election, from 1 Rachel Beech Printz Writer President Barack Obama was elected to a second term as President of the United States Tuesday night, and the youth vote was one of the biggest factors in deciding America’s fate.

Although the fate of the nation’s future appeared to be in the hands of the baby boomers, that presumption was proven wrong when election results came pouring in.

The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), an independent youth research organization at Tufts University, announced Wednesday that 22 to 23 million

youth voters, or approximately 49 percent of Americans in this age range, cast their votes in yesterday’s presidential election.

Peter Levine, director of CIRCLE, said the youth is committed and energized to vote in a press release Tuesday.

“Youth turnout of around 50 [percent] is the ‘new normal’ for presidential elections,” Levine said.

“Considering that there are 46 million people between 18 and 29, this level of turnout makes them an essential political bloc.”

Obama won the majority of young voters, acquiring 60 percent of votes from the 18-25 age demographic, according to national exit polls.

Levine also talked about the im-

pact young people have in politics.

“The role young people would play during this election has been a major question in American politics for over a year, and it seems the answer is that they have been as big a force at the polls in 2012 as in 2008,” Levine said.

University of Southern Mississippi political science professor Marija Bekafigo weighed in with remarks about the turnout.

“I kept up with the polls, so I was not surprised by the turnout,” Bekafigo said. “The Mississippi turnout for Obama was higher than any of the other southern states, but that didn’t necessarily surprise me.”

Bekafigo also noted that Obama’s next term would give him time to focus more on foreign policy than

on domestic policy.

“It’s about compromise and sitting down and talking to one another,” Bekafigo said.

Mitt Romney released a heartfelt concession speech shortly after learning that Obama would be, once again, the President of the United States.

“I wish all of them well, particularly the president, the first lady and their daughters,” Romney said.

Romney went on to say, “I ran for office because I’m concerned for America. Like so many of you, Paul and I have left everything on the field. We have given our all to this campaign.”

After the winner was announced, Obama delivered an acceptance speech that sent shock-waves

through media outlets, moving people such as the prime minister of Malaysia to tweet, “Congratulations @BarackObama on being elected to a 2nd term.”

Amidst a roaring crowd donning red, white and blue T-shirts with Obama’s “Forward” campaign slogan, the President graciously accepted his second term.

“We are greater than the sum of our individual ambitions, and we remain more than a collection of red states and blue states, we are and forever will be the United States of America, and together with your help and God’s grace we will continue to journey forward and remind the world what it is to live in the greatest nation on earth,” Obama said.

Greeks to Pedal for Push America Arielle Edwards Printz Writer The Theta Alpha chapter of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at the University of Southern Mississippi will host their annual fundraiser, Pedal for Push, benefitting Push America, tomorrow. This is an event in which new members, or associate class members, and a few active members will be ride stationary bikes for 24 hours. The event will take place Friday at Caliente Grille. Proceeds will benefit Push America.

Push America is a non-profit organization that was founded by the men of Pi Kappa Phi in 1977 and is the fraternity’s national philanthropy. Its mission is to build leaders of tomorrow by serving people

with disabilities today. Members of the fraternity have raised almost $13 million in support of this, and they have donated several man-hours to repair facilities that serve people with disabilities across the country.

Associate class Push America chair Jeffrey George encouraged people to stop by and enjoy Caliente’s Mexican cuisine.

“Ten percent of the proceeds will benefit Push America,” George said.

“People should attend in order to see how important Push America is to Pi Kapp and also to help raise funds for those with disabilities.”

George said people should also attend to socialize with the members of Pi Kappa Phi and enjoy the band that will be playing Friday night.

Associate member James Hall said events like this help raise awareness for Push America.

“We are cycling on three stationary bikes for a period of 24 hours in order to raise awareness,” Hall said.

“It is representative of the Journey of Hope, which is Push America’s national event where hundreds of people ride bicycles across the country.”

Last summer, four members of the Theta Alpha chapter took the 3,000-mile bike trip across America.

“There is no greater feeling than to support someone in need,” Hall said.

Fraternity president Cully Leist hopes many people come out and support Push America.

“It benefits a wonderful organization that was founded to help people with disabilities,” Leist said.

“We hope to get as much support as we can.”

