"Sultan Edriazan Rimbang is believed to be the financier of the entire operation," Remulla said. DepEd eases dress code due to El Niño In a chance interview with members of the press, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the Department is relaxing its dress codes for students as long as what they wear to school is “somewhat dignified”. "Hindi na po kailangan mag-uniform. Informal, puwedeng mag-san-
do na lang or anything, basta medyo dignified nang konti,” said Angara. According to the Education Secretary, DepEd will not be strict about students’ dress code as they know that classrooms in the country can get hot, especially during times of extreme weather conditions.
During a Senate budget hearing on Friday, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said DepEd is preparing measures to mitigate the effects of El Niño, including early dismissals, class suspensions, and shortened class hours. Angara said schools are mandated to conduct an early dismissal of kids during high temperatures. “In the extreme situations, mayroong pag tumama na po ng 40 plus degrees yung temperature then you have to send, really have to send. like China. "Wrapping it in ‘we love peace’ does not change what it is. He says we should ‘feel fortunate’ to have a neighbor like China. Our fishermen driven away from Bajo de Masinloc do not feel fortunate," Tarriela said. "No people feel fortunate when a larger neighbor repeatedly violates the law and then tells them to be thankful it was not worse…Not using force against a country whose rights you are already violating is not peace. It is coercion by other means,” the PCG official added. Beijing claims most of the South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea, despite an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis, and Philippine and Chinese ships have engaged in repeated confrontations in recent years, some leading to collisions and injuries. The Chinese Embassy, for its part, pushed back Friday, accusing the DFA of “selective quotation and over-
interpretation.” It urged the DFA to play a “more responsible role” in preventing attempts by unnamed individuals to undermine bilateral exchanges and cooperation, adding that bilateral relations are now at an “extremely sensitive stage.” Asked whether the controversy could damage bilateral ties, Palace Press officer Claire Castro said: “Our relationship with China in terms of trade and investment is one thing, but protecting our territory and our interests in the West Philippine Sea is another matter.” Senators and congressmen on Friday denounced the statement made by the Chinese ambassador. “His statements are gray zone aggression in diplomatic form, meant to intimidate and coerce while stopping just short of war. Let it be clear to China that no threat will make us surrender what is rightfully ours,” Senator Risa Hontiveros said.
“The Philippine government must demand a formal retraction and apology from Beijing. If none comes, the ambassador should be declared persona non grata,” she added. Hontiveros said the government must raise this threat before ASEAN and the United Nations General Assembly. Senator Erwin Tulfo said nobody can bully the Philippines, whether through words or by force. “We do not take lightly the statement that China can ‘easily win’ if it uses force against the Philippines. As a peace-loving country that upholds democracy and international law, the Filipino people will not back down in the face of these threats,” he said. “When a larger power tells a smaller nation that it could easily win if it chose force, it is not offering security. It is asserting dominance and expecting silence in return. That is the opposite of peace,” Deputy Speaker Francisco Paolo Ortega V said.
Deputy Speaker Jefferson Khonghun added: “The Philippines has never asked China for mercy. We have asked only for compliance with UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award. China’s continued water-cannoning, ramming, and blocking of Philippine vessels show that the restraint it advertises is selective and conditional.” Retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, who was part of the legal team that prepared the country’s arbitration case against China in 2013, said Jing must be expelled if repeats his remark that China would easily win against the Philippines if it resorted to the use of force. “BBM should warn him that the next time he does it again he will be expelled,” he said in an interview with Manila Standard yesterday. Carpio said the ambassador should be declared persona non grata if he continues with his propaganda.
arrangements after receiving information from Malaysian authorities. According to Gumban, Toledo allegedly contacted Mendoza to arrange the flight's arrival. Mendoza, a member of the PNP Aviation Security Group, then allegedly coordinated with Fabrigas, identified by authorities as an operations manager. Investigators said the funds for the arrangements allegedly came from Rimbang, who authorities suspect financed the operation. Authorities also identified Makalaktas as the listed consignee who was supposed to receive the shipment in Manila. Remulla has since said the case raised concerns about the possible use of private aviation facilities to bring illegal drugs into the country, adding that authorities would review security procedures and consider tighter inspections of cargo arriving through private aircraft at the Manila International Airport's general aviation area.

NWRB chief Sevilio David Jr. on Friday said they lowered the allocation for the National Capital Region to 44 to 46 cubic meters per second in October from the usual 50 to 52 m³/s. The water allocation for irrigation systems was also reduced to 20 to 25 m³/s from the regular 35 m³/s, he added. “For the month of October, we have an adjustment. Meaning, we lowered the requirement of water supply for Metro Manila, including households and industries. But this does not necessarily mean there will be a reduction supply at the household level,” he said in an interview over ANC headstart. “For now, the water supply for Metro Manila is enough. We have sufficient water supply for Metro Manila until the end of this year or early next year,” he added.
Based on the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration report as of Friday at 8 a.m., the water level in Angat Dam, Bulacan was at 209.31 meters with a water level deviation of 0.07 meters from its normal high water level of 210 meters. Angat Dam supplies 90 percent of Metro Manila’s water needs and provides irrigation water for farmlands in Bulacan and Candaba, Pampanga. The NWRB is stepping up its water conservation campaign and focusing on demand management, instead of adopting new restrictions, David said. Some of the measures included rainwater harvesting; water recycling and reuse; repair of leaks in households and businesses, and conservation of water for non-essential use as well as stronger conservation intervention under an existing administrative order requiring a 10 percent reduction in water consumption in government offices.
Narra address, and one to Aguado. Asked by Sandiganbayan Third Division chairman and Associate Justice Karl Miranda what made him testify even if there were supposed offers of a substantial amount of money for his silence, Orbillo said if they accepted the offer, nobody would have talked about corruption in the flood control projects. Miranda reminded the witness that he should only speak for himself. “Don’t speak for the others, I am asking only you.” Miranda told the witness that talk is always cheap. In the course of his testimony, Romualdez’s lawyer Rashel Ann Pomoy tried to assail the credibility and reliability of the February 2026 joint affidavit of 18 former bodyguards of resigned Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co. Orbillo is among the 18 who signed the joint affidavit. Quoting lawyer Levito Baligod,
counsel of the 18 former security aides of Co, Pomoy said the sworn statement contained errors as it included Senator Loren Legarda and former Justice Secretary-turned-Mamamayang Liberal Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima. She said the joint affidavit that included erroneous accusations against Legarda and De Lima was the principal basis of subsequently allegations against Romualdez that led to the filing of a plunder case against the former Speaker. Asked by Pomoy if he was aware of Baligod’s statements that the February affidavit contained errors, Orbillo answered in the affirmative. The prosecution panel objected to the Romualdez lawyer’s line of questioning, saying Orbillo could not answer for Baligod’s “error” statement. However, Pomoy, argued that Orbillo could be asked such questions
since he signed the February 2026 affidavit which Baligod said contained errors. “He is one of the affiants (signatories) of the affidavit as indicated by Atty. Baligod. These [errors] directly affect the matters of the affidavit because [there are] affiants who have recanted inclusion of certain individuals, and that Atty Baligod said these were errors,” she said. “We want to know who is the person that is behind them coming out and saying these things,” she said. During her cross examination of Orbillo, Pomoy also cited the recantation made by Mark Bunagan and Dennis Loma, given that Orbillo stated in his August 2026 affidavit submitted to the Ombudsman that he was with Bunagan and Loma in his money deliveries to Romualdez. Orbillo said he wasn’t aware of the retractions of Bunagan and Loma.

tempered by the prospect of additional supply from Russia and the release of diesel stocks from G7 nations, although doubts remain whether the US-Russia diesel deal will deliver meaningful additional supply,” the source said. He said easing supply concerns in Asia and improving gasoline availability as refineries return from turnaround have pressured prices, leading to a week-on-week easing. “Heightened supply concerns due to continued shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks by Houthis on Saudi Arabia have caused oil to rise. However, increased Gulf oil flows and output from Russia, emergency stock releases, and the possible easing of restrictions by the US on sanctioned vessels that could lower freight costs have put a lid on prices,” he said. NIA regional manager Ronilio Cervantes said some 14,700 farmers face economic dislocation due to the expected prolonged dry spell. Kalinga has the highest number of farmers who will be affected by the drought during the next cropping season with 8,980 farmers, followed by Apayao with 3,204, Ifugao with 2,000, Benguet with 321, Abra with 113, and Mountain Province with 75. Cervantes claimed that the vulnerable farmlands are currently irrigated by existing national and communal irrigation systems in the region. Dexter A. See
Bishop urges mining freeze in Catanduanes AN OFFICIAL of the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called for a moratorium on mining in Catanduanes, citing environmental risks and reported deaths at the mining sites. In a pastoral letter dated Oct. 14, Virac Bishop Luisito Occiano urged authorities to require independent environmental assessments and public consultations before approving mining projects that could pose serious risks to the environment and the people. Occiano also called for investigations into reported deaths and stricter enforcement of safety and environmental laws. The bishop questioned assurances that a proposed coal mining project would cover only five hectares, saying its potential impact on communities and water sources required careful assessment. He urged authorities to suspend or halt operations, in accordance with the law, where serious harm or violations are established. Vito Barcelo

Police arrest 14 ‘Maleta Boys,’ lawyer, on unjust vexation charge THE police on Friday arrested lawyer Levito Baligod and 14 former security aides of former party-list representative Zaldy Co in San Juan City over unjust vexation charges. She said the presentation of evidence concerning alleged anomalies involving a public official should not automatically be interpreted as an attempt to destroy that official’s reputation. THE Office of the Ombudsman on Friday filed three counts of graft before the Sandiganbayan against former Pampanga Third District Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. over his alleged financial interest in a construction company that pocketed over P611 million in government flood control contracts during his incumbency. Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said the filing of the case was part of the agency’s commitment to pursuing accountability amid investigations into questionable government infrastructure projects. Investigations revealed that Gonzales still benefited from the construction companies while serving as a member of the House of Representatives. “There’s a divestment but it still flows back to him. The money goes back to him. So there was really no real divestment, right? Because if you trace the anti-money laundering records, payments to his construction companies where he supposedly divested still goes to his private bank accounts,” Remulla noted.

