Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
THE STOCKLISTS May 2014
Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.
Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter
• shedding • pulled loops
Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

A walk in the Parkland
An eminently versatile collection great for use throughout the home, Parkland is the latest twist pile carpet to come from Crown Floors.
In 10 colours that reflect Crown Floors’ reputation as a close follower of interior fashion, James Caldwell of Crown Floors says Parkland is a “carpet of the people”. “Homes just want a carpet that performs well and looks great. For the majority of people this means a carpet that is easy to look after and that will last and here Parkland ticks all the boxes,” says James. “In 10 shades that are confirmed on-trend for this season, including the grey of Silver Ring, and with a ‘salt and pepper’ fleck, Parkland is a carpet that really appeals to the masses, a true carpet of the people.” Suitable for busy family homes thanks to its heavy domestic rating and with the bleach clean benefits of 100% Easy Clean fibre, Parkland’s four-metre width is versatile and will minimise wastage and seams in all bar the skinniest or widest of rooms. Plush underfoot and with Crown Floors’ four-star rating, Parkland is available on a dedicated lectern. Designed to achieve the fine balance between maximising shop space and allowing the carpet range to shine, the lectern gives space to large feeler swatches of all colours, with a header board showing striking lifestyle images and key selling points. Without underneath storage needed for additional samples the unit has a compact footprint and is a great way to introduce Crown Floors into floor spaces where room is a premium. T 0800 0773301
UK push by Vorwerk
Vorwerk Carpets acquisition of rival German manufacturer Norddeutsche Teppichfabrik will boost the company’s UK presence with new, cost-effective product lines. Taking over the Nordpfeil carpet brand as part of the agreement with the receiver, Vorwerk Carpets will continue production uninterrupted and will begin to drive the brand within the UK residential carpet sector under the watchful gaze of well-regarded new appointment Howard Lindsay, formerly of Mohawk. Ian Hammond, UK sales director for Vorwerk Carpets reveals more: “Well established and highly regarded in Germany, the Nordpfeil brand is the perfect acquisition for us as it presents a new perspective for our UK residential sales, sitting perfectly alongside existing high-end Vorwerk carpets. Nordpfeil will allow us to deliver a more cost-effective product line without detracting from the Vorwerk name that is now synonymous with the premium end of the sector. Existing and new retailers will be able to benefit from the Nordpfeil brand, which will retain the hallmarks of German carpet engineering, and thanks to a competitive pricing strategy it will also give us the potential to also explore wholesale options.” The appointment of the highly experienced figure of Howard Lindsay to the team will further help to strengthen Vorwerk within the UK residential sector. With a long and successful track record of growing brands within the sector, Howard Lindsay will bring his excellent knowledge and wellestablished network of retail contacts to both brands, growing penetration across the UK and building on the excellent reputation of the Vorwerk brand. “We are delighted to welcome Howard on board,” continues Ian Hammond. “His understanding of the retail carpet sector is second-to-none and we are relishing the opportunity to make new inroads into the UK market under his experienced guide.” T 020 7096 5090

Comfort and co-ordination
Riding on the success of the well-known Stainsafe Noble Saxony, Balta Broadloom has added a new package of eight natural shades and four coordinating stripe colourways in More Noble & Stripes, the latest carpet to bring a coordinated look to the home.
Enjoying all the benefits of 100% StainSafe polypropylene, this brand new collection features the extra resilience of a two-ply yarn. With a luxurious pile length, More Noble & Stripes brings sumptuous levels of comfort in a carpet that is easy to care for on a daily basis. Importantly, the 33.5cm pattern repeat of the stripe design is ideal for use on stairs. Stripe designs are exclusively available in a four-metre width, while plain colours are also available in a five-metre width. “Stripes are incredibly popular as homeowners look to inject colour and pattern into the home,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “That said, many want to use a stripe pattern in areas such as stairs or hallways, as an accent to neutral carpets used elsewhere in the home. Not wanting to ‘risk’ making a mistake in their new investment, customers take comfort from collections that mean they can achieve this look in a risk-free perfectly coordinated way.” The added advantage of such collections is that all-round performance is maintained too and with More Noble & Stripes this means a bleach cleanable StainSafe carpet for the entire home, with stain removal guaranteed for 15-years. Backed by a 10-year wear warranty for peace of mind in the busy family homes that benefit most from easy clean carpet, More Noble & Stripes joins Balta Broadloom’s growing collection of coordinated plain and stripe ranges. Rugs rough it up
As the rough luxe look takes hold, one of interior’s biggest trends of the moment is hard to capture in flooring, but thankfully with rugs from Louis de Poortere, retailers can now make the most of the worn and aged effect made fashionable by the movement. With the new Vintage and Cameo collections, it is possible to explore a range of worn looks, from faded shades through to designs that appear weathered by the ravages of time, Louis de Poortere captures the essence of rough luxe bringing it to a new audience of shoppers on the high street, rather than leaving it in the realm of high end interior design:

“The rough luxe look was pioneered by architect Rabih Hage as an interior design movement that exposes and celebrates the changes a building endures over time, rather than attempting to cover them up,” explains Alan Russell, Louis de Poortere. “Previously the domain of privileged commercial and residential design, the movement is now filtering through to a wider audience and Louis de Poortere is among the first wave of interior companies to bring the trend to the mainstream public consciousness.” The Louis de Poortere rug collection is highly accessible for all budgets and comes with the quality reassurance of European manufacture using an inviting wool and cotton chenille mix for a luxurious underfoot feel and appearance retention. After a fashion
Polyflor has completed the installation of a diverse range of its flooring products in the new state-of-the-art 40,000 sq ft headquarters of fashion house SRG Apparel, in Whitefield, Manchester.
