Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut.

A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability.

A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia.

The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres.

The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set.

They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.

More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish.

These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours).

The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a BONDED Tipcolours.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet.

Use only WOOLSAFE approved products

WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package.

It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company.

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will...

• Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

How thick?

A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Types

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface.

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.

Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.

Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ.

This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet.This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning.This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch.

However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet.

This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

SHADING

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.

Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use.

The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL

FLATTENING

(SEE SHADING)

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation.

A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent.

Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay.

Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme.

There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance.

However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Once again we were at the annual carpet fest that is Domotex last month – and once again, we’d like to say thank you to all our British customers who made the effort to come over to Germany and visit our stand.

We have to say, if you aren’t a Domotex regular then you really are missing a treat.

With over 1,000 exhibitors, it really does have its finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the flooring sector.

As well as our own rather smart stand, we had the opportunity to put together a concept room display (shown above, left) as part of the show organisers’ initiative, ‘Room for Creativity - Scope for Visions’ – one of just nine carpet exhibitors who took part, our display was various striped carpets displayed with an abstract theme.

There was a very positive reaction to all the new additions to the striped Tube Collection, which will be coming on stream in the next few weeks - especially the striking Hammersmith, which looks absolutely beautiful! (as seen on our stand above, right) - and also to our super new textured loop, Mayfair.

All in all, a very positive start to 2013. We look forward to sharing it with you.

Environmental Oscars Recofloor, the UK’s vinyl flooring take-back scheme, will be recognising its vinyl flooring recycling champions at its annual awards event at Edgbaston Cricket Ground on March 13th. The event will be hosted by Sky Sports presenter Gary Newbon.

Key speakers from the flooring industry will address delegates on how the scheme, founded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, works with the supply chain to divert vinyl flooring waste from landfill.

Material collected by Recofloor is recycled back into products, including new flooring, which benefits the environment and significantly reduces collectors’ waste disposal costs.

Recofloor’s strongly-contested awards recognise the commitment and achievements of Recofloor collectors throughout the UK. In addition to the Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards, there are categories that reward those who have made significant contributions in 2012, including Contractor, Distributor and Construction Company of the Year, Greatest Improver, Best Newcomer and Recofloor Champion.

“As well as celebrating our achievements, it will be an excellent opportunity to share expert knowledge, learn more about how Recofloor can work for your business and meet fellow industry professionals,” explains Jane Gardner of Recofloor.

Recofloor has grown to 450-plus members across the supply chain, from flooring contractors to distributors and even ‘one man bands’ who can use one of Recofloor’s 65 drop-off sites to recycle waste vinyl.

Building on sustainability Changing attitudes to sustainability in specifying flooring and the latest resource-efficient products for new and refurbishment projects will be a key focus for Carpet Recycling UK on Stand S472 and at a seminar on March 7th at Ecobuild 2013.

A full information-packed CRUK seminar programme will highlight current developments in carpet recycling and how carpet materials can be used as a valuable new resource for innovative products and high-end applications.

Three thought-provoking seminar sessions will examine sustainable practices in waste carpet recycling, new flooring manufacture and specification, supported by CRUK, the industry-backed association for waste carpet reuse and recycling, in its fourth appearance at the London Excel Show. A key speaker will be Robert Palmer, of Palmer Market Research who will discuss changing attitudes to sustainability in specifying flooring and findings from his recent Contract Floorcovering Market Report. Emerging outlets for carpet waste, such as applications in new underlay and building products, will be covered by CRUK, along with Michael Walsh of Anglo Recycling and Nick Stillwell of Protomax.

Presentations on green carpet products will introduce the latest sustainable flooring products that will be of interest to architects, specifiers and designers for a wide range of projects. Brian Murphy of Greenspec will be talking about specifying green flooring products and reducing wastage through efficient building design, while Bill McWhirter of BMW Associates will be highlighting developments in resource-efficient carpet tile design.

