SIMULATE CRISIS
HELICOPTERS buzzed in the shadow of a smoldering volcano and boats rescued dummies from the sea this week in a show of maritime unity by Japan, the United States and the Philippines.
The joint coast guard exercises held off Japan’s southwest shore follow a warning from the three countries about Chinese activity in disputed regional waters.
Tensions between China and other claimants to parts of the East and South China Seas have pushed Japan to deepen ties with the Philippines and the United States.
This week marked the second time the countries’ coast guards have held training drills together, and the first in Japan.

They took place over five days off the coast of Kagoshima, where Sakura jima volcano dominates the

DOE TO DISCUSS STAGGERED PRICE HIKE, DISCOUNTS FOR PUVS MONDAY
THE Department of Energy will meet with oil firms on Monday to discuss a possible staggered implementation of next week’s major oil price hike, with diesel price increase now seen to hit P5.10 per liter.
Jetti Petroleum president Leo Bellas said the possibility of extending promos and discount offerings of gas stations to help mitigate the impact of the price increase will also be raised during the meeting.
Crude futures have soared as the Israel-Iran conflict showed no signs of easing, with investors pricing in the risk of tighter oil supplies that would likely weigh on economic growth.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on Friday warned consumer prices could exceed 5 percent if global oil benchmarks, particularly Dubai crude, reach $100 per barrel and the Philippine peso sharply depreciates.

PH SETS ALERT LEVEL 3 IN WAR-TORN IRAN, ISRAEL
DFA SAYS PINOYS IN TEL AVIV PREFER TO STAY DESPITE TENSIONS
THE Department of Foreign Affairs on Saturday advised Filipinos in Israel and Iran as well as their relatives here in the Philippines to stay calm and not panic after the agency raised Alert Level 3, paving the way for voluntary repatriation, noting that there have been several “misinformation” posts on social media.
Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Robert Ferrer said: “The ones panicking are the relatives here in the Philippines. They (Filipinos in Israel and Iran) are the ones reassuring their relatives back here.”
“It is as if the Filipinos there are hardened. They treat these missile attacks as super typhoons. They are vigilant, but after, it’s okay and life goes on.”
“If you ask most of our Filipinos in Tel Aviv, they

are calm, they don’t want to go home. They believe in the Israeli system to protect them, to take care of them,” Ferrer added. Under Alert Level 3, “all overseas Filipinos in Israel and Iran are enjoined to return to the Philippines.”

“Travel by Filipinos to both these countries is highly discouraged, due to the ongoing crisis and the actual closure of their air space and seaports,” the DFA said in its advisory.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose De Vega added that all Filipino diplomats at the Philippine Embassy in Tehran will stay in Iran to continue monitoring and assisting the situation.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he is focused on attending to the needs of the country and the Filipino people and has no intention to intervene in how Congress handles the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
In the latest episode of his podcast aired on Saturday, Mr. Marcos responded to a comment that the President has a “say” on whatever the decision would be on Duterte’s impeachment case.
PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. warned against making even the slightest concession in maritime disputes, adding the Phil-

The DFA said the majority of around 1,200 Filipinos living and working in Iran are married to Iranian citizens while only over a dozen are workers. Nine have so far requested to be repatriated.
“We are considering all the possible safe border exits from Iran. Tehran is now almost like a ghost town and many have left, including Filipinos,” Ferrer said.
There are over 30,000 Filipinos in Israel, of which at least 191 have requested to be repatriated.
De Vega said the first 26 repatriates from Israel are scheduled to return to the Philippines next week.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he is focused on bringing “significant and tangible” changes to the country in his last three years in office.
In the latest episode of his podcast aired on Saturday, Mr. Marcos said giving Filipinos a more comfortable life is the legacy he wants to leave behind when his term ends in 2028.
Mr. Marcos said he is eyeing a quarterly assessment of government performance as part of his efforts to recalibrate his administration. He earlier announced a “more rigorous” performance review extending beyond the Cabinet level.

CHINESE COAST GUARD FIRES WATER CANNON AT CIVILIANS
By Rex Espiritu
ACHINESE Coast Guard (CCG) vessel harassed and fired water cannons at Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ships manned by Filipino fishermen near Panatag Shoal on Friday, according to Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela.
In a statement, Tarriela said the incident happened around 10 a.m. on June 20 as four BFAR vessels
— BRP Datu Tamblot, BRP Datu Taradapit, BRP Datu Bankaya, and BRP Datu Daya — were delivering
fuel subsidies to local fishermen.
“BRP Datu Taradapit faced aggressive maneuvers from Chinese Coast Guard vessel CCG-4203, which came within 600 yards and fired a water cannon 15.6 nautical miles southwest of Panatag Shoal,” Tarriela said.
Despite hostile actions, including blocking maneuvers and a direct water cannon hit on the port quarter of the BRP Datu Taradapit, the vessel was able to evade further damage. Later, at 10:30 a.m., CCG-3105 fired a water cannon at BRP Datu Tamblot from 18.1 nautical miles southeast of the shoal, though the attack missed.

BI AGENTS NAB PAKISTANI
ILLEGALLY STAYING IN PH
PAGADIAN CITY—The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested a Pakistani national for illegally staying in the Philippines, following intelligence reports about his unauthorized presence in Barangay Tiguma, Pagadian City.
Sajjad Khan, 31, was apprehended on June 16 through a mission order from Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado. The BI said Khan had been banned from reentering the Philippines since 2016. Khan later admitted to entering the country illegally by boat—a method often referred to as the “backdoor.” He was found to have violated Section 37(a)(1) of the Philippine Immigration Act for illegal entry and being undocumented.
The suspect was initially detained at the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office before being transferred to the Bureau of Immigration Warden Facility at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City the next day.
RUSSIAN VLOGGER STILL IN CUSTODY DESPITE BAIL
RUSSIAN internet personality Vitaly Zdorovetskiy has been transferred back to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) Warden Facility after posting bail for his local court cases, immigration authorities confirmed on Friday.
Zdorovetskiy posted bail before Regional Trial Court Branch 153 in Taguig on June 18, but BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado clarified that he remains in custody due to an ongoing deportation case.
“Even if he files for bail for his local cases, he will still be returned to BI custody,” Viado said. “He will not be allowed to roam around as he is already seen as an undesirable alien.”

