LOS ANGELES – Filipino star Manny Pacquiao’s comeback world title showdown against Mario Barrios will be a test of endurance for the 46-year-old eight-division world champion versus a fighter 16 years younger.

“I’m so happy I’m back because boxing is my passion and I missed boxing,” Pacquiao said after making the weight on Friday (Saturday, Manila time), tipping the scales at just under the 147-pound welterweight limit. Pacquiao – who is returning to the ring after a four-year absence – weighed in at 146.8 lbs during

a packed ceremony at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

His opponent in today’s fight, reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Barrios, was also inside the weight limit at 146.2 lbs.

The Filipino star – whose last victory came against Keith Thurman in 2019 – is aiming to pull off an upset victory in today’s bout. Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 knockouts) announced his return to boxing in May, taking advantage of a WBC rule that allows former champions to request a direct title shot when

coming out of retirement.

He will be facing the much younger Barrios, who will take a 29-2-1 record in today’s contest. Barrios, 30, said he was unfazed by the prospect of taking on living legend Pacquiao, who could become the first fighter to win a major world title after being inducted to boxing’s Hall of Fame.

“I’m approaching this the same way I have all my other fights – I treat it as just another title defense,” Barrios said.

“Manny has accomplished so much, but it’s my time now.” AFP

David: Addiction in all forms slavery in disguise

CBCP rejects push for legal e-gambling

HE head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has rejected justifications for legalizing online gambling in the country, insisting that addiction in all its forms is “slavery in disguise.”

At the 11th Philippine Conference on New Evangelization in Manila, CBCP president Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David refuted the argument of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) that legal online gambling sites allow for better regulation and enable the government to generate revenues.

“The sum total of their reasoning: if we don’t legalize it, it stays illegal — and we lose a lot of money. We could use the money and generate revenues for the government,” David said.

“So I said, why don’t you just legalize shabu as well? Because it’s illegal — so let’s earn from it? That’s the same logic,” he added.

The CBCP head also warned of the broader threat posed by various forms of addiction, including gambling and even social media.

“How many families have been de-

stroyed by gambling debts? How many young people spend hours scrawling, seeking validation in likes and shares, losing the capacity to be present, and losing even their social skills to build natural friendships,” he said.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa earlier expressed support for either a total ban or strict regulation of online gambling, citing its link to mental health problems.

“Many families have become or are addicted to gambling because it’s very accessible. Gambling is habit-forming and behavioral. Either ban or regulation is fine with me,” Teodoro said.

Last week, Pagcor chairman Alejandro Tengco said stricter regulation is what is needed, noting that problems arise from illegal online gambling sites and not the ones licensed by the government. Turn to Page 4

Rody’s lawyers seek to defer ICC ruling on own urgent motion for interim release

AFTER filing an urgent request for the interim release of former President Rodrigo Duterte, his lawyers filed another urgent request for the pre-trial chamber of the International Criminal Court to hold off from deciding.

‘Crising’ leaves 3 missing, P11.5m

SEVERE tropical storm “Crising” exited the country yesterday morning, leaving in its wake a trail of destruction with at least P11.5 million damaged infrastructure, three missing persons, and almost a quarter of million people affected.

State weather bureau PAGASA said “Crising” and the southwest monsoon or “habagat” caused widespread flooding and even landslides in some areas.

Office of Civil Defense administrator Rafaelito Alejandro IV said two people were reported missing in Antique – with their homes hit by massive floods while they were sleeping.

“According to reports, they were washed out to sea, so

they are still missing,” he said.

Another person was reported missing in Palawan after going to sea despite the bad weather, Alejandro said. Meanwhile, over 215,000 people in 495 barangays, primarily in the Negros Island Region and Panay were also affected.

Nearly 1,000 passengers, drivers, and cargo helpers were stranded across the country Saturday as the Philippine Coast Guard suspended maritime operations in several regions.

A total of 8,695 air travelers were likewise affected following the cancellation of 12 domestic flights across various airports in the country yesterday.

The OCD is on red alert and has prepared 3 million family food packs for distribution.

Marcos flies to US, to meet Trump for ‘fresh’ trade deal

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. flies to Washington today for a meeting with US President Donald Trump, in a bid to arrive at a “mutually beneficial” trade deal amid the proposed 20 percent US tariff on Philippine exports. The three-day visit, from July

20 to 22, is being held at the invitation of Trump. It also marks the first time a Southeast Asian head of state will meet with the US leader since his return to office earlier this year.

“The purpose of this visit is to further strengthen the PhilippinesUnited States alliance, to proactively engage the US in all aspects of the relations, and seize opportunities for greater security and economic cooperation,” Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Raquel Solano said.

Solano said the trip aims to reinforce the decades-long alliance between Manila and Washington that will allow both countries to “seize opportunities for greater security and economic cooperation.”

Crackdown continues vs. abusive NAIA transport firms

THE campaign against abusive transport operators at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) continues, with more than 90 vehicles already apprehended.

According to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), a total of 98 vehicles—mostly taxis and vans—have been impounded since the crackdown began earlier this month.

Violations include unauthorized operations, overcharging, defective meters, unregistered units, and even improvised license plates. Other offenses include breaches of franchise conditions, illegal parking, and driver dress code violations within the airport complex.

The joint effort involves the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group (PNP-Avsegroup), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC). Their mission is to ensure smooth traffic and eliminate illegal and abusive transport providers at the country’s main gateway. Joel E. Zurbano

Cebu healthcare grapples with lack of resources

CEBU CITY—A shortage of medical personnel, medicine supplies, and poorly maintained facilities are among the pressing issues affecting Cebu Province’s healthcare system. This was revealed following a series of inspections and consultations in early July, led by Cebu Provincial Public Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan. District hospitals in disrepair and insufficient medicine for pregnant women and patients with chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes were among the top concerns. A call for immediate intervention was made, particularly for a comprehensive program addressing chronic kidney disease.

Cebu Governor Gwen Baricuatro expressed strong support for the province’s medical workforce and vowed to deploy more healthcare staff to district hospitals, the provincial hospital, and rural health units. She emphasized that upgrading the health system is one of her administration’s top priorities. Minerva Newman

C. Luzon police begin ASEAN summit security prep

CLARK FREEPORT—Security preparations are underway for the 2026 ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Social Welfare Development, which will be hosted in Central Luzon. The Police Regional Office 3 (PRO-3) has begun early groundwork to ensure safety and order at the international gathering.