SOME 539 representatives for extra-judicial victims are participating in proceedings before the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to the crimes against humanity charge lodged against former President Rodrigo Duterte stemming from his bloody anti-drugs war. The group seeks recognition of their suffering and accountability, according to a trial brief filed by the group called Common Legal Representatives of the Victims (CLRV). The CLRV submitted a 108-page brief on Oct. 13 outlining the participants’ interests and the psychological, physical, economic and social harm they and their families say they experienced. The figure of 539 refers to the victims participating in the proceedings, not to the number of people killed, the group said.
The brief discusses deaths and alleged attempted killings involving family members, as well as the effects on surviving relatives, including children who lost parents or other family members. According to the filing, 143 of the 539 participating victims, or 27 percent, were children when the incidents occurred, while 89, or 17 percent, were still children at the time covered by the brief. At least 57 children reportedly stopped attending school for at least a year after a family member was killed. The brief also said 190 family members, or about 73 percent of those identified as killed or survivors of attempted killings, had been breadwinners. Some reportedly earned as little as P100 a day. The victims’ representatives described how surviving families struggled to pay funeral and legal expenses and meet basic needs after losing relatives who supported their households.

QC links biz permits with fire inspections THE Quezon City government has integrated its online business permit system with the Bureau of Fire Protection’s Fire Safety Inspection System (FSIS), becoming the pilot city and the first local government to connect with the BFP platform. The integration links the Quezon City Online Business Permit Application System (OBPAS) with FSIS through secure data sharing. Using the Mayor’s Permit number, business details, including business name, address and business area, can be retrieved from OBPAS for use in processing fire safety requirements. The arrangement means entrepreneurs no longer have to submit the same business information to separate government systems. The city aims to reduce repetitive data entry, coordinate permit processing and improve payment tracking. Rio N. Araja

Cruz FORMER Northern Samar lawmaker Raul Aguila Daza, who served seven terms in the House of Representatives and three terms as provincial governor, has died at the age of 91, his family confirmed Thursday. In a statement, the family said Daza passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of public service, democratic advocacy and commitment to the people of Northern Samar. “For more than five decades, he devoted his life to public service as a lawyer, certified public accountant, legislator, governor, and political leader,” the family said. Daza served seven terms in the House from 1969 to 2019, including as Speaker Pro Tempore and Senior Deputy Speaker. He also served as governor of Northern Samar for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2010. A member of the Liberal Party for 61 years, beginning in 1965, Daza opposed the declaration of martial law by former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and efforts to abolish Congress. He later went into self-exile in the United States after Marcos ordered his arrest, continuing his opposition to the dictatorship while in California. “He was a steadfast defender of democracy, justice, and the rule of law, standing firm in his convictions through the martial law years and political exile,” his family said. Daza served as Liberal Party president from 1994 to 1998 and later chaired the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats. He was also a bar topnotcher and a certified public accountant.
PNP spokesperson Colonel Allen Rae Co said investigators are following clues and leads but do not yet have a facial composite of the shooter and the rider involved in the killing. Co said the task group has convened and is using backtracking and other investigative tools to identify the perpetrator. Investigators are simultaneously reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing possible witnesses and tracing the suspects’ movements before and after the shooting, he said. Co said police are looking at all angles, including the broadcaster’s work and a possible grudge. He said the killing may be connected to the victim’s work as a journalist and commentator, as subjects of his commentaries could have been angered by them, but added that it is premature to reach that conclusion. The PNP holds regular meetings with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) to improve protocols for protecting media practitioners and to plan other measures for journalists’ safety, Co said. He said the task force has expressed concern over the killing and that the PNP condemns the attack.
Leonen: ‘Unmindful’ use of AI leads to injustice By Gwyneth Nolasco SUPREME Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen has urged lawyers, judges and law students to use artificial intelligence (AI) critically, warning that unmindful reliance on the technology could lead to injustice. Speaking at the Supreme Court’s AI Caravan lecture at the University of the Philippines College of Law in Diliman, Quezon City, on Oct. 12, Leonen said those who understand AI and its limitations have an advantage over those who do not. The lecture, titled “The Critical Use of AI: Challenges for the Philippine Legal Profession and the Judiciary,” was part
of the SC’s efforts to guide the public on its Governance Framework on the Use of Human-Centered Augmented Intelligence in the judiciary. Leonen illustrated the risks through the account of a female witness who struggled to describe in her own words what had been done to her. An interpreter used voice-to-text software to transcribe her statement, which could then become data for a system trained to interpret what she meant. Leonen cautioned that the woman’s experience could be reduced to a data point, stripping away context that may be essential to understanding her account. The SC allows the use of Scriptix, a voice-to-text program for court stenog-
raphers. Leonen stressed that stenographers must review and edit the software’s output before it becomes the official court transcript. Digitalization distinguished from AI Under its Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022–2027, the SC has also pursued digitalization, which Leonen distinguished from AI. Digitalization moves court records, filings, summonses and other processes from paper to electronic platforms, helping shorten procedures that previously took months or years. AI, by contrast, analyzes case data and can generate orders or judgments based on the information it processes, he said.

Leyte landing legacy

Clean energy, done the right way THE Philippines has a twin problem: power and climate. And it cannot solve one by ignoring the other, while demand for electricity keeps rising. Typhoons are getting fiercer. Fuel imports leave households exposed to price shocks they did not cause. Renewable energy, including wind, is one of the few tools that addresses all three at the same time. That is the context in which Vena Energy operates in the country. Reason why, as observers like us note, the company’s record deserves a fair reading. Observers note that permits must always be first. Across its Philippine wind projects, Vena Energy’s position has been seen as consistent: it works within the law and secures the required approvals before it builds. Instance, for the Rizal and Talim projects, the company has pointed to its Environmental Compliance Certificates from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and, in Rizal, Free Prior and Informed Consent from the indigenous communities concerned. We see these as not just formalities since they follow reviews of environmental impact assessments and engineering designs. Regulators have looked as well.. When conservation advocates asked for a cease-and-desist order and revocation of the Rizal project’s ECC, the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau investigated and declined. Its regional director said there was “no sufficient basis” to conclude the project would cause grave or irreparable environmental damage. Disagreement with a regulatory finding is a legitimate part of public debate. But it is not the same as a violation of the law. Compliance is the floor, not the ceiling. What is easy to miss in the current coverage is how often Vena Energy has gone beyond what permits strictly require. Observers, over cups of coffee, have noted that in Samar, the Gemini Wind project had secured the relevant environmental and regulatory approvals. Even so, after its own independent assessment, the company decided to relocate the turbines concerned so that stakeholder and environmental concerns were addressed early. It continues to work with local government, NGOs and civil society so that turbines sit outside the protected area. Local reports acknowledged that turbines were scrapped from inside the protected landscape. In Rizal, the company, following its own research and studies, inde-
pendently decided not to progress the project, even though its permits were in place and it remains compliant with applicable requirements. Drilling and soil testing there stopped in Nov. 2023. A developer that relocates turbines and steps back from a site on the strength of its own assessment is not behaving like one that is indifferent to concerns. It is behaving like one that listens, according to observers. The debate we should have indeed. Reasonable people can ask whether every siting decision was the best one, whether consultation could have been broader, and whether communities have the information they need.

The Philippines will need more clean power, not less Vena Energy says it takes these concerns seriously and remains open to reviewing relevant scientific and technical information. That openness should be met with specifics: coordinates, maps, studies, data. Fact-based dialogue moves projects forward. Slogans do not. As the UN Environment Program’s Julian Blanc put it, the real question is not whether renewable energy will expand, but whether it expands in ways that leave landscapes, ecosystems and people better off. That, observers say, is the right test. It deserves to be applied to every energy source, including the fossil fuels the country still depends on, whose costs to health, climate and household budgets are rarely frontpage news. The Philippines will need more clean power, not less. The way to get it responsibly is through law-abiding developers, rigorous permitting, honest engagement with host communities, and a willingness to adjust when new concerns arise. On that standard, Vena Energy’s conduct is worth recognizing. Observers also noted that ACEN, the Ayala group’s listed energy company, is also one of the fastest-growing renewable energy companies in Asia Pacific, with the Philippines as its core and largest market. MGEN, Meralco’s company in charge of renewable energy, championed diversified energy strategy at the ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2026 earlier this month.
‘Real inequality’: France’s education divide laid bare by protests BAGNOLET, France – Students cheered as they stacked rubbish bins against the entrance to a school outside Paris, while a speaker thumped out French rap to young people, teachers and parents mingling in the early morning drizzle. Perched on a low wall alongside friends, 18-year-old Abdel rattled off the problems that drove him to protest in his final year of secondary school in the eastern suburb of Bagnolet. “I had a biology teacher who wasn’t there at the start of the year,” he told AFP at the protest on Tuesday. When a replacement finally arrived halfway through the year, he was an English teacher. “I missed a year’s worth of lessons.” The toilets are in a “pitiful” state, some without locks; internet access is patchy in classrooms, and a lack of printer ink sometimes leaves handouts unreadable, he added, his friends nodding along. “There’s a real inequality between us and students in Paris,” he said. Abdel, who hopes to study business management, is among hundreds of thousands of pupils who have taken to
the streets across France since late September over learning conditions. The protests have drawn fresh attention to longstanding inequalities in France’s education system, where schools serving the poorest communities often struggle for resources despite substantial public spending. AFP spoke to teachers at several schools, including three in the Ile-deFrance region around Paris, and pupils at one.

