Mississippi’s Institutions of Higher Learning announced Friday that Dr. Rodney D. Bennett of the University of Georgia is the preferred candidate for USM president.

Bennett currently serves as UGA’s Vice President for Student Affairs, overseeing several units within the Division of Student Affairs including the Office of the Dean of Students, Leadership and Service and Greek Life and a student population of 34,000. He has helped raised thousands in funds to help student

The next step in the process will be conducted Wednesday and Thursday. Bennett will visit the Gulf Park Campus on Wednesday, followed by a visit to the Hattiesburg campus on Thursday.

A student forum is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Room 218 of the Thad Cochran Center, and all students are invited to attend.

On Thursday at 12:30 p.m., the Board of Trustees will meet on the Hattiesburg campus to vote whether Bennett will become the 10th president of the university. Prior to the vote, Thad Cochran Center, Room 218 will be reserved for faculty, students, and the campus and community for an open session with Bennett.

‘American Idol’ winner to headline Eaglepalooza

After months of anticipation and speculation, Southern Miss students learned Thursday that an American Idol winner and an R&B artist will be the two acts headlining Eaglepalooza 2013.

Elle Varner, who has been nominated for a 2013 Grammy, will perform before the most recent American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips, takes the stage.

“After everyone gave their input, we all agreed that whoever

we chose needed to reflect the student body,” one of the Eaglepalooza directors, senior business management major Christian Myrick, said. “We felt that these two artists would accomplish Phillip Phillips that goal.”

Eaglepalooza, which is set for April 5 in downtown Hattiesburg, was moved to the spring semester this year in an effort to receive more sponsorship money.

Iconic jazz musician comes to USM Chase Ladner Printz Writer

Southern Miss will be hosting a world-renowned New Orleans jazz musician on campus this week, and the event is free and open to all students.

Doreen Ketchens, who has been called a “musical legend” by many, will be hosting the concert tonight at 6:30 in the Thad Cochran Center Ballroom 1.

The event will kick off with an interactive workshop and lead into

a concert in which Ketchens will demonstrate her famed jazz clarinet skills that often can be heard on the corner of St. Peter’s and Royal St. in the heart of New Orleans.

“She seems very unusual to me as the clarinet is not a common jazz instrument today,” said Dr. Joseph Brumbeloe, professor of Music Theory. “It is a throwback to an older New Orleans.”

Ketchens’, also known as the “Clarinet Queen” has shared her bit of an old New Orleans with seven different countries and four different Presidents. When back

home in the Big Easy she keeps to her roots teaching students of all ages and skill the intricacies of jazz, as well as maintaining her presence in the city and on occasion cooking for her fans.

“New Orleans is different from other cities,” said Brumbeloe, “There is a maintenance of tradition.”

The event itself was put together with the help of Dr. Edward Hafer, professor of Musicology. “In the fall I take the Music History Honors class to New Orleans,” said Hafer, “and part of that trip is seeing Doreen play.”

Despite her global scale, she proved very approachable. “I said hey would you be interested in coming here?” asked Hafer. “And she was.”

After agreeing, Ketchens came with a condition. She wanted to hold an interactive workshop before the actual concert. Insight into this segment of the event can be found on Ketchen’s official website.

“Our mission is to educate through interacting with our audiences. The workshops are jam packed with information through demonstration of Jazz Funerals,

made up of alumni, faculty and staff, students and community members, assisted the search, and IHL Board of Trustees President Ed Blakeslee said there were significant reasons to seek input and involvement from so many constituents groups.

“As a board selecting the leaders of our state’s institutions of higher learning, it is a very important job and probably the most important job we do as a board,” Blakeslee said.

“We understand the importance of leadership. Picking the right leader for a university includes involving and listening the campus community. The board feels the process has worked as it should.”

One alumni representative from the board Lou Ann Poynter thinks Bennett was undeniably the right choice. “We’re deeply committed to the success of The University of Southern Mississippi,” Poynter said.

“All of the candidates interviewed

were accomplished and abled educators, however, one candidate clearly rose above the others to us.

I’m confident they [the Southern Miss body] will be as pleased with him as I am.”

Bennett attended Middle Tennessee State University, where he earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees. Following his time at MTSU, Bennett earned his Doctor of Education degree from Tennessee State University.

ASU promotes students supporting students Arielle Edwards Printz Writer Students at universities everywhere have a tendency to get overwhelmed, and an organization at Southern Miss got its start to help support students when they need a little affirmation.

