THE BIG PICTURE

We’re more than school During school ceremonies this year, I talked about something I learned from my daughter last summer as we headed out on the Appalachian Trail to do some backpacking, something I hadn’t done in more than 30 years. We watched a man riding up the mountain on his bike, straining against an incline of at least 45 degrees, every muscle in his calves striated, every vein in his neck pulsing. She looked over at me and said, “Man, that’s some Type II fun!” Type I is parties and celebrations—the easy stuff, but Type II is the feeling you get after you have gone through something challenging, something you weren’t sure you could do, and successfully come out on the other side.

On that trip, I can assure you we had some of each. I think every school year is a mixture of each as well. We celebrate our wins on the field, but we grit through summer practices; we bask in applause for our theatre performances, but we work late into the night to memorize our lines; we love to do well on tests, but we make sure to have learned from our mistakes along the way.

There is no better place to learn about the relationship between Type I and Type II fun than school, and there is no better place to do that than The Steward School.

We hit many milestones this year, many of which you will read about in these pages.

This year, we gave a diploma to our 1,000th graduate of the school! Our seniors were awarded $4.6 million in merit grants for college; we experienced 95 percent retention in enrollment, a school record; six of our

varsity teams made the state play-offs, meaning they finished their seasons among the top eight in the entire state in our division, and the varsity golf team won its first-ever state championship!

Although our day-to-day academic experience can’t be easily quantified in statistics, it was a remarkable year in the classroom as well. You may have read about this in news articles on our website newsroom, and you’ll see more on these pages. The Bryan Lab, through experimentation, observation, and close study, showed us what can happen in a true laboratory environment. The Lower School, through personalization, interaction, real-world design, and research, helped each child to build academic and social fundamentals. The Middle School employed empathy, team work, play, and further research to help kids explore and understand their self-identities and those of others. In the Upper School, faculty helped our young men

and women use new technologies, prototype and design techniques and theories, and research to spur intellectual growth. These skills are not limited to one division—each division represents a thread in an upward spiral of learning, one that will certainly not close with their graduation from Steward.

Leadership opportunities, mentoring, reallife experiences, arts, and athletics: Steward is more than school. What makes us more than school? I would argue that it is our relationships—those we have built and those we maintain. In this community, we inspire, learn from, and support one another so that we can continue our positive growth. Steward is more than school; Steward is a family.

Classroom Happenings At The Steward School, engaging academic projects are fueling students’ minds, stirring their imaginations, and unleashing the possibilities around every corner. This past February, we debuted Classroom Happenings, a weekly digital series that spotlights stand-out examples of our multi-disciplinary curriculum. Below are excerpts from several exciting stories. The full articles can be found on Steward’s website newsroom.

Math Goes Digital First graders in Lisa Moore’s class have moved beyond worksheets to learn mathematics— these tech-savvy students have developed their own digital math journals. With the help of the digital applications Explain Everything and Book Creator, Mrs. Moore guided students to create interactive booklets on their iPads in which they can write math problems, draw number lines, arrange in order photos showing quantities of goods, and more.

Planting Seeds of Change The Partnership for Research and Education in Plants (PREP) at Virginia Tech provided students with the resources to carry out a hands-on project in Kristen Householder, Eric Latourelle, and Kat Celata’s Life Science classes. PREP sent the class seeds—both regular and mutated—from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The mutated seeds have a particular gene that has been disabled, and students are growing the mutants alongside unaltered “wild-type” plants under experimental conditions of their own design. The goal is to understand the purpose of the mutated gene.

A Scientific View of Hiroshima What would you do first if your city was attacked with a new form of warfare and you survived? Upper School science teacher Leslie Kovach’s AP and Honors Chemistry students were confronted with this decision as part of their study of Pulitzer Prize-winner John Hersey’s Hiroshima, which tells the stories of six survivors of the atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city in 1945.