One school referred AFP to departmental authorities, while the others and the ministry had not responded by the time of publication. Abdel’s school did not respond to a request for comment. HE launching of the Leyte campaign on Oct 17, 1944 stands as among the most defining turning points in Philippine history.
When advance Allied forces seized the small islands guarding Leyte Gulf, they did not only initiate a massive military operation. They began fulfilling a sacred promise to a heavily brutalized nation of 18.4 million people from Batanes down to Tawi Tawi. Today’s digital generation, heavily immersed in a fast-paced world of instant gratification and virutal connections, risks viewing these historical narratives as mere blackand-white text on a screen. But the freedom to scroll, speak and connect today was brought to a great extent by the blood and hardly imagined grit of those who fought on the unforgiving jungles of Leyte. The liberty of the Philippines was not achieved by an effortless algorithm, but through the real-world synergy of Allied forces, including

PARIS – Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have built up a missile and drone arsenal that allows them varied and sustained strike capabilities, as Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government it sponsors are finding out. Since early September, the Houthis have hit key oil infrastructure and airports across Saudi Arabia -- notably Riyadh’s airport which has been targeted 20 times. They have also, unsuccessfully, targeted the cities of Medina and Mecca. The trigger for their return to hostilities, after a four-year truce, was a Saudi bombardment of the airport at Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, in July, to prevent a Houthi delegation landing there. Since then, there have been “tit-fortat” military strikes, said April Longley Alley, a specialist on Yemen at the Washington Institute think tank. “The Houthis framed this campaign as blockade for blockade, airport for airport, escalation for escalation,” she said. Varied arsenal The Houthis possess a large range of ballistic missiles and drones which they are using to also hit targets in the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the entrance to the Red Sea. The group’s missile stocks partly come from arsenals seized when it took Yemen’s capital Sanaa in 2014, as well as “whole systems smuggled in, or self-manufactured systems built from parts that were themselves smuggled into Yemen, primarily via the Arabian Sea,” explained Niranjan BS, a strategic weapons analyst at Jane’s, the opensource intelligence company. According to the International Insti-
In addition, the Houthis also have a range of cruise missiles from Iran’s family of Quds missiles, of which the version 4 is believed to have a range of 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles), according to the Wilson Center. They also have a range of drones, both air and maritime, at least some of which were derived from Iranian models. The Waeid-1 and Waeid-2 aerial drones, for example, are “local copies of the Iranian Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 one-way attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) respectively,” the analyst Niranjan BS said. Iran’s support “Iran has provided critical military assistance to the Houthis, particularly with the delivery of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems,” the Middle East Institute said in a report. “Missile and UAV parts are designed and manufactured in Iran and smuggled into Yemen via small boats, con-
tainer ships, or over the Oman-Yemen border, where they are assembled,” it said. However an Israeli analyst specialised in Iran, Danny Citrinowicz, cautioned that the Houthis “see themselves as partners of Iran, not proxies. This is why when people are saying Iran instructed the Houthis, it’s not working like that.” “The Iranians have a strong presence in Yemen,” set up by the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, he said at a recent conference in Paris. But those operatives only advise, they don’t decide Houthi operations, he said. In June 2024, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on a man in China suspected of links to the Houthis, who it said played “a key role in procuring materials that enable Houthi forces to manufacture advanced conventional weapons inside Yemen”. Able to endure Having already weathered years of conflict, the Houthis are seen as capable of using their arsenal for a long time to come. “We need to remember with the Houthis that they have withstood punishing air campaigns before, from the Saudis, from the Americans, and from the Israelis,” said the Washington Institute’s Longley Alley. “This is a battle-hardened group, and they have much less to lose than the Saudis.” She added that “the Houthis are probably calculating that they can go longer because they’re used to absorbing these strikes.” AFP
tions are shared by his teachers, including Fatoumata Danso, 30, who has taught economic and social sciences at the Eugene Henaff high school for five years. At a protest in central Paris last week, she told AFP there was a stark divide in resources between the 1,300 Eugene Henaff pupils and those in wealthier areas. One of her colleagues has “36 or 37 students” in an advanced maths class, she said. “We don’t have time to look after them properly.” Many pupils in Bagnolet, where the poverty rate is almost twice the national average of 15 percent, face precarity long before they enter the classroom. “Some are homeless, some are very poor, there are migrants,” Danso said, while others are undocumented and face orders to leave France. “We’re among the schools with the greatest needs so the students really need the most seasoned teachers.” ’How the money is spent’ France spends 24 percent more per
pupil on upper secondary education than the OECD average, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says. Yet its latest PISA scores -- an international survey which measures the skills of 15-year-olds -- were the country’s worst since the rankings began in 2000. For OECD education analyst Eric Charbonnier, “it is a question of how the money is spent”. Nearly a third of the education ministry’s budget for 2027 will go towards pensions, according to a government report on the draft spending plan. Educational inequality has been debated in France for 25 years, with disparities emerging as early as nursery school, Charbonnier said. “Disadvantaged children attend disadvantaged schools, located in disadvantaged areas,” he said. Despite investment over the past decade to boost the chances of pupils from these areas, “when you look at the breakdown by school, it’s often the most disadvantaged schools that lack
resources”. “Fewer teachers want to work there, so the teachers are younger, there are more temporary staff, and there’s higher absenteeism,” he said. Across France, pupils last year lost 15.4 million hours of teaching because absent staff were not replaced, according to the education ministry. ‘Give my chair to pupils’ The ministry last week promised 3,000 substitute teachers for the country’s 114 worst-affected secondary schools, and said on Wednesday it had already dispatched 2,000. But teachers are not the only staff in short supply. In the nearby suburb of Aubervilliers, where 42 percent of households are poor, philosophy teacher Cloe Jean said Henri Wallon secondary school had no nurse for its 1,000 students. “There are a lot of pupils who have fainted and who did not receive any medical attention,” Jean told AFP. Even chairs are in short supply. “I’ve had to give my desk chair to pupils,” she added. AFP
tute for Strategic Studies’ Military Balance database, the Houthis have several types of medium-range missiles, several of them derived from Iranian models, such as the Kheibar Shekan. They also have short-range missiles, such as the Asef anti-ship missile derived from Iran’s Khalij Fars class of missile, noted the Wilson Center think tank.

Understanding Leyte allows modern youth to look beyond the iconic image of Gen. Douglas MacArthur wading ashore and appreciate the millions of nameless citizens who endured years of occupation by Hirohito’s imperial troops. It serves as a reminder that sovereignty and democracy are fragile inheritances requiring active protection rather than guaranteed settings. By engaging with this history online – whether through digital archives, podcasts or virtual memorials – young Filipinos can bridge the gap between the past and the present. At the end of the day, remembering Oct 17 transfortms historical knowledge into a profound appreciation for national identity and resilience. The internet generation holds the unique digital power to amplify these ancestral narratives, ensuring that the legacy ofof fades into obscurity.

European leaders rally around Zelenskyy as Trump ties slump IN BRIEF Europe must tackle Starlink dependency BRUSSELS – EU leaders grappled Friday with how to tackle Ukraine’s dependence on Starlink satellite communications supporting its battlefield operations, as Kyiv was rocked by disruptions to the USowned system. The bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Europe did not have a readily available alternative to technology controlled by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, as she arrived at an EU summit where the issue will be high on the agenda. “Starlink is really necessary for Ukraine and unfortunately in (the) short term Europe can’t replace this capability,” Kallas said before the talks, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also in attendance. Ukraine uses Starshield, Starlink’s military-grade satellite service, for its battlefield communications, mid-range strikes on Russian-occupied territory and interceptor drones. It also uses SpaceX’s parallel Starlink civilian satellite system, but not for offensive operations. AFP
BRUSSELS – European leaders on Friday rallied around Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Kyiv’s ties with US President Donald Trump have nosedived and worries grow that US leader is increasingly siding with Russia. Relations between Kyiv and Washington have soured since last week, when Trump eased sanctions on Russia in exchange for Moscow releasing
large amounts of diesel onto global markets. Zelensky infuriated Trump further by ordering Ukraine’s forces to restart strikes on Russian oil refineries in defiance of Washington’s demands. Meanwhile anger in Ukraine has been heightened by disruptions to a critical US-provided satellite system that has hampered its military’s abil-
ity to counter Russia’s intense bombardments ahead of the harsh winter months. “This is no time to withdraw the support to Ukraine. This is no time to relieve Russia’s sanctions,” European Council chief Antonio Costa said, standing alongside Zelenskyy at an EU summit in Brussels. “Now it is time to increase our support, to increase our

Clark renews call for AI regulation BANGKOK – Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark renewed calls on Friday for regulating artificial intelligence, saying that allowing companies to continue to operate without robust legislation was like letting a race car loose on the streets at night without brakes. “It’s remarkable to me that the toys I buy for my children are regulated more than the literal super intelligence I work on at my day job,” he told an event at the IMF-World Bank’s Annual Meetings in Bangkok. Clark said that US President Donald Trump, whose administration has called for the industry to police itself, was against the idea of regulation but that China was not. “I think it’s Formula One at night without maybe brakes in the cars,” he said. He said the lack of clarity around the will for regulation meant “the Formula One car is roaring round and nobody seems to want to put up a guardrail?”AFP
Albanian PM blames ‘foreign hands’ TIRANA, Albania – Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama called for calm on Friday and blamed “foreign hands” for days of violent unrest as protesters again gathered in the capital and other cities. Since Tuesday, violent demonstrations have gripped Tirana, with thousands of protesters calling for Rama’s resignation over poor university conditions and high tuition fees. Protests also spread to several other cities as students joined university boycotts, marking a significant escalation after months of anti-government protests in the country. Overnight clashes between police and groups of mostly masked protesters continued into the early hours of Friday. The finance ministry entrance was set ablaze, and the windows of a university complex were smashed. According to a police statement, 160 protesters were detained for committing acts of violence on Thursday evening. AFP

