Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

WOVEN

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. To contact an inspector in your area call 01943 462127, email: inspector@woolsafe.org, or visit: www.woolsafe.org / Private Householder / Registered Inspectors

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 rjmoore65@googlemail.com rmoore@smartercarpets.com

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any

fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

own-label options and the UK/European mix

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales • ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services • Business services • Financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings • Regional workshops • Supplier presentations • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want

THE STOCKLISTS August 2013

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

SPROUTING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make

• shedding • pulled loops

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

SHADING

STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

an informed choice.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL

FLATTENING

(SEE SHADING)

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

COME TO OUR PLACE

Mayfair

OUR SALES TEAM

Our newly refurbished showroom

We’re very pleased with our new showroom area at our new offices in Elland, which we have recently finished refurbishing. We’ve kept it clean and stylish, in keeping with our overall attitude towards style and quality. Our qualities are neatly featured on a fabulous wall display – which looks more like a great piece of modern art than a selection of carpet samples, we think! And we’re particularly pleased with the carpet on the floor: we’ve mixed Highbury and Hampton Court in very broad stripes along with an equally wide border of thick, deep pile Wild Romance. It shows off our range of very different qualities very effectively. It’s a great working/display space and we look forward to welcoming many of you there. We’re happy to make it available to any of you who’d like to use it as a meeting space. We’d be delighted to see you.

Primed and ready Our sales team has had a busy few weeks, visiting all our customers to update tombolas and pattern books and bring everyone up to speed on our new ranges. Hopefully everyone is now primed and ready to sell with confidence the new Hammersmith broad stripe, new colours in Centrepoint, Mainline, Bakerloo and Piccadilly and the superb new 3ply structured loop, Mayfair. We think these are great additions to our portfolio and build on our reputation for making some of the best quality, structured loop carpets in the market. Our aim is always to supply carpets that perform, are problem free, look great and offer excellent value for money. If you need any further information on these or any of our ranges, please contact your local sales representative/agent or the office.

Brintons’ appointment at the palace Royal Warrant holders since 1958, Brintons were invited to mark the Coronation Festival in July by designing and curating a 1950’s style room, set in the grounds of Buckingham Palace. Brintons launched a rug collection during the festival, called The Coronation Rug Collection inspired by original 1950's designs from Brintons' archives, including the Mimosa design by Matisse that dates back to 1951, pictured here. They also showcased their patented High Definition Weave technology. The look of the room draws a modern take on a 1950's living room, the floors and the walls are covered in Brintons carpet inspired by the famous "Net and Ball" design that was used In the Royal Festival Hall foyer for the 1951 Festival of Britain and the very same design covered a 1950’s sofa on jersey fabric to create a play on scale and challenge the interpretation of a living space. Guests also enjoyed a felt ceiling sculpture using remnants of yarn from the production of Brintons carpets, mirroring the post-war ethos of thrift current in 1951. A woodland image was displayed, woven on Brintons pioneering High Definition Weave loom. This patented technology can produce photo realistic, three-dimensional design definition in 32 colours, compared to conventlonal looms that use 8-12 colours. Feature: Ultimate 18 from Ryalux News

The Ultimate appearance

Ultimate 18 is the first, and only, true Pass machine manufactured velvet that is available as a custom colour.

Ryalux, one of the UK’s leading quality carpet manufacturers, is renowned for pioneering in the industry with a list of ‘firsts’ including: • The first carpet manufacturer to produce 5 metre wide carpet • The first to produce any width carpet • The first to offer custom dye carpets

They continue this tradition with the launch of their new 2 ply 80/20 velvet – Ultimate 18. Ultimate 18 is the first, and only, true Pass machine manufactured velvet that is available as a custom colour. Ultimate 18 is a 2 ply, 80% wool/20% nylon velvet cut pile carpet, made using the finest New Zealand wools. As with all of Ryalux’s Ultimate ranges, Ultimate 18 is offered in any width up to 7 metres, and as a custom colour using Ryalux’s special dye service. Darren Longden, Ryalux’s Commercial Director explains more about yet another Ryalux first. “Whilst there are several 2 ply custom dye products on the market that purport to be velvets, they do not have the “billiard table top” appearance of a true velvet. This is because the hank dyeing process slightly curls the tips of the yarn, meaning the appearance of a true pinpoint velvet cannot be achieved. from The Stocklists

Using our extensive yarn technology, dyeing and manufacturing experience, along with a lot of hard work, we now have a way to overcome this issue, and in Ultimate 18 have a hank dyed true velvet carpet which has the traditional velvet appearance you associate with stock dyed products”. Ryalux offer custom colours on all their Ultimate ranges with no minimum order quantity (surcharge applies for orders under 10m2). This new quality now features on all their Ultimate display units, and to coincide with its launch, they have produced a compact swatch book which showcases Ultimate 18, along with their other Ultimate qualities.