Over 750m2 Polyflor products were specified by Jenkins Design of Bury, and installed by Bramhall Flooring, including Expona Control, Expona Design, 2000PUR, Polysafe Arena and Modena PUR. Senior Interior Designer Louise Grimes from Jenkins Design, said: “My clients brief was to provide staff with an energetic working environment which would encourage creative thinking. We decided to specify Polyflor products as they offer fantastic on-trend design, whilst at the same time providing the necessary durability and safety.” SRG Apparel designs, creates and supplies to UK market leading retailers such as River Island, Next, Tesco, Asda and New Look to name but a few, assuring the head quarters will be exposed to a heavy footfall on a daily basis. Within the entrance hall a contrast of Expona Control in Warm Grey Concrete and Polysafe Arena PUR in Brushed Titanium was chosen, creating zonal areas throughout the first floor. Developed for use in commercial areas which receive a high level of traffic, Expona Control is the first flooring product to marry the design benefits of traditional LVT with safety flooring. Expona Design in Aged Indian Apple, pictured below, was selected for the feature showroom due to its strong directional contrasts and eye catching level of detail which complemented the overall design of this highlight space. Into the woods
Zollanvari has announced the opening of their refurbished showroom and warehouse in Hamburg, Germany, in the heart of the Brooktorkai district.
An area that has long been recognised as a major European centre for the carpet trade, Brooktorkai has been subject to major redevelopment in recent years, making it a vibrant and architecturally outstanding quarter in Germany’s second largest city after Berlin. Zollanvari Teppichhandel GmbH’s space has been designed to create a contemporary environment to showcase their exquisite collections of South Persian weaving art. The 800m2 space over two floors boasts wooden floors in keeping with the original wooden columns and beams of the warehouse, and an advanced lighting system to highlight the richness of the colours and textures of the carpets on show. Zollanvari Teppichhandel GmbH will house the traditional Qashqai’ carpets from southern Iran including the following lines: Amaleh, Beloutch Sumakh, Kashkuli, Shekarlou, Bulurbaft, Mafrash and Luribaft. These established Zollanvari lines will be on display alongside Kelims (flat-weaves) from their Baneh, Maryam and Zagros collections. Contemporary and innovative, yet rooted firmly in the Persian weaving tradition, these flat-weaves have been highly regarded and successfully retailed in interior design markets globally. New lines presented for the first time in Hamburg will include ‘Into the Woods’ – first shown at Domotex Hannover this year and shortlisted for the prestigious 2014 Carpet Design Awards in the category of Best Traditional Collection. Spot the difference
Offering an independent care warranty, such as that from WOW, retailers can improve service levels, boost customer satisfaction and improve customer loyalty there are few other incentives that encourage these key sales objectives, says the the WOW Warranty campaign.
