Beijing denies hand in making racist monkey video

By Charles Dantes CHINA distanced its government from an AI-generated video criticized by Philippine officials as racist and dehumanizing, while reiterating Beijing’s longstanding rejection of the 2016 South China Sea arbitration ruling.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the Chinese government did not produce the controversial video.

“About the video you mentioned, this is not an act of the government,” Lin said.

Pressed further about the video, Lin declined to elaborate.

“I have no comment on that,”he added.

The remarks came after various government officials strongly condemned AIgenerated videos and editorial cartoons published by the state-run China Daily, saying they portrayed Filipinos in a racist and degrading manner amid continuing tensions in the South China Sea.

Ping claims 2 projects worth P75-m were not implemented

EN. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Saturday alleged the existence of ghost flood control projects in Taguig, a political stronghold of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.

The former made this claim in response to the latter’s insinuations during a Saturday livestream regarding Lacson’s declared net worth, which, as claimed by Cayetano, appeared to have doubled based on his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth

(SALN) as of June 30, 2025.

Responding to Cayetano’s push for a Senate investigation into the flood control controversy, Lacson advised his colleague not to get too excited.

“And yes, regarding Blue Ribbon hearings, he should not get bored;

there are also ghost (projects) in Taguig,” Lacson said in mixed English and Filipino.

The lawmaker alleged that two projects totaling P75 million were not executed from Cayetano’s P6.79-billion budget insertions under the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

“Unlike Senator Cayetano with P6.79 billion in budget insertions under the 2025 GAA, (I have no) insertions a.k.a. pork barrel, since I became a senator. (And I do not have any) 25-percent kickback (for) slope

protection and other infra projects.

I don’t know about him, but I have consistently refused lobby monies in relation to my job as a legislator,” Lacson said.

“Out of his P6.79-billion budget insertions under the 2025 GAA, 68 out of the 70 projects were implemented. So, only 2 projects, equivalent to around P75 million, are left unreleased or unobligated. In short, a total of P6.715 billion was spent.

Expect bombshell from NBI chief in impeach trial – Ridon

By Maricel V. Cruz NATIONAL Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag is expected to provide significant information on the bureau’s wider investigation into continuing threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family.

House prosecutor Terry Ridon declined to reveal the anticipated information before Matibag takes the witness stand, saying advance disclosure would defeat the purpose of the expected revelation.

“If I said that now, it wouldn’t be a bombshell anymore. So, let us just wait for Director Matibag’s testimony,” Ridon said.

Matibag will appear as the prosecution’s final witness under Article IV, which covers Vice President Sara Duterte’s recorded statements con-

cerning the President, first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Ridon said the NBI chief would go beyond the technical findings already presented by the Cybercrime Division and explain the work performed by the bureau’s other investigative units.

“But of course, our main focus is to let him speak his truth, particularly regarding the comprehensive investigation conducted by the NBI,” he said.

The first two NBI witnesses addressed the authentication of the electronic evidence, its chain of custody, the contents of the recordings and the Cybercrime Division’s findings.

By Rex Espiritu THE Philippine National Police’s Northern Police District (NPD) has created a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to investigate the fatal shooting of blogger Alicia “Mima Alicia” Lipata and the wounding of her live-in partner in Caloocan City.

In a statement, the NPD said it activated SITG “MIMA” to ensure a focused, thorough, and expeditious investigation into the attack that occurred in Barangay 171 in the early hours of July 17.

The task group has been directed to use all available investigative and intelligence resources to identify, locate, and arrest those responsible, as well as determine the motive behind the killing.

“The Northern Police District strongly condemns the shooting incident that resulted in the death of Ms. Alicia ‘Mima Alicia’ Lipata, a blogger, and the wounding of her live-in partner,” the NPD said.

Police extended condolences to Lipata’s family and wished her injured partner a speedy recovery.

The NPD also appealed to the public to provide any information that could help investigators, assuring that all tips would be treated with strict confidentiality.

The military described the incident as a “cowardly” and “senseless” act of violence that showed the perpetrators’ complete disregard for human life and public safety.

“Our soldiers were simply carrying out their sworn duty of serving and protecting the people when they became the target of this criminal attack,” the 6th Infantry Division said.

The division also expressed concern for the three civilians injured in the blast and wished all five victims a speedy recovery.

It commended the wounded soldiers for their courage and professionalism, saying they remained steadfast in carrying out their mission despite the attack.

The Army assured the public that the incident would not weaken its resolve to maintain peace and security in the region and urged residents to report any information that could help identify and arrest those responsible.

