Firms told: Obey wage hike

DOLE urges employees in Metro Manila to report violations

EMPLOYEES in Metro Manila were urged to report companies that do not comply with the P50 daily wage hike set to take effect on July 18, the National Wages and Productivity Commission said.

“Labor Secretary (Bienvenido) Laguesma has given in structions to regional and field offices in NCR to conduct la bor inspections to ensure the compliance of establishments with the new minimum wage and other labor standards,” said Maria Criselda Sy, executive director of the NWPC.

She said companies employing 10 workers or less as well as establishments severely affected by typhoons or man-made disasters may apply for exemptions.

The NCR tripartite wage board recently approved a P50 daily minimum wage increase in Metro Manila, which will benefit about 1.2 million workers.

The new minimum wage in Metro Manila now stands at P695, up from P645.

As this developed, Cavite Rep. Jolo Revilla has refiled his bill seeking a P200 across-the-board daily wage increase for all private sector minimum wage earners.

At the opening of the 20th Congress, Revilla refiled House Bill 78, also known as the Wage Hike for Mini mum Wage Workers Act, to push for long-overdue economic relief for the working class amid surging prices of goods and stagnant incomes.

The measure was first filed by Revilla during the 19th Congress and was later consolidated with simi lar proposals calling for a nationwide wage increase.

Charges vs. Rody formally sent by ICC prosecutor

THE Office of the Prosecutor has formally submitted the “Document Containing Charges” or DCC against former President Rodrigo Duterte, ICC-accredited lawyer Gilbert Andres said in a radio interview Saturday.

“This is the formal filing of specific charges against Mr. Duterte. We will now know the extent of the crimes charged against Mr. Duterte,” Andres told dzMM.

He said specific charges could include allegations of genderbased violence, illegal imprisonment, and torture, among other inhuman acts during the Duterte administration’s bloody war on illegal drugs.

“This (DCC) will define the evidence that the prosecution must present during the confirmation of charges on September 23,” Andres added.

Earlier this week, the ICC denied the request filed by Duterte’s lawyers seeking to disqualify two judges from hearing the case against him.

TROPICAL storm “Danas” (formerly “Bising”) may re-enter the Philippine area of responsibility by early Monday morning, the state weather bureau PAGASA said yesterday.

PAGASA said the reentry may be short and the typhoon is expected to exit PAR on Monday as well. The state weather bureau said“Danas” is forecast to intensify into a severe tropi-

cal storm within the next 24 hours and may weaken by Tuesday as it interacts with the landmass of eastern China.

“Considering these developments, the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to continue monitoring for updates related to this tropical cyclone,” PAGASA said.

As this developed, PAGASA deputy administrator Mar Villafuerte said the tropical cyclones that will enter the country this year will not be as severe as those recorded last year.

“It will not be as severe as last year where from October to November, in a span of one month, we had six consecutive typhoon and super typhoon categories,” Villafuerte said.

Science Secretary Renato Solidum said this was because the country is not suffering from La Niña this year, which is usually associated with above-normal rainfall conditions.

PAGASA earlier said the country may log 16 to 19 tropical cyclones this year.

THE bones of the missing “sabungeros” might be preserved in Taal Lake due to the lack of oxygen in its murky waters, Science Secretary Renato Solidum said amid growing calls for a full-scale search for the remains, allegedly dumped in the lake.

“The bone doesn’t decompose. The bone doesn’t care about decomposition, only the flesh decays,” Solidum said in a news forum on Saturday.

“If there’s no more oxygen, it won’t decompose. It will be preserved. So, it depends on the location,” he added.

Solidum said the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is coordinating with other scientists to assess the feasibility of using specialized marine equipment for the search.

A suspect turned whistleblower, Julie Patidongan, who was previously identified as “Alyas Totoy,” earlier said the remains of 34 missing “sabungeros” were disposed of in Taal Lake between 2021 and 2022. He said the victims were strangled, tied with sandbags, and thrown into the lake’s deeper areas.

As this developed, the National Police Commission on Saturday called on Patidongan to formally submit a complaint affidavit following his claims that certain police officers were involved in the disappearances.

“Napolcom can move three times faster if he can file a formal complaint,” Napolcom vice chairperson Calinisan said in an interview.

“We will have to find out if other cameras can handle the murky conditions of Taal Lake,” he said. The Department of Justice has already sought assistance from Japan for the use of remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) to scan the lakebed.

Romualdez to Congress: Prioritize economic measures

REELECTED Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Saturday vowed to push for the inclusion in the legislative agenda of the House of Representatives measures to reinforce the national goal of achieving upper-middle income (UMIC) status for the country by late 2025 or 2026.

Romualdez, Speaker of the recently concluded 19th Congress, shared Finance Secretary Ralph Recto’s optimism that the Philippines could reach UMIC status by the end of this year or in 2026, based on World Bank data and the country’s economic performance.

“I will espouse legislative priorities that would help sustain this momentum,” Romualdez said. “Our goal is to create a policy environment that supports job creation, raises incomes, and ensures that economic gains are felt across all sectors of society.”

To achieve this end, he said the 20th Congress—which opens later this month—should focus on measures that promote inclusive growth, improve public services, and support investments in infrastructure, digitalization, and human capital development.

Romualdez emphasized that legislative priorities should also include measures to strengthen food security, increase access to affordable health care and education, and expand infrastructure development through the Build Better More program.

Coast Guard, maritime authority boost cooperation on safety, compliance

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) have reinforced their maritime cooperation during the 4th PCG-MARINA Forum held on July 2 in Cebu City, focusing on improved safety, regulatory compliance, and responsive maritime governance.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan and MARINA Officerin-Charge Administrator Sonia Malaluan led the forum, which aligns with the administration’s campaign for more efficient public service delivery. Discussions centered on resolving issues involving supernumerary personnel aboard Philippine-chartered specialized vessels, as well as gaps in onboard training programs.

MARINA’s Advisory No. 2025-09, which outlines regulations on supernumeraries in Philippine-registered domestic ships, and a joint memorandum circular on domestic passenger vessel capacity limits, were key points of deliberation. Commodore Rejard Marfe, commander of the PCG District Southwestern Mindanao, also presented updates on the Coast Guard’s expanded operations and maritime law enforcement in BARMM.

Officials emphasized the importance of seamless coordination in advancing public safety, regional integration, and sustainable maritime development. The annual forum serves as a platform for aligning PCG and MARINA strategies to meet evolving maritime challenges and uphold national interests. Charles Dantes

Filipina with fake Moroccan husband intercepted at airport

BUREAU of Immigration (BI) officers intercepted a Filipina along with her fake Moroccan husband at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport while they were bound for Saudi Arabia. Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the 41-year-old woman and her 52-year-old Moroccan companion were stopped after officers found that their documents were counterfeit.

The female passenger initially claimed she was traveling to Morocco via Saudi Arabia with her alleged husband. However, investigators found inconsistencies in their statements and referred the marriage certificate for forensic examination.