UNSC slams ‘escalatory’ Houthi attacks UNITED NATIONS, New York – The UN Security Council issued a joint statement on Thursday (Friday Manila time) condemning the “escalatory” attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia, including “reckless strikes” on Riyadh’s airport. The Saudi capital’s international airport has been targeted by strikes 20 times since the beginning of the month, with an attack last weekend killing 13 people and wounding more than 300. In a joint statement shared by the Security Council’s president, Greece’s Evangelos Sekeris, the 15-member UN body “condemned in the strongest terms
continued and escalatory Houthi attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” as well as “continued Houthi attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab (Strait).” The statement also “affirmed the inherent right of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia of self-defence in accordance with international law.” Since the airport attack, the Saudi coalition reported Thursday it had intercepted a missile in the region of Medina, one of the holiest cities in Islam. The Houthis, who have repeatedly said they would spare Islam’s holy sites, denied being behind the attack.
The Houthis launched a deadly missile attack Thursday on the presidential palace in the Yemeni government’s interim capital of Aden, hitting command centres located inside the compound used by government forces and the Saudi-led military coalition that supports them. Yemeni health minister Qasim Buhaibeh said the attack left five people dead and 16 injured “among those working to guard the site and civilian employees.” Yemen’s civil war -- in which Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting the government since 2015 -reignited in September after the collapse of a years-long truce. Officers rushed to Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, a city of about 100,000 in the nation’s northwest, after reports of a shooter on campus on Thursday afternoon. The three children who died on the scene were aged five, eight and 11, said Bend police chief Mike Krantz. Another child and a teacher were being treated for critical injuries after the shooting. The United States, where firearms are readily available, has a long and painful history of gun violence, with thousands of people killed every year. It has the highest rate of gun-related deaths among all developed nations. People gathered in the city’s Drake Park on Thursday evening for a candelight vigil remembering the victims. “I’m in total complete shock, and scared and sad,” said Betsy, who did not give her last name. She spent around 10 minutes contemplating a circle of candles and flowers. “It’s awful, but it also has brought people together,” she told AFP. Krantz, the police chief, told journalists that the department first learned of an active shooter after a call from a person who reported being shot at multiple times by a person carrying a long gun. Dozens of emergency calls then reported that a shooter had entered the school and all law enforcement in the area were called to the scene, the chief added. Officers arrived at 1:02 pm local time (2002 GMT) within minutes of the calls, he said. “Moments later, an officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Krantz said. Families demand justice in school roof collapse PESHAWAR, Pakistan – The families of children killed in a roof collapse at a school in northwest Pakistan called for “justice” on Friday, the day after more than 30 pupils and a teacher were crushed to death. A woman teacher and 32 students, mostly younger than 14, died in the building collapse in the city of Peshawar on Thursday morning. “The parents of all these children must receive justice,” tailor Muhammad Wahab, who lost his 11-year-old nephew Hammad in the accident, told AFP on Friday. “I appeal to our rulers,” he said, adding that Hammad had been “doing well in school” before the tragedy. Dozens of people gathered on Friday outside the school to mourn the children who were killed in the collapse, which officials blamed on dilapidated infrastructure. One grief-stricken father showed AFP a picture on his mobile phone of his young daughter, dressed in red and gold, who lost her life. Another parent, Asadullah, said he lost a son, nephew, and three other close relatives in the tragedy. “The children were good students and often achieved top positions in their classes,” he told AFP. “They happily went to school every day.” Residents and rescuers described chaotic scenes in the aftermath of Thursday’s collapse, as people scrambled to pull children out from under the rubble. JAKARTA – Four people died on Indonesia’s Java island fighting the blazes that have sent toxic smoke across southeast Asia, closed schools and fuelled a surge of respiratory complaints, authorities said Friday. The impact of the months-long fires has also prompted Singapore’s leader to vow legal action against any companies responsible for the blazes that have made regional air quality among the world’s worst. Singapore again topped IQAir’s live ranking of the world’s most polluted major cities on Friday, with Kuala Lumpur second and Jakarta eighth. “Where warranted, we will take action under Singapore’s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act, and also explore joint action with other countries,” said Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, without giving further details.
The law allows authorities to target companies whose activities overseas cause or contribute to unhealthy haze levels in Singapore Legal experts have cautioned that pursuing companies linked to the smoke is challenging, with investigations reliant on cooperation from foreign authorities. Singapore has no plantations or forests of its own, but several companies with concessions in Indonesia are reportedly based in the city-state. Singapore’s investigations into four Indonesian companies over their alleged role in the 2015 haze crisis remain open, a case that strained relations with Jakarta at the time. An official at Indonesia’s national police investigations agency on Wednesday said it was probing companies responsible for the fires, but did not give specific names. AFP
Trump’s new press secretary admits failing bar exam WASHINGTON, DC – New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia acknowledged on Thursday (Friday Manila time) that she had failed the bar exam, a prerequisite for practicing law in the United States, as her credentials face scrutiny. Zacharia has described herself as a lawyer during television appearances and on social media, and listed herself as general counsel of a California-based conservative nonprofit. But the legal credentials of the press secretary, who President Donald Trump appointed last week, were called into question after she gave an inconclusive answer about where she had passed the bar exam. The 41-year-old graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011, but obtaining a law degree does not automatically qualify someone to practice law.
In a Fox News interview on Thursday, host Sean Hannity asked Zacharia: “You took the bar exam, but you didn’t pass the bar exam, correct?” “Yes,” she responded. In a separate interview with conservative media outlet Real America’s Voice on Thursday, Zacharia said she had registered to take the bar exam but was “distracted and overwhelmed” by plans to move to China with her husband. “The results are somewhat inconsequential because I knew I wouldn’t need the bar in China,” she said. Foreign nationals cannot sit China’s bar exam, although they can undertake certain legal work at Chinese law firms. Hannity later asked Zacharia if she had ever taken the bar exam a second time, to which she said: “I did not.” “I had four kids in six years,” she said. “It was never my intent to go into the practice of law.” AFP

PNVF forms National Team Commission STAKEHOLDERS will now have a direct and stronger voice in the formation of the national volleyball teams heading into major international tournaments. Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Executive Director Atty. Miguel Carlos Pacifico F. Suarez announced on Friday that the federation is taking a highly collaborative approach by creating a dedicated National Team Commission. The fiveman panel is designed to enable major stakeholders to air their concerns and align schedules before formally assembling the rosters for the Alas Pilipinas Men and Women squads. Suarez emphasized that the creation of the commission ensures the federation leadership moves away from the old practice of making unilateral decisions regarding national team selection, calendar management, and player availability. No less than PNVF president Frank Lao will chair the powerful body with key stakeholders like Sherwin Malonzo of the Premier Volleyball League, Dr. Ian Laurel of the Shakey’s Super League, Fr. Victor Calvo of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Bo Perasol of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines as members. Malonzo and Laurel bring deep administrative experience from previous PNVF setups, while Calvo and Perasol oversee the nation’s top collegiate sports programs, ensuring full representation across all levels of Philippine volleyball. “The establishment of the National Team Commission is a major step in the right direction. By giving stakeholders a direct and stronger voice, we are ensuring a more inclusive, transparent, and collaborative approach to forming and supporting our national team,” Suarez said in an official statement. “With this special panel, we are removing the old practice of leadership making unilateral decisions without consulting key stakeholders on player schedules and availability. We are now giving everyone a unified voice to guarantee a far more collaborative and sustainable national team program.”

ATENEO de Manila University stakes its double crown as the UAAP Season 89 Collegiate Badminton Championships open today (Saturday) at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City, featuring a new team competition format designed to make the tournament more competitive. The Blue Eagles are out to defend their men’s title and capture their sixth championship in the division after breaking their tie with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons last season. They will also aim for a second consecutive women’s crown after fending off firsttime finalists National University Lady Bulldogs last year. The team event will still follow a single round-robin format, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. The top-ranked squad will face the fourth seed, while the second-ranked team takes on the third. All ties in the knockout stage will be do-or-die. Both Ateneo squads will be without their longtime captains, Lyrden Laborte and Mika De Guzman, but will look to Robby Ramos and Lance Vargas in the men’s division, and Althea Ocampo and Rio Fuentespina in the women’s division to lead the way as they navigate the new format. Aside from the team competition, which will retain its traditional five-match tie, the championships will introduce separate singles and doubles knockout competitions at its conclusion. The additional events aim to maximize the participation of student-athletes on each roster while providing member universities that cannot field complete teams an opportunity to compete.

OS ANGELES — The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 to reach baseball’s World Series for the first time in 44 years on Thursday after completing a 4-0 series sweep of the star-studded defending champions. The top-seeded Brewers once again combined relentless offense with clinical relief pitching at Dodger Stadium to fight back from an early 4-0 deficit and snuff out the Dodgers’ hopes of a rare World Series three-peat. The Brewers, who last reached the World Series in 1982, will face either the Cleveland Guardians or Tampa Bay Rays in baseball’s championship series. “We’ve still got a ways to go. We’ve still got some big games in front of us,” Brewers team captain Christian Yelich said. “We’ve been so close to this so many times. Credit to our guys, our
Brewers sweep Dodgers to reach ‘26 World Series team, they stuck together, battled. We got down early, we were like it’s gonna be a great story when we come back and win this.” Brewers skipper Pat Murphy meanwhile said simply: “They may have a bunch of Hall of Famers, but we have a bunch of gamers. And the gamers won this week.” After a lackluster defeat in game three on Wednesday, the Dodgers had been left needing to become only the second team in Major League Baseball history to overturn a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series. When Shohei Ohtani smashed a three-run home run deep into right field in the bottom of the second inning – the Japanese superstar’s first home run in nearly two months – Dodgers fans dared to dream of a miracle. But Ohtani’s mammoth blast was to
prove the highlight of another largely inconsistent performance by the expensively-assembled Dodgers offense, who squandered a series of late opportunities to get back into the game after stranding runners on third base in multiple innings. Instead it was the Brewers – swept 4-0 by the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series last year – who rallied to a deserved victory. Outplayed by ‘flawless’ Brewers Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had few complaints at the loss, saying the 2024 and 2025 MLB champions had been comprehensively outplayed. “At the end of the day, we got beat,” Roberts said. “We got outplayed in all facets. Those guys played flawless. “Defensively they pitched better than we did, they hit better than we did, they
slugged more than we did. You’ve got to sometimes just tip your cap. “I personally told our guys that there’s no apologies, there’s no sorries. We gave it everything we had, and it wasn’t good enough. That’s part of life.” The Brewers had initially struggled to find a way past Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow but began making inroads in the fourth inning after Brice Turang and William Contreras got on base. Jake Bauers -- who was named series Most Valuable Player -- stepped up to drive a double into right field and suddenly the Dodgers lead had been cut to 4-2. David Hamilton singled to score Sal Frelick in the fifth inning to make it 4-3, and when Bauers drew a walk with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Brewers had drawn level. AFP
Tight finishes set stage for ICTSI South Pacific Classic A STRING of one-shot victories and dramatic finishes has set the tone for the Philippine Golf Tour, and the ICTSI South Pacific Classic looms as another test of nerve and precision when the P2.5-million championship unfolds Tuesday (Oct. 20) at the South Pacific Golf and Leisure Estates in Davao City. Rupert Zaragosa’s narrow escape at last Thursday’s Pueblo de Oro Championship underscored the depth, parity and unpredictability of the country’s premier circuit, where no player has established a commanding edge and the title remains anyone’s for the taking heading into the four-day battle for the crown and the top prize. The Pueblo de Oro finish was another reminder of how fine the margins have become. Zaragosa bogeyed the final hole without realizing he had done enough to secure the victory, with his caddie ultimately assuring him that he had survived a tense finish to snap a year-long title drought. “I actually had a feeling I could win at Pueblo because everything felt

