HEY LOST FREQUENCIES, WHAT AN HONOUR IT IS TO CHAT WITH YOU! LET’S ‘DIVE’ STRAIGHT INTO IT (PUN INTENDED), SO YOUR LATEST TRACK WITH TOM GREGORY – DIVE, WOW!!! IT BRINGS SO MUCH ENERGY, POSITIVITY, AND HOPE! WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS RECORD?

Thank you! The response has been amazing so far from the fans, we reached over 13 million streams on Spotify alone already and the radio response has also been huge! I wanted to create something that has signature ‘Lost Frequencies’ elements, so I wanted to create something with a deeper and progressive melody, but also something that was in both the lanes of pop and dance music. Tom’s vocal delivery is also really raw on the track but adds a hopeful and passionate message to my production. I was super happy with the result and hope you guys love it too!

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH TOM AND HOW DID THE COLLABORATION COME ABOUT?

It was great to work with a songwriter like Tom, I knew about some of his releases such as ‘Fingertips’ that charted in Europe and his previous releases on labels like Kontor. I just loved his sound and we connected, the rest is history!

WE MUST TALK ABOUT THE VIDEO – IT’S SUPERB! YOU KNOW EVERY NOW AND THEN WHEN YOU HEAR OR WATCH SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME AND FEEL IT’S EXTRA SPECIAL, THIS SONG AND VIDEO REALLY DO SHINE, IT’S A COLLECTIVE MASTERPIECE. HOW MUCH INVOLVEMENT DID YOU HAVE WITH THE VIDEO AND HOW BIG IS THE TEAM BEHIND IT?

Thank you so much! We have a huge team, from my own personal input with my team, over to my label at SONY and design and branding elements, I have – and enjoy having – as much input as possible. With this era leading up to creating my new album, ‘All Stand Together’, I wanted to create striking and strong visuals, but also create something that wraps you up in this world alongside my music. The multi-city scenes almost seem slightly psychedelic and make viewers take a double look, it draws audiences in but also doesn’t detract from the original track, something I think worked hand in hand.

YOU’VE PLAYED ACROSS THE WORLD TO FANS IN VAST NUMBERS, AT VENUES MOST ARTISTS CAN ONLY DREAM OF PERFORMING AT. IS THERE A STAND-OUT GIG THAT YOU ENJOYED THE MOST?

I would say that every year I return to Tomorrowland, whether that is both on the main stage or curating my own arena, never gets old.

Tomorrowland is the biggest, best and one of the most famed festivals in the world, its insane production and world-class lineups are what make it so amazing – and it’s in my home country of Belgium! Maybe I’m biased but it really is the cherry on top of the cake.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM ‘ALL STAND TOGETHER’. CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH IT THE TRACKS, COLLABORATIONS, STYLE AND HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE FINISHED RECORD?

‘All Stand Together’ is a snapshot of where I’m at in my career right now.

This is the most self-assured album I’ve made so far and I think, especially older Lost Frequencies fans will notice, I still like to have a signature sound but the music I make has evolved into a new place.

I loved working with vocalists like Zak Abel who really brought a rich vocal to the album’s opening track, that I then brought these unexpected synth lines and piano chords into, appealing to pop and electronic music fans alike. Then, on the other hand, working with guys like my buddy Netsky again was super cool, showing another side to my musical personality with these double-time beats and drum n bass feel.

As I said, ‘All Stand Together’ really is a snapshot of where I am at musically right now and I’m so happy with the response already, so far.

I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A DIFFICULT QUESTION TO ANSWER, BUT WHO DID YOU MOST ENJOY COLLABORATING WITH, AND DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SONG FROM THE ALBUM (MAYBE ONE WHICH HAS A DEEPER CONNECTION WITH YOU)?

I don’t have a favourite collaborator or song per se, but ‘Where Are You Now’ has a special place in my heart. When Calum Scott and I released it in the summer of 2021, it grew and grew and grew before it became Brit-nominated earlier this year. We hit #1 in charts across Europe, including the UK which was huge for me and to have that on the album is something I’m super proud of.