JICA project seen to ease flooding in Cavite THE Provincial Government of Cavite is working with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on infrastructure projects aimed at reducing flooding in the province’s low-lying and industrial areas.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Eloisa Rozul said the Cavite Industrial Area Flood Risk Management Project will benefit Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta, Rosario, and Tanza, which frequently experience flooding due to overflowing rivers and interconnected drainage systems.

The project includes the construction of a flood-retarding basin in Bacoor, Imus, and General Trias, as well as improvements to river channels, floodways, drainage systems, and bridges to help divert excess floodwater toward Manila Bay. Government maps out Sulu’s transition to Region IX

The Office of the Special Assistant to the President (OSAP) said it convened an inter-agency meeting on July 16 at the Premier Guest House in Malacañang to align government plans and address key concerns related to Sulu’s transition.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Department of Budget and Management, Department of Health, Department of Education, the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Management of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority

and provincial authorities.

The inter-agency discussions come as the government implements the administrative transition following Sulu’s exclusion from BARMM after the Supreme Court ruled that the province is not part of the autonomous region because it rejected ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law in the 2019 plebiscite.

OSAP said national, regional, and provincial officials reaffirmed their commitment to work together to ensure that the province’s transition proceeds without disrupting government services and supports long-term stability and development for Sulu.

Ang’s lawyer seeks dismissal of obstruction raps

By Pot Chavez A LAWYER for gaming tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang is seeking the dismissal of an obstruction of justice complaint before the Department of Justice (DOJ).

This is in relation to bribery allegations in exchange for withdrawing the case against Ang involving the missing sabungeros.

“Atty. Carol’s meetings with the relatives of the victims happened because they asked for them. It is an undeniable fact,” said lawyer Isabella Sabio, counsel for Caroline Cruz, on Friday.

“To say that a payoff ensued from those encounters is not only preposterous but also a product of a sinful imagination, which must be legally proven by the complainants,” she added.

In her counter-affidavit filed last week,

Sabio sought the dismissal of the complaint filed against her and some relatives of the missing sabungeros, saying it lacks legal basis.

Sabio also denied that Cruz prevented complainants from attending the case proceedings involving Ang, who is facing kidnapping and murder charges.

For their part, other relatives of the missing sabungeros also denied the bribery allegations.

Cristy Ladao and Jocelyn dela Cruz, respondents in an obstruction of justice complaint alleging they received bribes in exchange for dropping their case against Ang, filed their counter-affidavit last week.

In their submission, they insisted that the claims were untrue, noting that while they previously met with Ang’s counsel, they did not discuss the withdrawal of any case.

DSWD extends aid to family of slain motorcycle taxi rider THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has extended assistance to the family of motorcycle taxi rider Fabio Norberte Jr., who was fatally stabbed by his passenger in Caloocan City on July 14.

DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said the agency immediately provided assistance after learning that Norberte was a solo parent with a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

The agency released P10,000 in cash assistance and a family food pack to the

victim’s sister, and also assured the family of funeral assistance through a guarantee letter.

The family was likewise informed about the documentary requirements for medical and financial assistance under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.

DENR distributes 13,000 seedlings in Bataan THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) distributed 13,372 free seedlings in Bataan to strengthen community participation in environmental conservation and reforestation.

The seedlings were distributed through the Community PANTREE program of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Bagac to residents of Mariveles, Bagac, and Morong.

CENRO Bagac Chief Brenda Clemente said the program encourages communi-

ties to take an active role in protecting the environment by providing quality planting materials.

Justice spokesperson Atty. Polo Martinez told the Manila Standard that the obstruction complaint is still pending before the DOJ. In May, the complaint was filed by other relatives of the missing sabungeros against Cruz and other former complainants.

FAST urges farm cold storage to cut food losses T HE Philippines needs to rethink its cold chain strategy by moving beyond simply expanding warehouse capacity and instead building modern cold storage and processing facilities closer to agricultural production areas, a logistics executive said.

FAST Logistics Group business unit head for cold chain operations, Marc Anthony Dizon, said bringing cold chain infrastructure nearer to farms would help reduce post-harvest losses, lower logistics costs, and strengthen the country’s food security.

At the 2026 Mid-Year Food and Agribusiness E-Conference organized by the University of Asia and the Pacific-Center for Food and Agribusiness, Dizon said increasing storage capacity alone would not address the country’s food logistics challenges unless facilities are strategically located near production areas and made more accessible through shared logistics models.

“We need cold storage closer to where food is produced, while making these facilities accessible through shared logistics models that allow more farmers and food businesses to benefit from modern cold chain infrastructure,” he said.