Favre aids in local book drive Rachel Beech Printz Writer Deanna Favre, wife of former NFL player and Southern Miss standout Brett Favre, and the Rev. Tommy Conway of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of Hattiesburg have teamed up to ensure that children in Mississippi have happy holidays this season.

Friends of University Libraries, in conjunction with the Favre 4 Hope Foundation, is launching its second annual “Give a Child a New Book Day.” With assistance from businesses, organizations and civic/ community groups, the books donated and collected will be given to the Salvation Army to distribute to children in Forrest, Lamar, Harrison and Jackson counties who need a brighter holiday season.

toy giveaways. Conway and Favre hope to reach their goal of collecting 5,000 books by getting the community involved.

“Last year, we gave away 3,000 books,” Conway said.

“This year, we want to bump that number up to 5,000.”

include the Hattiesburg Women’s Pavilion, Southern Bone and Joint Specialists, Forrest General Hospital, Wesley Medical Center, and several other groups in the Pine Belt area.

Books will be distributed on Dec. 18. The last day to donate is Dec. 7.

“Unless the book looks brand

new, we are only accepting books that are new,” Conway said. “This might be the only new thing these children ever receive.”

Book donations are encouraged to be from the infant to 12-year-old age range, but books for children ages 13 through 15 are accepted.

“For many families who face financial challenges, buying books

is not a priority,” Favre, an avid biography reader, said. “Reading is such a key element of the education process, so we need to encourage children to read more. I’m excited to be a part of this effort.”

Junior English licensure major Tessa Willoughby has also been involved in this effort.

“It is my responsibility to distribute boxes,” Willoughby said.

“Each week when they become full, we pick them up and give them to the library to sort.

“I would love for us to even reach higher than five thousand books. It would be phenomenal.

As a future teacher, there’s nothing more important than reading.

It affects every single facet of life.

New books will make the kids feel important instead of receiving something used.”

Books can be dropped off on campus and at My Imagination Station, Main Street Books, Southern Pine Electric Power Association, and St. Thomas.

The Student Government Association recently passed two Senate resolutions this semester, each with completely different intentions.

The first resolution honors Martha Saunders and her commitment to the university during her time as the president of the University of Southern Mississippi, while the second is a plan to implement one-way traffic flow in the parking garage, which will include sign installation in hopes of making the parking garage safer.

The resolution honoring Saunders thanks the university’s ninth and first female president for her service during the five years of her presidency, along with her current service to the university.

Yolanda Cruz, a senate representative for the College of Arts and Letters and sophomore news editorial journalism major, said the decision to honor Saunders through a resolution was an easy one.

“The SGA Senate wanted to create a resolution to honor Dr. Martha Saunders because she did so much for the university during her time as president, and we felt this should not go unnoticed,” Cruz said.

A portion of the resolution states, “Whereas, Dr. Saunders has exhibited her passion for the growth and advancement of the University of

Southern Mississippi.”

Saunders was inaugurated as university president in 2007. A two-time Silver Anvil Award Winner in Public Relations, she oversaw $225 million in new building projects on campus.

The second resolution is that of a completely different nature. Commuters, residents, faculty and staff are all frequent users of the parking garage located on campus near 4th Street. The garage has experienced cumbersome traffic flow and unclear directions. According to the second resolution passed by SGA, the two-way flow of traffic and the lack of proper signage in the parking garage will be addressed through signage that will help create a one-way traffic flow pattern throughout the structure.

Cruz said she is proud to be part of an organization, like the SGA Senate, that takes the time to work on a resolution to recognize a campus leader and make campus a safer place.

“As a student, I am very pleased that we have passed these resolutions,” Cruz said. “It shows that a person’s hard work will not go unnoticed and no one can disagree with making the campus a safer place to drive. It also pleases me as a senator because it shows we are being productive and really working for the students.”

Voodoo Fest 2012 rocks NOLA Hannah Jones Managing Editor

Amongst a landscape of endless green space dotted with mosscovered oaks, Voodoo Music Experience 2012 officially came to a close in New Orleans’s City Park after a pre-Halloween weekend jam-packed with all-star music acts, local art and The Crescent City’s finest cuisine.

A bevy of musical artists such as The Avett Brothers, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Gary Clark Jr., Metallica and Jack White entertained festival-goers amidst a brisk autumn chill that settled over City Park.

