By Jeremiah Sevilla ALEX Eala continued to take down giants as the Filipina ace clobbered world No. 8 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, 6-3, 6-4, to barge into the semifinals of the Berlin Tennis Open 2026 in Germany early Saturday morning (Philippine time). Eala once again displayed her impeccable returning at the Steffi Graf Stadion to brush aside the 20-time WTA Tour winner Svitolina in their 83-minute quarterfinal match and secure her first semis appearance in a WTA 500 event. “I think I’m getting better.
I hope I’m getting better. Of course, being exposed to this kind of level more often really pushes you to your limits and forces you to showcase what you got,” she said in an interview after the match. “Some weeks are better than others, and I’m really enjoying this week. I hope to bring out the best in me and showcase my tennis as there is really no easy draw here. There is no easy match... So thank you everyone for coming along on the ride,” Eala added. Coming off a 7-5, 6-4 shocker over No. 2 and two-time Grand Slam champion Elena Rybakina, the No. 35 Pinay netter seized her sixth career win against a top 10 player. With her ninth victory in the grass court swing, Eala set up a final four duel against No. 13 and eighth seed Linda Noskova of Czech Republic.
The semifinal will be a rematch of their Indian Wells meeting earlier this year, which Noskova won, 6-2, 6-0. Eala, still hot from her massive upset of Rybakina, zoomed to a scorching 3-0 start anchored on her fiery forehand winners. The 21-year-old rising star then converted her second break point to keep the 31-year-old Svitolina at bay, 5-3, before banking on her improved service to punctuate the first set in 33 minutes. Eala got off to a strong start anew with two straight games to open the second set, but Svitolina answered back to quickly equalize at 2-2. The Birmingham Open champ relied on her solid return play to dominate the next three games before staving off the Italian Open titlist’s late fightback to seal the deal.

ICE President Sara Duterte will attend her impeachment trial “if necessary,” her legal counsel Michael Poa said ahead of the start of the proceedings on July 6. “We always say if it’s necessary, but we can’t say when that will happen,” Poa said in an interview after Thursday’s pre-trial conference at the Senate. “As for us, we have an open line of communication with the VP,” he added. Poa noted the defense panel has submitted its pre-trial brief, which exceeds 60 pages. The document includes the names of various witnesses that the defense intends to present before the impeachment court, including former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Ramil Madriaga, and several current and former government officials. For his part, House Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V underscored the importance of the Vice President’s attendance in the trial. “The non-attendance and not commenting correspond to a strategy. It’s up to the defense on how they will handle it,” Ortega said.

ICC sets Rody’s trial rules ahead of Nov. 30 opening THE International Criminal Court issued rules governing the conduct of proceedings in the crimes against humanity case against former President Rodrigo Duterte, whose trial is scheduled to begin on November 30. These cover matters such as the reading of charges, trial briefs, opening statements, presentation of evidence, witness examination, protective measures, use of private and/or closed session, public ver-
sions of filings, transcript redactions, and email decisions. In its June 19 decision, the ICC Trial Chamber III took into account proposals and recommendations submitted by the parties and the Registry. “Issues left unaddressed in the present decision and which require intervention by the Chamber will be dealt with during the course of the trial, unless either party considers that there are matters which need
to be addressed before trial. In that event, submissions may be made at the next status conference,” read the decision signed by Presiding Judge Joanna Korner. The decision also stated that the chamber would not regulate witness questioning in the abstract, with the necessity or propriety of any particular question to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. The prosecution must file by August 31 a detailed trial brief, in
addition to a list of witnesses it intends to call during the trial and a list of all items it plans to submit as evidence during the trial. The defense must likewise file its response by October 30. This needs to indicate “the principal matters of fact or law on which issue is taken with the prosecution and the reasons for such issue being taken” and “the general nature of the accused’s defense.” Turn to A4
Israel, Hezbollah agree to a ceasefire as US-Iran peace deal under strain BEIRUT – Israel and Hezbollah agreed a ceasefire Saturday (Manila time), a US official said, after deadly exchanges between the two sides in Lebanon once again put a deal to end the Middle East war under strain, less than two days after it was signed. Iran struck their deal. Despite the ceasefire announcement, Lebanon’s civil defense agency said ongoing Israeli strikes on the Nabatieh district in the country’s south on Saturday had killed 16 people. Civil defense personnel have transported “16 dead and 12 wounded” to hospital, a statement said, adding that the personnel were working “since the early morning hours” in the Nabatieh Turn to A4
