PHILIPPINE National Police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III is pushing through with the charity boxing match at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum today (Sunday), whether or not his challenger, acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, shows up. PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo yesterday said that preparations are complete, including the setup of the boxing ring, and safety arrangements have been coordinated with the Games and Amusement Board, which is deploying referees and medical teams.
House can appeal SC impeach rule—Ex-CJ
Abante: Congress won’t stop with duty to uphold truth
By Pot Chavez and Maricel Cruz
THE House of Representatives can still file a motion for reconsideration to appeal the Supreme Court decision declaring the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte as unconstitutional, retired chief justice Artemio Panganiban said.
“Note that the decision is not final yet. It is still subject to a motion for reconsideration (or for clarification) by the HOR, if it so wants to file one,” Panganiban said in a statement.
Still, he said that regardless of whether people are for or against the decision, it should be respected.
“We must observe the rule of law,” he said.
House spokesperson lawyer Princess Abante said the chamber has not yet officially received a copy of the decision but assured the public it will be reviewed with utmost respect once furnished.
“We respect the Supreme Court. But our constitutional duty to uphold truth and accountability does not end here,” Abante said.
“The decision of the Supreme Court will be respected—but it will never cause us to stop fulfilling our duty,” she added.
Abante emphasized the power to initiate impeachment proceedings belongs solely to the House, as mandated by the Constitution.
She said judicial interference at this stage could erode the constitutional principle of checks and balances and curtail the public’s right to demand accountability from highranking officials.
“As the PNP chief said, while he is focused on his job, he will show up at the Rizal Coliseum on Sunday,” Fajardo said in a radio interview. The event was initiated after Duterte challenged Torre to a fistfight in a podcast episode, which Torre accepted, turning it into a charity match to raise funds for victims of recent widespread flooding brought by
Fajardo said.
The match remains uncertain after Duterte reportedly left for Singapore on Friday.
Still, Torre remains optimistic, Fajardo said.
OCD: 30 dead, 7 others missing due to three typhoons, ‘habagat’
By Rex Espiritu, Charles Dantes and Othel Campos
THE number of casualties from the recent storms and the intensified southwest monsoon or “habagat” has climbed to 30, the Office of Civil Defense said Saturday.
Of the 30 fatalities, 13 were confirmed to be caused by the rains brought by typhoons ‘Crising,’ ‘Dante,’ ‘Emong’ and the ‘habagat,’ while the others are still up for validation.
The National Capital Region recorded the highest number with nine deaths, while Western Visayas followed with six deaths. Seven others are missing, while 10 were injured, the OCD said. In total, 5.9 million individuals, or 1.6 million families, were affected by the onslaught across 6,401 barangays in the country.
As of Saturday, 190,000 individuals, or 53,000 families, are still seeking refuge in evacuation centers.
As this developed, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited yesterday flood-hit Navotas to inspect the damaged Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate and check on families displaced by recent severe flooding.

Over 600k families benefit from DHSUD moratorium
By Maricel V. Cruz
MORE than 600,000 families stand to benefit from the payment moratorium implemented by attached agencies of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), in compliance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to extend all available assistance to victims of recent weather disturbances.
In a statement, the National Housing Authority (NHA) said about 500,000 households will benefit from the one-month moratorium to be imposed this August.
World’s smallest snake is making a big comeback
WASHINGTON — A snake so small it could be mistaken for a worm has been spotted in Barbados, nearly two decades after it was thought to have been lost to science.
The Barbados threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma carlae) was found hiding under a rock in central Barbados during an ecological survey in March by the Barbados Ministry of the Environment and National Beautification and conservation group Re:wild.
“Barbados threadsnakes are blind snakes, so they’re very cryptic,” said Connor Blades, a project officer with the ministry who helped make the discovery. “They’re quite rare also, it seems. There have only been a handful of confirmed sightings since 1889, so not many people have ever seen it.”
Measuring just three to four inches long (eight to ten centimeters) when fully grown—tiny enough to nearly fit on a US quarter—the Barbados threadsnake is the world’s smallest snake. It is distinguished by orange stripes along its back, eyes on the sides of its head, and a small scale on its snout.
The snake was taken to the University of the West Indies for examination to distinguish it from the similar invasive Brahminy blind snake. After validation, it was returned to the wild.
“The threadsnake’s rediscovery is also a call to all of us as Barbadians that forests in Barbados are very special and need protection,” said Re:wild’s Justin Springer. AFP
Meanwhile, the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) reported that more than 148,000 families whose homes and livelihoods were severely impacted by the recent typhoons and the intensified southwest monsoon (habagat) will benefit from the moratorium.
For its part, the National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation (NHMFC) announced that a total of 34,622 families will also be granted a one-month payment moratorium. The moratoriums imposed by NHA, SHFC, and NHMFC are automatic; member-beneficiaries need not apply to avail. The uncollected payments will be added at the end of their payment terms. On the other hand, the one-month moratorium of the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund is not automatic to give members the option not to avail. Those who wish to avail must apply at Pag-IBIG branches. DHSUD Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling commended the agencies for their swift action, noting the department’s preparation of postdisaster assistance through its Integrated Disaster Shelter Assistance Program (IDSAP).
China ships return to WPS after severe weather conditions
By Rex Espiritu
AFTER severe weather conditions caused by a series of typhoons in the country, a total of four to five Chinese Coast Guard ships have returned to Scarborough Shoal (Bajo de Masinloc) as of Saturday, the West Philippine Sea (WPS) monitor said.
Sealight Director Ray Powell told Manila Standard that the ships are
now patrolling within 25 to 30 nautical miles of the shoal.
The number of foreign coast guard ships varied, as one may be returning home while another had turned off its automatic identification system (AIS). “Four of the five CCG ships came back to the shoal within the past 24 hours. The fifth (CCG 3104) has since gone AIS-dark,” Powell said.
Six Chinese warships are also expected to return by Sunday morning. “They are patrolling around the shoal within a radius of 25–30 nautical miles, resuming their previous exclusion zone,” Powell added. Bajo de Masinloc is located 124 nautical miles off Masinloc, Zambales, and is considered within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

