I Am a Spartan. LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS Grades 2-5
Welcome to Lower School!
Now that you're a bit older, being a Spartan means more than just being a good friend. It means understanding that what you do and say has an impact on our whole community. Here are the things we do to show we are Spartans.
Spartans Prioritize
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
SPARTANS PRIORITIZE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT What it looks like: I take responsibility for my learning. I finish my homework and school projects on time and do my best work on them. When I get a grade on a test or an assignment, I don't just look at the number. I read the comments to understand how I can get better next time. I am developing stamina in my work. I can focus on a task for a longer time, even if it's challenging.
I don't care about my grades or put in a real effort. I rush through my work just to get it done. I don't ask for help because I'm afraid of what others will think.

What gets in the way:
Spartans Show
CARE AND RESPECT
SPARTANS SHOW CARE AND RESPECT What it looks like: I show empathy by trying to understand how another person is feeling. I stand up for my friends or others who are being treated unfairly. I respect our school and shared spaces, keeping them clean and taking care of materials.
I tease or make fun of others. I am unkind to people on a team or in a group because they are not my best friends. I leave a mess for someone else to clean up.
SPARTANS SHOW CARE AND RESPECT
What gets in the way:
Spartans Engage in
CIVIL DISCOURSE
SPARTANS ENGAGE IN CIVIL DISCOURSE What it looks like: I listen carefully to people with different ideas from mine. I can disagree with someone's idea without being disrespectful to them as a person. I can explain my own opinion clearly and calmly, using "I think" or "I believe."
I interrupt others while they are talking. I get angry or yell when someone doesn't agree with me. I use my voice to hurt others instead of sharing my thoughts.

What gets in the way:
Spartans’
INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS Enrich our Community
SPARTANS’ INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS ENRICH OUR COMMUNITY What it looks like: I am confident in my unique talents and abilities. I am inclusive and welcome new friends and different people into my groups and games. I can celebrate my achievements without boasting.
I brag about my successes and make others feel small. I leave people out or make a club or group only for certain people. I get jealous when others succeed.

What gets in the way:
Spartans
INNOVATE
SPARTANS INNOVATE What it looks like: I am a problem solver! When a task or a challenge comes up, I don't give up. I try to find a creative way to solve it. I love to experiment and discover new things. I embrace challenges and see them as a chance to learn, grow, seek the support of others, and be resilient.
I refuse to work with others, don't try to find a new way to do something, or say, "This is too hard!” I am afraid to make a mistake. I want the answer immediately instead of working for it.
SPARTANS INNOVATE
What gets in the way:
Spartans
INSPIRE OTHERS
SPARTANS INSPIRE OTHERS What it looks like: I am a positive role model for younger students. I am a leader by my actions and words, in the classroom, on the field, and in the hallways. I can express my appreciation to others for the ways they inspire me.
I don't listen to or respect my teachers and coaches. I make fun of the school or our activities. I am a negative influence on my friends or younger students.