“Any successful retailer will tell you that being able to provide your customers with third-party reassurance at the point of purchase can really make a difference and so we’ve introduced this free spot removal service and personalised carpet care advice programme to prove to homeowners that their investment in a new carpet is a safe and risk-free one, giving them the reassurance they crave,” says Steve Bakker, one of the committed pioneers of the WOW Warranty. Independent flooring retailers are the first point of call for higher spending consumers, as they look towards better customer service, more knowledge from staff and a higher quality product. These higher spenders are also those more likely to stay loyal to the retailer, revisiting the store for future purchases. “With the internet and price shopping there will always be competition selling the same product at a similar or an even cheaper price,” continues Steve. “Never before has there been more of a need to differentiate yourself than now. Great service, even after the sale is made, lasts much longer in the memory than the price. “When you recommend a restaurant to friends, it is rarely because it was cheap. You rave about the quality of the food and the attentive service. This runs true for your customers too. If they aren’t talking about how good your service is then you are missing a very important revenue stream – referrals – and this is where WOW can help enhance your reputation.” Supported by leading carpet manufacturers including Manx Carpets, Gaskell Wool Rich, Mr Tomkinson, Kingsmead and Crucial Trading, details on WOW warranty can be found at www.wowwarranty.com T 01943 850 817 www.woolsafe.org 36 May 2014

Flooring shows ‘late recovery’ signs
Victoria PLC has announced that the Group's profits before tax and exceptional items are likely to be ahead of market expectations for the full year to 29 March 2014.
The positive news follows the integration of Globesign group since the acquisition December 13, 2013, which is progressing on target to produce the benefits outlined when it announced the deal in November when Victoria said: “The enlarged group will benefit from a strengthened senior management team, with a clear and focused strategy for further turnaround and growth.” City analysts Schroders have cited the flooring sector as a beneficiary of a ‘later-stage recovery’ in the UK as the markets move on from some of the initial recovery stocks. Citing the potential of the Headlam Group to gain from an upturn in the housing market, he said there were still good opportunities in the sector. The High Street has had a good Spring with a number of encouraging signs that demand is finally picking up says the BDO High Street Sales Tracker which reported the strongest March for four years with sales up 3.2% overall. Homewares - which cover interiors and flooring - had mixed fortunes as department stores were sluggish but BDP said interiors retailers were strong with more than 2% growth. In the chart below, we’ve mapped ‘Homewares’ against the general UK trends for in-store retail (i.e. excluding internet retail).
“We’ve been delighted with the uptake we’ve had to both Foundation and Master Installer courses at the start of this year,” comments Darren Robinson, training learning and development manager for the Academy. “It goes to show that installers across the country are recognising the benefits of being associated with the Quick-Step brand, as well as the valuable extra work which being listed as one of the country’s best installers at www.quick-step.co.uk brings.”

CFR out of print
The publishers of the Carpet & Floorcovering Review have confirmed the end of their involvement with the once flagship magazine title in the trade.
The Gearing Media Group purchased the magazine in 2007 after CMP Information (now United Business Media) stopped publication and while the title had a brief revival in print it has been only available online in recent months and the website version appeared to have stop being updated in October last year. CFR had slumped in the ratings of a recent survey of retail trade readership among nine trade titles (The Stocklists was placed first in those results.) The rights to the title have been bought by The Flooring Show Ltd, organisers of the annual Harrogate event, whose Paul Stott confirmed that the company had no plans to print CFR but would maintain the website for the forseeable future.

As wood, laminate and LVT installers look for a competitive edge for 2014, the Quick-Step Academy for Excellence in Flooring has reported an excellent uptake in courses over the beginning of the year.
With record numbers signing up to become a Master Installer and Foundation level courses filling fast, the Academy is busier than ever and with lower prices for 2014, places for future courses are already being taken by industry professionals wanting to gain an advantage.
Quick on the uptake
Attending the LVT Master Installer scheme is a prerequisite for any retailer wanting to become a LIVYN stockist, but the Wood and Laminate Master Installer qualification is still optional for those stocking engineered wood and laminate under the Quick-Step brand. However, with numerous advantages including a manufacturer-backed two-year installation warranty, technical support and the potential to be TrustMark accredited both retailers and installers will benefit greatly from wearing the badge. “Existing Master Installers have been delighted with the extra work that the badge brings, with many reporting a big uptake in work since being listed on the Quick-Step website as consumers look for the very best professionals to install their new Quick-Step floor,” continues Darren Robinson. The Quick-Step Academy for Excellence in Flooring now also offers the Wood Sanding & Finishing course that covers a multitude of sanding and finishing techniques for different species of wood. This course provides a valuable additional revenue stream for existing Master Installers. All courses can be booked online at the Quick-Step Academy website. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Cushion floor clicks
Keeping consumers up-to-date with the latest developments to its cushion flooring collections, Avenue has updated its website, www.avenuefloors.co.uk, to include details on the new Ultimate Timber collection as well as access to the 2014 brochure.