A TOTAL of 460 voters participated in mock elections held in Marawi City and Tawi-Tawi in preparation for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) elections scheduled for October 13, 2025, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Saturday.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia said each of the eight clustered precincts accommodated at least 50 voters. The mock polls were held in Marawi City and Butig in Lanao del Sur, and Bongao and Simunul in Tawi-Tawi.
Voting ran from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., with Comelec closely monitoring the proceedings, including the vote transmission system and the consolidation and canvassing process to ensure accuracy. In Lanao del Sur, mock elections were conducted in the villages of Sagonsongan and Dulay in Marawi, and in Bayabao Poblacion and Dilimbayan in Butig. In TawiTawi, the activity was held in TubigBoh and Ungus-Ungus in Bongao, and in Tubig Indangan and Bagid in Simunul.

Larsian food hub in Cebu faces sanitation issues
CEBU CITY—Larsian, Cebu’s iconic street food hub known for its grilled barbecue and vibrant dining experience, is facing serious deterioration, sanitation problems, and overpricing concerns, local officials warn.
Following a surprise inspection, Governor Baricuatro’s Chief of Staff Paulo Uy and Provincial Information Officer Ruben Licera reported dismantled and abandoned stalls, vacant vendor spaces, poor hygiene practices, accumulated garbage, and significantly overpriced food items at the Larsian compound, also known as Sugbo Sentro.
Uy and Licera emphasized that neglecting such a prominent tourism site could damage Cebu’s reputation as a top culinary and cultural destination, and harm the livelihoods of local vendors.
“Larsian is more than just a food stop; it has long symbolized Cebuano culture and authentic local cuisine,” Licera said. He added that the recent condition of the site fails to reflect the pride and identity it once stood for. Minerva Newman
Navotas floodgate completion by Aug 8.
PUBLIC Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the repair of the damaged Tangos-Tanza (MalabonNavotas) Navigational Gate is set to be completed by August 8, following an order from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. The President directed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to expedite the restoration of the floodgate and the construction of retaining walls during an inspection in Navotas City on Saturday morning.
Bonoan explained that while the structure had already undergone repairs in 2024, it was recently damaged again. “We were supposed to complete the current repair by July 20, but it was delayed due to heavy rains,” he said. He added that the navigational gate is a vital barrier against flooding in low-lying areas, especially during high tides. Despite weather interruptions, work on the retaining walls and other protective structures will continue without pause.

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) total amount of assistance extended to families and individuals affected by recent weather systems has reached P293 million, an agency official reported over the weekend.
A total of 53,132 families—or 189,346 individuals—are currently taking temporary shelter in 1,609 evacuation centers across the National Capital Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Caraga, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Tropical Cyclones Crising and Dante, as well as the continued downpour from Typhoon Emong and the southwest monsoon or habagat, have impacted 1,380,087 families—or 4,934,207 individuals—across 5,501 barangays nationwide.
Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) said the agency’s delivery of family food packs (FFPs) and non-food items (NFIs) will continue in the coming days and weeks. This is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive that “no one should be left behind during times of disaster.”
“Our relief operations continue in various areas in collaboration with our local government units (LGUs). Leading among the aid that we have already sent is the 431,722 family food packs and 3,903 ready-to-eat food (RTEF) boxes by the DSWD. It also includes non-food items for evacuees such as blankets, hygiene kits, family and kitchen kits, and water filtration units,” Dumlao said.
“Even during heavy rains caused by successive weather disturbances, our disaster frontliners or Angels in Red Vests show up every day to deliver help. Also working with us is Secretary Rex Gatchalian, who since Monday has been personally checking on the disaster-affected families and ensuring their needs are being addressed,” Dumlao added.
In the Ilocos Region, currently being battered by Typhoon Emong, families expressed gratitude to DSWD Field Office 1 for the swift distribution of aid. Among the beneficiaries was Reynaldo Tabag from Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte, who said the food packs were essential as their livelihoods had been disrupted.
Assistant Secretary Dumlao emphasized that the DSWD is maximizing all its disaster response resources to provide not just immediate, but also comprehensive and compassionate relief efforts to uplift affected communities.
“In the hardest-hit areas experiencing flooding and heavy rainfall, our Field Offices are deploying Mobile Kitchens to serve hot meals. Our Mobile Command Center units are also multipurpose—not only do they improve disaster response coordination, but they also provide free Wi-Fi and electricity to those in need,” she said.

