Carpet&FlooringReview Welcoming woods

Delivering impressive performance in a broad spectrum of commercial interiors, the Concept Woods vinyl flooring collection from Itec Contract Floors has been updated for 2018, with a range of hot new looks and the introduction of the T-emboss surface wear layer.

Covering the bases of classic oak and grey planks with consummate ease in familiar designs such as Tavel and Calais, Concept Woods is already a go-to collection for many contractors and specifiers, but with new Groutless Wood and Chevron Oak, it features the manufacturer’s most forward-thinking wood looks. The entire collection is also afforded the new T-emboss technology with easier maintenance, better stain-resistance, improved aesthetics – through reduced lightreflectance - and better slip-resistance. Groutless Wood is a variation on the ‘endless’ wood look, a unique take on the aesthetic that underlines vinyl flooring’s capacity to imagine natural materials in a new perspective. Available in a whitewashed and greywashed oak, it’s a striking design that mixes the popularity of seamless finishes with the warmth and familiarity of wood. In Chevron Oak, commercial interiors have access to a classic parquet look without the fuss. Creating a vintage feel, the design is available in dark grey and light grey colourways, as well as a light-natural oak. It joins the collection to give 15 wood effect vinyl floors, all with the enduring performance that comes through a Class 34 Very Heavy Commercial rating. With Hyperguard+ PUR technology, Concept Woods retains aesthetic integrity with minimal maintenance and is available in two and four-metre widths, fully-compatible with Invisiweld. In a finish such as Groutless Wood, the combination of a four-metre width and Invisiweld is crucial in maintaining the visual ethos of the floor, reducing the number of seams and making any almost impossible to spot. Concept Woods is available from distributors across the UK for fast delivery, samples are available to order on the website. T 0800 032 3970

Antiquarian updated

Featuring the stunning Antiquarian collection, as well as new introductions to mad men and Atlantic, the Louis de Poortere 2018 Woven Rug Collection is now available to retailers across the UK.

With the re-edition of some of the maker’s most iconic designs – Hadschlu, Bakhtiari and Heriz – in modern colourways and beautifully hand-distressed, Antiquarian is a stand-out range for Louis de Poortere. Already receiving widespread praise as a collection to watch for 2018, Antiquarian could prove a landmark collection for the brand. Next to that, there is a new design in the established Atlantic series, The Streak. Representing the ripples and streaks in the sandy shores of New Jersey and Long Island, as if they were abstract paintings, it’s a stylish rug in five colourways. Inspired by the world below the surface, The Cracks is the latest design to join Mad Men. A mix of straight and broken lines, of matt and shining yarns, of smooth and ragged pencil strokes; The Cracks is cloaked in the hues of Dark Pine, Deep Mine and Abyss Blue. With a unique and diverse array of 16 designs across seven themes to accommodate today’s design-aware consumer, the 2018 Woven Rug Collection is made on electronic Jacquard looms, for beautiful and intricate flatweave styles. Crafted from 100% cotton chenille or cotton-rich blends, the rugs come in a consistent 1,500g/m2 quality for lasting comfort. Available in a range of standard sizes, from 60 x 90cm up to an imposing 290 x 390cm, the Louis de Poortere 2018 Woven Rug Collection underlines the brand’s design and manufacturing excellence. NEWS Primer colour for sub-floors

F. Ball and Co. Ltd., has unveiled the latest addition to its range of popular primers, which is specially formulated to enhance the bond formed between the company’s floor levelling compounds and non-absorbent subfloors.

Stopgap P141 is designed to create a textured finish and provide enhanced bond performance between subfloor and levelling compound when applied over nonabsorbent surfaces, such as epoxy waterproof surface membranes, ceramic tiles and power floated concrete. It is particularly recommended where Stopgap 600 deep base levelling compound is applied at a thickness greater than 20mm to nonabsorbent surfaces. The strong bond created when using Stopgap P141 is better able to withstand the increased stress that thicker depths of levelling compound exert when drying. F. Ball’s newest primer also boasts impressive coverage capabilities. Applied neat, using a paint roller, five litres will cover an area of up to 65 square metres, and achieving an even coverage is aided by it being pigmented yellow, to create a visual guide for contractors. A further advantage of Stopgap P141 is its rapid-drying nature. From as little as fifteen minutes after application of the primer, subfloors are ready to receive levelling compounds. Building for growth

