to a quick start in the first half with a quick 5-0 run.

The Cougars took over from there.

Brock Zylstra provided the early spark for BYU, hitting five three pointers in the first half to account for 15 of his 18 first-half points. Ty-

ler Haws also scored 12 in the first half for the Cougars.

Southern Miss was able to gain some ground near the end of the first half when they went on a quick seven point run to cut the BYU lead to three.

BYU quickly extended the lead however, scoring the last 8 points of the half to lead 40-29 at halftime.

The game was never closer than that, as BYU opened the second half on an 8-2 run to blow the game open.

Southern Miss fought hard, but couldn’t overcome the play of BYU’s three guards- Zylstra, Haws and Matt Carlino.

Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall said the Eagles were not caught off-guard by BYU’s offensive weapons. Haws, Carlino, Zylstra and Brandon Davies combined for 75 of the Cougars’ 79 points.

“BYU is a really good team,” Tyndall said. “They are a three headed monster with Haws, Davies and Carlino, and tonight they added a fourth with Zylstra- who was fantastic as well. It seemed like they never missed one. “ Southern Miss senior Rashard McGill added that the Eagles weren’t surprised by BYU, and the Cougars were just a step quicker all night.

“They are a very good BYU team,” McGill says. “They beat us to more loose balls tonight, they made extra plays and they stayed within the disciplines of their system.”

Daveon Boardingham led the Eagles with 18 points. Jerrold Brooks added 13 points, and Jonathan Mills grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

Haws led all scorers with 25 points, while Carlino added 15 points and nine assists and Davies poured in 12 points while grabbing 13 rebounds for BYU. Zylstra finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Southern Miss shot just 23.5 percent from three and 33 percent from the field. The Eagles also struggled from the free-throw line, going 16-27 for the game.

Southern Miss campus ready for recovery Carly Tynes Printz Writer Weeks after the Feb. 10, EF-4 tornado damaged parts of the Southern Miss campus, the Physical Plant is continuing to work diligently to restore campus to its original beauty.

The Ogletree House, commonly called the Alumni House, was one of the buildings that sustained the worst of the damage on campus. The Ogletree House was one of the five original buildings on campus, opened as the president’s home in 1912.

Because the Ogletree House is considered to be a historic building, Physical Plant employees have partnered with the Department of Archives and History to restore the building as close as possible to its

origins. Although no work has been done to the outside of the structure, it has been reported that the inside of the structure has been sustained and all artifacts have been removed.

According to Michelle Shinall, Assistant Director of Marketing and Campus Relations for the Physical Plant, plans to restore campus are in the making, but the university is waiting on insurance before any major decisions can be made.

Shinall said that no changes would be made to any structures until negotiations are made with the insurance company when the company delivers its cost estimate on damages the university received.

“The tricky part about Ogletree House, specifically, is that teams will have to work hard at not only reconstructing the structure, but restoring the structure due to the

historical status of the building,” Shinall said.

The fence surrounding campus on Hardy Street and U.S. 49 also received heavy amounts of damage. The fence, which was near completion, will be repaired with a fund set up by MDOT, according to Shinall.

Neel Schaffer, Inc., the engineering firm that designed the fence, will be paying the university’s part that the MDOT fund may not cover.

Along with reparation of the fence, there have been plans made for the portions of the landscape that was damaged, which left students feeling vulnerable to Hardy Street traffic, to be repaired bigger and better than before.

“The front of campus is not only meaningful to staff, faculty and students, but to the entire Hattiesburg community,”

Shinall said. “We’re doing all we can to gather plans to restore the landscape in the area. We are hoping for it to be bigger and better than before, and we plan to work hard until that is the case.”

Anna Jo Berry, 23, a public relations graduate student from Petal, said she was just getting used to the beauty at the front of campus when she transitioned from an undergraduate student studying history in the Liberal Arts Building to a graduate student studying in Southern Hall.

“When the tornado devastated my campus, it devastated my new surroundings,” Berry said. “My still heart aches when I stand on the steps of Southern Hall and look out at the destruction. However, I am blessed to have experienced the beautiful campus before the storm, and

I am confident that USM will rebuild, regain its beauty, and restore its history.”

