The Quezon City government is leading the way towards a more environmentally responsible celebration as it hosted yesterday the largest Pride festival in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Co-organized by the local government, Pride PH, and the University of the Philippines Diliman, this year’s LoveLaban 3 Pride Festival is committed to sustainability.
Organizers are steering the event away from unnecessary plastics and waste, while promoting a circular economy among participants, vendors, and partners, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said in a statement.
THE Department of Energy will meet with oil firms on Monday to discuss a possible staggered implementation of next week’s major oil price hike, with diesel price increase now seen to hit P5.10 per liter.
Jetti Petroleum president Leo Bellas said the possibility of extending promos and discount offerings of gas stations to help mitigate the impact of the price increase will also be raised during the meeting. Crude futures have soared as the Israel-Iran conflict showed no signs of easing, with investors pricing in the risk of tighter oil supplies that would likely weigh on economic growth.

Vice President Sara Duterte said she is under no obligation to disclose details of her recent personal trip to Australia after the Palace called on her to be more transparent in her travels abroad.

“If you use government funds for your trip, it becomes official business. Then you must report,” the Vice President added.
Earlier, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro urged Duterte to be more transparent in her travels, especially if she has official functions during a private trip.

HE House prosecution panel said it trusts the impeachment process for the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, but it is ready to bring it up to the Supreme Court as a last resort should senator-judges dismiss the case even without a formal hearing.
HE Department of Foreign Affairs on Saturday advised Filipinos in Israel and Iran as well as their relatives here in the Philippines to stay calm and not panic after the agency raised Alert Level 3, paving the way for voluntary repatriation, noting that there have been several “misinformation” posts on social media.
Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Robert Ferrer said: “The ones panicking are the relatives here in the Philippines. They (Filipinos in Israel and Iran) are the ones reassuring their relatives back here.”
“We trust the process of impeachment. We (also) trust that the senator-judges will perform their constitutional duty and abide by their oath,” pros-

“There will be ethical and accountability concerns…They even used the OVP Facebook, which is part of the government, but was used for a personal trip. So, there is confusion and conflict of interest,” she added.
Castro urged Duterte to be more “honest” with the nature of her trips, adding that the Office of the President has always approved the Vice President’s requests for travel authority.
Castro noted that in just less than a month, Duterte went to four countries – the Netherlands, Qatar, Malaysia and Australia.
Under Alert Level 3, “all overseas Filipinos in Israel and Iran are enjoined to return to the Philippines.”
BUCOY: WE TRUST SENATOR-JUDGES, BUT SC A LAST RESORT
The DFA said the majority of around 1,200 Filipinos living and working in Iran are married to Iranian citizens while only over a dozen are workers. Nine have so far requested to be repatriated.
ecution panel spokesperson Antonio Bucoy said.
“If we do not trust the process, there will be chaos. We are a democracy. We are governed by rules. We are governed by law. That is why the law is there – for order. That is why the rule of law is primordial,” he added.
Senate President Francis Escudero earlier said the impeachment court may vote on the case even without hearing evidence.
Asked if it is possible for the impeachment case to be dismissed without going through a formal trial, Escudero said: “Everything is possible.” Bucoy, a lawyer by profession, admitted that the House prosecutors cannot stop the senator-judges from doing so.
“Travel by Filipinos to both these countries is highly discouraged, due to the ongoing crisis and the actual closure of their air space and seaports,” the DFA said in its advisory.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose De Vega added that all Filipino diplomats at the Philippine Embassy in Tehran will stay in Iran to continue monitoring and assisting the situation.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he is focused on attending to the needs of the country and the Filipino people and has no intention to intervene in how Congress handles the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. In the latest episode of his podcast aired on Saturday, Mr. Marcos responded to a comment that the President has a “say” on whatever the decision would be on Duterte’s impeachment case.
In such a scenario, he said the matter may be raised to the Supreme Court.
“We are considering all the possible safe border exits from Iran. Tehran is now almost like a ghost town and many have left, including Filipinos,” Ferrer said.
There are over 30,000 Filipinos in Israel, of which at least 191 have requested to be repatriated.
De Vega said the first 26 repatriates from Israel are scheduled to return to the Philippines next week.
Meanwhile, Bucoy dismissed as absurd the claim by the Vice President’s camp that the absence of a written contract undermines the charge of ordering assassinations, noting that such acts are illegal by nature and are never formalized through documents.
“The contracting of a murderer, you don’t write that. That is not written as ‘I agree to kill.’ There is no such thing because it is illegal,” he said.
Israel’s war with Iran rages for a second week, with Israel’s military saying on Saturday it killed three Iranian commanders and struck Iran’s Isfahan nuclear site for a second time.
“So what contract are we talking about? A notarized contract?” he added.

In the latest episode of his podcast aired on Saturday, Mr. Marcos said giving Filipinos a more comfortable life is the legacy he wants to leave behind when his term ends in 2028.
“We’ve made a change for the better. This has been my guide in all the positions I’ve taken,” he said.

CHINESE COAST GUARD FIRES WATER CANNON AT CIVILIANS

ACHINESE Coast Guard (CCG) vessel harassed and fired water cannons at Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ships manned by Filipino fishermen near Panatag Shoal on Friday, according to Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela.
In a statement, Tarriela said the incident happened around 10 a.m. on June 20 as four BFAR vessels
— BRP Datu Tamblot, BRP Datu Taradapit, BRP Datu Bankaya, and BRP Datu Daya — were delivering
fuel subsidies to local fishermen. “BRP Datu Taradapit faced aggressive maneuvers from Chinese Coast Guard vessel CCG-4203, which came within 600 yards and fired a water cannon 15.6 nautical miles southwest of Panatag Shoal,” Tarriela said.
Despite hostile actions, including blocking maneuvers and a direct water cannon hit on the port quarter of the BRP Datu Taradapit, the vessel was able to evade further damage. Later, at 10:30 a.m., CCG-3105 fired a water cannon at BRP Datu Tamblot from 18.1 nautical miles southeast of the shoal, though the attack missed. Six China Coast Guard ships, two
People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) warships, and several maritime militia vessels were spotted in the area, which Tarriela said aimed to disrupt BFAR’s humanitarian mission.
“All BFAR operations took place within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” he added. “Filipino fishermen have sovereign rights in these waters, as upheld by the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, UNCLOS, and the 2016 Arbitral Award.”
Panatag Shoal (also known as Bajo de Masinloc) lies 124 nautical miles from Zambales and is well within the 200-nautical mile EEZ granted under international law.

