Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size.Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc).To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING

The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

8

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

THE STOCKLISTS September 2010

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’.This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms. CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST C ARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL C ARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfor t Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Why join?

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. www.smg-group.co.uk Contact: David Lewis Tel: 0118 932 3832 info@smg-group.co.uk

Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 271315 rjmoore65@googlemail.com moore@smartercarpets.com

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which…

www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group.

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use.

• Check out the product ranges offered including the own-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want.

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales • ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional ser vices • Business services • Financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings • Regional workshops • Supplier presentations • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will...

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

• Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

INVITATION We’d be delighted if all our customers, old and new, joined us for a glass of bubbly on our stand at the Harrogate Flooring Show. It’s 25 years this month since we became a UK limited company, which we think is good enough reason for a celebration. You’ll find us in our usual spot but with a new stand number – C25. And as well as giving you a glass to sip from, hopefully we will have the chance to introduce you to all our new sales team and show you some of our great new products – including the Alpine Collection, the additions to our striped Tube Collection, and our new Aquarius and Taurus contract qualities.

Dressing up our samples We’re rather pleased with our new sample wallets (shown here). We send out a lot of carpet samples (maximum of two only, please!) to consumers on behalf of our retailers and we hope you agree it’s nice to present them so professionally.

See you there!

Farewell to Ann… Hello to Joanne and Natalie AQUARIUS

THE AGE OF AQUARIUS IS UPON US Our new contract qualities are ideal for the care market. Both designs are made from our own Edelon Protect polypropylene two ply yarn, with its fantastic resistance to fading, bleaching and fading and Gelbac backing. Both cut pile, Aquarius is a plain carpet, Taurus a two-tone – both in 11 colour options.

CAREFREE - the stunning new collection available to view at Harrogate Stand C1

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to. Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland. A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line. As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others. Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours. Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of their product range to consumers with market-leading point-of-sale systems incorporating the latest video technology. Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

Shimmer on show A stunning new creation that combines a deep cut pile with a high and a low gloss two-tone yarn to capture the light, Bahia is the latest carpet to hail from innovator Vorwerk Carpets.

The texture captures a playful spirit while a sophisticated colour palette of 10 shades running from striking black, deep greys and brown through to golden tones and white, each enhanced with a tonal fleck that either co-ordinates or contrasts.

Made from 100% nylon for durability, ease of maintenance and a beautifully soft handle, Bahia is available in a four-metre width and comes backed by a five-year guarantee. Rated LC 3 Luxury Class, Bahia reinforces Vorwerk Carpets’ position as a manufacturer of design-led carpets for the home. “At Vorwerk Carpets we are committed to bringing retailers carpets that really offer something different from the masses,” comments Ian Hammond, Sales Director UK,Vorwerk Carpets. “Our collections offer unique interpretations, playing with elements such as gloss, colour, yarn thickness, yarn length and structure, to provide new levels of depth and structure.

“Bahia continues this trend and fully exploits the adaptability of nylon. The different tones work perfectly with the different lustres to give a speckled shimmer to the carpet, opening a visual texture that is brought to reality by an long enveloping twist pile.”

Bahia features in the new Vorwerk Carpet Collection boxes available to retailers across the country. T 020 7096 5090

West Country wool Award winning Cormar Carpets has added a new range to its extensive portfolio of Wool Twist carpets.

The high quality West Country range is a multi-weight 60oz and 50oz natural flecked berber twist carpet made from 80% pure new wool, 15% polypropylene and 5% tuftbond polyester. To give a sharper, luxurious pile surface the collection is triple sheared and like many of its other wool twist qualities, West Country is branded under the British Wool Crook mark, as well as being available in both 4m and 5m widths. The palette of 15 natural flecked heather shades includes a core of the ever popular beiges and neutrals as well as some new muted natural tones of purple, pink and grey (Mauve, Redwood & Gunmetal).

“For many independent retailers wool twist is still the biggest seller and their preferred choice, so it makes sense to constantly be looking to innovate and improve the available options,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “And since wool is centre stage during the Autumn with the Wool Week scheduled for the second week in October, it’s a good time to promote a new British Wool range from a totally ‘British Made’ manufacturer.”

West Country is expected to retail at circa £26 per sq m for the 50oz quality and around £32 for the 60oz pile weight version. T 01204 881234

Designers for winders Stairrods (UK) has introduced the new Universal stair rod bracket, which is designed for fitted and runner carpets on winder stairs.Typically, standard brackets do not fit flush to the edge of a runner on winder steps, whereas the Universal bracket, which attaches to the riser only, can be simply turned on its single screw fixing, for a neat, smart finish.