People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) warships, and several maritime militia vessels were spotted in the area, which Tarriela said aimed to disrupt BFAR’s humanitarian mission.
“All BFAR operations took place within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” he added. “Filipino fishermen have sovereign rights in these waters, as upheld by the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, UNCLOS, and the 2016 Arbitral Award.”
Panatag Shoal (also known as Bajo de Masinloc) lies 124 nautical miles from Zambales and is well within the 200-nautical mile EEZ granted under international law.

GOV’T CRACKS DOWN ON TAXI DRIVERS AT AIRPORT
By Joel E. Zurbano
THE Department of Transportation
(DOTr) and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) have launched a crackdown on illegal and overcharging taxis at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), in response to a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
On Saturday, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon and MIAA General Manager Eric Jose Ines led the operation at NAIA Terminal 3, catching two taxis — one of which was illegally operating under a truck franchise.
The crackdown, done with support from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), aims to curb rampant overcharging and the presence of “colorum” taxis at the country’s main airport.
Dizon said firm enforcement and heavy penalties are needed to stop passenger exploitation.
Ines also revealed that internal reforms will target corrupt airport personnel after reports of a 60/40 extortion scheme involving members of the Airport Police Department (APD). The scheme required drivers to give a cut of their earnings, forcing them to inflate fares to recover losses.
One driver, arrested for overcharging a passenger P1,200 for a short ride, pointed to APD officers as the scheme’s masterminds.

PBBM ANNOUNCES PH-JAPAN SPACE PACT
By Charles Dantes
PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday announced a new collaboration between the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) aimed at using space technology to boost disaster response, agriculture, and public safety.
The announcement came after Marcos met with JAXA executives during the final leg of his working visit to Japan.
“We’re working with JAXA and
our very own PhilSA to use space technology that helps protect and improve the lives of Filipinos,” Mr. Marcos said in a statement.
The partnership aims to deploy advanced satellites for better typhoon tracking, faster disaster response, precision farming, and stronger resilience against natural calamities.
“With better satellites, we can track typhoons and respond to disasters more quickly, help our farmers plan smarter, and keep our communities safer,” he added.
JAXA has previously partnered with the Philippines through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), contributing to the launch of the DIWATA and MAYA microsatellites.
Established in 2003, JAXA is Japan’s national aerospace agency and a global leader in space R&D and international collaboration.
The partnership reflects the Marcos administration’s push to modernize the country’s technology and infrastructure amid intensifying climate challenges.

MMDA WARNS PUBLIC OF FAKE
MESSAGES ON NCAP WEBSITE
By Joel E. Zurbano
THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has warned the public against a syndicate sending fake text messages demanding payment for No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP) violations.
Officials clarified that no such payment notifications are being issued at this time.
“The text message circulating regarding the payment of fines for NCAP violations is fake and did not come from the MMDA,” the agency said in an advisory Saturday. It also clarified that its official NCAP notification system is still under development.
The MMDA urged the public to make payments only through legitimate channels and report any suspicious messages or posts via Hotline 136 or its official social media pages.
Meanwhile, the agency conducted a public consultation with motorcycle groups, ride-hailing app firms, and transport network companies to discuss concerns related to NCAP and traffic regulations. These efforts aim to improve road safety and protect the rights of riders.
MMDA chair Romando Artes said the recent Supreme Court decision partially lifting the TRO on NCAP will help the agency manage traffic congestion more effectively while improving safety for all road users in Metro Manila.

CUSTOMS SEIZES P219 M SMUGGLED FUEL IN LA UNION
By Joel E. Zurbano
AGENTS of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service-Manila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP) have seized over P219 million worth of smuggled diesel fuel in La Union, authorities said Saturday. The operation was launched after receiving reports of illegal fuel transfers at the port.
CIIS Director Verne Enciso said motor tanker MT Bernadette was caught transferring diesel to lorry trucks in a “paihi” operation on
the night of June 19. An initial inventory revealed approximately 259,000 liters of diesel fuel were involved, stored in both the tanker and two trucks.
Ten crew members aboard the tanker and 11 others identified as drivers, lookouts, porters, and accomplices were apprehended after failing to produce legal documents for the operation. Inquest proceedings for those arrested are underway.
Customs Commissioner Bien -
venido Rubio emphasized the need to intensify crackdowns on the entry of unmarked fuel, which he said not only harms the economy but also endangers consumers. Armed Forces personnel were deployed to secure the area during the raid. The suspects, including the vessel’s owners, ship captain, and operators of the trucks, will face administrative and criminal charges for violating the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act and the TRAIN Law.

US JUDGE BLOCKS TRUMP BAN ON FOREIGN STUDENTS AT HARVARD
NEW YORK—A federal judge on Friday indefinitely paused Donald Trump’s bid to block Harvard from enrolling foreign students as the US president said a “deal” with the Ivy League school was in the works.
The order by District Judge Allison Burroughs will allow international students to continue to attend the elite university while a lawsuit filed by Harvard plays out in the courts.
Trump, who has cut federal grants for Harvard and tried a host of different tactics to block the institution from hosting international students, said that his administration has been holding negotiations with Harvard.
“Many people have been asking what is going on with Harvard University and their large-scale improprieties that we have been addressing, looking for a solution,” Trump said in a post Friday on Truth Social.
“We have been working closely with Harvard, and it is very possible that a Deal will be announced over the next week or so,” he said. “If a Settlement is made on the basis that is currently being discussed, it will be ‘mind-bogglingly’ HISTORIC, and very good for our Country.”
Trump did not provide any details about the purported “deal.”
The Trump administration has sought to remove Harvard from an electronic student immigration registry and instructed embassies to deny visas to international students hoping to attend the Massachusetts-based university. AFP