From early morning to late night, Voodoo showcased attendees costumed in fishnets, corsets, bunny suits, rainbow tutus, Smurf-inspired body paint, spandex and any form of clothing that is mildly unsettling.

Voodoo packed a serious punch, kicking off Friday’s schedule with an array of crowd favorites. During the afternoon, the festival’s smaller stages, Preservation Hall and the WWOZ/Bud Light Stage, offered audiences an intimate concert experience with indie bands such as Brooklynbased band Andy Suzuki and The Method. Suzuki’s soulful ballads and velvet falsetto, in tune with The Method’s instrumentation of

violin and djembe, entertained early-afternoon attendees.

Blues-rock crooner Gary Clark, Jr. drew in the masses for his five o’clock show at Le Ritual, playing hits such as “Bright Lights” and “Don’t Owe You a Thang.”

As the sun set over The Big Easy, the Austin native played a poised set that made for a powerful, entertaining live show for the sea of swaying fans sprawled out on blankets across City Park’s lawn.

Folk mega stars The Avett Brothers took the stage next, playing an animated, energy-fueled concert, arguably one of the best shows of the weekend. Seth and Scott played an array of tunes from their folk-tastic discography such as “Kick Drum Heart” but primarily performed tracks off their most recent album, “The Carpenter.” The Avetts even treated the crowd with their own acoustic rendition of the cult classic Neutral Milk Hotel song “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,” which concluded with a welldeserved explosion of cheers and applause from the audience.

Rock’n’roll legend and Voodoo headliner Neil Young wrapped up Friday night’s festivities with a jam session complete with Crazy Horse members Frank “Poncho” Sampedro and Billy Talbot. Young and Crazy Horse opened their two-hour set with “Love and Only Love,” from the

Sunday marked the last day of Voodoo, but thanks to the festival’s last headliners, all was not lost. Skrillex utilized a heap of smoke and pyrotechnics for his Sunday night show, pumping up electronic music fans on the Le Plur/Red Bulletin stage.

Coheed and Cambria, dubbed

by Rolling Stone as “sci-fi art metal,” rocked the main stage, complete with front man Claudio Sanchez’s mane of wiry curls flowing in the wind.

White Stripes, Dead Weather and Raconteurs front man and eccentric rock god Jack White took the stage for the festival’s closing act with two spotlights hanging over Le Ritual, looming over his band adorned in dark suits, complementing the overall black and blue color scheme. White played a range of songs from his various musical projects such as The White Stripes’ hit “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” accented with upright piano, pedal steel and mandolin. White channeled a Southern rock vibe with a rendition of “Fell In Love With a Girl” and shifted to a bluesy soulful timbre with “Ball and Biscuit.” Introducing the set closer, mega hit “Seven Nation Army,” White was overtaken by shouts, cheers and applause from an elated crowd.

For 15 years, Voodoo Music Experience has hosted a grabbag of music acts appealing to a range of concertgoers. Displaying talented musicianship, energetic crowds and an air of fun that remains true to festival form, one could call Voodoo Music Experience just another day in NOLA.

After enduring months of grueling campaigns, the people of the United States have spoken, and they have re-elected President Barack Obama for a second term as commander-in-chief.

Though electing a new president seems to be a simple cutand-dry process after 236 years, it’s not. If you have a presence on any type of social media website — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. — you probably realized that all of your friends earned degrees in political science overnight.

Self-declared political genius Democrats flooded Twitter with song lyrics such as, “We got 99 problems, but Mitt ain’t one,” and overused comments such as, “Ann Romney is secretly happy she doesn’t have to move into a smaller house.” On the other side of the obnoxious know-it-all spectrum, Republicans spent their election night posting a bounty of threats to move to Canada (a country with socialized healthcare and legalized same-sex marriage, mind you) and claiming apocalyptic doomsday predictions for the

next four years.

There are several things that make America stand out among other countries, and one of our biggest freedoms is that we have the right to voice our opinions, particularly about our government. Thanks to the Internet, we can say what we want, when we want, to whom we want. In turn, such opinions are broadcast for a catalogue of Facebook friends to analyze.