The Universal bracket is made from solid brass and is available in seven finishes: polished, satin and antique brass, black, chrome, satin nickel and pewter, and is suitable for both stair runners and fitted carpets. The new brackets are sold in pairs and are designed for any circular rods, up to 1⁄2” (12.5mm) diameter.

Previously, fitting stair rods to a winder invariably caused problems, as a standard two screw, hinged bracket, which attaches to tread and riser, cannot be fixed so that it follows the edge of the carpet, often resulting in one end of the bracket having to be tucked under the edge of a runner, or ugly, irregular gaps between carpet and bracket. The new Universal bracket provides a smart solution every time, whatever the make of stair rod. The Universal bracket will be on the Stairrods (UK) stand. T 01207 591176 40 September 2010

Harrogate 2010

Harrogate starts on its £13m future A ‘Ground Breaking’ ceremony of the new exhibition halls at Harrogate International Centre (HIC) by the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate, Councillor Bill Hoult marks the official start of building work on a £13 million expansion on the site.

Stuart Quin, HIC Director: “I am delighted to be a part of this exciting regeneration programme and the benefits of this new scheme will be far reaching for all concerned. This growth will increase capacity and allow for bigger events to expand, whilst improving the flexibility of the existing facilities. “We will now be able to offer not just additional exhibition space but spaces capable of hosting larger experiential events, banquets, corporate productions and product launches than ever before. This will in turn enable us to attract and host an even wider range of national and international events benefiting the whole town.”

The development includes two new event halls totalling 3,300 square metres. Providing an extra 20% capacity, and with its improved flexibility, it will allow multiple events to run alongside each other. New features also include a banqueting facility for up to 1500 guests, an underground car park and, most noticeably, an enlarged and prominent spectacular new entrance.

Harrogate Flooring Show organisers David Wildman and Wendy Adams were at the ceremony with Wendy (pictured right) lending a hand to get the building works underway.

Breaking new ground! Wendy Adams of the Harrogate Flooring Show team gets stuck in.

The Centre will also achieve the goal of a BREEAM (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) ”excellent rating” through the inclusion of such things as a green roof; use of sustainable fuels to propel heating and electric requirements; rainwater harvesting and other similar measure to minimise any environmental impacts.

This development, which is being constructed by the Wates Group, will enhance Harrogate’s international reputation as a leading destination for events, whilst visually complementing the town’s reputation for beauty. The exterior of the existing site (The Kings Road Side) will also be enhanced by a tree-lined boulevard entrance and a vibrant outdoor covered ‘piazza style’ dining area.

This development is scheduled to complete by autumn 2011.

“This is a great day for Harrogate and ensures that the flooring industry is going to benefit from a state-of-the-art exhibition venue.” Harrogate Flooring Show organiser David Wildman

The development has been supported by Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, which has part funded the £13 million expansion plan along with Harrogate Borough Council.

Attending the event, Linda Pollard, Deputy Chair of Yorkshire Forward said: “We have invested in these improvements to Harrogate International Centre so that its facilities can continue to compete with other conference centres both nationally and internationally and bring conferences and events to the region. It will help safeguard the substantial business tourism economy which has long been a staple feature of the Harrogate district and raise the profile of Yorkshire and Humber as the place to do business.”

Inspired by nature Ecovise introduces ‘Eco home’ concept with environmentally friendly 100% natural carpets in plains, stripes and runners. These exclusive designs in luxurious velvet finish are beautifully created to cater for design-savvy consumers. It is unique and rare that a carpet is made 100% with all natural material like undyed woollen yarn woven in cotton and jute and with backing of natural latex. All of these materials are biodegradable and come from sustainable sources. It is a natural advantage as the beautiful designs in stripes and subtle neutral tone colours are created with a conscience that it has minimal impact on environment. Ecovise say their carpets are entirely different from any other woollen carpets made today that claim to be natural. They maintain that many of these carpets contain a synthetic material whether it be on the yarn (chemical dyes, moth proofing, stain resistant) or synthetic backing. The company commented: “It is a common practice by a lot of companies now days to do “green washing” by claiming to produce carpets by recycling the non renewable plastic bottles. We feel synthetics are not sustainable and therefore not eco friendly. We therefore only use naturally pure material in our carpets thus making them truly environment friendly.”