Dizon is a member of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Supply Chain and Logistics Guild, which provides logistics advisory services to micro, small and medium enterprises. He has also served as a technical consultant to the Cold Chain Association of the Philippines and has lectured on supply chain and cold chain management.

Storage gap The Philippines requires about 1.4 million pallet positions to meet annual food consumption requirements but currently has only about 860000, leaving a substantial shortfall in cold storage capacity.

Compounding the problem, much of the country’s existing cold storage infrastructure is concentrated near major consumption centers such as Metro Manila rather than in agricultural production areas, where crops, meat and fisheries products are most vulnerable to spoilage immediately after harvest.

Dizon said establishing cold rooms and value -adding processing facilities near farms would enable produce to be sorted, cleaned, i n s p e c te d a n d p ro ce s s e d at the source before being transported to markets.

By removing waste and non-value-adding materials before transport, producers can move only market-ready p r o d u c t s, i m p r o v i n g t r u c k utilization, lowering logistics costs and preserving product quality throughout the supply chain.

Locating processing facilities closer to production areas would also reduce the need to operate in Metro Manila, where land and labor costs are generally higher.

“Producers avoid transporting unnecessary weight and waste over long distances, making logistics more efficient and reducing overall supply chain costs,” Dizon said.

Shared logistics Dizon also advocated a shared cold chain model that allows multiple farmers and agribusinesses to use common warehouse infrastructure, processing facilities and refrigerated transport instead of making individual capital investments.

Under the model, commodities remain in dedicated temperaturecontrolled storage environments based on their specific handling, humidity and food safety requirements.

“Shared cold chain is about sharing infrastructure efficiently while maintaining commodity-specific storage zones and food safety standards,” Dizon said, adding that the model would give small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises access to modern cold chain services that would otherwise require significant capital outlays, while enabling logistics operators to maximize facility utilization and benefit from economies of scale.

Dizon added that rising fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions have further highlighted the importance of shared logistics infrastructure and more cost-efficient supply chains.

Digital technologies Beyond expanding physical infrastructure, Dizon said digital technologies will play an increasingly important role in building a more resilient food supply chain.

He called for the development of a comprehensive agriculture database supported by digital analytics to improve inventory visibility, demand forecasting and distribution planning, helping reduce waste and move food more efficiently from producers to consumers.

“Food security is not just about producing more food. It’s about ensuring we have the logistics infrastructure and technology to preserve food quality, reduce waste, and move products efficiently from farms to consumers,” he said.

The recommendations echoed broader discussions during the conference, where industry leaders identified logistics modernization as a critical component of strengthening the country’s food security amid climate risks, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainty.

Beyond the usual competition on the racetrack, Race Weekend 2 of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Philippine Cup also served an important purpose: the event became a “rolling laboratory” for testing low-carbon biofuels. TMP is the first car manufacturer to test the use of biofuels for motorsports in the Philippines, and this initiative comes in line with its mission to advance the cause of more sustainable motorsports.

The racecars competing this weekend in the Vios One-Make Races used an E20 bio-ethanol blend, while the Tamaraw One-Make Races used a B5 coco-biodiesel blend. In addition to being low-carbon alternatives, the use of these

N a country where nearly half of Filipinos aged 20 to 59 are now living with obesity, it would be easy for Novo Nordisk’s Wei Sun to focus solely on selling the Danish pharmaceutical giant’s weightreducing drugs.

Instead, Sun, general manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines, has made it her mission to help slow — and eventually reverse — the rise of obesity by driving awareness and understanding of the disease, one that needs evidence-based, holistic care.

“As a pharma company, we have a primary responsibility to bring innovation,” Sun says in an interview with MS Good Life. “But we also know that medication alone does not help patients live healthier lives. So we do a lot of advocacy work with the general population: What is really a healthy lifestyle? What causes

obesity or diabetes? What can individuals do?”

The numbers show why the work matters.

According to the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), obesity among Filipino adults aged 20 to 59 rose from 39.8% in 2023 to 44.5% in 2025.

The survey found obesity to be significantly more prevalent among females (50.1%), urban residents (48.3%), and individuals from wealthy households (57.8%).

Metro Manila recorded the highest prevalence at 52.7%, followed by CAR at 50.6% and Central Luzon at 49.6%.

The problem is also growing among the young. Obesity among Filipino adolescents aged 10 to 19 climbed from 12.5% in 2023 to 15.6% in 2025. Overnutrition in this age group is significantly higher among males (16.7%), those in urban areas (18.0%), and those from rich households (28.3%).

Call for healthier food environments Last year, the National Nutrition Council (NNC), UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a joint statement calling for stronger policies to prevent childhood overweight and obesity.