right. My game was in good shape, I was hitting the ball well, and my putting was coming together. I felt I had a real chance,” said Zaragosa, who claimed his fourth career title following his breakthrough victory in Iloilo in 2023 and back-to-back triumphs at the Negros Occidental stop in 2024 and 2025.
After several previous campaigns in which he contended but failed to close the deal, Zaragosa finally put everything together at Pueblo de Oro. He stayed within striking distance through the first three rounds before delivering a closing 68 to edge Keanu Jahns and Zanieboy Gialon by one. Now, with his confidence restored,
Zaragosa hopes to carry that same composure and winning mindset into South Pacific, where a formidable cast of contenders is poised to renew the circuit’s run of nail-biting finishes. The recent run of close calls has been remarkable. Angelo Que edged Aidric Chan by two strokes at Summit Point, Art Arbole captured his breakthrough victory in Negros Occidental by one over Jeffren Lumbo, and Jhonnel Ababa ended a two-year title drought with another one-shot triumph over Lumbo in Iloilo. Zaragosa then kept the trend going at Pueblo de Oro, setting up another potentially dramatic showdown in Davao. Lumbo, in particular, has unfinished business. After back-to-back runner-up finishes, he remained in contention at Pueblo de Oro before fading in the final round. The defending South Pacific champion, however, has every reason to be confident at a venue where he outlasted Russell Bautista in a grueling five-hole playoff last year. He now seeks to become a back-to-back winner and further cement his legacy in the event.
Letran downs San Beda, boosts playoffs bid in Shakey’s league LETRAN breathed life into its playoffs hopes after eliminating San Beda University from contention, 25-22, 25-14, 25-21, in Pool A of the 2026 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Unity Cup on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Judiel Nitura sparked the Lady Knights’ comeback from three points down in the middle of the third frame, powering a decisive 7-0 blitz to regain control on their way to their second win in three games. Letran moved up to solo second behind defending champion National University (3-0), which is already through to the next stage of the league’s centerpiece competition, backed by Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Potato Corner and R&B Milk Tea. Nitura scored seven of her 11 points in the third set while Kaizah Huyno and Gia Maquilang contributed eight markers each for the reigning NCAA champions, who can book the last playoffs seat in the group with a win over

Perpetual Jr. Altas notch 7th triumph By Dennis Abrina FOUR players scored in double figures as the Perpetual Help Junior Altas held off Mapua Malayan School, 82-80, to claim their seventh victory in eight games in the NCAA Season 102 Juniors Basketball Tournament crossover eliminations at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Friday. Team captain Louie Rosales spearheaded the Junior Altas with a game-high 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals to lead the Las Piñas-based squad coached by Joph Cleopas. Sizco Roquid added 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal, while Brian Orca Jr. contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and a block. Grade 10 student Sam Villaruel chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds to give Perpetual another solid contribution. Mapua leaned on Chris Parame, who delivered a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds, on top of three steals and three blocks, but his effort was not enough to prevent the Cardinals from absorbing the narrow defeat. Perpetual appeared to be in control after opening a 14-point cushion, 4430, in the final two minutes of the second quarter. Mapua responded, however, to cut the deficit to eight points, 44-36, by halftime. The Cardinals continued to threaten in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to 8178 with 47 seconds remaining. Kurt Patalinghug then fouled Anaciso Docto III, who split his free throws to make it 82-78. Parame kept Mapua in contention with an undergoal follow-up that trimmed the margin to 82-80 with 1.7 seconds left. Perpetual managed to inbound the ball and hold on as the final buzzer sounded, escaping with the two-point victory.

Top-20 ranking puts Eala’s home tourney stint in doubt By Jeremiah Sevilla
F
ILIPINA tennis star Alex Eala could miss the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open early next year due to restrictions on high-ranked players, according to the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA).
PHILTA executive director Tonette Mendoza reportedly said that world No. 19 Eala may not be eligible to compete in the WTA 125 tournament slated January 24 to 31, 2027. Under Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rules, players ranked 11th to 20th at the main draw entry deadline cannot enter Challenger-level tilts directly. However, up to two players within that ranking bracket may still compete through wildcards. Eala’s ranking could also push her to prioritize bigger tourneys over the Philippine Women’s Open, which will run smack into the second week of the 2027 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the calendar. The 21-year-old has 2,241 ranking points and

THE Meycauayan Marilao Gems fielded back their brightest stars in time to trip the Pasay Voyagers, 57-53, on Thursday and force a Game 3 decider for a semifinal slot in the SportsPlus MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) 2026 Season at the Meycauayan Sports Complex in Bulacan. After some respite, Agem Miranda and Jayson Apolonio returned in the last 3 minutes and 33 seconds and carried the Gems past the Voyagers, avenging their 64-66 defeat in the North Division series opener on Oct. 9. The fourth-seeded Gems and the fifthseeded Voyagers will tangle for the right to battle the top-ranked Abra Solid North Weavers in the semifinal round on Monday, Oct. 19, at the same venue. Bigboy Cheng with some of the initial batch of newly manufactured Grosby shoes Bigboy Cheng page
LONG before signature basketball shoes became collectors’ items, Filipino fans were already chasing a pair of Grosbys—the kicks that brought them a little closer to their PBA heroes. Now, businessman and sneaker collector Big Boy Cheng is giving a new generation a chance to discover the brand while offering older fans a trip down basketball’s memory lane. Cheng announced a collaboration between his lifestyle brand Secret Fresh and Grosby for the “Mythical 5 Heritage Collection,” scheduled for launch in 2027. “Bringing back the quintessential shoes of yesteryear, designed with a contemporary edge,” read
the social media announcement, which identified Cheng as the collection’s creative director. “Launches in 2027. More information to be posted soon.” The announcement quickly stirred memories among basketball followers who grew up wearing the brand to school, neighborhood games and varsity competitions. “Wow. Sana makabili. Shoes ko nu’ng elementar ako,” Rogelio Lazaro wrote in the comments. Another fan, Vinci C. Carag, suggested inviting PBA legends Ramon “Mon” Fernandez and Francis Arnaiz to the launch, underscoring the connection between the shoes and the players who helped shape Philippine basketball.
Few embodied that connection more vividly than Billy Ray Bates. The explosive former NBA player became a sensation with Crispa, earning the nickname “Black Superman” and a signature Grosby shoe that became part of local basketball lore. Manufactured locally by Rubberworld, Grosby produced colorful footwear for Bates during his PBA years, helping establish the brand’s presence in a market where fans wanted to wear what their basketball idols wore. Its First Five campaign also linked the brand with leading PBA players, making basketball stardom a powerful selling point well before today’s crowded signature-shoe market.
RSA Motors BMW supports Ramos as young golfer pushes onto bigger stage FILIPINO golfer Sean Ramos is entering an important stage in his career, with RSA Motors BMW continuing its support for the 22-year-old after a breakthrough season strengthened his bid to return to the Asian Tour. Ramos’ recent victory at the Egypt Golf Series 13, his first Asian Development Tour title and first international win, moved him to No. 2 on the ADT Order of Merit and significantly strengthened his position for an Asian Tour card in 2027. He won the event at Madinaty Golf Club in late September, closing with a 65 to finish at 18-under 262 and edge Denmark’s August Host by one stroke. The result capped a strong run for Ramos, who had posted several solid finishes on the Asian Development Tour before breaking through in Egypt. He followed the victory with another top 15 finish in the Egypt Golf Series 14. RSA Motors BMW has backed Ramos as its official golf ambassador as he continues to build his career in the Philippines and overseas. The partnership allows the company to support a young Filipino golfer at an important point in his development, as he gains more experience and competes on a bigger international stage.

Ramos won his first Philippine Golf Tour title at Lakewood in 2024 and has increasingly competed overseas
as he works toward establishing himself on the region’s top professional circuit. Ramos’ development also fits naturally with BMW’s long involvement in golf, which includes supporting players and tournaments around the world. In the Philippines, the company holds the annual BMW Golf Cup, an invitational tournament for BMW customers.