The Adventist Student Union is a Christian student organization that was formed to provide hope and comfort to students, no matter what they have going on.

Judy Reinshagen, a senior biological sciences major, said the organization is there to provide relief from the stresses of the academic life.

“By providing Christian friendship, spiritual encouragement and healthy food while having uplifting music and practical discussions,” Reinshagen said. “Someone who attends an ASU event is guaranteed to leave with a renewed heart, spirit and mind.”

The group aims to provide students with a foundation in sound doctrine from the Bible and support them as they strive to maintain a relationship with God. “Especially when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel,” Reinshagen said.

Promoting a healthy lifestyle is also a key part in this organization. Devotionals are held every Thursday at Danforth Chapel at 7:30 p.m., with refreshments at 7 p.m. Lasting no longer than an hour, these devotionals are titled, “Come AS U Are.”

Tonight will be the final night of the “Hope for All” seminar, which is a series of nights that will reveal God’s plan for the world and for the lives of His followers. This seminar will be held at Bennett Auditorium at 7 p.m.

“Experience, encouraging and practical Christian seminars geared towards university students, Hattiesburg community members and people from surrounding cities,” Reinshagen said. “Everything listed will be free, including childcare and admission.”

ASU plans to continue the seminar with Bible studies and devotionals on Saturdays at 1 p.m. in Honors Hall in the Union beginning this weekend.

“The free food provided is very tasteful and on many oc-

casions is Brazilian influenced,” Reinshagen said. “Plus, there are always delicious vegan and vegetarian options.”

In addition to the devotionals and seminars, ASU is active in community service.

“We sing Christian songs at local nursing homes, assisted living centers and hospitals,” Reinshagen said.”

Beyonce dazzles during halftime show Caitlin Seale Printz Writer After a series of mediocre Super Bowl halftime performances, Beyonce showed up with a fast-paced, dance driven performance that wowed viewers. One of the most impressive aspects of the performance was the fact that she was obviously singing live. The singer took breaks from shaking what her momma gave her to belt out some impressive runs to many of her hit songs.

After so much controversy surrounding her choice to use a prerecorded track for the National Anthem at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, there was doubt surrounding her halftime performance at this year’s Super Bowl. However, the pop superstar started the performance off with an acapella rendition of her song “Love on Top.” Then, the song segwayed into “Crazy in Love.” The only way that song could have been any better would have been a surprise guest performance from her hubby, Jay Z, but unfortunately, all the audience got from the rap artist was a prerecorded track.

About midway through, Beyonce reunited with her former band Destiny’s Child when she welcomed Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams to the stage. The band sang their chart toppers “Bootylicious” and “Independent Woman” to an ecstatic crowd at the Mercedes-Benz

Superdome. The band then did a rendition of Beyonce’s hit, “Single Ladies,” complete with the dance moves that have become so iconic with the song. Although short and sweet, the on-stage reunion between the three women was a highlight of the performance.

The singer and her group of talented backup dancers were constantly moving around the stage to crazy impressive dance numbers which created a visually stimulating performance. Along with the impressive moves, the special effects were mind blowing. The stage created a sort of Beyonce kaleidoscope, and holograms of the singer joined the singer as backup dancers during a few numbers.

The singer strutted her stuff across the stage in above-the-knee leather boots and a leather mini dress. It is hard to believe she is 31 years old and a new mother.

Beyonce closed the show with a version of the song “Halo.” The special effects for the performance were not over yet.

“Everybody, I want to feel your energy,” the singer said, to which audience members, who were equipped with blue finger flashlights, waved their hands in the air to the song creating a magical effect.

The 12-minute halftime performance was a welcomed change from the performances of past artists such as Madonna, The Who and Prince.

Honestly, though, it’s Beyonce. What else did you expect?

Wynde Fitts, Assistant Dean of Students, said last year’s event drew a crowd of about 5,000.

“I’m very proud of the work our team of Eaglepalooza directors have put into the event,” Fitts said.

Myrick said he’s hoping for a crowd larger than that this year.

“We want to be practical, but we are expecting a larger crowd this year based on the feedback and these artists’ popularity,” Myrick said.

He added that SGA saw an outpouring of positive reactions when the headliners were announced Thursday afternoon.

“We’ve been fortunate to have received much positive feedback.