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has reminded the public that selling, repacking, and unauthorized distribution of ready-to-eat food (RTEF) boxes and other relief items provided during disaster response operations are strictly prohibited under Republic Act 10121, or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.

TUGUEGARAO CITY—More than 2,000 job opportunities were offered during a three-day job fair held at SM City Tuguegarao from June 18 to 20, with 153 applicants hired on the spot, officials reported.
The event was organized by the provincial government of Cagayan and partner agencies as part of the 442nd Aggao Nac Cagayan celebrations.
The Philippines has formally endorsed Filipino names for 131 previously unnamed reefs, sandbars, and other maritime features in the West Philippine Sea, particularly within the contested Kalayaan Island Group.
Special Assistant to the Secretary Leo Quintilla, who is also Officerin-Charge of the DSWD National Resource and Logistics Management Bureau (NRLMB), said covering or removing the official DSWD label or distributing the items to people who are not eligible are violations of the law.
The job fair was led by the Public Employment Services Office (PESO), with 92 applicants hired on the spot on the first day and another 61 later in the same period.
The event also featured a business-one-stop-shop (BOSS) to assist jobseekers and entrepreneurs with key services.
“These are distributed free of charge by the DSWD or through local government units to ensure that basic needs are met in times of crisis,” Quintilla said. Maricel V. Cruz

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that outgoing Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo signed National Maritime Council (NMC) Resolution No. 002, which puts forward a standardized list of Philippine names for features located in the Spratly archipelago—an area long subject to overlapping claims, most notably from China.
The move is part of a broader national effort to reinforce the country’s presence and administrative control over maritime territories amid continued incursions and aggressive activity by foreign vessels.
“This is a clear step in affirming our sovereign rights,” the DFA said in a statement, noting that the standardized naming
The practice of naming features in the Kalayaan Island Group began in 2020 when the local government of Kalayaan, Palawan, named six maritime features—Pag-asa Cay 1 to 4 and Pag-asa Reef 1 and 2—after Pag-asa Island, the remote township that serves as the administrative hub of the Philippine-claimed portion of the Spratlys.
The latest naming initiative was developed by the National Maritime Council, a multiagency body created in 2024 through Executive Order No. 57 issued by President Ferdinand
The council is led by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin and includes top officials from the Departments of National Defense, Agriculture, Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, the DFA, and the Office of the National Security Adviser. With this move, the government seeks to solidify its hold over vital maritime zones while also standardizing the language used in official maps, documents, and international engagements—a symbolic and practical step in defending Philippine interests in one of the world’s most contested maritime regions.

BI AGENTS NAB PAKISTANI
ILLEGALLY STAYING IN PH
THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) has expressed concern over the use of authentic Philippine documents by undocumented foreign nationals after arresting a Chinese national who falsely identified himself as Filipino.
PAGADIAN CITY—The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested a Pakistani national for illegally staying in the Philippines, following intelligence reports about his unauthorized presence in Barangay Tiguma, Pagadian City.
The BI apprehended Wu Zhishi along J. Pimentel Street, Barangay V in Daet, Camarines Norte, in coordination with government intelligence operatives, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Presidential AntiOrganized Crime Commission.
Sajjad Khan, 31, was apprehended on June 16 through a mission order from Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado. The BI said Khan had been banned from reentering the Philippines since 2016.
“This poses a risk to national security as these aliens embed themselves in society, potentially engaging in illegal activities while using someone else’s identity,” BI Chief Joel Anthony Viado said. He urged government agencies to tighten safeguards in issuing IDs to ensure only legitimate Filipinos can obtain them.
Khan later admitted to entering the country illegally by boat—a method often referred to as the “backdoor.” He was found to have violated Section 37(a)(1) of the Philippine Immigration Act for illegal entry and being undocumented.
Wu was reportedly using illegally acquired government-issued documents to claim Filipino identity in various dealings, including securing a firearm license. He presented an expired retiree’s visa card and denied the use of a fake identity. Vito Barcelo
COMELEC SETS TALKS ON 2ND PLACER RULE
GOV’T CRACKS DOWN ON TAXI DRIVERS AT AIRPORT
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday said it will meet with the Office of the Solicitor General to discuss the Supreme Court’s decision abandoning the “second placer” doctrine in election disputes.
The Supreme Court ruled that even if the candidate with the highest votes is disqualified or their candidacy is canceled, the runner-up will not automatically be declared the winner, and the rule of succession will apply instead.

PRESIDEN t Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has officially accepted the resignation of Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann and appointed veteran sports executive Patrick “Pato” Gregorio as his replacement, Malacañang said Saturday.
The partnership reflects the Marcos administration’s push to modernize the country’s technology and infrastructure amid intensifying climate challenges.
In a message to Palace reporters, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the changes at the helm of the PSC as part of President Marcos’ call for courtesy resignations from members of his Cabinet and appointees as part of a “revamp” of his administration.
“Yes, that’s right,” Bersamin said, confirming Gregorio’s appointment. Though the PSC is not a Cabinetlevel agency, its chairman is a presidential appointee.