Imagining in Different Languages Cierra Gillard’s seventh graders and Jen Blanco’s kindergarten, first, and second graders carried out conversations in Spanish in which they chose characters and discussed the characters’ interests, physical characteristics, and more. Then, Lower School students drew pictures for the book and seventh graders drafted text using Google Docs.

Minimester musings Every year, Upper School students spend a week in February taking a break from typical classroom activities to do something more hands-on in the community.

While ninth graders participate in community service and/or visit colleges or universities and seniors work on their Senior Projects, sophomores and juniors complete internships at an organization of their choosing. Read about the fantastic internship experiences of three Steward students during Minimester:

But my internship showed me that business can be really fun and the people you meet are really interesting.”

Claire Xu n Grade: Junior n Internship Site: WTVR CBS 6 News (Richmond, Va.) n Responsibilities: “I spent time with producers working in the studio and going on location with different newscasters. I saw every aspect of television production from the on-air talent to marketing to finances.”

Zac Abushmaies n Grade: Sophomore n Internship Site: Lake Anna Veterinary Hospital (Mineral, Va.) n Responsibilities: “I helped mostly with administering vaccines and handling the animals during their appointments. I also got to sit in on a surgery at one point, which was really cool. My mom works there and we have a lot of animals at home, so it was really fun getting to work with her.” n Favorite Moments: “There was a huge St. Bernard named Emma who had bone cancer and she was being given medicine through an IV to relieve her pain. I got to sit with her for two hours, just petting her and making her feel relaxed so she wouldn’t get up and walk away while the IV was still in.” n Intended College Major: “I want to do something in the field of engineering, but I would love to create devices that specifically help animals.”

shadow my cousin, Mark Rockett—he is a business consultant who serves as a liaison between HQ and the owners/operators of different Chick-fil-A franchises. I learned about the funds and supplies needed to make improvements to the restaurants and keep things running efficiently.” n Favorite Moments: “The first day of my internship, we went to a VIP party that Chick-fil-A hosted for Atlanta media outlets and all the franchise owners in the area. I got to meet all of them, as well

n Favorite Moments: “Before Super Tuesday on March 1, I went out with a reporter to interview the heads of the Democratic and Republican parties of Virginia to get information about what people needed to know in order to vote. I also got to accompany Meteorologist Nikki-Dee Ray as she surprised a fan at his retirement party.” n Intended College Major: “I’m interested in marketing and advertising, but I love the human aspect of it. It was helpful doing this internship because the advertising department talked to me about the research that goes into targeting the right demographics and making sure the newscasts are balanced.”

Getting the ball rolling This year, five Steward seniors signed letters of intent to play in collegiate athletic programs when they begin college in the fall. Learn more about them here (and go to page 3 to see a photo):

A special commitment Senior Meg Trepp is certainly leaving a lasting impact on Steward’s campus and in the Richmond community—the incoming Elon University freshman founded Steward’s Special Olympics club as well as Virginia’s first Unified Youth Bowling program in partnership with Special Olympics.

Meg first developed a passion for Special Olympics in eighth grade when she heard Special Olympics athlete and global messenger Frank Stephens speak at a University of Richmond basketball game, where he advocated to stop the use of the word “retard” in reference to those with mental or physical disabilities. In fall 2012, Meg coordinated with Mr. Stephens to have him speak on Steward’s campus, which served as the catalyst for starting the school’s own Special Olympics club.

Meg built the club over her time in Upper School and established a Middle School club as well. This school year, the Upper School’s club boasted 78 members, making it the largest student organization on campus. Each month, the students volunteer with Special Olympics events in the community such as basketball and volleyball tournaments. Only one other independent school in Richmond has a club devoted specifically to Special Olympics.

Meg’s involvement with the organization didn’t end at Steward. In July 2015, Rick Jeffrey, president of Special Olympics Virginia, invited Meg and Upper School teacher Elizabeth Simpson to attend the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, as well as the 10-day GenUin Social Impact Summit by Generation Unified. Meg and Ms. Simpson used the summit to develop ideas to bring a Unified program to the Richmond community, leading to the creation of the Unified Youth Bowling program after receiving a $2,500 grant from Special Olympics International.

