ORMER Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) engineer Henry Alcantara has turned around and moved for the dismissal of the cases regarding his involvement in alleged irregularities in flood control projects in Bulacan. According to a report by Bilyonaryo News Channel on January 9, Alcantara filed the counter-affidavit on January 5, arguing that there is insufficient evidence to support the allegations. “There is no evidence that I favored any contractor, employee or individual. There is no witness that states I approved irregular payments or instructed preparation of falsified reports,” his affidavit said. Alcantara further contended that he was kept in the dark due to the deliberate concealment of information by other DPWH employees regarding the anomalous flood control projects in Bulacan. “In this case, no witness has testified that I facilitated any payouts,” he Next page added.

Eala powers through ex-tormentor, clinches semis slot By Peter Atencio YOUTH prevailed over experience this time as the Philippines' Alexandra Eala pulled off a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against her former tormentor Magda Linette on Friday in the ASB Classic 2026 in Auckland, Zealand. The seasoned Linette, 31, felt the power of Eala’s vastly improved fore-

I’m happy with how I handled the external factors, the wind, and playing Magda has always been difficult for me. She’s a very solid player, very consistent,” said the 20-year-old Eala, whose current ranking of no. 53 in the World Tennis Association is

bound to jump several places in the 40s following three successive wins in the Auckland tournament. “Winning three matches does help your morale, yes,” said Eala. The win put Eala in the semifinals against Chinese pro Wang Xinyu, who prevailed after her clash with Britain’s Francesca Jones ended in retirement. Next page

DepEd, MIT team up for AI-ready curriculum By Charles Dantes and Rolando Ng III

F

ROM interactive digital materials to gamified learning tools, the country is set to usher in a new era in AIintegrated curriculum with the launch of Project Accelerating Governance and Adaptive Pedagogy through Artificial Intelligence (AGAP.AI). AGAP.AI—pronounced as ‘agapay,’ a Filipino word which means support or assistance — is a nationwide program aimed at integrating AI into public education and school governance. “This is what we are trying to do today, standing next to our people and bridging the gap between technology and education,” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said during yesterday's national kick-off ceremony held at Quezon City Science High School. "AI is shaping the way that we communicate and the way that we solve everyday problems. Our responsibility now is to ensure that our students use AI confidently and ethically, enabling them to stay ahead in this learning journey that they are going through," Mr. Marcos added. Under the initiative, the Department of Education will draft the Foundational Guidelines on AI in Basic Education, which the President described as the country’s first national

Angara: ES belied rumors of looming Cabinet reshuffle EDUCATION Secretary Sonny Angara on Friday denied rumors of a supposed revamp of as many as nine departments in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Cabinet, citing information from fellow officials. Angara however said he hoped he would not be included in any revamp and appreciated the recent statement of Palace spokesperson Claire Castro that there would be no such upheaval in the second half of Mr. Marcos’ term. This comes a day after Malacanang also denied reports that Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco would be replaced by Capt. Stanley Ng, president of Philippine Airlines. Ng was among a list of personalities listed by veteran columnist Ramon Tulfo as “probably new members of the Cabinet,” including stem cell therapy expert Dr. Ronald Rigor for the Department of Health vice Secretary Ted Herbosa, and Jose Francisco Benitez for the Department of Education -- replacing Angara. Tulfo added that Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling of the Department of Housing and Urban Development would be moved to the Department of Public Works and Highways to bump off incumbent Secretary Vince Dizon, who would supposedly move back to his former post at the Department of Transportation. None of the current secretaries mentioned have confirmed or denied the reports at press time. While he was unable to talk to the President about it, Angara said Executive Secretary Ralph Recto and Presidential Management Staff Secretary Elaine Masukat told him there was no impending overhaul. “Kay ES [Executive Secretary], sinabi sa ‘kin ni ES na wala naman, saka si PMS [Presidential Management Staff] Secretary, sinabi rin sa’kin na wala naman,” he told ABSCBN News. (The ES, ES told me there was nothing, and the PMS Secretary also told me there was nothing). Asked about the so-called “Unlucky 9” in a Politiko.com.ph report that claimed at least nine officials could be affected by a revamp, the Education chief said: “Wala naman daw. Abangan na lang, abangan. (There is nothing, let’s just wait for it.)” In the fallout of the recent ghost projects and contractors’ scandal, Recto moved last month from the Department of Finance to replace thenExecutive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, while Department of Budget Secretary Amina Pangandaman yielded her seat to Rolando Toledo. Frederick Go then took Recto’s place at the Finance department. According to the reports referring to the “unlucky 9,” the other departments under review are Foreign Affairs, Transportation, Information and Communications Technology, the Department of Economy, Planning and Development (formerly NEDA), and the Bureau of Customs.

framework governing the ethical and responsible use of AI in schools. The Department of Education partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) through its Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education (RAISE) initiative which also helped develop the Day of AI Australia program. MIT RAISE will help design AIintegrated learning materials, develop teacher training modules, and embed responsible and ethical AI concepts into the basic education curriculum. Through these partnerships, DepEd aims to strengthen students' understanding of digital ethics, data privacy, and critical thinking, Secretary Sonny Angara said. Educators will also receive training on how AI can support lesson planning, student assessment, and administrative processes. “There are three impacts here: for the department, our decisions will become more efficient and data-based;

The day-long procession began before dawn, with barefoot volunteers pulling the heavy carriage through narrow streets where the devout waited in hopes of touching the icon, believed to hold miraculous powers. Thousands of police were deployed to manage crowds that officials believe could number in the millions by the time the statue reaches its home in central Manila's Quiapo church around midnight. More than 800 people had sought medical attention along the cloudy but humid parade route by early afternoon. Agence France Presse (AFP) journalists saw at least four gurneys being pushed through the thick crowds. One man, a local photojournalist, died of an apparent heart attack while covering the event, according to the Presidential Task Force on Media Security. for our learners, their knowledge will advance—but again, we shouldn’t forget the fundamental skills outside of AI, like reading and critical thinking—and third, for our teachers, the time they spend preparing lesson plans will be reduced,” Angara said. Project AGAP.AI aims to reach around 1.5 million learners and teachers across the country through its AI Ready ASEAN Philippines training program. The initiative is funded by the ASEAN Foundation, headed by Dr. Piti Srisangnam, with additional support from Google. Angara said the Marcos administration’s thrust towards integrating AI into its overall education policy has already been included in the P1.05-trillion allocation of DepEd in the 2026 national budget. Mr. Marcos, however, cautioned students against treating AI as a substitute for effort and discipline, saying technology should support, not replace, learning and critical thinking. "There are still some things technology cannot do for us. Technology cannot replace discipline. It cannot replace effort. It cannot replace the habit of showing up prepared and ready to learn. It cannot replace hard work," he said. According to the President, as ASEAN chair this year, the Philippines is also pushing for a harmo-

nized, human-centered AI ecosystem in Southeast Asia, focusing on agriculture, finance, health care, manufacturing and education. Angara echoed President Marcos’ position that AI must be used ethically and should not replace genuine learning. "AI should not replace hard work, actual studying, and reading,” the DepEd chief said. Angara said the department is targeting the release of AI-focused in-service training (INSET) modules by the second quarter of the year. The modules would promote responsible AI use, digital innovation, and 21st-century pedagogical practices in the classroom, he said. Governments worldwide have been rewiring their education systems to equip students with the necessary skills and critical thinking in an algorithmic world. In September, China integrated AI into the national curriculum, making it a compulsory subject for all students at primary and secondary school level. South Korea rolled out in March AI-powered digital textbooks for math, English, and computing for primary and secondary education, while Hong Kong, as early as 2023, has mandated 10 to 14 hours of AI education for junior secondary school students.

“Bong” Revilla Jr., and resigned Ako Bicol representative Zaldy Co. He said proponents get 25 to 30 percent of the proposed insertions. Regarding the malversation of public funds, the former DPWH executive stated that he neither authorized nor participated in the creation of ghost projects, reiterating that his fellow employees hid these activities from him.

He also denied any allegations of direct bribery or involvement in the alleged bid-rigging of procurement processes in DPWH projects, emphasizing that such matters did not fall within his responsibilities as a district engineer. To recall, Alcantara turned over a total of P110 million in cash that he admitted to illegally obtaining from flood control projects.

deadly typhoons, earthquakes and a high-level corruption scandal that has rocked the archipelago nation of 116 million people. "For this year, my wish is for the (political) system in the Philippines to change and for the corrupt people to disappear from the face of the Earth," Manila resident Jose Borbon, a 23-year-old who drives a horse carriage for tourists, told AFP. "Nothing is impossible if you pray to him," he said. 'Shame on you' Scores of politicians and officials have been implicated in a scandal over "ghost" flood-control projects that purportedly cost taxpayers billions of dollars but were either never built or shoddily constructed. Bishop Rufino Sescon called on those involved to stand down during a homily before Friday's procession began. "In our country today, some people refuse to step down despite having done bad things or become deadweights, or made the poor suffer, even though the country is drowning in

floods," Sescon said. "Shame on you. Please step down for the people's sake." The annual religious parade commemorates the arrival of the wooden statue of Christ from Mexico in the early 1600s. Many believe the statue got its dark colour when it survived a fire aboard the Spanish ship that carried it to the Philippines, leading to it being known colloquially as the "Black Nazarene." At one intersection, AFP journalists saw devotees clamber over a shipping container being used to block a street leading to the parade route. Gerry Asuncion, 62, a traffic officer in a Manila suburb, took two days off along with many of his co-workers to be at the parade. "We were poor once, but I have achieved all my dreams—a car, a good family, a house... My children are healthy and we never want for anything. Each Friday, I go to Quiapo Church to pray and give thanks," he told AFP. Vince Lopez, Pot Chavez, Rex Espiritu with AFP

The seventh-seeded Wang, who will soon be in Manila for the Philippine Women’s Open WTA 125 netfest, was leading, 6-4 4-3, when Jones called it a day due to a leg injury. “I think every match presents its own unique set of challenges, but I definitely do see improvement from last season,” said Eala. Linette’s vast experience saw her reaching eight finals on the WTA Tour, to win three titles, to go with the semifinals of the 2023 Australian Open, as well. Eala’s side-to-side baseline attacks put the world no. 53 Linette out of position for most of the first set. With the count tied at 2-all, Eala picked up momentum, after holding serve in the fifth game, breaking serve in the sixth when Linette committed a net error, while rushing forward to attack, 4-2. Her service winner in the seventh game allowed her to come close to getting the first set at 5-2.