Due to damage other buildings sustained across the front of campus, many students were displaced from original classrooms and placed in what was nicknamed ‘Twister Town,’ an area of rented spaces for classrooms placed in a parking lot behind Hillcrest residence hall. Recently, those students have been returned to a building of some sort and have been removed from the rented buildings.

Despite missing the NCAA tournament, Tyndall felt that the NIT gave the program a chance to grow.

“Long term wise, I would say the NIT was very beneficial. It gave even more of an audience a chance to see this team. I am sure some people, for the time being, are disappointed, but

most people are excited for the future of our program.”

McGill added that the student support played a crucial part of the season for the Eagles.

“It meant a lot to hear the students chanting at the end of the

game,” McGill said. “The whole season, they have been growing and growing and growing. I hope they keep it up. If they do, I see a lot more success coming to the University of Southern Mississippi.”

Southern Miss ends the season with a record of 27-10.

BYU moves on to play Baylor in the semifinals of the NIT in New York City.

Nursing Building Campaign receives $1 million Arielle Edwards Printz Writer The College of Nursing Building Campaign is one big step closer to reaching its goal of raising $8 million after two Laurel natives made a pledge of $1 million to the cause.

Joe Sanderson, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Sanderson Farms Inc., and his wife, Kathy, will be the namesakes of the Sanderson Clinical Simulation Lab of the new nursing building.

“My wife and I are very pleased to support the expansion of the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi,” Joe Sanderson told Southern Miss Now. “We know that our state will need the health care professionals that will be produced out of this program including registered nurses, nurse practitioners and nurses with PhDs who will teach

other nursing students. We congratulate USM on its vision and are happy to add our support.”

The nursing building campaign was announced in January 2012, and as of this month, $5.3 million in commitments has been raised. The campaign began with a $4 million donation from the Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg, which led to the naming of the new facility, Asbury Hall.

The total cost of the project sits

at about $28 million, with some money coming in the form of federal and state grants. Of the $8 million raised by the Foundation, $3 million will be set aside for long-term maintenance needs.

The new, state-of-the-art building will be located on the western side of the Southern Miss campus, and it will be a 135 percent increase in squarefootage from the current building. The Sanderson Clinical Simulation Lab will be an 8,000

square-foot space on the second floor, featuring simulated patient areas and records for students to work with.

“The Sandersons are wonderful stewards of their finances, and they have made an incredible impact on this state with their charitable contributions,” Executive Director of the USM Foundation Bob Pierce told Southern Miss Now. “We appreciate all they have done and of course are grateful they decided

to make such a sizable gift to this important project.”

In addition to providing an 86,000 sqaure-foot space for students to work in, the project aims to increase the size of the Southern Miss College of Nursing as a whole. According to the USM Foundation website, there is a goal of increasing the program’s enrollment from 550 to more than 800 students and expand new programs within the College of Nursing.

“The Southern Miss College of Nursing faculty and students are extremely grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson for their generous support of our growing program,” Dr. Katherine Nugent, dean of the College of Nursing, told Southern Miss Now. “The Nursing Clinical Simulation area is a vital aspect of the education of nursing students as simulation improves clinical skills, facilitates critical thinking and prepares our graduates to be proficient nurses.”

Students encouraged to participate in survey Arielle Edwards Printz Writer Senior associate provost at Southern Miss, Cynthia Easterling encourages students to spill their thoughts on textbook costs by completing a student textbook survey.

“The students have until April 19

to complete the textbook surveys,” said Easterling. Southern Miss is interested in the students suggestions and thoughts about the costs of textbooks and needs help. The survey is located in SOAR for all courses.

Once a student completes the survey, they are then entered to win two $100 Visa gift cards redeemable anywhere a Visa debit card

is accepted.. Two students will be randomly selected from those who complete the SOAR textbook survey for all courses. Southern Miss says that YOUR input about the cost and use of textbooks and course materials is important to the administrators. After April 19, the results will be compiled and will assist in compliance with the Higher Education

Opportunity Act, a federal law that went into effect on July 1, 2010. The purpose of the law is to ensure that students have access to affordable textbooks and course materials by increasing transparency and disclosure about the selection, purchase, sale, and use of all textbooks and course materials.

