Marcos to meet Trump

Ferdinand Marcos will visit Washington next week to discuss trade and defense relations with United States President Donald Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday.

The July 20 to 22 working visit, which was announced days after the US slapped a 20 percent tariff rate on Philippine exports, was confirmed by Malacanang and the Department of Foreign affairs said Friday, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez said Mr. Marcos is set to meet with Trump, Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to discuss "defense and economic ties."

It will be the first official visit of Mr. Marcos to the United States since Trump took office, and the first bilateral meeting for the two leaders, who previously had an informal chat during the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican in April.

“We have a great relationship with Japan and the Philippines, and work very closely with them on the economic corridor, on maritime security and territorial integrity – and continue to build upon that partnership, and look forward to hosting the president of the Philippines in Washington in a few days,” Rubio said in an interview during the sidelines of an ASEAN ministerial meeting in Malaysia.

A MAJORITY of Filipinos want the government to continue asserting the Philippines’ rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), according to a recent Pulse Asia survey.

Stratbase ADR Institute president Victor Andres Manhit presented the results of the survey during a forum on the anniversary of the Philippines’ 2016 arbitral win against China over the dispute in the South China Sea.

The 2016 Arbitral Award, issued by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague favored the Philippines and dismissed Beijing’s “ninedash line” claim as having no legal basis under international law.

to the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. The two chambers of Congress were given a non-extendible period of 10 days from receipt of the resolution to respond. Both Houses said they will comply with the Tribunal's order. In a resolution, the SC said the documents will help the Court in the full resolution of the various petitions assailing the impeachment complaints.

THE Department of Justice (DOJ) yesterday confirmed the recovery of two more sacks from the lakebed following the commencement of search and retrieval operations in Taal Lake.

In an ambush interview, DOJ spokesperson Mico Clavano stressed that they will proceed with caution as they continue the search in the lake.

“What we did was we sent prosecutors and NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) agents to witness the

retrieval of the sacks. The prosecutors, the NBI, the PCG (Philippine Coast Guard), and the PNP-CIDG (Criminal Investigation and Detection Group) are also there. We move forward with caution because we still do not know what is in those sacks. It is also possible that the contents are not bones, but we are hoping for the best,” he said.

About 24-48 hours is needed to ascertain that what was found are human bones, Clavano explained. The DOJ official said if the bones turn out to be human, whether or not they can be directly linked to the “missing sabungeros,” authorities have their work cut out for them.

Clavano underscored the importance of maintaining the chain of custody to enable them to certify the evidence gathered from the lake. He urged the families of the missing individual to stay patient as the authorities do everything to retrieve what may be found in the lake.

Despite being a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), China has repeatedly ignored the ruling and continued its assertive activities in contested waters.

Based on the results, the National Capital Region (NCR) has the most respondents (83 percent) who agreed that the current administration must continue its efforts in the WPS.

Balance Luzon followed suit with 82 percent, the Visayas with 60 percent, and Mindanao with 59 percent.

Only seven percent disagreed with the Philippine government’s claim over the WPS, while 18 percent remained undecided.

The respondents were also asked about measures the Philippines should pursue to assert its sovereign rights over the disputed territories.

Around 65 percent said the Philippine government should support the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard to enhance national defense and ensure territorial integrity.

Fifty-one percent said the administration should reinforce alliances and elevate partnerships by conducting joint patrols and military exercises with allies and partners.

On the other hand, 33 percent believed the Philippine government should establish defense and security agreements with like-minded partners.

Around 14 percent said the administration should hold leaders accountable and ensure commitment to defend the country's interest in its maritime territories.

Among the information sought are the status of the first three complaints filed by private citizens and the exact dates when the complaints filed by the private citizens were endorsed by a member or members of Congress. Meanwhile, the SC also resolved to consolidate the cases filed before the tribunal. The Senate acknowledged the Supreme Court’s move to consolidate the petitions challenging the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara

On Thursday, Manila said it will seek fresh talks with Washington over its newly-imposed 20 percent tariff on Philippine exports – up from the previously announced 17 percent rate, but the second lowest in ASEAN, next only to Singapore’s 10 percent.

Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque said a delegation will fly to Washington

Meanwhile, Malacañang vowed full transparency following the discovery of the bones that may shed light on the long-unsolved case.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said President Marcos has directed concerned agencies to thoroughly investigate the development, calling it a potentially significant lead in the case. "It is really important to further investigate if these things that were found are truly related to the said case of the missing sabungeros," Castro said during a press briefing. She emphasized that if forensic results confirm a connection, the government will ensure that justice is

Meanwhile, 12 percent said the Philippine government should file formal protests and continue to engage China diplomatically.

Commissioned by Stratbase, the survey was conducted from June 26 to 30 using 1,200 respondents.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro raised alarm over China’s ongoing rejection of the 2016 Arbitral Award, calling it a threat to regional peace and the rule of law.

"It is worrisome that China has continued to reject the binding Arbitral Award and persists with illegal, coercive, and aggressive actions under cover of a revisionist, self-serving interpretation and application of international law, particularly UNCLOS," she said in the same forum.

"The Award not only sets reason and right in the South China Sea, but is like a lighthouse that guides how maritime matters and concerns in the region ought to be addressed," said Lazaro.

The foreign affairs chief described China’s interpretation of international law as “revisionist” and “self-serving,” warning that such actions pose longterm dangers to global maritime governance.

She also noted that the award has been recognized in subsequent legal opinions, including a recent advisory from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on climate change.

Lazaro then emphasized the need to uphold diplomacy while simultaneously strengthening national defense and security capabilities.

She said the Philippines will continue engaging China through formal mechanisms such as the Foreign Ministry Consultations and the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the West Philippine Sea.

"The action of the Supreme Court in referring back to the House of Representatives mirrors the Senate Impeachment Court’s action to carefully follow procedures and establish all facts relating to the initiation of the impeachment articles," he said.

The Supreme Court’s directive came after the Senate Impeachment Court, in a June 10 order, similarly sought clarity on the House’s presentation of the Ar-

"I am truly humbled and honored to be appointed head of the Presidential Communications Office," Gomez, the fourth PCO chief since 2022, said in his message.

"I am grateful to the President for the trust and confidence, and I intend to repay that trust with my 100% commitment and focus on this role."

Gomez, a former journalist and communications executive, takes over the post from outgoing Secretary Jay Ruiz, whom he thanked for his service and for the warm reception from the PCO team.

Senator Pia Cayetano and civil society organizations (CSO) expressed concerns over the selection of former print journalist and public relations veteran Dave Gomez as the next chief of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) due to his ties with the tobacco industry.

According to a statement signed by 10 CSOs, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s decision to appoint Gomez “creates a serious conflict of interest that endangers public trust, transparency, and most of all jeopardizes the health of the Filipino people.”

Gomez was reporter for a major broadsheet before he transitioned to the public relations and corporate communications industries, where he held top executive positions, most notably as Director of Global Communications for the Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corporation. He was also briefly head of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

“Placing someone who spent years advancing the interests of this harmful industry at the helm of government messaging undermines the very principles of public service,” the groups said

Tongol said the Senate is currently preparing its compliance, although much of the information being sought pertained to the procedures followed by the House.

"The Senate remains dedicated to respecting the judicial process and the sub judice rule on this matter that is why it will prudently refrain from giving any further comments in public, as should all parties," he said.

THE House of Representatives also said it will comply with a Supreme Court (SC) directive, House spokesperson Atty. Princess Abante said. Abante confirmed that the House received a copy of the high court’s July

Trump threatened this week to impose punitive tariffs on more than 20 countries if they did not strike deals with Washington by August 1.

of Gomez’s appointment.

“It risks turning the government’s voice into a vehicle for industry influence, weakening hard-won gains in tobacco control and public health,” they added.

Cayetano, a public health advocate, echoed this position, according to a news report aired over GMA’s Super Radyo DZBB. She conveyed doubts that Gomez would be able to defend public interests when it comes to health-related issues, particularly involving the tobacco industry.

In view of these concerns, the CSOs urged the Commission on Appointments to reject Gomez’s appointment when legislative sessions for the 20th Congress open later this month.

“Confirming this appointment is an endorsement of placing an architect of addiction in charge of shaping national discourse. Such a move gravely undermines the principle that public office is a public trust and opens the door for other harmful industries to gain influence in government,” they said.

The groups include the Medical Action Group, Child Rights Network, Psoriasis Philippines, Healthy Philippines Alliance (HPA), HPA – Youth Network, Social Watch Philippines, Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations, Youth for Mental Health Coalition, Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development Foundation Inc., and Health Justice Philippines.

Six survivors of Houthi raid back in PH

SIX of the 17 Filipino crew members from the ill-fated cargo vessel, MV Magic Seas, arrived separately yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in Pasay City and Clark International Airport in Pampanga.

The 17 crewmen escaped the assault by suspected Houthi rebels on their ship on July 6 while they were cruising the Red Sea near Hodeidah, Yemen. The tanker was carrying iron and fertilizers from China enroute to Turkey when attacked.

Three of the seafarers arrived at NAIA around 4:30 p.m. and were warmly welcomed by a whole-ofgovernment team led by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Assistant Secretary Francis Ron De Guzman and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Deputy Administrator Ryan Vincent Uy. Three other crew members arrived thirty minutes earlier at Clark International Airport. The seafarers received financial assistance of P75,000 each from the DMW's AKSYON Fund and OWWA’s Emergency Repatriation Fund. Additionally, DSWD provided P10,000 each, while the MIAA Medical Team conducted health check-ups for the returning sailors.

DMW Assistant Secretary De Guzman assured the seafarers that the government will support their reintegration and provide further assistance as ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos.

expiration, and Ad Standards Council permit number. All out-of-home gambling advertisements — including those on billboards, trains, buses, jeepneys, taxis, and other public spaces — must then be taken down by August 15, the agency said.

In a statement yesterday, PAGCOR chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco said the move underscores the agency’s commitment to fostering a safer and more responsible gaming environment in the Philippines.

“While PAGCOR is mandated to regulate the gaming industry and generate revenues for nation-building, we do not want to encourage a culture of gambling addiction,” he said.

“Regulating excessive and pervasive gambling advertisements is a critical step in protecting vulnerable sectors of society, especially the youth," Tengco added.

Moving forward, he stressed that only institutional or responsible gaming campaigns will be allowed, subject to PAGCOR approval.

Tengco, however, insisted that problems linked to online gambling in the country are largely caused by illegal websites, not those licensed by the state gaming regulator.

