‘US-IRAN DEAL TO BE SIGNED TODAY, HORMUZ TO OPEN IMMEDIATELY’

Iran had offered a different timeline earlier in the day, but nonetheless signalled an agreement was in the offing, as both the warring parties and their mediators expressed increasing optimism that weeks of halting negotiations were drawing to a close.

Prospects of a peace agreement have raised hopes of lower and more stable fuel prices, Philippine energy officials and business leaders said Sunday, even as uncertainty remains over whether a deal will be finalized.

The leader of key mediator Pakistan said a deal was closer "than ever before".

The "finalisation" of this agreement is expected "within the next 24 hours", Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Saturday on X, adding that it will be signed electronically, without going into further detail or specifying what this would involve.

He said "technical level talks" are expected to follow next week.

A Pakistani foreign ministry statement also said the signing was planned for Sunday.

In a briefing last week, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said discussions on a possible special session are still being finalized.

Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro said it could help address pending matters and restore order in the legislative process, while Akbayan partylist Rep. Perci Cendaña cited the need to act on urgent measures, including a proposed supplemental budget for assistance related to the Middle East crisis and other priority legislation.

Castro reiterated that a special session would be ineffective if senators remain unable to reach a consensus on leadership and legislative priorities.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could provide significant relief to the local economy through lower fuel costs, easing inflation and stronger economic growth prospects, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) chairwoman Enunina Mangio said.

PCCI chairman emeritus George Barcelon added: “A resolution to the Middle East conflict will reduce a lot of uncertainty. Oil prices will stabilize, lowering energy, fertilizer, and food costs.”

Travel and leisure businesses will return to help OFWs (overseas Filipino workers, Barcelon added.

Mangio said the resumption of normal shipping traffic through one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes is expected to bring down global crude oil prices, which could quickly translate into lower domestic fuel, electricity and transportation costs.

“Lower oil prices should help reduce the cost of gasoline, electricity and transport within weeks,” she said.

Mangio said the decline in energy costs could also contribute to easing inflationary pressures, potentially giving the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas more room to reduce interest rates and support economic expansion.

The PCCI chief also noted that lower shipping and energy costs could help reduce the prices of imported goods, including rice, machinery and other essential commodities, benefiting both consumers and businesses.

She added that the government could realize savings from reduced

fuel subsidy requirements, freeing up more resources for infrastructure and other development programs.

Mangio likewise highlighted the positive implications for overseas Filipino workers in the Gulf region, whose remittances remain a key pillar of the Philippine economy.

Former Energy Undersecretary Jay Layug welcomed reports of a possible agreement but said the Philippines must continue reducing its dependence on imported fuel.

“As we continue to rely on imported fuel, we hope that peace will finally happen in the Middle East,” said Layug, senior partner at Divina Law and president of the Developers of Renewable Energy for AdvanceMent Inc. “That will temper and stabilize any oil price fluctuations. Meanwhile, the Philippines needs to work hard on energy independence and utilizing more indigenous renewable energy resources,” he added.

An industry source told Manila Standard diesel prices could decrease

by P3.50 to P4 per liter based on movements in the Mean of Platts Singapore and foreign exchange averages from June 8 to 11.

Gasoline prices, however, are projected to increase by P0.50 to P1 per liter.

On June 9, gasoline prices rose by as much as P0.30 per liter, while diesel and kerosene prices increased by P4.80 to P5.77 per liter and P4.75 to P8.10 per liter, respectively.

The 23rd fuel price adjustment this year brought total net increases to P45.32 per liter for gasoline, P43.41

per liter for diesel, and P37.80 per liter for kerosene.

The industry source said world oil prices initially rose on renewed hostilities between Israel and Iran before retreating on reports that both sides had agreed to halt attacks on each other.

Prices climbed again amid heightened geopolitical tensions after US military strikes on Iranian targets and concerns over supply disruptions following Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Oil prices later eased on expectations that a peace agreement could be reached after Trump canceled planned strikes against Iran, the source added.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the DOE remains concerned about the impact of the Strait of Hormuz closure on both fuel prices and supply.

“We still have to stay vigilant because many of our suppliers still source oil from the Middle East,” Garin said.

“But now, the situation is better because our suppliers already know where to source supplies. Still, that means we're not yet out of the crisis.”

Garin said consumers should prepare for another round of fuel price increases and urged continued fuel conservation.

“My worry is more about supply than price,” she said. “Consumer behavior seems to have returned to the way it was before, so we have to go back to conserving.”

She added that the government may need to consider measures to limit the impact of future price increases on consumers. With AFP

How will there be a clear decision to convict or acquit? Does it mean automatic acquittal because only 15 are available to vote? To me it should not," Lacson hinted.

Because a valid conviction mandates a minimum of 16 affirmative votes under the Constitution, a mass suspension would automatically trigger a foregone conclusion of acquittal purely based on a lack of available voters.

Lacson warned that failing to address this looming attendance gap would spark an immediate constitutional crisis by completely paralyzing the impeachment process before it even begins.

"If they are preventively suspended, we will respect the decision of the courts. But maybe we can make a motion for the purpose of the impeachment trial to stay their suspension, or interpret their suspension to apply only to their legislative functions as senators, but not to their duties as senator judges," he said.

As a secondary alternative, the veteran lawmaker suggested that the entire impeachment trial could be frozen and deferred until the standard 90-day preventive suspensions of the affected lawmakers have completely lapsed.

"I can only speak for myself and I think some of my colleagues in the majority bloc, that we must stick to the Constitution first and foremost—16 votes or 2/3 of 24 will be needed to convict. You cannot subtract from that," he said.