“Your input about the cost and use

of textbooks and course materials informs our USM community about providing an affordable education as authorized by federal law (Higher Education Opportunity Act, 2010) and helps us understand our continuing efforts to provide you with a high quality educational experience,” says Easterling.

Disability accomodations: Helping or hindering?

Courtney McNichols Printz Writer Each day, nearly 16,500 students travel the Southern Miss campus attending their classes. Among these students are those who, like me, live with some sort of disability. I don’t think it’s fair that I should struggle with the accommodations on campus in addition to the struggles I already face in life.

My name is Courtney McNichols. I am a senior Interdisciplinary Studies major. More than 16 years ago, a car accident left me mute and confined to a wheelchair. I sustained a traumatic brain injury, commonly called TBI. Doctors diagnosed my resulting physical condition as static encepha-

lopathy. Static encephalopathy is permanent and unchanging brain damage. I have issues with spasticity and balance. I also have little control over my facial muscles.

The demographic makeup of the ODA population with a TBI at this university is 2 percent, according to Office of Disability Accommodations Director Suzy Hebert, who added that her office currently serves 460 students. Eight percent of that population has mobility impairments.

Most buildings on this campus feature an accessible automotive button and a ramp, and they are typically located at the front of a building. Some buildings even have multiple buttons.

Despite the accommodations that are present, things aren’t always easy.

Latoya Olive, a senior majoring in social work, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair to navigate campus.

“The only thing I have a problem with is some of the accessible

doors around the campus do not work sometimes, and that’s a pain,” Olive said.

A problem I personally face is the accessibility to wheelchair ramps. I frequently go to the Walgreens on Highway 49, and the ramps that get me to the crosswalk are badly placed. It’s an inconvenience to have to backtrack and search for a ramp when it isn’t in the location where I need it to be.

The ramps to enter buildings are also placed badly. Most ramps are on the side of a building, and getting to them seems to be more of a hassle as opposed to the distance able-bodied individuals travel. They simply use the stairs. Using the ramps can sometimes feel more like punishment than assistance.

Though I realize the accommodations on campus are built to assist me, the accommodations that are non-functioning are more than just a pain to me. I’m temporarily paralyzed when a door won’t open. This sensation is equivalent to my fragile

arms being handcuffed to my armrests with no chance of escape. Life is already difficult enough. The least someone could do for me and others like me is make sure we have the working resources we need to exist as students here.

Once I recover from the split second of shock, I dig in to overcome this struggle. Even if I lose my balance in trying to open those heavy doors, it will be somehow worth it because I took control rather than depending on someone else.

My most recent struggle came after the Feb. 10 tornado, when the Mass Communication and Journalism Department relocated from its home in Southern Hall to newly renovated College Hall on March 6. Because the move was originally supposed to take place this summer, the building wasn’t up to code with the Americans with Disabilities Act because it did not have accessible buttons until after spring break.

Dr. Christopher Campbell, director of the MCJ department,

shared with me his struggles in contacting the necessary individuals to fix this problem. He said that he contacted the campus physical plant every day for a week before the doors were functional.

Then again, some buildings like the Honors College are not so easily accessible. My visit there required me to go all the way around to the very back to find a ramp but no button. It appeared to me that there are no plans in place to improve that because I was told to knock on the door and someone would let me in.

I do not expect the world to bend over backward for me because I am disabled. There would be no glory in that for me. I do, however, expect better of the accommodations in place that make living with my disability a little more bearable.

Basketball fever strikes Southern Miss Cory Gunkel Printz Writer

When the clock hit 00:00 at Reed Green Coliseum Wednesday night, what was left of the sell-out crowd came to its feet.

While booming chants of “US-M” rang throughout the walls of The Greenhouse, Donnie Tyndall and his team somberly sang the alma mater together for one last time.

The heartbreaking loss to BYU put an end to one of the best seasons in recent Southern Miss history, but it couldn’t break the spirit of the fans who have supported the team during their improbable NIT run.