“Increasingly we are seeing a trend towards products that are resource efficient in manufacture and that have been designed to maximise the potential resource efficiency in refurbishment projects,” explained Laurance Bird, CRUK Director. Landfill diversion has grown to 16.5% in 2011, but CRUK aims to hit a recycling target of 25% by 2015.

Bite-size learning Since its launch in October 2012, the WoolSafe Academy has welcomed numerous flooring and cleaning professionals through its virtual doors. Specialising in providing online training courses that are handily divided into bite-size modules, the WoolSafe Academy’s flexible nature means that it is fast becoming the leading platform for online training.

New year, new team Cormar Carpets, one of the UK’s leading tufted carpet manufacturers, is expanding its national sales team.

Cormar has increased its field sales personnel from 20 to 23, to cover the three new sales territories which have been created to cover the Scottish Borders, North Wales and Devon & Cornwall. In total, four salesmen have been recruited, three for the new areas and one to replace Neil Burgess, (previously covering the Midlands area), who has been promoted to Western regional sales manager.

“I am delighted that we have been successful in recruiting four salesmen who already enjoy an excellent reputation within the carpet industry. We received an overwhelming response to fill these new areas and we believe that the new recruits will be a good addition to the team. This reorganisation means that we will be able to cover the country more effectively and service our customers on a more timely basis,” said Cormar’s Roger Clarke, who is responsible for the recruitment.

The WoolSafe Academy offers a range of specialist courses designed for both cleaning industry professionals and flooring retailers; amongst them the Fibre Care Specialist course, which is specifically suitable for carpet and rug cleaners that want to extend their knowledge. It is also the course that must be completed and passed with flying colours if a cleaner wants to be eligible to become a WoolSafe Approved Service Provider; which can open up exciting new business opportunities.

Consisting of 10 modules that span a range of topics, including both man-made and natural carpet fibres, colouration and wool cleaning science, the course is truly comprehensive. Each module is followed by a self-evaluation in the form of a questionnaire, with both multiple choice and written answers required.

Roger Garrett, of Roger Garrett Professional Carpet & Upholstery Care, is one of the first professional cleaners who have completed the Fibre Care Specialist online course. He explains why the WoolSafe Academy suited his needs:

“I have been involved in the carpet and upholstery cleaning business for over 25 years, and many of my clients are in the high-end, luxury sector. Many of their rugs and carpets are handmade, and I chose to enroll with WoolSafe as the organisation is considered the pinnacle of training within the cleaning industry.

“I am extremely busy and work a six-day week, so it was not possible for me to attend the equivalent classroom-based courses.

Instead, I completed a module a day, after work, and was able to finish the course in just under two weeks. I found it really convenient to be able to use my laptop, as it meant that I could log in and continue where I had left off the day before with complete ease, and from the comfort of my own home.

Cerianne heads up a team of 14 staff and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s accounts and office administration. She will also prepare monthly management reports and provide financial information to the Board of Directors.

Cerianne has a sound financial background previously having worked for a major international company during which she was responsible for setting up and managing an accounts department in Shanghai.

Despite her hectic schedule Cerianne still finds time to continue her accountancy studies and is on course to complete her examinations to become a Chartered Certified Accountant later this year.

DOMOTEX 2013 Europe catches cold as British market thaws a little

UK challenges the winter chill

There’s a chill over Europe and it’s deeper than the snow. Domotex is the world’s top trade event and can usually be relied upon for an annual outpouring of enthusiasm and optimism. This winter in Hannover, the mood was decidedly more sombre – with the exception of the UK! Britain is booming by comparison and is now the market of choice for European flooring. Many top industry people talked positively of the resilience of the UK market and the words “stable” and “steady” were much in use as great compliments.

Markets in continental Europe had a poor 2011, significantly worse than 2010, for many players and while the much publicised problems of southern Europe are well understood, what seems to have shaken confidence is the more recent failing of growth in France, Holland, Belgium and even Germany.