NGCP restores transmission line in Northern Luzon affected by typhoons
ANOTHER transmission line affected by the recent series of tropical storms and the intensified southwest monsoon in Northern Luzon has been restored, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said Saturday.
In an advisory, NGCP said the Bacnotan-Bulala 69-kilovolt (kV) line is now back online, restor -
ing power to customers of the La Union Electric Cooperative (LUECO).
“The Bauang-San Fernando 115kV Line is partially energized by NGCP, with the remaining customer-owned and maintained portion still being repaired by LUECO,” the company added.
NGCP clarified that power interruptions may be caused by damage to either NGCP’s transmission facilities or the distribution facilities of electric cooperatives or local utilities. “Specific cities and municipalities affected by the power interruptions are determined by concerned distribution utilities, unless the outage affects the entire franchise area,” it said.
Meanwhile, the weather bureau reported in its 11 a.m. bulletin that Tropical Depression Emong has exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility. However, the southwest monsoon continues to bring rain to the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
SAMRAONG, Cambodia –Thailand and Cambodia clashed for a third day on Saturday, as the death toll from their bloodiest fighting in years rose to 33 and Phnom Penh called for an “immediate ceasefire”.
A long-running border dispute erupted into intense conflict involving jets, artillery, tanks and ground troops on Thursday, prompting the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis Friday.
Cambodia’s defense ministry said 13 people were now confirmed killed in the fighting, including eight civilians and five soldiers, with 71 people wounded.
In Thailand, the army said five soldiers were killed on Friday, taking the toll there to 20, of which 14 were civilians and six were military.
The death toll across the two countries is now higher than the 28 killed in the last major round of fighting between 2008 and 2011.

The President assessed the 30-yearold flood control structure, which has been under repair following significant damage.
The Tangos-Tanza (Malabon-Navotas) Navigational Gate serves as a critical barrier against high tide and flooding along the Navotas River.
The structure’s failure has contributed to extensive flooding across Navotas and neighboring Malabon, prompting both local governments to declare a state of calamity.
Mr. Marcos also visited Tanza National High School, which is currently being used as a temporary evacuation center. According to local officials, 162 families, or 538 individuals, are taking shelter at the school.
Both public and private sectors have mobilized large-scale relief operations to assist thousands of displaced families across Luzon.
Maynilad Water Services Inc. ramped up its humanitarian response across its West Zone service areas, deploying water tankers, mobile hygiene facilities, and distributing over 8,000 bottles of drinking water to evacuation centers in Quezon City, Manila, Makati, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Caloocan, Bacoor, Imus, and Muntinlupa.
“Maynilad remains in close coordination with local and national agencies to ensure timely support for affected families. We are committed to helping our customers recover from this calamity,” said Maynilad Head of Corporate Affairs and Communication Marie Antonette De Ocampo.
Death toll rises in clashes in Thai-Cambodian border WORLD
Both sides reported a clash around 5:00 am (2200 GMT Friday), with Cambodia accusing Thai forces of firing “five heavy artillery shells” into locations in Pursat province, which borders Thailand’s Trat province – on the coast some 250 kilometers (160 miles) southwest of the main frontlines.
AFP journalists in the Cambodian town of Samraong, near the ridge of forest-clad hills that marks the border and has seen the bulk of the fighting, heard the thump of artillery early Saturday afternoon.
A Thai villager reached by phone as he sheltered in a bunker in Sisaket province, just 10 kilometers from the frontier, also reported hearing artillery.

The fighting has forced more than 138,000 people to be evacuated from Thailand’s border regions, with more than 35,000 driven from their homes in Cambodia.

“Impeachment is a political act rooted in the people’s will—no legal technicality should silence it…This is not a battle against one public official but a fight for the rights of the people to hold their leaders accountable,” she said. Abante clarified the House’s response is not an act of defiance but a firm and lawful assertion of its constitutional mandate.
“The House will exhaust all remedies to protect the independence of Congress and preserve the sanctity of our constitutional role. This is not defiance. This is constitutional fidelity,” she said.
“We owe it to the people to be relentless in our duty—because accountability should never be optional, no matter how high the office,” Abante added. Supreme Court spokesperson Camille Ting earlier clarified the ruling does not bar the refiling of a new impeachment complaint after one year, or on February 5, 2026.
The first three impeachment complaints against Duterte were all filed in December 2024. The fourth complaint, filed in February 2025, was adopted by the House and transmitted to the Senate.
For lawyer Jesus Nicardo Falcis III, even if the first three complaints triggered the one-year bar rule, the filing of the 4th impeachment complaint and transmittal on the same day is not covered by the said rule.
He said even if the one-year bar rule is triggered, it should only apply to the first three impeachment complaints and not to the 4th one.
Independent policy analyst and constitutionalist Michael Yusingco, however, warned against defying the Supreme Court decision.
“SC decisions form part of the laws of the land such that they must be obeyed by everyone. To disobey an SC decision is to disobey a law,” Yusingco said.
In a social media post, retired Supreme Court associate justice Adolfo Azcuna Jr. said he believes the ruling was unfair for the respondents and proponents of the impeachment given that it came out with a new definition of what constitutes being “initiated.”
“I respectfully submit that it would be unfair to apply this new definition to the complaint involved in the present case, as it was precisely adopted in reliance on the Supreme Court’s then prevailing definition,” he said. According to Dindo Manhit, founder and CEO of policy think-tank Stratbase, the decision “presents a complex but revealing inflection point in Philippine political and institutional dynamics.”
“While the ruling halts the current process, it does not close the conversation on accountability—nor should it. The Court’s decision is grounded on procedural violations, notably the breach of the one-year rule and a lack of due process in the House’s handling of the complaint,” he said. US... REX wins LCF award for empowering educators
THE League of Corporate Foundations (LCF), a network of organizations advancing corporate social responsibility (CSR), honored Rex Education with its prestigious CSR Medal of Recognition in the Education Category.
Held July 1, 2025, the award recognized Rex Education’s efforts to strengthen the private education sector through its flagship initiative, the Edukampyon Corps of Trainers.
Initially composed of 67 volunteers, the Edukampyon Corps of Trainers was launched to support the private education sector in implementing the MATATAG Curriculum.
The program quickly expanded to meet broader needs, including quality assurance mentoring through the REX QA-SAMA Program and the institutionalization of school-based professional learning communities (PLCs).
Through collaboration with esteemed education professionals, the Corps conducted 17 major training sessions and has since grown to 316 members nationwide, from Luzon to Mindanao, developing 92 unique training materials tailored to the needs of private schools.
Between November and December 2024, the Corps trained 4,711 teachers in implementing the MATATAG Curriculum.
IT WASN’T meant to be a big deal at first.
Rex Education Strategic Partnerships manager Levi Espinosa (4th from left) receives the award on behalf of Rex Education.
Its nine-part webinar series further reached nearly 100,000 educators, addressing curriculum implementation concerns and sharing best practices.
Key to the program’s success were Rex Education’s partnerships with the Department of Education (DepEd), the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA), the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), and academic experts from the UP College of Education and Xavier School.
“The Edukampyon Corps is essentially mula sa mga guro, para sa kapwa guro. A perfect complement to REX’s guiding principle that is para sa bata, para sa mamamayan, para sa bayan,” said Rex Education CEO Don Timothy Buhain.