After Eala took the first set off Linette’s out-of-bounds return in the final game, momentum swung in the Filipina sensation’s favor. Eala raced to a 4-0 lead, before Linette managed to get two game points. In two previous clashes, Linette had won both matches in straight sets, first in 2024 at the Abu Dhabi Open, with a 7-6, 6-1 win in the Round of 32, and then in the 2025 Nottingham Open, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the first round. Eala’s doubles' teammate Iva Jovic also reached the semis, after enduring a close match with Belgian Sofia Costoulas, for a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win. Later in the day though, a visibly tired Eala and Jovic fell in the women's doubles to the Chinese pair of Xu Yi Fan and Yang Zhaoxuan, 7-5, 6-3. Xu and Yang took 86 minutes to get past Eala and Jovic, and make it to the finals against Han Yu Go and French netter Kristina Mladenovic. Han and Mladenovic reached the finals after they won by default over American Cathy McNally and Indonesian Janice Tjen.

the scene to extract the trapped workers. “We are closely monitoring the situation and will conduct an investigation into the cause of the collapse,” Archival said and urged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to take decisive action on complaints raised by local government units regarding the landfill's safety and environmental concerns. It can be recalled that local residents and workers have expressed concerns over the landfill's safety, citing its history of complaints and the risk of collapse. The incident today has raised questions about the continued operation of the landfill, with some calling for its closure.

PCOL George Ylanan, CPPO Officer-in-Charge told the media that the priority at this time is the safety and rescue of those who are still missing. All available PNP units with its partner agencies, are working continuously and exerting maximum effort to locate and assist the victims. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and assure the public that we will not stop until all missing persons are accounted for. We urge the public to remain calm, avoid the affected area to give way to emergency responders, and rely only on verified information from official sources,” Ylanan added.

Sotto: Bato may be compelled to attend sessions By Ram Superable SENATE President Vicente Sotto III on Friday said that Senator Ronald dela Rosa—who is in hiding amid a reported international warrant against him— could be compelled to attend sessions, including through an arrest order, if his vote would be critical to the chamber. “Our rules state that when there is a vote and your vote is important, or it is important that everyone votes… the Senate President can order a senator to be brought in or arrested to cast their vote,” he explained. Sotto clarified that this rule applies only when a senator’s presence is essential to pass legislation or settle key matters in the Senate. Dela Rosa has been absent from Senate sessions since Nov. 11, 2025, after reports that the International Criminal Court allegedly issued a warrant against him over the bloody war on drugs during the previous administration. Dela Rosa presided over the antidrug campaign of the Duterte administration as the chief of the Philippine National Police at the time. He was elected to the Senate in 2019 and won reelection last year. Despite his absence, Sotto said Dela Rosa’s Senate office continues to operate and carry out official duties, with his personal social media page showing activity as recently as Dec. 16, 2025. The Senate President said he sent multiple texts and made calls to Dela Rosa since late last year but received no replies. Sotto’s last message concerned Dela Rosa’s role in the bicameral conference committee on the 2026 national budget, where the senator serves as vice chairman of the Senate finance panel. “To each his own… that’s how it is. He chooses not to come in, but his office is still functioning,” said Sotto, pointing out that no current measure has yet required Dela Rosa’s vote. Previously, Sotto confirmed that dela Rosa continues to receive his salary despite his absence, noting that lawmakers are not covered by any “no work, no pay” rule and that the amount has already been allotted under the national budget. The Senate leader also said he does not see the need to amend the chamber’s rules to cover prolonged absences, noting that this has always been the practice in past Congresses. Instead, Sotto said the public may file an ethics complaint if they wish to question a lawmaker’s conduct. Under the government’s compensation system, senators stand to earn at least P293,191 monthly or about P3.52 million annually under Salary Grade 31, with potential for increases. Senators also receive various allowances for committee responsibilities and their other duties. This is in line with the Senate’s practice of compensating its lawmakers even in absentia, such as in the cases of Senators Panfilo Lacson, Antonio Trillanes IV, and Leila de Lima. In his previous term as senator, Lacson received his salary and benefits from January 2010 -- when he famously went into hiding when he was accused of the murder of publicist Salvador Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito—until September that year. That was due to the Commission on Audit pressuring the Senate to stop all payments to Lacson’s office, as it questioned the expenses incurred by his office, particularly the disbursements made without his signed authorization during his time as a fugitive. At the time, Lacson’s office reportedly received P2 million a month as its budget, while the senator received P36,000 a month in salary. In Trillanes’ case, he had never stepped into the Senate since he was elected in May of 2007, as he was detained for his involvement in the 2003 Oakwood Mutiny and the Manila Peninsula siege of 2007. Though detained, Trillanes was still allowed to sign all disbursements relating to his office. Similarly, De Lima, who was imprisoned in 2017 under the Duterte regime on drug-trafficking charges but later exonerated, received her full salary and benefits until the end of her Senate term in 2022. She was elected to the House of Representatives last year through the Mamamayang Liberal Party-List.

Corruption ‘widespread’—survey By Katrina Manubay

N

EARLY all Filipino adults (94 percent) believe corruption in government is widespread, with large majorities (71 percent) describing it as “very widespread,” according to a Pulse Asia survey. The latest Ulat ng Bayan survey, results held September to December 2025, the percentage of those who consider corruption in the Philippine government to be very widespread decreased at -7 percentage points. The perception of corruption varies across different regions, with Metro Manila and the Visayas reporting the highest belief in widespread corruption

at 96 percent, followed by Mindanao at 94 percet, and Balance Luzon, which recorded the lowest at 93 percent. Pulse Asia noted minimal changes in public opinion on this issue from September to December 2025. The only significant movements were a decrease in the percentages of people who believe corruption is very widespread, both overall in the Philip-

pines (down by 7 percentage points) and specifically in the Visayas (down by 12 percentage points), Mindanao (down by 15 percentage points), and among Class C respondents (down by 18 percentage points). The survey also revealed that a significant majority of Filipino adults (74percent) consider accepting or giving bribes as corrupt whether these take place in the public or private setting. Among seven actions evaluated, majorities identified the following as corrupt: accepting or giving bribes (74percent), misusing public funds or company resources (66%), and offering or receiving kickbacks (64 percent). At the national level, other actions considered corrupt by Filipino adults

Sotto dismisses Imee raps on budget use to impeach VP Duterte SENATE President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III on Friday described as “unfair and baseless” the allegation of Senator Imee Marcos that maneuverings in the 2026 national budget could be used to propel another impeachment bid against Vice President Sara Duterte. According to Sotto, financial aid under the 2026 budget cannot be “dangled” on the lawmakers to push for Duterte’s impeachment as the 2026 General Ap-

propriations Act (GAA) already features the “Anti-Epal” provision. “No, I don’t think so, it’s not possible. Her accusations are unfair and baseless,” Sotto said. “I cannot understand how could that happen. You cannot dangle the funds over the politicians. No such thing,” the Senate President said. Senator Marcos had alleged that the 2026 General Appropriations Act

include evading taxes or regulatory requirements (42 percent), insider trading or financial fraud (42 percent), nepotism or favoritism in hiring or promotions (39 percent), and the non-disclosure of conflicts of interest (21 percent). However, non-disclosure of conflicts of interest is the least frequently mentioned corrupt action across different regions and social classes, ranging from 12 percent to 28 percent, respectively. Pulse Asia highlighted that two significant overall changes were a decline in the percentage of individuals who view non-disclosure of conflicts of interest (down by 6 percentage points) and insider trading or financial fraud (down by 7 percentage points) as corrupt acts.

(GAA), which was recently signed by her brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., was not a developmental budget but a “political” budget. She claimed that the 2026 budget was chopped into pieces to initiate fresh impeachment plans against Duterte. A new impeachment complaint may be filed against the Vice President in February, the senator pointed out, in time for the end of the mandated one-year ban on

such complaints. She raised concerns about the alleged “soft pork” in the 2026 budget that may come from financial assistance programs of the government such as the Medical Assistance to Indigent and Financially Incapacitated Patients (MAIFIP) and Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS). However, Sotto maintained that the Senate would not allow such to happen.

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday said it has suspended the confiscation of driver’s license involving traffic violations and has also placed the policy under review. In a statement, Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said he has instructed the Land Transportation Office “to immediately suspend the confiscation of driver’s license in apprehension cases involving traffic violations.” Lopez said the move aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to “streamline and clarify procedures in apprehending erring motorists whose driver’s licenses have been confiscated.” In a memorandum issued on January 9 that takes effect “immediately,” Lopez ordered the LTO to revisit issuances to ensure consistency across the government’s existing policies. The guidelines for settling traffic apprehension cases have also been amended by the transport chief by changing the period from 15 calendar days to 15 working days. This allows “both the government and the public sufficient time to resolve cases,” he said in the news release.

Alcala cleared on garlic import row By Maricel V. Cruz THE Sandiganbayan has dismissed for lack of evidence the graft charge filed against former Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Proceso Alcala in connection with the alleged manipulation of the garlic supply from 2010 to 2014. In a resolution issued Jan. 5, the anti-graft court’s Fifth Division granted the demurrer to evidence filed by Alcala. The anti-graft court only grants motion for leave of court to file demurrer to evidence only in cases where it believes there is not enough evidence to warrant conviction. Alcala and 23 others, including Bureau of Plant Industry former officials namely, Clarito Barron, Merle

Palacpac, Jesus Bajacan and Luben Marasigan, were charged with graft for the alleged violation of Sections 3(e) and 3(j) of Republic Act No. 3019, or the “Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.” Also charged were incorporators of the Vegetable Importers, Exporters and Vendors Association of the Philippines Inc. (Vieva). The prosecution alleged that the accused manipulated the supply that led to a surge in prices of garlic by controlling the importation permit. It said that that 5,022 of the 8,810 import permits issued from 2010 to 2014 went to Vieva and approved by Alcala, Barron, Palacpac, and Marasigan despite the existing suspension in the garlic importation. At the same time, the price of imported garlic reached P260 to P400 per kilo from January to July 2014.