On many minds were the figures for new car sales in 2012 which came out just as the show opened. Europe was 8% down – even Germany was 3% down – while the UK was over 5% up. This mirrors the trend in flooring, with most major companies reporting modest growth in UK sales.

“The UK is doing OK compared to most of Europe,” says Balta’s marketing boss Geert Vanden Bossche who is a leading figure in the industry. “We see Britain as a more stable market than most where we have seen reasonable growth.

“A sign of some returning confidence is that the UK is trading up – consumers are no longer afraid of buying some of the more expensive products,” he said. “We see good opportunities to build business again in Britain.”

Domotex was a little quieter than usual with visitor numbers down from more than 45,000 in 2012 to 40,000 this time – though a concurrent interiors show distorts those figure a little every two years – but the number of exhibitors was about the same.

More noticeable were the re-use of stand designs which might normally have been updated – though Domotex remains an inspiring showcase of floor marketing with dozens of stands costing around £1m to stage at the event.

The more telling impact of recession is the restraint of major companies in launching new products. There are lots of re-vamps, re-colouration and range extensions but the avalanche of product launches that normally accompanies the opening of Domotex was more a trickle than a deluge this year.

So it appears Britain has reasons to be cheerful in 2012 – reasons that fall into the “count your blessings”category rather than any return to the ‘good old days” (which no one in the industry can really remember anyhow!).

Domotex reporting by David Spragg Flooring as fashion is a theme that was highlighted at Domotex as all Europe’s major manufacturers come together to try to out-trend one another with whatever is deemed to be the season’s leading style.

Flooring as fashion The enthusiasm for more ‘designer’ features and bolder colours is partly a function of the difficult marketing conditions – with no real growth in the actual market, the competition for market share has intensified and that’s a difficult trick to pull off if everything is beige.

And as people move house less and invest more in the home they’re in, they are looking for smarter design to make that difference – and maybe a little more indulgence as the growth in the higher end sector has demonstrated.

“Flooring is becoming more synonymous with what is going on in the fashion industry,” says Joanna Rasmden of Wools of New Zealand and one of the industry’s top authorities on design.

“It used to be that flooring followed fashion – often with a substantial time lag – but now the two are much more intertwined,” she says. “Most of the major fashion houses now have an interiors brand and there is more co-development of style across what people wear and how they dress their homes.”

As people stay in their homes, comfort is to the fore and the industry has responded to that with a plethora of launches of deep, soft carpets with saxonies at the front and shaggies still doing well. Texture is a growing trend and clever use of texture – especially multi height and velvet/twist mixes look increasingly interesting.

Colours have got warmer and richer too with intense reds and deep taupes increasingly in evidence as well as this years favourites of violet, jades and ‘interesting’ greys.

Stripes continue their march as the most acceptable pattern for many consumers but they are getting more variegated, more sophisticated and more opulent – finding their ways in to beautifully expensive carpet.

The acceptance of polypropylene is accelerating – driven by the ‘perfect storm’ of recession, higher wool prices and massive investment in synthetic fibre technology that is creating luxurious wool look-alike products that are both soft and resilient. But the recent stabilization of the wool price has tempted more back into the market and the launch of new wool products is no longer completely stalled.

The strong run of LVT continues across Europe and there is intense development work among competitors to differentiate the offering with new decors and new performance features – and expect to see yet more innovation in installation technolology just when you thought all the click systems had been thought of.

DOMOTEX 2013 McThree sees a welcome return to design, colour and fashion among UK rug buyers so while shaggies continue to perform strongly, the company is able to play to its creative strengths and have a little more fun in its studio. “We have got to put a bit of life back into the market,” says Robert Witherington.

The result is a number of ranges with confident cleaner colours and smart designs. A great example is the new range of options in the Cottage collection, a desirable flatweave which has a wide choice of designs in softer, pastel shades.

