Dear Steward Community,
Flip to the cover of this magazine – do you see it? The camaraderie, the energy, the effort … it’s representative of the best of Steward. Not every Spartan is an athlete (nor would we expect them to be), but every one of us can identify with this feeling. We are grateful to be a part of this school “team”: learning from, being inspired by, and being cared for by one another.
As a team, we all contribute to what makes Steward … Steward. The gifts of time and talent that are recognized on these pages make a marked difference in our community. Because of these contributions, our faculty and students have greater opportunities for teaching and learning. We can fulfill the goals of our strategic plan and live into our values.
As Spartans, we give to support what we value, acknowledging that tuition alone does not cover the cost of a Steward education, nor can the school thrive without volunteers. Below are some examples (organized by our core values):
Academic achievement: Gifts support professional development for faculty to learn new methodologies and concepts, as well as the purchase of learning tools from smartboards to books.
Care and respect: Parent volunteers through the Parents Association, Spartan Club, ArtLink, Spirit Committee, Costume Committee, and more exemplify love in action.
Civil discourse: Through Spartans’ generous support, the school has invested in Crucial Conversations training for faculty and staff, which will soon be utilized in the classroom.
Individuality: Financial support enables the small class sizes that facilitate differentiated instruction, as well as funding wellness and community-building resources in the Center for Engagement.
Innovation: The Bryan Innovation Lab, our flagship facility with hands-on learning spaces, was made possible by generous donations from Steward families years ago. Today, community support continues to fund innovation opportunities within the Lab and across campus, including Visiting Innovators.
Inspiration: The Steward community was filled with “Wonder” when bestselling author R.J. Palacio visited campus, thanks to a generous grant. We are fortunate to be inspired by illustrious guests every school year.
Through the generosity of the Spartan community, we are able to fulfill our mission to prepare our students for college and for life in a community defined by robust academics, inspiration, engagement, and care. We are able to Inspire the Future. Thank you for your support.

Dear Spartans,
At any successful non-profit organization, the Development Office is the engine that drives fundraising for the school, with donors and volunteers as the key ingredients to make the magic happen. At Steward, this village is critical for supporting our community. As you turn the pages of this Annual Report, you’ll see that it takes many, many participants to produce a Steward experience for our students.
Last year was a terrific fundraising success!
For example, thanks to the tremendous efforts of Steward’s Alumni Association volunteers and the generous support of our Spartan community, we are proud to announce that the Alumni Legacy Scholarship is now fully funded and will be awarded next year. This milestone creates yet another meaningful avenue of support for our students and their families. This achievement is just one example of many, and it demonstrates how our community continues to come together to support and nurture our students — providing them with the tools they need to achieve academic success while empowering them to be their authentic selves both in and outside of the classroom.
We are grateful to all our donors, corporations, and volunteers who made our efforts possible, and our students will reap the benefits. This magazine is filled with evidence of that effort.

Steward’s Fiscal Management
The school is financially stable due to balanced budgeting, strong enrollment, a generous philanthropic community, and growing endowment and reserves. Endowment growth and adequate reserves are important to supporting the school’s mission.
scholarships and programs. Programs supported by the endowment include the Robins Foundation Grant for tutoring, Variable Tuition, merit scholarships, and health and wellness programming.

With almost 90% of our budget derived from net tuition and fees, we must manage our expenditures within these constraints. Our financial plan provides for the school to operate within our annual tuition income while utilizing funds from auxiliary programs, charitable donations, and endowment and interest earnings to provide for program enhancements and innovative programming. Our Variable Tuition budget is also partially supported by these additional funds.
Our endowment has grown to over $28 million (as of June 30, 2025) through contributions and market appreciation. The endowment consists of unrestricted and restricted funds. The unrestricted portion of the endowment supports the annual operating budget of the school. Each year, approximately 4% of the budget is from the endowment. The restricted portion of the endowment supports student
Steward has a growing scholarship program, which supports our students and supplements the school’s budget. We have several endowed scholarships that pay for all or a portion of a student's tuition to attend Steward, such as the Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship and the Melanie G. Rodriguez Scholarship. We also have endowed scholarships that were established by donors to support our students upon graduation with college tuition and expenses. These scholarships help make it possible for some of our students to attend Steward, and they also support the school budget. Several families continue to make annual donations to the scholarships that they established, ensuring the long-term impact on our students’ lives.
As noted elsewhere in the Annual Report, we are excited that the Alumni Association completed its campaign to raise $100,000 to establish the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. These funds will be invested