The remark came after several lawmakers filed bills seeking to regulate or ban online gambling.

For his part, Akbayan party-list Rep. Chel Diokno lauded PAGCOR’s order to remove all e-gambling billboard ads.

“This is a significant win, as their directive aligns with one of the key objectives of House Bill No. 1351, or the Kontra E-Sugal bill, recently filed by the Akbayan Reform bloc,” he said in a statement.

“We also urge PAGCOR to expand this order to include gambling-related advertisements on social media platforms to curb their reach and influence,” Diokno added.

PCG arms ships patrolling WPS with heavier guns

THE Philippine Coast Guard will install heavy artilleries on its ships patrolling the West Philippine Sea (WPS) in light of constant harassment by Chinese vessels.

PCG spokesperson for WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela said the heavier weaponry will be set up on the two 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRV), the BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Melchora Aquino.

“In terms of weapon system, the Coast Guard has scheduled the installation of the 30-millimeter remote-controlled stabilized naval gun system on our 97-meter vessels,” Tarriela said in his remarks during the commemoration of the 9th anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award.

The PTV program is part of a national strategy to equip all 1,493 local government units (LGUs) with fully functional emergency medical vehicles, deemed unprecedented in Philippine history.

If completed this year, it would mark the first time that every town and city in the country has at least one govern-

ment-issued ambulance-type vehicle, ready to respond to emergencies.

“As the first responders in any crisis, our LGUs must be fully equipped. These are not mere transport units — they are instruments of hope and survival,” the Leyte lawmaker said.

“They will bring urgent care to communities where clinics or hospitals may be hours away,” he noted.

BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Melchora Aquino were modelled after the Japan Coast Guard Kunigami-class vessel. It also has a maximum speed of up to 24 knots and an endurance of not less than 4,000 nautical miles.

The PCG deployed BRP Teresa Magbanua to monitor China’s alleged reclamation activities in Sabina Shoal, as crushed corals were found dumped on the seabed of the contested territory on April 2024. The ship dropped anchor in the shoal for five months.

Makati gov’t wants subway deal quashed

2025 UP Gawad Plaridel now accepts nominations

THE University of the Philippines College of Media and Communication (UP CMC) is now accepting nominations for the 2025 Gawad Plaridel—the university’s highest award for outstanding media practitioners who demonstrate excellence and ethical integrity in their field.

This year’s distinction will spotlight an individual in journalism, recognizing a body of work that upholds truth, accountability, and the highest standards of the profession.

Named after Marcelo H. del Pilar, whose pen name was Plaridel, the award honors his legacy as a reformist journalist and editor of La Solidaridad. Del Pilar exemplified excellence, integrity, and a deep commitment to public service—values the award seeks to uphold.

UP CMC Professor emeritus Nicanor Tiongson, former Dean and founder of Gawad Plaridel said that the circumstances that prompted the establishment of the award in 2004 persist after two decades.

“The need to study the products of media and evaluate them from the perspective of truth and people empowerment as well as the need to recognize excellence and integrity among media practitioners who can be held up as role models in an industry fraught with compromise, corruption and commercialism—have not changed,” he said.

CAAP, NBI probe fake pilot license syndicate

THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and the National Bureau of Investigation are investigating a syndicate involved in the production of fake licenses for pilots and aircraft technicians.

This came after the entrapment and arrest of an individual described by the NBI as a “delivery boy” working for the syndicate.

Both agencies are not discounting the possibility that the syndicate is working in cahoots with errant officials from CAAP. Before the entrapment, CAAP Director General Raul Del Rosario requested assistance from the NBI after receiving information about a group issuing fake licenses for pilots and aircraft technicians. The operation successfully prevented potential buyers from using these fraudulent licenses. Joel Zurbano

Disaster Response Management Bureau director Maria Isabel Lanada said the agency has delivered over 167,000 boxes of family food packs and non-food items to families affected by disasters across several regions.

“If we start off with ‘Bising,’ the total cost of aid is P8.5 million. For ITCZ-affected families, P1.7 million. For Kanlaon, P192 million,” she said.

The DSWD assistance included family food packs, other food supplies and essential non-food items.

The department remains ready to respond to emergencies with adequate stockpiles and standby funds in place, Lanada said.

“We will not have a shortage of family food packs. If you look at it, there are standby funds. Field offices and the central office have P3 million each. The warehouse capacity of the regions, four million packs, the capacity. Those pre-positioned are at three million packs as of this hour,” she said. Australia to aid PCG with P110-m new drones, tech

AUSTRALIA is set to provide P110 million worth of additional drones and maritime domain awareness-related technology to the Philippine Coast Guard, outgoing Australian Ambassador to the Philippines HK Yu announced Friday.

Speaking at the Stratbase ADRI forum in Makati City, Yu said the new assistance package would be delivered over the next couple of years and would include not only equipment but also training and integration support.

“Our commitment goes further than physical assets. It also includes operational training, support, and an integration package,” she said.

“This capability uplift is another example of Australia’s ongoing commit-

ment to provide tangible assistance to the Philippines to boost its maritime domain awareness.”

The new assistance is in addition to the P34 million worth of drones and operator training Australia has recently provided to the PCG.

In April, Australia turned over 20 world-class aerial drones to the Philippines, equipment it hopes would bolster the PCG’s strategic maritime domain awareness capabilities.

The drones were given as part of Canberra’s civil maritime cooperation with Manila, which also includes vessel remediation, postgraduate scholarships, operational training, marine protection, and annual Law of the Sea courses.

Beyond the provision of equipment,

Canberra is stepping up its cyber support for the PCG, citing its role as a front-liner not only at sea but also in the country’s cyberspace.

“Through the DFAT’s (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) Southeast Asia and Pacific Cyber Program, we are stepping up cyber capacity building support to the Philippines as a priority partner country,” she said.

“Australia is committed to supporting the PCG, the Philippine National Police, and various other departments as they work to boost their capabilities to mitigate and respond to cyber incidents.”

Last year, Yu announced that Australia would double its civil maritime cooperation commitment with the Philippines to P649 million from 2025 to 2029.

Marcos vetoes Nat’l Polytechnic University bill

PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. vetoed a bill that would have converted the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) into the National Polytechnic University, citing the school’s failure to comply with longstanding requirements for institutional assessment.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said on Friday the veto was consistent with a 2016 directive mandating an assessment of higher education institutions seeking national university status.

“The President vetoed the bill because there was no compliance with the required assessment,” Castro told reporters during a media briefing.

“The directive has been in place since 2016, and as of now, there has been no proof that the necessary evaluation has been completed,” she added. Online reports had earlier claimed that the measure had lapsed into law due to inaction by the President. However, Castro clarified the bill had been actively vetoed. When asked for specific details on which requirements the PUP failed to meet, Castro said the information she received did not outline particular deficiencies, but emphasized the need for further institutional review.

“It was based on the reassessment of what has been accomplished by the university,” she said. Despite the veto, Malacañang expressed continued support for PUP’s aspirations to gain national university status in the future.

If AI were to fool anyone

…I WOULD rather lie a million times about what I have in the flesh. Or not at all.

But seriously, how can the world become so obsessed with the use of nonhuman technologies for production?

Last Thursday, I came across a post from the FTTM page while I was taking my run. I scrolled upon a photo of a certain event organized by a certain private school in Taguig: an art contest, sure. Designed for students who would wish to showcase their skill in producing their craft from their own creative minds. Timely enough for students, too, whose classes for the current school year have commenced a month ago. Except that this art contest…was an AI art contest.

In case you missed it, the world of cyberspace has been buzzing around about the use of Artificial Intelligence.

AI has become the leading force in shaping how media and art are being made and shaped through their generated works. However, misuse can no longer be light as many have already exploited its capacity.

It was my show of disaffection that shunned my mood upon looking at the post.

AI has been normalized in the way people would write, do math, seek answers and, possibly, live.

I could assume one could literally start and end a given day through AI. What would be his morning routine? What’s for breakfast? What are the things needed to be done? It’s as if these things can take place in today’s reality. But no, I had to look at it again and read the entire post.

Any participant can only sit down and enter any website to access what its adherents call the “mother of knowledge” in creating any given idea.

As the organizers have laid the theme, they could only think of key words and phrases that would enable them to visualize their “art.”

Creativity, as they suggest, can go beyond the use of a brush.

To say they were inviting “visionaries” is already a joke to begin with. I mean, you can tell an AI art by just looking at it at face value. From the billboards you would see to the “Ghibli style” portraits online, people would only copy existing styles to their

prompts to demonstrate its “wonder”.

Again, you can really tell a work of AI by your own experience.

Take The Velvet Sundown as an example.

The “band” has garnered attention from the music community these past few months.

For a new “artist” in the scene, they have managed to garner a million listeners on Spotify -- that’s already a huge feat for anyone who would want to make their melodies heard without the hustle of record executives.

The world is set to see how AI can work beyond the norm

One song I managed to take a glance at on YouTube was, well, written decently, titled “Dust on the Wind”, their breakout single. It was simple and laidback, yes, only because this could potentially stand out against the ongoing trend of glorifying drugs, sex, and heartbreak.

This wasn’t anything similar to Hamilisch or Bacharach, but this had potential.

Yet, for all its best points being glorified, one thing has been exposed about this “band” and its repertoire.

The Velvet Sundown is a group that takes pride in anything but.

You wouldn’t see them promoting this single on any television show.

You wouldn’t see them taking part in a gig or two.

You will never even get to read about them as a group.

Because The Velvet Sundown is a fake band. A one-man show done through the deceptive power of AI.

And what about their singing? I could hear traces of its computer-generated fakery in it. So, there we have it. The world is set to see how AI can work beyond the norm.

But AI am not buying any sorry reasons from anyone who would take pride in the abuse of AI.

Danes reluctant to embrace retirement at 70

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – On paper, Kirsten Evans is among the first group of Danes who have to wait until age 70 to retire with a full pension, but she has no intention of waiting that long.

Denmark’s parliament in May adopted a law raising the retirement age to 70 by 2040, from the current age of 67. But Evans, a 53-year-old bank employee with a solid financial footing, said she plans to retire around 65 or 66 -- even if it means she won’t earn a full pension.

“I think 70 is old,” she told AFP. “You want to benefit on the other end and still have a good life afterwards,” she said. As many Western countries grapple with how to stretch pensions to cover aging populations, Denmark indexed the official retirement age to life expectancy in 2006 and has revised it every five years.