“Whilst there are several 2 ply custom dye products on the market that purport to be velvets, they do not have the “billiard table top” appearance of a true velvet.” For a sample of Ultimate 18, or to find out more about this exciting new range, contact Ryalux: 0161 762 3030 (option 1 for sales) or contact your local Ryalux representative info@ryalux.co.uk

Circular success Carpet recycling and re-use initiatives showcased at Carpet Recycling UK’s recent fifth annual conference in Birmingham highlighted the significant progress in embracing circular economy opportunities. Nearly 100 carpet industry stakeholders including manufacturers, distributors, recyclers, waste management companies and raw material suppliers attended what organisers described as their ‘best-ever’ event, held at the city’s Institute of Engineering and Technology. A wide-ranging programme focusing on waste minimisation and designing for recycling, outlet development, market research and lobbying as well as collecting and sorting, provided plenty of inspiration and information for delegates who attended from all over the world. CRUK Director Laurance Bird said: “There was a real buzz throughout an action-packed day and it was certainly our best-ever event, which was well-received by all who attended. The conference demonstrated how the work undertaken by CRUK and its members is driving carpet waste up the waste hierarchy. “Active projects revealed how attitudes have changed. Carpet is now regarded as a valuable resource from which valuable raw materials can be extracted for reuse in a second life, rather than just a bulky waste only fit for landfill. The sector is embracing burgeoning opportunities in the circular economy and making the most of existing resources,” added Laurance. Aimed at organisations seeking outlets for their carpet waste as well as carpet manufacturers and firms interested in new recycling technologies, the conference examined topics such as waste prevention/redesign, take back schemes, reuse and energy from waste (EfW). A popular session hosted by Mike Walters, Operations Manager, Recycling & Waste for the John Lewis Partnership, highlighted the department store’s sustainability strategy and their post-installation off cuts collection project. Off cuts collected from fitters are reprocessed by Anglo Recycling into non-woven felt underlay for John Lewis. T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Evolving with adhesive Mapei adhesive systems were used by contractors, ISG and C&C Flooring to install a variety of carpet and vinyl flooring throughout a new college centre, which is now established as ‘Dudley Evolve’. Providing learning facilities for the local community, businesses and ‘Dudley Sixth’, a college centre for A-level students. Mapei’s products covered approximately 6,000 m2 of flooring, which became the college’s science labs, corridors, hairdressing clinic, WC areas, dance studios and classrooms. C&C Flooring applied Mapei’s two components, solvent free moisture barrier, Mapeproof ESM. Two coats were used to guarantee complete coverage of the substrate to gain maximum protection. One of Mapei’s Eco products, Eco Prime was utilised due to having properties of low emissions of VOC making it suitable for use in the environment. Mapei’s levelling and smoothing compound, Latexplan Trade was chosen for its low odour and high compressive strength which is required to support the new flooring under the constant footfall the floors would experience. To be positive the chosen vinyl floor coverings would adhere perfectly to the newly created substrate, Mapei Ultrabond Eco 380 adhesive was used because of its environmental qualities, strong initial bond and ability to withstand intense levels of foot traffic and wheelchairs made it the perfect solution for the new development. Mapei’s solvent free, carpet tile tracifier, Ultrabond Eco Tack was chosen for it is ideal for the non-permanent installation of carpet tiles, as it allows the replacement of carpet tiles as and when required. As well as its low emissions of VOC this accommodates the environmental friendly aspects of the new build. T 0121 508 6970. www.mapei.co.uk 40 August 2013

Kingsmead and Georgian join forces Georgian Carpets is to merge with Kingsmead in a bid to boost the sales effectiveness of the businesses and meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive market. The enlarged business will trade under the Kingsmead brand under Martin West who is promoted to MD. The Georgian name is taking a back seat, though the company says it has plans for the branding in the future. There will be a rationalization of carpet ranges across the business over the next year. “This is a positive step to create a business that needs to be a larger player to thrive in a highly competitive market,” Martin West told The Stocklists. “The new company will be bigger than the sum of its two parts.