For a state like Mississippi, where supporters of Romney made up the majority of voters, it’s not hard to believe people were disappointed in the outcome of the election. What’s even more disappointing than your candidate not winning, however, is the total lack of respect people have shown for the elected leader of this great nation.

Like it or not, Barack Obama is your president for the next four years. If you voted for him, congratulations and thanks for your participation in the election. If you voted for Romney, though the election didn’t turn out how

you hoped, you should feel good knowing that you did your part in voicing your opinion in a way that actually matters. For those of you who didn’t vote, if you are too lazy to have an opinion in the ballot boxes, what makes you think you deserve to preach on Twitter or Facebook?

Part of being an American is voicing your opinion, but another part of being an American is standing united in respect of your country and elected officials. There’s a great saying that’s been around since 1768, “United we stand; divided we fall.” No matter what your opinion was on Tuesday, it’s time to move forward for the betterment of America.

Though Southern Miss saw its fair share of dissent Tuesday night via social networks, it could have been worse... For once, we were not the Mississippi university that made national headlines for racist activity.

Here’s looking at you, Ole Miss.

Mustangs will look for revenge on Saturday Ben Welch Printz Writer SMU was shut down by a Nasty Bunch like performance from the Southern Miss defense last year. The Mustangs visited The Rock last year and was held to only three points on a night in which they turned it over twice and converted only four of thirteen third down tries.

Southern Miss won last year’s homecoming contest 27-3.

SMU Head Football Coach June Jones will be looking for a better output from his offense this year when SMU hosts the Eagles in Dallas. The Mustangs enter the game scoring 30 points a game, while the Eagles’ defense has been vulnerable, allowing 38 points a game.

SMU enters the game 4-5 on the season with three losses coming from teams playing in automatic qualifying conferences. Last week, the Mustangs fell to the UCF Knights on the road 42-17. UCF is the only common opponent for the Eagles and the Mustangs, and both fell to the Knights.

The Mustangs boast a top50 passing attack, but the key to their famed run and shoot offense is senior running back Zach Line. Line averages over 100 yards rushing per game, and, with more than 60 yards rushing on Saturday, will pass the 1,000 yard mark on the season. Line ranks second in school history behind the Eric Dickerson with 3,847 career rushing yards.

a potent UAB passing attack last week by sacking quarterback Austin Brown five times.

However, they allowed running back Darrin Reaves to run for a season-high 223 yards and two touchdowns, a bad omen when facing a running back like Line this week.

The Southern Miss offense has also struggled this season.

The Eagles will turn once again to freshman quarterback Anthony Alford to take the reins

of the offense. Southern Miss is only scoring 19 points a game, which ranks 112th in the nation and only averages 147 yards passing, which is good enough for 117th in the nation.

In seven games, Alford is completing 42.6% of his passes for 550 yards, no passing touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Eagles will need more from the arm of Alford this week, as SMU is the 33rd best team defending the run.

“He’s not pulling the trigger because the route is not there,” Southern Miss Head Coach Ellis Johnson said. “There are a lot of things contributing to the passing game other than the play of the quarterback. It’s got to improve, but he’s a true freshman. I think he’ll get better. He’s been on a roller coaster ride. There hasn’t been good, steady improvement.”

The team will be without quarterback Arsenio Favor and

running back Desmond Johnson, as both players were suspended for one game for a violation of team rules.

Southern Miss is in search of their first win of the season this weekend. The Eagles own a 3-0 record all-time against the Mustangs. This will be the last time the two teams will face each other for a while due to SMU’s move to the Big East next season.

Men’s basketball topples Charleston 72-58 After getting off to a sluggish start, the Southern Miss men’s basketball team proved to be too powerful for Division-II foe Charleston. The Golden Eagles won 72-58 in the final exhibition contest of the year.

Jerrold Brooks led Southern Miss with 16 points, and Jonathan Mills and Daveon Boardingham each had 10 points. Boardingham narrowly missed a double-double and had nine rebounds for the Eagles.

Head coach Donnie Tyndall was not enthusiastic about his team’s energy level throughout the game.

“We held them to a decent defensive field goal percentage and forced them into 17 turnovers, but for the most part our energy level was good, but not great,” Tyndall said.

Regular season play begins this Saturday when the Eagles host Western Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum.
