FLOORINGNEWS Rolling out 2024 recycling awards Waste vinyl collection and recycling scheme Recofloor has announced that its 2024 annual awards are now open for entry. Funded by Altro and Polyflor, the Recofloor awards showcase the leading role played by scheme members in improving waste vinyl disposal practices. The parent company, Quin Global, has pioneered research and development to avoid the use of dichloromethane (DCM) - a proven carcinogenic – along with CFCs and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) wherever possible. “As zero waste targets spread through supply chains, winning a Recofloor award is a great way for flooring firms to boost their profile and highlight green credentials to prospective customers,” says Recofloor Manager, Carla Eslava. “It’s also a fantastic motivator, giving a boost to hardworking teams.” Previous winners range from local fitters to regional distributors and national contractors. “Large or small, every Recofloor member is contributing to making the flooring industry more sustainable,” adds Carla, “and we’re keen to celebrate and share their successes.” For 2024, the awards include six open categories: Contractor of the Year, Distributor of the Year, Drop-Off Site User of the Year, Project of the Year, Recofloor Champion, and Best Newcomer. Alpha Vinyl goes Direct With two stores in the North East, Doors & Floors Direct is an independent retailer rooted in bricks and mortar flooring sales to homeowners across the area. Established in 2010 and now with stores in Benton, Newcastle-UponTyne and in Tyne and Wear, the retailer has a wide customer base across the area, offering the best in customer service with a local family feel. FLOORINGNEWS Recofloor hits the road Recofloor hosted several pop-up visits and trade events at flooring distributors during 2023, which provided an excellent opportunity to introduce how the waste vinyl flooring collection scheme works and how it can help the flooring sector solve their disposal needs and challenges. From May to September, Recofloor Scheme Manager, Carla Eslava visited distributor trade counters located from Manchester to Cardiff where she gave an overview of Altro and Polyflor’s take-back scheme to the trade counter staff and foot traffic. In the first face-to-face visits since the start of the pandemic, Recofloor’s proactive approach was welcomed, particularly by trade counter staff who benefited from the latest news. New contractors were more interested in the longer and more educational morning trade events learning about the scheme. Recofloor promotional materials, flyers, chocolates and pens, plus Altro and Polyflor goodies were delivered at the event. Recofloor branded window decals, specifically designed for distributors that indicates the site is a designated Recofloor drop-off point, were also supplied. “Many contractors were interested to hear that Recofloor can accept LVT offcuts and loose lay vinyl and were keen to increase their collections that include this material. It was helpful to remind them of what we can collect,” comments Carla. “Through engaging with customers, we can spread awareness of the scheme and the convenience of free waste vinyl flooring disposal and how their participation could contribute to winning more business. As so many Recofloor members can attest, ‘it’s a win-win all round’ for the environment and business cost savings.” In addition to the visits and the morning trade events, the scheme undertook additional calls to distributors who also received flyers along with a short Recofloor video clip for those with a promotional monitor at their trade counters. Accolade for ops manager Make An Entrance's 31-year-old Operations Manager Anna Parkinson of Lincoln is one of the winners of a prestigious UK-wide competition which celebrates the talents of 60 outstanding young people working in the furniture and furnishing industry. Launched as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry, Anna was named in the ‘60 for 60’ campaign which recognises 60 of the most accomplished and promising young people across the UK working in the furniture and furnishing industry. From product designers, cabinetmakers and technical developers to logistics professionals, commercial managers and operations directors, the awards showcase a diverse range of career opportunities within the sector. Starting as customer service and marketing personnel five years ago, Anna now manages the intricate operations of Make An Entrance and has done so amid the business’s evolution from an online sales and marketing company to a thriving and expanding UK manufacturer. Anna commented: “I am deeply honoured and immensely grateful to be named a '60 for 60' winner. "Mud floors" or market recovery? Victoria boss Geoff Wilding offers optimism that the depressed flooring market will recover eventually "unless people wish to return to walking on mud floors!" The unusual forecast came in the sign off to a set of disappointing half year results which saw sales at the leading flooring conglomerate fall by 4% and a prediction that more challenges were to come. But the Victoria executive chairman signed off his report with a "things can only get better" conclusion. "The long-term sector fundamentals remain strong as, whilst consumer spending on flooring may be subdued during difficult macro-economic conditions, unless people wish to return to walking on mud floors, demand always recovers." "The current lower demand is a result of purchase decisions deferred, not purchases forgone: carpet continues to age, stains don't magically disappear with the passing of time, ceramic tiles continue to chip or crack, style and fashion move on. Therefore, as consumer confidence and discretionary spending rebounds Victoria will, of course, benefit from significant pent-up demand - just as it always has done in the past," he said. "We cannot predict precisely when the rebound will occur although we are (clearly) continually closer to that point. Nevertheless, we view the second half of FY2024 with caution, with increased geopolitical uncertainty and continuing high mortgage rates impacting consumer confidence and discretionary spending. Things can only get better - hopefully! Retailers report slow sales in 2023, but hope for a happier new year Flooring retailers reported some glad tidings in the run up to Christmas but 2023 overall has performed poorly, according to The Stocklists annual end-of-year survey. 2024 will be better, they reckon! Canvassing retailers in the first week of December, 61% of our readers said Q4 trading was OK with nearly 10% saying it was better than average. Only 29% confirmed anecdotal reports of sluggish trading in the all-important pre-Christmas trading period. But reviewing the year as a whole, retailers were less encouraging. After a poor summer and early Autumn, 56% said sales were down compared to last year – 19% saying their figures were down by more than 10% and 9% saying sales had plunged more than a fifth.