Lacson also dismissed a suggestion by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano to deliberately lower the required voting threshold to 12 as a “deceptive and unacceptable” ploy.

The House prosecution team remains focused on complying with all procedural requirements and presenting its case before the impeachment court, Alonto Adiong said.

“If there is a case, hear it. If none, junk it. But due process must be finished,” he stressed.

“Hear the case. Determine the truth. Hope there would be no delay,” he added.

He said the House prosecution panel is prepared for the next phase of the proceedings and remains committed to presenting its evidence before the Senate impeachment court.

Government responders continued to assist the displaced residents, with 34 evacuation centers currently operating. About 2,000 families, or 10,000 individuals, remained sheltered at evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also reported extensive damage to infrastructure and housing. A total of 725 infrastructures sustained damage, with estimated losses estimated at P1 billion.

More than 54,000 houses were also destroyed by the powerful tremor, including 9,900 homes that were totaled and 44,100 partially.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the government remains committed to ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of assistance and the rapid rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure across affected areas.

According to the DPWH, major road sections and bridges that were previously closed have been restored and are now passable for motorists.

Among the repaired and reopened structures are Sapu Masla Bridge in Glan, Sarangani; Bucana Bridge in Davao City; and Lampari Bridge in South Cotabato. Several other infrastructure projects remain under repair, while temporary detour routes and alternate crossings have been made available to maintain access for motorists.

The government assured the public that rehabilitation efforts will continue until all affected roads, bridges, and public facilities are fully restored.

The agency also assisted in reopening local roads, conducting damage assessments, and carrying out emergency repairs on hospitals, health facilities, schools, and other critical infrastructure.

DPWH personnel likewise removed debris from private establishments that obstructed road networks after the earthquake, helping restore mobility in affected communities.

In Sarangani, the agency provided electric fans and extension cords and lent portable toilets to support patients and medical personnel at Glan Medicare Community Hospital.

The DPWH said it continues to work around the clock with other government agencies to conduct clearing, repair, and relief operations throughout the region.

In a statement, UAE Aid Agency chair Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri said that the assistance is intended to ease suffering and support early recovery efforts.

“This urgent UAE response stems from the country’s international responsibility toward communities and peoples facing natural disasters and crises. We aim to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the earthquake and help with early recovery and stability in coordination with international organizations and relevant local authorities,” he said.

Al Ameri further explained that the relief was based on a thorough needs assessment carried out in coordination with relevant Filipino authorities, to identify the primary needs of those affected.

He also reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to promptly providing essential life requirements in such critical situations, guided by humanitarian assessments from relevant United Nations agencies.

IN BRIEF Passengers safe as yacht runs aground in Tubbataha THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) responded to an aground motor yacht incident involving MY Philippine Siren 2 within the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in Palawan on Sunday.

The PCG received information on the incident at around 5 a.m. involving the 173-gross-ton motor yacht.

According to PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, the vessel ran aground after encountering a sudden squall while moored to an anchored buoy about 7.2 nautical miles northeast of Tubbataha Reef. The yacht had departed Puerto Princesa City on June 10 for a diving expedition.

A total of 28 persons were on board, consisting of 14 divers and 14 Filipino crew members. The divers included nine Americans, three Germans, and two Filipinos. A response team was dispatched aboard a Ranger Station patrol boat to assess the situation and render assistance. Rex Espiritu

Philippines backs new ILO convention for workers THE Philippines welcomed the adoption of ILO Convention No. 193 on Decent Work in the Platform Economy, calling it a major step toward protecting workers in the growing digital economy.

Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino said the country voted in favor of the convention during the 114th International Labour Conference, reaffirming support for fair and decent work for platform workers.

Convention No. 193 is the first international labor standard focused on workers engaged through digital platforms. It covers workplace safety, protection from violence and harassment, fair pay, social protection, proper employment classification, and safeguards against unfair account deactivation or termination.

4,500 hired on the spot at Independence Day fairs NEARLY 4,500 individuals were hired on the spot at job fairs simultaneously held across the country on Friday in commemoration of the Philippines’ 128th Independence Day, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said.

DHSUD extends HOA re-registration deadline to December 18

A POWERFUL earthquake that killed at least 61 people in the Philippines this week raised the seabed by as much as two meters (6.6 feet), exposing coral and harming marine life, the environment department said Sunday.

The 7.8-magnitude tremor on southern Mindanao island on Monday has also left at least 40 people missing, according to updated figures from the disaster agency.

Local residents first reported the geological phenomenon known as “coastal uplift” two days after the quake, which extended the shoreline by as much as 200 meters in some areas, the environment department said.

A shift in the Cotabato Trench “pushed upward part of the coastlines of Sarangani and Davao Occidental provinces, exposing the seabed that was originally submerged,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a statement.

“Approximately 2 meters was the mapped uplift.”

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday ordered all police units nationwide to strengthen water conservation efforts and prepare assistance measures for communities that may be affected by water shortages during the dry season.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. issued the directive after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) released a water conservation advisory as parts of the country continue to experience the effects of El Niño.

“I have directed all police units to strictly implement water conservation measures, including the immediate repair of leaks, responsible use of water in camps and stations, and the adoption of water-saving practices in daily operations. We want to ensure that

every police facility contributes to the national effort to conserve water during the dry season,” he said.

Apart from reducing water consumption within police facilities, the PNP is also preparing to assist local government units should water scarcity affect communities. Police units have been instructed to coordinate with local authorities and stand ready to support water distribution activities when needed.