The BI’s anti-fraud laboratory confirmed that the document was fake. Viado warned that individuals caught using falsified papers would face the harshest penalties under the law. Vito Barcelo

MMDA tows 24 vehicles in latest clearing operations in Manila, Caloocan

TWENTY-FOUR vehicles were impounded during the latest road clearing operations conducted by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in Manila and Caloocan over the weekend. A composite team addressed complaints about illegal parking and inspected roads including C-3 Road, Tamban, Tanigue, and Tulingan, issuing 42 citation tickets and towing 14 cars to the Tumana impounding site.

In Manila, the MMDA and the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau monitored Carlos Palanca Street, where 25 vehicles were ticketed and 10 impounded. MMDA Chairman Romando Artes reminded motorists not to park on Mabuhay Lanes or sidewalks, as these routes will serve as alternatives once the EDSA rehabilitation begins.

The EDSA Rebuild Project has been postponed to allow time for comprehensive rerouting plans. Artes assured the public that clearing operations will continue in coordination with local governments. Joel E. Zurbano

“In support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision for a Bagong Pilipinas, I and our allies in the House would work to ensure every law we pass brings us closer to an economy that works for all Filipinos,” said Romualdez, president of Lakas-CMD, the biggest political bloc in the House comprising about a third of the chamber.

He added that sound budgeting and responsible legislation go hand in hand and expressed confidence that the House would continue working with the administration to pass measures that enable broad-based progress and economic security, while staying mindful of inflation risks and fiscal sustainability.

DPWH speeds up Guicam Bridge construction in Zamboanga Sibugay

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Saturday said it is expediting the construction of the Guicam Bridge Project in Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Senior Undersecretary Emil Sadain said in a DPWH news release that all major foundation works have been completed, including the installation of 115 bored piles—99 offshore piles measuring 2.2 meters in diameter and 16 land-based piles measuring 1.2 meters in diameter.

The P1.155-billion Guicam Bridge, part of the Build Better More program of

Senator Mark Villar on Saturday denied that he had any participation in joint venture agreements (JVAs) entered into by PrimeWater and various local water districts facilitated through the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA), when it was still an attached agency of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) during his term as secretary.

“I wish to take this opportunity to

the Marcos administration, has reached 87.9 percent completion. It will link Olutanga Island to the mainland through the municipality of Alicia. Sadain, who oversees DPWH’s flagship infrastructure projects, visited the site Friday and directed contractors to intensify girder installation and concrete works.

To date, four girders have been successfully launched at Span 1, with the corresponding deck slab already completed. Girder fabrication is progressing, with 40 out of 48 girders finished and 36 units stressed and grouted.

clarify that I have no direct or indirect ownership or controlling interest in PrimeWater,” Villar said in a statement.

On Approach B (Olutanga Island side), retaining wall and embankment construction is ongoing. At the same time, portland cement concrete pavement and line canal works are underway on Approach A (mainland side).

Sadain said the bridge, which spans the Canalizo Strait, will measure 540.80 meters long and provide a navigational clearance of 14.80 meters in height and 24 meters in width. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve logistics, and strengthen connectivity across southwestern Mindanao.

“During my tenure as Secretary of Public Works, I did not participate in any capacity whatsoever in any transactions or potential transactions between PrimeWater and any of its partner districts. My focus then had been to implement our national goal of creating critical community infrastructure,” the senator added. Villar served as the chief of the DPWH from 2016 to 2021 during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte. He stepped down from the post to run for a Senate seat in the 2022 elections.

PrimeWater Infrastructure Corp. is owned by the Villar family. The senator released the statement after Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said JVAs between PrimeWater and local water districts increased in 2019, a time when Villar headed the DPWH.

Castro also noted that the Office of the President met Friday with LWUA and the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel to discuss the current concerns of PrimeWater consumers.

LWUA Administrator Jose Moises Salonga earlier said the agency completed its initial investigation into complaints about the PrimeWater JVAs and had submitted its findings to the office of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Salonga pointed out that LWUA was previously attached to the DPWH, and the possible conflict may involve former officials. Marcos earlier directed a probe into PrimeWater’s operations following a surge in complaints. Meanwhile, a resolution has been filed in the House of Representatives seeking an inquiry into the JVAs. PrimeWater, for its part, said it is open to any dialogue to address the issues and pledged to cooperate with LWUA.

P645m fund for road projects in North Luzon

THE national government is implementing over P645 million worth of road projects in Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) this year to support peace efforts and boost development in former conflict areas, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) announced Monday.

Under the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan (PAMANA) program, OPAPRU reported 24 ongoing infrastructure projects, including farm-to-market roads, community facilities, and flood control systems. As of 2024, 19.3 kilometers of roads and bridges have already been completed in the region. For 2025, about P110 million is allocated for Region II and P535.9 million for CAR.

NTF-ELCAC urges

Director Anthony Peña of the PAMANA National Project Management Office said the projects are 76.46% complete and expected to improve agricultural productivity and connectivity for conflict-affected and geographically isolated communities.

OPAPRU Secretary Carlito Galvez emphasized the role of the military in identifying priority areas and ensuring the success of these initiatives.

Congress to weigh security bills carefully

THE National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict

(NTF-ELCAC) is calling for “balanced and vigilant” deliberation on key security-related bills pending in Congress, warning of potential risks to national security and democratic stability.

NTF-ELCAC Executive Director

Undersecretary Ernesto Torres Jr. raised concern over House Bill 1272, filed by the Makabayan bloc, which seeks to repeal the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020. At the same time, he expressed support for Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa’s proposal to disqualify partylist groups allegedly linked to terrorist organizations.

“These two proposals raise an essential question: How do we protect democracy without letting it be exploited by those who reject it?” Torres said.

A NEW group of 13 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Israel has returned home through the government’s voluntary repatriation program.

The returnees arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 on Friday night, having left Tel Aviv and made a layover in Bangkok before their flight to Manila. Upon their arrival, they were welcomed by officials and representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the Manila International Airport

Torres defended the Anti-Terror Law, saying it has not been used against peaceful dissent and is aimed at preventing attacks and radicalization. He noted that the Supreme Court had upheld the law’s constitutionality and built-in safeguards.

On Dela Rosa’s bill, Torres cited testimonies from former rebels alleging that some party-list groups act as legal fronts for the CPP-NPA-NDF.

“The party-list system should amplify the marginalized, not shield those seeking to dismantle democracy,” he said. Torres emphasized that true civic space cannot tolerate deception masquerading as representation.

He reiterated NTF-ELCAC’s commitment to protecting democratic institutions and warned against complacency. “It is our duty to ensure the law protects the people, not those who wish to harm them,” he said.

The National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) noted that several provinces in Region II, including Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, and Cagayan, have been declared insurgency-free, paving the way for fasttracked development.

The peace process with the Cordillera Bodong Administration–Cordillera People’s Liberation Army (CBA–CPLA) is nearing completion, with former rebels receiving integration, livelihood, and educational support. Galvez also urged troops to assist surrendering rebels in applying for amnesty, noting that 25 applications have been submitted in Isabela alone.

Military leaders said these efforts are key to ending internal conflict and allowing a pivot toward national defense priorities.

The repatriated workers were also offered livelihood, health, and welfare programs, as well as TESDA training vouchers to help them transition to a new life.