For eight weeks this past spring, 50 individuals (25 with and 25 without intellectual disabilities, including 13 Steward students) between ages 8 and 22 from across Richmond bowled together for two hours every Saturday morning. “The purpose is to make Richmond a more inclusive space because there are so few opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to participate in programs with typically developing peers,” Meg said.

To secure funding to continue the program after Meg leaves for Elon, she hosted a Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser in February that was open to all of Richmond—almost every volunteer and about half of the families in attendance were from Steward. The event raised $6,000 for the Unified program, which will cover the cost of the program for the next two years.

“What I love about bowling is that, with the help of bumpers and the assist ramps, it puts everyone on a level playing field in terms of abilities,” Meg said. “Unified has been my favorite thing I’ve done with Special Olympics because the participants build such a connection and friendship during the time they spend together.”

Meg said she hopes to start a Unified program in association with Special Olympics on Elon’s campus when she starts in the fall.

Steward shows off Our Steward students certainly know how to command a stage! A fantastic display of creativity awaited audiences at the Talent Nights this spring. During Lower School Talent Night, fourthgraders Kaiya Ashe, Anna Ernst, and Stella McDonald served as emcees for a show that included numerous dance routines, pianists, song performances, and more. Junior Tucker Diveley, sophomore Zac Abushmaies, and ninth-grader Liam Harr hosted Middle and Upper School Talent Night, which was full of stunning musical entertainment, stand-up comedy routines, instrumentalists, and more.

We’ve Got Magic to Do In April, Steward’s spring musical, Pippin, told the story of a young prince’s quest to figure out what he should do with his life, “which is the ultimate goal of education,” said Pippin director and Lower and Upper School Theatre Teacher Craig Smith. In the show, a group of actors lead Pippin to try various paths in life until he discovers one that fulfills his idea of happiness.

In the Nick of Time In February, Steward brought to life All in the Timing, a collection of six one-act plays by David Ives. Directed

by Middle School Theatre and Upper School Public Speaking Teacher Susan Sanford, the plays ranged from “Universal Language,” which told the story of a girl who stuttered and invented a completely made-up language called Unamunda, to “Lives of the Saints,” which told the tale of two women in a Chicago church basement preparing for a funeral breakfast. The cast and crew included 19 Middle and Upper School students.

It was an exciting year for Spartan Athletics! Our fall, winter, and spring sports teams all did a fantastic job. We are thrilled to have had eight teams qualify for the VISAA state tournaments. Read more about their exciting seasons below:

Varsity Golf Team wins State Championship This year marked a huge first-time victory for The Steward School—the varsity golf team won the VISAA Division II state championship tournament on May 23!

Coached by Catesby Jones, who was named the Division II Coach of the Year, and led by captain Owen Carter, a senior, the team finished with a collective score of 321, easily ahead of second-place finisher Greenbrier Christian Academy, whose score was 346. All told, the Spartans dominated the eight top-ranked Division II independent school teams in the state.

The Spartans dominated the eight top-ranked Division II independent school teams in the state.

Owen was named Division II State Player of the Year by VISSA and was also the medalist for the tournament, meaning his final score of 69 was the best of all competing players. He has been All-State for the past five years, and this was his best state tournament score.

Six Spartans represented the team during the tournament: freshman Dylan Fox, who received All-State honors with his score of 81; seniors Harrison Vicars, Weston Popp, Andrew Farlow (who was named second team All-State), and Owen; and freshman Charlie Hade.

This is the eighth year that Steward has competed in the state tournament, out of nine total years it has been in existence.