Dozens of personnel took part, with Friday’s final exercises featuring one vessel from each of the three countries’ coast guards.
They included the BRP Teresa Magbanua, which was provided to the Philippines by Japan through a loan agreement.
The 2,265-ton vessel, named after a schoolteacher and revolutionary, usually monitors Chinese boats in the South China Sea.
China and the Philippines have engaged in months of confrontations in the contested waters, which Beijing claims almost entirely, despite an international ruling that the assertion has no legal basis.
Chinese and Japanese patrol vessels in the East China Sea also routinely face off around disputed islands.
On Friday, Manila accused Beijing of using a water cannon on two of its fisheries department boats as they attempted to resupply Philippine fishermen near the disputed Scarborough Shoal.
The US Coast Guard was represented in the exercises by the cutter Stratton, which can carry up to 170 personnel, and Japan by the 6,000ton Asanagi.
Friday’s drills began with a simulation of a person falling overboard.
Once the dummy, wearing a bright red lifejacket, was in the water, a US drone was launched from the Stratton, circling high above as it scanned the area.
A small Philippine rescue boat then emerged from the Teresa Magbanua, zipping across the water before coast guard personnel fished the dummy out of the water. AFP
advancing AI tools that have blurred the lines between truth and fabrication.
The surge in wartime misinformation has exposed an urgent need for stronger detection tools, experts say, as major tech platforms have largely weakened safeguards by scaling back content moderation and reducing reliance on human factcheckers.
After Iran struck Israel with barrages of missiles last week, AI-generated videos falsely claimed to show damage inflicted on Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion Airport.
The videos were widely shared across Facebook, Instagram, and X.
Using a reverse image search, Agence FrancePresse’s fact-checkers found that the clips were originally posted by a TikTok account that produces AI-generated content.
There has been a “surge in generative AI misinformation, specifically related to the Iran-Israel conflict,” Ken Jon Miyachi, founder of the Austinbased firm BitMindAI, told AFP.
“These tools are being leveraged to manipulate public perception, often amplifying divisive or misleading narratives with unprecedented scale and sophistication.”
‘Photo-realism’
GetReal Security, a US company focused on detecting manipulated media including AI deepfakes, also identified a wave of fabricated videos related to the Israel-Iran conflict.
The company linked the visually compelling videos – depicting apocalyptic scenes of war-damaged Israeli aircraft and buildings as well as Iranian missiles mounted on a trailer – to Google’s Veo 3 AI generator, known for hyper-realistic visuals. AFP

EE-COMMERCE BOOSTS HOMEGROWN BUSINESSES
UNICE Rey-Montesa returned to her hometown of Boac, Marinduque to carry on her grandmother’s baking legacy. Ricardo Magnayon Jr., a retired rubber farmer in Sarangani, turned to cacao to help his community bounce back. Though they come from opposite ends of the country, both found the same lifeline in e-commerce—bringing their local products to customers nationwide.
Marinduque kitchen
Rey’s Bakeshop traces its beginnings to 1987, when Josefa Rodil, a retired home economics teacher, began making uraro cookies using arrowroot flour sourced from farmers in Marinduque. For years, the business remained local, quietly building a following based on consistency, quality, and familiarity.
When Josefa passed the business down to her daughter Felisa, and eventually to her granddaughter Eunice, the bakery still had no digital presence—just the strength of a family recipe and a loyal local base.
But in 2017, Eunice left her job overseas to help carry the legacy forward. “I came home knowing the bakery had potential, but we didn’t know how to scale beyond the island,” she said.
New start in Sarangani
Thousands of kilometers away in Mindanao, Magnayon was facing a different kind of turning point. He had planned to retire into rubber farming, but when market prices collapsed, he switched to cacao - more resilient, more sustainable and, in his words, “more hopeful.”
His decision was not merely about personal recovery. It was about building something other farmers could benefit from, too.
In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, he launched Don Ricardo Chocolate Shop, producing tablea and chocolate bars made from locally grown cacao.
With restrictions in place and mobility limited, the business sold what it could through Facebook, mostly within General Santos.

“The vision was bigger than that. But we couldn’t go beyond the city at first,” said Princess, the owner’s daughter who helps run the business. Pivot to digital
For both Rey’s Bakeshop and Don Ricardo Chocolate Shop, the pandemic forced a shift from survival mode to reinvention. Sales had slowed dramatically. Access to customers was limited. But through the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) E-Commerce Program, both businesses were introduced to Shopee.
At first, it was unfamiliar ground - learning how to list products, manage orders, and navigate logistics. But the shift paid off quickly.
“Once we joined Shopee, we started getting orders from places we never imagined. Cavite, Metro Manila, Laguna. Suddenly, the product that had only ever been sold in Marinduque was reaching Luzon households,” Eunice said.
Don Ricardo Chocolate saw a similar breakthrough since the shift to e-commerce gave the brand visibility it hadn’t previously enjoyed, allowing customers from across the country to discover their products without the team ever leaving Sarangani.
Many of those early buyers have since become repeat customers, helping to build a loyal base far beyond their home province.
Scaling with intention
E-commerce did more than help both businesses stay afloat - it gave them room to grow.
Rey’s Bakeshop is now expanding distribution throughout Luzon and working toward FDALTO certification to ensure product safety and compliance.

MANULIFE PH, PFIZER TEAM UP FOR HEALTH AWARENESS
MANULIFE Philippines has partnered with Pfizer to promote disease awareness and patient education, as part of its Better Days campaign.
“We understand that health and wellness awareness and access are crucial for our customers to achieve Better Days. Our collaboration with Pfizer opens additional avenues to reach more Filipinos with the information and access they need, boosting their level of awareness on the importance of holistic health,” said Manulife Philippines chief marketing officer Sonali Verma.
The collaboration will deliver public campaigns focused on preventive healthcare, available
treatments, disease management, and financial protection from critical illnesses.
“Our collaboration with Manulife represents a significant step towards enhancing health literacy and raising awareness about preventive healthcare and treatments. By
empowering individuals with the knowledge they need, we aim to create a healthier and more resilient community said Pfizer Philippines commercial lead Albert Magpantay.

Better Days promotes health as key to financial security.