35% Cite food prices as top concern
26% Cite jobs as key issue
24% Cite corruption as main problem
Group asks gov’t to suspend 233% hike in sweetened beverage taxes
Food prices top Filipinos’ concerns, survey shows F By Othel V. Campos
OOD affordability remained the top concern of Filipinos, with 35 percent urging national government leaders to make basic goods cheaper, up 5 percentage points from July, according to a Pulse Asia survey commissioned by Stratbase Group. The Sept. 17 to 23 survey found that food prices, particularly rice, meat and fish, ranked ahead of job creation and livelihood opportunities, cited by 26 percent and efforts to reduce corruption, cited by 24 percent. Inflation picked up to 7.2 percent in September on rising food and transport prices. In a separate survey question, 71 percent of respondents said the Marcos administration should prioritize controlling inflation.
Food affordability was the leading concern among the poorest respondents, with 55 percent of those in socioeconomic Class E citing the issue, up 11 percentage points from July. The figure stood at 34 percent among Class D and 26 percent among Class ABC respondents. By region, concern over food prices was highest in the National Capital Region at 43 percent, followed by Luzon at 36 percent, Mindanao at 34
percent and the Visayas at 31 percent. The nationwide reading, however, remained below the 41 percent recorded in March. Stratbase Group chief executive Victor Andres Manhit said the government should address the cost of basic goods to rebuild public trust, citing separate Stratbasecommissioned Social Weather Stations surveys on the trust ratings of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte. “The public has been consistently telling government what matters most to them: the rising cost of basic goods and the ability to make ends meet. If the administration wants to rebuild public trust, it has to address these everyday concerns and deliver results that Filipinos can actually feel in their homes and communities,” he said.
THE Beverage Industry Association of the Philippines (BIAP) urged the government to defer a proposed 233-percent increase in the sweetened beverage (SB) tax, warning it could further burden consumers as inflation accelerated to 7.2 percent in September. BIAP president Juan Lorenzo Tañada said rising food and transportation costs amid the Middle East crisis make the increase ill-timed. “Given the current Middle East crisis and the tremendous increase in fuel prices, perhaps now is not the right time to implement the measure,” Tañada said at the Kapihan sa Manila forum. The increase is part of the government’s ProGRESS (Promoting Growth, Revenue, and Equity towards Socio-economic Sustainability) tax reform package. It would raise the excise tax on beverages using caloric or non-caloric sweeteners to P20 per liter from P6. The bill also would raise the tax on beverages containing high-fructose corn syrup to P40 per liter from P12. The government aims to generate additional revenue and discourage excessive sugar consumption. Tañada said the hike could hurt micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), particularly the estimated 1.3 million sari-sari stores that earn part of their income from beverage sales. The neighborhood retailers account for an estimated 63.5 percent of manufactured consumer food product sales and could face weaker demand and narrower margins as prices rise. Government projections show beverage volume sales could decline by another 27.2 percent by 2027 if the increase takes effect. Othel V. Campos
Luzon corridor draws Italian investors to boost jobs, infra By Thony Rose Lesaca FINANCE Secretary Frederick Go welcomed Italian trade representatives led by Italian Ambassador to the Philippines Davide Giglio to explore investment opportunities and expand Italy’s participation in the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC). Italy is one of 13 LEC partners, and its investments could create more jobs for Filipinos, bring in new technologies and strengthen infrastructure that connects businesses and communities as Italy deepens its role in the corridor, the Department of Finance said. Representatives from 10 Italian companies joined the meeting, including Fincantieri, CESI SpA, SIAD Macchine Impianti and MERMEC Group. They span transportation, energy, water, shipbuilding, advanced underwater technologies, irrigation, engineering and construction-related services. Italy’s flagship trade and financial institutions also joined the business mission such as Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), SIMEST, SACE and the Italian Trade Agency (ITA). Together, they provide an integrated public platform offering customized financing, guarantees and similar financial instruments to speed up the international expansion of Italian companies. “We welcome all investments in the country, especially those that cre-
ate good, quality job opportunities for our people,” said Go, who is also Philippine chair of the LEC. The Italian delegation expressed interest in exploring opportunities under the LEC and sought guidance from the Philippine government on potential projects and areas of cooperation. The Philippine LEC Core Team then presented projects and areas where Italian partners could contribute through financing, technical assistance, technology, expertise, direct investment and partnerships. “We believe the Luzon Economic Corridor is a unique opportunity for greater involvement of Italian businesses in this country. The companies present today are a vote of confidence showing commitment and interest in our long-term partnership,” Giglio said. DOF Privatization and Partnerships Group head Undersecretary Catherine Fong cited the North–South Commuter Railway Project as part of the infrastructure pipeline. She said the project could offer opportunities for Italian investment while improving mobility, connectivity and economic activity across Luzon. “Our role is clear: to attract investments to the Philippines. Our job is to promote ease of doing business, reduce costs, and make doing business in the country more predictable,” Go said.
The Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant (OGP) in Tabangao, Batangas City marks 25 years without a recordable safety incident involving harm to people or a significant process safety incident, underscoring its longstanding commitment to safe operations.
Malampaya gas plant marks 25 years of safe operations By Alena Mae S. Flores PRIME Energy Resources Development B.V. said Friday its Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant in Tabangao, Batangas City has gone 25 years without a recordable safety incident involving personal injury or a significant process safety event. The milestone underscores the plant’s commitment to protecting employees, contractors, visitors, communities and the environment. The facility has kept its “Goal Zero” safety record since Sept. 28, 2001, through continuous operations, major maintenance campaigns, facility upgrades and complex activities supporting the Malampaya Deep Wa-
ter Gas-to-Power Project in offshore northwest Palawan. “Reaching 25 years of Goal Zero is a significant operational achievement, particularly for a facility that has supported continuous gas production, major maintenance activities, and increasingly complex operations over the years,” Prime Energy president and chief executive Donnabel Kuizon Cruz said. The company credited the record to strong safety leadership, open communication and a shared health, safety, security and environment commitment among employees and contractor partners. Regular safety huddles, observation cards, incident reviews and an annual Safety Day reinforce proactive risk management.
That discipline held during Malampaya’s scheduled maintenance shutdown earlier this year, which covered the Shallow Water Platform off Palawan and the onshore plant. Crews completed the work on schedule with no recorded incidents despite its scale and complexity. Malampaya enters a new phase. Prime Energy is advancing the Malampaya Phase 4 project to develop additional indigenous gas resources, targeting first gas by the fourth quarter of 2026 to bolster domestic energy supply and extend the field’s productive life. The Malampaya project has supplied indigenous natural gas to power plants in Batangas since 2001 and is a critical pillar of national energy security.

PH shares bounce back above 5,700, peso recovers to 62.98 By Jenniffer B. Austria PHILIPPINE shares surged Friday, with the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index jumping more than 2 percent on continued bargain hunting. The peso also recovered to close at 62.985 against the U.S. dollar from Thursday’s low of 63.06. The 30-company PSEi soared 119.53 points, or 2.11 percent, to close at 5,782.70. The broader all shares index rose 44.12 points, or 1.39 percent, to 3,218.81. “The decline in global bond yields led by U.S. Treasury yields and the pullback in global oil prices helped in today’s session,” Philstocks Financial Inc. said.
Despite the market’s rise, AB Capital Securities said local overhang persists as the peso remained weak at 63.045 to the dollar during intraday trading. Five of the six sectoral indices ended higher. Services led the gains, climbing 4.09 percent, followed by financials, which rose 1.51 percent. Property gained 2.11 percent, while mining and oil advanced 2.44 percent. Industrials rose 0.90 percent. Holding firms were the sole decliners, slipping 0.12 percent. Value turnover remained tepid at P5.26 billion, indicating that the market’s gain lacked strong conviction. Market breadth was positive, with 106 advancers beating 78 decliners, while 69 stocks were unchanged.

BUSINESS European funds acquire 49% stake in Vena’s 500-MW plant By Alena Mae S. Flores NORFUND and Impact Fund Denmark have signed agreements to invest a combined 49 percent equity interest in the 500-megawatt-peak Ixus Bugallon Solar Power Project in Bugallon, Pangasinan, owned by Vena Energy. Completion of the transaction remains subject to approval by the Philippine Competition Commission and other customary closing conditions. “We are pleased to partner with Norfund and Impact Fund Denmark for the Ixus Bugallon Solar Power Project. The Philippines is an important market for Vena Energy, and this project demonstrates the scale of renewable energy infrastructure that can be delivered by bringing together strong development capabilities and long-term institutional capital,” Vena Group chief executive Nitin Apte said. “Together we look forward to supporting the Philippines’ energy transition and contributing to sustainable economic development as we continue to engineer a greener future across Asia-Pacific,” Apte added. The Ixus Bugallon Solar Power Project represents a significant addition to the country’s growing renewable energy capacity. Located next to Vena Energy’s existing 550-MWp Bugallon Solar Power Project, the new facility will expand Vena Energy’s capacity in Pangasinan to approximately 1 gigawatt-peak upon completion, expanding one of the country’s largest solar development clusters. Awarded under the Department of Energy’s second Green Energy Auction Program, the project is expected to generate enough electricity to power roughly 650,000 Philippine households annually while avoiding about 570,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The project reached financial close in July 2026, securing approximately $310 million in senior debt financing from a syndicate of eight international banks, reflecting strong global lender appetite for large-scale Philippine renewable infrastructure. Simone Grasso, Vena Group chief investment officer and global head of Vena Nexus, said the transaction represents another milestone in the company’s institutional partnership strategy.

DA seeks DSWD turnover for seized Vietnamese rice By Othel V. Campos
T
HE Department of Agriculture on Thursday opposed auctioning seized Vietnamese rice, saying the shipment should instead be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development to prevent those behind its questionable entry from profiting from the cargo. In a radio interview, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. questioned the proposal to auction the rice, which authorities seized after flagging irregularities in its importa-
tion. “I am not in favor of auctioning this,” Tiu Laurel said, warning that the rice could end up with traders seeking to profit from the 5-percent
broken DT8 variety, a highly salable rice from Vietnam. He said the government could either destroy the shipment, which would waste food, or turn it over to the DSWD for distribution to beneficiaries. Tiu Laurel also rejected a proposal to place the rice under the National Food Authority, saying the shipment should not be handled by the DA or any of its attached agencies. “Better not give it to us. Otherwise, people might think we are in cahoots with whoever tried to bring this rice even after the import permit’s cancel-
lation,” he said. The rice, carried by the MV Tay Son 2, was covered by an import permit for 12,480 metric tons. The DA ordered the cancellation of its sanitary and phytosanitary import clearance after receiving derogatory information about the cargo. The vessel arrived at the Port of Davao on Sept. 14, but its captain refused to submit the shipment for inspection by the Bureau of Plant Industry. The vessel left Davao three days later as the Bureau of Customs was determining the cargo’s disposition.

EJAP set to host infrastructure forum
THE heads of three infrastructure agencies will report on what has been delivered, what is underway and what will be completed through 2028 at the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Infrastructure Forum 2026 on Oct. 19 at the InLife Building in Makati City. Themed “Connected Philippines: Building the Nation’s Infrastructure Backbone,” the forum will bring together Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Banoy Lopez and Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Undersecretary David Almirol for a consolidated “State of the Build” presentation on the nation’s physical and digital infrastructure program. “For too long, we have covered infrastructure in silos: a road here, a rail line there, a fiber rollout somewhere else. But the people who pay for these projects experience them as one system, and they deserve one clear accounting of it,” said EJAP president John Ted Cordero. Dizon will open the program with an address on the physical backbone, covering roads, bridges and resilient public works. Lopez will follow with a report on moving people and goods across rail, aviation, maritime and road transport. Almirol will close the segment with a presentation on moving data, focusing on connectivity, digital infrastructure and what the agency calls the open access era.

