• Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported 192 homes destroyed and 338 with major damage with assessments still ongoing in Forrest County.

• Officials also reported 58 homes destroyed and 194 with major damage in Lamar County.

• This is the second violent tornado to impact Lamar and Forrest counties in National Weather Service records. The other violent tornado was an April 1908 tornado that tore through Purvis. This tornado was on the ground for 155 miles and impacted many across Louisiana and Mississippi. A total of 143 people were killed by this tornado, including 60 in Lamar County and four in Forrest County, according to the NWS.

• The National Weather Service declared Sunday’s storm to be an EF-4 tornado, which means three-second wind gusts at 166-200 mph were possible in some areas.

Destruction caused by a tornado Sunday night was revealed the following morning as state and federal agencies began to survey and assess damages across Forrest and Lamar counties. According to MEMA reports, more than 700 homes along the storm’s path suffered damage. Emergency officials report that 82 individuals were injured and treated at two local hospitals because of the storm. No fatalities have been recorded.

New president steps up to the plate following disaster Mary Margaret Halford Executive Editor

Just two days after being named the tenth president of the University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Rodney Bennett left his home in Georgia to return to Hattiesburg and oversee relief efforts following a disaster that left parts of campus destroyed.

Though Bennett said the tornado wasn’t his ideal way of beginning his time at Southern Miss, he was impressed by efforts of students to get involved.

“I’ve been so encouraged by the love that students have for Southern Miss,” Bennett said at the Campus Clean Up Day Wednesday morning. “I think when you have that type of energy and that type of commitment, it really just helps us be the best institution we can be.”

Bennett, who was named president after a 20-step search process that began last spring when Dr. Martha Saunders

abruptly resigned, was serving as Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Georgia when he took the reigns of the presidency at Southern Miss.

Dr. Rodney Bennett Dr. Hank Bounds, the Institutions of Higher Learning Commissioner, said he’s thrilled with the choice to hire Bennett and his performance so far.

“Often times, a crisis can reveal character in leadership, and I think he has performed very well,” Bounds said Wednesday night. “This is not the way you want to start your presidency, but i think he has shown phe-

nomenal leadership, especially in such an adverse situation.”

As for Bennett, the pride he’s seen in Southern Miss students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans has inspired him to do the best he can for the university.

“I could not have been greeted with more support from the Hattiesburg community and our students in how we have responded to the events of Sunday as evidence by the participation by students, faculty, staff and the community,” Bennett said.

Though Bennett has praised the dedication of the Southern Miss community since his arrival on campus last week, he was especially proud of the student body effort he saw Wednesday at the Campus Clean Up event.

“This is just overwhelming to see how many students turned out, not because of extra credit and not because it’s any benefit to them except for the love of their school,” Bennett said.

“That’s really special.”

Universities lend a helping hand to USM Mary Margaret Halford Executive Editor When an EF-4 tornado swept across Forrest and Lamar counties Sunday night, University of Southern Mississippi students were not the only ones gearing up to start relief efforts around Hattiesburg.

“Southern Miss To the Top, we’re here at your disposal,” said Jackson State University’s Student Government President Brian Wilks. “‘For the people’ was my campaign slogan, which means being there for students and community. That goes beyond JSU and Hinds County.”

Wilks said his student body is collecting such items as toiletries and bottled water to bring to Hattiesburg Friday, though they are not the only university stepping up to help.

A group of 13 people from Mississippi State University came to Hattiesburg Monday bearing chainsaws and generators to help with the Hattiesburg relief efforts.

“It’s important to support each other’s schools and communities, especially after a catastrophe,” said MSU sophomore Allison Dueitt, who added that the project is not over just yet. “Mississippi is a family, and our unity is required in order to recover fully from devastation.”

Dueitt said students at Mississippi State are planning to keep donating supplies and spreading the word about fundraising for as long as necessary.

“It’s important that USM knows we have their back and we are willing to help in any way,” Dueitt said.