A newly-constructed 30,000 sq ft offsite distribution warehouse will provide customers of F. Ball and Co. Ltd. with enhanced efficiency and extend the company’s ability to maintain its next day delivery guarantee as demand for products continues to grow. The new warehouse, which is located a few minutes away from F. Ball’s Staffordshire manufacturing base, provides an additional 2,000 pallet spaces and is fully integrated into the company’s computerised management information system by a secure virtual private network. As such, despatch of next day orders can be seamlessly shared between the two sites, enabling simultaneous distribution of the full range of F. Ball products from both locations. Commenting on the new warehousing facility, F. Ball Managing Director, Mark Hughes said: “As well as providing greater flexibility and efficiency, the new warehousing will enable us to accommodate medium term growth and also ensure we can meet our delivery commitments at times of peak demand.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

NEWS Learning to care

A variety of Polysafe safety flooring products from Polyflor, the UK's commercial vinyl flooring specialist, were chosen to create a new learning environment for health and social care students at the University of Derby’s Chesterfield Campus.

Opened in 1911, the Grade II listed St Helena Building has been renovated as part of a £6.7m project for the university, led by architects Frank Shaw Associates Ltd and main contractors Henry Boot Construction Limited. Polysafe safety flooring was installed around the campus by Nottingham based contractors Diamond Flooring, including in a clinical skills suite, six bed NHSstandard mock ward and an immersive simulation suite which represent a reallife working environment for students to learn in. Polysafe Wood fx PUR vinyl safety flooring in Sun Bleached Oak was used alongside textile-effect Polysafe Arena in Steelwool in communal break areas such as the campus refectory. Polysafe Wood fx is a hard-wearing sheet vinyl flooring which combines the authentic reproduction of wood with virtually invisible aggregates to provide traction for underfoot safety without compromising the high clarity look of the floor. Polysafe Verona PUR flooring in the Dolphin Grey and Café Noir shades was selected for the mock hospital ward learning areas. The Verona range’s virtually invisible slip resistant particles and complementary tonal chips offer the high clarity look of a smooth vinyl floor with the performance of a safety floor. Designed to provide sustainable slip resistance in commercial kitchens, Polysafe Ultima flooring in Aurora Grey was also installed in the servery and food preparation areas. Tim Zijlstra, Resource Centre Manager at the St Helena Campus, commented, “We have tried to replicate the look of a real-life hospital on campus to give our students a taste of their future working environment. The choice of flooring helps add to the realism, as well as providing our students and staff with a safe environment to study in.” The Polysafe Wood fx, Arena and Verona safety flooring ranges are all fully HSE Compliant and classified as low slip potential, achieving a minimum of 36+ on the Pendulum Wet Test and meeting the 50,000 cycles abrasion test which assures slip resistance for the guaranteed life of the product. Polysafe Ultima achieves 40+ in the Pendulum Wet Test, offering enhanced slip resistance in busy kitchen environments where grease spillages may be present. Ease of maintenance in high footfall areas is important so the Wood fx, Verona and Arena product ranges are enhanced with Polysafe PUR, a cross-linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement to achieve superior cleaning benefits. BUSINESS NEWS Carpetright warnings adds to retail chill

Carpetright has lowered the temperature still further during the winter chill in UK retail that has been dominated by the serious problems at Toys R US, maplins and New Look; and disappointing news from House of Fraser and Debenhams.

All eyes are on the key Easter trading period now in the hope that the holiday weekend can inject some much needed consumer activity into the flooring sector.

On March 1, Carpetright issued their third profits warning in three months saying in their latest trading update that said sales were below UK expectations. Most significantly, the company said it has engaged “constructive discussions” with its bank lenders in order to ensure compliance with the terms of its bank facilities, but added that the banks “currently remain fully supportive”. The statement to investors said: “Trading conditions have remained difficult, characterised by continued weak consumer confidence. While the trend in the Group’s UK like-for-like sales has improved, it remains negative. Although the important Easter trading period is still to come, UK like-for-like sales remain below management expectations and the Group now expects to report a small underlying pre-tax loss for the year ending 28 April 2018.” In December, Carpetright’s share price almost halved after it reported half year profits of £300,000, compared to £4.3m in the previous year. The news is casting a shadow over carpet manufacturers, many of whom are major suppliers to Carpetright and are already under pressure from a poor first quarter’s trading, including the adverse effects of snowy weather. Carpetright have around 400 stores today compared to 600 in 2010. Both Debenhams and House of Fraser have also said they will reduce shopfloor space – citing the impact of increased wage costs due to minimum wage changes, the poor exchange rates and the increase of online purchasing.