They weren’t looking to start a business. They just wanted to lend a hand to small entrepreneurs, many of them homemakers, who suddenly had nowhere to sell.
The answer came in the form of a digital storefront—a literal eskaparate or display case— brought online, which soon became Iskaparate.com.
A former banker, Natividad co-founded Iskaparate.com alongside fellow finance veteran Joey Bermudez, bringing their shared experience into a platform built for small entrepreneurs.
“We envisioned Iskaparate as a space where women— especially mothers—could continue selling their products, even when physical markets were closed,” recalled Natividad, the platform’s chief operating officer.
So they started small. Just 33 women from a cooperative in Luzon signed up. They weren’t tech-savvy. Some had never even taken a photo of their products before. But they were willing to try.
That small group has since grown to over 3,000 vendors from all across the country. Online storefront
This small group of “mompreneurs” quickly realized that selling online wasn’t as easy as clicking “upload” and waiting for the orders to roll in.
The Iskaparate team understood that. So they rolled up their sleeves and got to work - helping sellers figure out how to price their products, package them well, respond to customers, and build a digital presence of their own.
That support eventually became Iskaparate Academy, where volunteer trainers started offering free business classes. No pressure, just useful advice, friendly sessions, and tools that could make a real difference.
And the help didn’t stop there. A doctor from UST joined in to offer health webinars. What started as simple COVID-19 briefings grew into monthly wellness talks, covering everything from hypertension to mental health to diabetes management. Some vendors even got access to free teleconsultations.
“It’s hard to run a business when you’re not feeling your best. So we tried to make sure they were cared for in other ways, too,” Natividad said, adding that micro loans are also offered in the platform through a partnership with Maybridge Finance.

Security Bank bags 6 honors at 15th Asian Excellence Awards
held on June 27, 2025, at the JW Marriott Hotel in Hong Kong.
Security Bank received six honors at the 15th Asian Excellence Awards, including Best Investor Relations Company (Philippines), Sustainable
Asia Award, Asia’s Best CEO and CFO (Investor Relations), Best Investor Relations Professional (Philippines), and Best Corporate Communications.
With the theme “The Role of Asian Corporations in Climate Neutrality,” the awards spotlight sustainability, corporate governance, and responsible business.
“These awards reflect our commitment to good governance and sustainability, anchored on transparency, accountability, and ethical banking,” said EVP and CFO Eduardo Olbes.
Security Bank was cited for its excellence in disclosure and stakeholder communication. It also earned the Sustainable Asia Award for embedding responsible practices into its operations.
Individual awards went to Bank president and CEO Sanjiv Vohra as Asia’s Best CEO, CFO Eduardo Olbes as Asia’s Best CFO, and Ropi Dangazo as Best Investor Relations Professional, their fifth consecutive wins in their respective categories.
Ex-banker sets up digital lifeline for entrepreneurs
A bit of everything Scroll through the site and you’ll see an eclectic mix of local delicacies, frozen food, handwoven baskets, soaps, small-batch perfumes, even services like bookkeeping and home repair.
At one point, a vendor offered funeral services. “We drew the line at posting coffins. But hey, it’s a real need,” Josie said. The team has also welcomed barbers, massage therapists, electricians, plumbers— all of whom found ways to offer their services through the platform, especially during the strictest lockdown days.
“We just try to stay open to what people need, and what our vendors can do,” Natividad added.
Expanding overseas
With the local community growing steadily, the team is now setting their sights on FilipinoCanadians, not to build something entirely new, but to extend what’s already working.
The idea is simple - let overseas Filipinos send meaningful gifts and essentials to their loved ones back home, all sourced from small local businesses.
Eventually, they hope to onboard Filipino entrepreneurs in Canada, too, and create a kind of cross-border marketplace that still feels personal and rooted.
A bit of heart
Unlike most marketplaces, Iskaparate charges only a modest one-time onboarding fee of P1,500 and takes a small commission on sales to sustain its operations.
In its care package, Iskaparate offers more than just a digital shelf - sellers receive free training, marketing support, and occasional opportunities to join weekend bazaars or be featured on the radio, helping them grow both their confidence and customer reach.
During holidays, curated gift packages are put together featuring multiple vendors, especially during Christmas, the busiest season of the year.
The model works because the support is consistent and personal. Natividad often finds herself replying to vendor messages late at night, preferring to answer right away rather than risk forgetting by morning.
“We’re here to offer guidance, tools, and opportunities. But in the end, they still have to help themselves. That’s the only way real growth happens,” she said. Othel V. Campos