The University of Mississippi has also begun planning to be part of the relief efforts in Hattiesburg, according to Ole Miss senior and Big Event co-director Doug Odom.

“The response up here has been overwhelmingly positive and

we’re ready to help out however we can,” Odom said. “So many people are looking to help out.”

Odom added that plans are being made to coordinate a trip to Hattiesburg for clean up, and canned good and hygiene product drives are already underway.

Across state lines, students at the University of South Alabama created an event called “Paws Out for the Eagles.”

“We’re definitely going to get involved,” said Cassie Fambro, executive editor of the university’s school newspaper. “With the tor-

Vandy helps out with gift of music While many colleges and universities in Mississippi and Alabama got to work collecting food and toiletries to send to Hattiesburg, a trombone professor at one Tennessee school decided to show his (and his students’) support a little differently.

Jeremy Wilson posted a video to YouTube of his Vanderbilt trombone students playing the Southern Miss alma mater, and after less than 24 hours online, the video had more than 3,000 views.

“As cheesy as it sounds, I really just wanted to reach to the soul more than anything,” Wilson said Wednesday. “The best way I

Wilson said he came to visit Southern Miss about a year ago and “fell in love with the university.”

“I instantly felt at home,” Wilson said. “I couldn’t even imagine something like this happening at my own school - in my own buildings.”

Wilson said when he heard about the storm Sunday night, he spent hours trying to figure out a way to reach out to Southern Miss and contribute. He decided to talk to his students, and they decided to learn the alma mater to do as a warm up.

“We really just wanted to reach out and provide encouragement,” Wilson said.

“When I saw the front of our student newspaper discussing ways that we, as a university, are giving back to the university that once helped us in our time of need, my heart was touched,” said 20-year-old junior Kayla Foto.

“It’s so awesome being a member of two communities willing to do so much for one another.”

Several other schools across the southeast have stepped up to help, including Alcorn State University and William Carey University.

“We’re thinking big,” Wilks said. “We really want to show that there’s unity between our schools.”

Students aid in campus clean-up Tyler Hill News Editor On Sunday at 5:03 p.m., an EF-4 tornado ripped through Hattiesburg and the surrounding area, devastating homes, landmarks and businesses, including the University of Southern Mississippi. Three hours later, a campus-wide, student led cleanup effort was organized on Facebook.

What started as a student interest group to help restore and rebuild campus to its original state quickly turned into a mass coordination group of not only student volunteers but also community residents.

Ned Nelson, a student who organized and created the event, said he did not think twice about creating the Facebook page.

“I just kind of created the page off the whim,” Nelson said. “We quickly went from 50, 60 to 300 members in a matter of hours.”

The group eventually had more than 900 members pledging to volunteer their hours to restore campus.

“Originally, we just thought we’d show up with a small group of students asking ‘how can we help out,’” Nelson said. “When we saw how quickly the group was growing, we had to brace ourselves, so we made sure to get approval from the university and go down the right avenues. We couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout and the genuine servant leaders USM has.”

and safety purposes. Wristbands were also provided to help designate which targeted clean up areas each group would assist.

Before the groups dispersed to their areas, incoming university president Rodney Bennett showed his appreciation.

“You should be very proud of yourselves for the way you have responded to this situation,” Bennett said. “This is our institution. It is going to succeed or fail depending on what we do and each of our personal commitments to its success.

Brandon Baker, a music education major, said he was amazed at how many students showed to volunteer, especially because of the holiday.

“I was helping the check-in process, and people kept coming in, making it such a non-stop process,” Baker said. “I am overwhelmed with the response of the students and the community who came out to join us.”

Fortunately, many students were home due to the Mardi Gras holiday break, so no injuries were reported on campus. To many, the extra storm day was looked at as an extension to their holi-

day break, but Baker said he and other volunteers put their focus on Southern Miss.

“People love this university so much,” Baker said. “We want to make sure that we are making this university better than we found it.”

Not only did students put on gloves and grab garden tools to help USM, they also went to Facebook and other social media outlets to express their love for the university.