At the John Lewis AGM in March the group reported a decline in likefor-like profits of 22% following a “challenging year” on the high street. But John Lewis have promised to “re-invent’ their retail experience for consumers. ““This is no time for a defensive crunch. Our whole game plan is to step up to this challenge and we’ll be stepping up the pace of innovation. It’s the only way to win in this market,” said chairman Charlie Mayfield.

“This is no time for a defensive crunch. Our whole game plan is to step up to this challenge and we’ll be stepping up the pace of innovation. It’s the only way to win in this market” Charlie Mayfield, chairman of John Lewis Group The most recent numbers from the Office for National Statistics said floorcovering sales have been falling for the last three months with a 0.8% decline in January.

The UK’s largest flooring distributor Headlam announced a 2% increase in sales in its full year figures ending December 31, 2017, but said UK revenue growth had slowed to 0.9%, compared to 4.2% last year. The start to 2018 has been below expectations. But chief executive Steve Wilson said: “We are pleased with our performance during 2017, having exhibited further growth against what was qualitatively viewed as an overall flat market, robustness in the face of a weaker second half of the year, and improved profitability as a consequence of our focus on efficiency initiatives.”

Avon Valley Holdings – the parent of Alternative Flooring and the Wilton Carpet Company also reported in March saying the UK sales had gone down 4.4% in the year to September 2, 2017 though turnover was up overall due to a strong performance in the EU and US. 28 April 2018

Strong future for floor tiles

Subject as it is to the influences of consumer and business spending levels, construction output and underlying economic trends, the wall and floor tiles market delivered a strong performance between 2014 and 2017 with overall growth of 8%. However, growth rates have slowed to around 2% in 2016-17 with this more modest growth scenario likely to be a feature of the market into the medium-term.

The market has benefitted from returning confidence in the housing market in terms of both new housebuilding and RMI. The “improve not move” trend continues to positively influence the market with householders often trading up to higher value products particularly for floor tiles. Improving completions volumes for new housebuilding have provided opportunities for growth but the continuing trend for upstands and painted walls in kitchens for new houses has, to some extent, limited the potential growth for wall tiles. Non-domestic applications have continued to provide strong demand. Ceramic and porcelain tiles dominate the product mix, with natural stone accounting for around a fifth value share and the others sector accounting for the remainder. Consumer demand for durable, hardwearing and easy to maintain flooring has benefited the porcelain tiles sector in particular in recent years. A degree of polarisation is still evident at the lower end of the market where white & single coloured ceramic tiles remain popular, while in the mid-upper sectors of the market there is high demand for more decorative ceramic products as well as natural stone and stone and wood effect porcelain tiles. Textures and design elements have become increasingly important within the market with continuing production and printing innovations allowing manufacturers to easily replicate the appearance of natural materials. In addition, new technologies have meant that production turn-around times have been improved which has resulted in manufacturers being able to supply limited runs of higher value products aimed at the upper end of the market. Patterns and shapes remain a key element of the market with “random lay” decorative tiles for both walls and floors increasingly offered by suppliers. The market is dominated by imports with penetration rate estimated at around 70% in 2017 with European producers dominating import supply. UK-based manufacturers are under increasing pressure and this is likely to continue as the Brexit process advances. This may result in further corporate activity such as restructuring and the moving of manufacturing bases. Prospects for the floor and wall tile market into the medium-term remain relatively optimistic with the market forecast to grow to around by 7% between 2017 and 2021. Levels of residential RMI are forecast to increase to 2021, despite the economic uncertainty, and the trend for ‘get someone in’ - rather than DIY - is expected to continue benefiting the market. The ‘Floor and Wall Tiles Market Report – UK 2017-2021 Analysis’ report is published by AMA Research, a leading provider of market research and consultancy services with over 25 years’ experience within the construction and home improvement markets. Feature

Voice of the trade Mandy Powell Flooring One/AIS Why is it worth a day away from the business to visit the Buying Groups National Flooring Show in may 2018? As the show is exclusive to members of a flooring buying group, this means that supplier’s representatives can spend valuable time talking about new products and any new initiatives. I highly recommend that all members of any flooring buying group attend the show and try and visit as many of the exhibitors as possible. The suppliers invest a lot of time and money exhibiting at this show and they really look forward to spending valuable time with all buying group retailers and recognise that retailers give up their valuable time out of their business to attend this event. The show is in a great central location in Solihull with free parking, free lunch and refreshments.

