Romualdez is ready to face any complaint the Office of the Ombudsman may file against him in connection with the flood control scam, his legal counsel, Ade Fajardo, said Sunday.
Fajardo maintained there is no evidence against his client.
“Former Speaker Romualdez is prepared to face the process. However, there is absolutely no proof or evidence linking him to the flood-control anomalies. There is no preliminary investigation yet; the matter is currently in the case build-up stage,” he said. He said the former House leader had no participation in flood control project funding and implementation.
“It’s actually very simple. If you didn't participate, you can naturally expect that there wouldn't be any evidence,” Fajardo said.
Romualdez earlier squarely denied the allegations against him, adding that he will not be a scapegoat in the flood control controversy.

ity Leader Alan Peter Cayetano' brother Lino weighed in on allegations of "ghost projects" in Taguig City and asked the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to include these in its hearings as it resumes its probe into anomalous flood control projects on July 27.
Blue Ribbon chairman Senator Erwin Tulfo said the committee would invite People's Television Network president Lino Cayetano after the latter sought an investigation into Taguig flood control projects undertaken from 2022 to 2025.
"Senator Cayetano is now in a more difficult position because there are allegations involving flood control projects in Taguig. His younger brother is willing to testify," Tulfo said.
"He should probably prepare for that because it is his own brother who is calling for an investigation," Tulfo added.
Senator Cayetano on Sunday denied the allegations of ghost projects in his
hometown.
"There are no ghost projects in Taguig, and if you can show any, someone will be held accountable," Cayetano said, adding that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) should visually document flood control projects nationwide.
Gathering witnesses
Senator Panfilo Lacson, for his part, said he is gathering informants and witnesses who could provide evidence against Senator Cayetano after the latter questioned the increase in the senator's declared wealth and accused him of compromising his integrity.

Exorcism center trains priests all across Asia
ASIA’S only dedicated exorcism center, designed to train priests from the Philippines and across the region, sits just off a busy thoroughfare in Metro Manila.
The Michael Center for Spiritual Liberation and Exorcism, which marks its fifth month this week, was built because “cases were piling up,” Father Jose Francisco Syquia told AFP. The facility also serves as a training center for exorcists, with priests from Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and India already seeking instruction.
Syquia said trauma from bullying, sexual abuse and family separation has contributed to a rise in people seeking spiritual intervention. The center works with psychologists, psychiatrists and neurologists to distinguish mental illness from cases believed to require exorcism.

On July 15, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., the CIDG Pangasinan Provincial Field Unit, together with representatives of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Pangasinan and in coordination with the Dagupan City Police Station, conducted a law enforcement operation for an alleged violation of Republic Act No. 7394, or the Consumer Act of the Philippines, at a warehouse in Barangay Tebeng, Dagupan City. The operation resulted in the confiscation of 180 alleged substandard automotive batteries valued at about P700,000 and the arrest of two suspects.
CIDG director Major General Robert Alexander Morico II identified the suspects only as “Isa,” the female owner of the warehouse, and “Al,” a male warehouse employee. Both were allegedly found possessing and selling imported automotive batteries from India that were uncertified and non-conforming, exposing consumers to potential safety risks in violation of the Consumer Act. Morico emphasized that it is the State’s policy to protect consumers, promote their welfare, and ensure that only safe, quality and compliant products are sold in the market. The DTI strictly enforces safety standards to protect consumers from hazardous products. Authorities said uncertified and non-conforming automotive batteries pose serious risks, including vehicle failure and potential physical harm, because they bypass quality control and lack official certification.

NHA extends P32-m aid to Cebu typhoon victims
THE National Housing Authority has distributed nearly P32 million worth of financial aid to 3,195 families in the cities of Talisay and Danao pursuant to its continuing relief efforts for the victims of typhoon “Odette” in Cebu province.
Addressing the beneficiaries, NHA general manager Joeben Tai expressed hopes that the agency’s Emergency Housing Assistance Program (EHAP) cash aid may somehow ease their recovery and home repair expenses after the typhoon.
“With the directive of our President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., you can expect that the NHA will continue its efforts to provide financial assistance to every family affected by disasters and calamities so that everyone can have a safe and comfortable life, as well as the opportunity to recover and start over,” Tai said.
NHA Region 7 manager Hermes Jude Juntillo and Cebu district officer in charge Dante Estrobo reported that each family received P10,000 in cash assistance under the EHAP.