As the crowd cheered in appreciation when the final buzzer sounded, it suddenly became clear.

Basketball fever has hit the Hub City.

An atmosphere like the one on Wednesday night is rare for a program with little national success and only three NCAA Tournament appearances in its history.

But what was once a rarity is slowly becoming the norm as Donnie and the Boys usher in a new era of Southern Miss hoops.

Basketball at Southern Miss has largely been marred by apathy since its start in 1911. At a school where football and baseball reign supreme, basketball seems to have always taken a backseat.

That time is over.

Hundreds of people lined up outside the coliseum entrance two hours before tip-off against Louisiana Tech just three days ago. Fans of all ages filed into Reed Green and stayed until almost midnight to watch the Eagles win.

Students ran like caged elephants towards fraternity row in celebratory glee after the opening round win over Charleston Southern.

The energy level during USM’s three NIT games was raw.

It was electrifying. It was real.

And it was just what the doctor ordered.

Being a one seed in the NIT is exactly what Southern Miss needed to end the indifference that has resonated within the fan base for so long now.

These three extra post-season home games have sprung enormous support from Golden Eagle faithful that has simply been unmatched.

Chairback and floor seats for

the quarterfinal game against BYU were sold before some people left the parking lot Monday night. The student section was packed to the brim for all three games.

Would a one-and-done in The Dance have created this kind of passion?

I think not.

Missing the NCAA Tournament has turned into a big blessing in disguise for Southern Miss basketball. What Tyndall and company have accomplished in just one short year has been more important to the future of USM hoops than anything since the 1987 NIT Championship.

This type of run, playing at home in front of thousands of boisterous fans, has begun to build something that will be felt within the program for a long time.

As the Eagles prepare for another season under the helm of Tyndall and his staff, the Southern Miss fan base is finally starting to come together for the basketball team.

And just think.

This is only the beginning.

Jags outlast Eagles 3-1 in 10 innings Barrett Negus Printz Writer The Golden Eagles gave up two unearned runs on three errors, and left nine runners on base in a mid-week 3-1 ten-inning loss at the hands of No. 24 ranked South Alabama.

“We are finding ways to beat ourselves instead of finding way to win games,” Assistant Coach Chad Caillet said. “We just cannot seem to get out of our own way right now.”

Mason Robbins collected his third hit of the game, a triple off the wall in right-center, to start the ninth inning rally. Jaguar closer, Kyle Bartsch then issued a walk to clean up hitter Isaac Rodriguez before Blake Brown tied the game with a single to left-center field, scoring Robbins, tying the game at one.

Bartsch (3-0), who received a win despite giving up the lead in the ninth, sat down the next three Golden Eagle hitters to keep the game knotted at one.

He had only allowed one earned run the entire season before the Golden Eagles touched him up for a run on two hits.

South Alabama’s Jordan Patterson led off the tenth by reaching on an error by shortstop Michael Sterling. After a walk and single loaded the bases courtesy of USM reliever Cody Livingston, Daniel Wineski gave up a two-run single with the bases loaded to put the Jags up 3-1.

The Golden Eagles threatened again in the tenth after a two-out walk to Dillon Day followed by a Robbins single to left. James Traylor struck out Isaac Rodriguez with a full count on a pitch out of the strike zone to end the game and earn his first save of the season.

Livingston (0-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning pitched.

Cameron Giannini took the ball from Lowery in the seventh inning, tossing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only a single hit, and striking out three Jag hitters.

The loss overshadowed a stellar start by starting pitcher, Sumrall native, freshman Luke Lowery. Lowery threw six innings, giving up one unearned run, and striking out five in a no-decision.

Robbins led the Eagles at the plate, collecting four of the teams eight hits, and scoring the only run.

“Pitching was great tonight, and we had our opportunities

on the offensive end throughout the game, but our execution just has to be better,” Robbins said. “We hit some balls hard early, just had nothing to show for it.”

The Golden Eagles (9-15, 1-2) travel to Orlando Thursday to play the University of Central Florida in a three game conference series. Southern Miss has lost 9 of their last 11 games.