Looking across all three years since the start of the pandemic however, a small majority of readers (56%) said their business was up overall. And the flooring industry is relatively optimistic about 2024 with 41% expected an improvement, 37% predicting a similar performance to this year and only 23% expecting things to get worse. Most respondents were not expecting much of a recovery any time soon but predicting that stronger sales would come through in the second half of 2024.

Analysing what has been going on within the trade in 2023 in a little more detail, the vast majority (77%) of retailers say they increased prices during the year, but not by much – of those only 23% had increase prices by more than 10%.

And two-thirds said margins had not improved with 96% saying customers had become more price sensitive. However, 76% of our readers said sales of higher value, quality flooring had held up well. When we asked retailers what had been their biggest challenges of 2023, finding fitters – usually a major issue – had dropped down the list to just 11%, maybe a sign of reduced volumes. 36% citing low customer demand and the top problem was rising supplier prices, singled out by 42% of respondents. 30

But suppliers actually got a ringing endorsement from retailers with 56% saying their price increases were reasonable (37% felt there had been some profiteering!) and when we asked if suppliers had risen to the challenges of 2023 in terms of reasonable levels of service/delivery, 74% agreed that they had.

Finally we asked for opinions on what would help boost business in 2024 and one Southern retailer just said one word “stability”! Business rates were mentioned by many readers as a continuing challenge but it was interest rates that were singled out by most as the big issue. “We need a reduction in energy costs and lower interest rates to get the housing market moving. Too much of customers money is being taken up by extra costs in their household bills,” said one reader. Ltd.’s Stopgap 600 deep section base compound and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive were amongst the company’s products used to deliver a suitably resilient flooring installation as part of the creation of a new state-of-the-art education facility for the next generation of healthcare professionals in Worcester.

COREtec develops UK strength COREtec, the pioneers of 100% waterproof click flooring created their product and an entirely new flooring category in the United States over 10 years ago, registered the US patent in 2015 and are now quickly developing a loyal and forwardthinking customer base in the UK.