In 2030, the retirement age will increase to 68 and in 2035, it will rise to 69. But those born after Dec. 31, 1970 -- including Evans -- will have to wait until age 70. Few people actually work to the legal retirement age in Denmark.

In 2022, when the official retirement age was 67, the actual average retirement age was around 64, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

In 2030, the retirement age will increase to 68 and in 2035, it will rise to 69

About 20 percent of retirees in Denmark retire because they can’t find a job or are too sick to continue, according to Aske Juul Lassen, an ethnologist at the University of Copenhagen who specialises in senior working life.

“For those 20 percent, it makes a big difference whether the retirement age rises again,” he said, stressing that “inequities are rising with age”.

The gap risks widening between those able to retire early thanks to strong finances and others, said Damoun Ashournia, chief economist at the Danish Trade Union Confederation.

“Very few people actually retire at

Taal Lake raises hopes

NEWS reports on the start of diving in Taal Lake for bodies of missing cockfighting enthusiasts and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s assurance that justice will be served raises hopes among surviving kin and others keenly watching the developments.

The other day, Philippine Coast Guard salvage divers started plunging into 172-meter depths of the 234-square kilometer freshwater lake which borders Taal Volcano, a large volcanic caldera formed by very large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago.

A glimmer of hope gallops from the statement of Department of Justice spokesperson Mico Clavano that remains of missing cockfight enthusiasts or sabungeros, first reported three years ago, may be retrieved from the lake, whose volcano last erupted in Dec. 2024.

With authorities saying the search has begun and a sack containing what appeared to be charred human bones has been recovered by divers, the case appears to parallel a quote from Lewis Caroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – “curiouser and curiouser” which underlines wonder and confusion, if bewilderment, as observers of the case and relatives experience the

the official retirement age. But that is not an opportunity our members have,” Ashournia said.

Camilla Rasmussen, a 37-year-old union member who works as a gastroenterology nurse at a Copenhagen hospital, is convinced that she will not be physically able to work until age 70.

“That would be really hard for me, walking 10,000 steps every day,” she said.

“If I’m here when I’m 70, I think it’s not fair for the patients,” she added.

“Already today, we see that twothirds of our members have retired prior to the official retirement age. And that’s due to them being worn out and doing hard physical work,” Ashournia said.

Denmark’s pension system is made up of several parts. There is a universal public pension, currently set at

strange and illogical world of Taal and this cockfighting issue.

Filipinos are watching how this hideous chapter will develop, with authorities appearingly already on the trail of suspects

The bones were found near the location where the self-confessed whistleblower claimed the missing sabungeros were transported before being dumped in Taal Lake, Calabarzon Police Chief Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky told media. The DOJ said either the CIDG or the National Bureau of Investigation,

7,198 kroner ($1,130) per month, plus two complementary employer-funded pensions invested in pension funds— one mandatory and one optional.

Finally, some people also save money privately for retirement. Ashournia said he believed that raising the retirement age to 70 was the only way to finance Denmark’s cradle-to-grave welfare state.

“As the population ages and life expectancy increases, if we want to deliver the same public services we do today, we need to secure public finances,” he said.

However, he criticized the automatic five-year increases in the retirement age, a practice in place since 2006.

Under these rules, the retirement age in 2070 will be 74.

For Erik Simonsen, deputy head of the Confederation of Danish Employ-

through forensic examination, would certify whether the remains belong to humans.

The stool pigeon has appeared in televised interviews under the alias ‘Totoy,’ and revealed his identity as Julie ‘Dondon’ Patidongan, a longtime farm manager and former trusted aide of businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, a suspect in the case of the missing sabungeros, who has denied any involvement.

Patidongan is now under the government’s protective custody.

Surviving kin also raised hopes when President Marcos said he would show no favor – no matter how powerful the accused is or are – in ensuring justice in the case of the missing sabungeros, according to Press Undersecretary Claire Castro. According to Patidongan, the sabungeros caught cheating in the games were abducted, corralled, and then turned over to another group of people.

He added the 34 sabungeros were kidnapped, killed, and most likely dumped in Taal Lake, Batangas, and identified in his statement to law enforcement authorities the mastermind behind the disappearances.

We are with other Filipinos in watching how this hideous chapter will develop, with authorities appearingly already on the trail of suspects.

ers, this is the only way forward.

“It would be the most intelligent way to go on, to keep the system. So the older we get, then we have to work a little bit more,” Simonsen said.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, 47, has said she believes a review of the system will be needed once the retirement age hits 70.

“We no longer believe that the retirement age should be increased automatically,” she told daily Berlingske in August 2024.

In line with a review by a government-appointed working group, the Danish Trade Union Confederation said it would like to see a slowdown in the rate of increases.

“In the future, we can raise it by only half a year for every year that life expectancy increases,” said Ashournia. AFP

US State Dep’t layoffs coming ‘soon’

WADHINGTON, DC – The US State De-

partment said Thursday (Friday Manila time) it will “soon” implement a plan to reduce its workforce, after the Supreme Court cleared the way for mass layoffs sought by President Donald Trump.

“In May, the secretary reviewed and approved thoughtful plans submitted by the bureaus, which included a targeted reduction in domestic workforce,” Michael Rigas, deputy secretary of state for management and resources, said in a statement.

“Soon, the department will be communicating to individuals affected by the reduction in force,” said Rigas.

A senior State Department official told journalists that the emailed notifications would be sent “in one day.”

The announcement by the department came just two days after the Supreme Court lifted a block imposed by a lower court on Trump’s plans to potentially lay off tens of thousands of government employees. AFP

Nigeria rejects US migrant deportations

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria pushed back on accepting Venezuelans deported from the United States on Thursday, as US media reported President Donald Trump was urging African countries to take in deportees from around the world.

Deporting people to third countries has been a hallmark of the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented migrants, notably by sending hundreds to a notorious prison in El Salvador.

“The US is mounting considerable pressure on African countries to accept Venezuelans to be deported from the US, some straight out of prisons,” Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said in an interview with Channels Television.

“It will be difficult for Nigeria to accept Venezuelan prisoners,” he added.

Tuggar also suggested the US motivation for threatening tariffs against the BRICS political bloc -- of which Nigeria is a member -- was related to the issue of deportations. His comments came as Trump met with the leaders of five west African nations in the White House. His administration was pushing them to accept deportees from around the world, the Wall Street Journal reported. AFP

Cambodia to pass laws allowing citizenship strip

PHNOM PENH – Cambodian lawmakers amended the Constitution Friday paving the way for people charged with foreign collusion to be stripped of their citizenship, despite concerns such a law could be used to silence government critics.

Rights groups have long accused Cambodia’s government of using draconian laws to stifle opposition and legitimate political dissent.

All of Cambodia’s 125 lawmakers, including Prime Minister Hun Manet, voted unanimously to change the wording of the constitution to say “receiving, losing and revoking Khmer nationality shall be determined by law,” AFP journalists saw.

The constitution previously read “no Khmer citizen shall be deprived of their nationality, exiled, or extradited to another country except through mutual agreement”. AFP

Trump to visit flood-ravaged Texas amid scrutiny

Texas on Friday as questions mounted over the response to flash floods that have left at

The Republican leader and First Lady Melania Trump will meet first responders and local officials in central Texas’s Hill Country, a week after heavy rainfall and an overflowing river swept away houses, trees, cars and people.

They were due around midday in Kerrville, a city in the worst-affected Kerr County where at least 96 people died.

“I would have done it today, but we’d

just be in their way,” Trump told reporters when asked on Sunday about visiting the impacted communities.

The urgent search for more than 170 missing people, including five girls who were at summer camp, entered the eighth day as rescue teams combed through mounds of debris and mud.

But with no live rescues reported this week, worries have swelled that the death toll could still rise.

Trump has brushed off questions about the impact of his cuts to federal agencies on the response to the flood, which he described as a “100-year catastrophe” that “nobody expected.”

On Thursday, Homeland Security Department head Kristi Noem defended the immediate response as “swift and efficient.”

But she previously said Trump wanted to “upgrade the technologies” of the “ancient” weather warning system.

The floods, among America’s deadliest in recent years, have also reopened questions about Trump’s plans to phase out disaster response agency FEMA in lieu of greater state-based responsibility.

FEMA began its response to the Texas flash floods over the weekend after Trump signed a major disaster declaration to release federal resources. AFP

Trump threatens Canada with 35 percent tariff rate starting Aug 1

WASHINGTON, DC – Canada will face a 35 percent tariff on exports to the United States starting Aug. 1, President Donald Trump said Thursday (Friday in Manila) in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

It was the latest of more than 20 such letters issued by Trump since Monday, as he continues to pursue his trade war threats against dozens of economies.

Canada and the US have been locked in trade negotiations in hopes of reaching a deal by July 21, but the latest threat appeared to have shifted that deadline.

Both Canada and Mexico are trying to find ways to satisfy Trump so that the free trade deal uniting the three countries -- known as the USMCA -- can be put back on track.

“Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will

continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1,” Carney posted on social media platform X Thursday night.

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement replaced the previous NAFTA accord in July 2020, after Trump successfully pushed for a renegotiation during his first term in office.

It was due to be reviewed by July next year, but Trump has thrown the process into disarray by launching his trade wars after he took office in January. Canadian and Mexican products were initially hard hit by 25 percent US tariffs, with a lower rate for Canadian energy. Trump targeted both neighbors, saying they did not do enough

KYIV – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US top diplomat Marco Rubio held “frank” talks on the Ukraine war during a meeting Thursday, both sides said, as Washington hit out at Moscow’s lack of “flexibility.”

The US secretary of state said Lavrov shared new ideas on resolving the conflict which he promised to present to US President Donald Trump, but played down the prospect of a breakthrough.

The pair met hours after Moscow pummeled Kyiv for a second straight night and as the United Nations said the number of victims from Russian attacks was at its highest level in three years.

Trump, who forced the warring countries to open negotiations for the first time in three years, this week accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of talking “bullshit” on Ukraine.

The US leader’s efforts to secure a ceasefire have failed to extract any concessions from the Kremlin, despite multiple calls with Putin.

Rubio told reporters Lavrov had floated something “new” on the conflict, but did not give details.

“It’s not a new approach. It’s a new idea or a new concept that I’ll take back to the president to discuss,” he said. He added that it was not something that “automatically leads to peace, but it could potentially open the door to a path.”