“I’ve never been more proud to be a Golden Eagle today,” Ann Marie Chilcutt, a junior communication studies major, said. “This place is so much more than a school. It’s a family and a home. I really do love my Southern Miss.”

Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Paul was overcome with emotion when speaking about the student body and their efforts.

“I’m about moved to tears,” Paul said. “Over 900 students helping, leaving it better than they found it. It’s an awesome day for Southern Miss.”

Millions in damages reported at USM Tyler Hill News Editor After assessing damages caused by an EF-4 tornado, officials estimate it will take tens of millions of dollars to repair and restore parts of the University of Southern Mississippi.

The Board of Trustees for State Institutions of Higher Learning held a meeting Wednesday afternoon in which they voted unanimously to allow IHL Commissioner Hank Bounds to make approvals such as contractual purchases or legal issues without board approval. This will allow Bounds to authorize these actions as necessary instead of waiting until the next board meeting.

As the tornado pummeled the Pine Belt, it devastated many homes and businesses in Hattiesburg, leaving wreckage that will take months to repair. At Southern Miss, many historic areas took a hit.

The iconic Ogletree Alumni House, built in 1912 to serve as the president’s home, received a majority of its damage on the southeast side of the building, where

the roof and walls were blown away. The front columns, along with brick and windows, were also damaged during the storm.

The historic District, which serves as a landmark and tailgating section

for the university, lost most of its trees, many of which were hundreds of years old. The Lake Byron bridge was also heavily damaged, along with the Rose Garden and the new fence that runs along Hardy Street.

The Department of Music was the only part of campus that has classes and was damaged by the tornado. The Jazz Station was completely destroyed, which held many jazz concerts, ensembles

and practices. The Performing Arts Center (PAC) received some water damage in a few of its classrooms and roof damage. The Fine Arts Building (FAB) suffered water damage, broken windows and doors and debris intake. The newly renovated auditorium in Marsh Hall also experienced damage to its wood floors. It does not appear there is a substantial amount of damage to either personal or university equipment.

Other buildings on campus received such damage as broken windows or paneling, and some university vehicles also had blown out windows and water damage.

Most of the damage is expected to be covered by a $500 million insurance policy, which has a $100,000 deductible. The insurance plan will also pay an estimated $400,000 to rent and set up 16 portable classrooms on the north side of campus, according to Bounds.

Bounds said 87 class sections will be in temporary quarters while they repair the fine arts area of campus. He also said officials are currently concerned with continuing cleanup to make campus safe before shifting the focus to the rebuild effort.

Weather Channel blows it...again Hannah Jones Managing Editor

As numerous news sources made their way to the Hub City Monday morning covering the weekend’s post-tornado damages, The Weather Channel failed to understand Mississippi geography yet again.

In the wake of 2012’s Hurricane Isaac, the cable network referred to our great state as the “Land Mass between New Orleans and Mobile.” Monday, the geographically challenged channel managed to name the correct state but failed to pinpoint Hattiesburg. During a Weather Channel reporter’s telecast, a graphic appeared on screen saying: “LIVE Johannesburg, MS.” As millions across the nation reviewed the horrific damage wrought by Sunday’s tornado, Hattiesburg became Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. A for effort, right?

Wrong. There’s a little body of water called the Atlantic Ocean standing between Hattiesburg and Johannesburg.

And to think we are supposed to be considered the ignorant party. The flub was captured via camera phone and immediately posted on the Facebook page of “The Land Mass Between NOLA and Mobile” Monday morning. Internet memes and biting, sarcastic comments quickly followed.

One photo posted on the page showed a survey of the damage suffered by USM, including a sign that read “SMTTT.” A cheeky commenter kindly reminded The Weather Channel that “SMTTT” didn’t refer to Southern Madagascar.

Southern Miss - 1 The Weather Channel- 0 Since the misunderstanding, however, The Weather Channel released an official apology in response to the Facebook post stating: “Thank you for posting this. We apologize for the mistake— we noticed it and corrected it for the rest of our coverage.”