Floorcoverings were installed over both floors of the newly reconstructed building, including in its 1,000m2 ground-floor atrium, overlooking gallery and upstairs meeting rooms and teaching areas. Work began by diamond grinding the original concrete screeds to create a perfectly smooth surface. A moisture test also indicated that subfloor relative humidity levels on the ground-floor were too high to install floorcoverings without a moisture management solution in place and risking floor failure, despite the presence of a structural dampproof course. F. Ball’s Stopgap F78 waterproof surface membrane was therefore applied to suppress residual construction moisture. When using Stopgap F78, you don’t need to prime the surface prior to the application of other subfloor preparation products, so flooring contractors could proceed straight to applying F. Ball’s Stopgap Red Bag smoothing compound to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of new floorcoverings once the waterproof surface membrane had cured. The water-mix, self-smoothing underlayment is suitable for preparing absorbent subfloors in biologically sensitive areas, such as hospitals and designed for areas subject to foot and light wheeled traffic, the likes of which would be expected in the healthcare training centre. After mechanically preparing the particularly rough screed on the upper floor, areas needed raising by more than the maximum application thickness of a smoothing compound. Contractors therefore applied Stopgap 600 deep section compound in these areas. The product is suitable for applications at thicknesses between 5-50mm prior to being capped with a suitable F. Ball smoothing compound. Beforehand, they primed the subfloor with Stopgap P141, which is specially formulated to promote adhesion between Stopgap smoothing compounds and non-absorbent subfloors. Flooring contractors then installed Karndean wood-effect, loose-lay vinyl planks on the ground floor and first floor gallery. Tarkett Granit ‘Safe. T’ and Gerflor Tarasafe Ultra vinyl safety flooring were installed in the upstairs anatomy lab and toilets respectively using F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive. Eco imperatives are embedded in the flooring industry There was a time when environmental friendliness was a “nice to have” and the flooring sector added various initiatives to their portfolios to burnish their credentials. The project contributes to fair wages for fishermen, clean coastlines and reduced CO2. Every year the plastic soup grows with 10 million tons of plastic dumped in our oceans. Representing the equivalent of more than one truckload every minute. If no action is taken to slow down the current rate of plastic pollution in the ocean, it is to be expected that the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight by 2050. After the ocean-bound plastic waste is collected and granulated locally into new building blocks it is shipped to the Netherlands. The final step is the inhouse extrusion of yarns and the production of floorcovering at the Condor Group production site in Hasselt and Genemuiden, the Netherlands. Resulting in a bright collection of modern designed carpets, automotive textiles or artificial grass that are the next step of textile innovation. Betap continues its steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility and has made substantial strides in sustainability over the past 12 months. A core initiative is the NextGen collection which reflects their vision to a greener future and this has been expanded with two concept ranges ECoZY and Zen. Louis De Poortere – Take Care

When it developed the mono-material 100% polyester construction of its new Ecorugs collection with the intent of achieving product circularity, Louis De Poortere had two significant challenges to meet. The first to ensure it maintained the aesthetic qualities of its designs and secondly, to make sure that Ecorugs could be recycled back into new rugs. The Belgian manufacturer’s experience in working with polyester meant the first challenge was relatively easy to solve. Yet to meet the second proved more complex and has seen Louis De Poortere create its own path to reuse and recycle through the launch of its own recycling program. The Take Care Program is based on two principles – a long life through the rug’s machine-washable construction and a returns process which is simple for the customer and ensures that Louis de Poortere is in control of reuse and recycling. Once the original purchaser has finished with their Ecorug, they simply scan the QR code which comes on every rug’s label to arrange free collection and return.

It is estimated that this would cost over £8,200 to dispose of through commercially available channels.

Invisible danger Unmanaged excess subfloor moisture is the leading cause of floor failure and frequently results in delays to projects, major inconvenience and expense when remedial work is required. Tim Green, training manager at the UK’s leading manufacturer of subfloor preparation products and adhesives for floorcoverings, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., tells us why and how to manage subfloor moisture before installing LVTs. Unchecked subfloor moisture, whether residual construction moisture or rising damp, can attack flooring adhesives and floorcoverings, causing resilient floorcoverings, such as vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs), to blister and lift. Not only can this ruin the finished appearance of a flooring installation, but it can result in complete floor failure and present a health hazard. F. Ball’s technical service department frequently receives enquiries from contractors who have been called to rectify a flooring installation where floorcoverings have begun to lift as a result of unmanaged excess subfloor moisture, and our regional technical representatives often attend site visits where this is the case. Given customers’ high expectations for LVT installations, it is important to take time to determine subfloor moisture levels and, where necessary, deploy an appropriate moisture management solution prior to installing them.

Testing In addition to ensuring a subfloor is suitably sound, smooth and free of any contaminants, including any old adhesive residues, it is essential to check for subfloor moisture to determine if the subfloor is dry enough to receive a floorcovering by undertaking a moisture test. The only way of measuring subfloor relative humidity levels with accuracy, and the method advocated by British Standards, is using a calibrated digital hygrometer. Normally, a liquid waterproof surface membrane will be required to suppress excess subfloor moisture and prevent damage to flooring when Relative Humidity (RH) levels are above 75% and resilient floorcoverings will be installed.