The truth is, we can no longer be assured that our places are safe from flooding. Areas once considered secure due to their elevation are no longer the rule these days, as floods can surprisingly result from non-stop rain for just a few hours. We saw this during the devastating Typhoon Ondoy, and more recently when several typhoons almost simultaneously entered the country, dumping excessive rains after being exacerbated by the habagat monsoon. Almost all streets of Metro Manila were flooded, and many vehicles were trapped and inundated. Lucky are those who have the presence of mind to bring their vehicles to higher ground. But for those who think the rains would spare their vehicles, they were truly unfortunate. Even before the rain starts during a typhoon or cyclone, include your vehicle in your safety plan. Many malls now accept overnight parking, and their elevated and secured parking is perfect for your vehicle, even for an overnight stay or until after the storm has passed. I’ve seen several new electric cars bravely tackling flooded streets recently, most of them large SUVs. But I can’t help but wonder what will happen to them later on. If gas-fed vehicles can conk out or even develop serious problems after negotiating a deeply flooded street, how much more so for those new EVs or hybrids? There are many
Pinoy ultrarunner Tabios conquers world’s toughest race for 9th time
By Alona Cochon
FILIPINO ultrarunner
Gerard Tabios has once again proven his grit and endurance by completing his ninth Badwater 135 Ultramarathon, a grueling 135-mile (217-kilometer) race across California’s Death Valley—often regarded as the most extreme footrace on the planet.
Tabios, 55, crossed the finish line in 42 hours, 40 minutes, and 14 seconds, enduring scorching heat, punishing climbs, and relentless terrain. Backed by his wife Donna and his steadfast Team 81 crew— Tess Leono, Joseph Winwood, Kenneth Elliot, and Don Flauta— he conquered the course from Badwater Basin (280 feet below sea level) to Whitney Portal (8,300 feet), tackling a cumulative ascent of 14,600 feet and 6,100 feet of descent through three unforgiving mountain ranges—without pause.
Based in New York but originally from Bukidnon, Philippines, Tabios has completed more than 200 races, including ultramarathons in 12 U.S. states. Yet, despite all his achievements, he regards Badwater as unmatched in di culty.
“This race was my ninth, and I’m hoping to do my tenth someday. As a road runner, I consider Badwater the toughest race I’ve ever done,” Tabios shared. “It’s not just about the hills or the distance—you need to train speci cally for the extreme heat.”
For Tabios, success at Badwater requires more than physical preparation.
“Quitting is never an option for me. The mind will always try to convince you to stop. But once you go beyond your comfort zone, that’s where the real race begins. One step at a time.”
This season, Tabios has been in top form. He placed 2nd overall at the Sri Chinmoy 12-Hour Ultramarathon in New York (63.08 miles), secured 2nd place at the Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour Race in New Jersey (38.28 miles), and earned a podium finish in his age category at the Sri Chinmoy Half Marathon in January.
Held on July 6–7, this year’s Badwater 135 featured 100 elite runners from 24 countries. Norway’s Simen Holvik won the men’s division with a time of 21:47:45, while Marisa Lizak of the U.S. led the women’s race in 25:07:31.
With just one more nish to reach milestone 10, Gerard Tabios is far from done. His journey is a testament to resilience, faith, and the relentless pursuit of pushing limits, one grueling mile at a time.