PNP nabs 2 suspects, seizes P39.4-m drugs
THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday announced the arrest of two high-value individuals (HVIs) in Mindanao and the confiscation of some P39.4 million worth of illegal drugs. In a news release, the PNP said P35.8 million worth of illegal drugs were seized at the Pasay City mail hub on July 17 and 18. Authorities intercepted 20 inbound parcels containing approximately 4,298 grams of suspected shabu valued at P29.2 million; approximately 4,385 grams of suspected marijuana kush worth P6.5 million and suspected cocaine. The suspects were arrested in General Santos and Cagayan de Oro cities, resulting in the confiscation of suspected shabu worth P1.5 million and P2.04 million, respectively.
Comelec chairman George Garcia said the classification was based on the areas’ history of election-related violence. but does not necessarily mean there are current security threats.
“The 27 areas were classified because of incidents in previous elections. We are closely monitoring them, but these are not necessarily related to any ongoing disturbances,” Garcia said.
The red-category areas included Al-Barka in Basilan; 21 municipalities in Lanao del Sur;
Datu Odin Sinsuat in Maguindanao del Norte; Pandag, Shariff Aguak and Shariff Saydona Mustapha in Maguindanao del Sur; and Tugunan in the Special Geographic Area. Comelec also placed 27 areas under the “orange” category, indicating the possibility of election-related disturbances despite no history of such incidents during previous elections.
Garcia said the poll body, together with security agencies, will review the classifications weekly.
He also clarified that the recent fatal shooting of a municipal councilor in Midsayap, Cotabato, and the grenade blast in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, were not election-related based on initial investigations.
Garcia said Comelec is now 90-percent ready for the BARMM parliamentary polls, with the printing of about 2.3 million ballots expected to be completed on Sunday before undergoing a two-week verification process.
ADMU develops playing cards featuring local herbs

from the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) have developed and published a card game inspired by Filipino herbal medicines and the albularyo (village medicine man) tradition, in the May 2026 issue of the Journal of Chemical Education.
The study and the card game dubbed “Herbolaryo” was authored and created by Maryjane Magsino, Inah Marie Q. Rivera, Armando Guidote, and Genejane Adarlo, all from the ADMU Department of Chemistry and Health Sciences Program.
According to the article, traditional
medicine is a fundamental part of the health care of the world’s population, thus the interest in incorporating traditional medicine into modern science.
“Researchers worldwide have used advanced analytical chemistry and pharmacological methods to isolate biologically active compounds, elucidate their mechanisms, and validate the therapeutic claims of traditional remedies, such as medicinal herbs,” it said.
The game consisting of 86 cards, with 12 sickness cards and 74 action cards allows up to four players to each assume the role of the albularyo to cure local versions of illnesses like binat (relapse), and sumpa (curse) using medicinal herbs
such as tawa-tawa, bayabas, luyang dilaw, and sambong among others.
One game can last from five to ten minutes where the albularyo must combine chemical compounds and match it with the illness it aims to cure.
The researchers piloted the card game with Grade 8 students, third-year chemistry students, and fourth-year health sciences students to evaluate its potential as an alternative tool for teaching chemistry.
The researchers said Herbularyo demonstrated promise as an alternative way to educate students on organic chemistry by embedding Science in the culturally significant context of traditional Filipino herbalism.

Filipinos in Kuwait told to stay safe amid rising tension

THE Philippine Embassy in Kuwait on Saturday urged Filipinos community to stay alert and follow the guidance of Kuwaiti authorities amid increasing regional tensions.
The embassy also advised monitoring official updates and avoiding the spread of unverified information.
In a statement, the embassy recommended Filipinos to limit non-essential travel and outdoor activities, emphasizing the importance of restricting movements to necessary trips only.
“Filipinos in Kuwait are advised to continue exercising vigilance and situational awareness. Please follow the advice and instructions of the concerned Kuwaiti authorities. ABOARD FLIGHT PR 104 – At 37,000 feet, suspended above the vast, glittering blue of the vast Pacific, the mind naturally drifts across time and ocean.
We are en route to the mainland to witness the third anniversary of the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Southern Colorado, an organization where our daughter, Harmony, serves as founding president and CEO.
There is insightful, quiet poetry in crossing the Pacific. As the aircraft glides above the endless blue toward Hawaii, our mind drifts to the sugar and pineapple fields of Waipahu, where our father once toiled in the early 20th century.
Decades later, that same ocean of opportunity carries his granddaughter, Harmony, as she leads a growing community into a future her ancestors from northern Philippines could only imagine.
Looking down toward the Hawaiian archipelago,we are overwhelmed by the pull of history. It was in the sugar cane and pineapple plantations of Waipahu that our own old man toiled decades ago – a quiet pioneer who, alongside thousands of sacadas, laid the bedrock for the Filipino diaspora in America.

Out of sync
“THIS is what happens when economic, fiscal and monetary policy are out of sync with each other,” said a highly regarded former finance secretary.
Bangko Sentral Governor Eli Remolona is worried about inflation going higher. Taming inflation, after all, is the BSP’s primordial concern.
Remolona was referring to the “secondround effects” on prices of a recent decision by the Department of Labor and Employment, increasing Metro Manila minimum wage levels by 12%. Six percent might have been manageable, he said. With flourish, the newly minted acting labor secretary, Francis Tolentino, announced what he called a “historic” decision to grant an 85-peso increase in the daily wage level.
The other regions will similarly increase -- by how much, we still do not know. But the labor unions are not content. They say that the increase is not enough to cope with the cost of living.
Asked whether the record wage hike was politically motivated or if the wage boards had calculated the numbers, Remolona declined to comment on the boards’ process.
“I do not know. I wasn’t there.”