Visit the website and register to attend the show www.bgnfs.co.uk

What is the biggest single advantage of being in a buying group? PROFIT! Here at Flooring One/AIS we aim to make our members more profit in the form of additional discounts, better settlement terms, preferential prices, rebates, promotional activity throughout the year, savings on credit cards, energy pricing and retail finance. Are retailers right to worry about losing their independence? No, we recognise that independents have different flooring needs and here at Flooring One/AIS it’s our aim to support independent retailers. We offer a compendium of business support that allows members to grow their businesses and improve profitability.

Are you surprised how many retailers are not members of groups? No not really, some retailers simply do not wish to be part of a buying group and that is their choice but I do think that those retailers should think about contacting one of the buying groups as things do change and evolve and they may be surprised at the services now available.

Is there a lack of understanding of how buying groups work generally in the flooring industry? No I don’t think so, I believe that suppliers and retailers have a clear understanding of how buying groups work and it’s all down to partnership and working together. Suppliers and members that are part of a buying group value this and in general the working relationship is very good.

“I believe networking, sharing information amongst individuals or groups discussing issues good and bad, working together and seeking potential partners for different ventures i.e. regional TV advertising, is what retailers value about being part of a buying group.” Can groups get in the way of long-established supplier relationships? No I think they enhance them, I believe that this industry is built on good long established relationships and working in partnership is crucial.

How important are own-label branding and exclusive ranges to retailers given the challenge from the internet? This is very important and all independent flooring retailers can differentiate themselves from the multiples and the internet and this in turn helps the retailer protect their margin. Rebranding is a great way to show that you are offering new products and new services and is a great way to show that your business is evolving.

Rebranding also makes it more difficult for competitors to match and price check products.

Do enough members get involved in group activities and meetings? We welcome as many members as possible to be involved in all group activities, however, we do recognise that our members are very busy and time away from the business is not always possible. All members that attend any group activity here at Flooring One/AIS find it extremely beneficial.

Apart from the price discounts/margin advantages, what do you think retailers value most about buying groups. I believe networking, sharing information amongst individuals or groups discussing issues good and bad, working together and seeking potential partners for different ventures i.e. regional TV advertising, is what retailers value about being part of a buying group.

Do manufacturers regard buying groups as a force for good or a necessary evil? I do hope manufacturers regard buying groups as a force for good, it’s all about partnership, working together and going from strength to strength. Cenpac, the AIS Central Payment of Accounts, which guarantees payment to all of our approved Cenpac suppliers, is a good example of this. 30 April 2018

NEWS Art inspired with Flair

Flair has worked with the V&A to reinvigorate four classic textile designs, creating a beautiful collection of timeless and luxurious rugs that will enhance any room in the modern home. Launching in four styles with Jazz, Fanfare, Rhapsody and Honeysuckle, the V&A Inspired range features in the new Luxmi collection of premium styles available from the UK’s largest supplier of rugs.