On Saturday, PRO-3 Director Brig. Gen. Ponce Rogelio Peñones Jr. led an initial inspection of the Royce Hotel, the official venue in the Clark Freeport Zone. He personally assessed the facility’s infrastructure, entry points, and coordinated with hotel management on security protocols.

Peñones stressed the importance of early planning, noting that “security for international summits must be both precise and proactive.” The inspection is part of a comprehensive approach that aims to anticipate and mitigate potential vulnerabilities ahead of the event.

Romualdez backs Bagong Pilipinas eGovPH Serbisyo Hub

LEYTE 1st District Rep. Ferdinand

Martin G. Romualdez expressed full support for the Bagong Pilipinas eGovPH Serbisyo Hub, a government initiative designed to make public transactions faster, easier, and more accessible.

Romualdez commended President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his leadership and vision, noting that the hub complements the upgraded eGovPH Super App, which consolidates various government services into a single mobile platform.

He emphasized that Filipinos from all walks of life deserve better service when transacting with government agencies. “This is how we bring our government closer to the people—not with long lines, hours of waiting, and red tape, but with real solutions that they see, feel, and benefit from,” he said.

On Friday, President Marcos officially launched the eGovPH Serbisyo Hub at the Makabagong San Juan National Government Center, calling it a major step toward easier and more efficient government transactions.

Romualdez assured his support for the program and pledged to help secure funding in Congress to sustain both the physical hubs and the digital

app. “Public servants are dutybound to think of solutions that will ease and not add to Filipinos’ daily burdens,” he said.

Since its soft launch on June 2, the Serbisyo Hub has already begun integrating frontline services including medical financial assistance, free legal consultation, job -matching, and applications for clearances and permits—streamlining government support across multiple agencies.

Romualdez’s strong backing aligns with his broader approach in calling on legislators to support open and transparent governance. He previously led efforts to institutionalize public access to bicameral budget deliberations— another step toward government accountability.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which spearheads the digital backbone of the initiative, is currently working with over 20 national agencies to expand eGovPH’s reach. Future updates to the Super App will include driver’s license renewals, passport appointments, and PhilHealth services.

Romualdez noted that digital governance is not just a matter of convenience but of dignity. “Our citizens deserve not just efficient service, but to feel respected and valued by a government that works for them,” he said.

DA probes alleged abuse of rice traders

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday denounced reports of rice traders allegedly buying fresh, wet palay at only P5 per kilogram in Nueva Ecija during the tail-end of the harvest season.

The report was initially raised by the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), prompting the DA to launch a formal investigation.

DA Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Arnel de Mesa said traders involved in such alleged abusive practices may face profiteering charges if proven. “That’s too much. It’s really an abuse of traders,” he said during a press briefing.

De Mesa said DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has already instructed the National Food Authority (NFA) and the agency’s regional field offices to verify the report on the ground.

THE House of Representatives has confirmed that it has complied with the Supreme Court’s (SC) directive to submit additional information on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, reiterating that it followed the Constitution at every stage of the process.

House spokesperson lawyer Princess Abante said the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), as the House’s legal counsel, has electronically filed the required compliance through the Philippine Judiciary Portal and served all parties.

A physical copy will be formally submitted to the high tribunal on Monday, she added.

“The House of Representatives, through its counsel, the Office of the Solicitor General, filed Friday its compliance to the Supreme Court’s directive to provide information on the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte,” Abante said in a statement.

In its submission, the House maintained that all four impeachment complaints were processed in full accordance with constitutional

mandates. Abante explained that the three initial complaints were included in the Order of Business within the 10-session-day period prescribed by the Constitution.

“The fourth complaint, signed and verified by more than one-third of House Members, effectively constituted the Articles of Impeachment and was transmitted directly to the Senate, rendering the earlier complaints moot and subject to archiving,” she pointed out.

The Articles of Impeachment, endorsed by 215 House members and overwhelmingly approved by the plenary last February, accuse Vice President Duterte of graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes.

The charges cite, among others, her alleged misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds under the Office of the Vice President during her concurrent tenure as Education Secretary, her defiance of congressional oversight, and her failure to uphold civilian supremacy over the police and military.

Abante also reaffirmed that Vice President Duterte’s rights remain protected under the impeachment process.

“We reiterate that the Vice President’s right to due process is fully preserved through the impeachment trial itself—where she will have the opportunity to defend herself and present evidence,” she said.

The House’s compliance filing further asserted its exclusive authority over internal deliberative matters, anchored on the principle of

House affirms compliance with SC on impeachment

“In the Compliance, the House also emphasized that, with the utmost respect for the Supreme Court, it was asserting its exclusive authority over its internal deliberative functions, an authority grounded on the fundamental principle of separation of powers and the legislature’s status as a co-equal branch of government,” Abante noted.

“There is no constitutional requirement detailing how individual members must review the complaint before signing, nor is there any basis for questioning their certification under oath that they studied and understood the charges and supporting documents,” she added.

Abante stressed that the House remains committed to constitutional fidelity and institutional integrity.

“The House remains committed to transparency, constitutional fidelity, and upholding the rule of law. We trust that the Supreme Court will accord the same deference to the prerogatives of a co-equal branch of government as enshrined in our democratic framework,” Abante said.

The Supreme Court earlier required both the Senate and the House to provide sworn information and documents on how the complaints were handled, including questions about timelines, procedures, and member participation.

The impeachment trial in the Senate has yet to begin.

8 dead,

several hurt in Isabela road crash

By Dexter A. See AURORA, Isabela – Eight people died while several others were injured after three vehicles were involved in a collision along the national road in Barangay San Pedro-San Pablo here early Saturday morning. The vehicles involved were two Kalinga-bound vans and a six-wheeler truck loaded with pipes. Police said the Santiago City-bound truck, driven by October de Leon, a resident of Echague, Isabela, allegedly encroached into the opposite lane of the road, colliding with the first van driven by Ron Ron Onalam, a resident of Barangay Danao, Lacnog, Tabuk City, Kalinga. It then crashed head-on with the second van, driven by Oseas Calderon of Barangay Bulo, Tabuk City, which was trailing behind.

All eight fatalities were from the second van and included its driver. Those initially confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital were Niches Heizele Cagayongan, Claribel Maling, Jing Romboa, Oseas Calderon, and four others whose identities have yet to be verified. Two passengers from the first van were injured, while another remains unconscious and under close medical supervision. The truck driver also sustained injuries and was brought to a family clinic in Cabatuan town. Emergency responders rushed all victims to nearby hospitals. Authorities have taken custody of the truck and are preparing appropriate charges against its driver.