The US diplomat said he had also conveyed Trump’s anger that the more than three-year war, triggered by Russia’s 2022 invasion, was still ongoing, criticizing Moscow’s lack of “flexibility”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the United States would deliver more weapons to Kyiv and that he had “specific dates” on when they would arrive, in response to an AFP question. Zelenskyy said in an X post that Ukraine was “ready” for different approaches to “scale up protection”, including by “purchasing a large defense package from the United States, jointly with Europe”.

Trump seemed to back up such an agreement. In an interview with American broadcaster NBC late on Thursday, he said NATO was “paying” the United States for weapons to send to Ukraine. AFP

Swiatek whips Bencic, sets Wimby finale vs. Anisimova

LONDON—Iga Swiatek breezed into her first Wimbledon final on Thursday but hopes of a dream match-up with Aryna Sabalenka were dashed when the top seed was stunned by Amanda Anisimova.

Five-time Grand Slam champion

Swiatek, not previously known for her prowess on grass, demolished former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-0 in just 71 minutes on Centre Court.

“Honestly, I never even dreamed that it’s going to be possible for me to play in the final,” said the 24-year-old eighth seed.

“So I’m just super-excited and proud of myself and, I don’t know, tennis keeps surprising me.

“I thought I had experienced everything on the court but I didn’t experience playing well on grass, so that’s the

first time. I’m super excited and just enjoying it.”

In baking conditions, Swiatek caught her Swiss opponent cold, racing into a 3-0 lead, and never relinquished her grip against her 35th-ranked opponent.

Bencic, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, at least got on the board in the first set, but in the second set the rampant Swiatek went up another gear and her opponent had no answers.

“Today was just a different level from Iga. She played amazing and I didn’t feel like she let me in the match for one second,” Bencic said.

“There’s nothing I really regret. In the end, she was just too good, and I was a step too short.”

Swiatek has largely gone under the radar at this year’s Wimbledon, dropping just one set while every seed above her has been eliminated.

Four of her five major wins have come on the clay of the French Open, with her previous best performance at Wimbledon a run to the quarter-finals in 2023.

She made her first grass-court final at Bad Homburg just two weeks ago and is now into her second final on the surface.

Swiatek has won all five of her Grand Slam finals, but standing in the way of a sixth major title is Anisimova in their first professional meeting. Anisimova ousts Sabalenka Anisimova, the American 13th

seed, shattered Sabalenka’s Wimbledon title bid with a tense 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

World number one Sabalenka had reached the previous three Grand Slam finals but came up short against Anisimova, who matched her blow for blow in a bruising encounter lasting just over two hour and a half hours.

“This doesn’t feel real right now, honestly,” said Anisimova. “Aryna is such a tough competitor and I was absolutely dying out there. I don’t know how I pulled it out.

“We’ve had so many tough battles and to come out on top and be in the final of Wimbledon is incredible.”

The 23-year-old, who now has an impressive 6-3 winning record against Sabalenka, won the first set but the Belarusian hit back to level. AFP

High-speed triathlon action in 5150 Bohol

ANTICIPATION surges as the 5150 Bohol triathlon blasts off tomorrow (Sunday, July 13), promising not just a grueling test of endurance and mental fortitude but also a high-octane race that rewards speed and strategy.

Staged over a world-class course, this year’s edition of the Olympic-distance race is shaping up to be one of the most exhilarating yet with the race not just a test of willpower but also a celebration of athletic potential.

“The bike course is designed to be fast yet enjoyable, featuring rolling terrain that allows for both speed and scenic appreciation,” said race director Julian Valencia. “The run course will also push the participants’ endurance and determination, creating a rewarding finish to an unforgettable racing experience.”

The event unfolds on the pristine shores and lush interiors of Panglao Island, covering a 1.5km open-water swim, a 40km bike leg, and a 10km run – offering a dynamic mix of speed, scenery and stamina. With its fast, flowing course, 5150 Bohol presents the perfect opportunity for athletes to chase new personal bests or sharpen their form ahead of longer races like the IRONMAN 70.3 LapuLapu in Cebu next month.

“We’ve worked tirelessly to ensure the event is both memorable and safe, with meticulous planning and attention to every detail,” added Valencia.

The bike leg kicks off at the Bellevue Resort on a narrow stretch before opening up to the island’s smooth, wide roads. The layout is tailor-made for speed – featuring a 2km lead-in to the Dauis-Panglao and Fonacier Circumferential intersection, then eastward to Tagbilaran for the first turnaround at KM 11. Riders then swing back west to St. Augustine Parish Church at KM 20 before a final turn at KM 29, setting them up for the run.

High Speed Hitters, Angels collide in PVL

WHAT began as a promising finale to the 13th Asian University Basketball Championship (AUBC) ended unexpectedly, with tensions briefly flaring between Mapua University—the 2018 AUBC champion—and Ningbo University from China, the 2019 titleholder. With just under six minutes remaining, the final game was suspended. While the disruption was regrettable, the grace and sportsmanship shown by Ningbo University in conceding the match allowed the tournament to conclude with dignity.

In lieu of spectacle, the championship title was awarded to Mapua

University, while Ningbo University received the runner-up trophy in a respectful, subdued ceremony held at the Manila Prince Hotel.

From adversity rose a renewed commitment to unity and understanding through sport.

Swift intervention from the Technological University of the PhilippinesManila security personnel, alongside the Basketball Association of the Philippines game officials and marshals, ensured the situation was brought under control within minutes.

The injured player from Ningbo University received prompt care from on-site medical staff, including TUP nurse Joana Veto, and was transferred to MADOCS Hospital, accompanied by delegates from both Ningbo U and the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP).

nament Committee composed of Soria, Cecille Sarmiento, Johny Tam, Romulo Raytos, Fernando Gayanilo, legal adviser Atty. Maria Luz Arzaga Mendoza, and members of the BAP National Referees Group.

FESSAP’s hosting of the AUBC was made possible by TUP president Engr. Reynaldo Ramos for graciously hosting the championship, and to his dedicated staff led by Athletic Director Allan Soria. Special recognition also goes to the AUBC Tour-

The championship was backed by Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), LT Group Inc., Philippine Airlines (PAL), BESTANK Manufacturing Corporation, ASICS Tiger apparel, KELME Sportswear, Healthy Options, Seascape Village, LIME Resort & Hotel, Burlington Socks, PADDOCK’s Casual Jeans, OMNI Electrical & Lighting, Megaworld Property, and HENN Athletic Club.

FESSAP president Edwin C. Fabro and BAP president Robert Milton Calo, who represented the CEO Abe

Lim of the Asian University Basketball Federation, extended their gratitude to all those who helped realize the 13th AUBC as a celebration of international friendship, especially among China, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The unwavering support of FESSAP’s Board and Patrons—including David Ong (PAL Director), Board Chairman Alvin Tai Lian, Vice Chairman Atty. Baldomero Estenzo, and Vice President Felix Tiukinhoy of Cebu—strengthened the foundation of this championship.

Special thanks also go to Businesswoman-Humanitarian Mary G. Ng, President of the Philippine InterSchool Sport Association and Head of Delegation to the 32nd World University Games, and her deputy Frank Lao, businessman-philanthropist, for their leadership and advocacy.

THE Premier Volleyball League On Tour continues to deliver edge-ofyour-seat action as it heads to Ilagan City for its fourth provincial leg, with a loaded Saturday double-header that promises both intensity and intrigue. Fresh from a commanding straightset victory over Farm Fresh, PLDT looks to extend its momentum – but it won’t come easy. The High Speed Hitters are set to face a Petro Gazz side teeming with experience and firepower, and more importantly, one that boasts an All-Filipino crown on its résumé.

It’s a clash between a surging contender and a proud champion – one of the many compelling subplots fueling the PVL’s unpredictable preseason showcase. With the tour already drawing big crowds in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Batangas City and Montalban, Rizal, the spotlight now shifts to The Capital Arena in Ilagan, hosting a PVL event of this magnitude for the very first time.

But before the highly anticipated PLDT-Petro Gazz showdown at 6:30 p.m., Choco Mucho and Farm Fresh face off at 4 p.m., both eager to get back on track after suffering setbacks in their previous outings.

The PVL On Tour has been nothing short of dramatic. In fact, nothing quite captures the unpredictable nature of the league than the thrilling five-setters staged last week in Montalban, where ZUS Coffee and Chery Tiggo barely scraped past Capital1 and Akari in gut-wrenching duels. This element of surprise, fueled by revamped rosters, high-impact rookies, and improved depth across the board, has kept fans on their toes. Perennial powerhouses are now being pushed to the brink, while rising squads – once seen as underdogs – are now redefining the league’s hierarchy.

No team exemplifies this earthshaking shift more than Nxled.

EDGARD HILARIO,

Jhanlo Sangiao wants to cap o birthday week with ONE victory

AFTER nearly two years away from competition, Jhanlo Mark Sangiao has one birthday wish – to finish his Mongolian opponent in devastating fashion at ONE Fight Night 33 on Saturday.

The Team Lakay phenom successfully passed his weigh-in and hydration tests Thursday evening, setting the stage for his highly anticipated return against Shinechagtga Zoltsetseg at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.

“It can be KO or submission,” Sangiao said when asked for his prediction after making weight.

The 23-year-old bantamweight is eager to get closer to the topfive rankings after suffering his first career loss to #4-ranked contender Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu.

“It is very important. I need to grab this opportunity for me to be back into the winner’s circle and into the [top-five] rankings,” Sangiao said.

Despite facing an opponent known for having tremendous knockout power, “The Machine” remains unfazed by the challenge ahead.

“Yes, he is an explosive striker, but I believe in my striking as well. There is no reason for me to feel threatened,” he said.

The emotions heading into his comeback match feel familiar to the young Filipino fighter.

“I remember my feeling during my debut fight, it’s the same feeling I have now. Excited, a bit anxious, mixed emotions,” Sangiao said.

Tropang 5G seek 3-peat, but Beermen want to crash party

ARARE grand slam awaits the TNT Tropang 5G should they win the crown in their PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven finals’ showdown with the San Miguel Beermen.

TNT has won the championships of the Governors’ Cup and the Commissioners’ Cup during the 49th season at the expense of the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Gin Kings.

For Tropang 5G coach Chot Reyes, battling the Beermen for a season sweep and a Grand Slam in the 49th season will be a different experience. Action on Sunday between the Tropang 5G and the Beermen is set at 7:30 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.

“The adversity that we went through is a

testament to the fighting spirit of the players.