The Victoria and Albert Museum is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance, with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity. From Owen Jones’s travel inspired decorative motif to the awardwinning Art Deco textile of Gregory Brown, every one of these exclusive designs tells a story from the V&A, and celebrates designs that have inspired generations of people in Flair’s exquisite rug craft. Whether they are crafted from wool and viscose or silk-soft chenille, handtufted and finished by skilled artisans or expertly woven on jacquard looms, these rugs are finished to the highest possible standard. The V&A, based in the heart of London on the South Kensington site for more than 160 years, was established to make works of art available to all and to inspire British designers and manufacturers. Today, the archives hold millions of amazing objects including world class collections of glass, textiles, graphics, photography, jewellery and fashion, and continue to intrigue, inspire and inform. The Honeysuckle design is taken from an original 1876 furniture textile by William Morris which features repeating patterns of tulips, honeysuckle and poppies. Handmade in India by craftsmen, this rich wool and silky viscose rug is skilfully tufted and finished to create a dense 8mm pile height. Jazz is a wool and viscose rug featuring monochrome chevrons inspired by a 1920s textile by F. Gregory Brown. The silvery sheen of the yarn cleverly accentuates the striking design. Rhapsody is an exquisite design based on a print by 19th century architect and designer Owen Jones, updated to suit the modern home. Hand loomed in Turkey, this soft-touch acrylic rug showcases the rich colour and design. Finally, Fanfare is a striking rug which draws on an original 1930s textile. Like the Rhapsody it is hand loomed in Turkey and offers the latest in environmentally friendly stain technology, while being gorgeously soft underfoot. With its bold, geometric forms and vibrant colours, Fanfare perfectly evokes the mood of Art Deco interiors. 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

With samples mounted on rigid board to demonstrate the variety of applications and finish styles, each board highlights the quality of Floorwise profiles. T 01509 673974

Marketing insights Artificial grass is flourishing No longer limited to sports facilities, the market for artificial grass continues to flourish. Many flooring retailers now see it as an integral part of their flooring offer. Homeowners view outdoor space as an extension to their indoor living space, wanting the green outdoors but with minimal maintenance. extrusion technology has enabled them to develop and market the next generation of artificial grass and improve the entire Oryzon collection resulting in even higher quality, better softness and true-to-nature colours.

Lano – Easy Lawn, Anica

Lano believe that “grass is greener than ever before”. So, for Spring/Summer 2018, Lano’s Landscaping division, is launching a range of new artificial grass qualities. Replacing Aster and Marigold, Lano has overhauled its hugely popular Easy Lawn collection with the introduction of Anica and Valeria, bringing the collection up-todate in this fast maturing market. Using a new C-shaped yarn for improved resilience in a 65% polyester and 35% polypropylene construction,Valeria provides a UV-resistant monofilament quality ideal for use in residential applications. Bringing a unique fourcolour effect in an olive shade and deep 38mm pile, the style brings a relaxed, informal look to gardens. Anica takes a four-colour yarn in a 65% polyester and 35% polypropylene construction, this time presenting a meadow green shade and shorter pile for a more elegant look. The launch of Pro Lawn demonstrates just how far the artificial grass market in the UK has come over the last few years. Providing a premium collection that offers faultless performance and lasting UV-resistant colour. All styles are available in four-metre width rolls as

standard, with two-metre wide on request. In shades of green, olive and meadow there is a Pro Lawn for every style of home. Whether tightly manicured balconies of contemporary city apartments, or the relaxed courtyard gardens of country cottages, Lano Landscaping division brings lush green lawns all year round. Beaulieu International Group is a European player in the manufacture and distribution of high-quality artificial turf. Readers’ Survey

Positive about POS? Retailers respond… Stores want new ideas to stay ahead Point-of-sale displays represent one of the biggest investments in our industry – both by the suppliers who produce them and in the floorspace that retailers are prepared to give them. In our survey, over 70% of retailers agreed POS was extremely important in motivating a sale but a surprising 86% said many manufacturers did not really understand what they needed in-store to do the job. Some 60% of our respondents all said that the general standard of POS supplied was "variable" although 25% said quality was generally high. Anecdotal reports that stores are too cluttered were backed up by our results. 52% said they felt they had too much POS in their store. In terms of what was working hardest, more than 47% of retailers confirmed that lecterns were the strongest salesman while tombolas came bottom of the list with 9% (half the appeal of wall racks and wall stands). However a reader in Kent commented: “As we are limited with space then I find tombolas very useful. Unfortunately, a large percentage of new ranges are on lecterns which only makes it increasingly difficult to accept new POS ranges.” Given the high response from readers that POS was falling short of what was required, we asked for more detail of what people really liked. Reflecting a growing trend, more than half our respondents said they liked displays with strong lifestyle or room set photography. 55% also wanted more product information to be shown on the displays. A retailer in Ireland commented: “Stand design should adapt to design trends, the old wooden display stands look dated. Better graphics or refreshed graphics on long running ranges would help keep things new and fresh.” A comment from Cumbria was: “We need brighter displays with more roomsets and product info.” In Lancashire, a reader added: “We would appreciate more bespoke displays from manufacturers and less from wholesalers which are in every other store.” A North East retailer suggested research should be carried out on the issue: “We want something different - but what? - I don't know! Can't we get a proper survey of what customers really want display wise – or more importantly, what makes them buy from POS.”