Trump sues Murdoch, WSJ over Epstein sex bombshell

US PRESIDENT Donald Trump sued media magnate Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal for at least $10 billion Friday over publication of a bombshell article on his friendship with the infamous alleged sex trafficker of underage girls, Jeffrey Epstein.

The defamation lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami, saw the 79-year-old Republican hitting back at a scandal threatening to cause serious political damage.

“We have just filed a POWERHOUSE Lawsuit against everyone involved in publishing the false, malicious, defamatory, FAKE NEWS ‘article’ in the useless ‘rag’ that is, The Wall Street Journal,”Trump posted on Truth Social late Friday (Saturday, Manila time).

The Journal reported Thursday that in 2003, the then-real estate magnate wrote a suggestive birthday letter to Epstein, illustrated with a naked woman and alluding to a shared “secret.”

The lawsuit, which also names two reporters, the Dow Jones corporation, and Murdoch’s parent company News Corp. as defendants, claims that no such letter exists and that the paper intended to malign Trump with a story that has now been viewed by hundreds of millions of people.

“And given the timing of the Defendants’ article, which shows their malicious intent behind it, the overwhelming financial and reputational harm suffered by President Trump will continue to multiply,” it said.

Dow Jones, the Journal’s longtime publisher, responded to Trump’s libel suit Friday saying it is standing by the story.

“We have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit,” a Dow Jones spokesperson said in a statement.

In another bid to dampen outrage among his own supporters about an alleged government cover-up of Epstein’s activities and 2019 death, Trump ordered US Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the unsealing of grand jury testimony from the prosecution against the disgraced financier.

In a filing in New York, Bondi cited “extensive public interest” for the unusual request to release what is typically secret testimony.

Epstein, a longtime friend of Trump and multiple high-profile men, was found hanging dead in a New York prison cell while awaiting trial on charges that he sexually exploited dozens of underage girls at his homes in New York and Florida.

The case sparked conspiracy theories, especially among Trump’s far-right voters, about an alleged international cabal of wealthy pedophiles. Epstein’s death – declared a suicide – before he could face trial supercharged the narrative. AFP

Contaminated Fukushima soil delivered to Japan PM office

DOZENS of bags of mildly radioactive soil collected from near the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant were delivered Saturday to the Japanese prime minister’s office, in an effort to show it is safe for reuse.

Soon after the March 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster, authorities scraped a layer of contaminated soil from swathes of land in Fukushima to reduce radiation levels.

A vast quantity of soil – 14 million cubic meters – has since been stored at facilities near the Fukushima Daiichi plant, with the government setting a 2045 deadline for its transfer elsewhere in the country.

Most of the stored soil contains low levels of radiation equivalent to or less than one X-ray per year for people who directly stand on or work with it, the environment ministry said.

But with few willing to take the contaminated earth, the government took it upon itself to reuse some of the soil to show it is not dangerous.

On Saturday, workers unloaded bags of the dirt from a truck in the front yard of the prime minister’s office in central Tokyo, with earlier reports saying it will be used in flower beds.

A layer of ordinary soil around 20 centimeters (eight inches) deep will sit on top of the Fukushima soil, according to the environment ministry. Opinion polls suggest that Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s coalition could lose its majority in upper house elections on Sunday, a result that might push him to resign after less than a year in office. US pulls out from WHO pandemic reforms deal

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s administration said Friday the United States was rejecting changes agreed last year by the World Health Organization on its pandemic response, saying these violated the country’s sovereignty.

Trump on returning to office on January 20 immediately began his nation’s withdrawal from the UN body, but the State Department said the language from last year would still have been binding on the United States.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, who is a longtime critic of vaccines, said the changes “risk unwarranted interference with our national sovereign right to make health policy.”

“We will put Americans first in all our actions and we will not tolerate international policies that infringe on Americans’ speech, privacy or personal liberties,” they said in a joint statement.

Rubio and Kennedy disassociated the United States from a series of amendments to the International Health Regulations, which provide a legal framework for combating diseases, agreed last year at the World Health Assembly in Geneva.

“We regret the US decision to reject the amendments,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said

in a statement posted on X. He stressed the amendments “are clear about member states sovereignty,” adding that the WHO cannot mandate lockdowns or similar measures.

The changes included a stated “commitment to solidarity and equity” in which a new group would study the needs of developing countries in future emergencies.

Countries have until Saturday to lodge reservations about the amendments. Conservative activists and vaccine skeptics in Britain and Australia, which both have left-leaning governments, have waged public campaigns against the changes.

The amendments came about when the Assembly failed at a more ambitious goal of sealing a new global agreement on pandemics.

Most of the world finally secured a treaty this May, but the United States did not participate as it was in the process of withdrawing from the WHO.

The United States, then under president Joe Biden, took part in the May-June 2024 negotiations, but said it could not support consensus as it demanded protections for US intellectual property rights on vaccine development.

Rubio’s predecessor Antony Blinken had welcomed the amendments as progress.

In their rejection of the amendments, Rubio and Kennedy said the changes “fail to adequately address the WHO’s susceptibility to the political influence and censorship – most notably from China – during outbreaks.”

WHO’s Ghebreyesus said the body is “impartial and works with all countries to improve people’s health.” AFP

Singapore faces ‘serious’ cyberattack—minister

SINGAPORE is dealing with a “serious” cyberattack against its critical infrastructure by a highly sophisticated entity linked by industry experts to China, the country’s coordinating minister for national security said.

The attack, part of a sophisticated level of cyber hacks called advanced persistent threats (APTs), poses a serious danger to Singapore and could undermine national security, K. Shanmugam disclosed in a speech late on Friday.

“I can say that it is serious and it is ongoing. And it has been identified to be UNC3886,” said Shanmugam, who is also the home affairs minister.

Shanmugam did not disclose the group’s sponsors, but UNC3886 has been pinpointed by Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm owned by Google, as a China-linked cyber espionage group involved in global attacks.

“There are so many illegal sites that continue to operate. The proliferation of illegal online operators is our main problem, and unfortunately these are based in other countries and their target customers are Filipinos,” Tengco said.

“Regulation is the key and the answer, not a total ban,” he added. PAGCOR has teamed up with the Ad Standards Council to regulate and pre-screen all gambling advertisements across all media platforms.

Under the agreement, all branded or corporate gambling advertisements including television, radio, online, and outdoor advertising, must be reviewed and approved by ASC prior to public release to curb misleading content and protect vulnerable groups from potential harm.