Some have already closed down due to the onslaught of cost-push inflation, from petrol to power to rent to logistics to practically every cost component, squeezing out already marginal profits.
A businessman has complained to our chat group about having to pay almost 25 pesos per kilowatt hour for his commercial establishment, when it was just 15 pesos before.
That businessman is wealthy enough, but what about the neighborhood baker, the restaurant owners, practically every other establishment other than Smith and Wollensky or Morton’s or Laduree which can just charge higher costs to the very rich?
Despicable depiction
ON July 10, the news organization China Daily released an editorial video cartoon depicting Filipinos as monkeys. The monkey was clad in a barong Tagalog and salakot. It was being instructed by arms depicting Japan and the United States. It was later on thrown into the sea by a water cannon from a China Coast Guard ship.
This came just two days before the tenth anniversary of the Philippines’ legal victory in the Permanent Court of Arbitration that recognized our sovereign rights in pertinent parts of the South China Sea. Specifically, the arbitral body ruled that China’s claims of a nine-dash line had neither historical nor legal basis.
Despite the definitive ruling, and despite the support of numerous countries, the Philippines continues to be on the receiving end not only of China’s illegal assertions, but of insult and ridicule that are signs of an organized, targeted disinformation campaign.
The Executive Department was quick to react to the video cartoon. “The Philippines demands that the offensive material be taken down, calls for the immediate cessation of such irresponsible content and urges China to uphold dignity, respect and truth in public discourse,” said the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The DFA has filed a diplomatic protest over the racist depiction. It said China Daily went beyond legitimate political debate.
The Department of National Defense said the cartoon is “a revealing insight into what the Chinese communist apparatus
thinks of the Filipino people,” said Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, Jr. “This mockery of the lawful 2016 Arbitral Award and the video’s glorification of violence against the Filipino people and soldiers expose the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of China’s propaganda machine,” he added.

THE Philippines’ elevation to upper-middleincome country (UMIC) status marks an important milestone in our economic journey. More than recognition of sustained growth, it signals the country’s transition to a stage of development where competitiveness will increasingly depend less on low-cost labor and consumption-driven expansion and more on productivity, innovation, and human capital.
The reclassification opens significant opportunities. It strengthens investor confidence, enhances the country’s standing in global markets, and positions the Philippines to attract higher-value industries in technology, advanced manufacturing, and knowledgebased services. Yet these opportunities will not materialize on their own. They require deliberate investments that prepare Filipinos to compete in an increasingly digital and AIdriven economy.
The foundations, however, are already being laid. Government reforms and sustained private-sector investments have steadily strengthened the country’s digital infrastructure. Fiber networks continue to expand, 5G coverage has widened, satellite connectivity is reaching underserved communities, while data centers and AI-ready facilities are laying the foundation for the next wave of digital growth. The President’s recent commendation of Globe Telecom’s launch of Starlink Direct-to-Cell service and its continuing network investments, together with DICT Secretary Henry Aguda’s observation that these efforts are bringing the country closer to near-universal internet access, highlights the steady progress toward an inclusive digital economy.
These developments underscore how telecommunications has evolved far beyond providing voice and internet services. Digital networks now support e-commerce, financial technology, cloud computing, digital government, and artificial intelligence. In an uppermiddle-income economy, connectivity is no longer simply about access. It is a strategic asset that enables productivity, innovation, and economic participation.
It is not that employers want to oppress their laborers. They are simply unable to cope with additional costs when consumer demand is low, and practically everyone except nepo-babies and the filthy rich are buying.
Even Jollibee has increased prices, while serving smaller portions, or so a friend attests. No more blow-outs for middle-class family milestones, as housewives wonder how to pay Meralco’s electricity bills, which have gone way, way up. I pray our soft-spoken Bangko Sentral governor can cope with the stress of balancing monetary policy to prevent the economy from imploding.

But not to worry, our peripatetic president assures the people. Because he “feels” for them, and “cares” for them, he recently announced that he will hand