THE Philippine government has successfully repatriated another group of Filipino workers affected by the conflict between Iran and Israel.
The six returnees arrived safely at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 early Saturday morning on Emirates flight EK 334.
The group was warmly welcomed by Patricia Yvonne Caunan, the Administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA); Eduardo De Vega, the Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs; Venecio Legaspi, the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers; along with a medical team and a social welfare officer from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The group includes five overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were employed as shrimp hatchery technicians in Iran and one domestic worker based in Dubai, who accompanied her employer to Iran as a tourist.
This repatriation was made possible through the efforts of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, led by Ambassador Roberto Manalo, in close coordination with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and OWWA.
Upon arrival, the workers received financial assistance from the DMW, OWWA, and DSWD. They were also provided with food and medical services by the MIA Medical Team.
M‘METH’ SEIZURES HIT RECORD 236 TONS IN 2024
ETHAMPHETAMINE seizures across East Asia surged to 236 tons last year, a 24% jump from 2023, with the bulk of the interceptions occurring in Southeast Asia, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Thailand alone seized about 130 tons in 2024, becoming the first country in the region to confiscate over 100 tons of methamphetamine within a single year.
Most of the meth originated in the “Golden Triangle,” a remote region straddling the jungle borders
of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos.
“The 236 tons represent only the amount seized; much more methamphetamine is actually reaching the market,” said Benedikt Hofmann, UNODC’s acting regional representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
“While these seizures reflect, in part, successful law enforcement efforts, we are clearly seeing unprecedented levels of methamphetamine production and trafficking from the Golden Triangle, in particular Shan State,” he added.
On June 17, Indonesia’s National Drug Agency announced its largest-ever seizure: two tons of methamphetamine intercepted after a five-month operation tracking shipments from the Golden Triangle.
Joshua Kurlantzick, senior fellow for Southeast Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations, told DW there have been major crack-
downs across the region―with the exception of Myanmar, where civil war has persisted since 2021. Although Myanmar has long been a hub for the region’s narcotics trade, the military junta and its proxies, who seized power in 2021 after toppling the country’s elected government, have been accused of moving into the drug business to finance their military campaigns.
Zachary Abuza, a professor at the National War College in Washington, noted that while seizures rose nearly 25 percent, street prices in many countries have remained stable or even declined—signaling a dramatic rise in supply.
HUNGER AMONG FILIPINOS RISES SLIGHTLY
A SOCIAL Weather Stations (SWS) survey revealed that Filipino families who experienced involuntary hunger rose slightly to 20 percent toward the end of April 2025. The first quarter survey-- conducted from April 23 to 28--defines involuntary hunger as “being hungry and not having anything to eat at least once in the past three months.” This figure is up from 19.1
percent recorded in mid-April, following a steep 8.1-point drop from 27.2 percent in March.
SWS said the 20 percent overall hunger rate combines 16.4 percent who experienced “moderate hunger”—hunger only once or a few times in three months—and 3.6 percent who experienced “severe hunger,” meaning they went hungry often or always. Regionally, hunger was high-
est in Mindanao at 26.3 percent, followed by Metro Manila at 20.3 percent, the Visayas at 19.7 percent, and Balance Luzon at 17 percent, the survey said. Compared to mid-April, incidence dropped by 5.7 points in Metro Manila and by 3.5 points in Balance Luzon but increased by 9 points in Mindanao and 5.4 points in the Visayas. The same survey also found
that 50 percent of families nationwide consider themselves poor, while 8 percent rated themselves on the borderline between poor and not poor, and 42 percent identified as not poor. Self-rated food poverty stood at 41 percent, with 7 percent at the borderline and 51 percent saying they are not food-poor. SWS noted that hunger remains highest among food-poor families.
JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES TO HOLD ‘PURE WORSHIP!’
JEHOVAH’S Witnesses will return to Pasay City this weekend to hold their annual global convention series themed “Pure Worship!” at the SMX Convention Center. The free three-day program will run across two weekends starting June 27 and is expected to attract more than 17,500 attendees. The event will feature Bible-based videos, discourses, and interviews exploring the life of Jesus Christ, including how he overcame temptation, performed his first miracle, and demonstrated love and compassion.
Spokesman James Morales said Saturday’s highlight will be the baptism of local candidates, along with the screening of Episode 2 of “The Good News According to Jesus,” an 18-part video series about Jesus’ ministry. Last year, nearly 11 million people attended more than 6,000 conventions organized by Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide. Organizers said the Pasay gathering will also help boost the local economy by bringing thousands of visitors to the city. The Witnesses, one of the largest nonprofit convention organizers globally, said the event is open to all and aims to strengthen faith and community spirit.

‘GIANT’ WIN ON POWERS OF JUDGES
WASHINGTON—US President
Donald Trump hailed a “giant win” Friday (Saturday, Manila time) after the Supreme Court curbed lone judges from blocking the Republican’s raft of controversial policies.
The 6-3 ruling, with the court’s liberal justices all dissenting, stemmed from Trump’s bid to end birthright citizenship.
The court said individual district judges had likely exceeded their powers by issuing nationwide injunctions, which have also blocked a string of Trump’s hardline policies on immigration, diversity and firing federal employees.
“The Supreme Court has delivered a monumen tal victory for the Constitution, the separation of powers and the rule of law,” 79-year-old Trump told a hastily arranged press conference at the Trump said he would now proceed with “so