Bronte offered a warm welcome at Domotex with a deep red carpeted stand in their highly fashionable ‘chilli pepper’ colour – one of 60 wool colours and 60 twist colours that featured in the company’s major project to re-colour their offering which was completed last year. Sophistication meets the challenge “Now is the right time to push forward,” says Steve Elliott of Associated Weavers – a company which has made a virtue of the vicious economic environment and continues to invest in securing more market share.

With a focus on its “Look for the butterfly” branding – more than 1,000 POS units are going out in the High Street, - 2013 is a key year for the company as it launches a new flagship luxury range and re-invigorates its wool collection – and it’s a changeover year for colours.

DOMOTEX 2013 Carpenter’s smart colour coordinated stand gave visitors the opportunity to sample the underfoot feel of each of their eleven PU underlay qualities and now the product range is looking so good, the company has turned its attention to the rest of the planet.

Using the slogan “Underlay that does not cost the earth”, the company launched its recycling programme in the second half of last year and is busy signing up installers and retailers to bring their uplifts and offcuts of Carpenter underlay back to wholesalers who have been issued with wheelie bins and special bags to take up the crusade. Balta is in a hurry to make the most of what it sees as the market opportunity to trade up in the UK. The better end of the carpet business has had a good recession by all accounts and the launch last year of Balta’s super-soft Sensit polypropylene yarn has created the opportunity to deliver some excellent products to UK consumers. Flock Living launched in 2012 and is still a relatively new name in carpets but it continues to develop its ‘natural luxury’ credentials.

Domotex 2013 certainly reasserted the aesthetic presence of Flock.

Situated on the Wools of New Zealand stand, it showcased its twelve 100% Laneve wool, plain and patterned ranges, together with trials of prospective new products. Aiming very much at ‘the interiors conscious’, the sumptuous collections created a lot of interest from overseas and UK potential stockists.

Wool House - the biggest celebration of wool that the Campaign for Wool has ever undertaken - will open on March 13th at Somerset House in London and promises to be a stunning showcase for wool carpets and rugs.

The event has attracted the support of leading manufacturers. Ulster, Brintons, Roger Oates and Alternative Flooring are just some of the carpet industry names to feature within the stunning neo-classical architecture of the former naval offices that sit elegantly at the end of The Strand.

Sheep – always a winning feature of Campaign for Wool events - will also make an appearance and will take up residence for four days in the Courtyard.

Each day has been themed to cover the entire spectrum of the wool industry and special feature events will cover fashion, interiors and artisan and craft.

Runners win in long halls of Somerset House

The designer runner story will be strong at Wool House as the long hallway that runs through the space is a perfect place to display the product that has made the most immense comeback in recent years.

Brintons will produce a runner over 100 feet long for the longest hall, which will be designed by Cristian Zuzunaga recognised for his stunning bright geometric designs.

“The idea is to show how wonderful colour can be within carpet and this runner is an exceptional piece that will really inspire our visitors,” Arabella McNie, Curator of Wool House said.

Roger Oates will create the other runner in his renowned fashionable flatweave carpet which has become increasingly popular for its stylish design and unobtrusive weave. Both are sure to inspire the visitor to the twelve day event with enthusiasm for a little floor design creativity!

Flower on Flooring News News Flooring industry earns its stripes Neutral colours will always find a place within interior design, but many in the flooring sector are celebrating the increasing demand for bolder colours in carpet, with stripes and coordinates at the forefront of this.

Adam Carpets sales director Eamonn Prescott told The Stocklists magazine that his company always strives to make its products stand apart from others: “When it came to stripes we looked at what we could do different from what was already being done,” he says. “We saw loops and twist stripes, so we decided to go for a more luxury looking product and Castlemead Velvet Stripe was born. Not only does it have a luxury look, we also made the pattern ‘mirror aligned.’”

This meant that it could be easily centred onto stairs for a more aesthetically pleasing finish.