Nartatez stressed that public cooperation remains vital as government agencies work to lessen the impact of El Niño.

“We encourage the public to practice responsible water consumption and cooperate with local government efforts to address the effects of El Niño. Conserving water today will help protect communities from more serious shortages in the coming months,” he said.

Comelec destroys ballots for scrapped BARMM polls THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Saturday reported that it has begun the disposal of over 2.4 million official ballots printed for the postponed Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary elections, supposedly on Oct. 13, 2025.

In March 2025, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. signed into law Republic Act No. 12317, resetting the first regular BARMM polls to the second Monday of September this year.

The transition period was also extended to allow the members of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority to continue governing “unless replaced by the President or their tenure shortened by their election to a different office.”

In a social media post, the poll body said 2,420,904 ballots would be destroyed to ensure that they could not be used in any way and to maintain the integrity, security, and credibility of the election processes.

It assured that the disposal of the ballots, deposited at the Comelec warehouse in Biñan,

Laguna would be in accordance with existing rules and procedures.

The elections will cover five provinces (Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur and Tawi-Tawi); Special Geographic Areas consisting of 63 villages in North Cotabato; 32 districts; three cities; 105 municipalities; and 2,185 villages.

LAW enforcers have confiscated some P107.76 million worth of illegal drugs and arrested 120 suspects in nationwide operations conducted June 4 to 11.

Meanwhile, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) reported significant accomplishments in multiple law enforcement campaigns, earning top national rankings in anti-illegal drugs, environmental protection, and economic security operations while maintaining one of the country’s lowest crime rates.

In a news release Sunday, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) director general Isagani Nerez said 78 operations were carried out across the country during the week.

“These operations were carried out through the coordinated efforts of PDEA Regional Offices, PNP (Philippine National Police) Drug Enforcement Groups, city and municipal police stations, and Regional Special Enforcement and Intelligence Units across all regions of the country,” Nerez said.

Of those arrested, 72 were identified as drug pushers, while eight were alleged drug den operators.

The suspects will face charges under Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act. Seized during the operations were 14,164.73 grams of shabu; 7,795.20 grams of marijuana kush; 755.62 grams of marijuana dried leaves; 8,355 pieces of marijuana plants; 10 pieces marijuana cartridges; 185 pieces ecstasy (tablets); 50 ml ecstasy (liquid); and 1.00 gram of cocaine, the press statement said.

Spectacles of ego

Free?

IT WAS 128 years since our flag was unfurled in Kawit, Cavite, where a leader proclaimed our islands independent from foreign rule, after the execution of a rival who started the revolution of the plebeian.

Shortly thereafter, a new foreign power snatched that independence through superior arms and the purchase of our territory from the previous colonizer via the Treaty of Paris where the voice of our self-proclaimed leaders were not heard.

While under the rule of that new colonizer, we were embroiled in the Pacific War, where our people fought and died in defense of its interests, who, seeing the costs of reconstruction too much of a burden as its priority was Europe after that global war, “granted” us our “independence” on the same day it celebrates its freedom from British rule.

And for 18 years, we elected five presidents under the 1935 Constitution which was crafted during the years when we were an American territory. It took the fifth president elected under it to initiate the change of our National Day and mark our independence from foreign yoke.

It took his successor 8 years, 3 months and 10 days to steal our self-proclaimed freedoms and install one-man rule, which mercifully ended when he and his family were exiled under the auspices of our former colonial masters, because finally, a military mutiny supported by our “people power” ended despotic power.

We thought that would be the beginning of a glorious new era in our history, where the fruits of freedom and democracy would finally result in the emancipation of our people from poverty and inequality.

Our new leader proclaimed a new Constitution which has been our fundamental law for the last 39 years. It has a Bill of Rights that provides guarantees of individual liberties few if any other Constitutions in other lands accord its citizens.

Yet despite staunch declaration of individual liberties, that 1987 charter gave us a confused and confusing political system which has through four decades brought us perpetual dynasties lording it over the land, and flags of convenience for personal ambitions masquerading as political parties.

Several leaders elected under that 1987 Constitution have sought to amend or revise it by various means, but they all floundered because our people suspected ignoble motive, which is the lifting of term limits imposed by that fundamental law.

Now we find ourselves at yet another crossroads in our interrupted 128-year history.

Our leaders fear the election of one whose family it has double-crossed, whose patriarch it surrendered to the waiting arms of the ICC in veritable admission that our justice system is

unfit to render justice to its own citizens.

No self-respecting nation has done that unusual precedent. Worse, that leader who was shanghaied into Den Haag was beloved by the people, and his daughter’s acquiescence to shack up politically with the current leader gave him his electoral mandate in 2022.

The son of the father who stole our individual freedoms almost 54 years ago is now slowly but surely denying our people the same freedoms, instituting a de facto martial rule step by step with the acquiescence of our congressional leaders whose be all and end all is perpetuating their power, their privileges and their pork barrel entitlements.

On our 128th National Day, our people find little to celebrate, with our poor and middleclass seeing future through escape from the motherland to seek opportunity elsewhere.

We have become a nation dependent on others for the defense of our 7,640 islands, dependent on others for our food security, and where a few of our own race have colonized us.

Is this what it means to be “free?”

Building citizens and leaders in the Age of AI FOR generations, education focused on helping students acquire knowledge and skills.

Today, knowledge is increasingly accessible, and technical skills are evolving rapidly.