HILIPPINE National Police supports having “more teeth” in sanctions for those engaged in online child-selling, PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. “The entire police force supports having more teeth in holding accountable the individuals involved in this kind of work,” he said. The PNP Women and Children’s Protection Center noted an increase in cases involving individuals selling children online in 2025, with eight people arrested last year for selling their newborns — up from five cases recorded in 2024.

PNP eyes higher penalties for babies for sale cases Nartatez affirmed the PNP’s commitment to strictly enforcing anti-trafficking laws to eradicate online child-selling, stressing the police force will hunt the persons involved in such illicit activities. The PNP can work with other agencies to address this issue, he added. Nartatez mentioned the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act and the Domestic Administrative Adoption and Alternative Child Care Act as legal frameworks to deal with offenders.

IN BRIEF DAR distributes e-land titles to Mimaropa farmers THE Department of Agrarian Reform has distributed electronic land titles (e-titles) to over 2,500 agrarian reform beneficiaries across the MIMAROPA region and freed the farmers from P45 million in land amortization debt during the simultaneous distribution of e-titles and certificates of condonation with release of mortgage (CoCRoMs). Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III said the region-wide initiative marked a significant step in strengthening land tenure security and easing the long-standing financial burden of farmers in Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Romblon and Palawan. The initiative is aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to hasten land tenure security and agrarian debt condonation nationwide, particularly in rural areas where farmers remain most vulnerable. Estrella said freeing farmers from debt while ensuring clear land ownership empowers them to invest with confidence, improve productivity, and fully reap the rewards of their hard work. Rio N. Araja

SC launches poster-making contest to mark anniversary THE Supreme Court on Friday announced the launch of a special poster-making contest in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the judiciary. “This nationwide contest is open to all currently enrolled students from Grades 1 to 6, with each school being allowed to submit only one entry... Each entry must be an original work created specifically for this contest. Participants should also prepare a title for their poster along with a short description of no more than 100 words explaining how the artwork reflects the contest theme,” the High Court said. Participants are tasked to create posters measuring 10 inches by 15 inches, in either portrait or landscape orientation. It may be produced using traditional materials such as crayons, colored pencils, oil pastels, or watercolor; through digital tools and applications; or by combining both methods in mixed media. He said the PNP would collaborate with social media platforms to address the problem. “If no one is held accountable for the syndicates involved in this activity, the number of cases of online child selling will only continue to increase,” Nartatez said. Earlier, the WCPC reported the arrest of a 17-year-old mother who allegedly sold her one-month-old baby for P55,000.

WCPC chief Brig. Gen. Maria Sheila Portento said police discovered the transaction through the teenager’s social media post advertising the child to potential buyers. Authorities arranged a meeting with the suspect at a fast-food restaurant in Quezon City last Tuesday, which led to her arrest. Pinoy injured in Switzerland fire gets medical assistance By Katrina Manubay THE Department of Foreign Affairs, through the Philippine Embassy in Berne, Switzerland, is facilitating medical assistance for a 16-yearold Filipino who was injured in the deadly New Year’s Day fire in Crans-Montana. In a statement Friday, the DFA identified the victim as Kean Kaisser Talingdan, who sustained severe burns in the incident. “Upon receipt of a request for assistance, the

Philippine Embassy in Berne on the same day coordinated with Swiss authorities to verify the minor’s condition and whereabouts and maintained communication with his mother,” the department said. The DFA also reported that it has collaborated with the Philippine Consulate General in Milan to ensure continuous consular assistance following Talingdan’s medical transfer to Italy, where he is currently receiving treatment. “As part of the Government’s efforts to

help distressed Filipinos abroad, the DFA is facilitating medical assistance from the Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) Fund to help address the minor’s medical needs,” the DFA added. The department pledged to remain ready to extend additional assistance as necessary. MARIKINA Rep. Miro Quimbo is seeking a congressional inquiry into the rising incidence of large-scale tobacco smuggling and its impact on public health and government revenues. In filing House Resolution 636, Quimbo cited the seizure of 32 trucks last January 1, 2026 carrying allegedly smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P2.6 billion. The Philippine National Police intercepted the trucks in coordinated operations in Batangas and Malabon. The lawmaker said the seizure confirms that organized cigarette smuggling remains a serious national problem that requires urgent action. Because smuggled goods avoid taxation, Quimbo, as chair of the House committee on ways and means, said the intercepted items correspond to P875.16 million in tax revenue that the government would otherwise have collected following the 2026 tax rate. In 2023, he said the Bureau of Internal Revenue reported that the government lost an estimated P25.5 billion in excise taxes due to illicit tobacco trade. The Marikeño lawmaker stressed that large-scale tobacco smuggling weakens both public health policy and tax enforcement by keeping cigarette prices artificially low and undermining the intent of sin tax reforms. Quimbo said if large-scale smuggling is not stopped, the price of cigarettes falls, as the stark price gap between legal and smuggled cigarettes waters down the effect of sin taxes and other health reforms the country has achieved so far.

THE Quezon City government has rolled out a new risk-based system for faster, smarter business permit processing under Executive Order No. 38 recently signed by Mayor Joy Belmonte. “This system helps us move faster for low-risk businesses and be more careful where it really matters,” Belmonte said in a statement. The new system classifies businesses as low-risk, medium-risk or high-risk based on the nature of their operations and their potential impact on public safety, health, and the environment. The risk classification is now the main basis for how fast business permits are processed and how inspections are scheduled, allowing the city government to move faster for simpler, low-risk businesses while giving more attention to higher-risk activities.

GUMIL Metro Manila at full throttle FROM up close, we see diverse literary writers in the metropolis, whose roots are from northern Philippines, now at full throttle as they get ready for their Diamond Jubilee, symbolizing the strength of their association. The cohesive association called GUMIL Metro Manila, whose members come from the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, the Cordilleras, and Central Luzon, will mark in December a major milestone of longevity, cultural endurance and lasting impact on the literary community and society. The group, now headed by Faye Flores-Melegrito of Caoayan, Ilocos Sur, a book translator, will once again launch at least two anthologies – one on poetry and another on short stories, each edited by three Ilokano writers. We feel close to the association, having been with the group since 1989, a score and three years after its founding in what was originally called the Greater Manila Area, with Dr. Hermogenes Belen of Naguilian, La Union, a professor at the old Philippine College of Arts and Trade as founding president. Since then, the group, under the umbrella association of GUMIL Filipinas, the association of Ilokano writers here and overseas, has had 17 presidents, two of whom are women, the first Eden Cachola-Bulong (2015-2018), a retired public school teacher from Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. Reaching 60 years in an era of rapid digital content consumption demonstrates the association’s resilience and the enduring power of storytelling and the written word. Undoubtedly, the December event provides an opportunity to honor the founders, authors, editors, and translators who have contributed over the decades, preserving a rich history and a body of work for future generations of Ilokanos and non-Ilokanos. The collective works produced over 60 years serve as a cultural artifact, reflecting societal changes, political upheavals, and technological revolutions.

Having been to all the anniversaries of GUMIL Metro Manila, which gifted us with four years of the presidency in the 1990s, we are persuaded the celebration can highlight how the association has addressed universal themes of identity, resilience, and transformation through literature.

The jubilee will be a moment to recognize the profound influence GMM has had on shaping social consciousness Admittedly, GMM has been a crucial bridge between generations linking past cultural moments and literary traditions with contemporary experiences and new perspectives, at the same time connecting established literary figures with emerging authors, fostering mentorship and community. We have no doubt the jubilee will be used to reaffirm the organization’s mandate and inspire new directions, with GMM strengthening its endorsement of webinars and other activities to explore new theoretical approaches, digital humanities, and new media, ensuring continued relevance in the 21st century. Positively, the jubilee will hopefully allow GMM to engage with a broad audience, including readers, enthusiasts, and educational institutions, strengthening the literary community and promoting the importance of literature in modern society. At the end of the day, the jubilee will be a moment to recognize the profound influence GMM has had on shaping social consciousness and enriching the intellectual life of its community and the Ilokano roots.

Give us this day our daily bread By Armenio Manuel OUR neighbor, who has had the iconic

yeast-raised bread – or pandesal – every day on his breakfast table has unleashed a tale about the dying breed of bakeries in the neighborhood, once competitive with each other with the scent of “malunggay pandesal” and others. Individual loaves are shaped by rolling the dough into long logs, or wooden sticks which are rolled in fine bread crumbs which are then portioned, allowed to rise, and baked. Today, some bakeries sell pandesal, often referred to as the quintessential bread roll of the Philippines, not only for breakfast but also as a snack at any time of the day. Pandesal accounts for about 50 percent of total bakery production in the Philippines, with the formulation consisting mainly of flour, water, sugar, fat, salt and yeast. Because the Philippines does not grow wheat and imports most of its supplies -- something that remains true today -- bakers had to turn to a more affordable version of flour, resulting in the soft, doughy bread recognized as pandesal today The slightly sweet bread, soft and fluffy and best enjoyed with salty cheese or peanut butter, has a light brown crust; slightly sweet aroma; soft, airy and chewy texture with a slightly crunchy crust; and contrary to its name, it is a little sweet rather than salty. It resembles the Puerto Rican bread, pan de agua and the Mexican bread, bolillo. In the 16th century, it was also called “the bread of the poor” because it was

an alternative to rice during the Philippine revolution. The anecdote goes that pandesal was originally to be modeled on French bread, the ancestor of French baguette, made from wheat flour, baker’s yeast, sugar, water and salt. Baking in the Philippines goes back to at least 1,000 years ago. Pies, and cakes, were prevalent in Europe during the 17th century. And, as the continent spread its reach across the seas, it brought the art of baking along with it.

Bakers used to bake bread using brick-lined wood-fired ovens Bakery experts say there are not many shops able to attract passers-by as much as bakeries, strictly based on the wonderful smell emanating from them, with the irresistible, almost magical perfume that owes this irresistible attraction to science. Bread is likely one of the simplest foods to prepare with simple rules to observe, a basic bread containing only four ingredients: water, flour, yeast and salt. These ingredients are mixed, with a gradual incorporation of water to the flour so as to obtain an elastic and homogeneous dough. Behind simple movements such as hands kneading and the pouring of clear water, hides the first secret of bread: flour. Flour contains two proteins in large ManilaStandard

Climate change: Critical global challenge

C

LIMATE change, or the Earth’s usual longterm weather patterns, has become a critical global challenge affecting every country, including the Philippines, and disrupting economies.