so that the earnings can support new students whose parents or grandparents are Steward alumni. The success of this effort demonstrates alumni support for the school and its long-term future. Within the last year, we also had an anonymous donor make a $200,000 gift to support Variable Tuition.
Since 2010, the school’s endowment has been managed by Spider Management, which is the endowment management company of the University of Richmond. Spider Management is the first university-owned investment firm that offers its services to unaffiliated organizations. Through a unique Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) model, Spider Management strives to share the resources, access, and stability of a large endowment investment office with other non-profit organizations. Our endowment significantly benefits from being actively managed in this manner in a portfolio worth $6.3 billion. The target annual return on the portfolio is 8%. For the year ending June 30, 2025, our actual net return was slightly over 10%.
In addition to our endowment, we have established reserves to help cover large expenditures such as repaving the Upper School parking lot and drainage on the baseball field. Having reserves available prevents unexpected impacts to the operating budget, which consists of our faculty and staff salaries and benefits, and academic, athletic, and arts programs. On an annual basis, the school allocates an amount to reserves to support these types of projects. As of June 30, 2025, these reserves were approximately $3.4 million. The funds are invested to generate a 4-5% return annually.
Another source of funds that supports the annual budget is auxiliary income. The Spartan Shop, summer camps, facilities rentals, and after-school programs generate funds that support academic and co-curricular programs. Our summer camps have been growing and have become well-established and popular in our area. Some of our camps fill on the first day of registration each year! We had over 1,100 campers this summer, grossing $1 million in income.
The school’s approach to maximizing charitable contributions, endowment and interest income, and auxiliary income enables us to enhance the programs that we offer students while controlling tuition increases, especially in the current inflationary environment. Additionally, building reserves for plant maintenance and operating needs allows the school to handle the unexpected without adversely impacting the annual budget. Our financial goals are to maintain a budget that supports the mission of the school and provide every opportunity that we can to our students, faculty, and staff.

Annual Fund Giving Games
The annual Giving Games campaign is Steward’s “sparticipation” challenge — an opportunity for donors to help Steward flourish by contributing to the Annual Fund. In 2025, the Giving Games theme was “Magic.” The campaign featured magic tricks highlighting how the Annual Fund supports Steward. Giving Games was extremely successful, raising over $117,000 to support the Annual Fund’s family of funds: athletics, technology, arts, tuition assistance, areas of greatest need, and professional development. Donors to Giving Games are reflected on pages 9-13.

Trucks and Shucks, the annual fundraiser to benefit The Steward School Alumni Association, features a night of live music, food and drink, and fun for all. The 2024 event raised over $32,000 and supported continued fundraising for the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. The Parents Association (PA) provides opportunities for families to engage at all levels within the Steward community. The PA sponsors large-scale social events and fundraisers, coordinates faculty and staff appreciation, presents parent education opportunities, makes significant financial contributions to the school, and relies on volunteers who want to participate in the Steward community.
SUPPORTING STEWARD
Last year, gifts from the PA funded a variety of items to enhance the school experience: new furniture for Waddell Terrace, sound baffling for the BlackBox Theatre, a choral bandshell for performances, a large-format printer, pottery wheels, and a donation to the Annual Fund.
SHOP AND SHARE
We’ve got spirit, yes we do! Our Shop and Share program worked with over 20 local businesses to provide opportunities for community building and fundraising. These organizations collectively gave more than $7,500 to the Parents Association.
FACULTY AND STAFF APPRECIATION
The Faculty and Staff Appreciation (FSA) Committee collected nearly $8,000 from parents in 2024-25, allowing them to organize several amazing feats of appreciation. The fall kickoff was a farmers market, where faculty and staff “shopped” for fresh fruits and veggies, yummy treats, and gorgeous flowers. During Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week in February, daily goodies were distributed, and in May, faculty and staff were treated to a fiesta-themed luncheon. We love our faculty and staff!

Planned gifts, or gifts left to Steward through estate plans, may provide tax reduction opportunities. The Steward School has created an easy way to leave a powerful legacy to future Spartans by partnering with FreeWill, a website through which supporters can write valid wills for free. Those who have made Steward a part of their estate plans are encouraged to alert the Development Office so that they can be formally recognized as members of the Heritage Society, Steward’s planned giving society.