Martin West will be promoting the bigger Kingsmead business with sharper focus

“The business will benefit from a larger sales force that is more focused on smaller but more concentrated geographical areas and much greater presence though increased point-of-sale,” he said. The two sales forces have been combined to a total of 14 sales representatives and two regional sales managers - Clint Carver and Ian Shopland have been promoted from within the existing teams. The move is effective from August 1.

Carl joins Cormar as Northern head Cormar Carpets has appointed a new regional sales manager for the northern region. Carl Quail joins the Cormar team with an abundance of sales experience including previous employment with Kosset Carpets, Abingdon, Pownall and Ryalux in national accounts, national sales manager and sales director roles. Said Carl: “I’ve been in sales all my life starting out in the FMCG environment and I have learnt some good disciplines and structures early on in my career. These have helped me when developing sales teams and building relationships with people - things that are key in this business.” “Having worked in this industry a long time, I know that Cormar has a great reputation for launching quality ranges with great innovation and of course second to none service levels. I am delighted to be a part of it, as well as having the support of the team behind me.” Outside of work Carl is married to Karen, a nurse at York Hospital, and has five children. Lano confirms Mohawk deal Lano has confirmed that it has signed a distribution agreement for the Western European residential broadloom market with the largest flooring manufacturer in the world, Mohawk International. This agreement will see Lano become the exclusive distributor of Mohawk Europe’s popular residential carpet collections that include the world-famous SmartStrand, SmartStrand Silk and EverStrand styles. “This distribution arrangement is a strategic move that will play on the strengths of both Lano and Mohawk International, and will strengthen Lano Carpets’ position as one of the leading suppliers of domestic textile floorcoverings,” explains Joe Lano, Lano Carpets. “Lano has forged a reputation based on high-quality products and outstanding service, and Mohawk is known for its cutting-edge innovation in fibre development. This collaboration will provide our customers with the convenience of having both Mohawk and Lano qualities available from a single sales source, which will improve service and save valuable time.”

Headlam warns on market contraction Top UK flooring distributor Headlam Group issued a warning at the beginning of July that first half earnings will be approximately 10% lower than last year due a contraction in the market during the period. Following the adverse first quarter performance, Headlam reported some recovery in March and April but a good start to May fell away as the month continued into June. The Group’s July statement confirmed: “As a result, the board now believes it is unlikely that the company will meet market expectations for the financial year as a whole.”

This improved distribution model will cause no changes for Lano customers. Mohawk Europe has been successfully integrated into Lano operations to ensure a seamless and swift transition. T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com 44 August 2013

Survey

Are you getting I.T.? Getting your kicks from routine clicks There is increasing momentum towards information technology as manufacturers seek to manage their costs in the tight economic environment. But acceptance of these systems is relatively low.

In our survey –and the fact that it’s an online survey means respondents are most likely to be ‘tech savvy’ – nearly half said that they almost never place an order online with manufacturers and about a third said they only place a quarter or less of their business this way.

Asked if such systems saved them time, 55% of retailers said no and yet nearly 60% said they would prefer more manufacturers to go down this route. One of the key advantages of IT systems was the delivery tracking service which lets you know exactly when your order will arrve and 63% said that was a real benefit. We don’t normally mention manufacturers in our survey articles, but Cormar’s system was cited a number of times as a great example. Concerns that systems were replacing personal service were allayed in our survey with only 26% saying that they felt suppliers had cut back too much on the ‘human interface’. Perhaps surprisingly in these days of junk email, 75% of our retailers said they welcomed getting email bulletins from manufacturers, although 28% said they got too many. Only 9% of survey respondents said they had difficulty finding the information on the net on products and services they need – 45% said manufacturers websites were generally good but 37% said there was much scope for further improvement in this area.

When we switched our questions to how retailers were using the internet to promote their business, there was a lot less enthusiasm. Only 18% said they regularly communicated with customers by email and 81% said they never emailed offers or regular bulletins. Only 9% were regular users of social media systems like Twitter and Facebook.

60% would prefer more supplier systems 48% never place an order online

75% welcome email bulletins from suppliers 82% don’t regularly email customers

7% use social media to help their business

36% says the internet is bad for business

The Stocklists polled 994 retailers throughout the UK during July 2013. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part. However, two-thirds of our respondents said they had updated something on their own website within the last three months.