This assistance is part of the government’s comprehensive reintegration support program, as directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Ambassador Aileen Mendiola personally bid farewell to the OFWs during a pre-departure briefing at the embassy.

She expressed her gratitude and encouraged them to participate in reintegration programs and psychosocial counseling offered by the government.

This latest batch follows the arrival of eight Filipinos who were also repatriated from Israel last Thursday. Most of the returning workers were caregivers and hotel staff. One of the returnees, Josephine Sanglitan Sandoi, a 51-year-old Davao City resident, recounted how a missile struck near her shelter, injuring some co-workers. “It was not easy what you went through. We will ensure that you receive adequate assistance and support in your reintegration,” said DMW Undersecretary Dominique RubiaTutay. So far, at least 47 OFWs have opted for voluntary repatriation due to the conflict between Israel and Iran. Since October 2023, a total of 1,380 Filipinos have been assisted in returning home. As of July 3, more than 30 OFWs had undergone voluntary repatriation, and 84 others are confirmed for the next round.

Manila launches plan to end garbage crisis

THE city government of Manila launched on Saturday its first citywide clean-up and declogging drive while allowing residents to track developments online.

The campaign responds to growing public frustration over uncollected garbage, clogged drainage systems, and heavy flooding in recent weeks.

Under Executive Order No. 3, signed by Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso earlier this week, all 896 barangays are mandated to observe Saturday as a regular clean-up and declogging day.

Residents can monitor the city government’s efforts through the hashtags #LinisKoMaynila and #MakeManilaCleanAgain on social media.

– US President Donald Trump said Russia just wanted to “keep killing people” and hinted at sanctions after Moscow launched its largest ever drone and missile attack on Ukraine in the threeyear-old war.

Trump said Friday he was “very unhappy” about his telephone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying: “He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people, it’s no good.”

The US president said he and Putin talked about sanctions “a lot”, adding: “He understands that it may be coming”.

Hours-long Russian bombardments sent Ukrainians scurrying for shelters across the country and came after the call between Trump and Putin, which ended without a breakthrough.

AFP journalists in Kyiv heard drones buzzing over the capital and explosions ringing out throughout the night as Ukrainian air defense systems fended off the attack.

“Refiling this measure is a clear message that we are not giving up on the fight for wage justice. Our minimum wage earners deserve more than token increases. They deserve real support,” Revilla said.

“Our workers kept our economy alive during the hardest times—from the pandemic to the economic downturn. It’s time we repay their sacrifices with more than words…A livable wage is not a luxury—it is the foundation of a just society,” Revilla added.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke to Trump Friday and said they agreed to work on bolstering Kyiv’s defenses.

“We spoke about opportunities in air defense and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies,” Zelensky said on social media after the call.

Tymur, a Kyiv resident who said he had experienced previous Russian attacks, told AFP that the assault in the early hours of Friday felt different from others.

“Nothing like this attack had ever happened before. There have never been so many explosions,” he said.

The Kremlin said Friday it was “preferable” to achieve the goals of its invasion through political and diplomatic means.

“But as long as that is not possible, we are continuing the special operation,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, referring to Russia’s invasion.

Dalai Lama, on eve of 90th, aims to live for decades more

MCLEOD Ganj, India – The Dalai Lama said Saturday he dreamed of living for decades more, as the Buddhist spiritual leader prayed with thousands of exiled Tibetans on the eve of his 90th birthday.

Thumping drums and deep horns reverberated from the Indian hilltop temple, as a chanting chorus of red-robed monks and nuns offered long-life prayers for Tenzin Gyatso, who followers believe is the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama.

Looking in good health, dressed in traditional maroon monk robes and a flowing yellow wrap, he led prayers – days after confirming that the 600-year-old Tibetan Buddhist institution will continue after his death.

Many exiled Tibetans fear China will name its own successor to the Dalai Lama, to bolster control over a territory it poured troops into in 1950 and has ruled ever since.

“So far, I have done my best and with the continued blessings of Avalokiteshvara (a Buddhist spiritual protector), I hope to live another 30 or 40 years, continuing to serve sentient beings and the Buddha Dharma,” he said, referring to the teachings of the Buddha.

Followers of the Dalai Lama laud his tireless campaign for greater autonomy for Tibet, a vast high-altitude plateau about the size of South Africa.

‘Experience happiness’

artillery strikes on several parts of Eastern Ukraine overnight Friday to Saturday, regional governor Sergiy Lysak said on Telegram.

Zelensky said Friday air alerts began echoing out across the country as the Trump-Putin call was getting under way.

He urged the United States in particular to increase pressure on Moscow, which on Friday announced fresh territorial gains on the front line with the capture of a village in the Donetsk region.

Poland said its embassy building in Kyiv had been damaged in the attack but that staff were unharmed.

In Kyiv, one person was pulled from the rubble after the strikes, which also wounded at least 26 people, emergency services said.

The barrage, according to the air force, comprised 539 drones and 11 missiles.

A representative of Ukraine’s air force told Ukrainian media that the attack was the largest of the Russian invasion. AFP

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Friday said 15 police officers who allegedly carried out executions in the missing “sabungeros” case have been placed under restricted duty.

“Yet, the common desire shared by all, including the Tibetan people, is the wish to avoid suffering and to experience happiness.”

The charismatic Buddhist had previously said the institution would continue only if there was popular demand – and his confirmation on Wednesday it would has reassured followers around the globe.

He said he had received multiple appeals from Tibetans in Tibet and in exile, as well as from Buddhists from across the Himalayan region, Mongolia and parts of Russia and China.

He said responsibility for identifying the 15th Dalai Lama “will rest exclusively” with his office, the India-based Gaden Phodrang Trust.

Self-declared atheist and Communist China, which condemns the Nobel Peace Prize winner as a rebel and separatist, issued a swift response.

China said on Wednesday that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama “must be approved by the central government” in Beijing, and that it would be carried out “by drawing lots from a golden urn”, foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters.

That urn is held by Beijing, and the Dalai Lama has already warned that, when used dishonestly, it lacks “any spiritual quality.” AFP

Hamas says ready to start Gaza ceasefire talks ‘immediately’

GAZA CITY – Hamas on Friday said it was ready to start talks “immediately” on a proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, where the civil defense agency said Israel’s ongoing offensive killed more than 50 people.

The announcement came after it held consultations with other Palestinian factions and before a visit on Monday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington, where President Donald Trump is pushing for an end to the war, now in its 21st month.

“The movement is ready to engage immediately and seriously in a cycle of negotiations on the mechanism to put in place” the terms of a draft US-backed truce proposal received from mediators, the militant group said in a statement. Hamas ally Islamic Jihad said it supported ceasefire talks, but demanded “guarantees” that Israel “will not resume its aggression” once hostages held in Gaza are freed.

Trump, when asked about Hamas’ response aboard Air Force One on Friday, said: “That’s good. They haven’t briefed me on it. We have to get it over with. We have to do something about Gaza.”

The conflict in Gaza began with Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which sparked a massive Israeli offensive aimed at destroying Hamas and bringing home all the hostages seized by militants.

Two previous ceasefires brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States have seen temporary halts in fighting, coupled with the return of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

Netanyahu earlier on Friday vowed to bring home all the hostages held in Gaza, after coming under massive domestic pressure over their fate.