The company followed with Kasbah Stripe, mixing velvet and twist yarns to create a stripe that was not only ‘mirror aligned’, but had a textured difference as well.

“Both ranges have co-ordinating colours within our Castlemead Twist and Kasbah Twist ranges,” says Mr Prescott.

Edel Telenzo has set the pace in stripes with its Tube Collection

Edel Telenzo says its love affair with stripes began around five years ago with the introduction of the Tube Collection, a range of thick and thin contrasting and multi-stripe options in 100% wool that continues to be its best seller. “Stripes are not just for high traffic areas,” says Edel Telenzo UK operations manager Lesley Inman. “People are using them throughout the house to give their floors more interest. Stripes are the new patterns. Having a plain co-ordinate and a shared colour bank also extends the appeal of stripes, providing a smart, unifying factor throughout.”

For 2013, the company’s stripes are getting bolder. A bright, bold multi-stripe, Hammersmith is the latest Tube Collection addition, previewed at Harrogate and launched at Domotex. Within its contract carpets, a jazzy stripe is being added to the popular Gelbac-backed Lima collection in the company’s own 100% Edelon high performance polypropylene yarn.

Crucial Trading finds striped carpet continues to be successful, with its iconic Audrey and Mississippi still attracting the consumer’s eye as they look for bolder and more inspirational floorcoverings. Over the past 12 months the company states it has worked with suppliers to alter colour palates in current ranges such as Sisool Tric, Flatweave Classics, Sisool Small Boucle and Sisool Big Boucle to offer complementary colours for its stripes. This year will also see the launch of a new stripe called Biscayne, which will include 12 colour ways along with three additional neutral ranges to provide a contrast throughout the home.

Alex Watts of John Lanham Watts Carpets says its Duchy range offers coordinated colours in different designs, where the plaid design could furnish one area (hall stairs and landing) leading to the same colours in a floral for a sitting room or bedroom. “Our Bedale range also has coordinating colour sets across the designs in more natural berber shades,” he continues. “In our Goodacre ranges the Lakeland collection can be coordinated as the colours match across the designs.” Although the company does include stripes in its ranges, it creates bespoke stripes for specific contracts, and frequently splits 4m wide carpet down to 2m for hotel corridors. “The fact we are willing to weave as little as 100sqm in an entirely bespoke carpet means a unique designed look is available to many more clients,” Mr Watts concludes.

Reclaim the margin!

The market is improving to some extent according to our sample with more than half of respondents saying sales were better in 2012 compared to 2011 – 14% said “much better” and only 3.5% said “much worse” – and the majority said things had picked up in the second half. 68% said the run up to Christmas matched or exceeded their expectations.

Retailers are reasonably optimistic about the year ahead. While 59% expected the sales line to be stable, 18% expect modest growth and 15% are expecting a sales increase of more than 10%.

While only 7% thought there would be a significant improvement in the economy next year, 55% are anticipating that improvement in the next 2 – 5 years and only 15% were pessimistic – expecting no real growth in the foreseeable future.

Margins were the big theme that emerged from our ‘soapbox’ – the comments that we ask readers to leave anonymously. “We as a trade need to understand what it is to make profit,” said an Irish retailer. “We work very hard and long hours for a very small return. Pricing needs to increase if we are to survive as most of our resourses have at this stage been depleted.”

Another comment was: “Margins and profits have been hit where companies are selling and distributing products that are too similar.

Do we chase higher turnover in the hope of extra profitability or are we being busy fools competing on price to transact more business but make even less money.”

“Come on everyone - time to trade up, the first clients to start spending again will have the funds for something nice,” said an Essex business. “No one will thank you for under selling in 18 months time least of all the end user if the quality is not right.”

Many respondents thought manufacturers could do more and one comment was repeated by several people: “Manufacturers and wholesalers need to stop opening up new accounts willy nilly and maybe the retailers will help them more instead of trying to find the cheapest supplier and trying to push prices down. Then we can all make sensible margins.” Selling to internet traders was also strongly criticised.