The website was launched last year to provide consumers with an easy-to-use portal to discover the Avenue cushion flooring collection, as well as find their nearest Avenue retailer with the postcode search facility. Since then, it has been widely used by consumers and is proving its worth as a tool that delivers foot traffic to Avenue retailers. “We’ve found the website has become a great resource for homeowners right across the UK,” says Francis Debrabandere, commercial director for brand owner The IVC Group. “It encourages homeowners to make the trip to their nearest Avenue retailer with a clear idea of the floor they are interested in. Working in tandem with our consumer PR campaign, the new website is driving footfall to stores across the UK.” As a result of feedback from retailers and consumers, usability has been improved too, with swatches now enlarging on click as it felt this was an intuitive action for experienced and inexperienced internet users. The new site, including all 2014 updates to the Avenue collection is now live. T 0800 032 3970 www.avenuefloors.co.uk
Resources for the circular economy is the theme for Carpet Recycling UK’s sixth Annual Conference which opens in Birmingham on June 24th with a thought-provoking programme reporting on new developments and innovations across all sectors of the carpet waste supply chain.
A networking dinner on June 23rd will precede the one-day event at the city’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, sponsored for the third year running by Invista, manufacturers of Antron Carpet Fibres. For the first time, CRUK’s annual conference will feature an awards ceremony recognising members in four categories - both individuals and organisations - who have made important contributions to the sector. These are Innovation in Recycling; Take Back Partner of the Year; Re-Use Member of the Year and Recycling Champion. “So much work has been undertaken in the last few years to advance carpet recycling and re-use,” comments CRUK Director Laurance Bird. “Having exceeded our 25% landfill diversion target two years early, the time has come to celebrate the achievements of those who are leading the way in this field.” CRUK has been shortlisted for a Zero Waste Platinum Award in recognition of its sustainable achievements in developing and progressing carpet reuse and recycling activities. Winners will be announced in May. The nomination follows its Gold Zero Waste Award last year in the Partnership category of the Zero Waste Awards 2013. Popular parallel ‘breakout’ sessions will focus on technological developments, recycling and collection schemes together with presentations covering a host of manufacturing and sustainability issues within the waste hierarchy. Primetime news for F. Ball
A range of F. Ball and Co. Ltd.'s high performance floor levelling compounds and smoothing underlayments have been used to create a top quality, professional floor finish at the new ITV News Studios, at Assembly Square, in Cardiff Bay. Stopgap 600 Base and Stopgap 300 HD were used by AMG Flooring Ltd to prepare the 125m2 area, before Styccobond F54 was used to adhere DLW linoleum, providing an aesthetically pleasing and durable finish, suitable to house ITV Cymru Wales news, programmes and production facilities. The existing site, which needed to be completely refurbished to make the necessary space available for television production, had raised-access panel flooring. These raised panels were removed by AMG Flooring Ltd. in order to give more height to accommodate cameras in the new studios. The existing subfloor beneath the panels was found to be in poor condition, however, a moisture measurement test found that the surface did not require a damp proof membrane. Contractors pump-applied 50mm of Stopgap 600 Base to level the existing subfloor, preparing the area to receive a smoothing underlayment. Stopgap 600 is ideal for raising floor levels quickly and economically, and sets in as little as three hours. Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty smoothing underlayment was then used to prepare the area to receive the linoleum floorcovering. Stopgap 300 HD is a water mix underlayment, which offers excellent self-levelling properties and is designed for use in light to heavy-duty areas. Finally, Styccobond F54 was used to adhere the DLW linoleum to the subfloor. A non-flammable, synthetic rubber emulsion adhesive, Styccobond F54 provides a high initial grab and is protected against biodegradation. Tony Gibbs, of AMG Flooring Ltd., said: “I frequently use F. Ball products, because they're so reliable. When it comes to a tried and tested adhesive like F54, I know exactly what I'm going to get. I've also got a good relationship with our F. Ball regional representative and manager, and it's great to know that they're on our side if we ever need their advice or support.” T 01538 361 633

Carpet Recycling UK Carpet Recycling UK will again be promoting its sustainable services at the BGNFS to show how retailers can help their businesses and the environment by recycling their carpet waste responsibly. Visitors can learn more about how an expansion in clean installation waste take-back schemes and the rising numbers of outlets processing carpet waste for new uses offer many advantages for retailers. For CRUK members Designer Contracts and Oxbridge Flooring, increasing amounts of carpet offcuts are being collected through reverse logistics, segregated and kept dry on site before being sent for recycling. Material is baled before collection and eventually reprocessed into new underlay products.