The emerging challenge is helping students understand, evaluate, and use information wisely in an environment increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

AI-powered tools can answer questions, explain lessons, generate content, and provide personalized support. As these technologies become more common, they are reshaping how students learn and how teachers teach.

The question facing Philippine education is whether we are prepared to use it in ways that strengthen learning and develop better citizens.

This conversation comes at an important time.

The country continues to face learning recovery challenges, while many schools grapple with resource constraints and teachers carry significant instructional and administrative responsibilities.

Educational outcomes remain uneven across communities, particularly in underserved areas.

Technology alone will not solve these challenges. Yet AI offers opportunities that deserve serious attention.

When used responsibly, AI can help personalize learning, identify learning gaps, provide access to educational resources, and support teachers in delivering instruction more effectively.

Students in remote communities can gain access to learning opportunities that were once limited by geography and resources.

Educators can devote more time to teaching and mentoring by reducing repetitive tasks.

For a country where education remains one of the most important pathways to social mobility, these possibilities matter.

Quality education creates opportunities, expands choices, and allows individuals to pursue a better future regardless of circumstance.

There are already examples of what can be achieved when innovation is matched with

strong partnerships.

By Roy Cabonegro THE Filipino wallet has gone digital. But so have the pickpockets. In the age of e-wallets, QR payments, AI chatbots, and instant digital banking, the next bank robber may not carry a gun at all. He may carry an algorithm.

That was the sharp warning hovering over the recent SISA Customer Conclave at ShangriLa Makati, where cybersecurity professionals, payment-sector leaders, and industry partners gathered under the theme: “Empowering Connections. Securing Tomorrow.”

Co-organizing the event was WiSAP, or Women in Security Alliance Philippines, a nonprofit organization working to empower women professionals and leaders in the Philippine cybersecurity ecosystem through advocacy, training, networking, and industry collaboration. Its role in the conclave underscored a crucial point: cybersecurity is not only a technology issue; it is also a leadership, talent, and public-awareness challenge.

For the Philippines, the timing could not be more urgent.

In 2024, digital retail payments already made up 57.4 percent of total monthly retail payment volume, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

Government digital transactions have moved even faster, with 97.2 percent of government-to-person and government-to-business payments already processed electronically.

That means the country’s money now moves through apps, QR codes, APIs, cloud systems, digital IDs, e-wallets, payment gateways, tuition portals, cooperative systems, government cash assistance channels, and online banking platforms.

That is progress.

It is also one very big buffet table for cybercriminals.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology has found that among Filipinos who encountered phishing, SMS scams, hacking attempts, or online fraud, only 1.6 percent reported the incident.

Meanwhile, the National Privacy Commission reported 6.85 billion security incidents from 2018 to 2023, plus hundreds of formal personal data breach notifications involving sectors such as government, education, finanGovernment, educators, communities, civil society, and the private sector all have a role in ensuring technology serves learners effectively and responsibly.

Or what is left of it.

It might appear that all the people can do to get even with their self-adoring leaders is to poke fun at them over social media even as the sycophants around them continue feeding their ego. We are witnessing, to our horror, how the delusion of grandeur and indispensability are impairing these leaders’ good sense. The people, however, still have an opportunity to come to their senses – by voting them and their ilk out of office, and not having anything to do with them again.

UK intercepts Russian shadow fleet vessel in English Channel LONDON – British forces on Sunday intercepted a sanctioned oil tanker belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet in the English Channel, the defence ministry said.

The six-hour operation in the early hours was supported by aircraft, including Chinook helicopters, and navy vessels such as the frigate HMS Sutherland.

“In the first UK-led operation of its kind, the vessel SMYRTOS was boarded

by Royal Marine Commandos and specially trained law enforcement officers from the National Crime Agency, despite Russia’s best efforts to evade sanctions and continue fueling its barbaric war with Ukraine,” the ministry statement said.

The vessel will now be moved to an anchorage off the south coast of England and monitored, it added.

“Russia relies on its shadow fleet to fund their conflict in Ukraine and our interdiction delivers a blow to Putin’s illegal war,” said defense minister Dan Jarvis.

He said the operation was carried out in “close coordination with the French”.

Disrupting the shadow fleet was “directly bearing down on the resources sustaining Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and reducing its capacity to threaten security across Europe and beyond”, he added.

The UK has sanctioned hundreds of vessels suspected of being part of the shadow fleet used by Russia to bypass Western embargoes since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The ships -- usually ageing tankers with dubious ownership -- are banned from accessing UK ports and services.

In March, the government announced that British forces would be able to board and seize shadow fleet vessels passing through its waters.

The announcement followed the easing of restrictions by Washington on Russian oil to soften prices sent soaring by the US-Israel war against Iran.

WASHINGTON, DC – Workers removed President Donald Trump’s name from the facade of the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) -- a stinging defeat for the US leader who has eschewed political tradition to affix his name and likeness across public spaces.

The restoration of the performing arts venue’s original name was the culmination of extended legal tussling, with an anti-Trump crowd keeping watch Friday until late night thunderstorms forced construction workers to down tools.

In a legal filing Saturday, the center’s Executive Director Matt Floca said it had “removed all physical signage on the Kennedy Center building and grounds” containing Trump’s name.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, former

reality TV star Trump has aggressively imprinted himself onto the American political establishment.

Trump named himself chairman of the arts center and stacked the governing board with loyalists.

The board then voted in December to rename the venue as “The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”

The Republican president’s name was quickly added to the facade in large letters above that of Kennedy, spurring the cancellation of shows and plunging ticket sales for the remaining events.