Pricing is key, of course. More retailers increased their prices (48%) than froze pricing (37%) and only 11% said they had had to reduce prices.

Credit is less popular – while 68% said credit sales were stable, 24% report a drop and some commented that debit cards were becoming more popular than credit cards. But discounts are,

There was an even split on whether the quality end of the market was holding up better than the rest of the sector – one comment was “the top end has been better than ever for us recently. We were told that when better times came back, it would start off at the upper end of the market, and it seems to be happening now. But it seems like the ordinary working man has no money to spend.”

Interestingly, 74% confirmed that polypropylene carpets were becoming increasingly acceptable compared to wool.

World’s largest showcase of wool The UK is set to see the biggest ever celebration of wool as The Campaign for Wool launches Wool House from 13th until 24th March 2013

Wool House will present a vision for wool as a modern, versatile, lifestyle fibre and will be hosted in the stunning West Wing of Somerset House in central London. It will feature a showcase of interiors, fashion and the world of artisan and craft making, along with a hi-tech educational suite.

The Campaign for Wool has appointed Arabella McNie as the curator. She has over twenty years’ experience of working as a stylist and designer in the world of interiors. Arabella McNie said, “I am determined to show wool as a modern fibre and visitors will see a broad spectrum from ultra-modern and hi-tech to highly luxurious and more traditional. The event has invited leading interior designers to offer their vision and seven individual rooms will show how the design community uses the fibre extensively within their work. Exclusive room sets from Donna Wilson, Kit Kemp and Rifat Ozbek will feature alongside a huge wool art installation commissioned from the acclaimed Dutch tapestry artist, Claudy Jongstra. Other woollen delights include a Roger Oates runner and a Pantone style rug that will represent international carpet manufacturers. Additionally, an artisan in residence will work on location throughout the period showing the heritage of industry skills to the public.

A series of wool-led designer talks, events and a programme of activities with interactive workshops will be held during the course of the event. School children from around the UK will be invited to visit the Wool House and a special educational room will feature tablets that cover everything from sheep to manufacturing and all types of products.

We have 12 Regions throughout the country handling our floor covering, curtain, furniture and lighting packs and a separate Showhome Division.

Due to our significant and continued expansion we are looking for the following positions:

Two Regional Sales Managers 1 Based in Exeter and 1 in Chesterfield

OTE £40k + company car We require highly motivated and confident individuals for these roles. You must be keen to succeed and able to demonstrate an excellent track record in selling, acquiring and developing new business and looking after existing clients. You will also understand that business growth comes from exceptional customer service. Experience in floor coverings would be an advantage but not essential.

Planner/ Estimator Based Biggin Hill

Three Area Sales Coordinators

1 based in Chesterfield, 1 in Slough and 1 in Southampton

OTE £25 to £30k + company car

These are brand new roles and we require highly motivated, confident and successful individuals to join us, who are keen to identify and win new business and sell to potential and existing customers. You need to understand that business growth comes from exceptional customer service. Being able to measure, plan, price and quote would be an advantage, as would carpet and curtain experience.

Showhome Sales Manager (Southern)

We require an experienced intelligent Planner/ Estimator who can plan from measurements and drawings, estimate, price and produce quotations. You must have good product knowledge, an exceptional eye for detail, be organised and able to use Excel spreadsheets.

Although mostly office based, there may on occasions be a need to visit site to measure or deal with service issues.

We need a dynamic and inspirational sales orientated individual with a design background or show home sales experience that is keen to succeed and develop our Showhome Division’s business in the South. This exciting new position will cover the southern half of the country and include London.

OTE £35 to £40k + company car

Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, IT skills and a full driving licence are required for all these positions. Benefits include 23 days holiday + 8 bank holidays, health care, life cover and staff discount.