It features Manulife Medical Secure, a health insurance plan with up to P5 million in coverage and cashless hospitalization, and Manulife HealthFlex, which provides lifetime protection against major illnesses like cancer, heart attacks, and strokes, and offers potential dividends and maturity benefits

They’ve improved packaging and are slowly building the capacity to meet rising demand, while continuing to source arrowroot from local suppliers and employ women in their community.
Don Ricardo Chocolate, meanwhile, has opened a café at SM City General Santos to establish a local presence and is preparing to open a branch in Quezon City.
The brand now serves customers in over 30 provinces and is developing new product lines, including flavored chocolates and curated gift sets.
Staying grounded
Even as their businesses grow, both entrepreneurs remain firmly grounded in the communities that shaped them. If anything, it’s reinforced their connection to where they started.
Rey’s Bakeshop remains a family-run operation. The cookies are still made in small batches. The community is still central to its identity.
Don Ricardo continues to work directly with smallholder farmers, offering training in post-harvest practices and quality control to help raise income and standards in the local cacao supply chain. These two businesses didn’t have the same origin or trajectory. But they were shaped by similar forces: the pressure to adapt, the need to modernize, and the opportunity to reach farther than ever before through digital platforms.

CONVERGE ICT Solutions Inc., in partnership with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), is rolling out a nationwide 24-hour hackathon series dubbed Byte Forward, designed to deliver innovative tech solutions to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the country.
The initiative will be held alongside PCCI’s regional business conferences in North Luzon, Visayas, National Capital Region, Mindanao, and South Luzon and will culminate at the 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo set for October 20 to 22, 2025 at the SMX Convention Center in Manila.

“We want to maximize the use of technology in every area where business owners stand to benefit. In the hackathon, we will not just concentrate on solving real-life problems of business owners but crucially, we will tap students that have the technological knowhow to solve these problems and put them in the same room,” said Converge CEO Dennis Anthony Uy, who also chairs this year’s Philippine Business Conference and Exhibition (PBC&E).
Converge and PCCI’s local chambers, composed mostly of MSMEs, will define key business challenges based on actual pain points encountered by enterprises. Ten student teams, composed of third- and fourth-year college students from host regions, will be tasked to develop viable techdriven solutions within a 24-hour coding sprint.
“The hackathon is certainly a welcome move for MSMEs, particularly as it will come up with viable and practical technology solutions that meet their needs and can help them move up the value chain. We are happy that Converge, through the efforts of our PBC Chair Dennis Uy, is making this happen,” said PCCI president Enunina Mangio.
Each regional leg will award P50,000 to the top-performing team while regional winners will advance to a national face-off during the PBC&E in October, where a grand prize of up to P500,000 will be at stake.
“Linking up the private sector and the academe has always been an advocacy of PCCI. But where we can bring value is injecting this focus on innovation, as a way of encouraging these businesses to look to emerging technologies to future-proof their operations,” Uy said.
The first stop of the Byte Forward hackathon series will take place during the North Luzon Business Conference in Bataan from June 19 to 20, 2025. The two-day event will also feature a trade fair exhibit and keynote sessions from leaders in government, academia, and industry, carrying the theme “Northern Philippines: Agile. Innovative. Soaring.”

country but also aligns with ACMobility’s goal of accelerating e-mobility adoption through a reliable, nationwide service infrastructure.
HONDA REINFORCES ROAD SAFETY COMMITMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES
IN response to recent vehicular accidents, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), Honda Philippines, Inc. (HPI), and Honda Safety Driving Center (HSDC) hosted the “One Honda Road Safety” event last June 16, 2025 with the objective to underscore the brand’s unwavering commitment to road safety awareness and its ambitious goal of a collision-free society by 2050. The event featured a morning seminar on safe driving and riding behaviors, hazard prediction, and vehicle maintenance. The afternoon provided practical demonstrations, including test drives of models equipped with Honda SENSING, Honda’s advanced driver-assist system. Participants experienced features like the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) firsthand, witnessing how the technology helps prevent or reduce the severity of frontal collisions. Motorcycle safety was also highlighted, with HPI showcasing models featuring Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Combined Braking System (CBS) for enhanced braking control.

A GLOBAL PRICE WAR AND SHIFTING TIDES
which is already contending with weaker demand and a significant overcapacity, a situation that ironically, the industry itself helped create several years prior.
Reports indicate that many Chinese EV makers are now operating at less than 50% production capacity utilization. This dire situation is leading to substantial profit cuts and forcing smaller competitors to either consolidate or cease operations entirely. Even BYD, a leader in sales within China and globally, has reportedly seen a market value loss of $15.6 billion since its shares peaked in early June 2025. This has prompted their aggressive stance on price reductions. Last year, the Chinese automotive sector witnessed the closure of 16 car manufacturers, while 13 new entrants joined the market. More recently, Jiyue Auto, a venture jointly backed by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. and technology giant Baidu Inc., is reported to have drastically cut production and is now seeking fresh funding to remain afloat. This escalating price war, now widespread across the Chinese EV industry, has even spurred intervention from the ruling government, which has been a principal funder of the nation’s transition to zero-emission vehicles. However, the Chinese authorities, who directly attribute the “rat-race competition” to the EV manufacturers themselves, appear to have had limited success in curbing the intense rivalry.
While Tesla grapples with its sales challenges, Chinese EVs have largely ceased entering the US market due to stiff tariffs. They also face considerable difficulty in penetrating the Japanese and Korean markets, primarily due to the strong nationalistic stance within those countries. This leaves the Southeast Asian region, including the Philippines, as a significant opportunity market for electric vehicles. However, with the current, pervasive EV price war raging in “all directions,” would you be daring enough to purchase your chosen “green car” now, when there’s

AUGUSTO BENEDICTO

A TRIATHLETE’S JOURNEY FROM POVERTY TO PODIUM GLORY
By Alona Cochon
LONG before the nish lines, medals, and global competitions, August Benedicto’s story began on a bike — not racing, but delivering blocks of ice under the searing Tarlac sun.
With eight siblings and a family struggling to make ends meet in Paniqui, young August knew that education was a luxury he had to ght for.
So he peddled through early mornings, balancing schoolbooks with sacks of ice, chasing dreams that, back then, seemed far from the Ironman banners he would one day cross.
Now 41, Benedicto has become one of the most enduring names in Philippine triathlon. At the recently concluded Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 Subic Bay—held under grueling 40-degree heat—the Irelandbased Filipino veteran dug deep once again, nishing second overall with a time of 4 hours, 40 minutes, and 58 seconds. His performance earned him the Bagong Bayani Award, a special recognition given to elite Filipino athletes who continue to raise the ag in international endurance sports.