For his part, Negros Occidental Rep. Javier Miguel Benitez said an outright ban will affect over 40,000 Filipino workers dependent on regulated online gaming sites.

“Banning online gambling won’t make it disappear…it just sends it underground. Right now, over 40,000 Filipino workers depend directly on regulated online gambling platforms. These are real people with real families, relying on these jobs for food, education, healthcare, and a better life,” Benitez said.

Benitez said regulated online gambling generates more than P200 billion every year.

“That money doesn’t vanish – it goes directly into hospitals, schools, infrastructure projects, community programs, and social services that improve our daily lives,” he said.

“Legal, regulated platforms keep gambling transparent and accountable. They verify ages to protect minors, ensure games are fair, prevent exploitation, and help spot and support people struggling with gambling addiction early, something impossible with underground operators,” Benitez added.

Financial guru holds workshop for vloggers

IN a room filled with journalists, bloggers, vloggers, and digital creatives, financial literacy advocate Salve Ibañez delivered a deeply personal and empowering session that combined technical knowledge with lived experience.

Organized by Tala Philippines, the forum intends to equip content creators with the tools, mindset, and strategies to manage their finances more intentionally.

With a background spanning more than two decades in financial education and journalism, Ibañez brought both authority and authenticity to the discussion.

Shedding her married name, Ibañezformerly known as Salve Duplito - has shifted her focus from mainstream media to broader financial education. Drawing on her experience with BusinessWorld, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and ABS-CBN’s DZMM and ANC, she now leads efforts to bring practical financial knowledge to a wider audience through public engagements and digital platforms.

Today, as the founder of Empower and Transform, she speaks as both a financial educator and a co-parent, rebuilding her life with clarity and conviction.

“I started Empower and Transform because I thought I needed passive income. But it became something much bigger, it became my advocacy,” she said.

Real Connection in a Digital Profession

While Ibañez has successfully transitioned into digital platforms, including her own YouTube channel launched after the ABS-CBN shutdown, she emphasized the irreplaceable energy of in-person engagement.

She led the group through a vision board activity, asking participants to distill their goals into one word that could serve as a personal compass. From “freedom” and “security” to “growth” and “purpose,” the exercise sparked quiet reflection and focused intention.

“Even if you just write it down today, you’ll be surprised what happens in a few years,” she said, recalling her own experience of manifesting her dream from a scribbled note on paper.

Stories of Transformation

The session featured not just theory but real-life testimonies. Ibañez shared the story of Aris Baloran, an OFW in Italy who discovered her videos during the pandemic. A gardener and waiter at the time, Baloran reached out for guidance and completed a vision board session with Ibañez over Zoom.

Years later, he is now a registered financial planner, debt-free, and investing in global markets.

Psychology behind saving

“He sold his collection of over 200 sneakers to pay off debts and started investing in the S&P 500,” Ibañez recalled. “Today, he sends me updates every time he ticks off another goal. That’s the power of clarity and commitment.”

Ibañez introduced the concept of behavioral economics to explain why saving money often feels harder than spending it.

She described the brain’s two systems: one that is impulsive, emotional, and reactive - what she calls the “content brain” - and another that is deliberate, strategic, and cautious - her “business brain.”

“Your content brain is great for creativity, but it gets easily tempted by new gadgets, trends, and sales. You need to engage your business brain to ask - is this worth it? Will it improve my income? Is there a smarter option?”

She also warned against the illusion of financial security based on current income, especially in freelance or content-driven careers.

“Don’t budget based on your best month. Budget based on your worst three-month period. Treat your peak months as a bonus, not a baseline.”

Financial freedom

Ibañez offered clear, practical steps for building financial resilience, regardless of income level. Participants were introduced to Tala’s IPON tracker, a tool for tracking small, consistent savings that can grow significantly over time.

She cited the example of a balut vendor in Pasig who saved just P25 a day, gradually increasing the amount over time and eventually building a five-figure emergency fund within a year.

“It’s not about how much you make, it’s about what you do with what you have,” she emphasized. She encouraged participants to start with high-yield savings accounts, then move on to government-backed instruments like the Pag-IBIG MP2 before exploring mutual funds or exchange-traded funds. She warned against investing in stocks without a working knowledge of financial statements.

“If you don’t have conviction in what you’re buying, you’ll panic when the market drops. Understanding your investment is important,” she cautioned.

Ibañez left participants with a reminder that financial literacy is not just about wealth, it’s about intention, peace of mind, and long-term freedom.

“I’ve raised my kids, gone through difficult transitions, and I’m still here, still learning. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to start. Take one small step today, and let that momentum carry you forward,” she reminded participants who responded with quiet agreement. Othel V. Campos

Evro and Shell roll out unified EV charging network

EVRO, the Philippines’ first brandagnostic e-Mobility Service Provider (eMSP), has officially partnered with Shell Pilipinas Corporation to launch the country’s first truly unified electric vehicle (EV) charging experience. This shall integrate Shell Recharge stations into the Evro network, allowing EV drivers seamless access to a wide array of charging points through a single nationwide platform. The partnership works towards simplifying the oftenfragmented EV charging landscape. Select Shell Recharge stations are now accessible via the Evro app, with full nationwide integration anticipated by

September.

Paulo Canivel, General Manager of Evro, highlighted the shared vision: “A sustainable and convenient EV lifestyle is only possible with the efficiency of the tools and infrastructure that support it. With this partnership, we are simplifying the charging journey for EV drivers and likewise setting the foundation for a more connected and convenient e-mobility ecosystem nationwide.”

Evro was developed to address the inconvenience of multiple apps and payment methods required by various Charge Point Operators (CPOs). By

connecting numerous CPOs, the Evro app enables users to locate, access, monitor, and pay for charging sessions at diverse locations, including partner and non-partner providers, all from one interface. This integration significantly expands Evro’s network, connecting users to Shell’s extensive charging footprint, which includes 30 charging points across stations, retail, and commercial establishments. The initial rollout includes ten Shell charging locations, such as Shell SLEX Mamplasan and various mall destinations, aiming to remove key barriers to EV adoption.

THERE is no doubt that Chinese-made cars, especially new energy vehicles (NEVs), are truly dominating the world automotive market as the world slowly, but surely, transitions into electric. A new report coming from China confirms that BYD still stands out as the No. 1 passenger car manufacturer with the highest single-quarter net profit for the first quarter of the year. And BYD is not resting on its laurels, even though it has already overtaken Tesla as the world’s No. 1. This can be gleaned from the said report, which shows a total of 9.155-billion yuan (US$1.28 billion) firstquarter net profit. Instead of keeping it, BYD surprisingly ploughed back 14.223-billion yuan (US$1.98 billion) into its single-quarter research & development – really higher than its net profit. This clearly shows their continued substantial R&D investment, which is indispensable for many automakers since NEV technology is still considered to be in a phase of rapid development. Here in the Philippines, local consumers are really looking closely at the BYD brand because of the truly interesting first impression they have already shown with their series of introduced cars – from sedans to SUVs to pickups.