While we have received some negative feedback, we are continuing to do our best to make this year’s show the best it can be for the student body,” Myrick said.

“I’m happy that a new and up-

coming artist is coming to Hattiesburg,” said Robby Smith, a junior from Mobile, Ala. and fan of Phillip Phillips. “I know with such a popular name, we will bring people that normally wouldn’t come for the event.”

Phillips won the 11th season of American Idol last year, debuting his freshman album “The World from the Side of the Moon.” It debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, with sales of 169,000 copies. Phillips describes his music as a jazz, rock alternative sound.

Elle Varner got her big music break signing deal with MBK/JRCA Records and Sony Music in 2009. Varner’s debut album “Perfectly Imperfect” debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Varner has been nominated for the Grammy’s “Best R&B Song” in 2012.

“I’m thankful to be a part of an incredible team to help make this event successful,” Myrick said. “Anyone who doesn’t attend will miss out on a very fun, memorable night.”

Top 5 commercials from Super Bowl XLVII has been in the Toyota business my entire life.

Rachel Beech Printz Writer Some might argue that Sunday’s Super Bowl commercials were the best to date. Audi’s Prom commercial had viewers standing up cheering for the underdog who kissed the prom queen, and the Dodge Ram commercial had viewers wiping away tears at the heartfelt voice over at its simple, yet powerful message.

Here is a list of Super Bowl XLVII’s best commercials:

Many will argue the Dodge Ram commercial with the farmer focus was silly, but, the riveting voice of Paul Harvey aside, the raw still photographs that were captured for the commercial will be seared into my memory forever. The colorful, honest portrayal of the life of a farmer was painted in such a way that could not have been described with overly sexualized women or talking babies.

The soothing, yet powerful, voice of Stevie Knicks ricocheted over the Americanaesque video of a man and his horse. This combination made for a perfect depiction of what truly defines brotherhood. I thought it was powerful because of its city/home life feel.

Taco Bell—“Viva Young” This commercial was hands down my personal favorite, mostly because I love old people and Taco Bell. Other than that, I thought it was brilliant how Taco Bell took the lifestyle of today’s youth into consideration while putting the elderly people in charge. Hilarious scenes of old couples making

hall to watch the game with his buddies. She asked, ever so innocently, “Daddy, will you play princesses with me?” After her father declined her precious invitation, she offered him a bag of Doritos. A short time later, his friends showed up and caught him gallivanting around his daughter’s room in a dress and full makeup with a bag of Doritos in hand. It did not take long before his friends decided to join in. When his wife came home and saw what was going on, she incredulously noticed one of the men had on her wedding dress.

Audi—“Prom” When a senior in high school is disappointed that he does not have a date to the prom, his dad tosses his son the keys to his new Audi. The boy, now confident and ready for prom, pulls up in the Audi, walks through the double doors to the gymnasium and makes a beeline to the prom queen, who is dancing with her sweetheart. He then takes her by the nape of her neck and lays a huge kiss on her right before getting socked in the face by the prom queen’s boyfriend.

Legendary USM coach dies Mary Margaret Halford Executive Editor An iconic figure in the history of Southern Miss athletics died early Monday morning at the age of 81.

P.W. Underwood, who spent time as a Southern Miss football tackle and guard in the 1950s, an assistant coach and finally as a head coach in the 1960s and 70s, was nicknamed “Bear” and is remembered by the athletic department as a talented and respected Golden Eagle.

Underwood was the head coach of Southern Miss for six seasons, going 31-32-1 overall.

His most notable win was at Ole Miss, when the Eagles beat the No. 4 ranked Rebels 30-14.

Many of Underwood’s former Southern Miss players have continued to be active with the university, including Athletic Director Jeff Hammond.

“He gave each of us our start on life which began the day we arrived to USM,” Hammond said.

“He brought us to USM to teach more than just football; he taught character and the moral courage to always do the right thing.”

Underwood came to Southern Miss as a collegiate in 1954 after a few years in the United States Army and one at Mississippi State, and he saw action in all three seasons that he was eligible to play, starting the majority of the games he played in.

In 1954, Underwood was part of the 6-4 team as an offensive lineman and even started a few games.

He solidified himself in the starting lineup as a guard in 1955, earning a reputation as one of the hardest hitting players in all of college football. The 1955 team went 9-1.