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump voiced optimism Friday (Saturday, Manila time) about a new ceasefire in Gaza, as criticism grew over mounting civilian deaths at Israeli-backed food distribution centers in the territory.
Asked by reporters how close a ceasefire was between Israel and Hamas, Trump said: “We think within the next week, we’re going to get a ceasefire.”
The United States brokered a ceasefire in the devastating conflict in the waning days of former president Joe Biden’s administration, with support from Trump’s incoming team.
Israel broke the ceasefire in March, launching new devastating attacks on Hamas, which attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
Israel also stopped all food and other supplies from entering Gaza for more than two months, drawing warnings of famine.
Israel has since allowed a resumption of food through the controversial USand Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which involves US security contractors with Israeli troops at the periphery.
United Nations officials on Friday said the GHF system was leading to mass killings of people seeking aid, drawing accusations from Israel that the UN was “aligning itself with Hamas.”
Eyewitnesses and local officials have reported repeated killings of Palestinians at distribution centers over recent weeks in the war-stricken territory, where Israeli forces are battling Hamas militants.
The Israeli military has denied targeting people and GHF has denied any deadly incidents were linked to its sites.
But following weeks of reports, UN officials and other aid providers on Friday denounced what they said was a wave of killings of hungry people seeking aid.
“The new aid distribution system has become a killing field,” with people “shot at while trying to access food for themselves and their families,” said Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian affairs (UNWRA).
“This abomination must end through a return to humanitarian deliveries from the UN including @UNRWA,” he wrote on X.
The health ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory says that since late May, more than 500 people have been killed near aid centers while seeking scarce supplies.
The country’s civil defense agency has also repeatedly reported people being killed while seeking aid.
“People are being killed simply trying to feed themselves and their families,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
“The search for food must never be a death sentence.”
Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) branded the GHF relief effort
“slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid.”

IRAN HOLDS STATE FUNERAL FOR TOP BRASS SLAIN IN WAR WITH IRAEL
TEHRAN – Iran began a state funeral service Saturday for around 60 people, including its military commanders, killed in its war with Israel, after Tehran’s top diplomat condemned Donald Trump’s comments on supreme leader Ali Khamenei as “unacceptable.”
The proceedings started at 8:00 am local time (0430 GMT) in the capital Tehran as government offices and many businesses were closed on Saturday for the occasion.
“The ceremony to honor the martyrs has officially started,” state TV said, showing footage of people donning black clothes, waving Iranian flags and holding pictures of the slain military commanders. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as well as other senior government officials also attended the event.
Images showed coffins draped in Iranian flags and bearing portraits of the deceased commanders in uniform near Enghelab Square in central Tehran.
The United States had carried out strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites last weekend, joining its ally Israel’s bombardments of Iran’s nuclear program in the 12-day conflict launched on June 13.
Both Israel and Iran claimed victory in the war that ended with a ceasefire, with Iranian leader Khamenei downplaying the US strikes as having done “nothing significant.”
In a tirade on his Truth Social platform, Trump blasted Tehran Friday for claiming to have won the war. He also claimed to have known “EXACTLY where he (Khamenei) was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the U.S. Armed Forces... terminate his life.” AFP
BY DAY, Lester Mardoquio and Laarni Regis serve patients in Kuwait’s dental clinics - he as a dental assistant, she as a dental nurse.
Outside their day jobs, the couple runs Carpet Studio—a budding interiors brand that’s quickly gaining traction among Filipino homeowners and design professionals back home.
Even while based overseas, Lester and Laarni manage a growing startup that now serves clients in Davao, Marikina, and even some of Metro Manila’s upscale neighborhoods.
The key? Seamless coordination, mutual trust, and an unshakable commitment to family and long-term goals.
Fashion interiors
Carpet Studio was officially registered in March 2024, but the groundwork began months earlier. With only P100,000 in pooled capital—money saved from leasing out their apartment in Manila—the couple began sourcing stylish yet affordable carpets from China, targeting middleincome Filipino families.
By September, they secured a space at Fashion Interiors, a well-known furniture and posh design showroom that gave their brand valuable exposure to interior designers, architects, and high-end homeowners.
“Just being there gave us instant credibility. Interior designers started reaching out,” Laarni recalled. Global taste
In Kuwait, carpets are a part of daily life—brought to picnics, used in prayer, or simply for family lounging. It’s common for households to purchase four to five carpets a year.
“We thought, why not bring that practical, cultural appreciation here?” said Lester.
The couple began by importing “zeropile” carpets from China, known for trendy designs and affordability. But they soon diversified into premium Turkish carpets, both machine-made and handwoven, admired for their plush feel, durability, and traditional artistry.
Carpet Studio focuses on two core segments: budget-friendly Chinese carpets priced as low as P2,500, and high-end Turkish carpets - machine-made and handwoven - sought after for their plush texture and timeless designs.
“There’s a story behind every Turkish carpet. They’re like the Hermès of floor coverings - timeless, expressive, and made with craftsmanship,” Laarni quipped.
A third segment, mid-tier offerings suited for mall retail, is already in the pipeline as the couple eyes expansion into B market spaces soon.
The couple admitted that managing a growing business from abroad isn’t easy. The two rely on tight coordination, online marketing, and a small network of local contacts who help with logistics and showroom visits.
OFW COUPLE BUILDS A CARPET EMPIRE
“Our setup depends on checks and balances. If one of us doesn’t agree, we don’t proceed. That rule keeps us in sync,” said Laarni, noting how they occasionally clash, especially with differing opinions on design or pricing.
“It’s better to challenge each other than to make costly mistakes,” Lester said. Making waves
To their surprise, inquiries began pouring in from clients in Forbes Park and high-end residential enclaves, proof that their carpets, especially the Turkish ones, were resonating beyond the middle market.
They’ve since worked with interior designers and styling firms who include Carpet Studio in curated selections for clients.
“The goal is to become a full-range outfitter. Hotels, condos, homes - if you need a carpet, we want to be your go-to,” Lester said.
There were times, both recalled, that they’ve even had to politely turn down some clients’ requests, like cutting large Turkish rugs to fit smaller spaces, if it compromises the product.
“We protect the integrity of the brand. Even if clients are willing to pay more, we won’t alter a P90,000 rug if it ruins the design,” Laarni said.
While Carpet Studio has come far in under a year, the couple knows they’re still
at the beginning of a longer journey. They’re learning the ropes of luxury retail, logistics, and supply chain management—all while maintaining full-time jobs overseas.
Their business philosophy is grounded in what a mentor once told them, “expect failure 70 percent of the time, and success 30 percent, so you don’t get discouraged too easily.”
Family-centered Lester, 39, is originally from Antipolo and has been working in Kuwait for the past seven years. Laarni, 37, hails from Marikina and has built her career there over the last 12 years.
The couple takes turns flying home every six months, staying for a month at a time to personally manage operations and spend time with their children.
MANG Inasal, the Philippines’ Grill Expert, has launched its nationwide Pork BBQ Caravan to bring its iconic grilled flavor to more communities across the country.
The caravan kicked off at Ayala Malls Circuit Makati, marking the start of the brand’s IhawSarap season this June.
“Our Pork BBQ Caravan is our way of bringing the Ihaw-Sarap experience closer to more Filipinos,” said Mang Inasal president Mike V. Castro.
“We want more people to discover why our Pork BBQ is fast becoming a new favorite and why it’s perfect for every celebration,” he added. The caravan will visit key locations nationwide, offering free samples of Mang Inasal’s juicylambot Pork BBQ to showcase why it’s one of the brand’s most popular offerings.
“We’re still OFWs, still employed full-time. But this business is our future. It’s our way of preparing for something bigger while staying connected to home,” Lester said.
Though still very much in the hustle phase, Lester and Laarni see Carpet Studio as their eventual exit plan from life abroad. They dream of running it full-time from the Philippines - spending more time with their children while continuing to serve a growing, style-conscious market. Othel V. Campos