42% want rebates on their POS The Stocklists polled 1,760 retailers throughout the UK during February 2017. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.

Nearly a third of retailers have at least half of their POS as own brand or buying group branded. Across the survey, the average amount of these type of displays in store was about 30% – only about a quarter of retailers said they had only manufacturer-branded stands.

Pattern books that disappear with customers came out as a regular problem – 56% of retailers said they lost 5 or more books a year – only 20% charge a deposit to consumers. 75% said they often removed pieces from pattern books for customers to take away.

When we asked about window displays, 30% of our retailers admitted that they rarely changed it and a further 26% said only occasionally, maybe once a year.

Finally, on the vexed question of paying for point of sale, 42% said they did not expect to pay. 57% said they did expect to pay but of these, 43% said only with rebates on future sales. 16% of our sample said none of the POS in their store was paid for but across our sample, on average retailers say about 40% of all their POS is paid for.

In terms of other types of displays, 19% use large wall graphics, 18% in-store video screens and 15% mini roomsets. A third play music in their stores. Service from manufacturers and suppliers is good say retailers. 84% said they got enough sampling and 67% agreed that marketing material came quickly when new ranges were launched.

NEWS Harrogate show already ahead for 2018

The UK’s national flooring event, The Flooring Show, is in top gear getting ready for its 56th show at Harrogate in September with strong support. Stand sales are running 16% ahead of 2017, with some long-term supporters of the show increasing their stand sizes and being joined by companies returning to exhibit at the show after a break. In total 83% of 2017 exhibitors have rebooked for 2018, with more to confirm. Karndean, Furlong Flooring, Lano, Brockway, Victoria, F Ball, Ball & Young, Interfloor and Egger have all rebooked and new companies confirmed for 2018 include Floortrain, IVC, Staingard, Barth 1873, NMC UK and Home Creations.

“It’s exciting to see companies like IVC returning to the show, having not exhibited for many years, but it’s equally satisfying to be able to accommodate space increases with loyal customers like Whitestone Weavers, Cormar, Abingdon and Distinctive Flooring,” says show consultant Wendy Adams. The 2018 floorplan is being changed to accommodate the space increases, which in turn is opening new opportunities for other manufacturers to take part in the event or move halls. The show team has been out meeting with exhibitors, supporters and Trade Association teams to listen to and discuss fresh ideas for attracting even more key retailers to the show. As the testimonials from the 2017 show prove, The Flooring Show has a solid base of support throughout the industry, but it’s our job to improve the offer where we can. By working closely with the industry, we will continue to add to the show’s content and attract more visitors,” said Wendy. Widely recognised as a key sales and networking event for the flooring industry, The Flooring Show is the biggest event in the industry’s calendar. It brings together the retail and contract sectors and key industry bodies such as the Contract Flooring Association, the National Institute of Carpet & Floorlayers and the Flooring Industry Training Association and hosts the Carpet Fitter of the Year final during the show. www.theflooringshow.com

Recofloor's record-breaker

2017 was a record-breaking year for Recofloor with 563 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring collected for recycling into flooring or other products. Collections from contractors rose by 10.5% compared to last year, diverting even more vinyl flooring from landfill. Distributors and contractors signed up to Altro and Polyflor’s national vinyl flooring recycling initiative contributed an impressive 397 tonnes (71%) to last year’s total. The majority of material collected was smooth and safety vinyl offcuts (533 tonnes). Since 2009, the scheme’s 700-plus members throughout the UK and Ireland have collected 3,771 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring. This equates to 1,257,000 m2 of material that has been recycled with 3,016.80 tonnes of CO2 savings – an equivalent saving to driving around the equator 1,524 times in an average car. Commenting on the 2017 results, Recofloor’s Project Officer Joe Gardner said greater marketing efforts, including the Grand Tour visiting 63 distributors last year with accompanying website blogs, had made an impact and encouraged greater participation. One such example is Mike Doran, owner of Wigan-based MSD Flooring Ltd, who signed up to Recofloor last year after seeing the collection bins at one of his suppliers. “I felt it was a good idea to recycle the flooring – offcuts mainly - and the scheme works well for us with efficient collections,” said Mike. Praising the ‘tremendous achievement’ from Recofloor members towards the annual collection record, Joe continued: “Their incredible efforts have seen our annual collection figures grow year-on-year. We are around 10% up on what we collected throughout 2015.” Recofloor’s success in engaging with all levels of the flooring chain continues to drive the initiative, which has built up strong relationships with distributors and contractors. Recycling, versus landfilling, waste vinyl flooring can reduce collectors’ waste disposal costs by up to 70% and also benefits the environment. Recofloor also collects roll ends, LVT offcuts, loose lay and uplifted smooth vinyl.