Marami nang nangyari sa mga players, pero ayaw bumigay after winning two championships,” said Reyes, who took back the TNT head-coaching position starting in the Philippine Cup last year, with Jojo Lastimosa keeping his role as team manager.

Reyes was the former coach of the then Tropang Giga, a job he relinquished to focus on the Gilas Pilipinas head coaching job during the 2023 Fiba Basketball World Cup.

“And now, we’re here, we’ve given ourselves a chance. Ngayon, napakalakas ng kalaban namin. We just need to do what we’ve been doing the whole conference and keep on fighting,” said Reyes as he talked about TNT’s chances against the Beermen during a pre-finals’ conference on Friday at the Chardonnay Events Place in Pasig City.

Torcaso credits PFF’s support for Filipinas’ recent successes

FOLLOWING their impressive qualification in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 with a perfect record in Group G, Philippine Women’s National Football Team head coach

Mark Torcaso shared his insights on the team’s journey and their ambitious plans for continued development.

Torcaso expressed immense satisfaction with the team’s performance during the qualifiers.

“We set out a goal and a target to qualify, to win all the games, but it was very important for us not just to win the games, it was also important that we didn’t concede and we wanted to score as many goals as possible,” he stated. “We achieved that, and we not only achieved that by doing the targets we set, but we also played very well, particularly in the first two games.”

Looking ahead, the focus is firmly on the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in Australia. Torcaso outlined a strategic approach to the Filipinas’ preparations, emphasizing the coming ASEAN MSIG Serenity Cup in Vietnam and the SouthEast Asian Games in December as crucial opportunities.

“We will be bringing a lot of our good young players to the [ASEAN]

tournament,” he explained, acknowledging that some senior players might be unavailable due to the tournament falling outside a FIFA window. “This will be a chance for us to see some players that might not have played a lot in the last couple of camps, and some of our good young players will come.”

“The plan for the next six months is to make sure that some of those good young players are ready to play in a senior competition in the Asian Cup 2026 in Australia,” he affirmed, citing examples like Alex Pino, Bella Passion, and Chayse Ying who have already shown great potential.

Torcaso also touched upon the program’s continuity and its strong foundation. While acknowledging the departure of assistant coach Andrew Durante, he expressed confidence in the remaining staff and the team’s collective drive.

“Myself and all the other staff will be working towards getting us a successful result in the Asian Cup and preparing a good team over the next six to ten months,” he said.

the finals of the last two conferences.

“It’s nice to be back in the finals. It’s a different story. The other team is equally strong. TNT has won two different championships. But we’re here to redeem ourselves,” said Austria.

The San Miguel Corp. franchise has done it once and will be aiming to do it again – deny the MVP group a Grand Slam.

In 2011, TNT, then known as the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, had won the season’s first two conferences, but was stopped on their tracks by Petron in seven games in the Governors’ Cup.

The Beermen themselves have completed a Grand Slam in 1989 behind a powerhouse roster that included PBA greats Ramon Fernandez, Hector Calma, and Samboy Lim. And now, that rare feat is within reach by Reyes and the Tropang 5G.

Injuries, however, have hounded the Tropang 5G, with Roger Pogoy missing the TNT’s semifinals series vs Rain or Shine Tropang 5G made it to the finals last Sunday after beating Rain or Shine, 97-89, to finish the series at 4-2.

PFF president John Gutierrez during the Cambodia qualifiers were particularly appreciated.

“It was good to have President John with us in Cambodia. He had a couple of words to say to the girls, which was really good prior to the camp, some introduction messages, and then he congratulated the girls and everything at the end of the camp,” said Torcaso, highlighting the reassuring presence of the federation’s leadership.

Ultimately, the long-term vision remains clear: the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in Brazil.

The support from the PFF has been a significant factor in the team’s recent successes.

Torcaso noted the positive atmosphere in camp, stating, “The girls have come into camp refreshed, but they’ve also come into camp feeling really supported. We were able to obviously get our success from the support of everyone, and it’s been a really, really comfortable camp.”

The presence and encouragement of

Regarding Durante’s departure, Torcaso clarified, “The plan for Dura was to come in and help us get to the Asian Cup and he did that, and he’ll be sorely missed, but unfortunately, he couldn’t carry on after this camp.”

“That’s the ultimate goal,” coach Torcaso concluded. “These are the small steps and stages that we need to take to get to the World Cup, and this is one of the first and second steps getting to the Asian Cup. We want to make sure that we give every player the chance to also play.”

The Filipinas are set for a busy and crucial period of preparation as they build towards the Asian Cup, with a clear focus on developing talent and achieving further success on the international stage. Their next tournament – the Serenity Cup – is scheduled from August 6 to 19 at the Viet Tri Stadium and Lach Tray Stadium.

Bisera romps in JPGT debut; Miñoza ends drought at South Pacific

DAVAO City—Local standout Adrian Bisera and Bukidnon’s Crista Miñoza made their mark in the ICTSI Junior PGT Series in style, clinching breakthrough wins with contrasting performances in the premier 1518 age group division of the JPGT South Pacific Championship here Friday.

Carrying commanding leads into the final round of the 54-hole tournament at the South Pacific Golf and Residential Estates course, Bisera and Miñoza –both steeped in golf heritage with relatives who are champions in their own right – delivered clutch performances under hot but calm conditions to clinch their first wins in the series. Making his Junior PGT debut this season, Bisera displayed remarkable composure and resilience over the final two rounds to clinch the victory in the third leg of the Mindanao series organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. Five shots clear of Armand Copok after 36 holes, the Davaoeño pulled away with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 and never looked back, closing out with a 72 marred by a last-hole double-bogey for an even 216 total.

He capped off his impressive debut with an 11-stroke victory over fellow Davao bet AJ Wacay, who limped home with a 77 for a 227. Despite holding a commanding lead going into the final hole, Bisera admitted to feeling the pressure.

“I double-bogeyed the last hole because I got nervous – there were so many people watching,” he said with a sheepish grin. “But I’m still really happy with the win. I just felt I had to deliver.”

To manage the nerves, the 17-year-old, who regularly trains on the course, said he kept things light.

“I just tried to stay relaxed, chatted with my flightmates, and had a few laughs to ease the tension,” said Bisera. Copok, chasing his maiden win after near misses at Del Monte (third) and Pueblo de Oro (second), slipped to third after stumbling with a four-bogey slide in the first 10 holes. He wound up with a 79 for a 228 aggregate.

It was a highly promising start for Bisera, who now eyes a spot in the ICTSI North vs South Elite Junior Finals. To qualify, however, he must see action in next week’s Apo leg of the Mindanao swing and participate in at least one of the final two Visayas legs of the series.

rediscovered his shooting touch while Vince Magbuhos went perfect from the 3-point zone as the Huskers tallied their fifth straight win and climbed to 15-3 in the roundrobin elimination phase of the 30team tournament. The Huskers pace the South Division, which they topped last year, and trail North Division leaders and sure playoff qualifiers Nueva Ecija (18-0), Abra (17-1) and San Juan (16-1). The Pasay Voyagers, powered by acquisition Christian Fajarito, led throughout in an 81-64 demolition of Imus Braderhood in the nightcap. The 6-foot-6 Fajarito, a former Letran star who played for Binan Tatak Gel, tallied 27 points, laced by four triples, and 5 rebounds to lift Pasay to 12-8.

Muntinlupa absorbed its sixth straight loss and tumbled to 10-8. The Gensan Warriors pounded the Paranaque Patriots without letup and won, 106-59, in the opener.

Smarting from their 82-86 defeat to the Quezon Huskers on July 1, the Warriors led as far as 104-53 and improved to 12-7.

Kyle Tolentino delivered the most for GenSan with 29 points, aided by five triples, 10 rebounds and 4 steals to earn best player honors over Joel Lee Yu with 14 points, 8 assists and 2 rebounds.

Other Warriors who struck hard were Von Tambeling with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; Nico Elorde with 11 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds; Felix Apreku with 5 points plus 21 rebounds, and Marwin Dionisio with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Influencers told to stop promoting online gambling

THE Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) ordered content creators and influence to stop promoting illegal online gambling, warning of legal action starting next week.

Artist Raul Roco Jr., son of the late senator Raul Roco, presents his art works to the visitors during the opening of 8th Ortigas Art Festival in GH Mall, Greenhills, San Juan on July 10, 2025. The exhibit, with the theme ‘Art for All: A Celebration of Borderless Artistic’, features the works of different artists from Pasig City, San Juan, Mindoro and Angono, Rizal. The exhibit will run from July 10 to 24, 2025. Joseph Muego AGRICULTURE DRONE. To intensify the promotion of the

CICC deputy executive director

Renato Paraiso announced in a news briefing that the agency would send demand letters to influencers next week. Failure to comply will result in charges being filed the following week, he said.

Paraiso noted the risks of unregulated online gambling. “One of the dangers of illegal online gambling is we cannot regulate if they are manipulating the results. They can cheat there,” he said.

The CICC’s warning follows a move by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), which ordered its licensed online gambling platforms to remove all billboard advertisements for their games.

PAGCOR, in a memorandum issued on July 7, directed all licensees, suppliers, gaming venue operators and system administrators to dismantle all billboard and other out-of-home advertisements related to gambling activities nationwide by August 15, 2025.

To ensure compliance, licensees should submit an inventory of all billboard and wallscape advertisements by July 16, 2025.

The inventory should include details such as size, location, material type, rental expiry and corresponding Advertising Standards Council (ASC) number.

The directive also applies to advertisements displayed on vehicles, including trains, buses, jeepneys and taxis.

Thunder Consortium set to bag CBK deal next week

The Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) is set to issue the notice of award next week for the CalirayaBotocan-Kalayaan (CBK) Hydroelectric Power Plants (HEPPs) to the Thunder Consortium, a group comprising Aboitiz Renewables Inc., Sumitomo Corp. and Electric Power Development Co.

PSALM identified the Thunder Consortium as the highest-ranking bidder after it offered P36.266 billion for the 796.64-megawatt CBK hydro facility.

“We expect to issue [the] NOA next week,” PSALM president Dennis de la Serna said when asked for an update.

The Department of Energy (DOE)

said the sale of CBK would alleviate financial burdens on Filipino taxpayers, strengthen the power sector and support the country’s clean energy transition.

“It will bring immediate relief in our debts so that means the burden of that in our electricity bills may be eased,” DOE Undersecretary Sharon Marasigan said,

referring to the universal charge portion of power bills.