They are the avowed supporters and apologists of the previous administration, under which our arbitral victory was played down and which adopted a policy of appeasement with China despite its brazen incursions into our maritime space. Fragmented politics is par for the course in the life of our nation. We see this every day, and especially now during the impeachment trial of the vice president. Day-to-day conduct of many government leaders is often determined by their political color. They could rail against corruption when it is their adversary being accused, but fall silent when it is one of their own who is being investigated. They will fabricate stories about their opponents just to confound the people who can no longer tell what is true or not.
One wonders, however, why an issue such as Philippine sovereignty could still not bring politicians on the same page. While others decry China’s actions, some continue to enable it, whether by outright pronouncements or by deafening silence. We cannot imagine why anyone would be opposed or apathetic to our efforts to fight another country’s menacing acts. If there is one concern that should bind us, it should be this, because we are all Filipinos. Without a solid front, other countries will continue to take advantage of our divisions to further sow discord. They will see great openings to introduce their own narratives, or twist the facts, or pit Filipinos against each other. This is a vile campaign that will drive even deeper wedges not only in our own identity but in our ability to protect and defend ourselves.
Sustaining the UMIC momentum
National policy already recognizes this connection. The Philippine Development Plan identifies digital transformation and education as complementary pillars of national development, while the Strategic Investment Priority Plan encourages investments that strengthen digital education.
The challenge now is execution. Policies are in place; they must translate into classrooms where technology improves learning and into communities where connectivity creates economic opportunities.
Technology is only as effective as the people using it.
But infrastructure alone will not determine whether the Philippines fully realizes the promise of UMIC status.
As CitizenWatch Philippines Co-Convenor Atty. Kit Belmonte aptly observed, “Government and industry have moved with real intent on infrastructure—fiber, 5G, data centers, AI-ready networks. That progress deserves recognition. The opportunity now is to bring education reform into that same rhythm, so the investment in connectivity and the investment in learning are advancing together rather than on separate timelines.”
That is precisely where the country’s next test begins.
Building networks without building digital skills limits the return on infrastructure investments. Providing connectivity without equipping teachers and students to use digital technologies effectively leaves much of their potential untapped. A competitive digital economy requires not only modern infrastructure but also a workforce capable of creating value through technology. Artificial intelligence demonstrates this point. Much of today’s discussion focuses on teaching AI as a subject. Equally important is

The select senior citizens queue for hours from dawn to buy 20-peso rice, even as NFA claims to start buying palay at 21 pesos per kilo of wet palay. That means 35 pesos base
using AI to improve how students learn. Personalized instruction, adaptive assessments, intelligent tutoring systems, and AI-assisted teaching are already practical tools that can help teachers address different learning needs while improving classroom outcomes. Technology, however, is only as effective as the people using it. Teachers need continuous professional development to integrate digital tools confidently into instruction. Schools require reliable devices and connectivity that extend beyond pilot projects. Curricula must evolve alongside technological change while preserving strong foundations in critical thinking, communication, mathematics, and science. These are areas where government, educational institutions, telecommunications providers, and the technology sector should work as partners rather than in silos. The same collaboration is needed to close the country’s remaining connectivity gaps. While internet access has expanded significantly, last-mile deployment still encounters delays in permitting and local coordination. Addressing these bottlenecks is not simply about improving infrastructure. It is about ensuring that students, entrepreneurs, and communities outside major urban centers have the same opportunity to participate in the digital economy as those in our largest cities.
Reaching upper-middle-income status has given the country valuable momentum. Sustaining that momentum now requires matching investments in digital infrastructure, education, and human capability. Competitiveness is ultimately measured not by the sophistication of our networks, but by what Filipinos are able to achieve because those networks exist. The real dividends of digital infrastructure are a better educated and highly skilled workforce, more innovative enterprises, and greater opportunities for every Filipino to prosper. By aligning connectivity with education reform, the country’s next leap forward can be driven not only by stronger digital infrastructure, but by a generation equipped to turn opportunity into sustained and inclusive national progress.

Boat sinking survivors rescued after days at sea
JAKARTA – Five survivors from a passenger boat that sank off eastern Indonesia, including a seven-year-old girl, have been rescued after floating at sea for three days, a rescue official said on Sunday.
The vessel, which was carrying more than 70 people, sank on Wednesday as it sailed near Selayar, a small island south of the larger Sulawesi.
Survivors told rescuers they had been part of a group of 25 people earlier reported as missing before becoming separated from the others by heavy winds.
“After the ship sank, each of them saved themselves using whatever equipment or makeshift flotation they could find,” local search-and-rescue official Muhammad Arif Anwar told AFP.

influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested Saturday in Miami, the US Marshals Service told AFP, as Britain seeks their extradition to face new charges of rape, sex trafficking and assault.
Marshals confirmed the arrest of 39-year-old Andrew Tate, a self-professed misogynist, and his younger brother, but said that because the arrest warrant was sealed, “we are not able to disclose the charges.”
US news outlet TMZ posted video of law enforcement officers placing the men in handcuffs and escorting them into waiting vehicles. Asked by an onlooker if he had something to say, Tristan Tate did not respond, the footage posted on X showed.
The UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said in a statement that the Tates, who face charges in Britain, were arrested by US marshals. UK prosecutors will be seeking the brothers’ extradition. AFP
Woman dies week after bar fire, raising toll to 34
BANGKOK – A 20-year-old woman died Sunday of injuries sustained in a huge Bangkok bar fire one week ago, health authorities said, bringing the death toll from the blaze to 34.
The devastating fire tore through the popular Rong Beer Na Lad Phrao bar and restaurant on the night of July 12, rapidly engulfing the live music venue.
Most of the victims died from smoke inhalation, police told AFP last week, while others died in hospital from severe burn injuries.
Investigators were examining the cause of the fire and why it was so deadly, with many of the victims’ bodies found by the toilets and officials questioning whether fire exits were obstructed.
A building safety expert told AFP earlier that Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao appeared to have lacked the safety systems required for the large crowds and live music events it hosted. AFP
US launches strikes to ‘punish’ Iran after troops killed in Jordan
TEHRAN – The United States said airstrikes on Sunday aimed to “punish” Iran over the first US military deaths since renewed hostilities with the Islamic republic.
Iran rapidly announced its own retaliation, saying two US bases in Kuwait were targeted in response to more than a week of intensifying attacks -- which Tehran said included strikes on an airport, a railway station and bridges.
A preliminary deal aimed at ending the war has collapsed as the foes fight to break the deadlock over the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway key to the world’s oil supply.
The Iranian army announced on Sunday it targeted two US bases in Kuwait with drones, hitting an ammunition depot at Camp Udairi and Patriot radar and air surveillance systems at the Ali Al Salem Air Base.
Tehran had also launched fresh strikes in Jordan, where the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said two service members were killed Friday as they “defended against
Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.”
It said another service member was still missing in action.
Those deaths brought to 16 the confirmed number of US military fatalities since US-Israeli strikes started the war on February 28.
The US military said that it carried out an eighth consecutive night of strikes against Iran, with targets including units behind the attack that killed two American troops in Jordan.
The attacks aimed to “swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan
last night,” said US Central Command. The Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim simultaneously reported US attacks on Sirik, a port located on the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran. Iranian supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who took over from his father after he was killed in the opening salvo of US-Israeli strikes, vowed to teach the Americans an “unforgettable lesson,” in a statement carried by state TV.
Major General Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military adviser to Khamenei, warned that Tehran would resume “full-scale offensive operations” if US strikes continued in the coming days. AFP