Regardless of a two-sentence apology most likely written by a 20-year-old intern sitting at a desk in a sea of cubicles, the impact of such a “mistake” says more than someone’s inability to use Google Maps. Mississippi’s poor perception in the media is frequently reaffirmed, even in times of crisis such as Sunday’s tornado. Long live our beloved Land Mass.

After referring to Hattiesburg as “Johannesburg” on national television during their coverage of the tornado this weekend, the Weather Channel issued a formal apology to the city, promising to correct the name on all future coverage. The oversight was only one of a few since Hurricane Issac in the fall.

Social media and disaster: Staying plugged in Hayley Bush Printz Writer

The other day I was thinking about my future as far as my career goes, and I came to the unsettling realization that a large portion of my success will be determined by Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets.

Also, if for some reason social media sites ever go under, I’m basically done for. However, the tornado reassured every doubt I’ve ever had about public relations and social media.

Social media played a key role in the preparedness level for the tornado that hit Hattiesburg on Sunday. I knew exactly where the tornado was heading five to ten minutes before it hit because of my Twitter feed. In fact, I followed the whole thing on Twitter and then decided it might be a good idea to turn on The Weather Channel. I was not in Hattiesburg, so I had the luxury of watching cable that

evening. However, during a crisis, most people don’t have cable, so a social media feed is likely to be one of the only lines of information.

“Social media has proven to be the best method to get communication out in a variety of ways. It’s not just pushing information out, but asking for and giving information as well. It is something that has been proven to be the way to go in the future,” said Lici Beveridge, a digital and social media manager for the Hattiesburg American.

In the situation in Hattiesburg, social media has been key to organizing volunteer efforts. Around 900 University of Southern Mississippi students were mobilized for the campus clean-up through Facebook. People and groups from all over the United States are tweeting churches and businesses in Hattiesburg asking what they can do. Shelters are able to list what they need and have it shared and retweeted for the information to reach thousands of people. Social media allows many of our ideas and ambitions in a crisis situation to become a reality.

I looked back through my Xanga page recently, which was my first time around the social media block. Xanga is basically my virtual diary from ages 12 to 14. It also reminded me of what a name dropping, materialistic, middle school freak I was. Anyways, I posted on Xanga to express my feelings during Hurricane Katrina when my family’s home was destroyed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. And by feelings, I mean my emotional capacity of about two sentences at the time. People commented on my posts and gave me “eprops” expressing their sympathy and prayers. Fast forward to 2013, where people can not only express thoughts, but mobilize volunteer efforts and send relief through social media, all from a few taps on an iPhone. There is also Instagram and Vine, which allow instant photo and video sharing to be used in a crisis. I doubt Xanga ever saw this coming.

A few hours after the tornado hit, I searched for “Hattiesburg” on Twitter, just expecting to see some top news tweets. However, I was blown away by the thousands of tweets expressing

prayers and concerns for our city and university. There was one tweet that said “prayers for Hattiesburg, MS from Latvia.” Latvia is more than 5,000 miles across the world from Hattiesburg, by the way. It is incredible that someone that far knew about what was going on in a small Mississippi city just hours after it happened. That’s the power of social media.

Sure, social media gets a bad rap sometimes because of the girl who posts way too many selfies or the ridiculous people that passive aggressively tweet all their feelings, but the reality is that social media is the communication of the future.

It eliminates the six degrees of separation and allows communication with anyone anywhere in the world. Social media is changing the face of crisis communication, and I’m honored to be a part of this new wave of communication.

Eagles supporting Eagles: USM family reaches out Mary Margaret Halford Executive Editor On Saturday, Associate Athletic Director of Marketing and Communications Brent Jones sat in Reed Green Coliseum cheering on and supporting his beloved Golden Eagle basketball team. Just more than 24 hours later, the tables had turned and Southern Miss was stepping up to support Jones.