Varsity Boys Soccer The team had its best regular season in many years with an 11-6-3 record, while playing a tough schedule in Division II and advancing to the quarter finals of the VISAA state playoffs. Some of the biggest victories included the Homecoming win over Christchurch in a game where the Spartans dominated from kickoff to the final whistle and a huge 2-1 win over Division II stalwart Hampton Roads Academy in double overtime. The team was led by senior captains Weston Popp, Theron Powell, Tom Stack, and Jackson Wellons, and included players in grades 9-12 under coaches EJ Watkins and Casey Smith.

Varsity Boys and Girls Cross Country The varsity boys team increased in size this year with great athletes joining an experienced core, which served the team well at the state meet. The varsity girls team was the strongest it’s been in many years, placing eighth out of 22 scoring teams at the state meet. Senior Harrison Vicars led the boys team throughout the season, capped off with an 18:35/28th place finish at states in a field of 293 runners. Led by Summer Owens’ ALL-LIS and All-State performances (21:22/18th place), the girls team trained hard and pushed each other to be their best. The teams were coached by Laura Akesson, Kat Celata, and Todd Serr. In addition, senior Ashley McCreary will be participating in collegiate cross country and track at Wofford College.

Varsity Boys Basketball The boys varsity basketball team, coached

by Jamiel Allen ’02, entered the season with six new faces to the program and only two returning starters from last year’s team. Senior Chaise Johnson (20.7 PPG) and junior Marvin Cannon (17.0 PPG) led the Spartans in scoring. Chaise was the team’s Most Outstanding Player, and senior Kam Smith was named MVP. The boys finished the regular season with a 21-5 record, a first place finish in the Trinity Christian School holiday tournament, and key wins against Hampton Roads Academy, Highland School, Hargrave Military Academy, and Trinity Episcopal School. The boys earned a bid to the state tournament for the second time in three years, but lost a hard-fought game against Middleburg Academy. The team graduated five seniors this year, including Coaches Award winner Johnny Beigel. In addition, Chaise signed to play collegiate basketball at HampdenSydney College. (Read more on page 7.)

R E COG N I T I O N AT H L E T I C S Varsity Girls Basketball The girls basketball team was led by senior captains Haley Cummings and Andrea Schwartz, and junior captain Matea Magnano. Playing one of their strongest schedules ever with 10 out of 14 opponents ranked in the state, the Spartans finished 8-12 in the regular season and received their second bid in three years to the VISAA Division II state tournament. Injuries plagued the team, so the Spartans played with junior varsity players for a majority of the season. Fortunately, our varsity players were healed and back on the court for the state tournament as the girls prepared for the no. 5 seed, Virginia Episcopal School. The team put up a valiant effort, but ultimately were defeated 42-36 in the first round. The Spartans were led in scoring by sophomore Carmen Gonzalez-Garcia while Matea and Haley provided offensive firepower.

Varsity Boys and Girls Swimming The team was coached by Eric Hopp and led by five seniors, Baker Dewey, Dan Kovach, Lizzie Fernandez, Ashley McCreary, and Anna Gordon, who mentored the rest of the team with the help of eighth-grader Noah Nichols. Every member of the team dropped time during the season, including a remarkable 30-second drop by sophomore Zac Abushmaies in the 100 breast stroke. The season was highlighted by Noah’s ninth place finish in both the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke at the VISAA state swimming championships, which allowed the Steward boys team to finish 10th out of 16 teams.

Varsity Baseball Coached by Bruce Secrest and Daniel Hicks, the team consisted of several young but skilled players who will be returning next year, including the team’s trio of young pitchers: eighth-grader Harrison Clifton and freshmen Logan Ransom and Carson Jones. The team made it to the semi-finals this year and ended with a 13-12 final record, making it the tenth year in a row that it has made it to the state semi-finals or finals (which no other VISAA team in the state can claim). Out of its 12 losses, six games were lost by one run in the last inning. In addition, the team had three senior players sign with collegiate baseball programs: Kam Smith with University of Northern Illinois, BK Stancil with Averett University, and Theron Powell with Walters State Community College.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse The team started off strong with a ranking of no. 2 in the state for Division II schools. The girls had their first major victory over rival Virginia Episcopal School, edging them out with a final score of 16-13. Perhaps the most notable win for the Spartans was conquering Division I school Bishop Sullivan in an 11-9 home game victory. The girls had a 9-3 record for Division II schools and remained at no. 3 in the state for the rest of the season. Led by captains Mackenzie Carnes, Helen Russell, Matea Magnano, and Taylor Walker, the Spartans finished their regular season with an overall record of 10-8 and earned a home seat advantage for the Division II state tournament.