Mayne Technology Mayne will be showing the latest release of their “Cloud” based Mosaic Point of Sale System specifically designed for carpet and flooring retailers. The Cloud Mosaic is now available on a monthly contract. New facilities in Mosaic include a postcode look-up facility and a POS Module for Retailers They will also be showing the latest Measure Square estimating software for iPads. In CRUK’s third appearance at Cranmore Park, the award-winning industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet will be highlighting responsible disposal alternatives for post-consumer and clean installation carpet waste. Having beaten its original landfill diversion target (25% by 2015) two years early with a 27% rate in 2013, CRUK is keen to attract even more retailers for whom take-back schemes offer a number of advantages. “Retailers who take positive steps towards sustainable disposal of waste carpet, such as participation in take-back schemes for clean installation off-cuts, can benefit from enhanced customer perceptions and reduced waste collections,” says CRUK Director Laurance Bird. “Not only are they enhancing their green credentials in helping to divert carpet and underlay waste from landfill, but they differentiate their business from competitors. This is an added selling point with increasingly eco-conscious consumers,” he said. T 0161 440 8325

Flower on Flooring No vinyl horizon for LVT With sales of luxury vinyl flooring increasing, manufacturers are further developing their ranges of non-wood designs The ability to replicate natural materials, such as stone, as well as including unique colours, patterns and textures, are attributed as the reasons for the rising popularity of LVT, especially for those looking for something other than wood effect. Karndean Designflooring retail sales director Scott Cochrane, says last year saw homeowners increasingly adopting luxury vinyl flooring for its versatility, practicality and endless design capabilities. In addition to random panel and parquet designs, such as herringbone, shaker style and block designs, texture is also becoming increasingly popular for homeowners. “Quick to respond to interior trends, we have this month unveiled our newly updated Art Select Stones and Woods collection showcasing our most delicate and realistic embosses to date, each handcrafted to reflect the unique patterns and textures,” he says.
The company’s new designs include Art Select Travertine – Washburn, Caldera and Gallatin – the contrasting hues of Art Select Slate – Melbourne, Canberra, Oakeley and Corris – and understated and classic Art Select Marble – Otono and Fiore – and Art Select Limestone – Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Herm. The company has also updated other ranges, Avenue Floors Classic says Mr Cochrane: Limestone Toucan “Inspired by traditional ‘parquetry’, our already successful Art Select Wood collection also welcomes three new parquet colours, taking this sophisticated range to seven impressive designs.” Avenue Floors product manager Victoria Hemelaer says manufacturers do not always pay sufficient attention to creating alternatives to wood-look cushion flooring: “Here at Avenue Flooring we take a different approach. Cushion flooring is an ideal choice for all areas of the home and so making sure it’s available in a range of decors is important.
Handcrafted Art Select from Karndean
Including four slate, three marble, three travertine and four limestone designs, each new option has been created from its original inspiration stone recovered from various locations throughout the world, such as the steps of a former government building in Melbourne, Yellowstone National Park, USA and a quarry in the Italian province of Impressive Sundown Oak from Karndean Massa, Tuscany.
“…last year saw homeowners increasingly adopting luxury vinyl flooring for its versatility.” 56 May 2014
“With Ultimate Minerals, Bubblegum & Liquorice, Ultimate Design, Classic Limestone and Titanium XT, the majority of Avenue collections concentrate firmly on creating interesting alternatives to wood. This makes the collection great for retailers that want to show the diversity and design potential of cushion flooring, whether slate, pebbles or even bright pink dots and multicoloured stripes.”
Offering alternatives to wood effects is a big part of the company’s strategy, says Ms Hemelaer, because designs that stand out from the crowd add interest, especially for the more adventurous, and have excellent sales potential as well.

and surface textures meet the demands of heavy commercial applications. Environmental credentials include achieving a BRE A+ rating and containing on average 40% recycled content with 100% recyclability via the Recofloor recycling scheme.
Forbo head of residential sales Jason Pethard comments: “With natural materials playing a major part in interior trends, in addition to wood effects, stone and slate designs still prove popular with consumers. New printing technologies now allow for larger scale tiles and pattern repeats, which help to open up areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, and work well in modern day open plan living spaces to create a seamless backdrop to larger areas while providing a neutral background to the modern colour pops of soft furnishings and appliances.” Also proving popular are the modern takes on “wood”, such as Seagrass, which provide a much softer tonal option for modern interiors. “For living spaces where textile floor coverings would traditionally be used, we have introduced textile effect vinyls, which provide subtle texture and warmth but with the ease of cleaning and maintenance of a resilient floor covering,” says Mr Pethard. Polyflor states that its Expona luxury vinyl tile brand has become synonymous with high design and quality, marking the company’s continual evolutionary development of design-led flooring products. Form and design are at the heart of the inspiration for Expona, the company states, and the design options within the combined range of 83 colours are further enhanced with the availability of a collection of creative inlay accessories to emphasise or accentuate the natural floor design.