NOW THAT YOU’VE RELEASED YOUR THIRD ALBUM, DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU’VE BEEN CONSISTENTLY EVOLVING AS AN ARTIST? WHILE YOU’VE UNDOUBTEDLY ACHIEVED GLOBAL SUCCESS, I’M INTERESTED IN YOUR PERSONAL REFLECTIONS ON THIS RECORD COMPARED TO YOUR PREVIOUS WORK...

Yes, for sure! I touched on this a little earlier but I think fans both old and new will sense my development in sound. I worked with new collaborators I’ve never worked with before, and I especially enjoyed playing with production in between both these electronic and pop worlds, bringing in progressive and deeper elements, but also bringing in more laid-back house sounds, brighter, feel-good components. I think fans will see nods to my signature sounds, like on ‘The Feeling’, the vocal takes on an almost country music-style tone that is backed by guitar lines, percussive elements and so on; so it’s definitely a snapshot of this new chapter, for me.

AS YOU GROW AS AN ARTIST, DO YOUR EXPECTATIONS CHANGE IN TERMS OF NEW RELEASES?

No, not for me. I always, only, release tracks that I’m really proud of and that I’m excited to share with the world. I think if I was just trying to chase hits or make tracks and records just to appeal to a certain demographic or audience, then that wouldn’t be staying true to myself or my fans. I’m super fortunate that my fans are really supportive and have stayed with me throughout my career as I’ve grown as an artist, and that is all I could ever hope for!

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY KEY DECISIONS THAT YOU’VE MADE IN YOUR CAREER THAT HAVE PROPELLED YOU TO THE NEXT LEVEL?

Staying true to myself, for sure. My management team and label team all collectively really understand my vision and that is something I never take for granted. It takes an army to realise, all together, what I wanted to create with this next album and I couldn’t do that without my teams, as well as the support of my family and friends.

SO WE CAN TIME-STAMP THIS, CAN GIVE US 3 MAIN GOALS YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

1. I would love to play Glastonbury for the first time or return to Coachella.

2. It would be amazing to be nominated for a Grammy, one day!

3. I hope to just keep making music and making people happy, I wouldn’t be able to do this without the support of my fans and I’m grateful for that every day.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME LOST FREQUENCIES, IT’S BEEN A HUGE PRIVILEGE, CAN WE FINALLY ASK, WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 TIPS FOR STUDENTS WHO DREAM OF A MUSIC CAREER?

Thank you for having me! I would say it’s important to know what style of music you want to create, don’t get into the industry just because it seems ‘cool’ or ‘fun’, it’s a lot of hard work that can’t be faked. Passion is the most important thing. I’d also say that it doesn’t matter your background or equipment, there are a lot of tools online that can help you learn what you want, from production to songwriting and learning instruments. When I first started getting interested in producing, I watched a lot of YouTube videos and tutorials, you don’t need a huge studio or hundreds of pounds worth of equipment! Finally, believe in yourself and if you don’t try, you will never know.

BEN, FIRSTLY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME WE’RE REALLY EXCITED TO SPEAK WITH YOU! WOULD YOU MIND STARTING BY EXPLAINING HOW YOU FIRST BEGAN YOUR BUSINESS TOUCHING ON YOUR AMBITIONS AND VISION AT THE TIME?

At about 16 years old, I started going to the gym and absolutely fell in love with it. As well as building muscle, it gave me structure, routine and discipline. I was also quite into computing and web development, so I really quickly knew I wanted to do something that combined that and the gym. When I was going to the gym though, the clothes I was wearing didn’t fit how I wanted them to - they were either skin-tight or it looked like I was wearing my dad’s suit. I thought “why not wear something that me and my mates actually want to wear”. So, I saved up some money, bought a sewing machine and screen printer and with the help of my Mom and YouTube, I taught myself how to sew. We never started with global ambitions or anything like that. We had much more manageable goals. We actually started with dropshipping. Firstly, we just wanted to create a website. Then we wanted to create something that transacted, then it was a case of trying to make a profit. I clearly remember we sold something that had a £2 profit. We were dancing round the room like we had won the lottery. It’s all grown from there really.