Stand-out player Emmie Curry and All-LIS team player Caroline Laibstain kept the girls competing with some of the top Division I schools in the state. Christina D’Angelo and Amanda Florio coached the team.

Down Home on the Ranch February’s “Gala on the Ranch” raised just over $70,000 for the school! $3,500 was raised for the Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship through the live auction of a Homestead vacation package and Dolly the puppy, who went to a very good home. Special thanks to the entire Gala Committee and a big yee-haw to Clay Reynolds and Ann Slyh, who have co-chaired the event for the past four years.

B-I-N-G-O! Both young and old had a blast at Family Bingo Night on January 29. While playing the classic game, Steward families enjoyed a pizza dinner and participated in raffles to win fun gift packages.

Keep on Hacking The Bryan Innovation Lab hosted the school’s first Hackathon on March 19, welcoming all Steward students grades 3 and up with an interest in computer programming to put their skills into practice. Armed with nothing but laptops and their own ideas, students chose which programming software they wanted to use and worked for two-and-a-half hours on an original creation, including animation, a game, or even music. The idea spread to the Lower School, which later hosted two rounds of Junior Hackathons.

Commitment to Innovation The Bryan Innovation Lab once again proudly featured nationally recognized experts who are leading thinkers and change-makers in their fields as part of the Visiting Innovators program.

This year, we welcomed experts in the areas of maker education, technology and art, and food innovation.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Coming home It’s been a big year for Class of 2008 alumna Kelsey Mohring Lewia. She was promoted to senior account executive in the healthcare public relations practice at PadillaCRT’s Richmond office. Earlier this year, Kelsey visited Steward as guest speaker at the January JK-12 Admissions Program. Read an excerpt from her comedic, heartfelt speech about what it means to be a Steward below: Let me ask you a question—what do you dream your child will grow up to become?

A scientist? An athlete? A lawyer, doctor, actor, electrician, politician, teacher, or parent? Well, my name is Kelsey and I’m a writer, communicator, volleyball player, chef, leader, and recently, wife. I’m all of these things in great part because of The Steward School … To borrow a few words from last year’s speaker, a 2010 alumna named Grace Henderson, “Steward helped me develop into the purest form of myself.”

The kaleidoscope of experiences available at Steward are too numerous to name them all.

I was able to play basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse. I sang in the chorus, performed in a musical, created art, and participated on the dance team. I learned to speak fluent Spanish thanks to one of my favorite teachers and spent a spring break in Argentina. I wound up getting a minor in Spanish in college and spent a semester abroad in Spain because of my love of the language and culture.

My classes were challenging and demanding as well as hands-on and creative. I was

accepted by all of the colleges I applied to, including UVA. I chose to attend JMU because it felt like the right place for me and, by that time, Steward had helped me develop a solid enough sense of my identity and self confidence that I could make that decision— one of the hardest decisions of my life.

But, success isn’t just about academics, which is probably what stands out to me most about Steward. This school developed me into a whole person. It taught me not just to do great, but to also do good. It taught me how to think, not what to think. It helped me develop a love of learning and taught me to care about those around me. And, when I made mistakes, it taught me to not let those define me. As I quoted before, Steward helps students develop into the purest forms of themselves—whatever wonderful combination of titles that may be.

Through the grapevine Class of 2004 alumnus Austin Hamilton not only knows what to do when life gives you lemons—he also knows what to do with grapes. After the Steward lifer graduated from Randolph Macon College in 2008 with a BA in Sociology, he traveled through Europe, visiting Italy and France on multiple occasions.