These weather patterns, like temperature and rainfall, are drivers in displacing communities, threatening human well-being and ecosystems worldwide. Climatologists say these are driven by human-caused greenhouse gas emissions which act like a “risk multiplier,” worsening existing issues and disproportionately harming vulnerable populations, requiring urgent global action to adapt and mitigate further warming. With climate change, weather patterns are shifting, getting warmer faster than ever before, mostly because humans are burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) which release heat-trapping gases (like carbon dioxide) that act like a blanket, making the planet hotter and causing more extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and stressed ecosystems. But we are gladdened the government is vigilant in standing up to this climate crisis which is severely affecting this country of more than 7,000 islands and 117 million people, making it one of the world’s most vulnerable countries due to its archipelagic nature and about 36,289-km-long coastlines. Reliance on natural resources has not been of help, and intensified typhoons, sea-level rise, droughts, disrupted agriculture, health risks, and

threats to food security, with millions already facing displacement and economic losses have been in the population’s eye range. Climate change has become a global challenge as it affects every continent, disrupting economies, food production with droughts and floods, and increasing risks to health, safety, and housing.

Initiatives focus on waste management, as the waste sector is a major source of methane emissions, projected to increase significantly with population growth” It has intensified storms, heatwaves, floods, and wildfires, causing widespread destruction and displacement while worsening ir quality, spreading diseases (malaria, dengue, Lyme), and increasing heat-related illnesses, undermining health progress. We are glad the government has not been intimidated by the challenges in climate change and gas emission

reduction, primarily in the areas of energy policies and infrastructure, limited financial capacity and technical expertise, and vulnerability to extreme weather events which often divert resources to adaptation and recovery efforts. It has introduced policies and programs, though their effectiveness is debated and implementation faces challenges. For instance, the Philippines has set a target for 30 percent of energy to come from renewables by 2030. But the country continues to rely heavily on coal and is increasing its use of imported liquefied natural gas as domestic gas supplies dwindle, raising concerns about locking in long-term fossil fuel dependence and stranded assets. A moratorium on new coal plants was introduced in 2020, but allowed previously approved projects to proceed. The country is also developing a National Plan on Short-Lived Climate Pollutants, which includes accelerating methane reductions in rice production. Initiatives also focus on waste management, as the waste sector is a major source of methane emissions, projected to increase significantly with population growth. Overall, while the Philippines has strong climate goals and is actively implementing various programs, achieving its ambitious reduction targets requires overcoming significant financial, political, and regulatory hurdles, including a faster transition away from fossil fuels.

‘Sever the chain’: Scam tycoons in China’s crosshairs BANGKOK – China is moving against the cyberscam tycoons making fortunes in Southeast Asia, driven by mounting public pressure and Beijing’s desire to keep control of judicial processes, analysts say. Across Southeast Asia, scammers lure internet users globally into fake romantic relationships and cryptocurrency investments. Initially largely targeting Chinese speakers -- from whom they have extracted billions, prompting rising public anger -- the scammers have expanded their operations into multiple languages to steal vast sums from victims around the world. Those conducting the scams are sometimes willing volunteers, sometimes trafficked foreign nationals who have been trapped and forced to work under threat of torture. Last year, a series of crackdowns largely driven by Beijing -- which wields significant economic and diplomatic influence in the region -- saw thousands of workers released from scam centers in Myanmar and Cambodia and repatriated to their home countries, many of them to China. Now Beijing has turned its focus to the bosses at the apex of the criminal pyramids, netting its biggest player so far with the arrest and extradition of Chen Zhi from Cambodia this week. The arrests were “almost certainly a result of Chinese pressure... coordinated behind closed doors”, according to Jason Tower, senior expert at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime. Chen, a Chinese-born businessman, was indicted in October by US authorities, who said his Prince Group conglomerate was a cover for a “sprawling cyber-fraud empire”. Phnom Penh said it detained him following a request from Beijing, and after “several months of joint investigative cooperation” with Chinese authorities.

Analysts say Phnom Penh’s inaction became intolerable to Beijing, which also wanted to avoid the embarrassment of Chen going on trial in the US. Jacob Sims, a transnational crime expert and visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Asia Center, added that Chen “has a number of reported ties to Chinese government officials.” “China acted in order to prevent him from being extradited to the US given the political sensitivities,” he told AFP. ‘Cut off the flow’ Beijing made a show of the tycoon’s extradition, with video released by China’s public security ministry on Thursday showing the 38-year-old in handcuffs with a black bag over his head being escorted off a plane with black-clad armed security forces waiting on the runway.

The sudden extradition of Chen from Cambodia –- where he had close ties to political elites before his naturalized citizenship was revoked by the Southeast Asian nation last month –- follows China scooping up other wanted fugitives abroad to mete out justice on its own soil. In November, She Zhijiang -- the Chinese-born founder of Yatai Group, which allegedly built a notorious scam hub on the Thai-Myanmar border –- boarded a flight to China in handcuffs after spending three years behind bars in Bangkok. The same month Beijing held talks with law enforcement agencies from Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam agreeing to “intensify joint efforts against transnational telecom and

online fraud”. China earlier publicly handed down death sentences to over a dozen members of powerful gang families with fraud operations in northern Myanmar, with their confessions of grisly crimes broadcast on national television. There could be more high-profile arrests to come: weeks ago the public security ministry issued arrest warrants for 100 more fugitives seen as the scam industry’s key financial backers, pledging Thursday to “cut off the flow”, “pull out the nails”, and “sever the chain”. But while the alleged leaders of some major scam groups have been arrested, Sims said the status quo for the wider industry was unlikely to change without sustained and “extremely high” pressure from the international community. “The vast majority of Cambodia’s hundreds of scam compounds are operating with strong support from the Cambodian government,” he said. Cambodian officials deny allegations of government involvement and say authorities are cracking down. Authorities had said in July that the tally of arrests had already reached 2,000. While in prison, She Zhijiang claimed to have previously acted as a spy for Beijing’s intelligence agency before he and his Myanmar urban development project were “betrayed” by the Chinese Communist Party. His lawyer told AFP that he had been pleading for Thai authorities to allow him to face trial in the US and said he feared “he will be deprived of due process” and “ultimately disappeared”. Some analysts pointed to limitations in China’s justice system that might prevent the full extent of the cyberscam schemes from being brought to light. “China is not an open society where investigation will reveal the true nature of things,” said Cambodian academic and former ambassador Pou Sothirak. AFP

quantities: glutenin and gliadin, which, together, produce the famous gluten. A good flour must contain at least 7 percent gluten but more is even better, according to bread experts. Now, the price of pandesal is rising – with the poor feeling the jab – no thanks to the Ukraine-Russia war which began in February, the invasion effectively denying the world almost a fifth of total world supply of wheat

which cannot keep up with regular demand. Some have observed that bakers used to bake bread using brick-lined wood-fired ovens. That was yesterday. Bakers have since shifted to diesel or LPG which means added cost – imposing additional costs from electricity and water which are ingredients in making bread. Now the bakers want to increase the

price of the Filipino daily bread, the pandesal, small and less tasty as ever, from P2 to P4 each roll. Without the increase, they might just have to close shop. And the ordinary man may have an empty breakfast table. (The author is a freelance writer who writes orations for necrological services as well as theses and dissertations for graduate students.)

Russia bombards Ukraine’s Kyiv K

YIV – Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s capital, setting apartment blocks alight and killing at least four people, Kyiv’s police said Friday after Moscow rejected the latest post-war peacekeeping plan.

FAR FROM ANY DEAL. Ukrainian rescuers work to extinguish a fire in a heavily damaged residential building following a Russian drone and missile attacks in Kyiv early Friday, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As diplomats wrangle for a breakthrough in what has been Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II, Russia has continued to press forward with its assault, bombarding Ukraine daily. In Kyiv, drone strikes across the city killed four people and wounded at least 24 others, including emergency rescuers, police said. AFP

Scores without power as storm pummels Europe LONDON – Fierce winds battered France and Britain on Friday as Storm Goretti barreled through northern Europe, cutting power to hundreds of thousands of households in plunging winter temperatures. Forecasters from Britain to Germany urged people to stay inside as they issued weather warnings, including the rare, highest-level red wind alert for the British Isles of Scilly and Cornwall in southwestern England. In France, some 380,000 households lost power, the vast majority in the northern Normandy region, the Enedis power provider said, while the BBC said some 65,000 households lost electricity in Britain. Overnight, wind gusts of 216 and 213 kilometers per hour were registered in France’s northwestern Manche region, authorities said. The squalls felled trees in several regions, with at least one crashing on residential buildings in France’s Seine-Maritime region, without injuries, authorities said. Gusts of up to 160 kilometers per hour were expected in parts of Britain and “very large waves will bring dangerous conditions to coastal areas”, Britain’s Met Office said. It also issued an amber snow warning in Wales, central England and parts of northern England, predicting snow of up to 30 centimeters in some areas. The UK’s National Rail has said train services will be affected over the next two days, and called on people to avoid travel unless necessary. Schools remained shut in northern France, where weather alerts have been issued in 30 other regions. “Take shelter and do not use your vehicle,” the Manche prefecture warned on X on Thursday, urging residents to prepare emergency lighting and a drinking water supply. Europe’s current extreme weather conditions have caused at least eight deaths, and on Thursday police in the Albanian city of Durres pulled a man’s body from floodwater following days of heavy snow and torrential rain across the Balkans. In Germany, heavy snow and winds in the north were set to affect schools, hospitals and transport links. AFP

Ukraine and its Western allies, scrambling to bring an end to the war as it approaches the four-year mark, agreed this week that Europe would deploy troops after any ceasefire. But Moscow, which says it launched its Feb. 2022 invasion in part to prevent an expansion of the NATO defense treaty, has repeatedly rejected the idea of any Western forces stationed in Ukraine. Such troops would be “considered legitimate military targets”, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned on Thursday, branding Ukraine and its American and European allies an “axis of war”. At a residential building on the city’s left bank, a medic was killed while responding to a strike as the site was hit a

second time. Some neighborhoods were plunged into darkness during what Mayor Vitali Klitschko described as a “massive enemy missile attack”. Across the border in Russia’s Belgorod, the governor said more than half a million people were without power or heating after a Ukrainian attack targeted the region’s utilities. Nearly 200,000 people were also cut off from water supplies, Vyacheslav Gladkov added. Ukraine’s military put the entire country on missile alert early Friday after confirming Russian bombers were airborne. In the western city of Lviv, the Ukrainian Air Force said a ballistic missile traveling at hypersonic speed struck “infrastructure facilities” just before midnight. It said the missile had been traveling at about 13,000 kilometers per hour. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy said it was up to the Ukrainian military to determine if a nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile had been used in the strike near the border with Poland. AFP

Woman slain leaves Minneapolis in shock

IN BRIEF

MINNEAPOLIS – The snow-lined street in the midwestern city of Minneapolis where Renee Nicole Good was gunned down by an immigration agent Wednesday lies less than a mile from the site of another slaying that shook Americans. In 2020, George Floyd was killed by a police officer in the same neighborhood, sparking a wave of Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests here and across the country, as the United States examined bias in law enforcement and generations of fractured race relations. But some now fear the act of protest itself, saying it has grown more dangerous under the Trump administration. “I’d like to, but it’s scary, you don’t want to get shot in the face,” 26-year-old Grace told AFP, adding: “I’m not surprised that they shot and killed someone here.”