HOW QUICKLY INTO STARTING GYMSHARK DID YOU REALISE YOU WERE ONTO SOMETHING HUGE, AND DID YOU HAVE TO ADAPT FROM YOUR ORIGINAL PLANS OR DID THINGS UNFOLD AS YOU EXPECTED THEM TO?

There was an expo they used to hold at the NEC in Birmingham (my hometown) every year – the Body Power Expo. I don’t know what compelled us, but we knew we had to be there. We emptied our bank account on two things – a little stand and to fly over some of the guys we admired on YouTube that we had sent some of our gear to. At the time, we were doing pretty well – turning over about £200 a day. When the doors opened, everyone flooded to the stand and other, much bigger players, were watching thinking “who the hell are these guys”. I went home after the event and switched the website off. When I switched it on again, we did about £30,000 in 30 minutes. It was right then that I knew we were onto something game-changing.

YOU’RE CLEARLY A VERY MOTIVATED PERSON, WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES YOU AND AS YOU HAVE PROGRESSED IN BUSINESS HAS YOUR MOTIVATION CHANGED?

My motivations have grown as I’ve got older. As I say, my first motivation was just to create something that I wanted to wear to the gym, then create a website that transacted. Now, my motivation is genuinely to create a brand that outlives all of us. I am dead set on making Gymshark one of the most iconic British brands of all time. And that hits me the moment I wake up and sets me on my way for the day! I also now have twin boys, so knowing I’m doing it for them is a real motivator too.

HOW DO YOU MAXIMISE YOUR OWN PRODUCTIVITY?

It may sound a bit obvious, but working out massively helps me with my own productivity. If I go a few days without getting a lift in, I do feel sluggish and things feel a lot tougher. It’s really important for me to do that. I think the gym has definitely become a place, especially for me, to work on both my physical AND mental health.

MOST START-UPS FAIL. WHAT 3 CHARACTERISTICS WOULD YOU SAY BEST PREPARE A PERSON/BUSINESS FOR SUCCESS?

The biggest one has to absolutely be to learn from failure. Many people don’t know this, but Gymshark was actually the seventh business I set up.

The previous six all failed, but I ensured I took learnings from each of them.

I’d also say to surround yourself with people that are better than you.

I’ve been fortunate to work in all areas of the business – product, brand, tech – and all the people I’ve worked with I’ve learned from. You don’t need to know it all.

Finally, I’d say resilience is key, both when things are going well and badly. When times are tough, you need to remind yourself why you are doing it and use that drive to turn it around. For me, it’s because it’s something I love. And when things are going well, it’s using that resilience to not rest on your laurels. Gymshark is successful, but we still have so much to achieve, so you won’t catch me putting my feet up any time soon.

TO GET TO YOUR LEVEL IN BUSINESS, HOW MUCH DO YOU HAVE TO KEEP LEARNING, AND CAN YOU TALK ABOUT ANY RISKY DECISIONS YOU’VE TAKEN IN BUSINESS, THAT HAVE LED TO YOUR SUCCESS?

You have to keep learning all the time. We’ve had to pivot, change strategy and learn from things that haven’t worked. And I don’t think that will ever change.

Well, I mentioned Body Power. That cleared us out and we obviously didn’t know what the outcome would be. We sometimes say here “zig when others zag”. We try to do things differently. Some might call that risky. For example, after a global pandemic and ongoing reports about the ‘death of the high street’, what did we decide to do? Open an 18,000-square-foot store on Regent Street in London. We recently celebrated its first anniversary and I’m delighted that it’s performed ahead of forecast.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN BUSINESS AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

Competition has got much fiercer. When we started, there weren’t really many dedicated fitness apparel brands around. Now we are seeing many more cropping up. And you’ve got to remember, back in 2012 when we founded Gymshark, we were the audience and community. I’d like to think we still are, but things naturally change. If someone were to ask me “what would worry you more, a massive company putting all their efforts into your area or the next 19-year-old in a garage with a sewing machine”, the answer is always the same. It’s the 19-year-old all day long.

We live and die by our product. We have to ensure we are continuing to create the best product out there and at a fair price point. And carry on staying so close to our community, listening to them, hearing them and reacting.