FLOODS, while a natural phenomenon, often leave behind a trail of destruction and, unfortunately, a breeding ground for various health hazards. Pets, being particularly vulnerable due to their close interaction with the environment, are at a heightened risk of contracting illnesses following such events. Let us try to shed light on the common ailments that can affect our furry companions after a flood, emphasizing preventative measures and responsible pet ownership in the face of adversity.
The Flood's Unseen Consequences: A Risky Environment
Floodwaters are rarely clean; they are often a mixture of sewage, chemicals, debris, and various pathogens. This contaminated water can expose pets to a wide array of health threats. As highlighted in the article, "Common Dog and Cat Illnesses That Can Occur During the Rainy Season" by Angkop, the standing water left behind after a flood becomes a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This environment can lead to several serious illnesses that can affect the health of pets . Worse, these illnesses may even lead to the death of your pet if not treated at the earliest possible time.
Waterborne Diseases: A Primary Concern
One of the most significant risks associated with floodwaters is the transmission of waterborne diseases. These illnesses can be contracted through direct contact with contaminated water, ingestion, or even inhalation of aerosols.
Leptospirosis: This bacterial infection is a common threat in flood-affected areas. As the article from NOLA, "Your Pet Can Get This Disease from Flood Waters — And Give It to You,” the author notes that leptospirosis can cause liver and kidney damage in pets. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, jaundice, and lethargy. Prevention involves vaccination and avoiding contact with potentially contaminated water.
Gastrointestinal Issues: Floodwaters often contain various bacteria and parasites that can lead to gastrointestinal distress. This can manifest as vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. According to the Angkop article, the ingestion of contaminated water or food can cause these issues.
Other Bacterial Infections: The stagnant water can also harbor other harmful bacteria, which can cause skin infections, respiratory problems, and other systemic illnesses.
Parasitic Infestations: A Persistent Threat
Floods can also exacerbate the risk of par-
asitic infestations. These parasites can thrive in the damp environment and can easily attach themselves to pets.
Fleas and Ticks: Floodwaters can displace these parasites, increasing their prevalence in the environment. Pets can easily pick them up while exploring the affected areas. Regular flea and tick prevention is crucial, as stated in the article from Four Paws, "Floods: Keeping Your Pets and Livestock Safe".
Intestinal Worms: Parasites like hookworms and roundworms can be present in floodwaters and can infect pets through ingestion or skin contact. The Four Paws article notes that these parasites can cause various health problems, including anemia and malnutrition.
Respiratory Problems: Breathing Difficulties
The air quality in flood-affected areas can
be compromised, leading to respiratory issues in pets.
Mold and Mildew: The damp environment promotes the growth of mold and mildew, which can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory infections. Pets with pre-existing respiratory conditions are particularly vulnerable.
Pneumonia: Inhaling contaminated water or airborne pathogens can lead to pneumonia, a serious lung infection.
Skin Conditions: Irritation and Infections
Prolonged exposure to floodwaters can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin infections.
Dermatitis: Contact with contaminated water can cause skin irritation, leading to redness, itching, and inflammation.
Bacterial Infections: Open wounds or scratches can become infected with bacteria present in floodwaters, leading to more severe skin infections.
Preventive Measures: Protecting Your Pet
Preventing illness is always better than cure. Several steps can be taken to protect pets from the health hazards associated with floods.
Avoid Exposure: Keep pets away from floodwaters and areas that have been recently flooded.
Cleanliness: Thoroughly clean and disinfect any areas where pets have been exposed to floodwater.
Safe Water and Food: Provide your pets with clean, fresh water and food.
Vaccinations and Preventatives: Ensure
that pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations and parasite preventatives. Veterinary Care: Consult a veterinarian immediately if a pet shows any signs of illness after a flood.
Post-Flood Care: Monitoring and Recovery
After a flood, it is crucial to monitor pets closely for any signs of illness. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve the chances of a full recovery.
Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular check-ups with a veterinarian to monitor your pet's health.
Observation: Watch out for any changes in behavior, appetite, or activity levels.
Prompt Treatment: Seek veterinary care immediately if any symptoms of illness are observed. Floods pose significant health risks to pets. By understanding the potential dangers and taking proactive measures, pet owners can help protect their furry companions from the devastating effects of flood-related illnesses. Prioritizing preventative care, maintaining a clean environment, and seeking prompt veterinary attention are essential steps in ensuring the health and well-being of pets during and after a flood.

THAI SELECT FESTIVAL 2025 BRINGS AUTHENTIC FLAVORS FROM THE LAND OF SMILES
From pad thai (stir-fried noodles) to tom yum goong (hot and sour soup with shrimp), to som tam (green papaya salad) and pad kra pao (stir-fried meat with holy basil), Thai food presents complex flavors and textures typical of Southeast Asian cuisine.
So it was with great expectations that I visited the eight booths featured during the grand finale of the Thai SELECT Festival 2025 at the Grand Atrium of Shangri-La Plaza.
The festival showcased eight Thai SELECT certified restaurants, each representing the rich and bold tastes of Thailand: Mango Tree (BGC and City of Dreams branches), Benjarong Manila, Samyan Thai Street Food, Nara Thai Cuisine (Megamalls and Molito Lifestyle branches), Thai BBQ Original Restaurant, and Greyhound Cafe.
executives and distinguished guests, who gathered for the official ribbon cutting and blessing of the kiosk, followed by product tastings and exclusive promos.
Dylan Patisserie is more than just a shop. It’s a whole experience, a space where every product tells a story and every bite brings joy.
Dylan Patisserie is known for crafting excep tional desserts, combining meticulous artistry with premium ingredients. Among the highlights
Y FONDEST memories of past visits to Bangkok and Chiang Mai involve food – lots of street food, to be precise.
“The Thai SELECT seal is a commitment to maintaining the high standard of this prestigious certification – to distinguish the best Thai restaurants from the rest, for using the right ingredients and cooking the dish the way it should be,” Thai Ambassador to the Philippines Makawadee Sumitmor said.
There are about 19,000 Thai restaurants worldwide, of which less than 10 percent have earned the distinction of getting the Thai SELECT certification.
The ambassador said Thai food is characterized by balanced flavors and artistic presentation.
Indeed, the festival offered a culinary journey through Thailand’s signature flavors: spicy, sour, salty, sweet, and umami. Sutinee Vathana, Director of the Thai Trade Center Manila, said: “The vision of this festival is simple – to promote authentic Thai cuisine.”
"We are very grateful to our Filipino friends for continuously appreciating our dishes. Our food reflects years of history, culture, and values, and we are excited to share more authentic Thai flavors during this festival at Shangri-La Plaza” she added.

showcased at the new kiosk are the decadent Chocolate Mudcake, the classic Red Velvet Cake and Ube Dulce de Leche, the mouth-watering Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake, and the elegant Classic Opera Cake together with its signature Strawberry Vanilla Symphony and Chocolate Nouveau. Guests were also treated to an array of colorful macarons available in 18 flavors, chunky soft cookies, and an assortment of artisanal breads perfect for any time of the day.