The DOE said that beyond providing immediate debt relief to PSALM, the proceeds from the sale would ensure the facility receives the necessary investment and expertise for long-term reliable operations.

The CBK complex is crucial during peak demand periods and emergency situations, supplying a significant portion of the electricity consumed in Metro Manila, the country’s largest and most energy-intensive consumption center.

The privatization of the CBK HEPP, as envisioned under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA), aims to place the asset under private ownership to optimize its performance through technical and financial expertise.

(Meralco) announced an increase of P0.4883 per kilowatt-hour for July 2025, bringing the overall rate for a typical household to P12.6435 per kilowatt-hour on higher fuel prices and a weaker peso.

This followed two consecutive months of electricity rate reductions totaling P0.8575 per kWh, Meralco said in a statement Friday.

Residential customers using 200 kWh will see their total electricity bill increase by around P98.

The Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) on Friday expressed grave concern over the United States’ imposition of additional punitive tariffs on Philippine exports.

“Such unilateral measures violate fundamental WTO principles of non-discrimination and fair trade,” FFCCCII president Victor Lim said in a statement.

He said the US measures threatened to disrupt carefully developed supply chains, harm businesses and consumers in both nations, undermine the rules-based global trading system and set dangerous precedents for economic fragmentation.

Charges from Meralco’s power supply agreements (PSA) and independent power producers (IPPs) increased by P0.4476 and P0.4992 per kilowatt-hour, respectively amid higher fuel prices and a weaker peso against the US dollar. The peso closed at 56.47 against the US dollar Friday. Global fuel prices rose in June in reaction to the Israel-Iran conflict. The impact of higher fuel costs was intensified by the peso’s depreciation to its weakest level since March 2025,

The FFCCCII said it supported government efforts to use diplomacy to negotiate fairness and protect Philippine national interests and the economy.

“We urgently call for strict enforcement of anti-dumping regulations against a flood of unfairly priced imports; comprehensive measures to combat smuggling; and support mechanisms for affected agricultural and manufacturing sectors,” it said.

“Our domestic industries require and deserve a level playing field in global markets. Protect our workers and farmers,” Lim said.

PH lifts ban on Japan’s poultry exports

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said Friday it lifted the temporary ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds and their by-products from Japan, following confirmation that the country is now free from highly pathogenic avian influenza.

The import ban, originally imposed by the DA in November 2024, also covered poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen. It was enacted as a precautionary measure to safeguard the local poultry industry—a critical pillar of the food security program vision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and a major source of jobs and investment, the DA said.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., in Memorandum Order No. 36, cited a report submitted by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), which confirmed that all previously reported HPAI cases had been resolved as of June 13, with no new outbreaks since.

The DA chief said that in accordance with WOAH guidelines and our own risk assessment, “we have determined that Japan is bird flu free the likelihood of bird flu contamination from imports originating in Japan is negligible.”

DoubleDragon completes Cebu warehouse project

DOUBLEDRAGON Corp. said Friday it completed a fivehectare industrial warehouse complex under CentralHub in Cebu, which will further boost its recurring income.

This brings the company’s total leasing portfolio to 1.5 million square meters of gross floor area (GFA), DoubleDragon said in a disclosure to the stock exchange.

The Cebu facility, which is fully preleased, is part of CentralHub, a joint venture between DoubleDragon and fast-food giant Jollibee Foods Corp.

It supports DoubleDragon’s plan to build a P24.8 billion warehouse leasing portfolio and list CentralHub as the first industrial Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) in the Philippines.

“This new CentralHub warehouse com-

plex in Cebu further solidifies the recurring revenue backbone of DoubleDragon,” the company said. “We are actively building out CentralHub’s industrial warehouse portfolio.”

Aside from Cebu, CentralHub assets are in Capiz, Tarlac, Pasig and Laguna, while ongoing developments are located in Iloilo, Davao.

DoubleDragon’s portfolio includes community malls, office buildings, hotels and warehouse facilities across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

EDC unit expands Palinpinon geothermal plant

GREEN Core Geothermal Inc. proposed to increase the capacity of the Palinpinon 1 geothermal power plant in Valencia, Negros Oriental to 126 megawatts from 112.5 MW. GCGI, a unit of Energy Development Corp., the geothermal arm of Lopez-led First Gen Corp., operates the Palinpinon geothermal power plants.

Documents submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources showed that Green Core aimed to invest P3 billion for the 13.5-MW capacity increase of the project, with commercial operations eyed in the third quarter of 2028.

The expansion will also require a new environment compliance certificate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

GCGI intends to upgrade its turbine system by replacing the existing three 37.5-MW turbine generators with three more efficient 42 MW units, increasing the total capacity of the Palinpinon 1 geothermal plant.

The company said it is conducting the upgrade because two of the turbine rotors are approaching end of their asset life within two to three years.

The company, however, assured that the enhancement would not require additional land, alterations in process technology or increased steam usage.

It said there would also be no increase in emissions or condensate generator, as the enhanced efficiency of the new turbines compensates for the capacity increase.

GCGI said the project would contribute additional baseload capacity and provide dependable and reasonably priced power supply in the Visayas.

assets footprint strategically located in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao is expected to fully mature by 2025.

The company also holds hotels assets overseas through its subsidiary Hotel101 Global.

DoubleDragon’s position was strengthened by the recent U.S. NASDAQ listing of its subsidiary, Hotel101 Global, the first Filipinoowned company to be listed and traded on the NASDAQ.

The brand is targeting 1 million rooms across 100 countries, with its first overseas project underway in Madrid, Spain.

The company last year reported plans to list its CentralHub unit this year, making it the first industrial REIT in the local bourse.

LOCAL shares ended marginally lower Friday in lackluster trading as investors remained cautious amid market uncertainties.

“The local market moved sideways, closing in negative territory again as global trade headwinds continued to weigh on sentiment,” said Japhet Tantiango, research head at Philstocks Financial Inc.

Tantiango said “investors continued to deal with the U.S.’ 20 percent tariff rate on Philippine exports, effective August 1.”

DA plans $250-m aquaculture project with ADB

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to launch a $250 million aquaculture infrastructure project, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The initiative aims to bolster the country’s fish supply and lessen its reliance on imports, particularly for bangus (milkfish) fry.

Agriculture assistant secretary Arnel de Mesa stated the project is part of the department’s larger effort to revitalize the aquaculture sector, given the stagnant output from traditional capture fisheries.

“Our growth in fisheries is now coming from aquaculture — shrimp, tilapia, bangus — because our captured fisheries are hardly moving. That’s the dilemma of the sector,” de Mesa explained during a weekly DA briefing.

He acknowledged the importance of government interventions, like closed fishing seasons that allow natural fish stocks to regenerate. However, he emphasized that long-term solutions depend on strengthening aquaculture.

“One of our priorities is to build up aquaculture infrastructure, especially hatcheries, to reduce our dependence on imported bangus fry,” he said.

ECOPARK ANNIVERSARY.

The La Mesa Ecopark in Quezon City marks a significant milestone, celebrating its first anniversary under the stewardship of Manila Water Company’s social development arm, Manila Water Foundation (MWF). The event featured a presentation of La Mesa Ecopark’s accomplishments over the past year, followed by the ribbon-cutting of two new attractions: a butterfly garden and a pickleball court.

The DA has already backed hatchery development in key regions, such as Northern Luzon, through the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP), which has recently shown strong production.

De Mesa noted the new ADB-supported project seeks to expand these successes nationwide.

The $250 million funding will cover the planning, design, and construction of various aquaculture support facilities, including hatcheries, nurseries, and ponds.

“We’re currently onboarding consultants for the study. We expect implementation to begin by the second quarter of next year,” de Mesa said.

The DA is also focusing on seaweed farming and other aquaculture ventures, with the goal of increasing productivity and income for coastal communities.

THE Department of Agriculture (DA), in partnership with the Sorosoro Ibaba Development Cooperative (SIDC), rolled out the “Benteng Bigas, Meron Na!” initiative across 15 newly-opened KADIWA ng Pangulo outlets in Batangas province on Thursday.

“This is about ensuring food security and empowering local farmers. With the support of SIDC, we are

to develop Aurora marine resources

THE Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region III have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop marine resources in Casiguran, Aurora.

Signed Friday, the MOU outlines initiatives including the establishment of salt-making and seaweed production facilities, the potential development of a legislated marine hatchery, and the rollout of a vessel monitoring system to strengthen maritime sustainability in the Philippine Rise and Philippine Sea.

“Today we formally welcome BFAR as our partner for development. These initiatives aim to empower our local communities and transform Casiguran into a hub for marine-based investments, towards our direction to become the Fishing Capital of the Pacific,” APECO president Gil Taway said. Under the agreement, a one-hectare inland salt pro-

duction facility will be developed using advanced technologies within APECO’s Parcel 2 in Barangay Cozo.

The P10 million facility will produce high-quality artisanal salt for local consumption and export, generating employment for at least 30 residents.

The partnership will also facilitate commercial-scale seaweed farming in Barangays Diniog, Dalugan and Cozo, covering up to one hectare in each barangay.

In support of regional aquaculture, APECO and BFAR plan to build a one-hectare inland fish hatchery within the ecozone. The proposed facility, estimated to cost between P40 million and P50 million, will raise fingerlings for distribution to fish farms beyond Casiguran.

The MOU establishes a joint effort to implement a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) covering the Eastern Seaboard and Philippine Rise. The system will enhance maritime surveillance and lay the groundwork for future port infrastructure. Othel V. Campos

moving closer to our goal of bringing safe, sufficient, and affordable food to every Filipino table,” said DA assistant secretary for agribusiness, marketing and consumer affairs Bebang Guevarra, who also heads the KADIWA program.

The Batangas outlet forms part of the national scale-up strategy to reach around 15 million households, or about 60 million Filipinos, by the end of 2026.

The 15 newly operational KADIWA sa SIDC outlets are located in key areas across Batangas, including SIDC’s main office in Sorosoro

Ibaba as well as various barangays in Batangas City, Lipa City, San Pascual and Bauan. While open to all, the outlets will prioritize beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), senior citizens, solo parents and persons with disabilities for access to the P20-per-kilogram rice. The outlets also offer other essential goods such as vegetables, poultry, meat, eggs and other basic food items, sourced directly from local farmers and producers to keep prices low and eliminate middlemen.