GAZA CITY – Gaza’s civil defense and hospitals said Israeli attacks on Saturday killed 11 people across the territory, among them three children and their parents.
A ceasefire remains in place between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas, but it has not halted the violence in Gaza, and efforts to secure a lasting agreement to end the war have stalled.
A family of five – three children and their parents – were killed when an Israeli strike hit a residential apartment in northwest Gaza City, according to the territory’s civil defense agency, which operates as a rescue service under Hamas.
“The family’s only surviving member is one child, who was not inside the
house at the time of the strike,” Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the agency, told AFP.
Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital confirmed it had received the five bodies.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said a strike had been carried out in Gaza City on Saturday “targeting a Hamas terrorist.”
She said the military was still assessing the results.
Gaza resident Mousa Al-Aimawi said the strike came without warning.
“Suddenly there was a missile hitting the building. No one knew, no one, no warning, nothing,” he told AFP.
“They hit it without caring that there are civilians, children, women, girls.”
Mohammed Kali, who lives in the same building, said he saw several people lying on the ground.
“There were bodies scattered on the ground – women and children dead, and elderly people too,” he said. AFP footage from the scene showed large sections of the building’s facade torn away, as rescue teams helped the wounded.
Onlookers picked through shattered concrete blocks and twisted metal, searching for any belongings that could be salvaged.

CARABALLEDA – A weakened cat was pulled from under the rubble of a collapsed residential complex in Venezuela on Saturday in what a rescuer described as a “ray of hope” in the aftermath of deadly earthquakes. More than 5,100 people were killed when back-to-back quakes struck the South American nation on June 24, with the coastal state of La Guaira hit hardest. Volunteer rescue worker Andres Carvajal said he spotted the cat during a search in a
La Guaira housing complex that had been reduced to rubble.
“We saw the cat, it got scared and went back inside, deeper into the building,” Carvajal told AFP. It was unclear when it had become trapped.

Wide adoption of phones running on so-called AI agents would be a revolution, but would also take control away from major apps, which aren’t always happy about it.
At least three firm were showcasing so-called agentic phones at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai this weekend – heralding what may be to come.
Smartphone maker Nubia unveiled its NaviX Ultra, a phone powered by Doubao, China’s massively popular AI chatbot tool run by TikTok creator ByteDance.
“A new era of AI agent smartphones begins,” Nubia said, sharing images of the handsets online.
A limited run of a prototype dubbed the “Doubao Phone” sold out fast in December.
Initially, the prototype could follow simple voice commands to execute tasks across apps, including ordering food and comparing shopping prices. However, days after it was released, tech giants including Alibaba, Tencent and JD.com restricted the built-in assistant’s access to their platforms.
The move effectively disabled the phone’s AI agent, so ByteDance turned off the powerful tool in certain circumstances, including when payments were involved.