“I feel a deep commitment, first and foremost, to ensure the return of all our abductees, all of them,” he said. AFP

Search continues after building collapse kills 14 in Pakistan

KARACHI – Rescue teams pulled more bodies from the rubble of a five-storey building collapse in Pakistan overnight, taking the toll on Saturday to 14 as the recovery operation continued for a second day.

The residential block crumbled shortly after 10:00 am on Friday in the impoverished Lyari neighborhood of Karachi, which was once plagued by gang violence and considered one of the most dangerous areas in Pakistan.

Abid Jalaluddin Shaikh, leading the government’s 1122 rescue service at the scene, told AFP the operation continued through the night “without interruption.”

“It may take eight to 12 hours more to complete,” he said.

Police official Summiaya Syed, at a Karachi hospital where the bodies were received, told AFP that the death toll on Saturday morning stood at 14, half of them women, with 13 injured.

Up to 100 people had been living in the building, senior police officer Arif Aziz told AFP.

All six members of 70-year-old Jumho Maheshwari’s family were at his flat on the first floor when he left for work early in the morning.

“Nothing is left for me now – my family is all trapped and all I can do is pray for their safe recovery,” he told AFP on Friday afternoon.

Another resident, Maya Sham Jee, said her brother’s family was also trapped under the rubble.

“It’s a tragedy for us. The world has been changed for our family,” she told AFP.

“We are helpless and just looking at the rescue workers to bring our loved ones back safely.”

Shankar Kamho, 30, a resident of the building who was out at the time, said around 20 families were living inside.

He described how his wife called him in a panic that the building was cracking.

I told her to get out immediately,” he told AFP at the scene.

“She went to warn the neighbors, but one woman told her ‘this building will stand for at least 10 more years,’” he said.

“Still, my wife took our daughter and left. About 20 minutes later, the building collapsed.” AFP

ALLIANZ PNB Life placed sustainability at the forefront of its business agenda during the Zero Summit, with chief marketing officer Gino Riola emphasizing the need for companies to embed environmental and social responsibility into their core strategies.

Speaking at the event’s opening session, Riola urged fellow business leaders to move beyond token gestures and embrace purpose-driven leadership that aligns sustainability with longterm business goals.

“Sustainability must be integrated into the business model. It should not be mere optics. The effort goes to waste if it can’t be continued,” he said as he discussed how aligning ESG with business goals helps realize the triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.

AZPNBL’s ongoing partnership with SOS Food Rescue Philippines is a key example of this commitment in action. Since launching the collaboration in 2023, the company has donated a food rescue vehicle, conducted food drives, and mobilized employee volunteers in support of SOS’s mission to redistribute surplus food to underserved communities.

“It is in these partnerships that our mission can reach farther, respond faster, and serve more communities. We recover surplus and deliver it to those who need it most, creating a food system that is not only charitable but circular by design,” said SOS Food Rescue Philippines country general manager Rachel Marie Q. Luna Luna cited the support from partners like Allianz PNB Life, for which SOS has already surpassed its year-to-date target with more than 2.5 million meals served.

Riola also highlighted AZPNBL’s carbon reduction efforts and its upcoming move to a certified green building in Makati, aligning with Allianz Group’s global climate action agenda.

TDEI key to inclusive growth—LCF

HE League of Corporate Foundations (LCF) is pushing the conversation on corporate social responsibility (CSR) further, placing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) front and center at its 2025 CSR Conference and Expo on July 1, 2025 at the Dusit Thani Manila in Makati City.

With the theme “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity for Shared Prosperity,” the conference spotlighted how inclusive business practices can help rebuild a more equitable Philippine economy, particularly for women and work-challenged individuals like persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Held during the National CSR Week, the annual event gathered business and foundation leaders to reimagine CSR as a long-term strategy for sustainable development.

LCF chairperson Shem Jose W. Garcia, also executive director of Vivant Foundation, emphasized that DEI is not just a corporate buzzword but a practical framework for unlocking shared prosperity in a post-pandemic recovery landscape.

Overlapping barriers

Garcia, who opened the conference with a call for inclusive transformation, underscored the importance of intersectionality in understanding inequality.

“As CSR practitioners, most of our projects seek to uplift those left behind in poverty, finding solutions that would benefit the greatest number of people,” he said. “However, when creating and implementing programs for the many, we often risk leaving behind those with special needs or limited capacity to benefit from these programs.”

He explained that genuine inclusion means recognizing how gender, disability, ethnicity, and income status overlap and compound exclusion.

“A person may be disadvantaged not just by one category, but by how these categories intersect. That’s why understanding intersectionality is key,” he said.

Gender inclusion

In discussing the country’s DEI landscape, Garcia noted that while the Philippines has made commendable progress in terms of gender inclusion, the corporate ladder remains uneven.

“There are now more women in the workforce, almost reaching parity in numbers. But when you look at the boardrooms and the executive level, men still dominate,” he said. “We’ve improved, but we’re not all the way there.”

LCF’s members, many of whom operate in industries where gender gaps remain entrenched, are now being encouraged to support leadership pipelines, mentoring programs, and policy reforms that open more doors for women, especially at the decision-making level.

Garcia also shared how the League’s internal reflection on workforce gaps led him to examine the underrepresentation of persons with disability (PWD), particularly the deaf, in corporate settings.

He stressed that improving workplace diversity begins with fixing gaps in access to education, training, and credentialing, particularly for PWDs, indigenous peoples, and LGBTQ+ individuals who remain on the margins of mainstream employment.

Beyond a buzzword

Garcia addressed criticisms of DEI, particularly in countries like the U.S. where the term has become politicized.

“Some companies there have rolled back their DEI programs, and the backlash from the public has been telling. It turns out, people do value inclusion, and those who stayed true to their commitments were rewarded with public trust,” he said.

While DEI was not part of LCF’s original core pillars, Garcia said the spirit of inclusivity has always guided the coalition’s work.

Garcia clarified that LCF does not directly implement projects, but instead serves as a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration across its 90+ member foundations.

Legacy of collaboration

“Our strength is in connection. We bring together groups working in the same space, help them align their efforts, and enable them to share successful models that others can replicate,” he said.

THE Philippines is setting the benchmark for workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in Southeast Asia, according to the latest Hiring, Compensation & Benefits Report 2025 released by Jobstreet by SEEK.

The report revealed that 63 percent of companies in the Philippines have adopted DEI initiatives, leading the region ahead of Thailand at 58 percent, Indonesia at 56 percent, Singapore

One such example is LIFE, an early nutrition program currently being implemented in Basilan. Spearheaded by the Zuellig Foundation and supported by other members like Jollibee Foundation and Shell Foundation, LIFE pools the strengths of various organizations without relying on LCFadministered funding.

Garcia has served on LCF’s board since 2020 and assumed the chairmanship in December 2024. As his term concludes, he reflects on the value of shared leadership and evolving priorities.

“We rotate leadership so that fresh perspectives come in. I’ll continue my work through Vivant Foundation, but the DEI conversation doesn’t stop here,” he said.

Next year, LCF marks its 30th anniversary, an occasion Garcia says the organization is already preparing for.