In a far second place for first-quarter profit for 2025 is Geely with 5.672-billion yuan (US$791 million), while it also had a single-quarter R&D expenditure of 3.328-billion yuan (US$464 million). The SAIC Group is in the third spot, with 3.023 billion yuan (US$422 million) and an overall R&D expenditure that also surpassed its net profit, reaching 3.881-billion yuan (US$541 million).

For your added information, the others in the Top 10 ranking are: No. 4 –Great Wall Motors; No. 5 – Changan; No. 6 – BAIC; No. 7 – Seres; No. 8 – Li Auto; No. 9 – Leapmotor; No. 10 – Xpeng. The report also said that new energy vehicle brands like Li Auto, Leapmotor, and Xpeng are now showing progress, with Leapmotor and Xpeng being just a step away from achieving profitability.

The report also noted that Geely and BAIC’s quarterly R&D expenditures were less than their net profits. While Geely’s expenditure remains a significant figure, BAIC’s R&D spending appears negligible compared to that of other companies. Here in the country, Geely is trying to make an uphill comeback after that PR debacle when many broken Geely cars and SUVs piled up in many dealerships simply because of a lack of necessary parts and supplies. We have to admit that the world automotive market landscape has changed in recent years. Internal combustion engine vehicles are now facing a big challenge with the electrification pushed by new car manufacturers. With the introduction of Tesla as the promising world leader several years back, Chinese manufacturers suddenly came out as its biggest challengers, with BYD surging ahead recently. But while the hybrid vehicles, being pushed by the Japanese, were once considered merely transitional, they have gained sensational market traction lately. And this is shown in another recent report by the China Passenger Car Association, in which plugin hybrid and extended-range hybrid vehicles showed growth of 31.5% and 16.5% respectively in the first half of 2025.

use, it offers a spacious cabin, comfortable seating, and a smooth driving experience. Dongfeng emphasizes the E70 Pro’s global testing and proven reliability, highlighting its battery system’s successful completion of rigorous safety and durability tests, including fire, water immersion, extrusion, and heat dissipation tests.

Globally, the E70 Pro has established a reputation as a trusted electric taxi in both China and South America. Its arrival in the Philippines aligns with the country’s nascent shift towards greener mobility alternatives, suggesting its potential impact on the local transport sector.

From an economic perspective, the E70 Pro presents significant cost-saving opportunities. Drivers

could save up to P47.00 for every 6–7 kilometers driven, potentially accumulating savings of up to ₱783,349 over 100,000 kilometers for individual drivers and fleet operators. Furthermore, its lower maintenance requirements translate to an estimated upkeep of just ₱35,000 over five years. Priced at an accessible ₱1,198,000, the E70 Pro aims to redefine the value proposition of electric vehicle ownership in the Philippines.

Another notable highlight of the event was the introduction of TaxiKo EV, a ride-hailing concept utilizing the E70 Pro platform. This debut offered attendees and transport operators a glimpse into a p;form the way Filipinos move – be it for personal, public, or commercial use.

POC gathers record number of PH delegation to 2025 Thailand SEA Games

WITH the inclusion of numerous team sports, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is assembling what could be the country’s largest delegation yet for the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, set from December 9 to 20 in Thailand.

More than 1,600 Filipino athletes are currently in training for the biennial event, which will take place in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region and the provinces of Chonburi and Songkhla.

“This is the biggest delegation we’ve had in the SEA Games,” said POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino. “Why? Because there are a lot of team events.”

Among the featured team sports are football, futsal, cheer dancing, basketball, volleyball, and winter sports.

Esports will also have a strong presence,

with powerhouse squad Team Liquid earning the right to represent the Philippines in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang men’s event after their 3-1 win over Nine Lives in the national nals. Several of their players will now form part of the SIBOL national team, including standout Gold Laner Kiel “Oheb” Soriano.

To support the athletes’ preparations, more facilities under the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) are being made available. PSC chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio has committed full support to the national campaign and recently met with Tolentino to map out strategies for building a competitive delegation.

“We are prepared to support this— from hiring quality coaches to addressing the athletes’ needs,” said Gregorio. Peter Atencio

Sharapova’s influence drives

Alex Eala’s aggressive game

AT just ve years old, Alex Eala didn’t know yet what kind of player she would become. But she knew what greatness looked like.

It was 2011 when a young Eala rst laid eyes on Maria Sharapova— then the world’s No. 2 player—on television and in person. The Russian star, known for her commanding presence, erce groundstrokes, and unmistakable roar on court, quickly became more than just a tennis icon to Eala. She became the inspiration.

Now 20 years old and steadily rising in the ranks of world tennis, Eala still credits Sharapova as her North Star.

“I look up to many players, but my idol is Maria Sharapova,” Eala said during a recent fan meetand-greet at the Radiance Hall of the Globe Tower in Bonifacio Global City. “It’s the way she played, her mentality, and how she carried herself. That really stuck with me.”

The session, hosted by Globe Telecom, was more than just a fan a air. It was a celebration of how far Eala has come. There, beside her, stood a six-inch action gure—crafted in her likeness— symbolizing the transformation from starstruck child to role model herself.

“It was such a surreal moment,” Eala shared. “I remember seeing Maria and thinking, ‘Everyone likes her—and I’m one of them.’”

A Journey Inspired by Power and Grace

Eala’s admiration for Sharapova intensified in 2015, when she watched her idol battle her way to the Australian Open nals. Although Sharapova lost to Serena Williams, she still captured titles in Brisbane and Rome that same year. Eala, then just a pre-teen, was paying close attention—not just to the victories, but to the style.

That aggression. That unshakable focus. The ability to seize momentum.

“These were the things I wanted to emulate,” she said. And so, she did.

Eala has since honed her skills at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, where her game has evolved from a promising junior to a erce competitor on the women’s tour. Her signature style—an aggressive baseline game with increasing power— bears echoes of Sharapova’s relentless play.

With coach Joan Bosch in her corner, Eala has been steadily re ning her shots and developing the mental edge needed to compete at the highest level. The results speak for themselves: a debut in the main draw at Wimbledon and a career-high ranking of world No. 56.