RIMINI Street, Inc. (Nasdaq: RMNI), the Software Support and Agentic AI ERP Company™ and the leading third-party support provider for Oracle, SAP and VMware software, announced findings from the 2026 IT Virtualization Survey – What’s Next for VMware Users, a new global survey of nearly 300 VMware user organizations conducted by Unisphere Research on behalf of Rimini Street. “Organizations want more choice, flexibility and control over their virtualization strategies,” said Keith Costello, EVP and chief operating officer, Rimini Street. “Our suite of services for VMware helps clients reduce costs, strengthen security, improve support outcomes and extend the value of their existing VMware investments — without being forced into disruptive timelines or onesize-fits-all vendor roadmaps. These survey findings reinforce the need for practical, vendor-independent strategies that put business priorities back on the client’s terms.”
Cost Cited as the Number One Factor in Seeking Alternative VMware Solutions Key Findings: 90% of respondents said they are considering alternatives to VMware due to higher licensing costs, while 54% cited the end of perpetual license support as another reason to evaluate other options. The research shows that cost remains the leading driver of virtualization roadmap decisions, with nearly three-quarters of respondents (73%) citing cost savings as a top priority. At the same time, organizations reported significant barriers to progress, including operational complexity (40%), multi-vendor management challenges (38%), securing the increased attack surface (37%) and team skills requirements (37%). These findings suggest that while organizations are actively pursuing change, they are also looking for ways to reduce risk and avoid unnecessary disruption. IT Leaders Choose Multiple and Hybrid Hypervisor Models for Greater Control and More Flexibility Key Findings: 60% are considering a multiple-hypervisor strategy, reflecting growing interest in more flexible, mixed environments that support both operational and financial goals. In addition, 47% are favoring a hybrid IT virtualization environment consisting of hypervisors and containers for ‘best of both worlds’ workload placement. The findings also suggest that many organizations are considering a range of options beyond VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). Nearly half of respondents (48%) said they do not currently plan to move any of their assets to VCF, indicating that many enterprises are taking a more measured approach and prioritizing strategies that align with their business needs, existing investments and operating models. The trend shows increasing diversification in enterprise virtualization strategies with a longer-term transition toward bespoke, multi-platform IT virtualization environments. As organizations reevaluate their paths to modernization, they are increasingly adopting approaches that combine on-premises infrastructure, private cloud, public cloud and alternative hypervisors to support workload flexibility, operational efficiency and better cost control.

‘MIXED FEELINGS’ Meta unveils new ‘open’ AI model to rival Chinese competition
SAN FRANCISCO—Meta on Thursday launched a new openweight AI model which it claims rivals, and in some cases outperforms, similar products from leading Chinese developers. Muse Spark Open “is the most capable US open-weight model to date,” Meta’s chief of AI Alexandr Wang wrote on X. Unlike with so-called closed models -- such as Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s ChatGPT -- developers can download the parameters, or weights, of an open-weight model and then customize it. Chinese developers have emerged as dominant players in the openweight market for AI models over the past couple of years. Alibaba’s Qwen, Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and Z.ai’s GLM models have been considered open-weight frontrunners globally, but Meta claims its new open model now competes on a similar level. “Built for coding and agentic work,” Muse Spark Open “excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multistep reasoning,” Meta said in a blogpost, adding that “strong safeguards” have been integrated into the new model. Muse Spark Open is also “optimized” to run on Apple’s advanced M5 Ultra chips, Meta said, signaling an unusual partnership between the two tech giants. Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg wrote on X that the new model “runs great on new Mac Studios thanks to work” with Apple and its new CEO John Ternus. Ternus, who took over as Apple’s chief from Tim Cook in September, responded that it is “amazing to run a model of Muse Spark Open’s caliber and scale this efficiently, right from your desk. Mac Studio keeps pushing the boundaries of on-device AI!” Muse Spark Open still requires significant computing power, though. Users can run the model on two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips to create a “supercomputer” on their own desktop, Meta said. The launch comes just days after Meta announced its newest closed model. On Monday, the company unveiled two new “frontier” models called Wonder and Wonder Full, which the company claimed rival the most advanced versions of ChatGPT and Claude. Meta’s AI efforts were initially focused on open models, but more recently Zuckerberg has pushed the company to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic. Meta launched its Spark model in April, marking a departure from its open-source model known as Llama, which lagged behind the rest of the industry. AFP
AI cracks centuries-old ciphers
T
OKYO—Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the wartime missive written in code, creating a puzzle that went unsolved for more than 200 years —until AI cracked it in a matter of hours. Artificial intelligence is helping non-specialists unlock the secrets of historical sources, a trend described as a “turning point” in a field previously the preserve of scholars and dedicated hobbyists. One new sleuth is Carter Church, a 27-year-old AI engineer who decrypted a 19th-century letter to one of Napoleon’s generals. Without digital tools, the task could have taken weeks, but the latest model from ChatGPT-maker OpenAI broke the cipher in just six hours. “What AI mostly brings is persistence,” Church told AFP, saying he felt “an unbelievable sense of satisfaction and excitement when I saw the result”. The message from 1809 -- detailing French and allied troops’ positions in two dozen lines of symbols, numbers and letters -- had lain ignored in an online academic archive. Because traditional, low-tech methods to crack ciphers are effective but time- and labour-intensive, historians “have more important problems to solve, so many ciphers like this often sit unattended”, said Church. To find the solution, Church, who works at US cybersecurity firm SentinelOne, needed to learn “very little” about code-breaking techniques or the historical period. He spent some evenings going over it, then consulted Japanese patent engineer Satoshi Tomokiyo, who maintains an online list of unsolved ciphers, to verify it. “2026 will be remembered as a turning point for codebreaking of historical ciphers,” Tomokiyo wrote on his website Cryptiana, a go-to resource for the small but enthusiastic global community of amateur cryptographers. ‘Mixed feelings’ Researchers were already developing AI models to break ciphers, but the public release of state-ofthe-art generalist tools has unleashed dozens of new solutions. Although Church used OpenAI’s most powerful model, GPT-6 Astra, other people have used

top offerings from rival US lab Anthropic instead. Tomokiyo said that since mid-September, most of the ciphers on his list have been cracked using AI. “There remain some tough problems” which could stay an enigma for years to come, because there is less relevant data available to help AI figure them out, the 58-year-old told AFP. “I’m excited long-time problems are now solved, but on the other hand, I have mixed feelings, because AI seems to have solved these difficult problems so easily,” he said. With technology draining the satisfaction of being first to crack a cipher, a fellow code-breaker told Tomokiyo: “I feel useless.” AI is surpassing human abilities in pursuits from mathematics to computer programming, while threatening to alter or even eradicate many jobs. The technology is transforming the work of historians not only by decoding documents, but also by analysing millions of medieval manuscripts or helping read ancient scrolls. Too fragile to be unrolled without risking destruction, the Herculaneum Papyri -- hundreds of papyrus scrolls
carbonised in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD -- are now being X-rayed and analysed by AI to reveal the hidden writing inside. Researchers in Italy announced in June the first complete virtual unrolling of a scroll, which turned out to be a treatise on ethics. ‘Facebook of the past’ AI is also being used to build a huge, searchable collection of previously inaccessible sources on Jewish history and culture by transcribing 10 million pages of Hebrew manuscripts. “It’s gigantic. No human being could process such a quantity” of data, said project leader Daniel Stoekl Ben Ezra, of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris. Researchers hope the databases created using the digitised text -- which he likens to a kind of “huge Facebook of the past” -- could help bring to light links between people, places and ideas. And at the French capital’s Notre Dame Cathedral, an AI system has been trained to transcribe 14,600 Latin pages from the church’s medieval archives -- a task not dissimilar to code-breaking. AFP
Philippines’ AI adoption jumps 52% in a year
Precious Lim, Country Manager, Philippines, Amazon Web Services
ARTIFICIAL intelligence (AI) adoption in the Philippines continues to accelerate, with 32% of businesses, or over 396,000 businesses, now using AI, up from 21% a year ago. These findings are from Unlocking the Philippines’ AI Potential 2026, an independent study conducted by research firm Strand Partners and commissioned by Amazon Web Services (AWS). This represents 52% year-on-year growth in adoption, ahead of the 50% growth recorded last year. The research is based on a survey of 1,000 Philippine business leaders and 1,000 nationally representative members of the public. Businesses are already reporting that AI is creating value. 74% report productivity gains, up from 70% last year, while 68% say AI has increased their revenue, up from 64%. These businesses report average revenue growth of 20%, ahead of the 15%
they forecast a year ago. Confidence in AI’s impact in years to come is also high. 83% of adopters expect AI to drive business growth over the next year, while 84% of businesses believe the technology will significantly transform their industry within five years. Yet, AI adoption remains concentrated in pilots and basic use cases. The next step for the Philippines is to move from adoption to advanced use of AI with scaled deployment across core functions, while preparing for emerging technologies such as agentic AI. Precious Lim, Country Manager, Philippines, Amazon Web Services, said: “Philippines businesses are optimistic in the potential value AI can drive, and have moved to adopt the technology. AI is still developing, with next generation technologies like AI agents and physical AI promising to change the way we work. The next opportunity will require collaboration between the public and private sector to help businesses move from simply
adopting AI, to driving impact.” AI adoption is broadening; transformation must be spread out among all organizations The nature of AI adoption in the Philippines is becoming more sophisticated. 70% of AI adopters remain focused on basic uses such as publicly available chatbots, routine productivity applications and ready-made AI solutions, down from 78% in 2025. A further 18% have reached the intermediate stage, integrating AI across multiple functions to improve efficiency and customer experiences. 12% have reached the most advanced stage, using combinations of models, custom AI systems, agentic AI or autonomous technologies, up from 8% last year. Ambition remains high: 79% expect their use of AI to increase over the next 12 months, and 47% believe significant untapped AI potential remains within their organization. With 49% of business using cloud technologies, they have a suitable environment to scale successful AI applications up.
The Carrier Home Design Studio reimagines comfort for modern living WHEN planning a home renovation, homeowners often look to designers, architects, and online sources for inspiration. But bringing that vision to life takes more intentional planning, from the layout of the home to the interiors and elements that shape how the family uses and experiences the space every day. Carrier, the authority in air solutions, made inspiration a tangible experience when it opened the doors of its three-day pop-up, the Carrier Home Design Studio, at Uptown Mall, BGC. The event invited homeowners and designers to reimagine modern living and cooling with the brand’s floor-standing aircon, Carrier Slim. “Times have changed, and people now beautify their houses. They want their appliances in there to match. The 4HP was introduced about a year and a half ago. Today, listening to consumers, they said, ‘I like to put it in my condominium or a small part of my house. Does it come in different capacities?’ Hence, we launched 2.5HP and 3HP,” shared Philip Trapaga, President of Carrier Concepcion Airconditioning Company (CCAC). “That is our commitment to the Filipino community, who need ef-
ficiency, technical expertise, and durability. Carrier is here for you.” At the launch program of the Carrier Home Design Studio, TV Host of Metro Home and Senior Partner at ADesign, Anton Barretto, and interior stylist, Marilen Montenegro, joined a fireside chat to share their perspectives on the design trends shaping homes today, how to bring comfort into the home without compromising its overall design, and why air conditioning should be considered early in the design process. According to Montenegro, “Home design is becoming more about creating spaces that are not only beautiful, but also intentional and responsive to how families actually live. We’re seeing many homeowners today wanting to incorporate wellness and dedicated spaces for wellness into their homes.” Barretto echoed this, particularly as more homeowners today are gravitating toward more open layouts. “Homeowners prefer open plan layouts with provisions to close them off so spaces can be flexible. They can transform into separate areas or open up into one

big space as needed, depending on how the intended use for the day.” With these evolving needs, both experts emphasized the importance of thinking through every element of a space early in the design process, including air conditioning. “For me, it needs to be considered as early as planning the walls of
your house,” Barretto shared. “Because when you think of the aircon and where you’ll place it, it follows that you think about piping, compressors, and electrical layout.” Montenegro added that it’s important to consider the physical characteristics and intended use of the space that will be cooled. “You have
to think about things like the ceiling height of the space, how many square meters it is, and from there, how much horsepower would then be needed to cool it,” she advised. Designed to Fit the Way Modern Families Live At the pop-up, guests explored how Carrier Slim can complement different spaces through two interactive room setups that they could walk into and experience the product in a home setting. These rooms were furnished with pieces from contemporary lifestyle brand Fashion Interiors, showcasing how comfort can be integrated seamlessly into thoughtfully designed spaces. An accompanying gallery offered guests an additional look at the Carrier Slim and its design-forward features. Each room featured the Carrier Slim, showing how its vertical design can make better use of floor space while keeping walls open and without disrupting a clean, contemporary layout. The rooms also demonstrated how it delivers quiet yet powerful, and even cooling, distributed through its 3D Airflow while avoiding direct drafts for more comfortable cooling with Breeze Away.