His perfect score edged out second seed Zeus Mael Bernil, who finished with four points. Stefhen Anchita, Phil Rholand Templonuevo, Chezy Sage Knyckxon Tee, and Mikhail Paul Nathan Leyco tied for third to sixth places with 3.5 points each.
“I am very happy and super grateful to the Lord because He gave me this victory,”

A former baseball player turned elite softball coach, Figueroa brings a deep passion for developing women’s softball. Earlier this year, he led a two-day clinic at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium with fellow coach Skylynne Ellazar, training over 100 athletes and 45 coaches. The clinic emphasized not only drills but also mental fortitude, technical proficiency, and character development.
“The first thing every young athlete needs is to fall in love with the game,” Figueroa said. “Once that happens, everything else becomes a product of discipline.” His coaching philosophy emphasizes strong technical foundations—solid base running, clean execution, and relentless practice—but also underscores the importance of mindset.
“There needs to be a standard for every player who puts on this jersey. Representing the Philippines is a privilege, and that privilege should fuel your drive.” Figueroa recognizes the immense raw talent of the Blu Girls. His mission is to amplify their skills with an unshakable belief that they can conquer the world stage.

EXAMINING DAIRY'S ROLE IN CANINE AND FELINE NUTRITION
By Mariana Burgos
THE human love affair with dairy is well-documented, with ice cream, cheese, and yogurt often gracing our tables. But what about our furry companions? Are these creamy treats safe and beneficial for cats and dogs, or are they potential sources of digestive distress?
The Lactose Factor: Understanding Lactose Intolerance
At the heart of the matter lies lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. As mentioned in the article, "The Truth About Dairy Products and Pets," by PetMD, many animals, including cats and dogs, lack sufficient levels of lactase, the enzyme required to break down lactose. This deficiency can lead to lactose intolerance, a condition where undigested lactose ferments in the gut, causing a range of unpleasant symptoms.
The adverse effects of lactose intolerance in pets are varied and can significantly impact their well-being. The common symptoms include:
• Diarrhea: This is the most frequently observed sign, resulting from the undigested lactose drawing water into the intestines, leading to loose and watery stools.
• Vomiting: Gastrointestinal upset often triggers vomiting, causing distress.
• Gas and Bloating: Fermentation of the undigested lactose produces gas, leading to discomfort and abdominal distension.
• Abdominal Pain: Cramping and general discomfort in the abdominal region are also common signs of lactose intolerance, indicating the pet's distress.
The severity of these symptoms varies depending on the amount of dairy consumed and the individual animal's level of lactase production. Some pets may tolerate small amounts of dairy without issue, while others are highly sensitive.
Cats and Dairy: A Feline Perspective
Cats, in particular, are often portrayed alongside a bowl of milk. However, as noted in the article "Can Cats Eat Ice Cream?" by Kinship, most adult cats are lactose intolerant. While kittens possess lactase to digest their mother's milk, this enzyme production
typically declines as they mature.
Therefore, offering a cat ice cream, milk or any dairy product, can be risky. The high sugar content in many ice creams further exacerbates the potential for digestive upset and can contribute to weight gain. Furthermore, some ice cream flavors contain ingredients toxic to cats, such as chocolate.
The article "Can Cats Eat Ice Cream?" by Kinship, suggests that if a cat is given dairy products, it should be in small amounts, and the owner should monitor for any signs of digestive distress.
Dogs and Dairy: Navigating the Canine Diet
Dogs, like cats, can also experience lactose intolerance. The article "Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?" The American Kennel Club (AKC) highlights that while a small amount of plain ice cream might not cause problems for some dogs, it is generally best to avoid it. The sugar and fat content in ice cream can contribute to weight gain and potentially lead to more severe health issues over time, such as pancreatitis.
The AKC article emphasizes that dogs with existing health conditions, such as diabetes or those prone to pancreatitis, should never be given ice cream. Additionally, certain ice cream flavors contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs, such as chocolate, coffee, and macadamia nuts.
Alternatives and Considerations
Given the potential risks associated with dairy consumption, what are the alternatives?
• Pet-Specific Treats: Numerous commercially available treats are formulated specifically for cats and dogs. These treats often contain ingredients that are easily digestible and tailored to their nutritional needs.
• Plain Yogurt (in moderation): Some dogs can tolerate small amounts of plain, unsweetened yogurt, which contains probiotics that can be beneficial for gut health. However, it is crucial to monitor for any signs
of digestive upset.
• Water: The most important beverage for both cats and dogs is always fresh, clean water.
Making Informed Decisions
When deciding whether to offer dairy products to your pet, several factors should be considered:
• Individual Tolerance: Observe your pet for any signs of digestive distress after consuming dairy.
• Quantity: If you choose to offer dairy, start with a very small amount and monitor your pet's reaction.
• Ingredient List: Carefully review the ingredient list of any dairy product, avoiding those with added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or potentially toxic ingredients.
• Consult Your Veterinarian: If you have any concerns about your pet's diet, consult with your veterinarian. They can provide personalized advice based on your pet's individual needs and health status.
While the image of a cat lapping up milk or a dog enjoying an ice cream cone may be endearing, the reality is that dairy products can pose risks to the health of many pets. Lactose intolerance, high sugar content, and the potential for poisoning due to toxic ingredients make dairy a less-than-ideal treat for most cats and dogs. By understanding the potential dangers and exploring safer alternatives, pet owners can ensure their furry companions enjoy a healthy and happy life. Ultimately, the best approach is to prioritize a balanced diet specifically formulated for your pet's species and life stage, supplemented with safe and appropriate treats.