From Fan to Icon

While the journey is far from over, Eala is already living out a dream that began with a childhood spark—one ignited by watching a tall, blonde powerhouse dominate on the court.

She’s now building her own legacy, inspiring a new gen-

HEALTHY HUMAN FOOD FOR CATS

CATS are known for their selective eating habits. As pet owners, choosing a well-balanced and healthy diet for our pets is important.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They require certain nutrients like taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A. These are found naturally in animal products. While commercial cat food is formulated to meet these needs, some human food can be a healthy and enjoyable addition to a cat's diet, when served safely and in moderation.

According to Dr. Amara Lauren in the “10 Best Healthy Foods for Cats” published in the Pets United website, the following human food can be safely consumed by cats:

• Cooked Chicken (Boneless and Skinless)

Chicken is a lean, easily digestible protein that most cats love. It contains essential amino acids that support muscle maintenance, immune health, and energy levels. Always cook the chicken thoroughly (boiled or baked, no seasoning) and remove all bones and skin before feeding.

Why it is healthy: High-quality protein source; low in fat; gentle on digestion.

• Tuna or Salmon

Tuna and salmon can be offered occasionally as a treat. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, these fish support a healthy coat, skin, and brain function. Choose plain tuna or salmon packed in water (not oil or brine), and serve small portions to avoid mercury buildup or nutritional imbalances.

Why it is healthy: Promotes shiny coat, reduces inflammation, and provides hydration.

• Pumpkin (Plain and Cooked)

Pumpkin is a great source of fiber, which aids digestion and can help with both constipation and diarrhea in cats. Use plain, cooked pumpkin or canned pumpkin without added sugars or spices. A teaspoon added to their regular food is usually enough.

Why it is healthy: Supports digestive health and can help with hairball control.

• Cooked Eggs

Eggs are packed with protein, vitamins (like B12), and essential minerals. Scrambled or boiled eggs (without salt, butter, or oil) can be served as an occasional treat. Avoid feeding raw eggs due to the risk of salmonella and biotin deficiency.

Why it is healthy: High in protein, supports muscle development and energy.

• Cooked Carrots or Green Beans

Vegetables like carrots and green beans are safe for cats when cooked until soft and served plain. They contain fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins like A and K. While cats do not need vegetables in large quan -

tities, they can add beneficial nutrients and variety.

Why it is healthy: Offers fiber and antioxidants; supports digestion and immune function.

• Blueberries or Watermelon (Seedless)

Certain fruits like blueberries and small amounts of watermelon can be given as treats. Blueberries are high in antioxidants, while watermelon provides hydration and a touch of natural sweetness. Remove all seeds and rinds before feeding.

Why it is healthy: Low-calorie treats that support hydration and cellular health.

• Cheese (in moderation)

Some cats enjoy cheese, and it can be a good source of calcium and protein. However, not all cats can tolerate dairy, so introduce it slowly and in small amounts. Opt for plain, low-lactose cheeses like mozzarella or cheddar.

Why it is healthy: Provides protein and calcium.

• Oatmeal or Brown Rice (Plain and Cooked)

While grains are not essential in a cat’s diet, some tolerate small amounts of cooked oatmeal or brown rice. These provide fiber, B vitamins, and a small amount of protein. Serve plain and in very small quantities mixed with protein-rich food.

Why it is healthy: Adds variety and gentle fiber; may help soothe digestive issues.

• Bone Broth (Unsalted and Plain)

Bone broth made from simmered chicken or beef bones (without onion, garlic, or salt) is an excellent way to hydrate your cat and entice them to eat. It is rich in collagen and minerals that support joint and gut health. Why it is healthy: Supports hydration, digestion, and joint function.

Guidelines for Feeding Human Food to Cats

Dr. Lauren reminds owners that while feeding human food can be a great way to add variety and nutrition to your cat’s diet, it must be done with care. Here are a few safety tips:

Moderation is key: Human food should make up no more than 10 per cent of your

Avoid toxic food: Never feed cats onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, raisins, alcohol, caffeine, or artificial sweeteners like xylitol. Watch for allergies: Introduce new food slowly and monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in behavior. Serve cooked food: Raw meat, eggs, or fish can carry bacteria or parasites dangerous to cats.

Consult your vet: Especially if your cat has health conditions like kidney disease, diabetes, or allergies.

Factors Influencing Longevity

While certain breeds are predisposed to longer lifes -

pans, several factors can influence a cat's longevity. These factors can be thought of as the building blocks of a long and healthy life for your feline friend.

Genetics: The Blueprint for Health

Genetics play a crucial role in determining a cat's overall health and lifespan. Some breeds have genetic traits that make them more susceptible to certain diseases, while others possess genes that contribute to robust health and longevity.

Diet: Fueling a Long Life

A balanced diet is essential for maintaining a cat's health and vitality. A diet rich in essential proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals provides the building blocks for a healthy body and a long lifespan.

Healthcare: Preventive Measures for a Longer Life Regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations are crucial for preventing diseases and ensuring early detection of health issues. Early detection and treatment of health issues can significantly increase a cat's lifespan.

Environment: Creating a Safe and Stimulating Home

A safe and stimulating environment can enhance a cat's quality of life and contribute to a longer lifespan. This includes providing a clean and comfortable living space, access to fresh water, and opportunities for play and exercise. Breeds like the Siamese, Balinese, and Burmese not only offer companionship but also the potential for many years of joy. As highlighted in various articles, including "10 of the Longest-Living Cat Breeds" by PetMD, understanding the characteristics and care requirements of these breeds is essential for ensuring their health and happiness.

In summary, while the average lifespan of cats varies, certain breeds are known for their longevity. By providing proper care, nutrition, and a loving environment, cat owners can help their feline friends live long, fulfilling lives.

FOOD AND MEMORY:

Nostalgia, Connection and Happiness

PART 2

FOR many Filipinos, bread is more than just food. It’s a comforting reminder of childhood memories, from early mornings devouring hot pandesal to afternoons enjoying egg pie with the family.

For Wilson Lee, owner of the 86-yearold Kamuning Bakery Café in Quezon City, the connection between bread and nostalgia is undeniable.

“Bread is what we grew up eating. Whenever we have bread or cakes like egg pie, it reminds us of childhood,” said Lee.

Founded in 1939, Kamuning Bakery has endured decades of change by keeping Filipino traditional breads and pastries alive.

simple staple: freshly baked pandesal.