EDUARD Flores and Edna Magtubo once again stamped their class in the Manila leg of the EastWest Dream Run 2025 held recently at Filinvest City Alabang.
The veteran campaigners emerged as the fastest nishers in the 30K race which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the bank which highlighted personal milestones, quiet perseverance, and the drive to keep chasing what matters.
Flores timed at one hour, 43 minutes, 25 seconds to pace the males, while Magtubo clocked at two hours, 14 minutes, 58 seconds to nish the course in this race organized by RUNRIO.
Edsel Moral (1:45:28) ended as runner-up among the men followed by Vincent Arvin Avestruz (1:50:34), while Jennelyn Isibido (2:21:45) and Rocel Maestro (2:27:37) completed the podium in the women’s division
More than running through the tape, the EastWest Dream Run 2025 also was for a cause as it handed checks to two worthy non-government organizations in Young Focus, which is focused

The course, brutal by any standard, featured a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike ride, and a punishing 21-kilometer run. Benedicto posted splits of 31:19 in the swim, 2:30:06 on the bike, and capped it o with a 1:33:59 run—yet another strong showing in a career that has spanned over two decades.
It’s a journey built on quiet sacri ce. His rst foray into competitive sports came at 14, when he was discovered for his raw talent in long-distance running. From school-level track meets to eventually earning a slot in the Palarong Pambansa, Benedicto made each opportunity count.
He entered his rst duathlon in 2003 and nished near the bottom of the pack. But the re had been lit. By 2005, he was part of the Philippine Sports Commission’s training pool and represented the country at the Southeast Asian Games in Pattaya, Thailand, where he clinched a bronze medal.
It was there that he met British triathlete and future Ironman legend Chrissie Wellington, who encouraged him to try his hand at the sport that would later de ne his athletic life.
He joined his rst Ironman 70.3 in 2009 in Camarines Sur and finished as the fourth Filipino to complete the course. In 2012, he made history by clinching his first Filipino Elite title at the Cobra Ironman 70.3—a feat he repeated in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
“I was so excited for this year’s race,”
Benedicto said after the event. “Just imagine, I’m already 41 and I’m still competing with younger athletes, national team members, and elite triathletes. But I focused on my training—10 to 15 hours a week, every week. One hour swimming, one hour running, and 100 kilometers of biking every weekend.”
Dedication, it seems, is the fuel that keeps Benedicto going. He credits his wife, Anna, and longtime friend Cesar Manlikmot as pillars of support through the highs and lows.
“This award is for my family. For Anna. For everyone who stood by me,” he said with pride.
As the nish line at Subic fades into memory, a new goal already looms: the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Mabea, Spain, this November. Benedicto is preparing for it with the same re that once drove a teenage boy to deliver ice—not just to help his family, but to carve out a future no one thought possible.
Benedicto’s story stands out—not just for the result, but for the road taken to get there. From hauling ice to hauling medals, he continues to prove that true endurance isn’t measured in kilometers—it’s built on grit.

and Jaspher Del no (35:45), while Melody Lantad (49:01) and Cristy Advincula (49:47) were second and third among the women. Mark Angelo Biagtan (16:49) finished first in the men’s 5K followed by Cavin Vidal (17:02) and Kristoffer Troy Sison (20:01), while Jo Punay (22:35) topped the women’s 5K ahead of Wilma Nano (23:09) and Mikhaila Maia Sophia Cordero (23:30). Aside from the traditional distance races, the EastWest Dream Run 2025 also saw children and furry friends join in the fun.

Billed as ‘MMA Fight Night,’ the event promises an electrifying showcase of skill, grit, and sportsmanship as local and regional fighters clash inside the cage.
THE sprawling open elds of Ayala Land’s Alviera recently came alive with speed, spirit, and sportsmanship as more than 400 participants and 10 teams converged for a groundbreaking ultimate frisbee event unlike any other in Luzon. Far more than a display of athleticism, the tournament doubled as a fundraiser for the Binibinis Pilipinas Ultimate Team—the official Philippine delegation to the upcoming 2025 World Under-24 (U24) Ultimate Championships organized by the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) in Spain.
Organized under the Alviera Sports Program in partnership with XMPLR Sports, the event marked the launch of a long-term initiative to transform Alviera into Central Luzon’s premier hub for sports and adventure.
“Our vision is to grow Alviera into the region’s go-to destination for sports and adventure,” said Tin Yabao, Marketing Manager for Ayala Land Estates. “This event is just the beginning of our deeper commitment to cultivating vibrant athletic communities in the region.”

At the heart of the event was the debut of the XMPLR Lightning Tournament Format, a gamechanging innovation designed to increase action on the eld. With more playing time and a faster tempo, the format elevated excitement for both athletes and spectators.
“At XMPLR, we believe in the power of sports to inspire and create change,” said Robbie de Vera, President of XMPLR Sports. “This tournament not only supports the sport’s growth but also plays a direct role in helping the U24 Binibinis reach the world stage. And this is just the beginning—expect more exciting XMPLR events ahead.”
For the Binibinis Pilipinas Ultimate Team, the Alviera Lightning Frisbee Championship o ered more than a competitive platform—it was a vital source of support as they geared up for their international campaign.
“We are deeply grateful to Alviera and XMPLR for making this possible,” shared Camy Cruz, a member of the U24 Philippine Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Team. “This event energizes not only our team but the entire frisbee community. We hope to make the country proud in Spain, and we invite everyone to be part of our journey.”