Twelve ordinary lives, one journey of skin transformation in ‘Kutis Reveal’ on BNC
T
WELVE Filipinos are sharing their skin concerns and personal struggles as Kutis Reveal, billed as the Philippines’ first skintransformation reality series of its kind, premieres today, Oct. 17. Hosted by celebrity dermatologist Dr. Kei George Rebolledo, founder of Kutis By Kei, the 13-episode series airs at 10 a.m. on Bilyonaryo News Channel (Channel 31), with new episodes every Saturday. The show follows 12 participants through a four-month journey of dermatological consultations, treatments, healing, and transformation. They were chosen from more than 100 hopefuls who auditioned for the program. Coming from different walks of life, the participants include a cancer survivor, a nurse, a breadwinner working in logistics, an aspiring actress, an LGBT advocate, and a student. Their skin concerns range from melasma and acne scars to psoriasis, scarring, and pigmentation. Each brings a personal story shaped by the challenges of living with a visible skin condition, along with the hope of improving their skin health and regaining confidence. Their treatment plans feature dermatological procedures and technologies, including LDM by Elogio, Rejuran, Blaumann Laser, Sylfirm X, CurJet, and Lenisna. Treatments are tailored to each participant’s individual condition and needs.

Rather than simply showcasing before-and-after photographs, Kutis Reveal documents the process behind each transformation, from medical consultations and procedures to recovery and the emotional challenges that come with it. “We wanted to tell stories that people can relate to while showing that every person has a different journey,” Dr. Kei said. “There’s no instant solution when it comes to skin. What really matters is consistency, trusting the process, and believing that change is possible.” The dermatologist hopes the series will also
encourage greater understanding of people living with visible skin conditions, whose experiences often extend beyond their physical symptoms. “No matter how severe your skin condition is, we want people to know that there is hope,” he said. “No one should feel that they have to hide simply because they don’t feel beautiful. We want them to see that they can take back their confidence and, ultimately, take control of their own story.” For Dr. Kei, the series is an opportunity to bring dermatology beyond the clinic and show the science, patience, and personal commitment behind skin transformation.

“Through the show, I hope viewers experience both the science and the humanity behind every transformation,” he said. “I want them to understand that meaningful results require the right diagnosis, an individualized treatment plan, patience, and trust.” He also hopes audiences will appreciate the courage it takes for the participants to share their stories publicly and recognize that skin conditions need not determine a person’s future. “Their skin condition does not have to define their future,” he said. Kutis Reveal is executive produced by Ivy Ataya, with John Paulo Manat as TV producer and Angela Jed Placino as director.

ROM a first venture into entrepreneurship to running four businesses with around 250 people, Anthony “Ka Tunying” Taberna and his wife, Rossel “Mrs. T” Taberna, celebrated their business journey with the launch of their first-ever open house in Pasig City. The couple hosted TGC FOR BUSINESS 2026: An Open House for Partners & Clients on Oct. 13 at The Metro Tent, gathering entrepreneurs, government officials, corporate clients, industry leaders and prospective business partners to explore opportunities within the Taberna Group of Companies (TGC). Carrying the theme “ONE STEP,” the event showcased the group’s four brands, spanning food service, manufacturing, catering and media production. It also highlighted the founders’
goal of helping other Filipino entrepreneurs establish and grow their own ventures. The Tabernas, who started their businesses as first-generation entrepreneurs in their respective families, developed TGC over more than a decade. Their latest initiative puts all four companies under one roof, allowing potential partners to explore their products, services and business models in a single venue. The open house began with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting led by the couple and invited guests, including Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Ma. Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, Department of Tourism Undersecretary Stanley K. Ng and Pasig City Vice Mayor Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr. Then the founders’ daughter, Zoey Taberna, led a prayer of gratitude. Visitors explored product displays, food tastings, demonstrations and business presentations, while interactive activities and event-day offers encouraged guests to discover the four companies. Representatives were also on hand to discuss potential partnerships in reselling, manufacturing, catering, corporate gifting and event production. Ka Tunying’s, the group’s restaurant and food business, presented its Filipino comfort food, bakery products, corporate gifting services, function packages and holiday offerings. Its Community Partner reseller packages, starting at P25,000, were positioned as an entry point for aspiring food entrepreneurs. Kumbachero Food Corp showcased food manufacturing services, including white-label production, toll manufacturing, bulk supply and reseller arrangements. Its “Create Your Own Food Brand” concept targets entrepreneurs who want to develop food products without immediately investing in their own

Taste of the Town Catering highlighted its services for weddings, corporate functions and social gatherings, alongside gourmet hotbox deliveries, grazing spreads and customized food offerings. Meanwhile, Outbox Media Powerhouse Corp presented its event management and production services, multimedia capabilities, creative direction, artist management and interactive activations, including its Eventverse experience. Together, the four brands offer a range of services for individual consumers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and corporate clients. The group hopes this integrated setup will make it easier for prospective partners to access established products and services as they build their businesses. Apart from the commercial opportunities, the Tabernas emphasized the importance of their growing Communi-T, which comprises approximately 250 people. The group identifies faith, gratitude, integrity, service and care for others as its guiding principles. The couple believes that business growth should extends beyond financial returns. “Our vision includes developing people, supporting livelihoods and creating opportunities for others to succeed alongside us,” Mrs. T said during her opening remarks. The first TGC open house, they hope, will lead to lasting partnerships and encourage more Filipinos to take their own first steps into entrepreneurship.

The new redesigned shopping concept features room-inspired displays that help customers visualize furniture, décor and household essentials in actual home settings
SM Home Cebu gets a homey makeover By Minerva Newman SM Home Cebu is introducing a new way to shop for home essentials with its room-inspired store layout, designed to give shoppers a more realistic homeshopping experience starting this October. During a media tour on Oct. 13, the brand unveiled “Rediscover SM Home,” its biggest transformation to date, replacing the traditional aisle-by-aisle setup with curated spaces modeled after real homes and everyday routines. Shoppers can explore dedicated zones for the kitchen and dining room, living room, bedroom and bathroom, seeing how furniture, décor and household essentials work together. “Rediscover SM Home reimagines the way Filipinos shop for the spaces they live in,” the brand said. “It’s about moving from just buying items to imagining a home.” The new layout helps customers visualize how products can complement one another, whether they are choosing a coffee maker, styling a dining table, creating a cozier bedroom or preparing their homes for guests.
The transformation also expands the shopping experience beyond household necessities, featuring brands and products designed to elevate everyday living. The launch comes ahead of the holiday season. On Oct. 9, SM Home unveiled its Christmas 2026 Collection, themed “A Season Called Home.” The collection features festive décor, entertaining essentials and gift ideas, from statement Christmas trees to tableware suited for family gatherings and Noche Buena celebrations. The brand aims to help Filipino families create holiday traditions that reflect their personal style and bring loved ones together. “For Cebu, this marks another chapter in the Rediscover SM Home story,” the brand added. “A chance to look again, discover something new, and prepare for a season that brings people closer.” SM Home has 78 branches nationwide, offering furniture, décor, appliances and lifestyle products under its “For All Things Home” philosophy. The Rediscover SM Home concept is also scheduled to roll out at its flagship store in SM Makati before the year ends.
KNOWLEDGE Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) and BPI Foundation (BPIF) have joined forces to improve classroom learning and promote financial literacy among students in the Visayas and Mindanao. Throughout September, the organizations distributed Knowledge Channel television sets and educational materials to schools in Isabela City, Basilan; Zamboanga City; Guimaras; and Iloilo City through BPIF’s FinEd Unboxed program. Each recipient school received a learning package featuring a 55inch smart TV equipped with the Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library (KCPML), which contains more than 1,500 curriculum-aligned video lessons. The resources are designed to support interactive learning across grade levels and integrate multimedia content into everyday classroom activities. The partnership also introduced new episodes of Estudyantipid, an original educational series that teaches young learners practical financial skills through relatable situations and everyday money lessons. KCFI vice president Edric Calma thanked BPIF for supporting the foundation’s efforts to make educational multimedia resources more accessible to Filipino students.

Jana Agoncillo, who plays Diane in the show, helps make lessons on saving, spending, and responsible money habits relatable to students
“Through our partnership with the BPI Foundation, we are building on that legacy. The turnover of the Knowledge Channel TV does not merely provide access to our curriculum-based video lessons, but is an investment in the future for every learner who will benefit from curriculum-aligned video lessons, all developed to make learning more engaging and fun, more interactive and constructive, and more effective and relevant,” Calma said.
BPIF trustee Mary Catherine Elizabeth Santamaria emphasized the importance of financial education in preparing young Filipinos for the future. “At BPI, we believe that financial education is a powerful tool for empowerment. By helping young Filipinos develop practical money skills early, we can help build a generation that is more responsible, resilient, and prepared for the future,” Santamaria said. The partnership between Knowledge Channel and BPI Foundation expands access to multimedia learning tools and financial literacy resources to schools across the Visayas and Mindanao