The first step in managing spraying is a visit to the veterinarian. A thorough examination is essential to rule out any medical causes. If a medical condition is identified, treating it will be the primary focus.
Environmental Modifications Making changes to the cat's environment can help reduce stress and anxiety.
• Provide a Safe and Secure Environment: Ensure the cat has access to a safe space where it feels secure, such as a quiet room or a cozy bed.
• Enrichment: Provide plenty of environmental enrichment, such as scratching posts, toys, and interactive play to reduce boredom and stress.
• Clean Thoroughly: Clean all sprayed areas thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner designed to remove urine odors. Standard cleaners may not eliminate the scent completely, and the cat may be tempted to respray the same area.
· Reduce Stressors: Identify and minimize any stressors in the cat's environment. This might involve limiting access to windows if other cats are visible outside, providing separate resources (food bowls, water bowls, litter boxes, and beds) for each cat in a multi-cat household, or creating a more stable routine.
Behavioral Modification
Behavioral modification techniques can be helpful in addressing the underlying causes of spraying.
• Feliway: Feliway is a synthetic feline facial pheromone that can help reduce stress and anxiety. It can be diffused in the home or sprayed on areas where the cat has sprayed.
• Positive Reinforcement: Reward the cat for using the litter box. Avoid punishment, as this can increase stress and worsen the problem.
• Identify and Address Triggers: Try to identify the specific triggers that cause the cat to spray. For example, if the cat sprays
when it sees a neighborhood cat outside, you can block the cat's view of the outside.
Litter Box Management
Proper litter box management is crucial.
• Number of Litter Boxes: Provide one litter box per cat, plus one extra.
• Cleaning: Scoop the litter box daily and clean it thoroughly at least once a month.
• Litter Type: Experiment with different types of litter to find one the cat prefers.
Medication (in some cases)
In some cases, a veterinarian may prescribe medication to help manage anxiety or other underlying conditions contributing to spraying.
Early Intervention
Preventing spraying is often easier than treating it. Spaying or neutering cats at a young age is highly recommended. Managing cat spraying can be a challenging process, but it is often possible to reduce or eliminate the behavior with a combination of veterinary care, environmental modifications, and behavioral interventions.

FOR Filipinos, mealtime is more than just eating—it is a time to connect and celebrate with family and friends. Whether it is local dishes or international cuisine, there is always joy around the dining table.
But behind every meal is often a mom carrying the weight of preparation. For many, the daily task of cooking can start to feel repetitive and draining.
Meal planning has long been a challenge for moms. It’s not the preparation—it’s the constant pressure to decide what to cook. This often leads to repetitive dishes that may no longer excite the family.
When you are cooking the same meals day after day, the routine can feel uninspiring. Moms often worry that the lack of variety in meals may affect how much their families enjoy mealtime. So, how can moms keep mealtimes meaningful and full of love when cooking starts to feel mundane or routine?
The answer? Elevate your recipes with a fla-

Lvorful, comforting twist!
Many moms find that adding cheese is an easy way to bring richness and excitement to meals. It’s a simple touch that adds flavor, depth, and heart.
Cheese is versatile, too. A dash of cheese makes fried dishes such as Relyenong Bangus taste even better. Regional dishes such as Ginagmay, and creative spins on favorites like Sisig Lumpia can be elevated too—with cheese, of course.
Eden Cheese, a beloved brand across Filipino households for generations, helps moms make any mealtime moment better.
Creamy and malinamnam, Eden Cheese is made with milk and real cheese, and fortified with essential vitamins such as Vitamin A, B2, and D, Calcium, and Zinc.
It’s the reliable kitchen partner that helps everyday meals taste extra special.
Even celebrity chefs agree.
“Make mealtime moments with your family Eden better!” said Judy Ann Santos in a recent social media post, where she
featured a special Chicken Afritada recipe using Eden Cheese as “one key ingredient.”
Shaha M, meanwhile, proves that cheese works well with international cuisine as well, sharing a Filipino Middle-Eastern-inspired Spring Roll recipe that the trusted cheese brand made “Eden better.”
Between June 3 and 6, Navarra and Siy hosted eight sold-out sessions of Baken 1104, a multilevel tasting experience featuring the all-bacon snack brand and named after the postal code of its first address.
The immersive four-hands dinner was equal parts a nod to Baken's roots and a celebration of its fearless drive to innovate.
It was only right that the versatility of bacon was explored and elevated in street-food inspired bites, a kamayan-style feast, and a playful dessert playground — all brought to life by Baken's lineup of products.
Around 240 guests in total, including renowned chefs, hotel general managers, top media outlets, and key opinion leaders, got to enjoy the tasting trail consisting of the Prologue, Hero, Feast, Private Room, and Send-Off.
Such dishes drew inspiration from the rich flavors of Filipino classics, signature dishes of

And in a Mexican-inspired twist, Erwan Heussaff used Eden Cheese in his Chicken Enchiladas to bring in that familiar, comforting flavor. “We all grew up eating Eden Cheese, and it’s a great way to add flavor to any dish—and give you that extra love and comfort you need,” he shared.