OKRA IS SAFE FOR DOGS BUT…
By Niko Gabriel Salgado

OKRA, also known as lady's finger, is a green, pod-shaped vegetable popular in many cuisines for its rich fiber content and nutritional benefits. While okra can be a healthy addition to the human diet, pet owners may wonder whether it is safe for dogs. Plain, cooked okra is generally safe for dogs and can even offer some health benefits, such as aiding digestion and providing vitamins.
But okra can be given to dogs only in moderation. Okra is also not good for a dog with urinary issues or a history of kidney stones.
Nutritional Profile
Okra is a nutrient-rich vegetable that offers several health benefits for dogs when fed appropriately.
Dr. Olivia Garcia, in the article “Lady Fingers for Dogs” published on the Dogs Frontier website, says okra contains:
• Vitamins: High in vitamins A, B6, C, and K, which support immune function, skin health, and overall vitality.
• Minerals: Provides essential minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron, contributing to bone health, nerve function, and red blood cell production.
• Fiber: Contains both soluble and insolu-

ble fiber,

Rich in antioxi dants, including polyphenols, which help combat oxida tive stress and in flammation.

MANAGING CAT SPRAYING:
By Mariana Burgos
CAT spraying, a common behavioral issue, can be a frustrating experience for cat owners. It is essential to understand the reasons behind this behavior and implement effective strategies to manage and potentially eliminate it.
Understanding the Behavior Cat spraying is a specific form of urine marking, a behavior distinct from urination in a litter box. Spraying involves a cat backing up to a vertical surface, such as a wall, furniture, or door, and directing a stream of urine backward. This behavior is often accompanied by a twitching tail and a characteristic posture.
As described in the article "Cat Spraying: Why Cats Do It and How to Stop It" by PetMD, this is a territorial behavior. The urine marks serve as a visual and olfactory signal, communicating information to other cats about the sprayer's presence, territory, and reproductive status.
Why Do Cats Spray?
Several factors can contribute to cat spraying. Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for effective management.
• Territoriality and Social Stress
One of the drivers of spraying is territoriality. Cats are naturally territorial animals, and spraying is a way to mark their boundaries. This is
Potential Risks and Considerations
While okra can be a healthy addition to a dog's diet, Dr. Garcia notes that certain precautions should be taken:
• Digestive Upset: Excessive consumption of okra can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as gas, bloating, or diarrhea due to its high fiber content.
• Choking Hazard: The texture and size of okra pods can pose a choking risk, especially for smaller dogs. It is essential to cut okra into small, manageable pieces before feeding. Or grind the okra.
• Oxalates: Okra contains oxalates, which can contribute to the formation of kidney stones in dogs predisposed to this condition. Dogs with a history of urinary issues should avoid okra.
• Allergic Reactions: Though rare, some dogs may be allergic to okra. Signs of an allergic reaction include itching, swelling, vomiting, or diarrhea. If any of these symptoms occur, discontinue feeding okra and consult a veterinarian.
Preparation Methods
Fried or seasoned okra, especially those containing garlic or onion, can be toxic to dogs and should be avoided. Always serve plain, cooked okra without added spices or oils.
Safe Feeding Guidelines
To safely incorporate okra into your dog's diet, Dr. Garcia suggests that the owner:
Health Benefits
When introduced into a dog's diet in moderation, okra can offer several health benefits:
• Digestive Health: The fiber content in okra supports healthy digestion and can help prevent constipation.
• Immune Support: Vitamins C and A play a crucial role in enhancing the immune system, helping dogs fight off infections.
• Weight Management: Low in calories, okra serves as a healthy, low-fat treat option for dogs on a weight management plan.
• Blood Sugar Regulation: Some studies suggest that okra may help regulate blood sugar levels, potentially benefiting diabetic dogs.
1. Start Slowly: Introduce okra gradually to monitor your dog's reaction. Begin with a small piece and observe for any adverse effects.
2. Proper Preparation: Wash okra thoroughly to remove any pesticides or contaminants. Cut it into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking hazards.
3. Cooking Methods: Steam or boil okra without adding any seasonings, oils, or butter. Avoid frying or serving raw okra, as these can be difficult for dogs to digest.
4. Moderation is Key: Okra should be an occasional treat, not a regular part of your dog's diet. Limit servings to small amounts once or twice a week.
5. Monitor Health: After feeding okra, observe your dog for any signs of digestive upset or allergic reactions. If any concerning symptoms arise, consult your veterinarian promptly.

particularly common in multi-cat households, where competition for resources or social hierarchy issues can trigger spraying. As noted in "Cat Behavior Problems: Marking and Spraying Behavior" by VCA Animal Hospitals, the presence of other cats, either inside or outside the home, can lead to increased spraying. The cat may feel the need to reinforce its territory, especially if it perceives a threat or feels insecure.
• Stress and Anxiety As stated in "Cat Spraying" by the Cat Behavior Alliance, any disruption to a cat's rou-
tine or perceived sense of security can trigger spraying. Anxiety can manifest in various ways, and spraying is one way a cat might cope with these feelings.
• Medical Conditions In some cases, spraying can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder stones, or other health problems can cause discomfort and lead to inappropriate urination, which can be mistaken for spraying.
• Sexual Maturity and Hormonal Influence Intact (unspayed/unneutered) cats are more
prone to spraying, particularly males. Spraying is often used to attract mates and mark territory during breeding season.