Solutions F. Ball has two timesaving options for when a moisture management solution is required. Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane is a twopart, epoxy resin system, which is applied in a single coat. It fully cures in as little as three hours and will isolate residual construction moisture or rising damp where relative humidity values are up to 98%. For an even quicker way to create a barrier against residual construction moisture where RH values are up to 95%, there is Stopgap F78, a one-component system, which is applied in two coats, requiring 15–20 minutes curing time for the first and a further 30 minutes for the second.

Next steps After checking for subfloor moisture and deploying a moisture management solution where necessary, contractors can proceed with preparing the subfloor for the installation of new floorcoverings. This will usually include the application of a smoothing compound to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of the floorcoverings, remembering to prime beforehand if necessary. Finally, contractors can proceed to install floorcoverings using an appropriate adhesive once the smoothing compound has cured. Pressure sensitive adhesives are ideal for the installation of LVTs because they form an instant grab upon contact, so, once positioned, tiles or planks won’t move about as contractors work, a particular benefit when creating complex designs or patterns. The compatibility of particular floorcoverings and adhesives should be checked to further ensure against floor failure. To do this, contractors can consult F. Ball’s Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), which lists adhesives recommended for use with over 6,000 floorcoverings produced by over 200 manufacturers. A continuously updated version of the RAG is available as a free app and on the F. Ball website. It is also available as an A5 printed booklet, free copies of which can be requested from F. Ball.

Q 2023 has been a tough year for sales across the sector. Will 2024 be better or worse for the retail trade overall?

A R espected financial institutions predict that 2024 will be a year of

stabilisation and stagnation. Inflation and interest rates are forecast to remain challenging, while a general election will add further uncertainty. In such an environment, it's vitally important that we continue to offer customers exceptional value with the highest levels of innovation, product and service quality.

QW hat will be the most significant consumer/design trend over the next five years that will drive growth?

A I n challenging times, consumer sentiment tends towards nostalgia and

timeless design. Customers will be looking for products that bring a sense of comfort with nature inspired design and understated luxury. High quality products designed to be long lasting without the need for time consuming maintenance will be increasingly in demand. I don’t see our love for classic herringbone patterns waning any time soon so our designers are very focused on developing beautiful floors with versatile laying patterns.

QW hat’s the biggest business frustration holding back the trade at the moment?

A A lack of trained installers. Our Karndean Training Academy was

established to offer both new and experienced installers top quality training so they can expand their skills. As an industry we can do more to encourage school leavers to join us by continuing to invest in training.

Q A re there too many suppliers/manufacturers for the size of the LVT market now?

A L VT is arguably one of the fastest growing categories in the flooring

sector and for many years has been expanding its market share over textiles, timber and stone. Competition is driving innovation, resulting in an ever wider choice of products with attractive flexibility, format and maintenance benefits. This can only be a good thing.

Q What do manufacturers need to do better? A I n a competitive market, it’s key that suppliers stay in touch with local and national trends and regularly communicate with our retailers. By understanding the dynamic market conditions, we can evolve our products and services to meet specific retailer needs and consumer expectations.

QW hat do you regard as Karndean’s greatest success in the last

BUSINESSNEWS Consumers cut back spending says Headlam Leading flooring distributor Headlam has reported a decline in UK sales as consumers cut back on interiors spending, though November has rallied after a slow Autumn, it says. In a trading update to shareholders the plc said: "After a relatively robust summer trading period, the market in September and October was weaker than expected, reflecting the impact of the cost-of-living crisis as consumers cut back spending on home improvements. "However, the Group’s November trading was improved, with a step up in average daily sales compared to October, albeit volumes and revenue remained below the previous year and typical seasonal uplifts," it said. According to the trading update in respect of the eleven months of the year to 30 November 2023, Headlam expects full year results to be “broadly in line with expectations." “In the UK the revenue for the Period is slightly positive year-on-year, offset by revenue decline in Continental Europe, resulting in Group revenue being flat year-on-year for the first eleven months. In the UK, the Group saw a 5% volume decline year on year, although this is in line with the overall market according to data for the 12 months to October 2023," says the company's statement. “Despite the general market backdrop, revenue from larger customers and trade counters has remained strong, with year-to-date growth of 27% and 9% respectively; November itself was a record month for revenue from larger customers," it said. Headlam has already reported that the volume of sales in the UK market are around 20% lower than in 2019 on a rolling 12-month basis. But it comments: "Whilst there is uncertainty over the short-term outlook for the market, we remain optimistic about the medium-term prospects for both the market and our opportunities to grow market share." * RMI = repair, maintenance and improvement