North Korea says nuclear status ‘irreversible’—KCNA SEOUL– North Korea said Sunday its status as a nuclear weapons state was “irreversible” and key to ensuring regional stability, rejecting calls by the United States and its allies for denuclearisation.

Pyongyang has repeatedly insisted it will not abandon its nuclear arsenal, portraying it as essential to deterrence, with Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un calling the policy a “line of no retreat” earlier this month.

The North’s statement came after a trilateral meeting between South Korea, Japan and the United States in Tokyo on Friday, at which the allies reaffirmed their commitment to the “complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula”, according to Seoul’s foreign ministry.

“The US and its vassal forces’ meaningless rhetoric against the DPRK... can never affect the ir-

reversible position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state,” the unnamed spokesperson said in a statement published by the official Korean Central News Agency on Sunday, using the acronym for the North’s official name.

“The ‘denuclearization’ is an irreversibly finalised matter,” the official added.

The spokesperson also cited Washington’s sales of weapons systems to Seoul and Tokyo as justification for Pyongyang’s pursuit of its nuclear programme, describing it as “ a strong security guarantee for regional stability and peace”.

Knicks mania leaves World Cup in the cold NEW YORK—The World Cup carnival arrived in New York on Saturday, but it was drowned out by the city’s elation after the hometown Knicks broke a 53-year curse to win the NBA Finals.

The 2026 World Cup debut of fivetime winners Brazil, who ground out an uninspiring 1-1 draw against Morocco, was overshadowed by the Knicks’ 9490 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

New York erupted in celebration in the aftermath, with fans letting off fireworks and a cacophony of cheers and car horns reverberating around the city.

“Knicks in five!” chanted crowds after the hometown basketball dynasty sealed the seven-match series in five.

“It’s been so long, it’s been such a long time coming, you know?” Stephen Maltz, a 31-year-old airline pilot, said at a viewing party in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn.

“And it’s just in a time where the city needs to have something to get stoked about, it’s got to be this,” added Maltz, who tore off his signature orange and blue Knicks T-shirt and

ran down the street in celebration.

Times Square in central Manhattan was packed with Brazil and Morocco fans following their clash, but the rest of the city surged with elated crowds of Knicks fans.

“Everyone could unite over the New York Knicks, and that’s what we’re doing right now,” power plant worker Austin Fitzgerald, 31, told AFP. “There’s no other feeling like New York basketball.”

While Fitzgerald acknowledged that the city would bask in the win following the fixture that was played in Texas, he insisted the Big Apple would now be ready to fully embrace the World Cup. “There’s more soccer and football fans here than I think than any other city in America,” he said.

“Having games at MetLife, and just being able to stay in the city and commute” would appeal to New Yorkers new to football, he added.

Cavaliers’ Harden arrested in Texas on gun charge HOUSTON—Former NBA Most Valuable Player James Harden was arrested Saturday in Houston, Texas, on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon, court documents showed.

Harris County court records showed that Cleveland Cavaliers guard harden was taken into custody at 3:41 a.m. when an unconcealed handgun was spotted in his Mercedes.

Harden confirmed the gun was his and was arrested and booked into jail and released on a $100 bond, according to the documents, in which authorities said that the gun was not holstered and was in plain view.

Harden, 37, is to appear in court on June 22, and his bond terms ban him from possessing any firearms, ammunition or other weapons.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information,” the team said in a statement.

“We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available,” the Cavs added. “At this time, we will have no further comment.”

Cleveland acquired the veteran guard at the trade deadline in February.

The Knicks won the best-of-seven championship series 4-1, denying Victor Wembanyama and his young Spurs teammates on their home floor to lift the trophy for the first time since 1973.

The Knicks, who recovered from 29 points down in game four in the biggest comeback win in Finals history, erased a double-digit deficit to win for the fourth time in the series.

Brunson scored eight of the Knicks’ meager 13 first-quarter points.

They trailed by 16 in the second quarter and were down by 10 early in the fourth, but Brunson wouldn’t let them lose.

“I’ve got no words,” Brunson said after setting a Knicks record for points in a Finals game, surpassing Willis Reed’s 38 in game three of the team’s 1970 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following the announcement of the main draw matchups on Saturday night, the world No. 33 Eala is set to take on the No. 76 Vekic in the first round (Round of 32), with the match tentatively scheduled on Monday.

Eala will eye to reassert her mastery over Vekic in the WTA 500 Berlin tilt after winning their first two encounters.

The Pinay netter downed the Croatian, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand last January 5.

McGinn gives Scotland win over Haiti on World Cup return FOXBOROUGH—A scrappy finish

by John McGinn allowed Scotland to mark their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a nervy 1-0 win over outsiders Haiti on Saturday.

Aston Villa captain McGinn fired in with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark at the Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, which was filled to its 64,000 capacity with a majority of Scottish fans.

They have travelled to the United States in large numbers to follow Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998, and were able to celebrate a rare victory at the tournament as they go top of Group C. They had to hang on grimly at the end, but the victory puts them on course to get to the last 32, especially as the eight best third-placed sides will go through from the group stage.

Haiti are one of the lowest-ranked sides at the tournament, at 84th in the world, and Scotland knew the importance of beating the Caribbean nation with tougher tests to come.

They play Morocco at the same stadium in their next game on Friday before heading to Miami to take on Brazil. Morocco and Brazil drew 1-1 in Saturday’s other Group C encounter in New Jersey.

PSC earmarks P90m for rehab of PhilSports THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has earmarked a P90 million budget for the planned rehabilitation of the PhilSports Complex Track Oval in Pasig City as part of the sports governing body’s goal to develop and renovate venues for hosting international tournaments.

PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio said that the refurbishment of the track oval in the historical complex, formerly known as ULTRA, is already in the pipeline following the repairs made recently at the Teacher’s Camp in Baguio City.

“Kakatapos lang natin sa Baguio.

Nakahanda na ang susunod natin diyan ‘yong PhilSports na,” Gregorio told reporters during his visit on the penultimate day of the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championships 2026 on Saturday at the New Clark City Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.

“Gagawin na natin ‘yan sa lalong madaling panahon,” he added.

Gregorio added that the PSC is working closely with the Philippine Athletics, Inc. (PATAFA) to ensure that the renovation of the PhilSports track is aligned with international standards.

“Lahat ‘yan is spearheaded by PSC, but we don’t do projects on our own. Kailangan may go signal and clearance from PATAFA. And kailangan ‘yong PATAFA will contact the international federation to make sure na pasok sa standards for international competitions,” he said.

According to Gregorio, PATAFA, led by president Terry Capistrano, has already started its inspection two weeks ago ahead of the rehabilitation project.

“Hopefully (after the rehabilitation), we can do more hostings in Philsports,” Gregorio said.

The PSC chief also shared that they are ramping up their efforts with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) to build more sports facilities within New Clark City that is serving as a premier sports hub for elite and grassroots athletes.

The New Clark City, which houses a world-class athletics stadium, is set to host the Asian U18 Athletics Championships in April next year.

Alas Pilipinas settles for 8th after straight-set loss to Iran C

ANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur—Alas Pilipinas wrapped up its campaign in the AVC Women’s Cup on a heartbreaking note after bowing to Iran in straight sets, 25-21, 25-12, 25-21, in the battle for seventh place on Sunday at the Candon City Arena.

The Filipinas struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match and were unable to mount a sustained challenge against an Iranian side that controlled the contest from start to finish.

The setback relegated the hosts to eighth place, their lowest finish in the tournament in recent years after ending up seventh in the 2023 edition.

Iran leaned heavily on the firepower of Elaheh Poorsaleh Shahdehsari, who poured in 18 points and spearheaded the team’s decisive push, particularly

in the second and third frames.

The Iranians completed the victory in just 70 minutes.

Alas showed brief resistance late in the third set when veterans Jovelyn Gonzaga and Kyle Negrito helped erase a handful of match points.

Their rally narrowed the gap to 2421, but Gonzaga’s ensuing service error ended the contest.

Alyssa Solomon provided the biggest offensive spark for the Philippine side with 12 points, emerging

as the lone local player to score in double figures.

The national squad entered the competition under challenging circumstances.

BSP expected to raise interest rates this week

HE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is expected to raise its key interest rate on June 18 as policymakers balance persistent inflation risks and a weakening currency against slowing economic growth.

Most economists predict the BSP’s Monetary Board will deliver a 25-basis-point hike, but several analysts said a larger 50-basis-point increase is necessary to anchor price expectations.

The BSP raised its benchmark policy rate by 25 basis points to 4.50 percent on April 23, citing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Recent data show the Philippine economy slowed to a five-year low of 2.8 percent in the first quarter of 2026, while inflation eased to 6.8 percent in May from 7.2 percent in April.

Reyes Tacandong & Co. senior adviser Jonathan Ravelas expects a 25-basis-point rate hike because underlying pressures from food, global

commodities and currency dynamics still persist despite the weaker May inflation print.

Metrobank chief economist Nicholas Mapa and University of Asia and the Pacific professor emeritus Bernardo Villegas also pencilled in a 25-basis-point rate hike, describing the move as a strategy to fight inflation.

Security Bank chief economist Angelo Taningco also pegged a 25-basispoint increase this week and expects another quarter-point hike in August.

Taningco said the main drivers to this outlook include the above-target inflation print amid a weaker peso, slow gross domestic product growth and rising household and corporate

debt together with bad loans.

Union Bank of the Philippines chief economist Ruben Carlo Asuncion forecast a 25-basis-point rate hike amid more persistent price dynamics, but he noted that central bank officials may still consider a larger 50 basis point rate hike.

Other analysts believe the BSP should take more aggressive action because the May inflation reading of 6.8 percent remains well above the BSP target band of 2 percent to 4 percent.

Bank of the Philippine Islands lead economist Emilio Neri Jr. said the BSP will likely raise policy rates by 50 basis points to catch up with inflation and reinforce its commitment to price stability.

Neri said the softer May inflation print should be viewed less as an opportunity to delay further tightening.

“Acting forcefully now with a substantial rate hike may allow the central bank to avoid off-cycle rate hikes that could be more disruptive,” Neri said.

THE majority bloc of the Lopez family criticized First Gen Corp. chief executive Federico “Piki” Lopez for pursuing legal action against his cousins while publicly expressing hopes for reconciliation amid an ongoing corporate dispute.

The Lopez family majority said in a statement the actions of Piki Lopez contradicted his calls for peace after learning that he had filed complaints for indirect contempt against several family members on May 28. This occurred on the same day he spoke of reconciliation during the First Gen annual stockholders’ meeting.

“What he says and what he does are two different things,” the family majority said. The group said it received copies of the complaints on Tuesday.

According to the majority bloc, Lopez had expressed hope for peace within the family during the stockholders’ meeting, but later that day he filed the contempt complaints against his cousins.

DOE to auction Semirara coal blocks with in 2 months THE Department of Energy said it will open the bidding for the Semirara Island coal blocks in Antique province within the next two months as the current operator’s contract nears its legal expiration limit.

