ENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian was elected Senate President after Senator Joel Villanueva provided the necessary 13th vote to establish a new majority and end the leadership row with Senator Alan Cayetano during yesterday’s special session.

“The opportunity to serve as Senate President is a great honor. Along with this is the call to be an exemplar in service every day. Above all, this role is a responsibility to the Senate, to our Constitution, and to the Filipino people. We hear the call of the public. The priorities are clear: laws and measures that will address the country’s most pressing problems,” Gatchalian said in his acceptance speech before a plenary where members of the Cayetano bloc were all absent. “The people expect one thing: concern, action, and results.