THE Philippine financial system’s resources climbed 9.97 percent to P37.64 trillion in May 2026 from P34.22 trillion a year ago on continued growth in banks’ assets and loans, data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas showed. SM Prime allots P1.5b to expand mall in Xiamen
Banks’ resources accounted for P31.29 trillion of the total, up 10.85 percent from P28.23 trillion in the same month last year.
Universal and commercial banks reported a 10.72-percent increase in resources to P29.01 trillion from P26.2 trillion previously. Thrift banks also saw their resources rise 10.95 percent to P1.49 trillion from P1.34 trillion.
Digital banks’ resources surged 45.4 percent to P203.7 billion from P140.1 billion, while rural and cooperative banks maintained 8.06-percent resource growth to P587.0 billion from P543.2 billion.
Non-bank financial institutions maintained their end-December 2025 resource total of P6.35 trillion.
Month-on-month, the financial system’s overall resources grew 0.88 percent from P37.31 trillion in April 2026.
Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. chief economist Michael Ricafort attributed the increase in resources to banks’ doubledigit growth in assets and loans despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
“[This was] amid some hedging and frontloading of purchases funded by bank loans before prices for various products go up further, and also before borrowing costs go up further, as a matter of prudence,” he said in a Viber message.
Ricafort said the continued growth in banks’ deposits and net income also contributed to the overall growth in resources.
“For the coming months, total resources growth could slow down amid possible higher borrowing costs locally and globally, [and] more cautious lending by banks to prevent further increase in bad loans,” Ricafort said.
PAG-IBIG Fund home loan releases grew by double digits in the first half of 2026, with socialized housing financing more than doubling under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Program.
The state-run housing fund released P69.19 billion in total home loans for 43,051 units in the first six months of the year, up 15 percent in amount and 9 percent in units financed from the P60.25 billion released in the same period last year, Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling said.
Socialized home loans extended to minimum wage and low income members reached P6.70 billion from January to June, up 118 percent from a year ago, while the number of units financed climbed 132 percent to 6,601, said Aliling, who also leads the 11-member PagIBIG Fund board of trustees. Socialized housing loans now account for 15 percent of total units financed by the agency.
“Our housing figures for the first half of the year
reflect not just growth, but growth that reaches those who need it most. The sharp rise in socialized housing loans shows that our efforts to prioritize the unserved and underserved sectors, particularly minimum wage and low income Filipinos, are gaining real traction.
This is very much in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to provide our fellow Filipinos with better and dignified lives through the Expanded 4PH,” Aliling said.
To sustain the momentum, Pag-IBIG Fund continues to offer a subsidized 3 percent rate for eligible socialized housing borrowers, while promotional rates of 4.5 percent and 5.75 percent are available for low cost, medium cost and open market housing loans.
The agency has also raised its maximum housing loan amount to P10 million, widening the range of housing options available to members.

SMPH said it is developing the 19,403-square-meter CHAO Block, located below the soon-to-open two office buildings within the SM Xiamen City complex. The development will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. SM Prime’s Xiamen journey: From mall to mixed-use district
studies the future of retail.

Twenty-five years ago, SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPH), the Philippines’ leading property developer, opened its first mall in China, strategically located in Xiamen, a major city in Fujian province. Today, that property has grown into a mixed-use district with shopping malls, office towers, a hotel and lifestyle spaces—a project that has taken shape one phase at a time.
“It took us 25 years to develop the whole property,” SM Prime president Jeffrey Lim said during a media tour. SMPH’s presence in China spans nine shopping malls with more than 1.8 million square meters of gross floor area. Aside from Xiamen, it also operates malls in Haicang, Jinjiang, Tianjin, Chengdu, Chongqing, Suzhou, Yangzhou and Zibo.
Among them, Xiamen has become the company’s largest and most comprehensive development in China.
Beyond malls
The transformation of the Xiamen property began with a large parcel of land that allowed SMPH to think beyond retail.
“When we started this, we were given a huge chunk of land. That’s why the intent really was to build a mixed-use development,” Lim said.
The estate now spans about 12 hectares and includes shopping malls, Grade A office towers, a newly opened hotel and commercial spaces connected to a subway station, making it a transit-oriented development.
The project was developed in phases over more than two decades, gradually expanding from a shopping destination into a district where people can shop, work, dine and stay. Its newest additions are two Grade A office towers completed in 2025. Rising 19 stories each, the buildings house about 160 companies and provide a combined gross leasable area of 116,000 square meters.
Beneath the towers is CHAO Block, a two-level commercial strip that moves away from the traditional enclosed mall format. The area features restaurants, cafés and curated retail spaces designed to keep the property active throughout the day, from breakfast and brunch to evening dining.

Lim said the company previously sent executives to the United States and Europe to observe shopping center trends. In recent years, China has become a more important destination for these learning trips.
“There’s been a lot of advanced development in China, especially the shopping center industry,” Lim said. The company has seen how Chinese developers move beyond traditional retail formats by creating destinations built around experiences, dining and lifestyle. Some concepts and brands discovered in China have eventually reached SM malls in the Philippines. Pop Mart and Miniso are among the brands that expanded through partnerships with SM Group.
“Our shopping malls in the Philippines also benefit from the platform that we have here,” Lim said. He noted that Chinese retail concepts, particularly in food and

The property draws an average of 150,000 visitors on weekdays and as many as 500,000 during weekends and holidays, bringing annual foot traffic to nearly 60 million.
Staying in Fujian
Although provincial governments across China have invited SMPH to explore new investments, the property firm has decided to focus future expansion in Fujian Province.
For SMPH, Fujian holds a special significance because its founder Henry Sy Jr. traces his family origins
to Fujian. The Sy family’s ancestral home is located in Jinjiang, where Sy’s achievements and contributions to the province have been recognized.
“We realized that the SM brand is actually very popular and quite known in the Fujiian area because this is where our founder came from.
That’s what made us decide that moving forward, we will just focus on Fujian Province,” Lim said.
Lessons from China
Beyond expanding its overseas portfolio, China has also become a learning ground for SMPH as it
entertainment, could offer new opportunities for Philippine malls.
The company is also watching China’s rapid development in experiential attractions and lifestyleoriented spaces, which are influencing how malls are designed and operated.