“It may not be fancy, we’re always mindful of resources, but it will be meaningful. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how far CSR has come, and how much more we can achieve through inclusive, collaborative efforts,” he said. Othel

PH tops Southeast Asia in workplace diversity efforts

at 42 percent, and Malaysia at 40 percent.

The study noted that Filipino employers are also implementing a wide range of inclusive practices, showing a strong commitment to fostering equitable workplaces.

Among the key measures adopted by Philippine companies are anti-discrimination and harassment policies, the formation of employee resource groups, unconscious bias

training, regular DEI assessments, and mentorship programs for underrepresented groups.

Filipino firms are also advancing fair hiring practices, with over half setting clear DEI goals, 47 percent adopting blind resume screening to eliminate bias, and 77 percent regularly updating job descriptions to ensure fairness and inclusivity.

The report attributes the Philippines’ regional leadership in DEI to both cultural openness and supportive government policies.

National legislation, such as the Anti-Age Discrimination Act, continues to reinforce inclusive workplace standards.

Jobstreet by SEEK has also taken an active role in promoting DEI when it partnered with the Philippine LGBT Chamber of Commerce for the “Pride in Careers” campaign in 2024, offering free and discounted job postings to LGBTQ+inclusive companies.

This year, the platform launched a partnership with the Filipina CEO Circle to bolster women’s leadership and implemented its Fair Hiring Program to protect workers from exploitation.

“Our goal is to ensure that job seekers don’t just find jobs, but also find workplaces where they are valued, supported, and respected,” said Jobstreet by SEEK head of marketing Joey Yusingco.

THRILLA IN MANILA @ 50

Lawyer’s artistic homage to Ali and the fight ‘my father witnessed’

(IN 2023, the author released his now soldout book Just A Lawyer Drawing Sports Icons, a collection of his widely praised illustrations featuring world-class athletes. Among those featured was bowling legend and Hall-of-Famer Paeng Nepomuceno, who also penned the foreword.

As the 50th anniversary of the historic “Thrilla in Manila” draws near, lawyer Jovi Neri shares his re ections on the nal sports icon he illustrated for the book—none other than the legendary Muhammad Ali.

The “Thrilla in Manila”—the third and nal showdown between undisputed heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and former champion Joe Frazier—was one of boxing’s most iconic bouts.

Held on October 1, 1975, at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City (then still part of Rizal Province), the venue was temporarily renamed the“Philippine Coliseum”for the historic event. The brutal contest was won by Ali when Frazier refused to answer the bell after the 14th round. – Editor)

WHEN I decided to draw Muhammad Ali as the nal sports icon in my art book, I aimed for a fresh but meaningful portrayal of Ali from Thrilla in Manila because my dad, Julius, attended the ght.

Muhammad Ali is depicted in the artwork triumphantly raising his hands after Joe Frazier was unable to continue following 14 grueling rounds. The piece is part of the now sold-out ICONS book, a collection of illustrations featuring legendary athletes from around the world.

I found this photo of Ali having just celebrated after he was informed that Frazier would not continue. This lasted only momentarily because Ali immediately went down to the canvas from exhaustion. This image is hardly used when the ght is remembered, perhaps because it was in a grainy black and white photo. This is where I was able to put some artistic input by creating the artwork in color and adding some highlights. However, the background charcoal portrait is not from the 1975 Manila ght, but is a quintessential Ali pro le to frame the full body image properly.

My drawing may perhaps be the only portrayal

of Ali in full color with both his arms raised in victory from Thrill in Manila because that shot only lasted for a few seconds. It may also be the only art from the ght drawn by a son of someone who watched it.

This year is the 50th anniversary of perhaps the greatest sporting event ever held on Philippine soil. So here I

am sharing my artwork as a gesture of celebration to commemorate the event, and if the organizers or any boxing fans want to use it - I will happily share it for free.

Here’s an excerpt from the book.

“For all the countless things that made Muhammad Ali ‘The Greatest,’ it was the Thrilla In Manila ght against Joe Frazier in 1975 that hit home for me. The most popular athlete of that generation fought for the world title right here in the Philippines, making it probably the biggest sporting event ever held on Philippine soil. The ght became one of the greatest heavyweight battles ever because the protagonists slugged it out until they virtually emptied all they had left in their proverbial tank. Experts even conceded that both ghters were never the same after this ght. The image I used of Ali’s arms raised in victory came from a black and white photo, which provided me some artistic leeway in colorizing it. Since that ght featured a later-period Ali, it was only logical to use a younger Ali for the background side portrait. I had my personal reasons to draw Ali from this ght. Back in college, I used to go to Ali Mall, named after Ali himself, because that historic match took place just one block away in the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. The other more compelling reason was that my father, Julius, a huge boxing fan, attended the ght. He was a thirty-year-old lawyer with three children, meaning I was not born yet, when he watched one of the greatest moments in all of sports. But here I am drawing a snapshot from an event my dad attended while using the skills I developed as a kid by drawing on his discarded legal paper drafts.

Filipino Ultra Runner Castro conquers Pistoia Abetone again, resets

AGE, heat, and elevation stood no chance against the re of Filipino ultrarunner Lorenzo Castro Jr., who once again proved why he is a force to reckon with on the Italian running scene. Under the blistering Tuscan sun, Castro defended his title at the gruelling 30-kilometer Pistoia Abetone race held recently, finishing first with a record-breaking time of 1:59:50—beating his own 2024 finish of 2:00:26.

This year’s edition of the race was brutal. With temperatures soaring between 37 to 40 degrees Celsius and a punishing 900-meter elevation gain toward San Marcello, the challenge became more than physical—it was mental warfare. But the Florence-based athlete, who just turned 43 last week, dug deep, silencing the body’s pleas to stop with the willpower only a seasoned champion possesses.

Castro described it as one of the toughest battles he has fought on the road. “It was hard, sweaty, full of moments in which the body said ‘enough,’ but the head and heart said ‘keep going, laki ng di erence time ko po last year. This half

season last run ko na po ito dahil summer na”. he said. His grit earned him the top spot once again, ahead of Italian runners Petrucci Morgan of Orecchiella G. (2:01:12) and Filoni Alain of Amoretto ASD (2:01:43), who took second and third, respectively.

This triumph adds to Castro’s blazing half-season performance in Italy, where he’s been storming podiums across various distances. After being the top Filipino male nisher in the 2025 Rome Marathon last March 16, he has gone full throttle, racking up impressive victories and nishes—winning the 2025 Corri alla Romola (14.5K) in 52:07, topping the Pontassieve Half-Marathon in 1:18:01, placing 5th overall in the Firenze Half-Marathon with a time of 1:09:37, nishing 7th in the Run Notturno di San Giovanni (9.9K), and claiming another title at the Trofeo Questura Firenze (11K) in 36:56.

From at roads to mountainous climbs, day races to night runs, Castro has consistently shown that his passion for running burns hotter than any Italian summer. With each stride, each nish line, and each win, he continues to raise the Philippine ag high in international endurance racing.

THE establishment of Pilipinas Climbing Inc. (PCI) marks a game-changing moment for the rapidly growing sport of climbing in the Philippines, opening the door for national recognition, international competition, and long-term development.