Ecovise is keen to expand business and are looking forward to meeting new contacts at the Harrogate Flooring Show. T 077 66 49 40 60

PU on parade Carpenter, one of the world’s largest producers of underlay, will exhibit its comprehensive range of PU underlays at Harrogate 2010 – including two new heavy density products Extrastep and Ultrastep. Since entering the UK market less than four years ago, Carpenter has become a significant player in the underlay sector. Extrastep is a 6mm thick polyurethane underlay, specifically developed for the North European domestic and UK contract markets, and conforms to IMO certification.

Ultrastep is the same heavy density polyurethane but is 9mm thick and has been created for top end retailers and contractors. Like Extrastep it can be used for both stretch-fit and doublestick installations. At 180kg per cubic meter, these two products are probably the heaviest density carpet underlays available.

Light and durable, Carpenter PU underlays offer a serious alternative to heavier rubber products. They are made from recycled foam and are fully recyclable. T 01457 861141

The British Wool column Support grows for the biggest celebration of wool in history Wool Week is already being lauded as the ‘biggest celebration of wool in history’ by Ian Hartley, CEO of the British Wool Marketing Board. “Every day this event is gathering momentum and we are seeing some really creative retailing put behind planned activities,” he said. As Savile Row puts sheep on its sartorial street, a knit-graffiti event through yarn-bombing is planned at various landmarks to make an original wool statement. A classy fashion week pre-event Ian Hartley, CEO of the BWMB in September is intended to show just how wool can be a stylish addition to the wardrobe and will showcase stunning designer garments and beautiful interior products. “We want all retailers to take this opportunity and make Wool Week their event. Many large retailers are running special consumer events and promotions and this is exactly the way to involve your customers. It is about selling more wool, educating about wool and beating the drum for the wool textile industry.” POS for the campaign is currently being ordered by manufacturers so that they can distribute to their retailers. Labels for wool product are also available. “A variety of in-store marketing aids are available through manufacturers that have partnered with the Campaign and this is all intended to help highlight the message for wool,” said Ian. “The logo itself is very easily identified – the green sheep now complete with the campaign’s Patron HRH The Prince of Wales beneath it – is a clear brand for wool – we hope retailers will use it proudly.”

Cormar launch another British classic with West Country Award winning Cormar Carpets has added a new range to its extensive portfolio of Wool Twist carpets. West Country is expected to retail at approximately £26 per m2 for the 50oz quality and around £32 for the 60oz pile West Country by Cormar Carpets in British Wool. weight version.

British Wool at the Harrogate Flooring Show

The team from British Wool may not be on the show floor this year but they are hosting an event to promote the benefits of wool and also the Campaign for Wool. The event will be held in The Queen’s Suite at 3.00pm on the Monday and will last for approximately 45 minutes. “We really hope that retailers take the time to pop along, there is a lot to talk about and some great marketing opportunities with Wool Week,” said Bridgette Kelly, Public Relations Manager at the BWMB. Retailers will also be able to collect some About Wool brochures and show cards.

‘Slow’ sales for volume

Domo deal boosts Balta

Results from two of the UK’s volume floor sellers reflected ongoing tough trading after Carpetright reported a sales drop and franchise United Carpets spoke of “slow trading”.

The much anticipated consolidation of the European flooring industry has taken a major step forward with the announcement of Balta’s acquisition of Domo Floorcoverings.

Carpetright who have more than 500 stores in the UK saw sales drop by 3.4% in the 13 weeks to July 31.

Chairman Lord Harris said he was ‘cautious’ about the outlook. “We expected consumer demand across Europe to remain subdued and this view is reflected in the announcement [of these results].”

But analysts are still expecting Carpetright to improve profitability a little with follower Andrew Wade of Numis forecast pre-tax profits of £31 million, up from £29.9 million. “Carpetright remains a high quality business but it will take longer to climb out of the recession than we would have hoped,” he said. United Carpets - Britain’s second largest carpet and flooring retail actually improved performance in the year to March, posting a £27m profit - that’s a 7.3% lift on last year while sales turnover only rose 2.5%.

Chief executive Paul Eyre spoke of “slow trading” in 2010 so far and commented: “The market environment remains challenging with little improvement in volume across the housing market and an understandable sense of caution amongst consumers given the continuing economic uncertainty.”

The acquisition, expected to be approved by the competition authorities later this month, will strengthen Balta’s market leading position by adding Domo’s flooring turnover of c. £150m (€170m) to create a group with total sales approaching £600m (€700m). While strengthening Balta’s existing position in broadloom carpet, the acquisition will add carpet tiles and needlefelt to the Balta portfolio and extend their polypropylene yarn and fibre capability.