SoKor’s Lee to visit Japan next week

“I went to a protest before Christmas, and I was very scared about even going to that, even before anyone was shot.” Grace said she joined BLM protests in the past and feared being tracked by the government then, but those concerns have grown “under this administration, where Trump just relentlessly pursues anyone in contrast to him.” What’s worse, some comments online “are horrific, people saying she deserved it,” Grace said. “I don’t know how we’re going to come back from this as a country.” Like many Minneapolis natives, 36-year-old Anthony Emanuel was deeply shaken when George Floyd, a Black man, was murdered by a white police officer who knelt on his neck. Floyd’s dying words -- “I can’t breathe” -- were chanted at protests across the

country, and Emanuel took part. But Emanuel, who works as a rideshare driver, is uncertain about protesting this time. “I think people are just tired. And I think people are tired and still figuring it out, still going to work... still behind on bills,” Emanuel said, citing political and financial pressures that only grow in hard economic times. “We’re still exhausted from George Floyd. We’ve still been rebuilding. And now another wave has come, and some people who had the energy don’t anymore.” The street where Good was killed, Portland Avenue, runs from downtown Minneapolis to its southern neighborhoods. It’s a road driven daily by Jessica Dreischmeier, 39, who works in children’s mental health care. AFP

Iranians step up rallies as death toll mounts

PARIS – Iranian protesters on Thursday stepped up their challenge to the clerical leadership with the biggest protests yet of nearly two weeks of rallies, as authorities cut internet access and the death toll from a crackdown mounted. The movement, which originated with a shutdown on the Tehran bazaar on Dec. 28 after the rial currency plunged to record lows, has spread nationwide and is now being marked by larger-scale demonstrations, including in the capital. The protests have troubled the authorities under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, already battling an economic crisis after years of sanctions and recovering from the June war against Israel. US President Donald Trump meanwhile threatened on Thursday to take severe action against Iran if its authorities “start killing people,” warning Washington would “hit them very hard.” That message came after rights groups accused Iranian security forces of shooting at demonstrators, with the Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights on Thursday saying security forces had killed at least 45 protesters, including eight minors, since the demonstrations began. CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT. A huge wave crashes on the jetty of the harbor of Le Conquet, western France on Thursday as storm Goretti is announced to approach France’s northern coasts. The northwest of France, barely recovered from a snowfall episode, was preparing to face the storm, with wind gusts that could reach 160 km/h in the Manche, a department under red alert where schools were closed Friday. SEOUL – South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung will travel to Japan next week for talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Seoul said Friday, days after meeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. The visit, on Tuesday and Wednesday, comes amid heightened regional tensions following China’s military drills around Taiwan late last month, as well as ballistic missiles fired by North Korea into the Sea of Japan. Lee and Takaichi last met in October on the sidelines of the APEC summit in the South Korean city of Gyeongju. This will be Lee’s second visit to Japan since last August when he met Takaichi’s predecessor Shigeru Ishiba. The South Korean leader will hold a summit meeting and dinner with Takaichi in Nara on Tuesday, where the two will discuss “regional and global issues”, South Korea’s presidential office said. They will also explore ways to “strengthen practical cooperation across a wide range of areas directly affecting people’s livelihoods, including the economy, society and culture,” Lee’s office said. Vance warns Europe: Take Trump seriously on Greenland threats WASHINGTON, DC – US Vice President JD Vance warned Europe on Thursday (Friday, Manila time) to take Donald Trump “seriously” on Greenland as the president ramps up threats against the Danish-ruled Arctic territory. Vance accused fellow NATO member Denmark and the rest of Europe of failing to do enough to protect the strategicallylocated island from the designs of Russia and China. European capitals have been scrambling to come up with a coordinated response after the White House said this week that Trump wanted to buy Greenland and refused to rule out military action. “I guess my advice to European leaders and anybody else would be to take the president of the United States seriously,” Vance told a briefing at the White House when asked about Greenland. Vance urged them to respond in par-

ticular to Trump’s insistence that the United States needs the island for “missile defense,” with Moscow and Beijing increasing military activities nearby and the Arctic ice melting due to climate change. “So what we’re asking our European friends to do is to take the security of that land mass more seriously, because if they’re not, the United States is going to have to do something about it,” Vance said. “What that is, I’ll leave that to the president as we continue to engage in diplomacy with our European friends and everybody on this particular topic.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to meet officials from Denmark and Greenland next week. An emboldened Trump has long talked about acquiring Greenland but has ramped up his threats since the US military operation to topple Venezuela’s ruler Nicolas Maduro last week. AFP

SYDNEY – Bushfires threatened dozens of rural towns in southeast Australia on Friday, firefighters said as hot winds fanned “hectic” conditions in the tinderdry countryside. Temperatures are forecast to soar past 40C as a heatwave blankets the region, creating some of the most dangerous bushfire weather since the “Black Summer” blazes of 2019-2020. Dozens of rural hamlets in the state of Victoria were urged to evacuate while they still could. “If you don’t leave now, it could result in your life being lost,” Emergency Management Commissioner Tim Wiebusch told reporters. Powerful wind gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour would temporarily ground firefighting aircraft trying to contain some 30 different blazes, Wiebusch said. Country Fire Authority boss Jason Heffernan said the fire danger was “catastrophic” -- the most severe rating possible. “Victorians should brace themselves for more property loss or worse. AFP

Kim pledges to ‘support Putin unconditionally’ SEOUL – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to “unconditionally support” all of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s policies and decisions, Pyongyang’s state media said Friday. North Korea has dispatched thousands of troops to fight for Russia, according to South Korean and Western intelligence agencies, as Moscow presses ahead with its nearly four-year invasion of Ukraine. In a letter shared by the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim said he felt “true comradely relations” from Putin and regarded their ties as the “most precious ones”. “Close cooperation” between the two countries “will continue in various spheres in the future”, Kim wrote. “I will unconditionally respect and unconditionally support all your policies and decisions and I have a willingness to be always with you for the sake of you and your Russia,” he added. “This choice will be constant and permanent.” AFP

Eagles ready to unleash Hurts as NFL playoffs begin LOS ANGELES—The Philadelphia Eagles are ready to unleash the full force of dual threat quarterback Jalen Hurts as they open their NFL postseason campaign on Sunday with a wild card clash against a depleted San Francisco 49ers line-up. After an inconsistent regular season campaign, the reigning Super Bowl champions have scuffled their way into the playoffs on the back of conservative play-calling that significantly limited Hurts’ dynamic rushing game -- normally a key part of the Eagles’ offensive arsenal. Hurts rushed for a total of 421 yards during the regular season, roughly 33 percent less than his 630 yards last year, and his lowest total since his 2020 rookie campaign. That restriction has been by design, with new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo and head coach Nick Sirianni reportedly preferring to protect Hurts from possible injury ahead of the postseason. But as they prepare to host the 49ers, Patullo has hinted the handbrake on Hurts may now be released. “Up to this point, our whole goal has just been to win games, and that’s what we were trying to do, win as many games as we can,” Patullo said this week when asked about Hurts. “And obviously now it counts even more. So as far as game planning going forward, we’ll do whatever we need to do to win the game.” Last season, the Eagles resembled an offensive juggernaut, with their rushing game led by running back Saquon Barkley and Hurts, carrying them to a crushing 55-23 rout of Washington in the NFC championship game before a 40-22 drubbing of Kansas City in the Super Bowl. “The past year showed us where we are strong and, more importantly, where we still need to grow,” the SBP said in its year-end assessment. “Our results affirmed our standing in Southeast Asia, but they also reminded us that sustained success in Asia and on the world stage requires constant adjustment and longterm investment.” On the men’s side, Gilas Pilipinas posted mixed results. After qualifying for the FIBA Asia Cup, the team finished seventh in Jeddah—an improvement from ninth in the previous edition but short of expectations. “We took a step forward, but not the leap we were aiming for,” SBP said of the Tim Cone–coached squad. “The improvement in placement matters, but performance against elite Asian teams remains the true benchmark.” Gilas Men responded strongly in the opening window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian

Qualifiers, sweeping Guam at home and away. “Those games were important for confidence and continuity,” the federation noted. “They allowed us to recalibrate after the Asia Cup and begin our longer journey toward 2027 and, hopefully, Los Angeles 2028.” At the Southeast Asian Games, Philippine basketball reaffirmed its regional supremacy. Both Gilas Men and Women captured gold medals in 5x5 competition. “Winning double gold at the SEA Games confirms that we remain the standard in the region,” SBP said. “At the same time, we are clear-eyed that Southeast Asia is only one step in our bigger ambition.” That ambition was further reflected in the Gilas Women’s campaign, which included maintaining Division A status in the FIBA Asia Cup and qualifying for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

In 3x3 basketball, the year delivered contrasting emotions. SEA Games medal hopes went unmet, but international progress—particularly for the women— signaled promise. “The SEA Games results were disappointing, and we take responsibility for that,” SBP said. “However, global rankings and performances across FIBA events show that our 3x3 women are on the right track, while the men’s program requires decisive changes.” Those changes began with the appointment of Ryan Gregorio as 3x3 program head. At the grassroots and youth levels, the federation pointed to continued regional success as a cornerstone of its long-term vision. The boys’ U16 team won another SEABA title, while the girls’ youth squad retained Division A status in Asia. SBP’s Talent Identification and Development Program evaluated more than 500 athletes across eight regions in 2025 and will expand further next year. Beyond competition, SBP highlighted major strides in coaching education, officiating, and governance. Nearly 500 coaches were accredited through the Coaches Academy, while the Technical Academy grew the referee pool to nearly 12,000 officials nationwide.