Led by sports advocate and obstacle racing pioneer Atty. Al Agra, PCI is now the o cial body driving the progress of sport climbing in the country. With recognition already secured from the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC), the organization is actively working toward membership in the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)—a move expected to pave the way for sustainable funding, grassroots expansion, and broader athlete support.

“Climbing has been growing quietly across the country. With PCI in place, we can now organize, represent, and elevate the sport on all fronts,” said Agra during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum. “We want to make climbing

foundation of EASL’s Future Champions program in place, Your Game now sends an even louder message to up-and-coming youth players across the region — that their heroes once stood where they stand: with a ball, a court, and a dream they made their own.

“‘Your Game’ is more than a campaign — it’s an open invitation,”said Vice President and Head of Marketing Mat Morgan. “Whether it comes from us, our teams, or the fans, it always says the same thing: this league is for you. It’s personal, it’s cultural, and it’s built to welcome everyone into the story.” In 2025–26, EASL is going bigger. More teams from more leagues. Three from Japan. A rst-ever squad from Mongolia. And the league is just getting started. That means more regional rivalries, more hometown heroes, and more must-see moments — and the fans will be right in the middle of it all.

inclusive—for youth, for Para athletes, for every Filipino.”

Just months into its formation, PCI is already elding a national team, with athletes set to compete this week at the ASEAN Sport Climbing Championships in Malaysia. Next up are tournaments in Singapore and the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December.

More than just competitive targets, the formation of PCI brings much-needed structure and direction. The organization now oversees the regulation, promotion, and expansion of the sport, with over 20 climbing gyms nationwide already forming the early backbone of local development. PCI is also aiming to introduce more coaching programs, support systems for athletes, and eventually, the creation of regional hubs. PCI chairman Franz Lim emphasized the sport’s potential: “Climbing is not only exciting and accessible, but Filipinos have what it takes to be world-class. With proper support, we can produce Olympic-level athletes.”

HOW RAIN AFFECTS CATS AND DOGS

THE pitter-patter of rain often brings a sense of calm and coziness to humans, but how does this weather phenomenon impact our beloved pets? Cats and dogs, with their unique physiology and behavior, experience the effects of rain in various ways.

Physical Effects of Rain on Dogs

Hypothermia and Cold Stress

As highlighted in "The Rainy Weather and Your Pet" by The Filipino Vet, prolonged exposure to cold and wet conditions can lead to hypothermia, especially in smaller breeds, puppies, senior dogs, or those with thin coats. The dog's body temperature can drop to dangerous levels, causing shivering, lethargy, and in severe cases, organ failure.

Skin and Coat Issues

Rainwater can strip away the natural oils from a dog's coat, leading to dry, itchy skin. Furthermore, as noted in "7 Ways Different Weather Conditions Affect Our Doggos and Cattos" by Maxime, the damp environment can create ideal conditions for bacterial and fungal growth, potentially causing skin infections like "hot spots" or dermatitis.

Respiratory Problems

The moisture in the air, combined with potential allergens like pollen or mold spores washed down by the rain, can exacerbate respiratory issues in dogs. The Filipino Vet says dogs with pre-existing conditions like asthma or bronchitis may experience increased coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing during and after rainfall.

Leptospirosis Risk

Rain can also increase the risk of certain

diseases. As stated in "Rainy Day Dangers for Dogs" by PetMD, leptospirosis, a bacterial infection spread through contaminated water, poses a significant threat. Dogs can contract this disease by drinking from puddles or swimming in contaminated water, leading to kidney and liver damage.

Physical Effects of Rain on Cats

Cats, with their meticulous grooming habits and generally indoor preference, also experience the effects of rain, albeit differently.

Hypothermia and Cold Stress

Similar to dogs, cats can suffer from hypothermia if exposed to cold and wet conditions for extended periods. As noted by The Filipino Vet, this is especially true for kit-

tens, senior cats, and those with underlying health issues.

Skin and Coat Problems

While cats are adept at grooming, prolonged exposure to rain can still affect their coat. The moisture can lead to matting, tangles, and a loss of the coat's insulating properties, making them feel colder and more uncomfortable.

Respiratory Irritation

The increased humidity and potential allergens in the air during rainfall can irritate a cat's respiratory system. Cats with asthma or other respiratory conditions may experience increased coughing or wheezing.

Behavioral Changes in Cats and Dogs

Dogs and the Outdoors

Many dogs dislike being in the rain. As mentioned in Maxime’s article, some dogs may become reluctant to go outside for walks or bathroom breaks. Others might become anxious or clingy, seeking shelter and comfort from their owners.

Cats and Indoor Retreats Cats are often more sensitive to changes in the environment.

Increased Anxiety and Hiding

As noted in The Filipino Vet article, the sound of rain, especially during thunderstorms, can be frightening for some cats.

FORMER MAKATI MAYOR ABBY LEADS OPENING OF COUNTRY'S FIRST ANIMAL CARE FACILITY

FORMER Makati Mayor Abby Binay opened the new Makati Animal Care Facility, the first of its kind in the country which offers free consultation every Monday, free vaccinations, and deworming with the first dose provided free and subsequent doses at an affordable rate of P30.

There will also be free spaying and castration services to be offered on a pre-scheduled basis.

The mayor said strays who are caught will be put up for adoption to give them a chance at having a family of their own.

Microchipping services are also available from Tuesday to Friday.

Mayor Abby said the facility, opened June 25, is “another milestone” in her administration’s commitment to promote animal welfare and nurture a safe and pet-friendly environment.

“We are honored to be the first local government unit to open this facility, which is dedicated to the care and protection of animals,” Mayor Abby said.

“With this facility, we hope to promote greater awareness for animal welfare and promote a culture of care, love and concern for them in our homes and in our communities,” said.

She also stressed that the city encourages and supports responsible pet ownership.

“We want to encourage Makatizens to be responsible pet owners and treat them humanely. With the services that we offer, there should be no reason for neglecting their pets. Being a responsible pet owner also means being mindful of one’s responsibilities in a community,” she said.

The city has a working partnership with the Animal Kingdom Foundation and Biyaya Animal Care, both advocates for animal welfare, she said.

Located in Sultana St. in Barangay Olympia, the facility is equipped with features for animal care and safety. It has specialized rooms such as a consultation room, two surgery rooms, two recovery rooms, and two food preparation rooms.

The center will also serve as the office of the Veterinary Services Department (VSD), which is in charge of issuance of certifications such as Meat Handler’s Licenses, Veterinary Inspection Certificates, and Veterinary Health Certificates for pet travel.

The facility also ensures that impounded animals receive proper care in a safe and humane environment.

The facility includes ventilated rooms with cages distributed across two levels.

They may seek refuge under furniture, in closets, or in other secluded areas, exhibiting signs of anxiety such as flattened ears, dilated pupils, and a tucked-in tail.

Reduced Activity Levels

Many cats become less active during rainy weather, preferring to conserve energy and stay warm indoors. They might sleep more or spend more time observing the rain from a safe, dry location.

Changes in Appetite

Some cats may experience a decrease in appetite during rainy periods, possibly due to stress or a change in their routine.