Jules Noten, CEO Balta Group: "This is a splendid opportunity for us. Until today Balta had no activities related to carpet tiles and needle felt. This will open up a whole new world of products and distribution channels.

“For broadloom carpet, our residential customers have chosen collections by Balta, ITC and Domo Floorcoverings and with these various collections we can tap into the strengths and geographical complementarity of each of these business units, without neglecting to harvest the potential synergies operationally." The Stocklists reported at the end of last year that Domo would be a likely candidate after Balta issued an invitation to its competitors to join forces to overcome the economic downturn that has placed serious pressure on the viability of key companies in the sector.

At the time, Geert Vanden Bossche of Balta said there was a ‘perfect storm’ of economic factors operating against the sector in Europe. “It is a very serious situation and we believe some consolidation is needed. We have sent out a signal that we are interested in joining forces,” he said in November. Balta is a major supplier to Carpetright amongst others and have admitted that their sales growth is at the expense of margins as the mix has moved to lower average prices, combined with exchange rate issues.

The acquisition will add more than 700 people to Balta’s workforce to create a headcount of about 4,000 in plants mainly in Belgium but also in Turkey and the US.The company has said “employment will be sustained” after the move. Jules Noten added: "Balta Group shall adapt the organization of operations in order to focus in the most efficient manner on the best possible product-market combinations and the implementation of synergies.” T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com

Bigger Balterio Balterio have announced a major investment of 12 million Euros in its production base in Sint-Baafs-Vijve, Belgium. The move will increase the actual annual production capacity by almost 50% from 20.000.000 m2 to nearly 30.000.000 m2

The investment programme covers the implementation of a state of the art quality control system, adjustments to the production lines for a more flexible service to customers for an even better and faster delivery; and increases in productivity.

There are also new funds in the budget for research & development within the framework of product innovations and for a broader and deeper market penetration of the brand through a highly flexible Balterio Point of Sales presentation system.

Duttons rescue and ‘Renewal’ The anticipated management buy-out of Duttons Carpets has been confirmed and hailed as “the best outcome possible” by former MD John Wright after the company was forced to call in the receiver on July 9.

Mr Wright has acquired all the stock, assets and order book of Duttons from the adminstrators through his existing company Renewal Carpet Tiles based at the same premises in Mill Hill, Blackburn. “The customers have given us great support and they will not notice any difference,” he said. “Now we just want to get on with what we do best.” The deal protects some 115 jobs at Duttons.

Flower on Flooring The whole story

by Dennis Flower Solent Wholesale's new, purpose-built warehouse

Depth of choice and prompt service are two of the mainstays of wholesale flooring suppliers, which have evolved through the need of retailers to offer these same facilities to their customers. Stocklists spoke to a number of established wholesale businesses to see how their operations had developed in recent years. Founded by Brian Boocock in 1978 in a small unit near Warrington, Supertex Furnishing operated to a simple, initial business model. Rolls of clearance products were sourced from manufacturers of carpet and vinyl on the principle of 'stack it high and sell it cheap'.As the business expanded, larger warehouse premises were purchased in Leyland Lancashire.

Supertex offers more than 85 cut-length ranges

Supertex is now run by Brian's son, Haydn Boocock and Andrew Bramall, offering over 85 regular cut length ranges and providing a next day delivery service to most North West regions, plus regular deliveries to Stoke on Trent, Birmingham,West Yorkshire and Ireland. The company states it is one of the North West's leading independent wholesalers, providing an efficient service on quality products whilst remaining competitive in the market place. Clearance products are still available, but its cut length service continues to expand and remains the focus for the future.

STS Flooring Distributors has been established for 45 years, with five depots located in Orpington, Croydon,Watford,Thame and Cambridge, covering London and the South East, South of England, South Midlands, west to Gloucester and Avon and east into East Anglia, offering next day delivery of stocked products.Whilst it is widely known for its contract flooring expertise, its procurement of Bodigians three years ago has allowed STS to expand into the retail market. The company now stocks leading brands including Cormar, Lano,Telenzo Ball & Young and Interflor, as well as all accessories.

Solent Wholesale reports it has been one of the largest independent distributors of floorcoverings in the South of England for some time and continues to be family owned and run. Now under the control of the second generation, Claire Crooks and Simon McHale have learnt the business from the bottom rung of the ladder. This has given them a good understanding of what customers want. The core of the business is middle to top end domestic product, especially plain 80/20 twists.