Ten tips for top-selling stores

The striking Made in Heaven display by Balta is now rolling out to retailers across the UK. Featuring two eco-friendly, supersoft polyester styles in Angelic and Aurora, the display presents a bold look that is sure to stand-out in store. Using a new design finished in attractive purple and beautiful angel imagery, the compactfootprint Made in Heaven lectern brings a new dimension to carpet and flooring shops. “With its large 22x22” samples, this new look lectern really allows the softness and gorgeous colour palette of Made in Heaven to shine while delivering maximum visual impact,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta. “Made in Heaven, with the elegant ‘beautifully soft carpet with a hidden strength’ strapline, has been created to capitalise on the heaven-like luxury of the polyester yarn and to offer a less masculine approach to carpet branding. We’re confident these new lecterns offer something different and will help retailers by clearly communicating the benefits of this fibre that’s rapidly growing in popularity.” Made in Heaven carpets are bleach cleanable and offer really impressive stain-resistance. In a resilient two-play yarn, the eco-friendly polyester fibre is also resilient, with a 15-year wear warranty on the 2,000g/m2 Angelic. Both Angelic and Aurora are rated Heavy Domestic and come in a palette of 12 timeless neutrals and subtle pastels. T +32 56 62 22 11

1.

Ensure a large mix of standard and niche products to reassure consumers they have plenty to choose from – even if they ultimately go for something safe.

2.

Mix more expensive items with cheaper products so that the opportunity to trade up is always there – don’t place the high end products on their own or in an increasing price layout where they can be disregarded by customers.

3.

Use your window – too often this is a neglected area but a good display reassures consumers that you’re a smart retailer.

4.

Use your floor! Have the most popular of your higher margin products laid in sections of your floor. Consumers like to buy what they can see in a larger sample.

5.

Keep literature racks full – empty displays look tired and complacent and consumers like to have material to take away – and you can clip your business card to it.

6.

Create different areas for different product types so that consumers are not confused by too much on offer in the same place.

7.

Avoid an ‘industrial’ environment – too many stores are sheds with industrial roofs, lighting and ventilation on show. Use suspended ceilings, black paint and screens to hide the worst parts – the buying environment should be as domestic as possible.

8.

Use soft furnishing, furniture items and flowers around the flooring displays to create a homely environment.

9.

Avoid empty racks, dead bulbs and dark video screens.

10. Be careful about locating roll stock – very often it has a prominent position and lures consumers past the higher margin material. Consumers not only know it’s cheaper but the large area helps them visualise it in their own home which is more challenging with small samples.

Flower on Flooring Increasing the sustainability credentials of flooring With concerns for the environment growing, the need to improve recycling rates and reduce waste is seeing a number of initiatives within the flooring industry.

Takeback schemes encouraged by Carpet Recycling UK are helping its retailer and contractor members to avoid landfilling carpet waste, for instance, promoting sustainability initiatives to customers while reducing disposal costs.

“It isn’t all doom and gloom though, especially for the flooring industry,” the company continues. “With improvements in technology there are now even more carpet recycling innovations available which have made the cost of recycling less than landfill.”

As well as being used as a fuel for waste to energy plants, carpet waste can also be converted into materials for underlay and equestrian flooring. Kenburn Waste management not only supplies the Kenburn Carpet Crusher for compacting waste, it also conducts free surveys to establish the financial and environmental benefits of recycling carpet and underlay waste.