Likewise bucks trend with record sales Ambitious flooring group Likewise has reported a record revenue month for November, bucking the industry trend of sluggish Q4 sales. The fast growing distributor told shareholders that November sales were up 13.3% to £14m and the group's revenue for the eleven months to the end of November is up 13.3% year-on-year. Within this result, the emerging Likewise Floors branded business increased 29%, reflecting excellent organic growth against what the company described as "challenging market conditions which are undoubtedly, adversely impacted by macro-economic head winds." Likewise said the growth has been predominantly driven by increased volume rather than price inflation. The Group is expected to achieve current market expectations when the financial year wraps up at the end of this month with analysts forecasting annual turnover of over £136m compared to £123.6 in 2022 and £47m back in 2020. In Chief Executive Tony Brewer's trading update report he concluded: "Likewise has undoubtedly increased market share during 2023 and with capacity in the logistics network developed over the last three years can look forward to further growth in 2024 towards the Group’s medium term ambition of exceeding £200 million Annual Sales Revenue."

Carpet imports reverse decline After four long months of significant decline, carpet imports into the UK have finally picked up with Turkey leading the charge. According to HM Revenue & Customs data compiled by The Furnishing Report, volumes of carpet were up 21% year-on-year at 15.5 million sqm in October. In value terms, £83.2 million of carpets arrived in the U.K, from overseas in the month, up 3.8% year-on-year. Carpet imports into the UK have been steadily falling since the summer with goods from Belgium especially badly hit and a poor performance from The Netherlands. ` European imports still remain depressed but Turkey posted a 47% increase in the value of goods shipped to the UK in October, reaching £15.9 million.

"Dramatic recovery" in consumer confidence In a suprising boost to business as Q4 draws to an end, consumer sentiment towards buying big ticket items like flooring has rallied strongly according to retail analysts. The latest report from GfK's highly regarded Major Purchase Index which asks how confident consumers are to buy appliances, furniture, and cars shows a 10 point rise to minus 24 - the biggest jump in over three and a half years. Last month, after a summer of improvements in the index, the index dropped 14 points to minus 34 – the largest drop for over three years in a single month. Joe Staton, client strategy director at GfK, described the improvement as a "daramatic recovery" and added: “The trend clearly points to an improving consumer mood, although the underlying numbers are still all negative. People are still hesitant. Although they know that officially inflation has reduced, the cost of living crisis is very real for many and it will be some time before that feeling changes," he said.

Furnishers pessimistic about prospects Furniture manufacturers are pessimitic about sluggish trade in the sector with a depressed oulook for the next six months. The Trade & Price Trends Survey is run twice-yearly by the British Furniture Manufacturers Association (BFM) who said the latest results from over 4,000 members suggested that "optimism about the trading environment is fading." The report said: "A negative balance of -21% reported that they were more pessimistic than in April this year and -32% said that trade was worse than 12 months ago. Negative results were also reported for order intake and the volume of output."The was however some encouragement that raw material prices were falling although labour and overhead cost pressures were still at a comparatively high level.

ADHESIVES SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time:

Subfloor:

The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.

What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard.

Odour:

While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces.

Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.

The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation.

Special Performance:

ADHESIVE TYPES Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors. Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels. Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive. Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments.

Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Static

Sprouting

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS January 2024

Flattening

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Shading

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

Pile Reversal

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Pulling Loops

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS January 2024

Shedding

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Indentations

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

The original carpet tile

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Samples

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Installation

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.

Benefits

• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs

• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing

techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.

• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.

Product options

• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.

• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the

sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.

• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on

a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.

Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared

to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.

• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.

Installation

Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT.

Other notable options include:

• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been

embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.

LVT construction

Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)

PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 51


Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

PU (polyurethane) foam • This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber • A more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

Laminate underlay • There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination • A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlay • Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Pre-tackified underlay • A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired. Underlayment for LVT • This provides a smooth surface on which you can glue down immediately. If there is a time or acoustic issue or a problematic underfloor, a stable, smooth dual underlay system will provide the best solution.

Crumb rubber • Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Felt • This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