The company states its ranges have been increasingly supplemented with well made, competitive mid-to-budget priced products to meet the demands of the current economic situation. Spare capacity in Solent Wholesale's new, purpose-built warehouse allows it to take advantage of special offers and promotions which can then be passed on to customers. Solent states that retailers have become increasingly aware of the disparity in prices being asked by large wholesalers, compared with those of independent distributors, with the availability of fewer products making comparisons

easier. The challenge of the recession for the company has been to find the right products, at the right price and deliver them on time. 'Our aim is simple – we want to be the best at what we do,' said Simon McHale. Solent will be hosting an Open Day on the afternoon of Thursday 16th September, to which all customers are invited.

Rackhams is another wholesaler that has had to tackle the recession, choosing an ambitious programme of product development that has virtually involved changing its entire product portfolio over the last 24 months. It is approaching its tenth anniversary since absorbing the former E G Rackham & Co Ltd and service continues to be of great importance, irrespective of fluctuations in sales volumes, it states. Next day delivery and best sample solutions continues to be offered to all customers, with ongoing product improvements for both retailers and contractors. Its mainstay continues to be cut length broadloom and carpet tiles, with high quality laminate a more recent addition. The company employs both internal and external sales staff to provide independent clients with a comprehensive service. Its most recent addition has been the Carpets of Simplicity range of inexpensive product, extending its coverage to all price points. 'A balance between service and fair pricing are, we feel, the key to maintaining our profile and presence in the market place,' the company states.

Rackhams rack ‘em up for a fast response to customers

Faithfull Floorcoverings has a respected reputation within both retail and contract sectors and has recorded considerable activity recently, with the opening of a Walthamstow warehouse and trade counter, along with the moving of its Dartford trade counter to larger premises, with both sites strategically situated for easy access to the M25 and London for customers that wish to collect their goods. Company Feature: Axminster Carpets

Hungry for growth

Picasso Snowdrop/Black

Matisse Golden Globe Axminster is ambitious. The company is on a mission to re-invent itself from quality traditionalist to quality trendsetter and is marching forward on all fronts – product development, consumer promotion and retailer support.

“We are being aggressive and we are pushing for a substantial step forward in market share. We have to get this right” says Steve Upperton, sales director (pictured above right with the new POS displays).

The programme of product development is well established. Already, the company reports that 25% of its sales today come from products that did not exist two years ago.

The major launch of Princetown is an example.“I can’t remember the last time we did something this big and we are really pleased with the reaction.” says Steve. There are 14 new axminsters across the ranges in three designs – elegant Picasso, ethnic Matisse and arty Mondrian.

The campaign is centred around the new brand launched in 2009 when the logo was given a fresh look but critically the marketing strapline was changed to Natural. British. Beautiful. “We want to change perceptions,” says Steve. “Axminster has immense recognition for quality but we want to ensure Axminster is synonymous with ‘design’ rather than with ‘old-fashioned’.

“This won’t be achieved in a three month campaign. It is a long-term objective but we would like to think we have shifted perceptions in three years time,” he said.

Steve likens the Axminster brand to AGA cookers or Jaguar – quality British products that have a great heritage but have re-invented themselves to remain contemporary and relevant. 62 September 2010

“We have to make the flooring market fashionable – it has to be more about design and colour and less about price,” he says. The announcement of a consumer advertising campaign last month is another angle of attack. The campaign will be using high quality roomset photography to let the product values speak for themselves in ten of the leading home interest titles – a target audience of eight million readers.

Retailer involvement is seen as vital to the development of the brand. “The retailer is key.You can do all the right things but consumers are easily confused by carpet – they need advice and support,” says Steve. Axminster worked closely with retailers while developing the new displays and trialled the concept in 22 stores – the objective was to ensure they were “easy to sell from”. After some further tweaks, the company is about to start rolling out the finished product. “The store experience is vitally important in the way consumers see the brand,” says Steve. And he intends that they see more and more of it! T 01297 630650 www.axminstercarpets.co.uk

Burmatex eco award The continuous efforts made by Burmatex to develop environmental codes of best practice in the manufacturing and product design of sustainable carpet tiles, was validated recently when it won the coveted environmental and social impact award at an event for the commercial interiors industry, held in London recently.

retailers respond to industry issues

How’s Harrogate for you? This month’s survey will be about the Harrogate Flooring Show. If you are not going, please go online and complete the survey right now (there’s a section for non-visitors). If you are attending, please wait until after your visit so that you can complete that section of the questionnaire after you have attended. We’ll also be asking people at the show to complete the survey ‘offline’. After the turmoil of 2010 with competing shows changing dates and cancelled events, the flooring trade stayed loyal to Harrogate and to organiser David Wildman who stepped in ‘by popular demand’ to make it happen again in the Yorkshire spa town.