A Cocktail Bar also concocted a Lambanog Slushie with coconut, mango, and Baken
The Feast, which served as the belly of the tasting trail, was the most satiating as it was a Kamayan-style dinner with Baken's full range and local cocktails portioned into four drops.
The First Drop served a strong first impression consisting of Kueh Pie Tie, Kesong Puti, Bacon Jam; Fried Oysters, Real Bacon Crisps, Keso; and Baconsilog.
Then the Second Drop followed up with a filling Pandan Rice Steamed in Banana Leaf, Artisanal Dried Fish and Real Bacon Crisps, Homemade Suka with Smoked Bacon Fat, and Buko Cocktail.
A successive Third Drop succeeded in satisfying any remaining craving the crowd might have had. It features the likes of Tuna, Inihaw na Real Bacon Crisps, Calamansi; Crab Relleno, Bacon Jam, Pansit-pansitan; Fried Bisugo, Pickled Wild Garlic, Bacon Jam Chili Garlic; Halabos na Hipon sa Smoked Bacon Stock; Ensaladang Labanos; and Grilled Squid in Etag and Bacon Patis.
However, no feast would be complete without Lechon and a selection of red and white wines, which the Final Drop finally dropped.
From there, the table's concern was how to make room for dessert, which was covered by the remaining Private Room that hid interactive bacon dessert stations starring Assorted Kakanin, Polvoron, Halo-Halo, and Buko Cocktail.
Baken 1104 ended on a sweet note with the Send-Off, a thoughtful "pabaon" from Baken x Panaderia Toyo consisting of Tsokolate Bicho.

These were the exact words that former housemate Shuvee Etrata uttered to describe actor Donny Pangilinan when he entered the Pinoy Big Brother house as a guest earlier this year. But for many viewers, the line seemed to take on new meaning weeks later when another man,

IT’S not always easy for men to talk about what’s going on inside. The pressure to be strong, to “man up,” or to just shake things off can make it hard to open up. But sometimes, a song can say what words can’t.
This Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re turning to OPM tracks that offer comfort, clarity, and quiet strength. All sung by male artists, these songs don’t just hit but they speak to the emotional battles many men silently carry. Whether you’re grieving, overwhelmed,
SHUVEE ETRATA’S TDH IRL: MEET FIL-AM MODEL ANTHONY CONSTANTINO
Anthony Constantino, was seen waiting outside the house to welcome Shuvee after her
With flowers in hand, the Filipino-American model embraced her which quickly went viral. Not long after, Shuvee confirmed in an interview with GMA News that Anthony is currently courting her even before she went inside the iconic house—drawing public attention and curiosity about the man now seen as her real-life “TDH.”
Anthony Delos Reyes Constantino, 23, may be a fresh face in local entertainment, but his rise has been swift. A model and recent acting newcomer, he first caught attention online through a brief role in Esnyr Ranollo’s High School Hell Week
degrees in Computer Information Systems and Marketing. Initially headed for a tech career, Anthony shifted direction after finding success in modeling. He began part-time in 2022, eventually signing with Otto Models in Los Angeles. His breakout moment came in 2024 when he was chosen as one of the official models for the Philippine Olympic uniforms for the Paris Games.
Alongside his showbiz pursuits, the model remains focused on reconnecting with his roots. He’s made regular visits to the Philippines, and learning to speak Tagalog has become a personal goal.
. The buzz around his appearance led to his signing with Sparkle GMA Artist Center
YouTube series Moments earlier this year.
Born and raised in California, Anthony grew up between Los Angeles and Maui, where his parents ran a Filipino food truck. Though American by birth, he was raised closely within Filipino traditions like karaoke with his grandparents, big family gatherings, and a deep sense of cultural pride that has only grown stronger in recent years.
He graduated from California Lutheran University in 2024 with
WHEN WORDS FAIL: FIVE OPM SONGS THAT LET MEN FEEL THEIR FEELINGS
or trying to hold it together, these five songs understand—and they don’t ask you to explain.
“Bawat Daan” by Ebe Dancel
This heartfelt ballad is gentle, almost like a whisper of reassurance. The lyrics speak to those who feel uncertain about their path, offering comfort in knowing that love and understanding can still find them. Even in doubt, you’re never truly alone.
“Heaven Knows (The Angel Has Flown)” by Orange & Lemons
With its stripped-down sound and soft vocals, this track captures quiet grief in its purest form. It tells the story of someone trying to stay composed while mourning a deep loss. The sadness is subtle but heavy—like the kind many men carry silently.
“Multo” by Cup of Joe
“Multo” puts into words the invisible weight of anxiety. It’s about feeling haunted by thoughts that won’t go away, even when everything on the outside looks fine. The song resonates with anyone who’s struggled to name what they’re feeling.
by
Told through the voice of a friend left
this song reveals the quiet tragedy of someone who seemed okay but was silently struggling. It hits hard because it’s real—highlighting how easy it is to miss what someone’s going through,
Off-camera, he maintains an active lifestyle centered on basketball, fitness, and the beach, all occasionally seen on his social media. But it’s his quiet courtship of Shuvee that’s captured the most attention. Even before the PBB reunion clip surfaced, fans had noted his steady presence in Shuvee’s online space through supportive comments and interactions. A resurfaced beach video of Shuvee being carried bridal-style by a tall, moreno companion only added fuel to the speculation.
As his journey in Philippine showbiz begins to unfold, Anthony is steadily making a name for himself—not just as a model or actor, but as the man quietly living up to the title of Shuvee’s “TDH.”
and how regret often comes too late.
“Huminga” by Zild Soft and minimal in sound, this track captures the feeling of emotional overload without saying too much. It doesn’t offer advice or solutions— it simply tells you to breathe. And sometimes, that gentle reminder is enough to help you keep going.
These songs don’t try to fix anything—and maybe that’s the point. They remind men that it’s okay to slow down, to feel what you feel, and to know that struggling doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human.