“Pandesal is always a favorite. Our pandesal is soft inside, lightly crusty outside, and not too sweet, just how people remember it,” Lee added.

Lee said customers are often surprised by how childhood memories come flooding back with just one bite.

“A lot of people remember their mothers giving them egg pie or pan de leche. Famous film director Joey Reyes once told me his favorite childhood treat was pan de leche, a sweet, custardlike bread,” he said. He also shared that popular personalities would often visit for their childhood favorites.

“Neighborhood bakeries like us are important because we preserve old traditions. Nowadays, there are so many modern bakeries, but we continue making the classic Filipino breads,” he said. For Lee, Kamuning’s appeal lies in its commitment to heritage recipes.

“Everything is handmade here. None of our breads are mass-produced by machines. Even our cakes aren’t too sweet – they taste just like how they were decades ago,” Lee said.

Lee inherited 385 old recipes when he bought Kamuning Bakery, including more than 100 for traditional cookies, breads, and pastries.

“That’s what makes this place unique. We’ve kept the same recipes, unchanged, to protect these flavors of Filipino culture,” he shared.

Among their bestsellers are beloved classics like pan de coco, pianono, kalihim, and brazo de Mercedes, along with the

“When Marian Rivera came here, she was so happy to see our kalihim. In Cavite where she grew up, they called it ‘pan de regla.’ Even former Vice President Leni Robredo said kalihim was her favorite as a child, but in Naga they called it ‘maligaya.’ It’s amazing how the same bread brings back memories for different people,” he shared.

During the pandemic lockdown, Lee revived a long-lost favorite from his childhood—machang, a savory Chinese-style glutinous rice dumpling.

“When everything was closed, I couldn’t even get fast food. I remembered machang from my childhood and asked our bakers to cook it. After several tries, we got it right, and it surprisingly became a hit again,” Lee told Manila Standard Cravings.

Despite the rise of modern cafes, Lee believes there’s value in sticking to tradition.

“Filipino bakers are just as good as foreign bakers. We have unique breads that don’t exist anywhere else—like pandesal, which you can’t even find in Spain despite the Spanish name,” he said.

To give back, Kamuning Bakery also celebrates “World Pandesal Day” every October 16 by giving away free bread.

“It’s our way of thanking people for supporting us since 1939, and also to remind everyone that hunger still exists,” Lee said.

At Kamuning Bakery, every bite tells a story—of family, of Filipino culture, and of the comforting warmth of home.

CRAVINGS INGS

The President’s favorite carinderia

ALONG the busy roadside of Paterno Street in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, tucked between modest storefronts and family homes, stands a humble eatery that has become something of a national curiosity, not for its interiors or location, but for its most loyal and powerful patron.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has made no secret of his love for Ilocano food. And whenever he’s back in his home province, he almost always makes time for one place: Dawang’s Eatery.

Known for serving Ilocano staples like paksiw, pinakbet, tinuno (grilled pork), dinengdeng, and kinelnat

(ensalada), Dawang’s has been part of the Marcos family’s comfort food landscape for years.

Dawang’s began serving meals in the late 1960s, first at a small stall "at the back of Capitol,” according to its current owner Kevin Dawang. His grandmother founded the eatery, which was later passed down to his father. Since 2016, Kevin, the third generation, has

THERE is something special about hosting your own dinner and luncheon parties at home. No fancy restaurant can match the pull of having your intimate group of significant others in a private setting that you’ve placed great care in curating. You can even say that it’s an art form to master, from setting up your tables to, of course, serving the real star of the show—the food. Before, many hosts would opt for dishes to be delivered for their hosting parties. Not only is it convenient, but there is also a sense of security about the quality of taste when dishes are prepped by restaurants. Still, nothing beats the pull of a homemade menu made straight from your kitchen. If only you could be spared from the tedious task of cooking and prepping, right?

But if we tell you that there is a way to keep your personal touch on your intimate get-togethers?

You answer: Breville Philippines—one of the leading providers of home lifestyle partners that bring restaurantquality dishes straight to your kitchen. One of its newest ovens can transport any Italian pizza lover back to Naples, sans the flight ticket.

Meet the Smart Oven™ Pizzaiolo, the first domestic benchtop oven on the market that can hit up to 400°C. This compact yet powerful kitchen partner has the capacity to imitate wood-fire cooking of brick ovens that have become the signature of Italian cooking. Dawang’s may be a carinderia, with its glass display cases, laminated tables, and simple plastic stools, but for many Ilocanos, it’s a place where tradition is kept alive with every serving of lauya (pork stew), igado, or dinardaraan (dinuguan).

For the President, it’s a reminder of the tastes and textures of his youth.

President Marcos has previously spoken about the importance of preserving regional cuisine as part of cultural identity and tourism.

"Many foreigners are already im -

pressed by the unique deliciousness of our food. So, I hope that we Filipinos ourselves will take the lead in recognizing the various dishes made and cooked by Filipinos," Mr. Marcos said during the celebration of Filipino Food Month earlier this year.

In Ilocos, that story is told every day at Dawang’s, in the simmering pots, in the unchanged recipes, and in the quiet presence of a President who never forgot where he came from.

And whether it’s a tricycle driver or the country's chief executive taking a seat at Dawang’s, the welcome and the meal stay the same.

UP IN the air, our taste buds go, well, sort of awry.

In a previous interview with BBC, Russ Brown, then director of Inflight Dining & Retail at American Airlines Taste, said taste buds and sense of smell are the first things to go at 30,000 feet.

“Flavor is a combination of both, and our perception of saltiness and sweetness drop when inside a pressurized cabin,” he said.

Airlines then have to make their in-flight food a little extra.

“Proper seasoning is key to ensure food tastes good in the air… Often, recipes are modified with additional salt or seasoning to account for the cabin dining atmosphere,” Brown said.

For budget airlines Cebu Pacific and AirAsia Philippines, the challenge is to serve high altitude com fort food.

tions Director JB Bueno Jr. said their catering team consults with culinary experts from various companies.

"Quality is at the forefront of our requirements from our partner caterers. Consistency in terms of taste is a challenge when raw materials from various catering hubs differ in quality and availability. The team manages this through a cadence of product evaluations to align the products and ensure uniform passenger experience," he said.

"Depending on the theme, chosen dishes undergo product development to achieve the desired profile that would mark distinctly as a Cebu Pacific product. Beef Adobo, Grilled Chicken Wrap, Cheese Rolls were ideas by both the team and our partner chefs," he added.