TASTY, PLANT-BASED BUFFET TREATS AT WESTIN
By Tet Defensor

PLANT-BASED food lovers are always at a loss in buffet restaurants. While a typical spread would have a salad bar, most establishments hardly offer interesting entree choices. As a wellnessfocused establishment, Westin Manila believes in offering gourmet quality healthy treats while building awareness of nutritious alternatives, sustainable dishes, and zero-waste meal preparation.
For June, diners can savor the creations of Naked Foods Chef and wellness consultant, Cinty Yñiguez at the hotel’s Seasonal Tastes restaurant. The spread features healthy versions of popular dishes from Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, and Vietnam.
“The food is inspired by my travels to Southeast Asia for many years,” Cinty said.
On Green Mondays, diners can ask for the gluten-free and keto-friendly Skinny Pad Thai made from shirataki noodles; Crispy Szechuan Mushrooms, fried mushrooms with Szechuan spice blend, glazed tamarind sauce, and a vegan hoisin; Plant-based Unagi, Satay Tofu with Peanut Sauce; Vegan Bulgogi; and Vietnamese Spring rolls.
The plant-based choices promise a flavorful experience, even for regular buffet patrons.
“Asian food is known for its bold mix of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors. The key is in the sauces and condiments. I pay close attention to the combination of vegetables and the sauces that boost the flavors. It’s a great combination of color, smell, taste, and texture,” she said.
“The Unagi eggplant is my version of the popular Japanese seafood dish. Bulgogi, which is Korean, is made from vegetables and jack fruit and served with Adlai. The Skinny Pad Thai is spiked with tasty tamarind sauce and the spring rolls are mixed with plantbased fish sauce. No ‘patis,’” Cinty added.
For dessert, the Chef prepared a No-Bake Banoffee pie, made from homemade graham crackers crust, bananas, coconut caramel, and light-dairy-free topping.
The dishes are prepared upon order, and available to all buf fet diners.
“We call it our One Dish Wonder,” explained Executive Chef Rej

“It is made a la minute, prepared upon order. And you can have as many servings as you want. This reduces food waste. “

The Westin’s Monday buffet always includes a plant-based table, for guests who have incorporated healthy, nutritious plant-based meals into their daily lifestyle.

Chef Rej even retained the Vegan Sisig and Isaw from last year’s collaboration with Cosmic Vegan restaurant.
“Even regular buffet diners love the vegan isaw,” he said. The spread is a good takeoff point for those who are considering healthy meal alternatives. Select products from Naked Foods like the Crispy Sisig Burrito and the Mediterranean Garden Shawarma are also available at the Lobby Lounge Deli.
Chef Cinty recommends trying a plant-based dish alongside the other food choices. “At least you ate something healthy from the buffet,” she joked. She has been on a plant-based diet for 25 years and believes anyone starts eating healthy following their own pace. “I believe in the art of small, mindful steps. We could start with one meal a week, and then we can build up on that and perhaps make it one day a week. Slowly but surely,” she said.

choosing better for yourself—especially when it comes to food—takes intention and courage. This campaign champions self-love through mindful eating, reminding everyone that even small decisions, like opting for healthier meals, can be powerful acts of self-care.
Marketing Director Lorent Martin Adrias said:
“Sometimes, better choices start with something as simple as choosing better meals for yourself. When we choose healthier, better meals, we’re not just fueling our bodies but embracing self-love.”
“Choosing Kenny Rogers Roasters is more than a meal decision—it’s a commitment to loving yourself better,” Adrias said. “The legacy of Kenny Rogers Roasters is unmatched, and the future is set to raise the bar even higher.”

ROM watching idols on TV to becoming one himself, member of P-pop boy group PLUUS JL Gaspar is turning a childhood dream into reality as he gears up to debut with the global group AHOF
More than chasing his dream, JL is also proudly bringing the Filipino pride to the global K-pop stage, proving that local talent can shine anywhere in the world.
“Ever since I was a kid, it’s really been my dream to become, specifically, a K-pop idol. Back then, I would just admire idols on TV. Now, I get to live that life and influence other people. It’s such a good feeling,” said JL. The trainee-turned-idol also shared that he and his fellow AHOF members have been training hard in Korea, pushing through the physical and emotional demands of idol life.

“We’re giving our blood, sweat, and tears to this. We really want to deliver great results. For me, not just as an AHOF member but also as a Filipino, too,” he continued, noting that preparation goes beyond skills.
“The most important thing, for me, has been mind conditioning. It’s a whole new world for us. We come from different countries, and we have to adjust to each other—our languages, personalities, everything,” JL shared.
“We’re not just
matching in terms of talent. We’re learning to match in how we connect with each other,” he added.
During the survival series Universe League the P-pop artist finished first in the group’s final ranking. He then admitted he didn’t see it coming.
“Honestly, I never thought I’d be ranked number one. I just wanted to make sure I could debut with the whole group. It wouldn’t mean as much if I debuted alone. My dream was to do this with members I could share the experience with,” he said.
JL also expressed excitement about returning to the Philippines and introducing the group to local fans.
“I’m super excited to bring the members here. I know how excited they are too. We really want to meet our fans in the Philippines,” JL shared.
Adding to his milestones, ahead of his debut, JL was recently tapped as the ambassador for “I Like It, Korea Milk – Philippines.”
“When I found out that I would be the ambassador to promote their products, i was so shocked. It’s like, wow, I was just drinking this almost every day, and now, I’m going to promote it. It’s really fulfilling,” the AHOF member said.
With all the blessings that he is receiving, JL said that he remains grounded.
“To be honest, nothing has really changed. I’m still the same JL. I just found a new family to walk this journey with,” he stated.

NATIONAL Selfie Day came and went this Saturday, but its message lingers—we live in a time when turning the camera on ourselves has become second nature. With just a tap and a front-facing lens, we frame the lives we want others to see. But what happens when the camera keeps rolling and we’re not the ones in control?
In film and TV, the selfie has evolved into something far more complex. It’s not just about capturing a moment, but shaping perception. Whether through fake influencers or lives lived under surveillance, these stories reveal the power—and danger— of being watched, recorded, and relentlessly curated. Here are five films that hold a mirror up to selfie culture and ask, “Who’s really behind the lens?”

The Truman Show (1998) Directed by Peter Weir and starring Jim Carrey,
this media satire features a man unaware that his entire life is broadcasted 24/7—long before social media became ubiquitous. The film is widely regarded as a prescient critique of surveillance, media manipulation, and performative reality.
Catfish (2010)

Ingrid Goes West (2017)
In this dark comedy, Aubrey Plaza plays a woman obsessed with an influencer’s perfectly curated life. As she tries to become internet-famous herself, the line between real and filtered starts to unravel. It’s a sharp look at identity, loneliness, and the cost of chasing relevance.
The Social Dilemma (2020) This Netflix documentary–drama hybrid

features tech insiders who warn that every selfie, like, and share is tracked by algorithms designed to hold

WEAR YOUR LUCK ON YOUR SLEEVE
By Angelica Villanueva
PATRICIA Broniola , a recent graduate of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, has introduced Lucky Strike , a fashion line that showcases handcrafted design with cultural motifs linked to good fortune.