The final, deceptively simple, question asked whether, on balance, the internet is good for the flooring business. 36% said bad, 27% said good and 37% aren’t sure. The threat from e-commerce still casts a shadow over the internet for the High Street retailer!

Sleeping on the job Carpenter, one of the world’s leaders in sleep technology, has launched four new pillows to cater for every consumer requirement under the ‘sleep better’ brand. The Outlast Fibre and Memory pillow has been designed to offer consumers the ‘best of both worlds’ with practical head and neck support from the memory foam and a soft sensation from the micro-fibre. Outlast technology helps the user to regulate their temperature to aid a restful night’s sleep. It features a reversible cover with Outlast on one surface and 100 per cent cotton on the reverse. The Biocrystal pillow encorporates luxuriously soft micro fibre with unique CsAM technology, helping to regulate and balance energy levels and the immune system, while helping the user to wake up feeling rested and refreshed. A discreet ‘SleePad’ pouch filled with the crystals sits inside the pillow and can be removed when required. Said Gillian Finch, national sales manager for consumer products at Carpenter: “We’ve developed a suite of new products to cater to growing demand for innovation and have incorporated latest technology to offer something for every need.” A multi-purpose ‘heart shaped’ pillow has been developed to mould to the body with ease and is particularly beneficial for those with bad backs or pregnant women who struggle to get comfortable. It is available with breathable CoolMax technology fabric, designed to aid airflow throughout the product to keep it fresh. The Moulded Solo Pillow is a luxurious micro-fibre pillow with a moulded memory foam core. It offers two sleeping surfaces depending on whether the user requires support or luxury. Continued Gillian: “The range has a pillow to suit everyone, whether they suffer from headaches, bad necks or want something that is just excellent quality and comfortable.” T 01457 861141 www.carpenterconsumer.co.uk 46 August 2013

Retailer expertise online The Carpet Foundation has launched a totally new website. With the key objective of promoting retail members as ‘the experts’, and with recurring reference to the TSI backed Code of Practice, the aim is to actively and quantifiably drive footfall into retail shops. As a result, the retailer search facility is prominent throughout, and is even animated to draw further attention to it. The new look is fresh, clean and contemporary in appearance, with easy to use navigation, while the copy is packed full of high ranking Google key words to improve Search Engine Optimisation. Consumer oriented, it targets ‘females who are in the market for carpet’, and avoids ‘carpet speak’. There are 5 highlighted areas, in addition to the retailer search facility – Top Tips on Buying carpet; local experts; Quality Mark carpet; current trends and lastly advice on how to clean a carpet when accidents occur. These main areas are backed up by technical advice on areas such as underfloor heating and asthma, a pdf of the Code of Practice and there is a dedicated media section. There is also a ‘member log in’ facility for retailers to track visitors to their shops. Standalone one page member websites are also included. The new site heralds the beginning of a concerted ‘digital’ drive by the Carpet Foundation to increase and improve its online proposition. Commenting on the new site, Chief Executive Andrew Stanbridge said: “Increasingly, consumers in the market for carpet do their ‘due diligence’ on line, and it is essential that we have a site that is modern, well optimised and is full of relevant information in bite size chunks. The design is ‘du jour’ and we have trawled through Google analytics to ensure that the content is relevant. I am confident that it ticks all the boxes for the end user. This is the first step on our digital journey that will be rolled out to our members later in the year.” T 01562 755 568 www.carpetfoundation.com

Harrogate is a valuable opportunity for retailers to make a first-hand assessment of the benefits of buying group membership. “The Harrogate Show represents everything that is positive about our industry,” said Martin Peace of Abingdon Carpets. “It¹s the perfect springboard for the new selling season, a chance to get a reaction to new ranges and developments and a chance to mix with customers old and new in one of everyone¹s favourite social spots, the gorgeous town of Harrogate itself!” The Flooring Show, Harrogate opens on Sunday, September 1, until September 3. Carpet Recycling UK