The Cheese Rolls, in particular, are part of the buy-on-board offerings and are a popular tea or coffee pairing for morning and afternoon snacks.

WILL Ashley has been in showbiz for more than half of his life and people have practically watched him grow up on screen. Now at 22, the GMA Network actor is stepping into his own, moving past child star roles and slowly becoming one of the faces of his generation.

Will started out young, appearing in GMA’s Villa Quintana back in 2013. It was followed by small but steady roles in Innamorata , and Alyas Robin Hood, where his charm first stood out. But it was Prima Donnas that changed everything. When the afternoon series became a hit in 2019, Will quickly found himself in the spotlight. His character Nolan Dimasalang became a fan favorite, especially among young viewers, and his love team with Sofia Pablo turned into one of the most followed pairs on local TV. Instead of just coasting through as a teen heartthrob, Will took on more mature roles. In Mano Po Legacy: The Flower Sisters and The , he proved he could handle heavier storylines.

By 2023, he was already on primetime, playing Jerry Keller in Unbreak My Heart, the high-profile drama where GMA teamed up with ABS-CBN. It was a big step, sharing the screen with some of the country’s top stars.

But it was Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition in 2025 that really showed people a different side of Will. Without scripts or characters to play, fans saw him for who he really was—friendly, grounded, and surprisingly funny. His closeness with Bianca De Vera inside the house became a hot topic online, with the “WillCa” tandem gaining thousands of supporters overnight. He may have finished as runner-up, but many viewers felt like Will was the season’s heartthrob winner.

Supporters also love seeing his softer side, a selfproclaimed mama’s boy who never shies away from expressing love for his family, and a proud fur parent to his cat, Jerry, named after his Unbreak My Heart character. It’s these little glimpses of his off-screen life that have made Will even more relatable to his growing fanbase.

More recently, Will showed a different side of his acting in Balota, an entry in Cinemalaya where his performance earned positive feedback and acting nominations. It was a change of pace from his usual TV roles, giving him the chance to take on something more grounded and serious.

He’s also part of the Bar Boys sequel, joining the big-screen follow-up to the hit legal drama film. The project gives Will another opportunity to work alongside established actors while adding more variety to his growing list of roles.

How Gen Z’s expressionless gaze is shaking up workplace norms

SPEND enough time on TikTok and you’ll come across it: the blank face, the unblinking eyes, and the deadpan expression now known as the “Gen Z Stare.”

It’s become the latest target of online debate and workplace anxiety, prompting some to say young people today are rude, unemployable, or lacking in basic social skills.

But what if this look isn’t about laziness or disrespect? What if it’s just about being real?

Critics are quick to call it a “soft skills crisis.” Managers say Gen Z baristas don’t greet them with enough enthusiasm. Boomers wonder why no one smiles anymore. Reddit threads complain about young workers who “just stared at me when I said hi.” But maybe the real issue isn’t the lack of expression, maybe it’s that older generations are used to performative customer service.

Gen Z grew up online, where emojis softened messages and eye contact wasn’t a requirement. Their communication style is shaped by screens, exhaustion, and economic stress. Many young workers are entering the labor force under precarious conditions, facing high levels of debt, limited job security, and rising living costs. Some argue that the expectation to perform emotional labor, such as forced cheerfulness in customer-facing roles, feels increasingly at odds with these realities. Historically, every generation has faced criticism for its communication style. Generation X was once seen as aloof, and millennials were labeled overly sensitive. Now, Gen Z is under scrutiny for perceived emotional detachment.

While soft skills remain important, advocates for Gen Z argue that authenticity and mental health awareness should also be valued. A lack of exaggerated friendliness may not indicate a lack of professionalism but rather a response to evolving workplace expectations.

AWARD-WINNING journalist Jessica Soho will headline the Global Youth Summit 2025, the country’s largest gathering of young leaders and changemakers, set for July 28 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Organized by Global Peace Foundation and SM Cares, the summit aims to empower Filipino youth through dialogue, education, and engagement on issues such as sustainability, leadership, and social good.

Soho, one of the country’s most trusted media figures, will deliver a keynote address to thousands of delegates, drawing from her four-decade career in Philippine journalism.

Gen Z workers challenge old expectations by valuing authenticity over forced cheerfulness in professional spaces

The conversation around the Gen Z stare raises larger questions about what is considered acceptable behavior in the modern workforce, and whether existing norms should shift to accommodate a generation navigating unique economic and social challenges.

Puerto Princesa hotel marks Palawan’s ‘World’s Best Island’ title

HUE Hotels and Resorts Puerto Princesa marked its eighth anniversary with a series of events celebrating Palawan’s recent recognition as the “World’s Best Island” by Condé Nast Traveler magazine.

Located in Palawan’s capital, the boutique hotel launched new culinary offerings, amenities, and entertainment options during a weekend event that also coincided with the global accolade.

The hotel unveiled a revamped menu at its in-house restaurant, La-ud, featuring gourmet seafood, meat, poultry, and vegetarian dishes. Curated by executive chef Edge Limoico, the new dishes include curry mee soup, savory shank, smoked pork ribs, and tuna salad. La-ud also continues to offer its daily breakfast buffet for both walk-in and stay-in guests.

A new group dining feature, a modern take on the traditional Filipino boodle

fight, was also introduced. The feast includes over a dozen local favorites and can serve up to 10 guests.

For families with children, Hue opened the Brightbuds Playclub, a space designed for toddlers and young kids.

The anniversary celebration concluded with the launch of Flamingo Social, a rooftop pool bar offering cocktails and spirits in a setting inspired by its sister bar in Boracay. The opening, led by Hue group general manager Alec Yatco, featured a beach party theme and a fireworks display despite rainy weather.

Flamingo Social offers views of Puerto Princesa’s lush landscape and plays a mix of chillout and dance music in the evenings.

Hue Puerto Princesa, managed by Hospitality Innovators, Inc., features 122 rooms and has earned a 2025 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award. The hotel also

includes function rooms for private events, a gym with cardio and weight equipment, and an in-house spa. Aminah Spa offers Filipino healing therapies and modern treatments, including massages and facials.

Tour services to local attractions such as the Puerto Princesa Underground River and Honda Bay are available through partner agency CML Travel and Tours.

Located three kilometers from the airport, the hotel provides access to both northern and southern Palawan. Robinsons Mall is located nearby. Locally made handwoven crafts from Palawan-based artisans are also available at the hotel lobby.

Hue Hotels said it plans to open a new villa-style property in Siargao Island later this year, in time for the island’s international surfing competition.