The agency launched the 2026 Philippine Conventional Energy Contracting Program for coal following a Department of Justice ruling that blocks the extension of the current agreement beyond 50 years. Semirara Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC) holds the existing contract, which expires in July 2027.

“I think next year is the expiration date [of the contract]. We’re targeting the submission for the bidding probably in the middle of the year. Probably around July or August,” Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said on the sidelines of a Management Association of the Philippines energy forum.

The upcoming auction features 10 blocks on Semirara Island spanning 10,000 hectares and holding an estimated 160 million metric tons of coal reserves.

The government aims to run a transparent and competitive framework that evaluates proponents on technical capability, financial capacity, work programs, safety standards and environmental safeguards.

Officials had previously deferred the submission and opening of bid documents, but a new schedule is now moving forward.

DA eyes higher corn import quota to ease feed costs

THE Department of Agriculture is seeking to more than double the Philippines’ minimum access volume for corn to 500,000 metric tons to shield livestock and poultry producers from rising feed costs and potential supply disruptions.

The proposal, which has been submitted to the MAV management committee for endorsement to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, aims to secure adequate feed grain supplies and temper food inflation.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr said the agency endorsed the increase to anticipate supply tightness caused by weather-related risks and escalating production costs. He said that fertilizer and logistics expenses remain vulnerable to disruptions from the lingering conflict in the Middle East.

DOE aims to award Agus-Pulangi by December THE government hopes to award the rehabilitation contract for the Agus-Pulangi Hydropower Plant Complex in Mindanao by December 2026, targeting a phased rollout starting in 2028, energy officials said.

The Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) will proceed with negotiations with an interested energy company following the board’s approval of the final terms of reference presented by its transaction advisor. The project falls under the country’s publicprivate partnership program and currently awaits approval from the PPP Center.

“Whatever the PPP Center decides, whether it will be covered or not, it will be returned to PSALM to proceed,” Department of Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan said.

“We hope to proceed by December. It will be awarded,” he said.

Officials expect the multi-year rehabilitation to finish between 2028 and 2032 through a stepby-step process designed to prevent any disruptions to power generation in the region.

“We don’t want the generation to be affected,” Marasigan said.

A GRADUATING business student once shared with us that being a professional means much more than simply acquiring technical skills. It involves nurturing self-awareness, building genuine connections, and settling into a stable sense of who you are within the industry.

That reflection stayed with us. It became the heart of a paper on identity formation and self-efficacy in business education published in Studies in Higher Education, which I co-authored with Anne Sophia Nicole Avenir, Brian Matthew de Ocampo, Christine Ortega, Juliana Santos, and Maricel Balatbat.

We asked a deceptively simple question: How do young people actually become professionals?

We searched for answers inside the Applied Corporate Management program at De La Salle University.

Established in 1996 in collaboration with the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, the program required students to complete three full-trimester internships totaling to 1,440 hours, about eight times what most business degrees require. Students shuttle between classroom and workplace again and again, and we interviewed 45 of them across every stage, along with alumni, faculty, and administrators.

One pattern surfaced clearly.

Confidence does not manifest in a single moment; it builds over time. A student who once froze in an executive meeting was, by her third internship, presenting strategic recommendations without flinching. The tasks never got easier, she told us. She had simply proven to herself, time and again, that she could adapt and learn.

Psychologists refer to this phenomenon as self-efficacy, the belief in one’s own capability. Our study found that it acts as a quiet engine of professional growth. When a client accepts your

recommendation, a shift occurs, and you cease to feel like a mere student playing a role.

Identity formation, we learned, takes several forms at once. Students are in a constant state of ‘becoming’, growing into the work. They are ‘aligning’ their personal values with workplace expectations. They are ‘exploring’ what kind of professional they hope to be.

And some are ‘struggling’, unable to reconcile the ideals taught in classrooms with the realities of the corporate world.

The story lacks neatness. Some of our highest achievers, the ones with top grades and esteemed positions, confessed they never truly felt like real professionals, only people skilled at meeting expectations. Others gained substantial confidence at smaller companies that handed them real responsibilities, far removed from any famous brand. Roughly one in five students ventured down an entirely different path.

These insights carry a lesson that reaches well beyond one program. Decent work, highlighted in SDG 8, begins long before a first paycheck. It begins with the internship experience. When companies treat interns as cheap labor saddled with menial tasks, their professional identities wither; conversely, when they provide meaningful work and honest mentoring, young people flourish.

Attention must also be given to wellbeing. The constant switching between being a student and being a professional exhausted some participants, and a few felt isolated, convinced something was wrong with them because the transitions felt so hard. Identity formation is an emotional labor, and programs that overlook this reality leave students to cope alone.

A quieter warning echoes through our findings as well. The pressure to secure internships at renowned companies

pushed some students to doubt their selfworth when they did not fit the anticipated standard. This dynamic transformed classmates into rivals. It also narrowed the futures students felt empowered to envision, as most alumni followed similar routes toward consulting or multinational corporations, depriving those interested in social enterprise or entrepreneurship of role models.

So, what insights should educators glean from these observations?

Programs that weave workplace learning into their curricula should build flexible support that bends to each student’s individual pace. They should value the quality of an internship over its reputation. They should open up opportunities for students to engage in collective reflection, turning confusing transitions into shared learning. And they should invite alumni from diverse career paths, affirming that there is more than one honorable way to succeed.

Partnerships, which is SDG 17, make all of this possible. The bond between universities and industry pays off only when both sides commit to genuine development, rather than merely successful careers.