A UNICEF study released in June 2021 warned that if no action is taken, more than 30% of adolescents in the Philippines will be overweight or obese by 2030.

MSD in the Philippines, PHAPCares Foundation, and Project Red Ribbon have completed a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine donation program that provided full vaccination to 500 people living with HIV (PLHIV), underscoring the need to integrate preventive care into HIV treatment.

MSD donated 1,500 doses of the HPV vaccine to PHAPCares Foundation for Project Red Ribbon in 2025. The beneficiaries completed the three-dose vaccination regimen for immunocompromised individuals this month, the group said in a statement.

The initiative comes as the Philippines continues to face one of the fastest-growing HIV surges in the Asia-Pacific region, with healthcare advocates calling for HPV vaccination and other preventive interventions to become part of comprehensive HIV care.

PHAPCares Foundation Executive Director Dr. Maria Rosarita Siasoco said PLHIV face a significantly higher risk of persistent HPV infections that can lead to various forms of cancer.

“PLHIVs face a significantly higher risk of persistent HPV infections, which can lead to different forms of cancer. Despite this elevated risk, preventive interventions like HPV vaccination and early screening are not always fully integrated into HIV care pathways,” she said.

Siasoco said HIV cases in the Philippines require urgent attention and PHAPCares seeks to improve access to life-saving healthcare innovations while ensuring underserved communities are not left behind.

She also cited limited awareness among some patients and healthcare providers about the increased risk of HPV-related diseases among immunocompromised individuals, as well as limited access to HPV vaccines within HIV programs.

“By supporting this initiative, PHAPCares aimed to bridge these gaps through targeted education, advocacy, and collaboration,” she said.

Project Red Ribbon President Ico Johnson said the organization successfully administered all 1,500 vaccine doses to 500 PLHIV clients.

“We were able to deliver the 1,500 doses to 500 PLHIV clients who are in need of the HPV vaccine. Because of the vaccines, we were able to continue providing client-centered services to people living with HIV,” Johnson said.

He added that HIV care should extend beyond treatment to include protection from other sexually transmitted infections and related health risks.

Organized by Let’s Golf Pare, the Beginner Golf League has quickly established itself as one of the country’s fastestgrowing grassroots golf initiatives, providing first-time and novice golfers with an encouraging environment to experience competitive play without the pressure commonly associated with traditional tournaments.

Designed for players who have only recently taken up the game, have yet to break the 100-stroke barrier, or are simply looking to experience their first organized competition, the league continues to bridge the gap between casual golf and tournament play.

Filipino drag performers are taking the spotlight in a new stage production as Adonis Prodhouse debuts VERSUSAN, a lip sync showcase bringing together some of the country’s best-known queens on July 26 at Vice Comedy Club.

The event features an all-star lineup including Drag Race Philippines” winner Precious Paula Nicole, alongside drag artists Brigiding, Viñas Deluxe, Minty Fresh, Odasha, Shewarma, Miss Jade So, Zymba Ding, Angel Galang, NAIA, Katana, and Merckz.

Rather than crowning a winner, VERSUSAN is putting the focus on each performance. Each

queen will first present an individual production before facing another performer in a series of lip sync battles designed to highlight creativity and stage presence instead of competition.

To support the performances, Adonis Prodhouse is providing each participating queen with a production budget for costumes, props, reveals, and other stage elements, allowing them to create more elaborate numbers.

RINCESS Aliyah has spent much of her youth in front of cameras, but adulthood, she believes, will require her to look more closely at the decisions she makes away from them.

As she prepares to turn 18, the young star wants to become more responsible, more independent, and more certain of her own opinions after years of relying on her parents for guidance.

“Since I’m still a minor, most of my decisions rely on my parents. But now that I’m turning 18, it’s more of my responsibility,” Princess told Manila Standard Entertainment.

Yet, she admitted that her mother remains the example she hopes to follow as she takes on those responsibilities. Princess has long regarded her mom as her role model, a view she said has remained unchanged since her time inside the Pinoy Big Brother house.

“Since PBB, sinasabi ko na po talaga, mommy ko po talaga ang aking role model and inspiration. Now that I’m turning 18, mas gusto ko po talaga na mas maging responsible like her, mas maging strong pa po like her,” she said.

Princess will celebrate her debut on Aug. 7 at a Manila hotel with family, friends, and fellow Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab 2.0 housemates. Her big day, themed “A Celebration of Grace and Dreams,” will include a grand entrance, cotillion dance, live performances, and other traditional debut rites.

