UCH like how we want to show what we’re having for dinner to our friends on social media, we also do whenever we’re traveling. It’s no longer enough that we tell our friends that we spent the weekend in a secluded island in Palawan or the week-long holiday in Batanes; you have to show proof—“photos or it didn’t happen” they say. WANDERLUST.

Taking photos during your travel is one thing, taking travel photos that will get multiple double taps is another, and taking photos that showcase the beauty of a destination is a different specie altogether. SinoPinas (@sinopinas on Instagram) has successfully done the third aforementioned point. Founded by John Austria, Raniel Hernandez, Alexis Lim, and Karl Ivan Presentacion, SinoPinas is an online community of Filipinos in a quest of discovering local destinations and introducing them on different perspectives, depending on the contributor’s submission. Anyone can submit their travel photos by labeling their images #Si____ (the location) as if introducing the said spot. With more than 73,000 followers as of this writing, SinoPinas is the leading Instagram account that features the Philippines, our local version of @beautifuldestinations if you will. Its co-founders share the basic techniques to make your travel photos IG-worthy.

Rolling instead of folding your clothes saves more space as well as lessen creasing. Tightly roll your clothes and put them in vacuum packs and in packing cubes for the ultimate space-saving technique.

Pack multi-purpose items

Follow the rule of thirds

It wouldn’t be called a rule for nothing, and SinoPinas founders emphasize following this to make your photos look dynamic and aesthetically pleasing. Divide your frame using two vertical and two horizontal lines. Align your subject with the guide lines or at their intersection points. It doesn’t have to be perfectly lined up, though, just make it close. Finally, make creative use of the negative space around your subject.

Find the right light

When you have an interesting subject and have determined a good composition, all you need is to find the right light. Sunrise and sunset, also known as the Golden Hour, are the best light in

Use packing aids

Putting your clothes, shoes, and toiletries in packing cubes helps keep your suitcase organized and finding things easier. To further maximize luggage space, place your clothes in compression or vacuum packs.

Know more about the destination you’re going to beforehand to determine which parts you want to photograph. It also helps in finding out the best time to go to said locations depending on your photography purpose, for instance when there is less people.

Prepare your gadgets

Before embarking on an adventure or a photo walk session, make sure your gear are fully charged. Bring extra batteries and power bank if needed. It also helps if you travel light. Just bring the essentials with you.

Dual to multi-purpose items like a pair of reversible pants, scarves that can be used as an accessory or a blanket or a dress cover-up, and travel pillow that opens into a mini blanket allow you to pack more with less.

Take advantage of editing tools and applications

Thank the heavens for editing tools, we can easily edit our photos—remove distractions, enhance the images, and apply filters—in a few taps. SinoPinas recommends Instagram's editing tools, Snapseed, VSCO, and Touch Retouch. Co-founder John Austria reiterates, “Make sure that every photo you’re taking is well edited before you put it online.”

Never be contented

"When it comes to photography, don’t settle to ‘just okay.’ Take as many shots as you can so you can have a pool of choices,” says Austria. If you want to capture a place sans people, SinoPinas urges you to just wait for a while, if not, use editing apps that can remove unnecessary elements in your photos.