How happy are you with Harrogate? Is it worth it? And how would you like to see the event improve?

If you didn’t go (or aren’t planning to) we’d like to hear why not? Is the location a problem? Aren’t trade shows relevant to your business any more? Can’t you afford time out of your store? What might persuade you to visit?

If you are going, let us know afterwards what the organisers got right and what they got wrong. Did manufacturers do enough to make you more optimistic about the business for the fourth quarter. What caught your eye?

Most importantly, how should this show – and the new flooring hall at the Interiors show In January – develop to fulfil their main objective: to boost your business.

Company Feature: Thomas Hopkinson

The store stylists Triple King is at the heart of a quiet revolution that is transforming the sales environment for thousands of flooring stores across the UK. Effective point-of-sale display has become an art, a science and a service.

Retail ‘real estate’ is the buzz word for manufacturers who increasingly regard point-of-sale as one of the most critical aspects of their approach to the market. But it’s an expensive investment that manufacturers can’t afford to get wrong. But good news in a recent survey in The Stocklists revealed 65% of retailers thought POS was getting better and merchandising services were getting smarter.

That’s the difference with Triple King, the brand name of Thomas Hopkinson. Not only has their design approach to presenting carpet and smooths samples been getting increasingly stylish and innovative, they’ve wrapped up the whole merchandising service into a package that can transform a store.

“We know floor space is at a premium in store and our job is to make every inch of a sales unit work hard for the manufacturer and the retailer with maximum appeal to the consumer...” “When our vehicle arrives on site we can do the whole thing,” says director Ian Peers. “We’ve designed and manufactured the units, we install them, we load them with sampling – and we go back to keep them up-to-date.”

Attention to detail and new developments are key to success in this competitive sector. For example,Triple King have just introduced a speedy service to turn laminate or flooring planks into easy-to-use swatches, complete with printed information and graphics.

This full service approach has been welcomed by manufacturers and Triple King works with leading companies such as: Georgian,Victoria, Manx, Fells Carpets, Edel Telenzo, Cormar, MCD, Calverts, United Carpets and Cavalio.

The company’s business is based centrally in Bradford where the 40,000 square feet operation centre includes design, manufacturing and storage. The company offers lecterns, waterfalls, wall systems and so on but it has been their creative response to custom design projects that has earned it so many supporters.

“We know floor space is at a premium in store and our job is to make every inch of a sales unit work hard for the manufacturer and the retailer with maximum appeal to the consumer,” says Ian. “We bring a lot of experience and, equally, a lot of new ideas to every project.” Peter Kimmins, General Sales Manager at Georgian Carpets can confirm. “We like working with Triple King. We’re very happy with the style but we also appreciate the durability we get from their units which is so important,” he says. T 01274 582056

Company Feature: Interfloor

Bouncing ahead While the economy is still reporting slow growth in the UK, one company has seen a significant upturn with more than 500 new customers in the past year. Interfloor has invested heavily in a campaign to build awareness of the benefits of sponge rubber and crumb rubber underlay. The Campaign for Real Underlay has been active through the trade press, direct marketing, email, web and point of sale. It has been highly successful in promoting the benefits that rubber underlay offers in terms of consumer preference, performance and enhanced “sellability.”

…we can help retailers sell more underlay and get better margins in these tough times “As a result, we’ve seen an increase in customers buying rubber underlay and the growth in some of our premium products, such as Tredaire Colours Red and Duralay Kensington Deluxe, has been outstanding,” says sales director Gary Cowley.

“Another reason for the company’s recent success is that they are helping the retailer to increase their sales by selling more products to consumers who wouldn’t normally have purchased an underlay. “Rarely does the consumer ask for an underlay product by name, although they do have some recognition of the brands, especially Tredaire and Duralay. We’ve provided point of sale stands, as part of our Profit Ability programme, so that consumers can stand on the underlay and feel for themselves the quality and the difference which a superior product adds to a new carpet. “This not only makes customers more likely to buy a new underlay, but also more likely to buy a better quality product.”

Interfloor has worked with hundreds of retailers, via the Interfloor Profit Ability programme, to help them sell more underlay. More than 80%

have increased volumes by 10% or better – some by as much as 100%.

“At Interfloor we can help retailers sell more underlay and get better margins in these tough times. Of course the recession has affected the volumes which retailers have been able to sell, but by offering a better selection and selling in the benefits to the consumer, we are starting to see a real difference in volumes– plus the consumers love the products.” And if that wasn’t enough, the company exports to over 70 countries as far afield as Russia, Africa, the Middle East and China. Interfloor rubber underlay is the preferred choice of many of the world’s leading hotel groups including Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, Intercontinental, Hyatt and Jumeirah.