Opportunities for retailers to enhance their businesses by recycling their carpets and carpet off-cuts will be explained by Carpet Recycling UK at September’s Harrogate Flooring Show. CRUK, the industry’s association for recycling and reusing carpet, will hold two presentations with a specific retail sector focus on Monday September 2nd from 1.15pm to 2pm in the Business Enrichment Centre. These will include an overview on the progress of take-back schemes for off-cuts at John Lewis and local distributor sites, as well as outlining future plans for similar initiatives across the country. Demand is growing for clean post-installation off-cuts that can be recycled into new products such as mattress pads, carpet underlay and insulation products. “Consumers want to see recycling happen; it’s the right thing to do and it makes sound financial sense with the ever-escalating cost of landfill disposal,” says Laurance Bird, CRUK Director. “We are encouraging retailers to recycle their carpet as they can gain tangible benefits to their businesses, while also saving on disposal costs.” He added: “As an organisation dedicated to diverting carpet from landfill, we can assist retailers interested in coming on board with us.” Hall M Stand 32 • 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

With points awarded for every square metre of Crown Floors carpet sold, points soon add up and retailers can exchange these for a variety of rewards including the latest gadgets, days out and even designer fashion items. The WoolSafe Organisation will once again be exhibiting at the Flooring Show in Harrogate, keen to show visiting retailers and manufacturers the exciting developments that have been keeping the busy team occupied over the past year. Harrogate will provide an ideal platform for WoolSafe to showcase its award-winning Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide App to the hundreds of expected visitors to its stand (just inside the main entrance) and demonstrate just how it can help their businesses. As Steve Bakker, marketing manager, The WoolSafe Organisation, explains: “The Flooring Show will be a brilliant opportunity for carpet retailers and manufacturers to really get to grips with the WoolSafe Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide App, and it will allow us to directly show them how they can use the app to benefit their working day. The app arms retailers with expert knowledge about how to remove common and more unusual stains, equipping them to answer any queries that their customers may have and allowing them to provide greater levels of service than ever before. “The carpet industry is experiencing a shift in popularity towards polypropylene fibre carpets that are sold as very simple to keep clean, so we are excited to introduce this app to wool carpet manufacturers as it highlights that wool carpets can be kept spot free just as easily and effectively.,” continues Steve Bakker. “We really believe the app can help change consumer attitudes towards maintenance of more natural fibres, and the best thing is that many of the fuss-free solutions that the app suggests can be done with easy to purchase WoolSafe approved cleaning products.” Those in the carpet industry wanting to have this expert knowledge at their fingertips can download and explore the WoolSafe Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide app prior to the Flooring Show free from the App Store. Natural choice for style The Linocork collection from Granorte is made entirely from natural ingredients to create a floorcovering that breathes life into the home and feels truly unique. Ideal for retailers that want to cater to homeowners looking for environmentally friendly products, Linocork planks feature a 2mm Linoleum surface atop a cork layer, a high-density fibreboard core and an integrated cork underlay. In total, the designs contain 25% preconsumer recycled content, and each floor has Greenguard Indoor Air Quality certification and FSC-accreditation. “The demand for natural floor surfaces is steadily increasing, and the Linocork collection combines two renewable materials to great effect,” comments Paulo Rocha, product manager, Granorte. “The linoleum surface feels smooth to the touch and offers great levels of durability, while the cork base helps to regulate air quality and improve underfoot comfort as well as sound and heat insulation.”

Finishing touch of class As every fitter and retailer knows, a flooring project is never truly complete without certain accessories, and the collection of profiles, stair nosings and PVC trims from Floorwise makes it easy to find that ideal finishing touch. “Floorwise has ranges suitable for both domestic and commercial use, including curvable profiles as well as the Classic, Max, Max Reflections, Wood Floor and PVC profiles and stair nosings,” comments Richard Bailey, managing director, The Floorwise Group. “This convenience is what makes us ideal for both retailers and fitters, as we have products to suit a whole variety of installations, whether its wood or vinyl, ceramics or carpet.” Ideal for laminate, engineered and wooden planks, the Wood Floor range of flooring profiles is available in a variety of sizes, heights and finishes to provide a neat and attractive finish. With a unique ‘stick & go’ adhesive method, this collection can help to save valuable time as it allows fitters to simply cut the profile to size, peel back the tape, stick down, and go. The Classic collection of profiles is precision engineered to exacting standards, and for projects where extra strength and rigidity are required, the Floorwise Max range consists of maximum duty metals that are suitable for both commercial and domestic installations. The Max Reflections range goes one step further and focuses on the concept of coordinated interiors. Combining high durability with ontrend finishes including chrome, black nickel, brass and brushed steel, Max Reflections is the go-to collection for profiles that coordinate with other interior fixtures and fittings such as light switches, electrical sockets and door handles.