JAMES Reid believes the timing was finally right for his television comeback after spending years away from acting to rediscover himself and rebuild the confidence he needed to return to the screen.
The actor, singer, and music producer admitted he felt immense pressure on the first day of shooting his comeback teleserye, with high expectations surrounding the production.
“There were so many firsts, so many comebacks,” he recalled. “I was super nervous, and I really felt the nerves. I think everybody felt it, not just me.”
The series reunites Reid with primetime television alongside Kathryn Bernardo, who is also returning to doing television series, while Maja Salvador joins the cast, and the director takes on his first television drama.
“So much was riding on that first day,” he shared, recalling the atmosphere on set.
Despite his initial anxiety, Reid credited the cast and crew for helping him settle in.
“Luckily, it’s been a great experience working with Kathryn and Maja and working with our director. They made it such a collaborative, welcoming experience.”
He also thanked Dreamscape Entertainment for welcoming him back.
“Thank you so much for welcoming me back home with such open arms. It feels like I never really left.”
Reid stressed that returning to acting had always been part of his plan.

Curry Barker is on track to become one of the most profitable films of all time, with global revenues surpassing $400 million. After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival last year and opening in May, the film became a word-of-mouth hit over the past two months, particularly among Gen Z horror fans.
Its success has catapulted the 26-year-old Barker from YouTube creator to Hollywood filmmaker with a debut feature that cost just $750,000 to $1 million.
“In terms of the ratio between the worldwide box office and the production budget, Obsession is going to be the biggest success of all time,” Bruce Nash, founder of industry-tracking website The Numbers, told AFP
With about $430 million in ticket sales worldwide, it has already overtaken the 1999 horror hit The Blair Witch Project, which earned around $250 million on a $600,000 budget, according to Nash.
While blockbusters such as Avatar, Frozen, and Titanic made more money overall, they were produced with budgets hundreds of times larger.
The Alabama-born director’s breakout has also eclipsed another horror success this year, Backrooms by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, which has grossed $360 million on a roughly $10 million budget.
Both films rank among the 10 highest-grossing releases of 2026, signaling strong demand for horror and a growing pipeline of social media creators entering filmmaking.

BTS smashes Spotify

K-POP powerhouse BTS has set
another Spotify record after the music video for “Normal” became the platform’s most-streamed K-pop music video within a single day.
The streaming service announced the milestone following the video’s exclusive premiere on July 17. It remained available only on Spotify for its first 48 hours.
Directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Tanu Muiño, the video follows RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook during a late-night party and the quiet morning after.
“It captures what life looks like for the artists when they’re finally out of the spotlight and taking a moment for themselves,” Spotify said in a press release.
“Normal” appears on BTS’ latest album, Arirang, released March 20.
The group is also headlining the “Arirang” world tour, with three Philippine shows scheduled for March 13, 14, and 16, 2027. The concerts will mark BTS’ first performances in the country as a group since its two-night The Wings Tour stop at the Mall of Asia Arena in May 2017.
Asked if he has finally found the answer, he replied, “I think so.” Now in what he described as “a good place,” Reid feels ready to balance the demands of acting once more.
“I’m very happy with everything. I can handle the workload. I can handle everything that comes with it.”
Alongside the teleserye, Reid revealed he is preparing to release a new album, making this one of the busiest periods of his career.
“We’re doing an album soon, so there’s a lot happening. But I’m happy and in a good place.”
The project also reminded him that he is capable of taking on new challenges after years away from television.
“It showed me that I can really do anything that I set my mind to. It gave me a lot of confidence.”
He added that the series represents the beginning of an exciting new phase.
“I’m not just excited for this project. I’m excited to launch into the next year and where this will take me.”
“I had to find myself. Music was an instrument for me to find myself. Who is James Reid outside of acting? That’s what I was trying to figure out.”