Humanoid robots go for KO in high-tech Vegas fight night LAS VEGAS—Two robots the size of schoolchildren stepped into the ring at BattleBots Arena. The human-like combatants stumbled a bit as they swung and kicked at each other in the Ultimate Fighting Robot (UFB) match, curiosity mixing with cheers from spectators at the event on the edge of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The contenders were a departure from the usual lineup at the event, known for wheeled machines equipped with wrecking tools. UFB backers are betting humanoid robots will win fans by transforming bouts from demolition derbies to mixed martial arts matches. A human referee addressed the robotic rivals as though they were fleshand-blood fighters. “This is the sport of the future,” said

Vitaly Bulatov, who co-founded UFB with his wife, Xenia. The couple from Russia envisions fans being won over by the “human stories” of the real people piloting the robot combatants. As the robots exchanged blows, commands to kick and punch came from human pilots ringside using a combination of cameras and motion-sensing Nintendo video game controllers. Cameras captured the pilots’ movements in real time, which were then repeated, more or less accurately, by the robots. The contenders looked at times like blindfolded boxers, triggering laughter with wild misses and cheers when blows landed. tertaining, as you see in movies like ‘Real Steel,’” said Esteban Perez, a 25-year-old IT worker from Denver watching from the audience. While today’s bouts are less spectacular than those depicted in the 2011 science fiction film about robot boxing starring Hugh Jackman, UFB events have sold out in San Francisco, attracting young

tech professionals. “It is definitely better than MMA,” Bulatov said, referring to mixed martial arts bouts. “It’s very hard to knock him out,” he added with a nod toward the ring. Beyond the thrills, the bouts provide opportunities to collect body movement data that can be used to train robot software. AFP

Swiatek romps to United Cup win in 58 minutes SYDNEY—World number two Iga Swiatek defied a partisan crowd to thrash Australian Maya Joint in Sydney on Friday and give Poland the lead in their United Cup quarter-final. Joint is a talent at age 19 but she was blown away by the sixtime Grand Slam champion, Swiatek teaching her a lesson in a 6-1, 6-1 victory in 58 minutes. The 24-year-old Swiatek will be among the favourites when the Australian Open starts on January 18 and this showed why as she won a third match in a row. Hubert Hurkacz faces home hope Alex de Minaur in the men’s singles as Poland and Australia battle for the right to meet reigning champions the United States in the last four. The other semi-final is between Belgium and Switzerland. The United Cup is a mixedteams competition featuring 18 countries and serves as buildup to the Australian Open. In Brisbane, World number one Aryna Sabalenka sent an Australian Open warning as she beat Madison Keys on Friday in Brisbane in a repeat of last year’s Melbourne final. Keys stunned Sabalenka nearly 12 months ago but the Belarusian took revenge on the American with a statement 6-3, 6-3 victory to reach the semifinals. Keys was playing less than 24 hours after her marathon three-hour win over Russia’s Diana Shnaider and had heavy strapping on her thigh. AFP

DOTr speeds up land acquisition for subway T By Darwin G. Amojelar

HE Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Friday it has expedited land acquisition for multibillion-peso rail projects, reaching 90.76 percent right-of-way for the Metro Manila Subway as of December 2025.

The progress marks a substantial increase from February 2025, when subway land acquisition stood at 51 percent. DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said Friday 2025 served as a banner year for the agency as it worked to meet directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to fast-track infrastructure development for the benefit of thousands of commuters.

Parallel gains were recorded for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) system, where 56 percent of the northern segment is now cleared for construction. Under the leadership of former Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon and Lopez, the number of acquired properties for the NSCR north segment jumped to 1,143 by year-end, up from just 38 parcels in February 2025.

To break long-standing bottlenecks, the agency addressed disputes involving major properties such as White Plains, Corinthian Gardens and Metrowalk. DOTr assistant secretary for ROWSA IC Calaguas oversaw the expansion of the right-of-way workforce from 200 to 900 personnel to handle the increased technical and legal workload. The DOTr expects to complete all land acquisition for the northern segment of the NSCR by mid-2026. For the southern portion of the project, authorities have already cleared land for the Banlic depot and 3 out of 19 stations, specifically EDSA, Cabuyao and Sta. Rosa. The 147-kilometer NSCR will link Clark International Airport to Calamba, cutting travel time from four hours to less than 2.5 hours.

800,000 students annually and reduce average class sizes from 50 to 39 students while eliminating the need for multiple-shift schedules. The council also approved the P145.56 billion Central Mindanao High Standard Highway, which will connect Cagayan de Oro and Malaybalay. The 64.7-kilometer road project, funded through official development assistance, includes 47 bridges and is expected to nearly halve travel time between the two hubs from 6.5 hours to 3.5 hours. Department of Public Works and Highways officials said the highway would span Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon provinces, stimulating local businesses and attracting new investments to the region.

PH economy to grow 5.7% in 2026—UN THE Philippine economy is projected to expand 5.7 percent in 2026 as low inflation and robust labor conditions drive consumer spending, according to the latest United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects report. The growth forecast marks an acceleration from the estimated 5.0 percent expansion in 2025. The UN expects the country’s gross domestic product growth to further quicken to 6.1 percent in 2027, supported by steady remittance inflows and increased government investment. Price stability is anticipated to remain within target, with the report predicting Philippine inflation will average 2.3 percent in 2026 and 2.8 percent in 2027.

Peso among vulnerable Asian currencies this year, says Oxford Economics THE Philippine peso, Indian rupee and Indonesian rupiah will remain vulnerable to foreign exchange fluctuations as domestic growth narratives struggle to compete with a strong US dollar, according to an analysis by Oxford Economics. The research firm noted that regional currencies backed by policy credibility and strong external buffers, such as the Singapore dollar and Malaysian ringgit, are better positioned to outperform.

STRATEGIC TIE-UP.

Kobayasahi Takayuki, Chairperson of the Policy Research Council of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and former Minister in charge of Economic Security, meets with Department of Trade and Industry Ma. Maria Cristina AldeguerRoque to discuss energy cooperation and economic security, including supply chain resilience. The visit is part of a broader LDP delegation trip aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and promoting strategic collaboration.

It said current-account deficit economies like the Philippines face ongoing pressure from weak investment and governance-related disruptions that continue to weigh on currency performance. Even in a scenario where the US dollar weakens, Oxford Economics expects limited scope for durable rallies among these vulnerable currencies. It said that in the Philippines, specific headwinds linked to external trade policy uncertainty are extend-

ing the currency weakness observed throughout the previous year. The peso hit a record low of 59.35 against the US dollar on Jan. 7, 2025, surpassing the previous low of 59.22 set on Dec. 9. It closed at 59.245 a dollar on Friday. Despite the volatility, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has maintained a hands-off approach to the foreign exchange market. BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. told reporters at a Rotary Club event

that the central bank has resisted “tremendous pressure” to defend the currency. Remolona said the country’s underlying economic fundamentals do not currently warrant direct intervention. He said that while some neighboring countries purposely weaken their currencies to support export-led manufacturing, the Philippines no longer maintains the significant manufacturing base required to benefit from such a strategy in the same way.

Photographer retracts magazine cover claims By Katrina Manubay INDEPENDENT photographer Max Abasolo retracted social media claims that the Department of Tourism (DOT) prioritized an image of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco over destination photos for the cover of Philippine Topics magazine. In a follow-up post, Abasolo clarified he had no direct involvement with the publication and noted his previous remarks were based on personal observations. He said he is not affiliated with Philippine Topics and did not provide any materials or photos to the magazine. Abasolo said his initial

post reflected a personal observation made as an independent contractor who previously worked on creative materials for Philippine destinations. The retraction follows Abasolo’s initial claim that Frasco appeared on the cover despite his team producing 236,000 photos and 6,500 video materials from shoots across various Philippine regions. Abasolo has since deleted the post containing those allegations. The DOT dismissed the photographer’s initial statements as false and misleading. The agency clarified that Abasolo was never contracted by the department in connection with the magazine.

UN analysts noted that economic conditions across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are becoming increasingly divergent. Vietnam is expected to grow 6.0 percent in 2026, a slight moderation from its 6.7 percent estimate in 2025, but it remains a regional leader due to infrastructure investment. Indonesia is projected to maintain a steady 5.0 percent growth rate through 2026, while Malaysia continues to see resilient private consumption. In contrast, Thailand faces challenges as high household debt levels weigh on private consumption. On a global scale, the United Nations forecasts growth will decline slightly to 2.7 percent in 2026 from 2.8 percent in 2025. This remains below the pre-pandemic average of 3.2 percent recorded between 2010 and 2019. The report said that while growth in the United States, Japan and Europe will hold steady, large developing economies such as India and China will continue to drive global momentum through resilient domestic demand. For lower-income countries, the outlook is less favorable as they balance the benefits of global disinflation against high financing costs.