Jones and his wife, who is fivemonths pregnant, were in their home off Weathersby Road near Turtle Creek Mall when a tornado ripped through Hattiesburg, damaging hundreds of homes in its path.

“It was pretty scary, it took about 15 or 30 seconds to pass,” Jones said. “When I walked outside with my wife it looked like a bomb had gone off.”

Jones and his wife took cover in a bathtub while the storm raged outside, and he said they were luckily not injured.

Once the tornado had passed, Jones said he initially didn’t think his home was too damaged until the water started pouring in from the rains that followed.

“We’re lucky, we were able to pick and choose some of the stuff we wanted to get out, but some of our neighbors didn’t,” Jones said, adding that he was able to salvage his marriage certificate and some clothes that had been bought for the baby.

But for Jones, though the memories of the storm are vivid in his mind, the feeling of support he’s received from his Southern Miss

“The response has been overwhelming,” Jones said. “It’s amazing.”

Jones added that all his vehicles were destroyed in the storm, and with the help of a fellow Southern Miss staff member, he was able to get a temporary truck immediately.

“You find out who your friends are,” Jones said. “I’ve been over-

whelmed with support from fans, faculty, staff and alumni who just wanted to help out.”

In another athletic department office, volleyball head coach Abbey Sutherland said she was also overwhelmed with support when her car and home were also destroyed in Sunday’s tornado.

her car and the back of her house, and she had just gotten home from a weekend of recruiting in Dallas when the storm hit.

“I ran for cover in the middle of the house and tried to get my dogs into the bathroom,” Sutherland said. “Thankfully we found out the whole team was safe through text messages.”

Sutherland said she felt the same pride in her Southern Miss community following the disaster.

“I have absolutely felt a sense of community,” Sutherland said. “I honestly felt warm fuzzies when I saw 10 people helping me carry bits of a tree the day after the disaster. I would have been lost without help....

So many people have reached out.”

Basketball brings relief for Golden Eagle fans Kyle Smith Sports Editor

One day after losing their second conference game in a row, the Southern Miss men’s basketball team probably didn’t realize it would get worse before it got better. Instead of things getting worse on the court, things got worse off the south side of campus when an EF4 tornado ripped through the community on Sunday.

Things got better, at least for the moment, on Wednesday night as Southern Miss defeated Tulane 71-60- allowing Golden Eagles fans to celebrate for the first time since the disaster.

“That was more than a win.

That was more than a win after two losses,” graduate student Taylor McCrary said. “It shed a light of hope on hard core Southern Miss fans.”

New University President Dr. Rodney Bennett, who was introduced by Athletic Director Jeff Hammond, spoke at halftime of the game.

“Thank you to the students and volunteers who came out to restore campus on a day you didn’t have to come out,” Bennett said. “Of the 940 vol-

unteers, 292 were alumni and community members. The other 648 volunteers were students. We collected over 1500 bags of debris. Southern Miss is going to get back to normal because of your commitment to the campus. ” “Everyone who is here in the Southern Miss community and the Hattiesburg Communitythank you for helping return this campus to normal for tomorrow morning,” Bennett said.

The win gave Southern Miss, as well as the community, something to cling to.

“Whenever something bad happens, its always better if you have something to rally around in order to allow yourself to momentarily escape from the bad and make you smile. Athletics always offers you that,” Hammond said. “The game tonight, as well as the other athletic events this weekend, all allow people to rally around the university. It allows you take a mental and physical timeout to smile and laugh and enjoy something.”

Head coach Donnie Tyndall was appreciative for the 3,700 who were in attendance, and was thankful for the enthusi-

asm that the crowd showed.

“With a lot of different things going on, I am just thankful and appreciative for the fans who did come out,” Tyndall said. “The greatest thing was that the fans who were here were passionate.

That’s all I can ask for.

The basketball team will hit the road this weekend to take on ECU in Greenville, NC. The rest of the community, however, will continue to rebuild, restore, and recover.

As Bennett said, “Southern Miss to the top—that’s going to get us through this.”