The celebration comes during a busy period for the young star. She currently appears in the GMA Afternoon Prime series You’re My Favorite Song and recently released “Amba,” her first solo single under GMV Studios, a collaboration between GMA and Viva.

She also hopes audiences will begin seeing more than the soft and demure image often associated with her. Princess wants to explore challenging roles, including villains, action, and thriller projects. To prepare, she has started boxing and plans to train in Muay Thai.

Seven int’l acts who are skipping Manila

Then, we’ll be having BIGBANG and BTS early next year, giving K-pop fans several major shows to anticipate.

BIGBANG was initially among the acts whose tour plans left Filipino fans disappointed. That changed when the group added Manila to its XX : COSMOS 20th anniversary world tour, with a show scheduled for Feb. 20, 2027, at the SMDC Festival Grounds in Parañaque.

Still, Manila remains absent from the announced itineraries of several international artists.

NCT 127 NCT 127’s Neo City: The Redline tour lists Seoul, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, and Taipei. Manila is missing for now, although the announcement asks fans to “stay tuned,” suggesting more stops could follow.

Stray Kids Stray Kids brought its dominATE tour to the Philippine Arena in 2024, but the Philippines has yet to appear in a newly announced tour schedule. Filipino STAYs will have to watch for possible additional dates.

ENHYPEN ENHYPEN’s Blood Saga world tour has expanded beyond Seoul, with dates announced across other regions. No Philippine concert has been confirmed so far.

NMIXX NMIXX included Bangkok, Singapore, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, and Tokyo in the Asian leg of its first world tour but skipped Manila despite holding a fan concert here in May 2025.

ILLIT The Philippines is also missing from ILLIT’s initial tour plans. The group has focused on selected Asian markets, leaving Filipino fans waiting for a possible extension.

Sandara Park Sandara Park’s absence may sting more because of her long connection to the Philippines.

Her rePRISM fan concert tour includes several Asian cities, but Manila has not been announced.

The Weeknd The Weeknd’s Asian leg covers Tokyo, Jakarta, Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur, yet Manila is nowhere on the schedule.

Why are we being skipped? Artists rarely give one clear reason, but the cost of mounting concerts here may be part of it. Promoters must consider taxes, venue rental, imported equipment, logistics, and other production expenses. Limited venue options and tighter profit margins can also make neighboring Asian markets easier to include.

These omissions may not be final. BIGBANG already proved a Manila stop can still arrive after the first announcement.

Educators and administrators from Benilde and Chulalongkorn University build on a regional partnership that opens new training spaces for young artists in Southeast Asia

The program will allow eligible students from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s School of Arts, Culture, and Performance to study at the Thai university while earning academic credits that can be transferred to their home institution.

The opportunity covers students in dance, production design, theater arts, music, culture-based fine arts, and creative industries management. Participants may take part in studio work, workshops, and performance exchanges under Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts.

More than a change of classroom, the exchange gives Filipino students the chance to observe how artists in another Southeast Asian country approach training, performance, production, and cultural work.

Thailand has a long history of preserving its traditional arts while developing its contemporary counterparts. Exposure to that setting may give students a wider view of their discipline and help them understand how culture shapes artistic practice.

Filipino students will not be the only ones studying abroad under the partnership, as Benilde will also welcome participants from Chulalongkorn University’s music, visual arts, dance, and creative arts departments. Thai participants will be able to study and work with Filipino students within Benilde’s arts programs.

Tax season enters the Gen Z group chat

By Jasper Valdez YOUNG Filipinos are finding more ways to earn through freelance projects, online businesses and digital platforms. As these income streams grow, so does the number of first-time taxpayers learning how to register, keep records and file returns on their own.

According to Taxumo’s 2026 State of Online Taxation report, Gen Z users on the platform increased by 19.6 percent from the previous year and made up 26.7 percent of income tax returns filed through the service.

The increase does not necessarily mean young people are suddenly excited about tax forms. It reflects how many of them now make money outside a traditional office. And unlike regular employees whose employers commonly handle tax withholding, self-employed workers must take a more active role in registering, keeping records and filing returns.

While the rules can still be confusing, those managing taxes for the first time now have more digital tools to help them complete basic requirements without always visiting a BIR office.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue’s (BIR) Online Registration and Update System, or ORUS, allows taxpayers to complete certain registration and account updates online. The agency also provides electronic systems for filing returns and paying taxes.

Still, going online does not remove the need to understand the rules.

Freelancers, content creators and online sellers generally need to declare income earned from their work. Digital income is not exempt simply because it comes from clients or platforms based online. Income received from foreign clients may also need to be reported, although taxes already paid abroad may be considered under applicable rules.

Understanding which registration requirements apply can