“They will only choose the very best and we’re delighted that they choose Interfloor. One of the most high profile customers includes the latest major five star hotel in Dubai, The Atlantis, with around 1,500 rooms, which has more than 100,000 square metres of Interfloor rubber underlay. But we had already supplied underlay for the seven star Burj Al Arab, and the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. We are also replacing underlay in all of the mosques in Abu Dhabi.”

“We expect Tredaire to become the number one brand for PU in the next 12 months” Gary Cowley At the same time Interfloor has been beefing up its PU capacity. “Our role is to manufacture and market the underlay products that customers need. There has been an increase in the demand for PU and we have responded in a big way. Our manufacturing plant in Dumfries has introduced a new, state-of-the-art line to produce our PU. We’ve increased our range of Tredaire PU underlays to eight, the latest of which, Tredaire Contract 9, is an ultra high density 9mm domestic underlay suitable for double stick applications. We’ve overtaken the number two manufacturer and at our current rate of growth we expect Tredaire to become the number one brand for PU in the next 12 months.” But the story isn’t just about underlay. Interfloor also provides more than 800 flooring accessory products including carpet gripper, profiles, adhesives, tapes and fitting tools. Interfloor is the only manufacturer of carpet gripper in Europe, through its Gripperrods product. “And we have also invested heavily in this product too.” said Gary. “We have changed and improved the product’s look and quality so that it is now the best performing gripper product in the UK. We’re the only manufacturer to use Russian birch – the best type of plywood for

gripper due to its superior strength and consistency. There is competition from plywood made from poplar but we don’t recommend this as it’s softer and more prone to “bowing”.”

Interfloor, the only wholly UK-owned underlay manufacturing company, has also made customer service a priority. “One reason why the company is going from strength to strength is because we listen to what our customers are telling us and then act on it. We identified opportunities to improve the speed and responsiveness of our delivery service, to extend our product range and to provide enhanced marketing support to our customers; ” says Cowley. “We have made significant improvements to our customer offering, and that includes a faster response time to orders, greater flexibility, and an updated fleet. All of our tractor units are now less than a year old, with most of the trailers having also been replaced. With fuel efficiencies, lower emissions and a tracker system to enable timed routes, deliveries can be accurately timed to maximise convenience for our customers. “Interfloor is a very solid business, built on many years of trading, but we actually care about the products we supply and about the service we give to our customers. Customer service is of paramount importance, as is the range of products and offering value for money.”

Gary has been at Interfloor, and previously Tredaire, for eleven years and he sees the improvements in marketing support and customer service. “We’ve listened and we have worked hard to improve our service. We believe that we offer more value to our customers because we can give them the brands, products, suppor t and marketing customer service to help their businesses thrive. At the end of the day that’s what really matters.”

Penta performs

Underfloor hots up

This autumn sees the launch of Penta, the latest floor from i-tec contract floors.

A new report from MTW Research has found that the under floor heating industry experienced unprecedented growth towards the end of 2009, as the market became increasingly reliant on smaller projects within the domestic market. In light of these developments Ambient Electrical, are offering their industrial forecasts for the next six months.

Drawing inspiration from an architectural colour palette, Penta comprises five design categories, with contemporary interpretations of wood, stone and metal styles, joining Fantasy and Trend to deliver cutting-edge styles at every level.

Providing performance in a diverse range of locations from offices and retail environments, to schools, public buildings and healthcare establishments, Plano is part of the itec33 collection, achieving a class 33 rating for use in demanding environments.

The two-mm thick supercompact PVC sheet floor features a 0.55mm wear layer for high levels of durability and can be welded at the seams to create impervious floor coverings. Featuring Superguard Purtechnology for ease of maintenance and improved wear resistance, Penta is also 100% recyclable, making it ideal for locations looking for the advantages of vinyl flooring in a product that is environmentally sound.

“Penta is engineered to perform and has been designed to provide a variety of locations with a floor that is hardwearing and easy to maintain and its diverse aptitude is reflected in the variety of styles it offers,” comments Christ Taveirne, product manager Itec Contract Floors. “Whether it’s an office looking for the cutting edge design from the trend group, or a retail environment wanting the soothing calm of wood, Penta delivers stylish flooring solutions that are engineered to perform year after year.” T +32 5665 3211 www.ivcgroup.com

Next month: Wool Week Gallery 2010

The new survey found that 53 per-cent of under floor heating suppliers reported growth in excess of 10 per-cent in the last quarter of 2009, with 75 per-cent of companies in the sector having ‘excellent’ or ‘exceptional’ credit rating.