Brintons explains that it offers eco-friendly underlay to complement its luxury carpets. Brinfelt is a felt and crumb rubber underlay which is made using the recycled yarn and thread waste from Brintons’ carpet manufacturing, and the rubber crumb part is created from recycled tyres.

Examples include an efficient recycling service provided by CRUK member The Carpet Bureau in London consolidating carpet waste from several local retailers then baled using a Kenburn Carpet Crusher and used as an alternative fuel for cement kilns.

Installing a Kenburn baler at its Wincanton premises has helped Cullingford Carpets and Interiors recycle more than 220 tonnes of carpet and underlay since becoming a CRUK member in July 2015. Director Stewart Cullingford says: “Our Takeback scheme enables us to achieve the aims of our environmental policy to increase the amount we recycle. Plus, it really sets us apart from other carpet retailers in the area.”

Latest Carpet Recycling UK figures show that 168,000 tonnes of carpet waste in the UK were reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2017.

Brinfelt underlay by Brintons

It is also keen to help retailers and homeowners responsibly dispose of end of life carpets so the company has recently joined CRUK, which works to increase the recycling of carpet waste across the UK.

Brintons group commercial director David Penn says: “We are fully committed to continually improving the products and services we offer to all of our customers while minimising any negative environmental impacts or safety risks. We already recycle our yarn and thread waste to create our Brinfelt underlay and look forward to working with CRUK to further improve our business”.

Granorte says the cork industry has worked hard to reuse all of its waste in a range of by-products such as flooring, furniture, wall coverings, fabrics and sanitary ware. The process uses the same raw material used to make wine-stoppers, meaning it is easy to take the waste without any high-impact conversion or extraction.

Recycling uses two main methods – granulation and agglomeration – both of which produce different end products. Granulation uses all the waste where the offcuts are milled into cork grains of several dimensions, sorted by size and weight and used in industries from construction to high-tech or agriculture.

Kenburn at Fineweave in Reading

Kenburn Waste Management says that to help to enable the Government to reach a landfill diversion target of 50% by 2020, landfill tax increased on 1st April. This will, of course, mean skip costs will also have to be increased. Over the past ten years landfill costs have increased by a staggering 250%. 48 April 2018

To make agglomerated cork, a binder is mixed with the cork grains and compressed into blocks. The type of cork grain, the type of binder and the amount of pressure determines the type of agglomerate; soft and low-density for insulating materials, hard and high-density for flooring.

Since the 1950s, Polyflor states it has recycled its post production waste vinyl. Although the flooring industry is not bound by law to recycle waste, the company is seeking to recover and recycle its post consumer waste vinyl flooring to minimise the flooring industry’s environmental impact and close the loop of products’ life cycles.

by Dennis Flower

The company is a co-founding and funding member of Recofloor, the waste vinyl flooring recycling scheme available throughout the UK. By providing an accessible and efficient facility for waste vinyl to be reclaimed and recycled, Recofloor helps prevent post-consumer waste from going to landfill.

Emotions Primus from Granorte

Polyflor states its vinyl flooring is 100% recyclable, so is recovered and recycled into new flooring or other useful products such as traffic cones. Through Recofloor, the company can recycle installation offcuts, smooth uplifted flooring and old stock rollends and samples.

Plastic pollution is a highly topical issue for British industry and no sector is unaccountable for the sustainability of products, says Packexe.

“making our products 100% recyclable has been a key achievement which helped us gain our Royal Warrant. However, the industry is still missing the point on durability,” the company explains.

most protection films are only intended for short-term use and need replacing throughout the job. This is why the company has formulated adhesives that last for up to six weeks, sufficient for the whole job.

Another overlooked recycling issue is traceability, it continues: “Quite often clear films end up in landfill, but we stamp our logo on our products so people can find out how to recycle them. It’s high time the protection film industry took a more responsible attitude to their products and Packexe is proud to be leading the way.”

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 56

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2018

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

Metro Group www.carpet1st.co.uk Contact: Jill Coward Tel: 01204 393539 jillcoward@carpet1st.co.uk

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 58

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

F L O O R I N G FAC T S H E E T WOOL FIBRE

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain. British wool is bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to a carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 Wool Rich – Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Benefits of Wool Carpet 1. Practical

4. Internal Environment

Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

2. Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

3. Safety

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

5. Eco/Environmental

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 65
