T

HE Philippine National Police thwarted a possible school shooting and stabbing incident at Tolosa National High School in Leyte, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Thursday said, describing the threat as a “copycat crime” following the shooting spree at the Tacloban City school. Remulla said Senator Bam Aquino called him on Wednesday night to relay information that a 14-year-old female student was allegedly planning to carry out an attack at the Leyte school. "That very day, again, thanks to Senator Bam Aquino, he was the one who gave me the info. He called me at 8 p.m. and I said that I’ll be on it right away, and at 11 p.m. we went to the child, we found her," he said. "We think she wanted to commit a copycat crime. That's what's dangerous here, because they see it in video games that it's so easy to kill people, they think it was done there, so they can do it too," Remulla added. Venezuela's strongest earthquake since 1900 sent rescuers and locals clambering in the dark over flattened apartments, hunting for survivors and extracting people from under the ruins.

France, Spain, and the US offered to urgently send rescuers after the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, which struck areas west of the capital on Wednesday evening. The toll has climbed quickly, with interim president Delcy Rodriguez reporting at least 164 dead and over 970 hurt and noting the state of La Guaira north of Caracas was hit hard. Next page