PSEi rises on rate cut hopes, upbeat economic growth outlook LOCAL shares ended the week in the green Friday on hopes the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will continue its easing cycle to stimulate the softening economy. The 30-company Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) added 27.47 points, or 0.44 percent, to close at 6,348.14. The broader all-shares index ended flat at 3,607.00. Meanwhile, the peso continued to depreciate, closing at 59.245 against the U.S. dollar Friday, compared with 59.17 on Thursday. Analysts said investor sentiment is being boosted by expectations of further rate cuts in the first half of the year. This prediction is supported by recent data showing inflation settled at 1.7 percent in 2025, better than the government’s 2 percent to 4 percent target. Regina Capital Development Corp. head of sales Luis Limlingan said market sentiment was also buoyed by a United Nations report projecting faster economic growth for the country in 2026 and 2027. “This upbeat outlook helped sustain investor confidence and supported the index’s gains,” Limlingan said. Four of the six sectoral indices ended in positive territory, led by services, which advanced 1.03 percent, and mining and oil, which increased 0.70 percent. Financials and holding firms also went up 0.70 percent and 0.40 percent, respectively. On the other hand, property dropped 0.55 percent and industrials fell 0.17 percent. Trading was active, with value turnover reaching P6.11 billion. Decliners edged out gainers, 114 to 92, while 64 stocks closed unchanged. Foreign investors remained net buyers with inflows of P320.68 million. Asian stock markets were mixed Friday after a two-day stutter as traders look ahead to the release of crucial US jobs data and a possible Supreme Court ruling on Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs. Megawide plans to raise P1.5b via fixed-rate notes issuance M By Jenniffer B. Austria

EGAWIDE Construction Corp. plans to raise up to P1.5 billion through fixed-rate notes to refinance existing obligations and for general corporate purposes. The notes offering was granted an issue credit rating of PRS Aa with a stable outlook from Philippine Rating Services Corp. (PhilRatings). Obligations rated PRS Aa are considered high quality and subject to very low credit risk, reflecting a very strong capacity to meet financial

commitments. The stable outlook indicates the rating is likely to be maintained over the next 12 months. PhilRatings said the rating and outlook were supported by Megawide’s solid brand and track record, strategic transit and property initiatives, sustained margin improvements despite

a moderate decline in net income, and sustainable leverage levels. PhilRatings noted that Megawide has delivered major infrastructure projects across different administrations, including the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, MactanCebu International Airport, Clark International Airport and the Public School Infrastructure Project. It also continues to leverage its construction and engineering capabilities across its transport and property platforms. The company has entered property development through PH1 World Developers Inc., which focuses on affordable to mid-income housing. It

also participates in the government’s Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pamilyang Pilipino program through its subsidiary Megawide Dreamrise Residences Inc. Megawide’s debt-to-equity ratio improved to 1.9 times as of the end of September 2025, from 2.1 times at the end of 2024, supported by lower debt and higher equity. Part of the company’s debt was settled using P3.5 billion in cash collected from parent Citicore Holdings Investment Inc. Management said it intends to further strengthen the company’s financial position by retiring a substantial portion of its debt over the next year.

By enabling quick testing, recharging and replacement of units, the hubs minimize downtime and maintain reliable mobile service during emergencies and extended power interruptions. The initiative is critical in Southern Luzon and Bicol, where severe weather frequently disrupts communication. By keeping vital systems running, the hubs help residents continue working and studying while staying in touch with family. “Connectivity is a vital part of people’s everyday lives. That is why we strive to keep our cell sites operational, especially when disasters strike. We’re making sure that communities can count on Globe to stay connected no matter the situation,” said Joel Agustin, Globe senior vice president for network planning and engineering. Charging hubs are now operational in San Pablo, Laguna, and Batangas, with deployment underway in Pili, Camarines Sur. Additional facilities are being prepared in Mindoro, Palawan, Marinduque and Romblon. Each hub can refresh multiple batteries per week, ensuring a steady supply of fully charged units. PH registers $4.6b in M&A deals MinDA, DOE plan Mindanao green energy auction M By Othel V. Campos

By Alena Mae S. Flores THE Mindanao Development Authority and Department of Energy plan to launch a green energy auction for Mindanao this year to secure a stable power supply and support the region’s economic growth. Officials from both agencies met this week to coordinate the procurement of firm baseload capacity and accelerate renewable energy solutions, including solar power paired with battery energy storage systems. MinDA chairperson Leo Tereso Magno and Energy Secretary Sharon Garin led the discussions in Taguig City. Garin said the auction is critical for accelerating renewable energy capacity, noting that projects will receive 20-year contracts to provide financing stability and reinforce investor confidence. Energy Undersecretary Mylene Capongcol said the department intends to hold the auction in 2026 but is still determining the exact timing for supply delivery. She said the specific auction for Mindanao aims to attract more investors and ensure the region has sufficient power as demand grows. The expansion of Mindanao’s minerals industry is expected to be a primary driver of future energy needs. Magno said the region’s energy future should be secured through a balanced mix of baseload and renewable sources to remain responsive to demand between 2026 and 2028. MinDA assistant secretary Romeo Montenegro said private developers would play a key role in keeping projects on schedule. Recent investment missions have already attracted interest in clean energy projects from Malaysia, Qatar and South Korea.

ERGERS and acquisitions (M&A) in the Philippines totaled 74 deals worth $4.6 billion in 2025 as investors flocked to the energy and natural resources sector, according to a report by Isla Lipana & Co./PwC Philippines.

The energy and natural resources sector led the market with 22 transactions valued at $1.9 billion, accounting for 29.7 percent of total deal volume. Consumer and retail followed at 14.9 percent, while industrials made up 12.2 percent of the activity. Investor activity remained strategically selective throughout the year, focusing on transactions with stronger fundamentals.

PwC Philippines M&A and corporate finance partner Trissy Rogacion said deals are taking longer to close due to more deliberate and strategic decision-making, with several transactions expected to be completed early this year. Significant energy transactions included the $897.5 million acquisition of First Gen assets by Prime Infrastructure Capital and a $127.6 million

investment in SP New Energy Corp. by Meralco. SembCorp purchased the Puente Al Sol solar farm in Negros Occidental for $77.4 million. Market interest is expected to be sustained by policy support, specifically the Philippine Energy Plan’s target to increase the renewable share of power generation to 35 percent by 2030. Incentives such as duty-free importation of renewable energy equipment also continue to attract capital. The real estate and infrastructure sectors posted a combined deal value of $1.2 billion. PwC Philippines chairman and senior partner Roderick Danao said renewable energy clearly drove activity last year in alignment with the government’s clean energy program,

positioning the market for continued flow in the energy sector. Investment sentiment was also influenced by legislative reforms, including the Real Property Valuation and Assessment Reform Act and the Accelerated and Reformed Right-ofWay Act. In the industrial sector, nine announced deals worth $180 million were recorded, primarily in metal smelting, refining and commercial construction. PwC expects the energy sector to continue to lead activity in 2026, as both foreign and domestic investors increase exposure to renewable projects. Healthcare is also expected to maintain deal flow as operators expand hospital networks across the country.

cern over policy consistency after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vetoed unprogrammed appropriations in the 2026 budget, including funds for the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) program. MMPC said it respects the decision to prioritize fiscal discipline but called for clarity regarding the release of incentives already earned through actual performance. The automaker said it has invested heavily in local manufacturing during its 60 years in the country to increase the localization of parts and boost domestic output. MMPC said it remains committed to working with govern-

ment agencies to ensure transparent processes for settling incentive claims. MMPC said predictable policies are essential to sustaining investor confidence and protecting manufacturing jobs. CAMPI said the uncertainty over funding commitments has broader implications for the local automotive sector. The industry group warned that unresolved funding issues could jeopardize future investments and the development of local parts manufacturing. Participants should receive incentives corresponding to performance that has already delivered economic benefits to the country, CAMPI said. The group urged the government to implement the Revitalizing the Automotive Industry for Competitiveness Enhancement (RACE) program as soon as possible to serve as a transition toward future development initiatives. IN BRIEF SEC broadens REIT scope THE Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has revised the rules for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) to allow a wider range of income-generating assets, toll roads and airports, to qualify for public offerings. It said the new framework expands the definition of income-generating real estate to include properties with recurring and predictable cash inflows. Beyond traditional leases, REITs can now include assets that generate passive income from toll fees, user fees, ticket sales, parking fees and storage fees. The expanded scope covers railways, air navigation facilities, ports, information and communications technology infrastructure, energy assets, data centers, and warehouses. SEC chairman Francisco Lim said this signals the commission’s priority to deepen the capital market and provide more wealthcreation opportunities for Filipinos. Under the revised rules, REITs may own these assets directly or indirectly through unlisted special purpose vehicles. For indirect ownership, the REIT should hold at least a two-thirds in the entity. The SEC also extended the reinvestment period for sponsors or promoters to 2 years from the date of receipt of proceeds, doubling the previous 1-year window. This applies to funds raised from the sale of REIT shares or the transfer of real estate to the trust. Jenniffer B. Austria

Gov’t asked to streamline solar rooftop permits

THE Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA) called on the government to prioritize the improvement of the permitting process for solar rooftops in 2026 to unlock the potential of the energy sector. PSSEA president Ping Mendoza said a recent meeting with Energy Secretary Sharon Garin showed a strong alignment in encouraging the shift toward distributed energy. Mendoza said rooftop solar is quick to

deploy and provides benefits that directly impact local communities and households. Mendoza said while national targets remain ambitious, the reality of project development still faces delays. He urged for seamless coordination between the Department of Energy, Energy Regulatory Commission, local government units and vital agencies like the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, National Grid Corp. of the Philippines and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples. He said the goal is to implement a wholeof-government approach where local permits and land clearances are synchronized with national energy goals. Mendoza said the group seeks to end the era of fragmented approvals that stall critical infrastructure. Alena Mae S. Flores