Moduleo’s David Bigland says bespoke vinyl flooring provides a valuable alternative to real stone flooring, as it is less expensive, warm to the touch and reduces noise. The company has recently launched 16 new additions, responding to consumer trends.
“One of the hero products in the new range is Azuriet stone, which is set to prove particularly popular for kitchen and bathroom specialists. This has metallic hues suspended within the stone to make the floor sparkle and create a unique wow factor. Like other stones in the Transform range, the product features a PU coating which ensures it is easy to clean and well protected from scuffs and stains, therefore ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.” By investing in innovative manufacturing techniques, Moduleo is at the forefront of this industry whilst also offering an environmentally-friendly option for consumers, says Mr Bigland. Austalex Flooring is the UK distributor of products such as the Windmöller Wineo range of vinyl flooring, which offers a variety of benefits such as an integrated acoustics system to minimise walking and impact noise. The designs also include an abrasionresistant PU surface treatment to provide hard-wearing, low-maintenance flooring installations for all rooms in the house, including wet rooms. Ranges include Connect Laguna and Bacana, which offer alternative options to ceramic floor tiles. These can be easily laid without adhesive, the company states, and can be walked on immediately after being installed. All Wineo designs have the DIBT building regulations approval, the CE mark and meet the quality guidelines of the TFI-TÜV ProfiCert and the A+ Certificate, says Austalex. May 2014 57
Brintons airport arrivals Brintons Carpets has announces the successful completion of two projects with the installation of bespoke carpet at the new airport terminals of Mumbai and Bangalore.
Designer Contracts’ carpet recycling scheme has been named as a finalist in the Housebuilder Product of the Year Awards in the category ‘Best Site Product.’
The scheme works by diverting 90% of Designer Contracts fitter’s waste carpet into felt underlay. What isn’t turned into underlay is used in the equestrian sector for arena flooring – already saving 100 tonnes from landfill since its launch in autumn 2013. Said MD, Peter Kelsey: “We’re delighted to have been recognised for our recycling scheme and we have been pitted against some tough competition. We have a sustainable and manageable product, which is showing strong results and is of benefit to the housebuilder in more ways than one.” The winner will be announced at the Housebuilder Product Awards at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham on the July 2 2014. Designer Contracts is the UK’s largest flooring contractor. As well as floorcoverings, the company has a curtain and blind making service, offers furniture and lighting packs and also has a show home design division. www.designercontracts.com
Ulster Carpets elects...
The two contracts, worth over £1.2m, both feature designs based on local themes. The design for the iconic Mumbai International Terminal 2 draws inspiration from India’s national bird, the Peacock. The Bangalore design is based on traditional Indian Rangoli patterns. The two installations cover 36,000 square meters. These installations will withstand a combined footfall of over 50 million passengers per year. The two projects mark further success for Brintons in Asia Pacific having previously carpeted prestigious locations including the Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore and the Crown Casino, Melbourne, Australia. Brintons’ India based sales team are now focused on securing additional contracts and converting opportunities currently in its pipeline. The success of these two projects are representative of Brintons’ broader international success. As a Royal Warrant Holder in recognition of supplying carpets to Britain’s Royal residences and having a rich history dating back to 1783, Brintons’ British brand is one of its key strengths in international markets, particularly in China and North America. To support its growing international footprint, Brintons opened a new sales office in Dubai last September. Airport infrastructure, including design, is becoming increasingly important for countries looking to attract foreign tourists and business. Brintons has completed a number of other airport installations including Sydney Airport, Australia, Changi Airport, Singapore and Pudong Airport, China. Commenting on the announcement, Brintons CEO, Duccio Baldi, said: “A large proportion of Brintons’ business is conducted in international markets, where our heritage and reputation for quality stand out. Today’s announcement is also another example of Brintons’ ability to produce carpets that blend design and durability, which is why we have enjoyed such success with airports and similarly demanding projects to date. We will continue concentrating on winning additional contracts in international markets by providing both the very best in quality and design.” T 01562 635665 www.brintons.net