David Goose from Ambient Electrical, the leading providers of electric under floor heating, said, “Most suppliers have found that it is essential to shift their focus to maintain sales, and many under floor heating specialists are placing an increased focus on the issue of energy efficiency and the benefits of using under floor heating compared to traditional methods of heating. “As the rentals market becomes increasingly buoyant, under floor heating suppliers are finding that many landlords are investing in under floor heating systems as a way of making their properties stand out from the crowd, and as a result, many savvy businesses are tapping into this new target audience. “In the past, estate agents advised property investors to splash out on bathrooms or kitchens, but today the focus is on cutting edge technology and under floor heating.” Radiators have been the heating method of choice for many years, but under floor heating is certainly gaining in popularity, with more prospective buyers placing such systems on their ‘wish list’.

Mr Goose added, "The market will certainly remain strong for the rest of 2010 as more and more homebuilders, landlords and investors realise the selling power associated with under floor heating systems- now is a great time for those within our industry.” www.ambient-elec.co.uk

The biggest celebration in wool history

Wool Week is ‘biggest celebration of wool in history’ says Ian Hartley, CEO of the British Wool Marketing Board (see page 51 for details). “Every day this event is gathering momentum and we are seeing some really creative retailing put behind planned activities,” he adds. Holiday grin and tonic Tenerife provided the perfect tonic for former carpet and furniture sales employees this summer – thanks to holiday grants from the Furnishing Industry Trust (FIT, formerly the FTBA).

Former furniture salesman and general manager Charles A’Court enjoyed a 10-night cruise to the popular holiday island with wife Elsie thanks to a grant of nearly £2,000 towards the cost of the trip. Also, retired carpet salesman John Easton, 65, was able to enjoy a seven night stay at the island’s Playa De Las Americas resort with wife Valerie thanks to the help of a £1,000 grant towards the cost of their holiday. “The Canaries are clearly the place to go this summer!” said FIT chief executive Charles Kerrigan. “Both Charles and John worked in the furnishings industry for many years before retiring and have had health issues in recent years. They both needed a break away from it all and FIT has been pleased to help them on their way.” John retired through ill health in 2004 and last year underwent major spinal surgery. He said: “It seems a long time since Val and I went on a holiday and it was lovely for us to get away and relax after the ups and downs of the previous year.” T 01367 240000

Life cycle by Cormar Cormar Carpets has raised £1,000 for The Christie cancer centre with a charity bike ride when six employees from the company took on the challenge of the 60-mile bike ride to raise funds for the Manchester-based centre which treats over 40,000 patients a year. They completed the Manchester to Blackpool route in four and a half hours. Money raised by the Cormar team will go towards The Christie’s ongoing research, treatment and additional patient services. This includes plans for a new treatment centre to diagnose people more quickly and improve treatment services.

Sponsors of the team included Lancashire DAF, PPS Commercials,Transline and System Hygiene who provided support and equipment.

“We take part in numerous fundraising events each year and with a focus on staff wellbeing,The Christie bike ride was the perfect way to combine our love for fundraising and fitness. A number of employees cycle to and from work and jumped at the chance to take part,” said Craig Marshall, logistics manager at Cormar Carpets.

Yes you canyon! David Worthy is a well known manufacturers agent in the North East of England where he has been employed to represent several high profile companies over the last 25 years. Before becoming an agent David worked as a representative for Gilt Edge Carpets and as a regional sales manager with Crossley Carpets. However in January 2010 life changed for David as he was diagnosed after a very short illness with a cancerous bowel tumour, which would certainly have proven to be life threatening had it not been removed by immediate major and extensive surgery. This was successfully carried out during early February. After long and extensive care David has recovered remarkably well. Apart from his regular series of scans and tests a great deal of David’s recovery especially his mental state with regard to the future has been attributed to Macmillan Nurses and his local Marie Curie Care Centre.

As a way of showing his gratitude and as a way of “putting something back” David has enrolled on a most worthwhile venture in spring of 2011. In aid of his local Marie Curie Care Centre he is endeavouring to trek for what will be in excess of 40 miles through The Grand Canyon U.S.A. He is hoping to raise in excess of £3000 by this venture. David is appealing to any carpet colleagues or companies who would gladly contribute towards his ambitious trek by donating towards what is hoped you will agree is a ‘Worthy’ cause!