The debut collection includes a range of wearable pieces inspired by global symbols of luck, such as embroidered ladybugs, four-leaf clovers, and crystal-beaded amulets. The brand incorporates artisanal techniques like embroidery, beadwork, and crochet, which Broniola said serve both aesthetic and symbolic purposes.

YOUNG consumers in the Philippines are increasingly choosing smartphones not only for performance and entertainment but also for durability and strong after-sales support, according to Samsung.
With a growing reliance on digital tools for productivity, content creation, and daily tasks, many young buyers are now seeking devices that can withstand long-term use and are backed by dependable customer service. Samsung said that beyond initial performance, Gen Z customers prioritize a seamless ownership experience, including easy access to product support. The company’s after-sales channels include a 24/7 live chat service, customer hotlines, a presence on Viber, and access through the Samsung Members app. Self-help guides are also available online.
SHAPING THE FUTURE FOR YOUNG FILIPINOS
By Nickie Wang
WHILE artificial intelligence continues to raise concerns over automation and job displacement, young Filipino workers are increasingly viewing the technology as a tool for career advancement, particularly in the fields of information technology and cybersecurity.
Organizations like EY Global Delivery Services (GDS) Philippines are providing early-career professionals with access to AI-integrated training programs aimed at preparing them for roles in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Ninna Robyn Manzano, a threat detection and response analyst at EY GDS Philippines, said she was unaware of the range of opportunities in cybersecurity until she joined the company’s Cybersecurity Bootcamp. The program introduces students to hands-on training using tools such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Extended Detection and Response (XDR), and Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems.
“These roles heavily integrate AI,” EY GDS said, noting that many of today’s cybersecurity functions would not exist without the support of advanced technology.

Maez De Guzman, EY GDS Philippines Cybersecurity leader, said the bootcamp aims to equip young workers with technical skills and an ethical mindset to manage AI-powered systems responsibly.
“The morality of artificial intelligence depends not on the technology but on its human user,” she said.
De Guzman emphasized the need for a culture of continuous learning and innovation to ensure professionals are prepared to confront cybersecurity threats.
Pamela Repotente, SAP practice leader at EY GDS Philippines, added that Gen Z workers bring digital fluency and adaptability to AI-driven environments.
“It is about supporting their future needs and career expectations and helping them solve the most complex stakeholder and societal issues,” she said.
The company said such training initiatives are part of a broader effort to strengthen the Philippine IT-business process management (IT-BPM) and professional services industry, as demand for digital solutions and cybersecurity expertise continues to grow.

One of the standout items is a metallic gazar dress accented with crystal beadwork and lace, a gingham skirt embroidered with ladybugs, and a customizable poncho designed for versatility. The brand also offers personalized market bags, accessories, and a blind bag featuring a crocheted charm.

Broniola, a Fashion Design and Merchandising alumna, said the brand was born from her interest in objects believed to bring prosperity and the desire to create clothing with meaning.
“Sometimes, luck is in the tiniest of things—like finding a 50-peso bill or seeing a friendly cat,” she said.
She is part of the 2025 cohort of the Benilde Hub of Innovation for Inclusion (HiFi) Crowdfunding Accelerator, a threemonth program that provides mentorship and funding support for creative ventures. Through the initiative, Broniola hopes to engage audiences that support slow fashion and local craftsmanship.

She plans to expand by collaborating with artisan communities and selling through pop-up shops across Metro Manila. The designer also aims to shift to sustainable production systems in the future.
Broniola said she hopes to balance storytelling with practicality in her work. “The goal is not just to make something pretty, but to make pieces with purpose,” she said.
The Lucky Strike collection is currently featured on crowdfunding platform The Spark Project. with
To address concerns over device longevity, Samsung said its Galaxy line now receives up to seven generations of operating system updates and security patches. The tech company also offers Samsung Care+, a protection service covering accidental and liquid damage with unlimited repairs and one device replacement per year for up to two years. Samsung Care+ can be availed upon device purchase or within 30 days afterward, either instore or through samsung.com. Coverage extends nationwide through Samsung’s authorized service centers. The move comes as younger Filipinos increasingly seek added value in tech purchases, with convenience and reliability playing key roles in their decision-making.

to promote mindful living, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation. By blending modern eco-architecture with traditional Filipino design, Lopez has created a sanctuary that inspires visitors to embrace a greener lifestyle.
Diwa, which means “spirit” or “essence” in Filipino, embodies the core philosophy of the project—reconnecting with nature while fostering sustainability.
Siargao has long been a magnet for travelers seeking adventure, but Lopez’s project adds a new dimension to the island’s appeal: responsible tourism.
“Diwa began as a personal desire to slow down and reconnect with nature. After eight years in the corporate world, I felt the need for a change. What started as an escape became a mission to build a space rooted in simplicity, sustainability, and community. In 2019, after transformative trips to Siargao with my best friend and now business partner, Chrissie Torres-Jamlang, we took the leap,” shared Lopez. Back in the city, weekend surf trips were her escape—moments by the sea that brought joy and peace. That love for the ocean led her to build a nature-rooted business. Now based in Siargao, she remains inspired by its beauty and

Sustainability is central to Diwa’s way of living and hosting. They’ve eliminated single-use plastics, compost organic waste, use solar lighting, and source local products—from handcrafted toiletries to seasonal breakfast ingredients— supporting both the environment and community.
Building Diwa wasn’t easy. Remote island life brought supply issues and power outages, while the pandemic and typhoon pushed them further. But those setbacks brought clarity. “They made us ask what kind of space we really wanted to build,” said Lopez. “Stripped to the essentials, we rebuilt with intention.”
At Diwa, sustainability is both a practice and a promise. From solarkissed mornings to compost-fed gardens, every detail reflects a deeper