Protecting Your Pets During Rainy Weather

Providing Shelter It is crucial to ensure that pets have access to dry, sheltered areas. This includes providing indoor spaces for both cats and dogs and, for dogs, offering covered outdoor areas like dog houses or porches.

Drying Off After Exposure

After a walk or outdoor play, dogs should be thoroughly dried with a towel, especially in areas like their paws and ears. Cats should be encouraged to groom themselves, but owners can also gently dry them with a towel if they allow it.

Monitoring Health

Owners should monitor their pets for any signs of illness, such as shivering, lethargy, coughing, sneezing, skin irritation, or changes in appetite. If any concerning symptoms arise, a veterinarian should be consulted promptly.

Providing Enrichment

To combat boredom and anxiety, owners can provide indoor enrichment activities. This might include interactive toys, puzzle feeders, or extra playtime.

Safe Outdoor Practices

When walking dogs in the rain, owners should use waterproof gear, such as raincoats and boots, to keep them as dry as possible. Avoiding puddles and standing water can minimize the risk of leptospirosis and other waterborne diseases.

Rain affects cats and dogs in various ways, from physical health to behavioral changes. By understanding these effects and taking appropriate precautions, owners can ensure their pets remain safe, comfortable, and happy during the rainy season.

MPAVING THE WAY FOR PH COFFEE ON THE WORLD STAGE

ICHAEL Harris Conlin’s love affair with all things coffee began when he was just 12 years old, staying at his father’s house in Nova Scotia, Canada.

“My father had an espresso machine. He would teach me how to foam milk, how to pull my first espresso. He would experiment with different ingredients such as cardamom and vanilla. That’s my strongest memory of my experience with coffee as a young boy,” he said in an exclusive tete-a-tete with Manila Standard Cravings.

Several years later, in 2019, Conlin made history as the first Filipino barista to reach the semi-finals of the World Barista Championship in Boston, USA, placing 15th in the world.

“When I became national champion in 2019, my father told me, ‘I was the one who taught you how to do that,’” he recalled.

This year, Conlin was again named as the 2025 Philippine National Barista Champion following his standout performance at the Philippine Barista Competition held recently at MAFBEX.

“This win isn’t just mine. It belongs to the farmers, the roasters, the scientists, the baristas, and the dreamers who all worked together to create something extraordinary. Coffee is about co-creation — and that’s what we’re celebrating,” Conlin said.

With the victory, he will represent the Philippines at the World Barista Championship

to be held at HostMilano in Milan, Italy from October 17 to 21, 2025 – his second time competing on the world stage.

This year, his goal is even higher: to reach the global top 6 — and to bring home the

World Barista Championship title to the Philippines for the first time.

Ben&Ben deepens bond with each other

Five

SOME movie moments stay with us long after the credits roll—and more often than not, it’s the kiss that seals the deal. Whether it’s in the rain, under the stars, or after a long build-up of tension, these scenes have become more than just romantic, they’ve become cinematic landmarks. In time for International Kissing Day this July 6, here are five unforgettable onscreen kisses that made audiences hold their breath, cheer, or hit rewind.

The Notebook (2004) Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams gave us one of the most passionate reunions in movie history. That rain-soaked kiss by the lake, years after their heartbreaking breakup, became an instant pop culture reference and a gold standard for love story climaxes.

Spider-Man (2002)

Tobey Maguire ’s web-slinging hero kissing

Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane upside-down in the rain is one of the most unique kisses ever shot. Director Sam Raimi said it was so physically uncomfortable for Maguire that he could barely breathe, but the visual paid off—it became a poster moment for superhero romance.

Romeo + Juliet (1996) Baz Luhrmann’s modern take on William Shakespeare’s tragedy delivers a memorable kiss between Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire

, first witnessed at a masked party just before they learn each other’s identities. The dramatic visuals and stylized setting gave new

OLK-POP band Ben&Ben is officially resuming the Philippine leg of their Traveller Across Dimensions tour this August, months after postponing several dates due to drummer Jam Villanueva’s wrist injury.

During the press conference, the band recalled the difficult decision to pause the tour after Jam sustained an injury.

“When Jam was first showing signs of wrist pain, she was really pushing to keep playing. She didn’t want to stop until we could see in her face that she was afraid it might ruin her wrist for the long term,” said Andrew de Pano, who plays percussion in the band.

The group emphasized that their concern was never about the show schedule, but about Jam’s well-being.

“We were really more worried about her health, her longevity with playing, because we know how much Jam embodies her love for drumming and how much it means to her. So it was like, how can we best help Jam? How can she best recover?” he told Manila Standard Entertainment Jam said that she is on her way to recovering and has been doing therapy.

“I’m on the road to recovery. I can move my wrist now, but I’m still working on the strength of it. The goal is to be able to play as soon as I can, in the healthiest way possible,” said Jam.

Despite the setback, the band credits their team and collaborators for making it possible to continue select shows. They also praised their production crew, sound team, and technical staff.

Reflecting on the experience, the group shared how it deepened their bond.

“It became very real to us how precious our bodies are, how important each one of us is. Even if we get different drummers,

they won’t ever play the same way as Jam plays. We’re not invincible, we need to warm up, rest, and take care of ourselves,” Miguel Benjamin shared. On the other hand, the group also announced the renewal of their partnership with Sony Music Philippines, marking a new chapter in their six-year collaboration with the label.

“We took a lot of time to reflect on the future of our music journey. Today, we’re very proud to announce that we are renewing our partnership with Sony Music Philippines,” Miguel continued. Sony Music Philippines general manager Roslyn Pineda called Ben&Ben “one of the biggest artists on our roster,” recounting shared memories that included tours, a John Mayer encounter, and a surprise platinum award in Dubai.

“Their music has infused our country with hope and positivity,” she said.

The band also revealed that a concert film based on Traveller Across Dimensions is in the works, though no release date has been confirmed. They plan to expand the story of the album through stage visuals, social media content, and future performances.

The rescheduled shows will take place on Aug. 16 in Bacolod (University of St. La Salle Coliseum), Aug. 23 in Baguio (John Hay Convention Center), and Aug. 30 in Davao (Holy Cross of Davao College Gymnasium). The group’s next performance is scheduled for July 12 in Lincoln, California, before the tour continues in key cities across the Philippines in August.

movie kissing scenes we can’t forget

energy to a centuries-old love story.

Titanic (1997)

Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose’s (Kate Winslet) kiss at the bow of the ship, set against a blazing sunset and James Horner’s soaring score,

capturing the dizzying feeling of first love—and the calm before the storm. The scene became one of the most replayed and parodied in film history, but the emotion behind it still holds up.

La La Land (2016) Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s kiss during the Griffith Observatory scene took flight—literally. As they floated among the stars, the film blended old Hollywood magic with modern melancholy, showing that not all great love stories end the way we hope.

From superhero blockbusters to modern-day Shakespeare, these kissing scenes remind us why romance in cinema never goes out of style.

Kawaii-themed

comic con gathers local artists, cosplayers, art enthusiasts

FILIPINO comic artists, illustrators, and cosplayers gathered at the DrawINK Convention 2025 to celebrate kawaii culture and diverse artistic expression, organizers said.