PEZA deputy director-general for policy and planning Anidelle Joy Alguso and EDAC treasurer Connie Robinson signed the registration agreement on Jan. 5, 2026. The company plans to begin commercial operations in the first half of 2026 at the Filinvest Innovation Park within New Clark City in Tarlac. The facility will focus on the manufacture and assembly of electronic connectors. EDAC Philippines intends to hire at least 90 Filipino workers during its initial phase to bolster the country’s export capacity in electronic components. PEZA facilitates operations and provides incentives for export-oriented investments in designated special economic zones. The agency continues to expand approvals in priority sectors such as electronics manufacturing services and semiconductor manufacturing services, which remain primary contributors to national export growth and employment. Traveling Taiwan with TAITRA: A journey defined by ease, warmth, and connection By Marielle Reyes THERE are trips that impress through spectacle, and then there are those that stay with you because of how they make you feel. Traveling through Taiwan this December, under the auspices of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), offered the latter. From the moment we arrived in Taipei, the journey unfolded with a sense of ease that never felt staged or hurried, allowing both the destinations and the people to leave a lasting impression. Earlier in the journey, a visit to the H2U office offered insight into Taiwan’s approach to preventive health and wellness. The space reflected efficiency and care, emphasizing how health management here is designed to be accessible and seamlessly integrated

into everyday life. Transitioning the day onto BASEPARA they offered a lighthearted and memorable introduction to one of Taiwan’s most loved sports. Trying baseball firsthand, even as beginners, became less about learning the rules and more about shared participation. The experience led the session into an easy moment of laughter and connection, while highlighting how sport in Taiwan is often approached as a way to bring people together. Dinnerat 85TD Restaurant was the perfect way to wind down and finally get to meet all the finalists and the faces behind Taitra’s go healthy with Taiwan event. Located within Taipei 101, the eight-course meal unfolded seamlessly, allowing each dish to be appreciated without feeling over-

whelming. The night was filled with laughter and conversations that made everyone feel connected with a sense of friendly familiarity to one another encouraged by executive director of TAITRA, Brian Lee, who hosted our memorable dinner. Dining high above the city offered a striking contrast to the casual moments of the trip, blending refined cuisine with panoramic night views of Taipei. What stood out early on was how naturally the group came together. Media representatives and finalist delegates from different parts of the world quickly found common ground. Conversations flowed effortlessly, whether over shared meals or during long transfers between cities. There was no sense of formality or hierarchy, just a collective openness that made the experience feel

collaborative rather than curated. This sense of connection was mirrored by the people of Taiwan themselves. Across cities and regions, the warmth of local hospitality was consistent and sincere. Simple interactions were marked by patience, courtesy, and a quiet attentiveness that made visitors feel genuinely welcome. Even without a shared language, kindness was easily understood, reinforcing the idea that hospitality here is instinctive rather than performative. A moment that stuck with me was when it was discussed over dinner how the people of Taiwan talk about themselves as a community instinctively. It was pointed out by my great friend Eric representing Mexico, when Sophia and Weiting, our lovely tour guides spoke about their hometowns they referred to it as “our hometown” instead of beginning with “my”, this applies to everything else they spoke about, thinking about themselves as part of a whole community. Beyond the city, the journey offered moments of calm and reflection. At Sun Moon Lake, the landscape encouraged a slower pace. Cycling along the lake was not just a scenic activity, but a reminder of how deeply nature is woven into everyday life in Taiwan. It was a moment where the group, despite different backgrounds, shared the same stillness and appreciation. It was definitely a view to treasure and a day deeply appreciated by everyone.

PLDT ENTERPRISE X MUNTINLUPA

Scams evolve, but so do we: How scam-safe are you?

SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 2026

25,000-plus learners, teachers to benefit from connectivity pact A S part of its commitment to modernize education and support 21st-century learning in the area, the City Government of Muntinlupa and the Schools Division Office (SDO) of the Department of Education (DepEd) have partnered with PLDT Enterprise to deliver reliable internet connectivity across the city’s 29 public schools.

The initiative forms a key component of SDO Muntinlupa’s DUNONG Program, which aims to elevate educator excellence through strengthened support for teachers and streamline school operations by reducing teachers’ administrative workload. This is enabled by the use of digital tools that improve efficiency and learning outcomes. With PLDT Enterprise solutions now deployed, SDO Muntinlupa is preparing to roll out digital systems that automate tasks such as attendance reporting, grade encoding, school communications, and compliance submissions. These processes previously required hours or even days to complete. By minimizing manual work, teachers can devote more time to lesson planning, student support, and effective classroom instruction, reinforcing the city’s commitment to empowering its education workforce. The partnership includes Enterprise Broadband, structured cabling with access points, and PLDT Satellite Internet via Starlink. Enterprise Broadband ensures uninterrupted access to DepEd systems and online platforms and supports virtual learning and cloud-based tools. Structured cabling with access

points provides campus-wide Wi-Fi and enables seamless connectivity for teachers, staff, and students. PLDT Satellite Internet via Starlink addresses connectivity gaps in underserved locations and guarantees continuous access to DepEd platforms and online learning resources. Together, these solutions reinforce data security, streamline school operations, and enhance service delivery throughout Muntinlupa’s public education network. The impact of the program is already being felt across the community. More than 25,000 students and faculty members now have stable access to digital learning platforms. Administrative reports that used to take three to five days to complete can now be generated

in real time, significantly speeding up compliance with DepEd requirements. At least 300 school administrators and staff are also undergoing training on new ICT systems. The program accelerates Muntinlupa’s long-term goal of building future-ready, digitally empowered schools aligned with national education priorities, positioning the city as a model for smart education governance. “Reliable connectivity is now a basic requirement for learning. By partnering with PLDT Enterprise, we are investing in the future of our students and strengthening the support system for our teachers,” said Hon. Rozzano Rufino Biazon, City Mayor of Muntinlupa. “This initiative allows us to

modernize learning environments and enhance the effectiveness of our educators, ensuring that Muntinlupa continues to be a leader in innovative and inclusive public service.” From PLDT Enterprise, Ruby Montoya, Vice President and Head of Enterprise Revenue Group, said, “We are honored to support Muntinlupa City and SDO Muntinlupa in their journey toward digital transformation. By providing secure, reliable, and future-ready connectivity, we aim to help empower teachers, streamline governance, and create a more inclusive learning environment. This aligns with our commitment to enable institutions to thrive through meaningful innovation.”

Empowering content creators, supporting livelihoods at Nestlé Professional’s first-ever TikTok affiliates event SOCIAL commerce has changed the landscape of discovering and purchasing products online. Through live selling and affiliate content creators on social media platforms like TikTok, buying an item is now as easy as scrolling on your feed, clicking the yellow basket and proceeding to checkout. This streamlined process is what brands are leveraging to keep up with today’s dynamic retail space and bring their products directly to consumers. Nestlé Professional, with its commitment to empower creators and foster collaboration in the food and beverage industry, gathered over 100 affiliates from Metro Manila and nearby cities to join the Nestlé Professional Creator Playground last November 5. Culinary experts conducted hands-on workshops and live demos using Nestlé Professional and Maggi Professional products that served as a guide for attendees to boost their selling potential and further elevate their content on TikTok. The event also featured informative and inspiring talks about content creation strategies, effective use of social media platforms, and best practices for monetizing content through affiliate marketing. “We recognize the growing influence of social commerce and the vital role that content creators play in shaping consumer preferences. By bringing together

creators, we aim to provide them with the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive in this space,” said Nestlé Professional Business Executive Officer, Rica Mier. “This event is just the beginning of our goal to build a community where creators feel valued and empowered to share their experiences with our brand.” Michelle Mendoza from Antipolo City is one of the content creators who joined the Nestlé Professional Creator Playground. According to her, she gained valuable insights from the event about developing more creative videos for her audience and driving sales. While new to the TikTok affiliate scene, Michelle has a background in business marketing that makes her comfortable in communicating with all types of people

through live selling. “Swak kami ni TikTok at ng pag-aaffiliate. ‘Yan ang aking passion. At ‘yung gusto ko sa ganito, sarili mo ‘yung oras mo.” Just like Michelle, fellow Nestlé Professional affiliate Jenalyn Vicente enjoys the freedom that being an affiliate provides especially to moms like her who are looking for an additional source of income. “‘Yung kinikita ko sa dati kong work, kinikita ko na rin ngayon. Sinisideline ko lang dati itong pag-a-affiliate. Mula pa-isa-isang items, dumami nang dumami dahil ina-approach talaga ng tao,” she shared. Self-proclaimed rakitero Genesis Quejada added being an affiliate to his long list of side hustles just after graduating college this year. He believes consistency and hard work are key to make it big in this line of work. “‘Yung strategy ko ay maglive for two hours in the morning and two hours at night. ‘Yung pagitan ng oras ko na ‘yun, I make more content in batches para kung ma-busy man in the next days, may ready-made videos pa rin for posting,” he said. Because Nestlé products are pantry and kitchen essentials in Filipino homes, Michelle said they’re always in demand. Discounts vouchers and freebies also attract more consumers to their page and to check out the products they’re showcasing. This results in higher sales and bigger commissions for the affiliates.

SEAN “Diddy” Combs, who is serving a four-year prison sentence for prostitutionrelated crimes, has asked Donald Trump for a pardon, but the US president said he does not plan to grant clemency to the hip-hop star. Trump, in an interview with The New York Times published Thursday, also said he does not plan to issue pardons to several other high-profile individuals, including deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The 56-year-old Combs was convicted last July of two counts of transporting people across state lines for prostitution. A jury acquitted the music mogul of the most serious charges—sex trafficking and racketeering. Trump told the Times during Wednesday’s interview that Combs had sent him a letter asking for a pardon, but he was not inclined to grant it. Asked about pardoning Maduro, who was seized by US forces over the weekend and is facing drug trafficking charges, Trump said: “No, I don’t see that.”

In November, Trump pardoned Honduran ex-president Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was serving a 45-year sentence after being convicted of drug trafficking. Trump also said he did not plan to issue pardons to disgraced crypto tycoon Sam Bankman-Fried, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence, and former Democratic senator Robert Menendez, who is serving an 11-year sentence for accepting bribes. The Times said the Republican president was also asked whether he would consider pardoning Derek Chauvin, the white Minneapolis police officer convicted of the 2020 murder of George Floyd, whose death sparked nationwide racial justice protests. “I haven’t been asked about it,” Trump said. On the day of his inauguration, Trump pardoned more than 1,500 people who had been convicted or were facing charges for involvement in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters. He has carried out a slew of other pardons since then for other loyalists. AFP

OME promises take time to fulfill, but commitment doesn’t waver with the years. And for Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo, a vow made to her late father in 2017 became a guiding force, shaping her every step toward the Bar.

Lamentillo has passed the 2025 Bar Examination on her first attempt. It was an achievement, she says was anchored in a promise she made to her father during their final conversation. In a social media post shared after the results were released, Lamentillo looked back on the moment that set her path in motion: “Eight years ago, in 2017, my dad and I had our last conversation. Before he passed, I promised him I’d become a lawyer. I’ve carried that promise with me ever since—quietly, stubbornly, even on the days I wasn’t sure I could finish what I started.” She also shared that her review continued even while overseas. “I brought law books with me to Oxford and studied in between everything because I couldn’t let that promise fade,” Lamentillo wrote. Describing the emotional weight of taking the exam, Lamentillo connected the milestone to her father’s memory in the same social media post: “This was my first time taking the bar, and I walked into it thinking of him the whole way through.” Following the release of the bar results, Lamentillo marked the moment as the culmination of years of perseverance. “Today, more than 8 years later, I finally get to put Atty. before my name. Dad, I kept my word. You can finally rest in peace.” Lamentillo previously served as an Undersecretary