By sampling great wines during his travels, Austin’s interest in the wine business piqued, and he decided to shift his career focus upon returning to the U.S. He now serves as vineyard manager at Charlottesville’s First Colony Winery.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

“The hours can be really long, especially during the summer and early fall. During this time, I usually get to work at 5:45 a.m. Then, I’ll usually start with spraying the vines with a mixture of chemicals to prevent disease issues, thinning out the vines to create a more balanced canopy, removing excess vegetative growth, and just guiding our crew in managing the vineyard. By the time I finish up, it’s usually 5:30 p.m., so it’s a lot of 12-hour days during the growing season.”

Describe your certifications that reinforce your knowledge of this industry.

“I have certificates in Enology and Viticulture from Piedmont Virginia Community College and I’m a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW).

I wanted to learn as much as I could starting out, and luckily I had the time and the resources to take classes. The world of wine in Virginia is actually pretty small, so I was able to use my knowledge to start teaching one of the state’s main viticulture classes that you need to get certified right here at First Colony.

I went from being a student of wine to now being a teacher.”

What is your favorite aspect of your job?

“At first, it was being able to try all the different types of wine and learning how each bottle represents a different region of wine.

Now that I’m so into the business side, it’s really gratifying to grow grapes in a largescale, agricultural format and turn them into a luxury consumer good. Growing the vines

How did your time at The Steward School prepare you for where you are today?

“Steward did an outstanding job of preparing me for college and then life after college, specifically in my ability to effectively communicate, both in writing and orally. In my position, I’m constantly interacting with customers and I’m always in written contact with people, so those skills are incredibly important.”

Do you have any advice for current Steward students or recent graduates?

“Don’t pigeonhole yourself into pursuing only one career path. I find that 90 percent of the people I graduated with are not in a career related to their major, so you really need to have an open mind about taking a lot of different avenues for your career. Also, be sure to choose something you love. I did that with wine, and it really worked out.”

Exceeding expectations It’s been an incredible year! It’s inspiring to witness the power of the Steward community and what can be accomplished when we come together as one family to achieve our goals.

Founded in 1972, The Steward School has a rich history of providing students with a challenging yet nurturing educational experience. This tradition continues today as a result of the strong partnership between our parents and faculty, the steadfast focus on our mission, and the generous giving and tireless efforts of our parents, faculty, staff, trustees, students, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends.

Year after year, members of our community support the school with donations of time, talent, and treasure. Not only do these gifts have a tremendous impact on our classrooms and programs but they represent an investment in our children.

Steward students consistently excel in academics, impress us with their talents on the field and on the stage, and serve as active members of their community. This high standard is maintained, in part, because of the overwhelming generosity of our community.

We are extremely proud to report that we have raised more than $1 million for The Steward School as a result of total giving during 2015-16. By offering an amazing selection of silent and live auction items, this year’s Gala on the Ranch raised $124,000 for the school. Food, fun, and fall frivolity at The Great Tailgate resulted in $11,000. Our golf fans came together for the Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic and raised $54,000, while our ever-dedicated Spartan Club raised $9,000 through annual memberships. These are just a few examples of the incredible generosity of our community.

Finally, an impressive $431,000 came from 783 gifts to the 2015-16 Annual Fund. We can not thank our Steward family enough for your help and commitment in continuing to make Steward an amazing place. As you read the Annual Report of Giving, you will see many examples of stewardship and a passionate giving community. We look forward to another wonderful year ahead!

Collaborating to eliminate hunger On Saturday, April 2, more than 160 volunteers participated in Steward’s fifth annual Stop Hunger Now event, for which they gathered together in the Multipurpose Gym to package meals, listen to lively music, and help support those in need. They met their goal of packaging more than 20,088 meals, doubling last year’s amount. Stop Hunger Now’s meal packaging events are a fun, hands-on way to make a difference and impact the lives of those suffering from hunger.