The journey to becoming a professional is slow, uneven, and deeply personal work. Our students taught us that the harm is not to manufacture identical graduates. It is to prepare young people for meaningful professional lives, not simply lucrative careers.

Daiichi Properties sets new benchmark for office sustainability FOR years, green building certifications have largely focused on how properties are designed and constructed. Increasingly, however, attention is shifting to how buildings perform long after they are completed.

This trend is reflected in the latest achievement of Daiichi Properties, which recently secured Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Operations and Maintenance certifications for three of its office buildings in Bonifacio Global City.

The milestone is notable for the Philippine office sector. The Finance Centre on 26th Street became the first office building in the country to receive a LEED O+M Platinum certification, the highest rating under the globally recognized green building standard. It is also only the second office building in Southeast Asia to earn the distinction.

World Plaza on 5th Avenue also received a LEED O+M Platinum certification, while One World Place on 32nd Street earned LEED O+M

Gold status, improving from its previous LEED Core and Shell Silver certification.

Unlike certifications that focus on a building’s design and construction, LEED Operations and Maintenance evaluates how a property is managed on a daily basis. Areas assessed include energy and water efficiency, waste management, indoor environmental quality and overall operational performance.

The recognition reflects years of investment in building systems, maintenance programs and sustainability initiatives aimed at improving workplace environments while reducing environmental impact.

For office tenants, these measures can translate into lower resource consumption, improved indoor air quality and more efficient building services.

The achievement also comes as sustainability considerations become increasingly important for occupiers. Many multinational companies now include environmental targets in their

business strategies, prompting greater demand for office spaces that support these goals.

“This milestone is especially meaningful for us because it reflects the care and intention we put into our buildings every single day, not only in how they are designed, but in how people experience them,” said Daiichi Properties president and chief operating officer Charmaine C. Uy. “Becoming the first office building in the Philippines to achieve LEED O+M Platinum is an honor we share with our tenants, partners and teams who have been part of this journey,” she added.

For Daiichi Properties, the latest recognitions form part of a broader effort to build and manage offices that remain relevant as tenant expectations evolve. As companies place greater emphasis on sustainability, wellness and resource efficiency, operational performance is becoming an increasingly important measure of a building’s value.

Y first-ever trip out of the country was when I was still in high school, and that was to San Francisco. This is the reason why, throughout the years, until now, the city holds a very special place in my heart.

Traveling alone at 13, I was pleasantly overwhelmed by everything new around me: new sights, new ideas, new surroundings, new people. The trip was my late aunt’s birthday gift to me. She was my mother’s elder sister, and she lived with her children in Oakland, which is right beside San Francisco. You can imagine what the amazing sights and sounds of the city did to me, a first-time international traveler who was just a high school freshman.

Although I went to medical school after graduating from college, that first trip abroad, on top of the beautiful stories from friends working for international airline companies, helped me decide, later in my life, to go against my parents’ wishes and drop, cold turkey, my medical studies to find myself a spot in the tourism industry. The rest is now history.

Through the years, especially because I worked for Pan Am, then Thai Airways, and later for Northwest Airlines, I’d make it a point to visit this alluring “City by the Bay.” Each time, I would reminisce about what made the city special to me and relive the enchantment I had many decades ago as a first-time visitor.

Of course, a part of me always gets left behind every time I leave San Francisco.

It had been more than 40 years since my last visit, which is why I was ecstatic when a business trip required me to be in the city for a meeting with leaders of the Filipino community in the Bay Area. Since the morning meeting ended after lunch, I had time to visit my favorite sites, those where my cousins brought me on my first visit, and relive the delightful feeling I had then.

Sydney feels like a cool reset button when the Philippines is deep in heat and humidity. While Manila swelters, the Australian city slips into winter, with crisp air, light jackets, and slower, cozier days.

Any San Francisco visit is never complete without a stopover at Golden Gate Bridge Park to marvel at the iconic 1.7-mile suspension bridge that connects the city to Marin County.

This globally recognized symbol of the city, completed in 1937, is a masterwork of Art Deco styling and is a favorite backdrop in many movies and TV shows.

Lombard Street is known as the “Crookedest Street in the World” because of its hairpin turns on a steep, 27-degree incline. I told the Uber driver to drive down the street and drop me off at the bottom so I could take a photo of the other cars winding their way down the steep incline. And I did. After taking some photos, I noticed on a street corner an unusual lamp post covered with what looked like blotches of various colors. Sydney beckons A winter escape from Manila’s sweltering heat

A trip to Sydney offers Filipinos a change of pace from Manila’s heat, with cooler weather and easy access to the city’s waterfront landmarks

My last stop, the most important, was Union Square. This plaza in the heart of downtown carries three significant factors that made my first visit to the city an enchanting experience.

First, the poetic vista of cable cars running up and down Powell Street beside the square gives me that romantic feeling about the city, as I savor the lyrics of the song, “…high on a hill it calls to me, to be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars…”.

Second, the former St. Francis Hotel facing Union Square, now the Westin St. Francis, gave me my first taste of a job, as I worked part-time in the tour office located in its lobby, thanks to the Filipino owner who was a friend of my late aunt. Sadly, that office is no longer there. Third, the first honest-to-goodness real shopping I ever did, with some money I got as birthday gifts, was at Macy’s flagship store fronting Union Square.

These and more always make my San Francisco visits a beautiful and delightful experience. Needless to say, this one was no exception. Of course, another emotional experience transpired, and I couldn’t help it.

Once again, “I left my heart…”