PH, Spain explore deeper maritime cooperation, eye technology transfers

THE Philippines and the autonomous region of Galicia in Spain are exploring deeper maritime cooperation following a successful trade mission facilitated by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through its Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in Madrid in May 2025.

“Galicia’s advanced naval sector stands to benefit from the Philippines’ ambition to become a global maritime hub,” Antonio said, noting the Philippines’ position among the world’s top five shipbuilding nations,” said PTIC-Madrid commercial counsellor Althea Karen Antonio

She said the mission is expected to create a strong ground for joint ventures, technology transfer, and market expansion.

Galicia, one of Spain’s fastest-growing regions, is globally recognized for its shipbuilding sector, with demand rising for fishing vessels, offshore platforms, ocean liners, and maritime innovation tied to renewable energy.

The mission provided a venue for a strategic partnership with the Philippines, which is currently pursuing maritime modernization through legislative reforms such as the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) Development Bill.

Antonio underscored that full foreign ownership is allowed in shipbuilding ventures in the Philippines, signaling a clear opportunity for Galician shipbuilders and marine equipment manufacturers to establish a footprint in Southeast Asia.

Apart from maritime opportunities, the PTIC highlighted other potential growth areas between Galicia and the Philippines, including fashion and textile, automotive, and food and beverage.

Galicia is home to global fashion names such as INDITEX and Bimba y Lola, with its textile industry contributing 14 percent to the region’s GDP.

Antonio said the Philippine market, with its expanding middle class and projected $5.1 billion in apparel and footwear spending, is ripe for Spanish brands looking to expand through partnerships, franchising, or e-commerce, particularly with the easing of retail restrictions under the Retail Trade Liberalization Act.

Infrastructure is another promising area for engagement, with Antonio confirming that many Philippine projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework are open to foreign participation.

BIR welcomes criminal charges vs. 2 firms using ghost receipts

THE Bureau of Internal Revenue

(BIR) on Friday welcomed the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) filing of 18 criminal charges before the Court of Tax Appeals against two businesses and their corporate officers for alleged involvement in fraudulent transactions using “ghost receipts.”

The BIR stated that on April 10, 2025, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla filed charges against E.D. Buenviaje Builders Inc. and Synergy Sales International Corp. (SSIC), along with their responsible officers.

The charges allege multiple violations of Sections 254 (Attempt to Evade or Defeat Tax) and 255 (Failure to Supply Correct and Accurate Information) of the National Internal

Revenue Code (NIRC) of 1997, as amended.

The charges stemmed from complaints filed by the BIR on Nov. 22, 2023, following an investigation that uncovered the companies’ use of fraudulent receipts issued by “ghost corporations”:

Buildforce Trading Inc. and Decarich Supertrade Inc. reportedly had no legitimate business operations and were set up solely to issue fake receipts in exchange for a fee.

E.D. Buenviaje and SSIC allegedly used the bogus receipts to substantiate fictitious purchases, claim illegal input VAT credits and declare overstated expenses, thereby reducing their tax liabilities, the BIR said.

CLI chief operating officer Jose Franco Soberano said in an interview following the company’s annual stockholders meeting the first phase of The Wave would offer 700 units with prices ranging from

P250,000 to P300,000 per square meter.

Soberano said the project could generate up to P12 billion in sales.

Wave Towers will offer a mix of units, with 60-percent studios and

NexGen Energy plans to join fifth round of Green Energy Auction

NEXGEN Energy Corp. announced plans to join the fifth round of Green Energy Auction where 3,300 megawatts of offshore wind capacity targeted between 2028 and 2030 will be offered for private sector development.

“We have registered to be a qualified bidder under the government’s Green Energy Auction Program [GEAP 4]. For the Real offshore wind project, we have already erected our met mast in the area and is presently logging wind data, we expect to join the GEAP 5 round,” NexGen president Eric Roxas said in a speech during the annual stockholders meeting.

Met masts are essential for confirming the wind resource

potential for its project.

The Real offshore wind project in Quezon province has a capacity of 2,000 megawatts.

“For our Pandan onshore wind project, we are determining the location to install the met mast and should be installed within the next few months. The other projects have ongoing pre-feasibility studies, identification of met-mast locations and community engagements,” Roxas said.

The 200-MW Pandan wind project is also located in Quezon province.

NexGen said it sharpened its focus on long-term growth, with 14 renewable projects in its development pipeline, 2 solar projects, 7 offshore wind, and 5 onshore wind sites, all with awarded service contracts.

40-percent one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

Studio units range from 25 to 30 square meters and are designed with Japanese-inspired space-saving features.

The development also includes a Japanese garden and traditional Japanese finishes in the common areas. All aspects of the design were closely coordinated with NTT-UD, reflecting their emphasis on quality and precision.

“It’s our premium offering here,” a CLI executive said. “For Cebu, the P250,000 to P300,000 per square meter range is already considered pre-

mium, although not luxury.”

A project showroom is set to open next week to showcase unit layouts and interior finishes.

CLI in 2024 formed a 60:40 joint venture partnership with NTT-UD, global real estate firm based in Japan and a subsidiary of the country’s leading telecom provider NTT.

CLI expanded its board to 11 members from five and appointed former Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. president and chief executive Eugene Acevedo and outgoing University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) president Dr. Winston Padojinog as independent directors.

AI-generated media drives real-world fraud, identity theft

HONG KONG SAR

—Trend Micro Incorporated, a global cybersecurity leader, recently released a new report exposing the scale and maturity of deepfakeenabled cybercrime.

As generative AI tools become more powerful, affordable, and accessible, cybercriminals are rapidly adopting them to support attacks, ranging from business fraud to extortion and identity theft.

To read the full report , Deepfake it ‘til You Make It: A Comprehensive View of the New AI Criminal Toolset, please visit : https://www.trendmicro.com/ vinfo/hk/security/news/cybercrime-anddigital-threats/deepfake-it-til-you-makeit-a-comprehensive-view-of-the-new-aicriminal-toolset The report shows how deepfakes have moved beyond hype into real-world exploitation, undermining digital trust, exposing companies to new risks, and accelerating the business models of cybercriminals.

Tony Lee, Head of Consulting, Hong Kong & Macau, at Trend: “AI-generated media is not just a future risk, it’s a real business threat. We’re seeing executives impersonated, hiring processes compromised, and financial safeguards bypassed with alarming ease. This research is a wake up call—if businesses are not proactively preparing for the deepfake era, they’re already behind. In a world where seeing is no longer believing, digital trust must be rebuilt from the ground up.” The research found that threat actors no longer need underground expertise to launch convincing attacks. Instead, they are using off-the-shelf video, audio, and image generation platforms, many of which are marketed to content creators, to generate realistic deepfakes that deceive both individuals and organizations.

This illustration photo in Los Angeles shows a YouTube account posting AI-generated deepfake audios of Pope Leo XIV in front of a TV screen. AI-generated videos and audios of Pope Leo XIV are populating rapidly online, racking up views as platforms struggle to police them. An AFP investigation identified dozens of YouTube and TikTok pages that have been churning out AI-generated messages delivered in the pope’s voice or otherwise attributed to him since he took charge of the Catholic Church last month. Sophos Managed Risk capabilities expanded

SOPHOS, a global leader of innovative security solutions for defeating cyberattacks, announced the expansion of its Sophos Managed Risk capabilities with the introduction of Internal Attack Surface Management (IASM) with technology powered by Tenable.

Many organizations face critical blind spots in their cyber defenses. In fact, the Sophos State of Ransomware 2025 report found 40% of organizations impacted by ransomware in the last year reported falling victim due to an exposure they were unaware of. Sophos Managed Risk, now with both internal and external attack surface management, addresses this challenge, providing comprehensive visibility into internal and external weaknesses that could be exploited by threat actors.

AS major productivity solution providers continue to adjust their plan offerings, many organizations are grappling with sudden shrinking plan options, rising costs, and the phase-out of long-standing services. With Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 reaching end-of-support in October 2025, IT teams must consider more than just a routine upgrade. This is a strategic crossroads, a decision that impacts how businesses manage communication, compliance, and data sovereignty, with significant implications for cost and control.

Continuing on unsupported Exchange versions would expose businesses to serious risks: the loss of security updates, vendor support, and compatibility with other Microsoft applications. Therefore, this shift marks more than just the end of a product lifecycle; it forces IT teams to make an urgent, strategic decision: migrate to cloud-based services like Exchange Online or Microsoft 365, or stay on-prem with the upcoming Exchange Server Subscription Edition (Microsoft, 2024). Time is running out to evaluate the next move before the sunset. With mounting pressure to act, IT teams are left with a narrow window to weigh their options. The new Exchange subscription model introduces added complexity, requiring Software Assurance on top of

Financial services firms are seeing a surge in deepfake attempts to bypass KYC (Know Your Customer) checks, enabling anonymous money laundering through falsified credentials.

These tools are inexpensive, easy to use, and increasingly capable of bypassing identity verification systems and security controls. The report outlines a growing cybercriminal ecosystem where these platforms are used to execute convincing scams, including: CEO fraud has become increasingly harder to detect as attackers use deepfake audio or video to impersonate senior leaders in real-time meetings. Recruitment processes are being compromised by fake candidates who use AI to pass interviews and gain unauthorized access to internal systems.

Similarly, cloud adoption offers agility and scalability, but organizations are increasingly weighing the trade-offs in compliance, cost control, and vendor

onboarding procedures to plug-andplay face-swapping tools, the barrier to entry is now minimal. As deepfakeenabled scams grow in frequency and complexity, businesses are urged to take proactive steps to minimize their risk exposure and protect their people and processes. This includes educating staff on social engineering risks, reviewing authentication workflows, and exploring detection solutions for synthetic media.

dependency. SaaS expenditures have grown 27% in two years, averaging $7,900 per user annually. For heavily regulated sectors or cost-conscious public institutions, this trend raises sustainability concerns (Invesp, 2025).

In this landscape, finding a stable on-premise solution that guarantees robust security, privacy and price reliability becomes all the more crucial.

Hosting email on-premises allows organizations to retain full ownership over their infrastructure and data, reducing reliance on external vendors and ensuring compliance with local or sector-specific standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, or ISO 27001. This can be particularly beneficial for teams in education, government, legal, or healthcare environments, where trust and traceability matter.

On-premises solutions can also offer key advantages in data governance. With everything hosted within the organization’s own network, from mail services and user permissions to backup and access logs, administrators maintain full visibility into how data is handled and by whom.

