Pentagon sounds alarm on China military buildup Beijing hits Manila-Tokyo ‘illegal’ sea border talks
S
INGAPORE – Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth struck a measured tone towards China at a major defense forum on Saturday, noting “rightful alarm” over Beijing’s military build-up but saying the United States sought a “stable equilibrium” in Asia. Hegseth’s headline speech at Singapore’s Shangri-La Dialogue, which brings together top defense officials and experts from about 45 countries, contrasted with his strongly confrontational remarks on China at last year’s gathering. Unlike Beijing, which has sent a panel of military experts and scholars instead of Defense Min-
TREATY ALLIES. Defense Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth meet on the sidelines of the IISS ShangriLa Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, reaffirming the enduring Philippines-US alliance as both countries mark the 75th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty. The two countries also renewed the Communications Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMOA) for another 15 years, strengthening interoperability, secure communications, and cooperation in critical defense domains. event that provides chances for both open debate and behind-closeddoors diplomacy. “When we look across the region today, there is rightful alarm regarding China’s historic military build-up and the expansion of its military activities in the region and beyond,” Hegseth said. Washington does not seek “needless confrontation in the region”, but rather “a genuinely stable equilibrium (in Asia) that works for Americans as well as our allies,” he said. That means “a favorable but durable balance of power in which no state, including China, can impose its hegemony and hold the security or prosperity of our nation and our allies in question,” he added. Trillanes vows ‘explosive’ testimony for VP impeach trial By Rex Espiritu and Maricel V. Cruz FORMER senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Saturday said he is prepared to deliver a potentially “explosive” testimony during the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Trillanes is among the witnesses expected to be presented by the prosecution in the impeachment proceedings against Duterte. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Trillanes said his testimony
would build on statements he previously made during an April hearing of the House Committee on Justice. “My testimony will be similar to what I’ve already said during the April hearing, but I will add to it and I think some of the details will shock our k ababayan and help them make the decision that Sara should no longer stay as Vice President,” he said. Trillanes previously told the House justice panel that Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, have joint bank accounts containing over P111 million as of April 2016. He claimed the funds in the back accounts were linked to transactions with alleged drug personalities. This prompted Carpio to file a perjury complaint against the former senator, insisting that the

mended filing two counts of qualified sex trafficking against Meloto after finding prima facie evidence. According to the DOJ National Prosecution Service resolution, two male complainants, who were former beneficiaries of Gawad Kalinga’s School for Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development, came forward with allegations that Meloto abused his authority over them during that time. This included alleged sexual abuse and other coercive acts, which Meloto has since denied. Turn to A4