AFTER years of focusing on international hosting projects and representing luxury brands at global fashion events, Raymond Gutierrez is returning to Philippine television as one of the newest anchors of Billionaire News Channel’s (BNC) flagship newscast Agenda
“It’s been quite a while. It’s been a long time since I’ve been on local television,” he said during an interview shortly after his contract signing with BNC. “A lot of my hosting projects were coming from Singapore and around Asia and more international stuff.”
Gutierrez was drawn to BNC because of its editorial direction, describing it as a network that extends past traditional news programming.
“This network is not just about entertainment or hard news. It’s an intersection of business, culture, and lifestyle. It approaches a lot of different topics that I’m also very interested in,” he told Manila Standard Entertainment. He added that his family, who regularly watches Agenda, encouraged him to accept the offer.
Despite years of experience in television, Gutierrez admitted he initially felt nervous about joining a live news program.
“Even when I was hosting on TV before, never ko nagawa yung news. So this is really my first time to be in this kind of environment,” he said. He credited veteran broadcasters Pinky Webb and Korina Sanchez f or making the transition easier.
“The environment made me comfortable.
Si Pinky and si Korina also made it very comfortable for me.”
Gutierrez also believes BNC stands
strength in digital. They’re very current, very on top of it when it comes to social media and the digital side of things, which is very important now,” he said.
While his immediate focus is Agenda, Gutierrez confirmed discussions are underway for more projects with the network.
“There are talks. I would like to expand my relationship with Bilyonaryo if the timing is right and if the project is right,” he said, adding that he hopes to contribute creatively should new opportunities arise.
Gutierrez remains one of the Philippines’ most recognizable figures on the international fashion circuit, frequently attending Fashion Weeks in Paris and other global capitals.
He believes Philippine representation in the industry has grown significantly in recent years.
“I think it’s vastly improving. I think the Philippines is showing the world what we’re capable of in terms of fashion,” the 42-year-old Gutierrez said.
While acknowledging that countries like Thailand and South Korea have more established fashion industries, Gutierrez believes Filipinos continue to prove themselves through creativity, storytelling, and digital engagement.
“We’re kind of like the underdog in terms of the fashion industry. But we keep showing them what we’re capable of and what we’re made of.”
Representing the country abroad remains a source of pride for him.
“When I’m in Paris or when I’m in Fashion Week representing a brand, I’m always proud to say I’m from the Philippines.”

Savoring the charm of our culinary capital
HO has been craving the rich, flavorful taste of Kapampangan culinary specialties, wants to be dazzled by the Giant Lantern Festival at Christmastime, or enjoys the attractive offerings of the many lifestyle establishments in the Clark Freeport Zone?
If that’s you, then you should spend more of your leisure time in Pampanga, right at the heart of Central Luzon and only a little less than two hours from the metropolis.
I, for one, find the province an easy getaway every time I feel the burden of the daily rush in the urban jungle. I just drive there, get myself a room at any of the world-class accommodations in Clark, and spend the weekend far from what I see every day in the course of carrying out my office responsibilities.
So anytime I crave what I think is the perfect version of sisig, I drive up there because I learned that Pampanga is the birthplace of this sizzling dish. I guess it’s the way they boil, grill, and chop several parts of the pig, then toss them with onions, chili, and calamansi that makes their version of this dish worth the long drive. There is also the pancit palabok that I occasionally crave: thick rice noodles covered with an attractive orange sauce, dominated by pieces of shrimp, then topped with bits of chicharrón and smoked fish.
Of course, the meat lover that I am, I can’t miss out on a good serving of Kapampangan morcon, their popular version of meat loaf, which has savory fillings like slices of salted eggs and sausages. Everything in it blends so perfectly with the palabok that I usually eat them together.
But Pampanga’s culinary attractions are just a fraction of what gives the province its charm. The adventurous soul will enjoy the exhilarating 4x4 vehicle ride to the Mount Pinatubo crater, which brings tourists across a vast lahar field left by the volcano’s devastating 1991 eruption. The trip also requires a trek to the crater, but all that effort is rewarded by the awesome view of the shimmering turquoise waters of the crater lagoon.
There is also the Betis Church, which religious devotees refer to as the “Sistine Chapel of the Philippines” because of its intricate ceiling murals and the ornate artistic details of its interiors, similar to those
and
of its counterpart in the Vatican. The church’s Baroque architecture easily gives one the feeling of being in Italy, where this architectural style, with its sweeping curves and dramatic visuals, originated in the 16th century.
If you are traveling with children, they will be interested in seeing retired military aircraft, helicopters, and jet fighters up close at the Air Force City Park in Clark. But a “must” on the itinerary is Clark Aqua Planet. This 10-hectare water park has a total of 38 water slides designed with the safety of young people in mind. Ideal for children is the Wave River, where they can enjoy a relaxing and tranquil ride,
For history buffs, an interesting destination is the Pamintuan Mansion. Built in 1890, it was a wedding gift from the couple Valentina and Mariano Pamintuan to their son, Florentino. What makes this property valuable is that it served as the headquarters of General Antonio Luna and the seat of the Philippine Republic during that era. It was also the venue for the first anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence in 1899. Today, it houses several galleries showcasing Filipino life, culture, and traditions. There are many other attractions, including its friendly and caring people, that make up the irresistible charm of Pampanga. And for us at the Philippine Retirement Authority, we are very excited to learn of Gov. Lilia Pineda’s plan to establish a worldclass Retirement Township, which
will certainly make the province a primary destination for foreign retirees.
This upcoming massive facility will have housing for independent and assisted-living foreign retirees. Residing there will give them easy access to medical facilities, shopping, and leisure activities like tennis, bowling, and golf.
Deluxe facilities like this will certainly help ensure that our country maintains its current designation as the “Number One Retirement Destination in the World,” and Pampanga’s charm will help us do it.