SPORTS FOUNDATION FOR THE YOUTH BRINGS BASKETBALL, PICKLEBALL CLINICS TO TANAY KIDS
TOBY’S Youth Sports Foundation, in partnership with Toby’s Sports, recently held free grassroots basketball and pickleball clinics at the covered court of Barangay Cuyambay in Tanay, Rizal.
The outreach aimed to introduce children from Cuyambay Elementary School to the basics of both sports while promoting teamwork, confidence, and physical activity.
Toby’s Sports volunteers, along with professional pickleball coach Mark Casal and e-commerce head Luis Angelo Claudio , led the sessions. Pickleball, one of the country’s fastest-growing sports, drew curiosity and excitement, while basketball
kept the energy high.
To support continued play, the foundation donated sports equipment including balls, paddles, and nets to the school. “We’re building more than athletes—we’re building self-esteem and values,” said Toby’s Sports president Toby Claudio , who personally handed over the donated gear.
Andrea Tan , head of marketing and customer experience, added, “The laughter and energy we saw from the kids show how sport can uplift and connect communities.”
The clinic is part of the foundation’s push to make sports more accessible to youth in underserved areas nationwide.

SUMMA CUM LAUDE URGES REFORMS IN STUDENT AID

D. Magcawas , class
valedictorian and summa cum laude of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, urged government agencies to support more students in need, saying education should no longer be a “test of survival.
Magcawas, who graduated with a general average of 3.964 and ranked first among both his batch and the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management (SHRIM), shared his story during the second term graduation rites of Batch 2025. He recalled struggling through financial
hardship, scholarship rejections, and family setbacks before earning his degree as a Pierre Romançon Grant scholar.
“Behind the 3.964 were nights of fear and days of survival,” he said. “Three scholarship rejections, a robbery, a flooded home, a failed once-in-alifetime opportunity, and the constant fear of losing my education.”
The 22-year-old student leader—who also worked part-time while studying—paid just ₱50 for tuition during his time at De La Salle Lipa. He swept classrooms and painted walls in exchange. When the pandemic hit, he sold vegetables and poultry to help his family after they lost their small grocery.
Magcawas recalled nearly backing out of Benilde in 2021 after receiving only a partial scholarship and being rejected by other institutions. He secretly sent an acceptance email, and the risk paid off.
“I may not be the brightest, but I hope I’ve made you proud for choosing me,” he said.
Magcawas credited his mother—a high school dropout who gave up her education to
achievements. “She once told a young boy in Lipa about De La Salle, believing it could change lives. Today, she has a college graduate.”
He questioned why students from marginalized backgrounds still struggle to finish school. “Why do these stories stand out? Because they’re rare,” he said. “Education should be a right, not a luxury.”
Addressing the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), he urged reforms that go beyond grades: “Support must reach those who fight silent battles. Let’s stop asking the youth if they want to study. The answer is always yes. The better question is, can they?”
Magcawas closed his address by reminding fellow graduates that education is the great equalizer: “Move your mountain, even if it’s slow. Because your story matters.”
LIFE Young
IN PUREGOLD Channel’s digital series Si Sol at Si Luna, love unfolds not through grand declarations, but in quiet, familiar moments— side glances during the daily commute, conversations cut short, and a question left hanging: can two people in different life stages fall in love and make it last?
In Episode 4, Signs, Sol (Zaijian Jaranilla) and Luna (Jane Oineza) finally speak after weeks of missed chances. It’s brief, almost hesitant, but leaves a mark. Luna agrees to join Sol’s film project—but only if fate steps in again. No numbers. No social media. Just pure chance. And just like that, the universe answers. They meet again. But while viewers swoon over their slow-burning connection, one question lingers: can love work when you’re a decade apart?
The series doesn’t romanticize the idea of dating outside your generation, but it shows the honest realities.
The highs: lFresh perspectives. Different life stages bring
different worldviews, helping both partners grow.
lStability meets spontaneity. One provides grounding, the other excitement. The contrast creates balance.
lEmotional depth. Being challenged by someone older or younger often leads to more self-awareness and growth.
The hurdles:
lClashing priorities. One may be focused on career, the other ready to settle down.
lDifferent timelines. What “forever” looks like may not match up.
lPop culture gaps. Even jokes or memes can miss the mark, leading to disconnect. Sol, a Gen Z idealist, represents a love that’s hopeful and open-ended. Luna, shaped by heartbreak and experience, is more guarded. Together, they navigate what it means to connect—despite the gap.
Joao Constancia, who plays Ben, says age-gap relationships come with both pros and cons. “An older partner may bring maturity and

CHARTING THE BOODLE FIGHT:
THE VISIONARY FILIPINO BEHIND THE TRADITION
BA seasoned professional with a passion for Filipino cuisine, Barcenas saw an opportunity to elevate the typical island tour by incorporating a communal, hands-on dining experience.
Drawing inspiration from military-style kamayan feasts, he and his team pioneered the inclusion of boodle fights—spread-out banana leaves piled high with grilled seafood, roasted meats, fresh fruits, and steaming rice—into their tour packages back in 2015. This not only satisfied hungry travelers but also showcased Filipino food culture in its most authentic and engaging form.
“As a graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management and a passion for cooking, I curated the idea of creating the first boodle fight on the island with the help of my co-workers at Siargao Bleu Resort and Spa. Surprisingly, guests loved it—especially the foreign ones,” Barcenas said.
He founded Chef Choipao Travel and Tours to connect visitors with locals and showcase Siargao’s true charm through shared experiences. More than just sightseeing, Barcenas turned island-hopping into cultural exchanges—through boodle fights, local cooking, and off-the-beaten-path tours— highlighting the island’s warmth, traditions,