Not only sustainable, Linocork floors also deliver in terms of aesthetics. With a choice of rectangular planks with a marble-like appearance or bold one-colour square tiles, the collection is ideal for those that want to inject vibrant style into their home. A total of 16 vivid marble-effect decors in colours such as Deep Red, Sunset and Graphite sit alongside 12 plain tiles that can be mixed and matched to create stunning checkerboard finishes. “Linocork really does prove that natural flooring need not be boring,” continues Paulo Rocha. “With such a plethora of colours to choose from, the collection will excite shoppers looking for natural but ontrend floorcoverings, and there is a design to suit all tastes.” T 01785 711 131 www.granorte.co.uk

Floorwise also offers a range of curvable Flexible PVC Trims, that are suitable for contract and domestic locations. The collection includes different coloured top trim profiles to create a neat, safe and durable junction between adjacent floor finishes, and the varying sizes allow for almost all floorcovering thicknesses to be accommodated. “It is clear that Floorwise provides everything a fitter could possibly need when it comes to finishing off a floor,” continues Richard Bailey. “All of our finishing products offer the famous Floorwise quality and value, and it remains our top priority to continue to deliver one of the most comprehensive profile ranges available for both commercial and residential projects.” T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

Hotter shots Industry hot shots turned out in force for The Furniture Makers’ annual Big Shots day. Some 33 teams, comprising a mix of experts, novices, keen amateurs and first timers, took part in the event at E.J. Churchill shooting grounds at High Wycombe last Thursday June 13. “It was fantastic to see such a good level of support in what is undoubtedly a tough economic climate,” said the Furniture Makers’ Charity President Tony Attard. The one day shoot - whose major sponsor was Furniture Village and was also sponsored by BrightHouse, KI UK, Chaucer Logistics, Kolorcraft, Designer Contracts and Collins & Hayes - raised over £21,000 with cash still rolling in for the furnishing industry’s only dedicated charity. The annual clay pigeon shoot has raised over £400,000 for the Charity over the years. All funds raised will go towards supporting those who work, or have worked, in the furnishing industry and need financial help. T 020 256 5558 58 August 2013

Flower on Flooring News Let the grain take the strain Replicating the natural effect of wood is an area that has seen considerable growth in the flooring industry in recent years, especially for luxury vinyl tiles, but it is notable that wood-effect also remains the popular choice in other areas, such as laminate and cushion.

Forbo marketing manager, Julie Dempster, said: “Natural-look materials give homes the feel-good factor that people are looking for right now. With naturally inspired finishes it’s about giving back-tonature charm modern, fresh appeal. "But, when it comes to flooring, timeless design is ever popular. Known for its high-end, hard-wearing finish, our Novilon collection includes classic wood effects in traditional, dark colours. In addition, more rustic finishes have been introduced, reflecting the popularity for the worn, distressed look." Having predicted a flooring trend for larger planks in wood effect flooring at the start of the year, luxury vinyl flooring manufacturer Moduleo has seen a surge of interest in this new trend. It has accordingly launched a new range of large planks in its hard-wearing Transform range.

UK and Eire managing director David Bigland, says larger planks create the illusion of space in room settings. "The size of these new planks means that we don’t cut up the grain and are therefore able to showcase the authentic finish of our products,” he says. The large plank from Moduleo is available in four finishes: Verdon Oak, Classic Oak, Baltic Maple and Ethnic Wenge. The new plank will measure 1500 mm x 245 mm and is available in both Click and dryback installation. “Our flooring is designed to remain as true to its natural counterpart as possible, but with none of the associated drawbacks. Our new large planks provide a striking finish and can create the illusion of more space in an enclosed area, as well as showcasing large open commercial areas,” says Mr Bigland.

Tarkett inspires with its ID collections

Victoria Luxury Flooring LVT residential sales and marketing manager Robert Byrne, says: "Resilient floor finishes are echoing the craftsmanship of a by-gone age when wood floors were ‘worked by hand’ with hand scraped surface textures and ‘salvaged’ wood effects,

Two of the most recent LVT new introductions are Tarkett's iD Inspiration 70 and iD Selection 40 collections. Both include over 30 different colours and effects and have been designed to suit the requirements of consumer homes, but are made to commercial specifications and therefore highly durable, the company effects. iD Selection has a 0.4mm PVC wear layer, whilst iD Inspiration 70 has a wear layer of 0.7mm.