Pinoy idols making waves on global stage
By Jasper Valdez
AS P-POP groups continue to thrive in promoting Original Pilipino Music (OPM) locally, a new wave of Filipino talent is also emerging beyond Philippine borders, this time, as members of international pop groups. From Seoul to global stages, these young artists are proving that Filipino excellence belongs in the spotlight.
Over the last few years, more and more Pinoy artists have found their way not just into Korean idol groups but also into the global staging, proving that talent, determination, and a bit of luck can take you far. Here are some of the Filipino idols who’ve already made it and are proudly repping the Philippines in the world of music.
JL Gaspar of AHOF
JL first made a name for himself in the local music scene as part of PLUUS. But it was Universe League, a Korean survival show, that gave him a shot at something bigger. Competing against trainees from around the world, he earned a spot in AHOF, a nine-member group under F&F Entertainment. He debuted on July 1, 2025, with the mini-album Who We Are JL is the group’s only Filipino member and brings years of vocal training and performance experience to the team.
Sophia Laforteza of KATSEYE
Sophia stood out on The Debut: Dream Academy, where her stage presence and consistent performances helped her land the top spot in the finale in November 2023. She debuted with KATSEYE on June 28, 2024, with their first single “Debut,” followed by the EP SIS (Soft Is Strong) in August. As the only Filipina in the group, she’s showing that someone from the Philippines can compete on a global stage and hold her own.

THE long-awaited film adaptation of Wattpad’s historical-romance hit I Love You Since 1892 is finally moving forward, but not with the on-screen tandem many fans had long envisioned.
Last week, Viva One officially announced that Heaven Peralejo and Jerome Ponce will be taking the roles of Carmela and Juanito, respectively. This sparked disappointment among loyal fans across social media platforms. Fans of the original Wattpad story were quick to express heartbreak, with many saying the roles should have gone to Janella Salvador and Marlo Mortel, collectively known as MarNella.
For years, MarNella had been closely linked to the novel—from the cover of the book to the music video produced by Marlo himself—the pair were unofficially associated with the project, fueling fan expectations that they were the author’s top and only choice. That belief was confirmed by none other than
appeared in local TV dramas and had a growing fanbase in the Philippines. Born in Manila and raised partly in Argentina, she eventually trained under MLD Entertainment. Her background and language skills helped her adapt quickly, and she debuted with Lapillus on June 20, 2022. Since then, she’s balanced music promotions with TV appearances and modeling.
HORI7ON
Elisia Parmisano, Gehlee Dangca, and Jin Hyeonju of UNIS Elisia and Gehlee joined Universe Ticket with little experience in K-pop, but they gained attention as the show went on. Jin Hyeonju, who is half-Filipina and had trained with other groups before, completed the trio. All three made it into the final lineup of UNIS and debuted on March 27, 2024. It’s rare to see multiple Filipinas in one K-pop group, even more so when they make a strong debut and score a music show win soon after.
HORI7ON was a big step for Filipino representation in K-pop. All seven members—Jeromy, Marcus, Vinci, Kyler, Reyster, Kim, and Winston—came from the Philippines and trained in Korea after being formed through the reality show Dream Maker. They officially debuted on July 24, 2023, with their album FriendSHIP. As the first all-Filipino boy group to debut in Korea, they’ve shown that K-pop is becoming more inclusive than ever. These idols didn’t just show up and get lucky. They trained, struggled, and pushed through a system that isn’t easy, especially for foreigners. Seeing a Filipino on a K-pop stage isn’t just exciting, it means something. It tells young fans back home that it’s possible. And now that Filipinos are finally being seen, it’s clear they’re not just here to watch. They’re here to take the spotlight.
Mia Alfonso, the Wattpad author behind the story, who once publicly stated that only Marlo and Janella could portray her beloved characters. Netizens quickly resurfaced screenshots and quotes from her past posts, expressing confusion and betrayal over the recasting.
Some fans have redirected their disappointment toward Alfonso herself, questioning why she allowed or supported the casting change after years of aligning the book’s identity with the original tandem. The recasting also sparked backlash because of the emotional investment many fans had placed in MarNella over the years.
Alfonso has since urged fans to support the new leads, saying the film will still reflect the same heart of the story. But many readers remain unconvinced, pointing to years of buildup around MarNella that they now feel has gone to waste.
As of now, neither Janella nor Marlo has issued a public statement reacting to the new cast reveal. Marlo did confirm on Instagram earlier this month that he would not be involved in the project.

THE global impact of Squid Game continues, with realworld experiences inspired by the hit Netflix series now available in several cities, including a nationwide rollout in PLDT stores across the Philippines.
SOUTH Korean webtoon creator Cho Gwang Jin, best known for Itaewon Class, encouraged young Filipino artists to draw from personal experience and approach content creation with clear direction during a recent lecture in Manila.
Speaking at “Sketching Beginnings,” held at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and organized by the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines, Cho shared his creative journey with students and aspiring artists. The event was part of the Philippine International Comics Festival 2025, in partnership with Komiket and the Metropolitan Museum of Manila.
Cho rose to international recognition through Itaewon Class, first published on Daum Webtoon in 2016. The story, which follows an ex-convict opening a bar in Seoul’s Itaewon district while seeking justice for his father’s death, was later adapted into a television drama that became a global hit on Netflix.
During the talk, Cho highlighted the “One Source Multi Use” strategy, emphasizing the value of creating content that can expand across different media. He noted that

“All these are interconnected through a single creative plan,” he said in Korean.
Cho spoke about his early interest in comics, inspired by Slam Dunk, One Piece, and Naruto, and his struggles entering the industry. After military service, financial challenges prevented him from continuing school, forcing him to juggle part-time jobs while preparing comic submissions.
“I asked myself: Why do I keep on failing? Why can’t I do this? Am I not a good writer?” he recalled.
He admitted that his earlier work lacked planning and that he hesitated to accept feedback.