This level of control is increasingly critical in an era where organizations face tightening compliance regulations and heightened data privacy expectations. Some modern solutions now integrate email, storage, security, and auditing into a single appliance, enabling IT teams to simplify administration while strengthening governance and oversight.

“With Sophos Managed Risk, organizations gain an attacker’s-eye view to identify and prioritize remediation of risks before adversaries can exploit them. The solution offers a unified view of both internal and external exposures, prioritized by risk and paired with clear remediation guidance,” said Rob Harrison, Senior Vice President, Product Management at Sophos. “This enables organizations to focus their efforts where it matters most, on the most critical vulnerabilities, resolving them rapidly.”

The latest release of Sophos Managed Risk introduces unauthenticated internal scanning, which assesses a system from the perspective of an external attacker without user credentials or privileged access. This enables organizations to identify and mitigate high-risk vulnerabilities, such as open ports, exposed services and misconfigurations that are accessible and potentially exploitable by attackers.

Features of IASM for Sophos Managed Risk include:

• Comprehensive vulnerability management: Regular automated scanning to identify weaknesses affecting assets within the network.

• AI-powered prioritization: Intelligently determines which vulnerabilities pose the highest risk and need immediate attention, guiding organizations to prioritize their patching and remediation efforts.

• Industry-leading technology: Sophos leverages Tenable Nessus scanners to detect vulnerabilities inside the network and determine their severity.

• The Sophos advantage: Unlike vendors that separate External Attack Surface Management (EASM) and IASM into distinct products, Sophos provides an integrated managed service powered by leading Tenable technology and backed by one of the world’s leading MDR services. The new IASM capabilities are accessible through Sophos Managed Risk, an extended service with Sophos MDR. The Sophos Managed Risk team is Tenable-certified and works closely with Sophos MDR to share essential information about zero-days, known vulnerabilities and exposure risks to assess and investigate possibly exploited environments.

GGary V, RJ dela Fuente find hope in stripped-down retelling of ‘Blessings’

Valenciano was driving when the song hit him. He had to pull over.

“If I were to revive a song, this must be it,” he said, referring to “Blessings,” the inspirational ballad originally recorded by Laura Story. The lyrics hit him hard. They felt right for the time we’re living in.

“With everything that’s happening now, people need inspiration. People need God. We need our faith,” Gary V told Manila Standard Entertainment “Whenever we get the chance to say this to others, it’s a privilege. It’s an honor.”

RJ dela Fuente felt the same way. In a separate conversation, he said the song spoke to him on a personal level. “There are times we really can’t explain

what’s happening. There’s chaos, problems, and trials. But in the middle of all of that, God is always there with us.”

Together, Gary and RJ have released a new music video for “Blessings.” It is simple, quiet, and powerful. No heavy effects or distractions. Just light, shadows, and a message that slowly builds. The more stripped down it gets, the more it connects.

The video, directed by Jason Maximo, begins in darkness. Light slowly rises. RJ appears first in cool, muted tones. Gary V follows in warmer, golden hues. Two different energies, but both grounded in faith. By the end, the screen is flooded with white. Not

THERE’S something about Si Sol at si Luna that just hits home for young viewers. The latest episode, “Meet the Family,” ended on a hopeful note after nearly breaking hearts—Sol (Zaijian Jaranilla) finally showed up just as Luna (Jane Oineza) waited in the final scene. It was a slow burn of an episode, filled with doubts, what-ifs, and emotional detours.

For Gen Z fans, this isn’t just another online series. It feels personal. Here’s why they keep coming back every week:

1. The characters feel real.

Sol messes up. He lets people down. He makes decisions that don’t always make sense. But he owns up to them. Luna, too, struggles with vulnerability and trust. These characters aren’t polished—they’re flawed, and that makes them relatable.

2. Grief is portrayed honestly.

Luna’s loss doesn’t sit quietly in the background. It spills over into her daily life, showing up when she least expects it. There are no big, dramatic breakdowns—just the slow, painful effort of trying to live again. That kind of portrayal resonates with viewers who’ve been there themselves.

3. It’s a love story, but not the fairy tale kind. There’s an age gap. There’s baggage. There are doubts. Si Sol at si Luna doesn’t rush to romantic highs. It builds slowly, with awkward pauses and hard conversations—just like real relationships.

4. It gets Gen Z. The show captures quiet anxieties, emotional fatigue, and the pressure to “be okay.” It mirrors what young people are going through: the desire to connect, the fear of being hurt again, and the hope that someone will just understand.

5. It’s not just for Gen Z.

Though young fans are at the heart of its viewership, Si Sol at si Luna reaches older audiences too. Puregold’s Ivy HayaganPiedad says the show’s themes cut across age groups. Whether you’re dealing with your first heartbreak or healing from a love long gone, there’s something here for you. Next up in Episode 7, “The Interview,” Sol and Luna are finally spending more time together— this time, for Sol’s film project. But is something more starting to grow between them?

just brightness, the director says, but the presence of Jesus.

Everything in the production points back to the message of the song. Even the set and wardrobe are

kept minimal. “A play of lights, a plain set, simple attire. It all kept the message crystal clear,” Gary V said. RJ added, “The lyrics are so powerful, we didn’t want the visuals to distract from that.” For him, this project is more than a cover. It is a full-circle moment. “I get to do it with Tito Gary, who has been an inspiration to me since I was younger.”

Both artists are also part of the latest run of Joseph the Dreamer, a theater production that echoes the same themes. Joseph’s journey in the musical is about betrayal, waiting, and finally, redemption. It is a reminder that not all blessings arrive in obvious ways.

“Joseph’s story didn’t look like a blessing at first,” Gary said. “But that’s how many of God’s blessings arrive. They come during the hardest seasons of life. Only later do we understand what they were for.”

IF YOU needed a sign to stock up on hopia, this is it.

Eng Bee Tin is taking its National Hopia Day celebration to a whole new level this July. And by “new level,” we mean nationwide.

The 113-year-old brand that turned mung bean pastries into a cultural staple is celebrating its 2nd National Hopia

Every hopia tells a story

Day with discounts, pop-ups, and even a hopia campaign inspired by Manila’s most colorful mayor. For the first time, National Hopia Day will be felt across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It’s not just a Manila thing anymore. Hopia love is now officially a nationwide event.

Every Monday this month (July 14, 21, and 28) hopia fans can enjoy a 10 percent discount on select favorites. But if you want to go big, block off July 18 to 20. Eng Bee Tin branches across the country will be offering a 20 percent discount on participating items. Yes, it’s real. No, you don’t need a voucher. Just bring your appetite.

The celebration doesn’t stop at discounts. Eng Bee Tin is staging pop-up events at Robinsons Galleria Cebu from July 16 to 20 and Gaisano Mall Davao from July 23 to 27. Expect freebies, flavors, and possibly a few purple pandas.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. One of the main highlights this year is the launch of Hopia Etneb—a P20 hopia deal that nods to the brand’s Manila roots. The idea came from former (and now current) Mayor Isko Moreno, who suggested the campaign to Eng Bee Tin COO Gerik Chua years ago. The goal? Make hopia more accessible, especially in a time when inflation makes even comfort food feel like a splurge.

“This isn’t just about hopia,” said Gerik. “It’s about honoring our roots, celebrating our community, and recognizing how food brings us together.”

What’s a celebration without some fun? The Hopia Hakot Challenge returns this year, giving fans the chance to scoop up P15,000 worth of Eng Bee Tin goodies in one thrilling grab. New and limited-edition hopia flavors are also in the mix, with Filipino twists that push tradition in the tastiest

way possible.

“National Hopia Day is our thank you to the Filipino people,” said operations executive Gerald Chua. “They’re more than customers. They’re family.”

“Every hopia tells a story,” added finance manager Roche Chua. “This month, we’re celebrating all of them.”

From nostalgic bites in Binondo to bold flavors in Davao, National Hopia Day 2025 is shaping up to be the country’s sweetest celebration of heritage, unity, and bean-filled goodness.

Follow Eng Bee Tin on social media for the latest updates. Then go out and grab a hopia, or ten. This only happens once a year.

Bringing balance and function to the modern Filipino

TOSHIBA Lifestyle Philippines is bringing a fresh approach to home living with the launch of its new Japandi Suite, a collection of appliances that balance design and function.

The suite was unveiled alongside the Nature Pure Series during a public lifestyle showcase at Robinsons Magnolia on June 30.

Marketed under the “Harmony in Details” campaign, the Japandi Suite reflects a blend of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian practicality—a design fusion known as Japandi.

daily routines easier while maintaining high standards in design, reliability, and sustainability.

Also featured in the exhibit is a 711-liter side-by-side and multi-door refrigerator in a muted Morandi Grey finish. With built-in air purification technology, it’s designed to reduce bacteria, manage odors, and help extend the freshness of stored food.

Alejandro said the company is responding to a shift in how people view home life.

“People are paying more attention to how their space feels, not just how it functions. That’s what we’re bringing to the table—solutions that are both smart and beautiful.”

The product line includes two refrigerator models, a microwave oven, a rice cooker, a washing machine, and a water dispenser, all designed with clean lines, intuitive features, and understated elegance.

“These are appliances you want to use every day—and you want them in your home, not just because they work, but because they look and feel like they belong,” said Anna Marie Alejandro, general manager of Toshiba Lifestyle Philippines.

Alejandro said the suite was developed with the “pragmatic premium” market in mind—Filipino consumers who value refined yet practical solutions for their homes.

“This is about choosing quality and purpose over excess. It’s not about showing off. It’s about creating calm, intentional spaces,” she said during the launch.

Toshiba’s long-standing tradition of craftsmanship, now spanning more than 150 years, remains at the heart of its innovation. The company said it continues to develop appliances that make

Toshiba’s showcase encourages guests to explore not only the appliances themselves but also the lifestyle they support: one that values clarity, calm, and meaningful design.

“We design with purpose,” Alejandro said. “And that means delivering appliances that do more than work— they bring a sense of harmony to the home.”

Toshiba also unveiled its Japandi Series alongside the introduction of its newest Takumi Masters during the Toshiba Dealer Convention Gala. Continuing its pursuit of perfection and excellence, the brand launched a new line of artisanal home solutions while honoring four individuals whose work exemplifies precision and mastery.

Francis Libiran was introduced as the Takumi Master of Visionary Style, Stephanie Zubiri as the Takumi Master of Soulful Living, Chef Josh Boutwood as the Takumi Master of Progressive Cuisine, and Gerard Salonga as the Takumi Master of Harmonious Sound.