WE’VE NOT TOUCHED ON THE ACTUAL FITNESS ASPECT, YOU LOOK IN GREAT SHAPE, HOW OFTEN DO YOU WORK OUT AND WHAT IS YOUR TOP FITNESS TIP FOR STUDENTS?

I try to work out four times a week, as I said, both for my physical and mental health. I’d say my top tip (and I took this into business too) is that you get out what you put in. If you commit to going to the gym three times a week, you will see a difference over time. That consistency and routine is what makes all the difference.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2024?

We have an initiative called Gymshark 66 that we do with our community every year. Studies show that it takes 66 days to form a habit. So, we challenge our community to commit to something and keep it up for 66 days. It could be gym-related, getting 10,000 steps in, drinking two litres of water, anything really. I’m still working this out, but I know that I’m still dead set on making Gymshark the most iconic British brand of all time.

In Jamaica we have a big culture of amazing music. Different genres that came up through the years. Then when Dancehall hit I was 9-10 years old, it just blew me away. It spoke to me how my friends spoke to me.

It hooked me. At 15 years old I started to think maybe I’d be a producer.

At 17 years old I started writing rhymes and I’m like “I like this even better”. I stayed until about 24 years old, trying to hone my own craft and had a friend that was in the business. I slowly started to follow him to certain studios. So from high school, I was kinda getting into it and when I left high school I definitely dove into it more. It was a gradual process, just me being a fan at first, then thinking “Yo, I could do this”.

I think those first six years of me kinda developing my style/craft without anybody knowing, helped propel me, to give me a hard work ethic. I do owe it to the fans. People see that I try to put my all into the music – stay to the route but push the edges and those type of things – I think my fans really appreciate that from me.

When you do what you like for a living, whether it is very little pay, which sometimes it is for me. In terms of other artists who haven’t the stature of name that I do in the business, sometimes I do free things just to keep in the game. That’s probably another reason for longevity. Those things kinda help to keep me in that respect. But yeah, I don’t wanna stop!

Awesome bro! The whole vibe of the track for me is that it blends the old school Dancehall with the new and I think I’m the bridge in both cases.

Busta was a few years before me in terms of coming out with music and then I came on the scene and then Skillibeng, so it just made sense to me to bridge the gap and to match the riddim how it sounded. It sounded like the oldschool Dancehall but it sounded brand new as well. It made sense to me so big-up to Skilli the young veteran coming up and big-up to Busta Rhymes who is someone I’ve always looked up to in the business and is still doing his thing 30 years later. Wow. That’s because it’s a beautiful woman. And she got a beautiful voice. I was blessed enough to be able to work with her when she was not that huge in the business but I listen to people’s voice and definitely the image too, but her voice is amazing to me. I think that song was lukewarm at first because it was released in 2017, and just started to build up. Then during the pandemic, it got wider exposure, especially when she blew up. So I owe that a lot to her.

WHAT ABOUT ADVICE FOR ASPIRING MUSICIANS WHO WANT TO KICK-START A CAREER OR GET INTO MUSIC?

I would say go all for it. A lot of young artists – some with great talent, amazing talent and some with not. I like to tell people it’s 99% hard work in this business. You could have 1% talent and if you work hard at it, you could get noticed, you could get a song that people enjoy. I mean Baby Shark is not of great composition in terms of a mastermind piece of work, but everybody knows it (laughs). So yeah, keep at your work.

For me it all starts at the bottom, with the bassline, a good song, good music – work on those things, work on what you wanna say to your audience, be true to that and good luck!

Yeah, I have been working on a bag of stuff! I’m hoping to drop an album sometime in 2024, it might be in the summer. Even though these aren’t album-driven times, I still try to work towards an album. I think that an album encapsulates that time period whenever you started to work on it and whenever it was released. So I’m working on stuff like that. Early in the year, we’re looking to come back to the UK and Europe and do that.

I got a couple of Afrobeat songs coming out. I’m on a couple of remixes and stuff so people can listen out for that. The Dancehall world, the Reggaeton world, and the Afrobeat world is such familiar music to me and people hola at me all the time, so look out for stuff in those three amazing genres of music, from me.