His senior season was spent playing offensive tackle, and Underwood helped lead to the

Southerners to a 7-2-1 record and a spot in the Tangerine Bowl against West Texas State.

After his collegiate playing days were over, Underwood spent a few years in Canada playing in the CFL for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

He would soon return to his alma mater as a coach.

Underwood spent the 19631966 seasons as an assistant under coach Thad “Pie” Vann, leading one of the most feared defenses in the country. After a brief stint as an assistant coach at Tennessee, Underwood would return to Southern Miss again in 1969— this time as the head coach.

He is a member of the charter class of the M-Club Hall of Fame into which he was inducted in 1965, as well as the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in which he was inducted in 1986.

Underwood is survived by two sons, Phil and George.

“He was a mentor, father-figure, friend and most important a man we loved and trusted,” Hammond said. “We will never forget this man who for so many was larger than life. It was the honor of a lifetime to have known him.”

Watson has big day on his birthday

Southern Miss swept the season series from UAB for the first time since 2007 behind the almost perfect day by point guard Neil Watson.

Watson, who also turned 22 on Saturday, was a missed free throw away from a perfect shooting night for the Eagles who defeated the Blazers by a score of 79-75.

Watson shot 7-7 from the field including 6-6 from three point land and added 4-5 free throws for his season high of 24 points. Along with 16 points and 10 rebounds, including a Sportcenter Top-10 play, from forward Michael Craig, Southern Miss was able to survive several late runs by the Blazers for their 18th win of the season.

“Any win on the road is great,” said Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall. “That was a battle.

We could have crumbled but we just stayed the course. We made big shot after big shot. I’m very proud of my team.”

The second half was a one of runs.

After UAB cut the USM lead to four with a 7-0 run, USM went on their own 7-0 run. Half way through the second half, UAB went on a 7-2 run to cut the Eagles’ lead down to five before slowly chipping away and whittling it down to two points with 1:49 left in the game.

Coming out of a time out, the two teams traded three-point baskets before guard Jerrold Brooks found Craig open for a layup to push the Eagles lead to four with 40 seconds left. A turnover and free throws iced the game for the Golden Eagles.

their 10 game winning streak on the line when they travel to UCF on Wednesday before returning home for a battle with the just-as-hot Memphis Tigers on Saturday.

Saturday’s game will test Southern Miss’ 23-game home winning streak. Students will need to pick up a wristband from the Student Eagles Club or the Ticket Office starting Wednesday in order to get into the Memphis game this weekend.

Sports in Brief Track and Field The USM track and field teams competed at the Meyo Invitational this past weekend in South Bend, Ind. The team turned in 4 top ten finishes at the meet. Robert Collingwood placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 17.43 meters. His brother Richard finished sixth place in the shot put with a seasons-best mark of 16.91 meters. Tamarra Bowie recorded a sixth place finish in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 12.33 meters, and Rachel Polk finished ninth in the women’s shot put with a mark of 14.49 meters.

Elbert Rogers (48.64) and Derrick Johnson (49.20) also recorded seasons-best performances in the 400 meters.

On the women’s side, Brianna Rayfield and Paige Jones also recorded season’s best performances.

Rayfield recorded a time of 25.63 in the 200-meter dash, while Jones ran the 400 meters in 58.13.

The team returns to action this Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. at the Vulcan Invite.

Men’s Tennis The men’s tennis team traveled to Las Vegas, Nev. over the weekend to compete. The team went 2-1, with wins over UC Riverside and New Mexico State, while dropping the opening match to UNLV. The opening match of the tournament put the Eagles up against host UNLV. After UNLV captured the point in doubles play, USM struggled to regain momentum. Andrew Goodwin won his match (6-4, 4-6, 1-2 retired), as did Vasco Valverde (75, 4-6, 6-4), but the Eagles would not win another point as they fell 4-2.

The Eagles got back on the right track on Saturday, sweeping UC Riverside 4-0. USM captured the point in doubles before Goodwin (60, 6-1), Matthew Frost (6-2, 6-1), and Valverde (6-2, 6-3) all defeated their opponents. The rest of the games were suspended.

The final match of the tournament was against New Mexico State. After taking the point in doubles, USM would gain points from Valverde (63, 6-2) and Brad Marriott (6-4, 6-4).

New Mexico State kept it competitive, however, as Frost and Feldmann both dropped their games. Goodwin (7-6, 7-5) came through for the Eagles, though, as his victory secured the match 4-2 for USM.