HOSPITALITY

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) praised Park Inn by Radisson Davao for setting a standard in the hospitality industry and contributing to efforts that make Davao a more accessible and welcoming destination for Muslim travelers.
Park Inn by Radisson Davao has been recognized by the DOT as the first DOT-accredited Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Establishment in the Davao Region, SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) recently announced.
The certification is granted to DOT-accredited establishments that meet specific standards for Muslim travelers, including religious and dietary considerations. Park Inn by Radisson Davao provides prayer mats, Qibla direction markers in guest rooms, and Qur’ans. It also offers flexible meal options upon request, such as strictly no-pork meals and other Muslim-friendly alternatives.
A dedicated non-pork station is maintained at the hotel’s daily breakfast buffet, while team members are trained in culturally respectful service. Muslim staff members in the kitchen and food and beverage teams also help ensure that guests’ religious practices are accommodated. Guests can also interact with hotel staff in familiar dialects, enhancing the overall sense of comfort and belonging.
DOT Region XI Regional director Tanya Rabat-Tan formally presented the certificate to Park Inn by Radisson Davao’s general manager Sven Toune , director of sales and marketing Liza Gamo , and front office Muslim representative Razul Gregorio
The hotel also participated as a patron sponsor and exhibitor at the Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Expo 2025, held from June 18 to 20 at SMX Davao, another SMHCC property.
The event concluded with the Halal Friendly Culinary Olympics, where Park Inn by Radisson Davao’s Executive Sous Chef Vance Bolivar took second place with his reinterpretation of tiyula itum, a traditional Tausug dish.
Chef Bolivar’s dish, Tiyula Itum Steak Medallion, featured seared beef tenderloin served with a sauce made from charred coconut and spices. Inspired by Chef Aira, a Tausug member of the culinary team, the modern presentation retained the dish’s authentic flavors while showcasing refined culinary technique.

WITH the rainy season in full swing, choosing the right area to stay in Metro Manila becomes crucial. Frequent downpours and sudden flooding can disrupt plans, making it important to find neighborhoods that offer comfort, convenience, and minimal flood risk. Here are some of the best places to consider:
BGC, Taguig
Modern roads, reliable drainage, and everything within walking distance. BGC is built for convenience: Uptown, High Street, SM Aura, and St. Luke’s are all nearby. Even when it rains, you can still get around without much trouble. Rockwell, Makati Quiet, secure, and self-contained.
With Power Plant Mall right in the middle, most people staying in Rockwell don’t even need to go far. It’s a solid choice if you’re after a place that
keeps things calm when the weather’s unpredictable.
Ortigas Center
Right in the middle of the metro, Ortigas is close to malls like SM Megamall and The Podium, as well as offices and transport hubs. Some side streets may see flooding, but the main roads around ADB Avenue and within the business district usually hold up well. Vertis North and Eastwood, Quezon City
Both are live-work-play areas, which help when the rain keeps you in. Vertis North is near Trinoma
DUBAI , a city celebrated for its extravagant desserts and bold culinary innovations, has embraced a sensational sweet creation by Filipino chef Nouel Catis : the Dubai Knafeh Chocolate. This viral dessert merges Middle Eastern tradition with a modern chocolatey twist, captivating food lovers and social media users worldwide.
Hailing from the Philippines, Chef Nouel Catis ventured to Dubai to pursue his passion for pastry arts. With years of dedication, he refined his expertise in blending classic techniques with inventive flavors, eventually leading him to reimagine one of the Middle East’s most beloved desserts.
I recently sat down with Chef Nouel for an interview, and here’s what he shared.
The shift toward heritage-driven cuisine began in 2015, the year Chef Nouel discovered his true niche in the industry. Yet his passion for Middle Eastern desserts traces back to 2008, when he first encountered the rich traditions of Arabic sweets, particularly Palestinian, while serving as head pastry chef at Jordan’s Kempinski Hotel, leading an allPalestinian team. It was there that he was introduced to knafeh nabulsiya, a dish that captivated him instantly. Today, the essence of knafeh infuses nearly every dessert he creates, including its eventual reinvention as a chocolate bar.
“There’s no telling which recipe will go viral,” said Chef Nouel.
“My first was Baby Dynamite in 2015, which I talked about in my 2019 TEDx Talk. I simply tap into childhood memories of my audience—then everything follows. That’s the true AHA moment.”
In the Middle East, people generally appreciate a play of textures, which influenced Chef Nouel’s approach to creating balance. They don’t seek stereotypes; instead, they aim to break traditions.
“Every recipe I create and share with others goes through changes until it becomes the perfect formula. It’s never a challenge..it’s fun! Innovation, for me, is exciting because I am in my element. I am an artist first, and then a chef. People need to recognize that. Here is some trivia: the original formula had a layer of Kinder Bueno simply because in 2022 Kinder Bueno was a trend,” Chef Nouel shared, revealing a lesserknown fact.
“As for how it became the Dubai Chocolate, we also need to recognize the team at FIX, who continued pushing the envelope. Had the dream been abandoned early on, it would have naturally faded away and never been known,” Chef Nouel continued. With Dubai Chocolate gaining popularity, Chef Nouel and his team launched SNA’AP to continue blending cultures through dessert. After nearly 17 years in Dubai, they created the brand to honor every expatriate’s city within the UAE’s diverse community. SNA’AP will feature city-inspired chocolates with an Emirati twist, carrying the slogan: “A Taste of the World, Born in the UAE.”
On the Philippines as a cacao producer, Chef Nouel said, “We were the first Asian country to farm cacao. It’s our birthright to be proud of our beans, which are earthy, rounded, and full-bodied in flavor.”
As a Filipino chef thriving in Dubai’s culinary scene, Chef Nouel Catis showcases Filipino creativity on the world stage. His story shows how innovation and dedication can turn sweet dreams into global success.