John Devine, Tarkett UK sales director, says: “Hard-wearing durability has been matched with stylish, on-trend designs to offer a product that not only looks fantastic but will last, while offering users a sustainable choice. “The range is also incredibly easy to lay and maintain, delivering a saving to both project managers charged with installing the flooring and long-term users. It’s a product we’re excited about releasing to the market and we expect demand for it to be high.”

Forbo Flooring has noticed that designers cannot get enough of organic shapes and earthy palettes with warmth and texture. The company says its Novilon Nova Wood and Viva Fusion ranges are ideal to realise this look. Whether it is the appearance of unvarnished blonde woods like beech and birch or a richer oak or wengé, natural looking flooring provides the perfect foil for this trend, it says.

like Velvet Walnut from our Innova range, while reclaimed and rustic looks, like our Mode Weathered Timber and Chapel Oak, are prominent customer selections, especially in large plank formats."

Within the company's VLF products Mode, Signature, Innova and Essencia are easy to maintain and are highly durable and include varying size formats, he says. "Our design savvy customers are combining products within their interior scheme, using our VLF wood planks as a back drop to their space, softened by using rugs to define more social and relaxing zones. Rugs can add a splash of personality, rather than over personalising the vinyl floor selection with complex design borders and motifs, which can ultimately limit future design flexibility and creativity," says Mr Byrne.

"With Natural Look & Feel technology, the designs are incredibly realistic with a stunning wood texture that will remain looking fabulous. Featuring a super easy to clean surface and with a 15-year wear guarantee, Ultimate Oak really is a fantastic introduction into the benefits of cushion flooring,” Ms Hemelaer concludes.

Avenue Floors’ product manager Victoria Hemelaer, says: “UK consumers love the classic look of oak but sometimes want the practicality of cushion vinyl and with Ultimate Oak from our Touch of Class collection they can have exactly this.

Available in 5 colour matching widths: 5m, 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m, which help to reduce waste and save on costs. Brintons celebrate the Queen’s Coronation at Buckingham Palace It was a day to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation and her Majesty held a four day festival in her own garden as the key event to bring recognition not only to her remarkable reign but to the many companies that have provided her with goods and services over the last 60 years.

The sun shone brightly on the day and those that have gained the prestigious Royal Warrant gathered in the truly splendid gardens of Buckingham Palace. Among them was the carpet brand long associated with innovation and quality and which has carpeted many a prestigious residence… Brintons.

Don Coates, MD of Brintons chatting with the British Wool were delighted Duke of Wessex at the Coronation Festival. to see a major British Wool carpet manufacturer in attendance at what was an impressive collective of some two hundred UK brands from fashion to food and interior textiles to science and technology. The Royal Warrant is a time honoured tradition between trades people and the monarchy – the earliest surviving record of the Royal approval dates from 1155 when Henry II granted the Weaver’s Company a Royal Charter. Don Coates, managing director of Brintons said: “As a Royal Warrant holder, everyone at Brintons is immensely proud to have been part of this unique event attended by the worlds’ press and it was a fabulous opportunity for us to showcase our company.”

Brintons combined old and new in their exhibit - the carpet design was originally produced in 1951 for the Festival of Britain and became a quite talking point with all including the Royal visitors and the High Definition Weave technology showing a woodland backdrop that most people had to touch to convince themselves it was carpet and was truly a tribute to their design skills.

Ulster Carpets introduce new shades to Ulster Velvets

Wool also appeared in many other products on display too including fabulous interior cloths and garments and even woolly slug pellets too that apparently protect the Royal hostas from the dreaded slugs! These Royal Warrant holders all show the Royal seal of approval for naturally grown wool and all made by British manufacturers.

Manx Carpets brings back Castle Twist

Manx Carpets, has re-launched its ever popular Castle Twist with a fresh palette of plain and heather colours added with some of the old favourites in the mix too. Available in various weights, so that the consumer can select heavier and more hard-wearing weights for areas such as the hall and stairs and lighter weights for the bedrooms – offering great flexibility and practicality to the buyer and a trend which is becoming more and more popular in the market place. The range is available in three weight options - Duke, Prince and King to suit various price points and there are twelve shades including the very current shades of grey and mineral. It is available in both 4 and 5 metre widths too. All of this choice and flexibility make Castle Twist an easy choice for the price conscious consumer. 62 August 2013
