Instructor awarded national honor Michelle Holowach Printz Writer History was made at the University of Southern Mississippi September 29 when one of its own faculty members was named Honorary Consul to France and presented three WWII veterans with the Legion of Honor, the highest decoration in France. Sponsored by L’Association Francaise de USM, the ceremony held in the Thad Cochran ballrooms on Thursday recognized Keltoum Rowland, a French instructor at USM, as Missisppi’s first Honorary Consul to France. Her first duty as Consul was to host an event in which three WWII Veterans received the Legion of Honor. “France wants to show its gratitude to these men who risked everything to liberate my country,” Rowland said. Century Park receives LEED Gold certification Leighanne Lockhart Printz Writer The University of Southern Mississippi’s newest residence halls have recently received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification, a top honor for environmentally friendly buildings. The Century Park residential complex opened in the fall of 2010. It was designed with the intention to be a state-of-the-art residence hall with systems installed that respect the environment and provide a healthy liv-

ing and learning environment for students. LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
