HK airport in chaos amid more protests
Gilas Pilipinas faces do-or-die game vs. Serbia
HUNDREDS of Hong Kong prodemocracy activists blocked some routes to the city’s airport Sunday as the financial hub began cleaning up after another night of violent protests marked by fires, tear gas and police beatings. Operators of the Airport Express train said it suspended services on Sunday afternoon, while black-clad protesters—hiding from CCTV cameras under umbrellas—built barricades at the airport bus station and attempted to stop traffic on the main road leading to terminals. Outside one terminal at the international hub, protesters set off fire extinguishers, piled luggage trolleys into makeshift road barricades and smashed surveillance cameras. Hong Kong police said they were poised to launch a “dispersal operation,” and in a Facebook post warned protesters to leave the airport area immediately. Flights had so far not been disrupted, but some passengers were left bewildered by the chaotic scenes. Next page

AFTER a drubbing from the world’s 13th-ranked Italy, Gilas Pilipinas faces an even more formidable task when it takes on the world’s fourth-ranked Serbia at 7:30 p.m. today, Monday, at the Foshan International Sports and Cultural Arena in Foshan, China. Gilas must win its next game in Group D of the FIBA World Cup 2019 if it hopes to advance to the next stage. A victory will help them bounce back from their 62-108 setback to Italy on Saturday. “We have a day to find some adjustments, make some improvements. We’ll see on Monday,” Coach Yeng Guiao said. The Serbians are not only capable of advancing past Group D, they are one of the favorites to advance to the finals and to win the crown. Serbia swamped Angola, 105-59, behind Bogdan Bogdanovic. Senate wringer awaits Faeldon Blue Ribbon subpoena out on GCTA furor By Macon Ramos-Araneta
T
HE Senate Blue Ribbon has issued a subpoena to Bureau of Corrections chief Nicanor Faeldon to compel his attendance at hearings that begin Sept. 2 on the early release program that has freed thousands of inmates, including almost 2,000 convicts guilty of murder, rape and drug trafficking. The committee had initially sent a mere invitation to Faeldon but issued a subpoena on news that the BuCor chief planned to send his lawyer in his place. On Sunday, committee chairman Senator Richard Gordon said he would defer the hearing if Faeldon did not show up for the first day of hearings on the Good Conduct Time Allowance used to reduce prison sentences. When Faeldon was still Customs chief, the Senate detained him for repeatedly refusing to attend a Blue Ribbon investigation into massive corruption at the bureau. Faeldon was slapped with contempt after he ignored several subpoenas. In the wake of a scandal that saw billions of pesos worth of shabu smuggled through Customs inspectors, President Rodrigo Duterte sacked Faeldon only to reappoint him as chief of BuCor. Opposition senators urged the President to fire Faeldon. In an interview over radio dzBB, Minority Leader Franklin Drilon noted that Faeldon has been hounded by controversy wherever he goes. During his stint as Customs chief, P6.4 billion worth of shabu from China slipped through the ports as the bribery or “tara” system worsened. Next page