The three-day event, hosted by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s (DLS-CSB) premier comic organization DrawINK, spotlighted local talent under the theme Komi’s Confectionery, inspired by Japanese cuteness and bakery sweets. “Komi’s Confectionery encourages artists to embrace individualism,” organizers said, describing the theme as a celebration of identity and self-expression. The convention featured panel discussions with Filipina creators, including illustrator Patricia Ramos, who shared insights on navigating the comic industry, and artist Dione Kong, who discussed building a career in art. Animator Nyoomian previewed their award-winning webtoon The Interpretation of Shadows and emphasized the importance of digital platforms for comic artists.

A cosplay competition highlighted the event, with  Johan Digal  winning top honors for her portrayal of Genshin Impact’s Navia.  Rischa Rodriguez  and  Sarah Reyes  placed as runners-up for their renditions of characters from Black Butler and Tangled, respectively. BOHOL has a new charmer with the upcoming opening of South Palms Resort & Spa Panglao – MGallery Collection on Aug. 8.

Set along a white-sand beachfront less than five kilometers from the Bohol-Panglao International Airport, the new resort brings together island heritage, sustainable design, and coastal hospitality.

surrounding environment.

Guests can enjoy low-impact activities such as reef snorkeling, diving at the nearby planewreck, and guided visits to a working farm located just one kilometer from the resort. The farm experience includes animal feeding, workshops, and interactions with carabaos. Families can join in culturally rooted programs, while wellness seekers can unwind through spa treatments rooted in Filipino traditions. The resort also features four restaurants and bars, a kids’ club, and outdoor spaces for events and weddings.

The resort is surrounded by diverse ecosystems and iconic landscapes that define Bohol, from vibrant coral reefs and a sunken plane wreck to the UNESCO-listed Chocolate Hills and a nearby tarsier conservation sanctuary.  Designed by  Patricia Ho  of White Jacket,  Philip Pond  of Atelier Pond, and  Patrick Keane  of Enter Projects Asia, South Palms Panglao is built using locally sourced materials and indigenous patterns. Visitors enter through an archway of intertwined vines and are welcomed into a banyan tree-shaded lobby. Guestrooms feature handwoven headboards, bamboo and coconut wood details, rattan lighting, and interiors guided by biophilic design.

SAFFRON’S honeyed warmth and the smoldering allure of paprika set the stage at Alma Makati, where Valencia’s own Chef  Luis Martínez  pens edible sonnets. Each dish is a love letter to the Mediterranean. Every bite is a voyage: sunlit, seabreezed, and unmistakably Spanish. Yet he provides subtle local touches. You’ll spot them in the fresh, locally sourced produce. This delicate balance defines Martínez’s culinary ethos—one that has earned him acclaim at both Alma Makati and its tropical sister property, Alma Siargao. Growing up in Valencia, Martínez was immersed in a rich culinary culture where food was more than sustenance—it was a way of life. From an early age, he found inspiration in the aromas wafting from his family’s kitchen, particularly on Sundays when paella simmered over the fire. He witnessed how food could weave people together, fostering joy, connection, and a shared sense of identity. Those lessons stayed with him. Valencia instilled in him a reverence for ingredients, the importance of patience, heart, and tradition—yet also the freedom to innovate. Today, his cooking reflects Mediterranean roots, anchored in seasonality, simplicity, and precise technique. For Martínez, becoming a chef was inevitable: a path to self-expression and a tribute to the place that shaped him. What first drew Martínez to the Philippines

A spiraled Walk Bridge runs through the open-air resort, where the scent of lemongrass from its garden drifts throughout. Every structure is kept low-rise, in respect of local architecture and the

A highlight of the property is the MGallery signature experience, “The Timeless Crystal of Bohol,” which introduces guests to  asin tibuok, a rare sea salt unique to this part of the Philippines. The curated activity gives insight into its traditional, labor-intensive production process—connecting visitors with a centuriesold practice.

“This is more than a destination, it’s a living narrative,” said General Manager  Danish Khan “We offer signature experiences that bring the story of Bohol to every guest journey. We have created a place where local culture comes alive, where nature and luxury exist in harmony, and where guests can create meaningful connections that transform every stay into a personal story.”

An “Elite Access” pre-opening offer is available for bookings from July 4, covering stays between Aug. 8 and Oct. 31. The package includes P3,000 in resort credits, with extra perks for ALL and Accor Plus members.

Reservations may be made via southpalmsmgallery. reservations@accor.com, by calling +63 038 507 0010, or through  Accor’s website.

Bringing coastal comfort to the table

was his passion for travel—the thrill of uncovering new cultures, people, and flavors. But when he arrived eight years ago, something unexpected happened: an instant connection. In the warmth of its people, their generous hospitality, and the reverence for family and tradition, he recognized echoes of his native Valencia. It felt, in ways both intangible and profound, like coming home.

“The Filipino food culture is rich, diverse, and full of heart. It has taught me to cook with more emotion and to value the stories behind each dish. At Alma, this influence is present not just in the way we blend Mediterranean techniques with local ingredients, but in the relationships we’ve built. Working hand in hand with local fishermen, farmers, and producers—knowing exactly where each ingredient comes from—has been essential to shaping the identity of Alma. It’s not just about food, it’s about people, place, and purpose. Being here doesn’t feel foreign—it feels like home,” Martínez shared.

A veterinarian by training, Martínez first wanted to build a hotel, not a restaurant. But when the pandemic left his finished property empty, he returned to his first love—cooking—transforming necessity into a lifeline. This resilience was bred in Valencia, where, as a student, he funded his

travels by selling paellas, living his father’s creed: “If you want something, earn it.”

Dee-tails

Fate tested him again when Typhoon Odette destroyed his Siargao project before it could open, wiping out Alma completely. From this devastation rose Terraza Martínez in Manila, a love letter to Mediterranean flavors that became his proving ground. Here, he refined his vision before resurrecting Alma (“soul” in Spanish), now a testament to heritage rebuilt through perseverance.

Ardee de los Angeles

“Opening in Siargao was one of the most challenging—and rewarding— experiences of my life. Everything was a challenge: the language barrier, adapting to the culture in a remote province, building the restaurant from scratch, the constant power outages, and, of course, my own inexperience in the industry. On top of that, working on a small island meant limited access to ingredients and supplies. Sometimes, just to get fresh

squid, I had to ride a motorbike for over an hour through the jungle to reach a tiny beachside village,” Martínez recalls.

At Alma Siargao and Alma Makati, the essence remains the same: a space to slow down, connect, and savor honest Mediterranean food in a warm, soulful setting. The concept and spirit are shared, but each location carries its own unique charm. In Siargao, Alma sits beachfront, where the ocean’s presence—the sound of waves, the salty breeze—enhances every meal. The menu shifts with the catch of the day, embracing spontaneity and local flavors. Alma in Poblacion, Makati, is an urban retreat— intimate and tucked away from the city’s rush. Though the setting is different, the heart of the experience stays real: a place where good food and meaningful moments bring people together. Separate locations, one mission: to turn meals into memories. Where the Mediterranean soul finds a home, whether amid city lights or ocean tides. Two locations, two hearts, one soul.
